Long Island Medium Theresa Caputo smiles for the camera.

You don’t need to be a psychic to know that Theresa Caputo puts on a one-of-a-kind live show.

Caputo, aka the Long Island Medium , tours all over the U.S. and connects with audiences by speaking to their deceased relatives, lovers and friends on their behalf.

How does she do it?

Well, as Caputo said on Windy City Live , she “just starts to sense and feel things.”

And if you want to know if Caputo can sense things about people from your past who have passed on, truly the only way to find out is live .

For those that want to see her speak to the dead in person, you better hurry too.

Caputo has two shows in the Tri-State area very soon — first, she’ll be at Montclair’s Wellmont Theatre on Friday, Feb. 10 and the following night, Caputo’s set to become a walking ouija board near the boardwalk at Atlantic City’s Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino Resort on Feb. 11.

Last-minute tickets for the show are $67 before fees and $74 before fees on Vivid Seats at the time of publication.

But can you really put a price on speaking to your loved ones from beyond the grave? We think not.

All prices listed are subject to fluctuation.

Theresa Caputo 2023 tour schedule

After Caputo’s back-to-back Garden State gigs, she will travel all over the U.S. this year.

Just a few of the biggest cities she’s set to take her unique talents to include Saint Petersburg (April 12), Atlanta (April 28), Hunstville, AL (May 7), Houston (May 19) and Dallas (May 24).

The tour concludes at Bethlehem, PA’s Wind Creek Event Center on Aug. 19.

A complete calendar including all 25 tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

How to watch “Long Island Medium”

Caputo’s TLC show that put her on the map ran from 2011-19.

Over the course of 176 episodes, she spoke with skeptics and believers in private and group sessions.

At the show’s peak during its third season in 2012, “Long Island Medium” regularly drew over three million viewers per episode.

If you want to catch up on Caputo before seeing her live, you can find past episodes on  TLC GO, The Roku Channel and discovery+.

Theresa Caputo podcast

Now that her show has come to an end, Caputo has moved to another, um, medium.

These days, when she’s not performing for audiences all over the world, she hosts the podcast “Hey Spirit.”

In each show, the 54-year-old “provides virtual readings to people from around the world, (giving them) closure as they commune with their departed loved ones.”

Review: Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience

Theresa Caputo Live Banner

Share this:

Some events leave a lasting impact on you. I don’t know about everyone else, but seeing Hamilton for the first time was one of these life-changing events. I felt my world shift profusely, due to the overall experience of witnessing something out of this world. It feels like there’s a clear distinction between two periods of your life; whatever colorless world you lived in before, and the bright and vibrant one you discover when you leave the show. Seeing Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience was just as life-changing and awe-inspiring, but in a different way for a different reason.

I watched Theresa Caputo for years on her TLC series Long Island Medium , however, it wasn’t consistent. Then last year, on a staycation, I marathoned the entire series and became obsessed with the life and work of Caputo . So when I saw a Facebook ad for an upcoming live show in Detroit, my mother and I jumped at the opportunity to see Theresa Caputo in person for ourselves.

Neither of us knew what to expect, although we did attend a show with psychic Sylvia Browne , so we were excited and nervous about what could happen when we arrived at The Masonic Temple. What we got was a night that enlightened not just us, but everyone else that gathered together for messages from our loved ones. Continue on to see if the Theresa Caputo live experience is for you.

[Note: While I am reviewing the Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience , I won’t be discussing the stories or messages given to people by the medium herself (as that felt too personal in some cases). Instead I’ll talk about the experience as a whole, and what you can expect from that.]

Theresa Caputo and her gift

As stated above, Theresa Caputo is most known for her television show, Long Island Medium , which aired for 14 seasons on TLC. In the reality series, cameras follow Caputo as she tries to balance her everyday life with her family and her job as a medium. As a medium, Caputo communicates with the deceased, a gift she uses in a career that began later in life. Through her gift, she’s able to bring about emotional healing for those still present on this side, which is the crux of her career.

While being a medium would be interesting enough to watch, Theresa Caputo also has a sassy attitude paired with her accent, which is endearing and enjoyable to watch. People notice her the moment she walks in the room, with large hair, stellar nails, and a voice/laugh that is easily recognizable and can be heard from across the room. Regardless of whether you believe in her gift or not, it’s hard to deny that Caputo has a larger-than-life personality and can command a room through her silliness and massive heart.

Long Island Medium came to an abrupt end back in 2019 without much reason. Some believed it to be because of the personal issues she was going through, as she and her husband separated and eventually divorced, while others thought the cancellation came about because of the global pandemic, which began a few months after the final episode rolled.

However, between the current tour and the recently announced sequel series at Lifetime, Theresa Caputo proves that she’s not one to slow down or allow naysayers to stop her from what she believes is a mission from God. This leads us to the main event, the reason I and hundreds of others were gathered in an old cathedral, to see Theresa Caputo’s gift for ourselves.

Long Island Medium

The Long Island Medium in action

The experience began about 7:30 p.m. after the doors opened about an hour prior. Everyone gathered in their seats, with me and my mother seated in the fourth row from the front. Before Theresa Caputo made her way on stage, which was set up with a small table covered in lit candles and a few crystals, she had the National Anthem played while a picture of a mystically billowing flag played on the large screen located behind the setup. She asked everyone to stand and show their respect, and after the show of patriotism, Caputo finally made her way onto the stage and the festivities began.

Before she descended the stairs and began the readings, the Long Island Medium stood on stage, describing her process, and explaining what audience members could expect from the experience. She indicated that her gift comes in the form of images and symbols that she uses to communicate messages to those present. She stated that it’s possible that while a message might be meant for one specific person, the healing can be meant for others present who need to hear something similar. The process she described is not far from the healing aspects of group therapy, something I could easily understand and support. She also apologized that she couldn’t read every one of us present, as that would take too long and expel a lot of energy to do so.

Once the reading began, it was understandable as to why she made the above statement. Theresa Caputo’s approach to her messages wasn’t to fly through the group and shoot off willy-nilly messages. Instead, she spent a significant amount of time with each group that she stopped and spoke with. Sometimes, it was no more than five or ten minutes, but for many people, it was closer to twenty minutes. Whatever time she dedicated to each message was dictated by whom she was talking to and what their loved ones on the other side determined they needed to hear.

You could tell that some more skeptical people took a bit more time to be convinced than others who bought into Caputo’s talent before attending. However, the moment that it clicked for these individuals was awe-inspiring, watching realization dawn on their faces, usually with some form of emotions.

I’m not here to convince you one way or another if what Theresa Caputo does is real, I believe that it is. Having grown up in a family that was open to experiences such as Tarot Cards and psychics, this was exactly in my wheelhouse. But let me tell you, whether you believe it or not, being there and seeing what she did and the information she could tell you about these people and their loved ones was impressive. Caputo would pull something that seemed completely off the walls out of thin air, and it would mean something to those present or relate to the deceased person almost perfectly. Pieces of information that would be near impossible to find about someone you knew, let alone strangers in a crowd.

And yet, she did it over and over. She would walk around the room, through the rows of seats, providing as many messages as she could to those present for the two-and-a-half-hour show. She’d walk, stop, turn, and begin talking, sharing information about something, relating it to the person. Each time she provided information to prove who the person was and then would provide whatever message they needed to pass along. When she was done, she’d move along.

The experience was incredibly emotional, with me and my mother, along with everyone else, crying together for people who are still grieving, no matter how long it’s been since their loved ones had passed. Your heart breaks with them, but throughout the show, we all gained a bit of healing. The highlight of the entire experience though was when Theresa Caputo came over to stand by me not once, but twice, to deliver a message to someone else. Both times she conversed with me, for a bit of light banter, adding some humor to her show. It was fantastic and added to the realism of this larger-than-life individual.

Final thoughts on Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience

Again, I recognize that not everyone believes in spirits or mediums. The idea can be a hard sell for many people because the concept means having to believe in something that isn’t real or tangible. I will say this though, it’s hard to be a skeptic after leaving an experience like that.

Theresa Caputo does something special in her show, bringing about healing for people who desperately need it, and she does it with style. She’s not what you’d traditionally think of when someone says “I’m going to see a medium” and that makes the experience even more enjoyable. She’s full of life, breathing life back into people who are lost after losing someone close to them.

If you were ever considering going to this show, I implore you to check it out. You may not get a direct message from someone who passed, but you will have an experience that will leave a lasting mark on you.

Theresa Caputo is currently on tour with her live show . Let us know on social media @mycosmiccircus or in The Cosmic Circus Discord if you plan on attending.

Beyond the Readings: We Get the Belt Now!

Beyond just accumulating frequent flier miles, Theresa’s journey has been one of personal growth and transformation. She offers viewers a rare glimpse behind-the-scenes from her travels, including never-before-shared readings in Texas, London, and Chicago. And learns how one client’s mystery sign from spirit became crystal clear after speaking to his family.

Beyond the Readings: Spirits & Surprises

Go behind-the-scenes of Theresa Caputo: Raising Spirits as Theresa invites viewers to peek behind the curtain of her gift, being on tour, as well as surprising clients and never-before-seen readings. A mother and daughter duo follow-up with Theresa about their experience on Raising Spirits where they were reconnected with their dad and husband who passed 20 years ago.

Memory Lane

When Theresa’s mom uncovers a pile of Theresa’s childhood memorabilia, it inspires Theresa to do the same in her attic–a room she’s too scared to enter. She brings forth the dad of a friend who helps her, even though he has shut down Theresa’s gift in the past. Michelina runs wild in dance class until Theresa starts channeling for the mom of another student. A mother gets closure and precious messages from her son, who was murdered. While visiting her son-in-law’s restaurant, Spirit sidetracks her reading in the parking lot before she can even get inside.

This One Hits Home

When a horrible tragedy befalls someone close to her, Theresa continues to deliver messages while experiencing her own grief. Things get intense when the victim of that tragedy makes himself known to Theresa in the week after he passes. Meanwhile, a woman is given closure following the shocking death of her husband from a snowmobile accident.

Give Me a Sign

An unassuming night out with her girlfriends yields one of the most emotional and surprising readings of the season, as Theresa delivers messages to a skeptical woman grieving the shocking loss of her pregnant daughter. Additionally, Theresa helps a woman surprise her shocked husband with a reading that brings forth the soul of his father.

Mother's Love, Daughter's Wish

Big news brings an emotional time to Theresa’s family. While visiting her doctor to help manage her menopause, Theresa brings forth her doctor’s gushing mom. Theresa gives a reading to two sisters mourning the loss of their mom, and helps ease the guilt of one sister who wasn’t present for her mom’s passing. At a group reading, another mom pleads from the beyond for her daughter to renew her faith. A barista has a wild day at work when Theresa reunites her with the soul of her grandfather.

Kids Stay in the Picture

When Theresa headlines a fundraiser to fill the Wish Room at a local center for sick children, lives are changed forever. After channeling a young girl for her grieving mom, Theresa calls the woman’s stunned family when she finds out that they may not believe in what she does. In a true goosebump moment, Theresa reunites the head of the charity with his mom, and then spots her spirit in family photos taken after she died.

Windy Spirit

Back on the road, Theresa spends a few days in Chicago in between tour stops. Before braving a ride at the top of one of the city’s tallest buildings, Theresa brings comfort to a woman who lost her mom after a brief illness. During a moving group reading, Theresa reunites a woman with her sister who she lost to a tragedy. And in one of the most emotional readings of the season, Theresa channels a son who passed away in his mother’s arms. Back at home, Theresa wonders if dinner with her son will yield some exciting news.

Pickleball Promise

A busy Theresa is desperate to plan a girls’ night with her besties. While at lunch, Spirit pulls Theresa into a reading that finds a departed mom asking her daughter’s boyfriend for a proposal! And Theresa makes good on her promise to play pickleball with her family, who are so competitive they practically forget she is there.

A Surprise Among Friends

While visiting family at the beach, Theresa surprises a longtime friend with a reading, and reunites him with his deceased parents. Afterwards, Theresa reads a former Long Islander whose departed dad didn’t know the secrets his son was keeping from him and reconnects a winery worker with her long-lost son. In the end, Theresa returns home to find Victoria has yet to move out, and with the help of her dad Nick, resorts to drastic measures.

Bus to the Beach

The Caputos are briefly all under the same roof for the first time in weeks. Theresa visits her cousins in Rehoboth Beach for an impromptu vacation in between tour stops. A mom and daughter meet with Theresa to reunite with their husband/dad who died suddenly under the most tragic of circumstances at work. After getting beat at bumper cars, Theresa is followed by a curious stranger who’s being haunted by her brother’s spirit.

High Hair, High Tea

While in London, Theresa visits a hatmaker to dress for high tea, and is surprised when the hatmaker turns down a reading. At tea, Theresa conducts an emotional group reading, even channeling the loved one of a stunned British crew member. A young woman heals before our eyes as she finds closure and forgives herself after reuniting with her stepfather from beyond. After arriving back on Long Island, a tea party with Theresa’s granddaughter, Michelina, goes haywire.

Hello, London!

Theresa is a nervous wreck trying to figure out what to pack for her very first visit to the UK. Before departing she sages Victoria’s house and brings a pre-housewarming gift to encourage her to move out while she’s gone. After her first tour performances there, she pulls off a jaw-dropping surprise on a double decker bus! A couple is blown away by the specific details that Theresa channels about their son. While at a cake shop, Theresa can’t shake the feeling of a mysterious presence.

A Very Caputo Wedding

Say ciao with Theresa and the Caputos as the big day finally arrives! Theresa and her family travel to Lake Como, Italy for the long-awaited wedding between Larry Jr and Leah. Spirit can’t help but be part of the prep, as Theresa channels while shopping for her granddaughter’s outfit for the wedding. While getting fitted for her own dress, Theresa spots a sewing machine identical to her grandmother’s, which spurns a touching reading for the tailor. In a group reading, a woman who feels she never gets signs from her mother seeks Theresa’s help.

Theresa's Holy House

An emotional Theresa finds out her father-in-law has passed and then feels his presence in the following days while shopping for Holy Water. Meanwhile, in a raucous group reading on Long Island, a son’s path is endorsed by his late mother, a woman is reunited with her husband whose photo she keeps in her bra, and one woman becomes a believer when Theresa hits every message with a resounding validation.

Dancing with Spirit

Always game to try new things, Theresa and Kiana attend a line-dancing class in Dallas. While there, Theresa conducts an impromptu group reading that leaves several cowboys in tears. Later on Long Island, Theresa’s quick trip to a facialist turns into another monumental moment, as a woman is connected with her father after his death from a long and harrowing illness. A friendly game of pickleball between Theresa and her dad somehow ignites family chaos back at the house.

Mother Knows Best

Whether she is traveling or back at home in Long Island, Theresa is never off the clock! While she is channeling spirits, Theresa is also challenging herself by facing her fear of heights and encouraging her daughter to move into her brand new house. Meanwhile on the road, Theresa connects an unexpecting tourist with an important message from her deceased parents, gives Kianna some heartfelt closure and surprises a loving mom with an incredible gift for Mother’s Day.

Theresa's Back

Psychic medium Theresa Caputo is back and going global with her incredible gift of communicating with the dead. She still lives in Long Island, but her world looks a lot different now. She’s single, a grandma and would be an empty nester if her daughter Victoria and her family weren’t too comfortable to leave. With a tour coming up, Theresa decides to do a reading in town before heading off and ends up getting a surprise from her clients that she’ll never forget.

Event Details

Theresa Caputo: I’m the Long Island Medium (maybe you’ve heard of my reality show?), a New York Times best-selling author, and an incredibly busy mom, and all-around family gal. I was born and raised on Long Island in Hicksville, NY and have two children, Larry and Victoria. I’m close to my parents who are still very much alive. I also have a brother named Michael and a feisty Yorkie Louie, and two French bulldogs Bubba and Bentley (yup we have them now!).

I’ve been seeing, feeling, and sensing Spirit since I was four years old, but it wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I learned to communicate with souls in Heaven. After suffering from debilitating anxiety and trying to manage it on my own and with a therapist for years, my mom introduced me to a spiritual healer and teacher named Pat Longo. After just one session, she told me that I was suppressing Spirit’s energy, which caused a lot of my anxiety, and helped me learn to channel Spirit through my chakras and release it with my words. I began to heal and come into my own.

When I accepted my gift, I decided to use it to deliver healing messages that would help people learn, grow, and embrace life. I’ve been a practicing medium for over ten years now and tour the country with my live show “Theresa Caputo Live The Experience.” I’ve also written three books: There’s More to Life than This: Healing Messages, Remarkable Stories, and Insight from the Other Side (Atria Books, 2013), which debuted at #2 on the New York Times best seller list, “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” Life Changing Lessons from Heaven (Atria Books, 2014) I’m very excited for you all to read my new book NY Times bestseller “Good Grief” Heal Your Soul, Honor Your Loved Ones, and Learn to Live again (Atria Books 2017). Considering I started this work with just a business card and word of mouth, I pinch myself when I think about what a crazy ride it’s been for a typical Long Island mom!

Clients, fans, and the media always ask me to describe how I receive information, and it’s hard to put into words because I see, hear, and feel things differently than we do in the physical world. Sprit mostly speaks to me through a sixth sense—a kind of feeling and knowing. When I get information, it feels like very strong intuition, or recall. Spirit also uses a vocabulary of signs and symbols that they show me during a reading; over time, I assigned words, phrases, and meanings to certain images I was shown, and then through trial and error, Spirit helped me add new ones until we created an entire vocabulary for us to work with. I translate my signs and what I feel as best I can, and then deliver the messages, but it’s the client’s job to interpret how the meaning is significant. It’s like piecing together a puzzle, and can sometimes sound like guesswork, but Spirit speaks “another language,” at another speed, and in another dimension. My job’s not easy lol!

I’m grateful for an ability that’s brought countless people comfort and joy, helped many believe in an afterlife, led others to trust that their loved ones are safe and at peace, and shown them that those souls are guiding, encouraging, and loving them from the Other Side. My wish for everyone I meet is that Spirit gives them a message that brings them the most peace at that moment.

If you’re interested in a reading, please know that I was booked for two years before the show first aired, and in addition to that I had a very extended waiting list. The people that have emailed, written in or filled out the online form have been added to that list. Unfortunately being on this list does not guarantee an appointment. The people featured on Long Island Medium are selected from all of the lists. Factors include location, availability, and who feels comfortable being on television is taken into consideration. Because it’s just impossible to schedule so far out. I am so incredibly honored and grateful for all of your love and support! I am truly blessed by all of you! Thank you for all your patience and understanding.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
