Caledonian Brewery

At its height, in the 19th century, Edinburgh's brewing industry comprised of some 40 or so breweries. The smell of Edinburgh's proliferating breweries helped make its nickname "Aulde Reekie" stick. While, today, small brewing operations can be found in and around Edinburgh, the Caledonian Brewery, aka "the Caley", is the last remaining of the original Victorian breweries in operation. The Brew House, set in a red brick building in Edinburgh's Slateford area, remains relatively unchanged since 1869. Its best-known beers are Caledonian 80 and Deuchars IPA, award-winning ales that you can find in many Edinburgh pubs .

In 2010, as part of the Edinburgh Fringe , the Caley hosted comedy competition Take the Mic (16-22 Aug, 7pm) in its heritage centre.

Do you like beer? Do you like Ales? Do you like heritage? Then you are at the right place at the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh/ Dalry, off Slateford Road! Today I joined a 1.5h tour of the brewery premises to get some knowledge of Beer/Ale brewing with an aftermath of tasting certain brands like Deuchars, Flying Scotsman, 80 Shillings and Over the Bar, my favourite being the FLYING SCOTSMAN. I am not normally an ale drinker, but this time I made an exception. In addition we got some nice pies served with the beer what was the perfect ending to a nice day! Check out their website! You can book your own tours (especially popular with stag/hen nights) which range from £12 to £30 dependent if you like food with your tour and beer/ale tasting. The brewery is old and traditional, still showing some of their original features. It's very clean and presentable, not like other places. Last but not least, the staff is very engaged and present the spirit of this place very well. Enjoy!

The Caledonian Brewery has been producing fine ales since the second half of the nineteenth century and still is one of the most thriving businesses in the city. The brewery is unusual in a way as it focuses on brewing cask conditioned ale, which was normally brewed in England. The stable ales that the brewery produces are Deuchers IPA and Caledonian 80 (a more typical Scottish like ale). However, throughout the years the brewery has produced a variety of different ales for special occasions. Ales such as Over the Bar, Highland Fling, Auld Acquaintance and Old Seadog are just some the ales which reinforced by enjoyment of Caledonian Brewery. I started purely on Deuchers IPA and from then on, I began my journey through the many quality ales that this brewery produces. If you want to taste the best of Scottish brewing, then why not taste a tipple from the Caledonian Brewery!

how does one het such a wonderful tour?

We just called ahead and asked for an appointment. It helped that I had some beer-writing credentials, but I think they'd have been happy to oblige anyway.

I really like this site, it's so important to know more about this topic, keep it up and of course every time I have time I'll love to check out again

Karen and Kate

Hello Karen and Kate -

Thanks for your interest!

Unfortunately, after contacting the Events Coordinator at the brewery for advice, I was notified that they have just recently cancelled the public tour for health and safety reasons.

So back to the drawing board for me - but if I find anything else similar I will let you know.

A historical beverage

Would you believe it if I told you that beer is the third most consumed drink in the world? Right up there after water and tea, before both coffee and wine. Beer goes way back and was probably the first alcoholic drink ever to be intentionally produced. The oldest chemical proofs of beer making are almost 6000 years old and were found in the Zargos Mountain of western Iran. Many believe that beer as a beverage is way older than that, up to even 10 000 years old.

In the early days of beer's history, historians believe that the golden beverage served as much moe than just a joyful refreshment. It seems as though beer was used as an important instrument, serving as labour payment as well as nutrition. For example; when the great pyramids were build in Ancient Egypt, some 3800 years ago, beer was given to the workers as payment as well as both nutrition and refreshment. Each labourer earned 4-5 litres of beer per day. Who knows, if it wasn't for beer, perhaps one of the seven great wonders of the world would never have come about.

Beer brewing trend

Most people enjoy a refreshing beer every now and then, but some take their relationship with this golden drink a few steps further. There is a strong trend in recent years in brewing your own beer. Some of these passionate beer lovers travel the world to indulge their senses and explore different types of beer in different parts of the world. Then they gather knowledge, invest in some basic equipment and set out experimenting with the brewing process. Brewing beer is not particularly difficult, but the possibilities to experiment with different flavours, temperatures and other brewing factors to get beer of different alcohol levels, shades and intensity, are many.

Beer, pubs and slot machines: what's the connection? For a lot of British people, beer has got an important social element. It is a drink to be enjoyed with friends, especially at traditional pubs, perhaps while trying your luck with a slot machine. If your local pub has done away with slot machines, don't despair. Play slots online while you drink your beer, and keep track of your gaming with tools like slottracker!
