Battle of the credit card travel portals: Which is the best for booking flights?

Stella Shon

American Express, Capital One, Chase and Citi are four of the major players in the travel credit card space . As such, these issuers offer their own travel portals, where users can earn and redeem their points and miles for flights, hotels, car rentals and more.

These issuers also incentivize their cardholders to use the bank's own portal, done by offering bonus points on bookings.

For instance, with the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , you'll earn 10 miles per dollar on hotel and car rentals and 5 miles per dollar on flights — but only when booked through the Capital One Travel portal. Purchases made outside the portal earn 2 miles per dollar.

Likewise, with the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , you'll earn 5 points per dollar on all travel booked through the Ultimate Rewards portal. Otherwise, you earn 2 points per dollar on those travel purchases.

Given the lucrative earning potential that booking through these portals presents, it begs the question: Is it worth your time to use them rather than booking directly?

In this guide, we put these four travel portals to the test when booking flights. We compared price, ease of use, redemption value and other metrics.

Methodology

For this analysis, we limited our research to flights and didn't include hotels, rental cars or other travel. That's because we generally recommend that you avoid booking hotels through a third party since you likely won't receive elite-status benefits (if you have any) or earn elite-qualifying stay credits.

If you're not concerned with earning hotel elite status or are booking an independent hotel, then booking your stay through a travel portal could be advantageous for you.

It's also worth noting that you can get elite-like perks at hotels, even without elite status, by booking with these programs: Amex's Fine Hotels + Resorts , Amex's The Hotel Collection , Capital One's Premier Collection , Capital One's Lifestyle Collection , Chase's Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection , Citi's Hotel Collection and Citi's Luxury Hotel Collection.

With flights, you may be able to "double-dip" your earnings: You can usually earn bonus points on bookings through your card issuer's portal and earn airline and elite-qualifying miles just as you would by booking directly through the airline. That said, here are the features we examined in each portal:

  • Results: Do you get comprehensive results when searching through the portal?
  • Price: How do the prices compare to booking directly with an airline versus through a portal?
  • Ease of use: Is navigating the portal easy for a user? What unique features or benefits do users get from using this portal?
  • Redemption value: Is it worth redeeming your points and miles for travel through a portal?

With these four factors in mind, here's how the individual issuers' travel portals stack up.

American Express Travel portal

capital one voyager

Any American Express card that earns Membership Rewards points grants access to the Amex Travel portal . Depending on your specific card, you may earn bonus points for booking through the portal.

The Platinum Card® from American Express , for instance, earns 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel (on up to $500,000 of these purchases annually, then 1 point per dollar) and 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotel bookings made through Amex Travel. The American Express® Gold Card , meanwhile, earns 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel.

You can search for flights, hotels, flight and hotel packages, rental cars and cruises on the Amex portal.

Capital One travel portal

capital one voyager

The Capital One travel portal offers a fresh interface powered by the travel tech app Hopper and is accessible with most credit cards earning Capital One miles or cash back.

Bonus earnings are available, depending on which card you have. Using the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card to book flights in the portal provides 5 miles per dollar; flights booked elsewhere earn 2 miles per dollar.

Currently, you can only book flights, hotels and rental cars through the portal. The portal also houses the Premier Collection for luxury hotels. However, this is only accessible if you have the Venture X or its counterpart, the Capital One Venture X Business .

Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal

Chase's Ultimate Rewards travel portal was powered by Expedia for many years, but the issuer migrated to cxLoyalty in 2021 .

You can access the portal with your Ultimate Rewards-earning credit card , including popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve , the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Chase Freedom Unlimited . Cardholders can book flights, hotels, cars, activities and cruises on the Chase travel portal.

Citi travel portal

capital one voyager

The overhauled Citi travel portal launched in March 2023 after months of delays. It's powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda , part of the Booking.com family.

You can access the portal with any credit card earning ThankYou points , and several cards earn bonus points on bookings in the portal. Unfortunately, flights aren't included in these bonus offerings.

With Citi's new portal, you can book flights, hotels, rental cars and attractions of numerous types. The portal also offers two hotel programs: Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection.

Booking flights

I looked at a variety of round-trip routes with the same dates (roughly six months from now) and gathered the following prices:

All of the travel portals generally fared well when it came to searching economy flights versus booking directly. However, there were a few major caveats worth noting.

Southwest Airlines is not bookable on any of the portals, and tickets for low-cost airlines like Spirit Airlines and Frontier are typically more expensive on the Chase and Capital One travel portals than booking directly. Amex Travel didn't display any Spirit Airways or Frontier Airlines flights.

When it came to international flights, all of the bank portals struggled at times to match prices or give comparable results versus booking directly. For a deeper dive on some of these routes and flight prices, we did a broader comparison across 20 flights in this guide .

As a general word of advice, domestic flights should yield the same results and price, but it gets tricky when searching for international fares. Your best bet would be to compare the prices and only use a portal when the prices are identical.

Ease of use

The Amex portal is my favorite for a comprehensible search experience, fast load times for results and the simplicity of parsing through the various options.

capital one voyager

On the other hand, the Capital One portal offers one of the most visually appealing interfaces, with color-coded dates to indicate the lowest prices in a calendar view — plus price drop protection. However, the Capital One portal did not provide as many options as its competitors on some searches. It also yielded higher prices for international routes, but I'm hopeful that the issuer will continue to make improvements in the future.

capital one voyager

Based on millions of data points from Hopper, Capital One is supposed to let you know if this is the best time to book via its price watch prediction feature.

capital one voyager

To standardize the offerings across various airlines, Capital One also provides detailed insights into what flyers can expect from their chosen fare class. With the rise of "basic economy" fares, it's not always clear what amenities are included in your ticket and what you'll have to pay for as extras.

Capital One does an excellent job of explaining in-depth features such as seat pitch, aircraft type, and food and beverage options on board.

capital one voyager

Speaking of basic economy, it's worth noting Amex Travel rarely (if ever) displays these fares. If you're looking for basic economy, you should use another portal.

Citi's new portal does a good job of offering a broad range of results in economy and offering upgrades on the payment page. And being able to book flights plus other travel elements in one transaction is great. However, searching directly for business-class fares is tricky on this portal.

Finally, the Chase portal has seen vast improvements since fully migrating toward its cxLoyalty interface. Previously, when Chase was powered by Expedia, users complained about slow load times and much higher prices than those offered directly by the airlines. Some of those issues seem to have been resolved.

capital one voyager

While the Ultimate Rewards portal could use some work in cleaning up the interface, the overall user experience is much better than before. That said, it's also the portal with the highest frequency of price divergence from booking directly — sometimes higher and sometimes lower.

Redemption value

This is not a criterion we used for evaluating these bank travel portals for this particular article. The value of your points or miles can depend on which particular rewards card you carry. Still, it is worth remembering if you intend to use your credit card's travel portal to earn or redeem points and miles.

Your credit card points or miles are typically worth 1 cent each for flights in your respective travel portal. That's the case with Amex cards that earn Membership Rewards points and Capital One credit cards . Even with the Capital One's premium card (the Venture X), your points are only worth 1 cent each when redeemed for travel through the Capital One portal. The same applies to credit cards earning Citi ThankYou points .

On the other hand, Chase's credit cardholders are incentivized to use the Ultimate Rewards portal via a higher redemption value. With the Chase Sapphire Reserve , your points are worth 1.5 cents each toward travel bookings, while the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred Credit Card fetch 1.25 cents per point in value.

capital one voyager

While not as consistent of a program, American Express offers "Insider Fares," allowing cardholders to redeem their points for a better value than 1 cent apiece on select domestic and international itineraries. However, these can be quite specific.

capital one voyager

Select Amex business credit cardholders can also leverage the Pay with Points benefit to get a 25% to 50% points rebate when booking select airfare through Amex Travel — yet another incentive to book through the portal.

Due to all these card-specific circumstances, we didn't make redemption values a main criterion for judging these portals for booking flights. Rather, we focused on each portal's user interface and the availability of competitive fares — as those two factors will probably be the determinants as to whether travelers end up using them.

Bottom line

Credit card issuers have improved their travel portals over the years, but they're still far from perfect. While there isn't a clear winner for the best travel portal, each has unique features and incentives for its cardholders.

If you decide to book a flight through your issuer's travel portal, be sure to compare that price against booking directly with the airline to get the best deal possible. And don't forget that you may want to book directly anyway to avoid any headaches down the road. If you need to change or cancel your airfare, booking with a third party can complicate matters when plans change.

Crypto firm Voyager Digital ensures creditor compensation with secured funds

V oyager Digital and its creditors have taken a crucial step forward in a development that is massive for Voyager Digital . By negotiating various settlements, Voyager Digital has obtained $484.35 million altogether in efforts Voyager has been doing in their attempt for rehabilitation of the trade company as they have filed for bankruptcy. The secured amount including interest, as estimated, is around 25% of accepted claims coming from Voyager creditors and these distributions are expected to start in the near future.

Voyager Digital landmark recovery through settlement  and assets recovery

The progress firm has made in asset recovery from FTX, a default of 3AC, and through unveiling Directors and Officers (D&O) insurance have led to the momentous financial recovery. This is kind of a milestone on the way of the company of “compensation” of creditors for the reasons of bankruptcy and the creation of financial stability afterward.

The settlement as per the report incorporates the deliverance of the whole $445 million foreseen amount over to Voyager, in conjunction with a $5 million deposit being held originally in an escrow during the bankruptcy sale procedure.

The Agreement involving the two parties terminates and resolves all matters including the release of all claims against each other and the stoppage of the FTX bankruptcy adversary proceeding.

In addition to boosting creditors’ salaries pool, Voyager has settled the D&O Insurance which implies under the curator for the Wind-Down Debtor $14.35 will be paid as creditors benefit. Furthermore, it is reasonable to expect that formal settlements such as the one Voyager proposed are generally aimed at gaining leeway in pursuing claims against insurers with respect to actions of insiders, including those concerning Three Arrows Capital and use of pledged funds for additional insurance coverage.

Creditor repayment efforts with Three Arrows Capital claim and distribution strategy

On the other hand the settlements are not the only advancement made by Voyager Digital as it has reached a secured claim of around $677.47 million in the Three Arrows Capital bankruptcy proceeding.

Three Arrows Capital will distribute their capital to a pro rata share in the initial distribution amounting to $20.43M, being an additional contribution to the creditors that will be used for Voyager’s clients.

As Voyager has carried out its planned initial distribution phase its checks have been sent to almost 630,000 account owners without in-kind distribution participation as well as to $130 million creditors. Voyager, having 270,000 of created checks still uncashed, advices its creditors to deposit somewhere before the final deadline is marked and get a reissued check if they don’t want their assets unclaimed.

Securing creditors’ trust and enhancing security

Paul R. Hage, in his role of Plan Administrator, is making a point to ensure the creditors of Voyager can depend on this controlled and meticulous process of winding down their business endeavors.

In addition, the report raised the concern about the continuing investigation about the data breach which is, on the other hand, an evidence of the prioritization of security and avoidance of further money-wasting problems among the management.

Voyager reminds that all expiring distributions will be made in USD via check, and creditors are suggested making payments not through any personal account information transmission within any communication.

The structured settlement so comprehensively addresses how to settle the Company’s debt and the financial obligations incorporated in that structured settlement constitute the basis for resumption of normal operations and fulfillment of commitments to its creditors.

A steady flow of updates and reports showing the company’s activity and development during the process of liquidation will be made available to interested parties in the following weeks.

How the Expedia Rewards Voyager Card compares to other travel reward cards

Best cards to pair with the expedia rewards voyager.

Expedia® Rewards Voyager Card from Citi overview

Looking for a credit card that lets you earn big rewards every time you travel? Business travelers and frequent flyers will love earning an impressive 4X points on Expedia purchases when they add the Expedia® Rewards Voyager Card from Citi to their wallet. You’ll also get a generous 25,000-point introductory bonus (after $2,000 spend in first three months), in addition to a small roster of valuable travel perks.

Though the card offers a high rewards rate on Expedia purchases, its maximum rate is limited to Expedia-related bookings, so if you aren't an active Expedia user, it may not be worth applying for the card. But if you believe the card’s rewards, welcome bonus and perks are worth considering, then its worth seeing how it compares to other travel rewards cards.

There is a high annual fee and APR for this card, which could make carrying a balance challenging

Expedia enthusiasts can reap maximum rewards, but non-enthusiasts will be limited in their rewards potential.

This card does not offer an intro APR, which reduces its competitiveness against other travel rewards cards that do.

Why you might want the Expedia Rewards Voyager card

The Expedia Rewards Voyager card could be a great fit for those who primarily use Expedia to book their travel, as it has a great rewards rate toward Expedia purchases and offers a welcome bonus, a great annual anniversary bonus and Expedia Gold status — which can boost your rewards earnings on bookings.

Welcome offer: Affordable spending requirement

This Citi Expedia card offers 25,000 bonus points when you spend $2,000 within the first three months of opening your account. The Expedia Rewards site explains that 140 points are equal to $1 — making this bonus worth roughly $180. But even so, that calculation does not take into account discounts you get when you are an Expedia Rewards member. For instance, your points are worth double at thousands of VIP Access hotels.

In comparison to other travel rewards cards, there are plenty that offer more valuable welcome bonuses, such as the Citi Premier® Card — which currently offers a bonus worth at least $600 toward redemption through Citi’s ThankYou portal and a maximum possible value of $1,140 through the right transfer partner (Based on Bankrate’s point valuations ). However, it has a much high spending requirement, so if you want a card with a lesser spending requirement, the Expedia Rewards Voyager may be a better option.

Rewards: High rate for Expedia.com or Expedia mobile app bookings

Earning rewards is easy with the Expedia Rewards Voyager card, as you’ll be rewarded for being an Expedia loyalist. You’ll earn 4X Expedia Rewards points every time you make a purchase through Expedia.com or the Expedia mobile app. That includes flights, hotels, rental cars and travel packages.

Expedia Rewards Voyager also gives you 2X points for restaurants and entertainment purchases, including tickets to sporting events, concerts and movies. As is the case with most reward cards, you’ll get 1X point for every other purchase you make.

Moreover, as an Expedia Rewards member, you earn an additional 2 points for every dollar you spend. As a complimentary Gold level member, you’ll earn 30 percent more points on top of that. And you’ll get double Expedia Rewards points when you book on the Expedia App .

Cardholder perks: Moderate range of travel benefits

The Expedia Rewards Voyager offers a number of benefits designed to help travelers navigate with ease.

  • Expedia Rewards Gold status. You automatically become an Expedia Rewards Gold member when you open your credit card account. Gold members earn 30 percent more points every time they book.
  • Annual air travel fee credit. You’ll get a up to $100 air travel fee statement credit each year you are a card member. This credit can be used toward airline incidentals (like baggage fees or in-flight purchases) on qualified airlines or toward either the Global Entry or the TSA Precheck application fee.
  • An anniversary bonus. Every year you own the card and spend at least $10,000 in the prior year, you’ll get a 5,000 point bonus.
  • Citi Concierge. Expedia Rewards Voyager Card members have access to Citi Concierge’s team of experts who can help you make travel, shopping and dining arrangements

While the list of perks are minimal, it may be perfect for infrequent travelers or those who are more focused on earning maximum rewards on their Expedia bookings.

Why you might want a different travel rewards card

Even though the Expedia Rewards Voyager card is fairly valuable for Expedia enthusiasts, there are a handful of downsides of the card you should consider, such as its rigid rewards redemption and how its annual fee don’t fully measure up to its small list of perks.

Redemption: Limited flexibility compared to other travel rewards cards

Expedia Rewards Voyager makes it easy for you to redeem points when you purchase travel items from Expedia.com. According to Expedia Rewards, 140 points are equal to a dollar off a booking, but your points are worth double that at thousands of Expedia VIP Access hotels. You can also use points to get a discount on car rental purchases and hotel rates, or you can redeem points to get a flight and purchase coupon worth $25 or more, but most of the card’s redemption options (and its maximum reward redemption value) limits you to Expedia purchases.

With a card such as the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card , not only would you have a much more flexible range of eligible redemption categories, such as car rentals, cruises, transit, tourist attractions, restaurants, cocktails bars and more, you’d have no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee, a higher flat rewards rate on all purchases, an intro APR offer on both purchases and balance transfers and a more valuable welcome bonus than the Expedia Rewards Voyager.

Rates and fees: You can find better travel rewards cards with similar fees

The standard APR for the Expedia Rewards Voyager card is 13.99 percent to 21.99 percent variable, depending on your creditworthiness. There is also an annual fee of $95. The cost of the annual fee and APR aren’t out of the ordinary for travel rewards cards, but you can definitely find similar cards that have annual fees within the same range that have better rewards rates, perks and redemption flexibility than the Expedia Rewards Voyager.

Fortunately, there is no foreign transaction fee , so you won’t be charged a percentage every time you make a purchase in a foreign country. Some travel rewards cards, despite its category, may have a 3 percent foreign transaction fee, so this is a nice advantage — however, you need to watch out for its cash advance fee, as it is either $10 or 5 percent of the cash amount, whichever is greater. You’ll also pay up to $40 for late transactions and returned payments.

The Expedia Rewards Voyager card has the best benefits when you book all your travel through Expedia.com. Two other travel reward cards, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , offer more flexible reward opportunities.

5x on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠. 3x on dining, select streaming services and online groceries. 2x on all other travel purchases. 1x on all other purchases.

Expedia Rewards Voyager vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® offers 5X points on Lyft (through March 2025), 5X points on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3X points on dining and 2X points on all other travel purchases. You also get 60,000 bonus points when you spend $4,000 in the first three months and have access to deals with the Chase Travel℠.

The annual fee is $95 for both cards, but the value of the Sapphire Preferred’s rewards points and welcome bonus, plus its range of rewards categories and cardholder perks are more expansive than the Expedia Rewards Voyager, as it limits your highest rewards points toward only Expedia related purchases — and the cardholder perks aren’t extremely competitive compared to the Sapphire Preferred and other top-tier travel rewards cards.

Expedia Rewards Voyager vs. Capital One Venture Rewards

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has the most flexibility of all, giving you 5X miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2X miles on every purchase you make. Plus you’ll enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

Like the Sapphire Preferred, the annual fee is $95 for both the Capital One Venture ( See Rates & Fees ) and Expedia Rewards Voyager, but the biggest contrast between the two is the range of travel benefits the former offers compared to the latter, as well as the worth of each card’s welcome bonuses. The Capital One Venture offers auto rental insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, $100 credit toward TSA PreCheck and Global Entry as well as access to luxury hotel experiences, while the Expedia Voyager offers $100 annual airline fee credit, no foreign transaction fees, annual anniversary bonuses (note: only if you meet the requirements) and Citi Concierge. Both cards offer decent travel perks, but it depends on which you’d rather have in the long run.

Plus, the Expedia Rewards Voyager’s welcome bonus is only worth around $180, while the Capital One Venture’s is worth around $750 — a stark difference in cash value. If the welcome bonus is important, then the Capital One Venture might be the obvious choice.

Since the Expedia Rewards Voyager card offers better benefits for hotel and rental car purchases, intrepid travelers may want to pair this card with another travel card that lets you rack up miles toward airline travel.

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card By combining these two cards, you can maximize your earning potential on both travel and everyday purchases. The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card allows you to earn 5X miles on hotels and rental cars when you book through Capital One Travel and unlimited 1.25X miles per dollar on every purchase, while the Expedia Rewards Voyager Card offers accelerated rewards on Expedia purchases. Plus, both cards have a very attainable welcome bonus that can contribute to your overall rewards earning potential.

The Capital One VentureOne also offers an intro APR period for both purchases and balance transfers, whereas the Expedia Rewards Voyager does not, so since you avoid accruing interest on the former card for a while, it could lower the amount of interest you would have to pay on your combined balances substantially (for a limited timeframe).

The Chase Freedom Unlimited®

Another viable option is to pair Expedia Rewards Voyager with a cash back card that earns cash back on all purchases, like the Chase Freedom Unlimited® . With this card, you earn 5 percent cash back on Lyft (valid through March 2025) and travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 3 percent cash back on dining and drugstore purchases and 1.5 percent cash back on every purchase, allowing you to accumulate rewards quickly if used toward everyday expenses.

Both cards also come with their own set of travel benefits that complement each other nicely. The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card offers trip cancellation and interruption insurance, and on the other hand, the Expedia Rewards Voyager Card provides benefits like a $100 annual airline fee credit, no foreign transaction fees and complimentary Expedia Gold status, which allows you to earn more rewards toward Expedia.com bookings.

Is the Expedia Rewards Voyager right for you?

The Expedia Rewards Voyager may be the best option for you, or it might be contrary to that. If you travel often, the benefits on this card may appeal to you; but, if you travel sparingly, the card may not be suited to you.

Frequent airline travelers

If you travel through various airlines often, the Expedia Voyager card could be a great choice, as cardholders receive a $100 annual airline fee credit. This benefit alone can be used towards enhancing one's travel experience, whether it be toward TSA PreCheck or to help offset some of the additional costs associated with air travel, such as incidental charges (ex. baggage fees or in-flight purchases).

Another noteworthy advantage is the complimentary Expedia Gold status that comes with the card. With Gold status, you'll enjoy 30 percent more points when booking through Expedia.com, which can go toward flights. This elevated status can greatly enhance your overall travel experience and make booking your trips with the Expedia Voyager more worth it.

Entertainment seekers

The Expedia Rewards Voyager card offers impressive rewards and benefits specifically tailored to suit the needs and preferences of entertainment enthusiasts. Cardholders earn Expedia Rewards points on every purchase, allowing them to save on future travel expenses, including flights, hotel stays, and vacation packages. These points can be redeemed for a wide range of entertainment-related activities, such as concert tickets, theater shows, sporting events and more.

Bankrate’s Take — Is the Expedia Rewards Voyager Card worth it?

If you don’t travel a lot, and especially if you don’t book hotels when you travel, there are better travel reward cards out there. You have limited ways to earn points outside Expedia.com, and there are limited ways to redeem the points on the Expedia site as well.

But if you are a frequent traveler who loves to find a bargain, the Expedia Rewards Voyager offers the ability to earn points that give you discounts on future hotel, car rental and travel itineraries. Or you can let your points accumulate until you have banked enough to purchase an entire flight from Expedia.com.

After Months of Gibberish, Voyager 1 Is Communicating Well Again

NASA scientists spent months coaxing the 46-year-old Voyager 1 spacecraft back into healthy communication

By Meghan Bartels

NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft is depicted in this artist’s concept traveling through interstellar space, or the space between stars, which it entered in 2012.

NASA/JPL-Caltech

After months of nonsensical transmissions from humanity’s most distant emissary, NASA’s iconic Voyager 1 spacecraft is finally communicating intelligibly with Earth again.

Voyager 1 launched in 1977 , zipped past Jupiter and Saturn within just a few years and has been trekking farther from our sun ever since; the craft crossed into interstellar space in 2012. But in mid-November 2023 Voyager 1’s data transmissions became garbled , sending NASA engineers on a slow quest to troubleshoot the distant spacecraft. Finally, that work has paid off, and NASA has clear information on the probe’s health and status, the agency announced on April 22.

“It’s the most serious issue we’ve had since I’ve been the project manager, and it’s scary because you lose communication with the spacecraft,” said Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in an interview with Scientific American when the team was still tracking down the issue.

The Voyager 1 spacecraft is a scientific legend : It discovered that Jupiter’s moon Io, far from being a dead world like our own companion, is instead a supervolcanic world . The craft’s data suggested that Saturn’s moon Titan might have liquid on its surface. And for more than a decade, Voyager 1 has given scientists a glimpse at what space looks like beyond the influence of our sun.

Yet its long years in the harsh environment of space have done a number on the probe, which was designed to last just four years. In particular, degraded performance and low power supplies have forced NASA to turn off six of its 10 instruments, and its communication has gotten even spottier than can be explained by the fact that cosmic mechanics mean a signal takes nearly one Earth day to travel between humans and the probe.

When the latest communications glitch occurred last fall, scientists could still send signals to the distant probe, and they could tell that the spacecraft was operating. But all they got from Voyager 1 was gibberish—what NASA described in December 2023 as “a repeating pattern of ones and zeros.” The team was able to trace the issue back to a part of the spacecraft’s computer system called the flight data subsystem, or FDS, and identified that a particular chip within that system had failed.

Mission personnel couldn’t repair the chip. They were, however, able to break the code held on the failed chip into pieces they could tuck into spare corners of the FDS’s memory, according to NASA. The first such fix was transmitted to Voyager 1 on April 18. With a total distance of 30 billion miles to cross from Earth to the spacecraft and back, the team had to wait nearly two full days for a response from the probe. But on April 20 NASA got confirmation that the initial fix worked. Additional commands to rewrite the rest of the FDS system’s lost code are scheduled for the coming weeks, according to the space agency, including commands that will restore the spacecraft’s ability to send home science data.

Although, for now, Voyager 1 appears to be on the mend, NASA scientists know it won’t last forever. Sooner or later, a glitch they can’t fix will occur, or the spacecraft’s ever dwindling fuel supply will run out for good. Until then NASA is determined to get as much data as possible out of the venerable spacecraft—and its twin, Voyager 2, which experienced its own communications glitch earlier in 2023 .

For the last five months, it seemed very possible that a 46-year-old conversation had finally reached its end.

Since its launch from Kennedy Space Center on Sept. 5, 1977, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft has diligently sent regular updates to Earth on the health of its systems and data collected from its onboard instruments.

But in November, the craft went quiet.

Voyager 1 is now some 15 billion miles away from Earth. Somewhere in the cold interstellar space between our sun and the closest stars, its flight data system stopped communicating with the part of the probe that allows it to send signals back to Earth. Engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge could tell that Voyager 1 was getting its messages, but nothing was coming back.

“We’re to the point where the hardware is starting to age,” said Linda Spilker, the project scientist for the Voyager mission. “It’s like working on an antique car, from 15 billion miles away.”

Week after week, engineers sent troubleshooting commands to the spacecraft, each time patiently waiting the 45 hours it takes to get a response here on Earth — 22.5 hours traveling at the speed of light to reach the probe, and 22.5 hours back.

Space Artist Final

Science & Medicine

This space artist created the Golden Record and changed the way we see the universe

Space artist Jon Lomberg has produced work that attempts to visualize what we can’t truly see, and to communicate with creatures we can’t yet imagine.

July 26, 2023

By March, the team had figured out that a memory chip that stored some of the flight data system’s software code had failed, turning the craft’s outgoing communications into gibberish.

A long-distance repair wasn’t possible. There wasn’t enough space anywhere in the system to shift the code in its entirety. So after manually reviewing the code line by line, engineers broke it up and tucked the pieces into the available slots of memory.

They sent a command to Voyager on Thursday. In the early morning hours Saturday, the team gathered around a conference table at JPL: laptops open, coffee and boxes of doughnuts in reach.

At 6:41 a.m., data from the craft showed up on their screens. The fix had worked .

“We went from very quiet and just waiting patiently to cheers and high-fives and big smiles and sighs of relief,” Spilker said. “I’m very happy to once again have a meaningful conversation with Voyager 1.”

Voyager 1 is one of two identical space probes. Voyager 2, launched two weeks before Voyager 1, is now about 13 billion miles from Earth, the two crafts’ trajectories having diverged somewhere around Saturn. (Voyager 2 continued its weekly communications uninterrupted during Voyager 1’s outage.)

They are the farthest-flung human-made objects in the universe, having traveled farther from their home planet than anything else this species has built. The task of keeping communications going grows harder with each passing day. Every 24 hours, Voyager 1 travels 912,000 miles farther away from us. As that distance grows, the signal becomes slower and weaker.

When the probe visited Jupiter in 1979, it was sending back data at a rate of 115.2 kilobits per second, Spilker said. Today, 45 years and more than 14 billion miles later, data come back at a rate of 40 bits per second.

The team is cautiously optimistic that the probes will stay in contact for three more years, long enough to celebrate the mission’s 50th anniversary in 2027, Spilker said. They could conceivably last until the 2030s.

The conversation can’t last forever. Microscopic bits of silica keep clogging up the thrusters that keep the probes’ antennas pointed toward Earth, which could end communications. The power is running low. Eventually, the day will come when both Voyagers stop transmitting data to Earth, and the first part of their mission ends.

But on the day each craft goes quiet, they begin a new era, one that could potentially last far longer. Each probe is equipped with a metallic album cover containing a Golden Record , a gold-plated copper disk inscribed with sounds and images meant to describe the species that built the Voyagers and the planet they came from.

Erosion in space is negligible; the images could be readable for another billion years or more. Should any other intelligent life form encounter one of the Voyager probes and have a means of retrieving the data from the record, they will at the very least have a chance to figure out who sent them — even if our species is by that time long gone.

Members of the Voyager team celebrate at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory after receiving data about the health and status of Voyager 1 for the first time in months.

NASA says it is once again able to get meaningful information back from the Voyager 1 probe, after months of troubleshooting a glitch that had this venerable spacecraft sending home messages that made no sense.

The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes launched in 1977 on a mission to study Jupiter and Saturn but continued onward through the outer reaches of the solar system. In 2012, Voyager 1 became the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space, the previously unexplored region between the stars. (Its twin, traveling in a different direction, followed suit six years later.)

Voyager 1 had been faithfully sending back readings about this mysterious new environment for years — until November, when its messages suddenly became incoherent .

NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft is talking nonsense. Its friends on Earth are worried

NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft is talking nonsense. Its friends on Earth are worried

It was a serious problem that had longtime Voyager scientists worried that this historic space mission wouldn't be able to recover. They'd hoped to be able to get precious readings from the spacecraft for at least a few more years, until its power ran out and its very last science instrument quit working.

For the last five months, a small team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California has been working to fix it. The team finally pinpointed the problem to a memory chip and figured out how to restore some essential software code.

"When the mission flight team heard back from the spacecraft on April 20, they saw that the modification worked: For the first time in five months, they have been able to check the health and status of the spacecraft," NASA stated in an update.

The usable data being returned so far concerns the workings of the spacecraft's engineering systems. In the coming weeks, the team will do more of this software repair work so that Voyager 1 will also be able to send science data, letting researchers once again see what the probe encounters as it journeys through interstellar space.

NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft finally phones home after 5 months of no contact

On Saturday, April 5, Voyager 1 finally "phoned home" and updated its NASA operating team about its health.

An illustration of a spacecraft with a white disk in space.

NASA's interstellar explorer Voyager 1 is finally communicating with ground control in an understandable way again. On Saturday (April 20), Voyager 1 updated ground control about its health status for the first time in 5 months. While the Voyager 1 spacecraft still isn't sending valid science data back to Earth, it is now returning usable information about the health and operating status of its onboard engineering systems.

Thirty-five years after its launch in 1977, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to leave the solar system and enter interstellar space . It was followed out of our cosmic quarters by its space-faring sibling, Voyager 2 , six years later in 2018. Voyager 2, thankfully, is still operational and communicating well with Earth.

The two spacecraft remain the only human-made objects exploring space beyond the influence of the sun. However, on Nov. 14, 2023, after 11 years of exploring interstellar space and while sitting a staggering 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, Voyager 1's binary code — computer language composed of 0s and 1s that it uses to communicate with its flight team at NASA — stopped making sense.

Related: We finally know why NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft stopped communicating — scientists are working on a fix

In March, NASA's Voyager 1 operating team sent a digital "poke" to the spacecraft, prompting its flight data subsystem (FDS) to send a full memory readout back home.

This memory dump revealed to scientists and engineers that the "glitch" is the result of a corrupted code contained on a single chip representing around 3% of the FDS memory. The loss of this code rendered Voyager 1's science and engineering data unusable.

People, many of whom are wearing matching blue shirts, celebrating at a conference table.

The NASA team can't physically repair or replace this chip, of course, but what they can do is remotely place the affected code elsewhere in the FDS memory. Though no single section of the memory is large enough to hold this code entirely, the team can slice it into sections and store these chunks separately. To do this, they will also have to adjust the relevant storage sections to ensure the addition of this corrupted code won't cause those areas to stop operating individually, or working together as a whole. In addition to this, NASA staff will also have to ensure any references to the corrupted code's location are updated.

On April 18, 2024, the team began sending the code to its new location in the FDS memory. This was a painstaking process, as a radio signal takes 22.5 hours to traverse the distance between Earth and Voyager 1, and it then takes another 22.5 hours to get a signal back from the craft.

By Saturday (April 20), however, the team confirmed their modification had worked. For the first time in five months, the scientists were able to communicate with Voyager 1 and check its health. Over the next few weeks, the team will work on adjusting the rest of the FDS software and aim to recover the regions of the system that are responsible for packaging and returning vital science data from beyond the limits of the solar system.

NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft is depicted in this artist’s concept traveling through interstellar ... [+] space, or the space between stars, which it entered in 2012.

Voyager 1 has finally returned usable data to NASA from outside the solar system after five months offline.

Launched in 1977 and now in its 46th year, the probe has been suffering from communication issues since November 14. The same thing also happened in 2022 . However, this week, NASA said that engineers were finally able to get usable data about the health and status of its onboard engineering systems.

Fixing Voyager 1 has been slow work. It’s currently over 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, which means a radio message takes about 22.5 hours to reach it—and the same again to receive an answer.

The problem appears to have been its flight data subsystem, one of the spacecraft’s three onboard computers. Its job is to package the science and engineering data before it’s sent to Earth. Since the computer chip that stores its memory and some of its code is broken, engineers had to reinsert that code into a new location.

Next up for engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California is to adjust other parts of the FDS software so Voyager 1 can resume sending science data.

The longest-running and most distant spacecraft in history, Voyager 1, was launched on September 5, 1977, while its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2, was launched a little earlier, on August 20, 1977. Voyager 2—now 12 billion miles away and traveling more slowly—continues to operate normally.

Both are now beyond what astronomers call the heliopause—a protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields created by the sun, which is thought to represent the sun’s farthest influence. Voyager 1 got to the heliopause in 2012 and Voyager 2 in 2018.

The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken Feb. 14, 1990, by NASA’s Voyager 1 at a distance of ... [+] 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers) from the sun. The image inspired the title of scientist Carl Sagan's book, "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space," in which he wrote: "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us."

Since their launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard Titan-Centaur rockets, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have had glittering careers. Both photographed Jupiter and Saturn in 1979 and 1980 before going their separate ways. Voyager 1 could have visited Pluto, but that was sacrificed so scientists could get images of Saturn’s moon, Titan, a maneuver that made it impossible for it to reach any other body in the solar system. Meanwhile, Voyager 2 took slingshots around the planets to also image Uranus in 1986 and Neptune in 1989—the only spacecraft ever to image the two outer planets.

On February 14, 1990, when 3.7 billion miles from Earth, Voyager 1 turned its cameras back toward the sun and took an image that included our planet as “a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.” Known as the “Pale Blue Dot,” it’s one of the most famous photos ever taken. It was remastered in 2019 .

Inside NASA's 5-month fight to save the Voyager 1 mission in interstellar space

Artist's concept depicts NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft entering interstellar space.

After working for five months to re-establish communication with the farthest-flung human-made object in existence, NASA announced this week that the Voyager 1 probe had finally phoned home.

For the engineers and scientists who work on NASA’s longest-operating mission in space, it was a moment of joy and intense relief.

“That Saturday morning, we all came in, we’re sitting around boxes of doughnuts and waiting for the data to come back from Voyager,” said Linda Spilker, the project scientist for the Voyager 1 mission at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. “We knew exactly what time it was going to happen, and it got really quiet and everybody just sat there and they’re looking at the screen.”

When at long last the spacecraft returned the agency’s call, Spilker said the room erupted in celebration.

“There were cheers, people raising their hands,” she said. “And a sense of relief, too — that OK, after all this hard work and going from barely being able to have a signal coming from Voyager to being in communication again, that was a tremendous relief and a great feeling.”

Members of the Voyager flight team celebrate in a conference room at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on April 20.

The problem with Voyager 1 was first detected in November . At the time, NASA said it was still in contact with the spacecraft and could see that it was receiving signals from Earth. But what was being relayed back to mission controllers — including science data and information about the health of the probe and its various systems — was garbled and unreadable.

That kicked off a monthslong push to identify what had gone wrong and try to save the Voyager 1 mission.

Spilker said she and her colleagues stayed hopeful and optimistic, but the team faced enormous challenges. For one, engineers were trying to troubleshoot a spacecraft traveling in interstellar space , more than 15 billion miles away — the ultimate long-distance call.

“With Voyager 1, it takes 22 1/2 hours to get the signal up and 22 1/2 hours to get the signal back, so we’d get the commands ready, send them up, and then like two days later, you’d get the answer if it had worked or not,” Spilker said.

A Titan/Centaur-6 launch vehicle carries NASA's Voyager 1 at the Kennedy Space Center on Sept. 5, 1977.

The team eventually determined that the issue stemmed from one of the spacecraft’s three onboard computers. Spilker said a hardware failure, perhaps as a result of age or because it was hit by radiation, likely messed up a small section of code in the memory of the computer. The glitch meant Voyager 1 was unable to send coherent updates about its health and science observations.

NASA engineers determined that they would not be able to repair the chip where the mangled software is stored. And the bad code was also too large for Voyager 1's computer to store both it and any newly uploaded instructions. Because the technology aboard Voyager 1 dates back to the 1960s and 1970s, the computer’s memory pales in comparison to any modern smartphone. Spilker said it’s roughly equivalent to the amount of memory in an electronic car key.

The team found a workaround, however: They could divide up the code into smaller parts and store them in different areas of the computer’s memory. Then, they could reprogram the section that needed fixing while ensuring that the entire system still worked cohesively.

That was a feat, because the longevity of the Voyager mission means there are no working test beds or simulators here on Earth to test the new bits of code before they are sent to the spacecraft.

“There were three different people looking through line by line of the patch of the code we were going to send up, looking for anything that they had missed,” Spilker said. “And so it was sort of an eyes-only check of the software that we sent up.”

The hard work paid off.

NASA reported the happy development Monday, writing in a post on X : “Sounding a little more like yourself, #Voyager1.” The spacecraft’s own social media account responded , saying, “Hi, it’s me.”

So far, the team has determined that Voyager 1 is healthy and operating normally. Spilker said the probe’s scientific instruments are on and appear to be working, but it will take some time for Voyager 1 to resume sending back science data.

Voyager 1 and its twin, the Voyager 2 probe, each launched in 1977 on missions to study the outer solar system. As it sped through the cosmos, Voyager 1 flew by Jupiter and Saturn, studying the planets’ moons up close and snapping images along the way.

Voyager 2, which is 12.6 billion miles away, had close encounters with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and continues to operate as normal.

In 2012, Voyager 1 ventured beyond the solar system , becoming the first human-made object to enter interstellar space, or the space between stars. Voyager 2 followed suit in 2018.

Spilker, who first began working on the Voyager missions when she graduated college in 1977, said the missions could last into the 2030s. Eventually, though, the probes will run out of power or their components will simply be too old to continue operating.

Spilker said it will be tough to finally close out the missions someday, but Voyager 1 and 2 will live on as “our silent ambassadors.”

Both probes carry time capsules with them — messages on gold-plated copper disks that are collectively known as The Golden Record . The disks contain images and sounds that represent life on Earth and humanity’s culture, including snippets of music, animal sounds, laughter and recorded greetings in different languages. The idea is for the probes to carry the messages until they are possibly found by spacefarers in the distant future.

“Maybe in 40,000 years or so, they will be getting relatively close to another star,” Spilker said, “and they could be found at that point.”

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA has finally heard back from Voyager 1 again in a way that makes sense.

The most distant spacecraft from Earth stopped sending back understandable data last November. Flight controllers traced the blank communication to a bad computer chip and rearranged the spacecraft’s coding to work around the trouble.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California declared success after receiving good engineering updates late last week. The team is still working to restore transmission of the science data.

It takes 22 1/2 hours to send a signal to Voyager 1, more than 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) away in interstellar space. The signal travel time is double that for a round trip.

Contact was never lost, rather it was like making a phone call where you can’t hear the person on the other end, a JPL spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Launched in 1977 to study Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1 has been exploring interstellar space — the space between star systems — since 2012. Its twin, Voyager 2, is 12.6 billion miles (20 billion kilometers) away and still working fine.
