Carnival Magic ® has its very own Piano Bar too, where you can simply relax and take in some good tunes and good vibes, or even join in on a sing-along around the piano. Carnival Magic - Cruise Ship Photo Tour and Profile

carnival cruise magic pictures

Carnival Cruise Lines

The 130,000-ton, 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic was launched in Venice in May 2011. She was Carnival's 23rd ship and Carnival Corporation's 100th. Mainstream cruising sure has come a long way in size, as is seen in this picture comparing Carnival's first ship with the corporation's 100th. What doesn't show in the picture is how much the onboard experience and amenities have improved over the past 40 years.

The Carnival Magic sails seven-day cruises year-round to the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexico from its home port in Port Canaveral, Florida. This review and photos are from the inaugural  9-day cruise from Venice to Barcelona .

The company's goal is to factor in "fun" and "memorable" when designing a new Carnival ship. The Carnival Magic is a great ship and fits Carnival's "fun ship" and "memorable" theme perfectly. Carnival executives know their primary target market is middle America, and this ship is geared towards the type of memorable cruise vacation North American families and couples are looking for--social, fun, affordable, unpretentious, and good value for their vacation dollar. They've certainly succeeded with this ship.

The Carnival Magic is much like her sister ship the Carnival Dream launched in 2009, but has a few interesting differences outlined below that are discussed in more detail further in this article.

Let's take a detailed tour of the Carnival Magic.

Carnival Magic -- Dining and Cuisine

The Carnival Magic features many favorite dining venues that past Carnival cruisers recognize. In addition, the cruise ship has two exciting new dining options that have quickly become guest favorites.

The first new venue was an overnight success from its first sailing. The RedFrog Pub is Carnival Cruise Line's first onboard pub. Located on deck 5, the RedFrog has both indoor and outdoor seating for 120 guests. Its theme is a mixture of the Caribbean and Key West, with palm trees and decor straight out of a beach bar. Although the inaugural sailing was in the Mediterranean, this laid-back cruise ship definitely has a Caribbean feel. The RedFrog serves Caribbean-themed pub snacks such as coconut shrimp, chicken wings, Bahamian conch salad, and fried grouper fingers. Yummy, and a perfect lunch, snack, or light dinner. The pub also has live music that fits the Caribbean theme and a wide selection of island beers, frozen libations, and rum drinks.

Carnival has brewed its first private-label draught beer especially for the Carnival Magic, called Thirsty Frog Red.  As you might expect, Thirsty Frog Red is red in color and has a very slight fruity taste. Very tasty.

Carnival has made excellent use of the space over the Lido Marketplace, adding an Italian family-style dining venue called Cucina del Capitano ("The Captain's Kitchen"). This traditional Italian restaurant, with its red and white checked tablecloths and kegs of Chianti, pays homage to Carnival's Italian heritage. Past Carnival cruisers already know that all of the line's captains are Italian and many Carnival ships, including the Carnival Magic, were built in Italy. The menu consists of made-to-order Italian favorites developed by the cruise line's executive chef and four chefs de cuisine who spent three weeks in Italy researching and eating with some of Italy's finest chefs and their families. Those who don't like Chianti can choose from a wine list specializing in Italian vintages or one of the specialty cocktails such as a Limoncello Martini designed just for Cucina del Capitano.

Meals at Cucina del Capitano are casual and fun, featuring homemade pasta and other Italian specialties. Some recipes come straight from the Captains' (or their wives') kitchens. Most diners love two other elements of this restaurant. The first is all the old captioned-photographs lining the walls. Most of these pictures either came from Carnival's archives or from the personal collections of Carnival's current or former captains. The second is the warm service, touched with fun. The waiters serve Chianti from rolling kegs and entertain the diners with lively songs.

Carnival hasn't changed all the restaurants on the Carnival Magic, continuing with two large main dining rooms, Northern Lights (midship on decks 3 and 4 with 948 seats) and Southern Lights (aft on decks 3 and 4 with 1,248 seats). Dinner is served at two fixed seatings (6:00 pm and 8:15 pm) or with anytime dining between 5:45 and 9:30 pm. Dinner usually includes six appetizers and soups, two salads, and six main courses. Also offered are traditional selections like Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled flat iron steak, grilled chicken, and gourmet burgers. The dessert menu also features six selections, including a Carnival favorite--the Warm Chocolate Melting Cake.

Carnival still has its classic alternative Prime Steakhouse on the Carnival Magic. This room is elegant and has a great atmosphere. If you like beef, lamb, or lobster, you will love the Prime Steakhouse. Located aft on deck 5, this contemporary steakhouse has prime beef ranging from a 9-ounce filet to a 24-ounce porterhouse. Those looking for a "lighter" meal can enjoy the fish or chicken. The side orders are huge and delicious, with wasabi mashed potatoes and sauteed mushrooms table favorites. Although Prime has a surcharge, it's a great place for a special meal to accompany your unforgettable cruise vacation. It only seats 69, so get your reservations early.

Those looking for another unforgettable experience might choose to experience the Chef's Table in the galley. Eight to twelve guests get to savor a special menu that begins with a champagne and canapés cocktail hour, followed by a personal tour of the galley in operation, and a seven-course meal with wine pairings. This one comes at a steep price but would provide some great stories to take back home.

The Lido Marketplace offers international flavors at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Almost every type of cuisine is offered on one day or another, including Italian, Asian, Tex-Mex, tandoori, and all sorts of deli sandwiches and salad-fixings. Pizza and frozen yogurt are available 24-hours a day.

On sea days, Carnival Magic's outdoor Lanai area on deck 5 transforms into an on-deck barbecue, dishing up grilled items such as sliders, chicken, and hot dogs. Salads, homemade chips and salsa, quesadillas, and traditional barbecue accompaniments are also included.

Also on deck 5 in the Ocean Plaza is the Plaza Cafe, a patisserie serving specialty coffees and sweets such as baked-on-board cakes, pies, and cookies for a nominal charge. The Plaza Cafe also has freshly made milkshakes and premium ice cream. With both indoor and outdoor seating in a central location, this is a busy hub of the ship.

One of the most popular places late in the afternoon on deck 5 near the Ocean Plaza(from about 5 pm to 8:15 pm) is the sushi bar with complimentary freshly-made sushi.

The Carnival Magic also has complimentary 24-hour room service with a selection of sandwiches, salads, and snacks.

Carnival Magic -- Outdoor Deck Areas

Everyone seems to enjoy the outdoor deck areas of the Carnival Magic. The SportSquare area on the top deck aft offers guests the chance to try the cruise industry's first ropes course, aptly named the SkyCourse. The 230-foot ropes course has 20 bridges, each named for a Carnival home port city; 10 distinct elements; and 20 different activities over two different loops, an inner basic loop and an outer more "challenging" route. Both looked very difficult and a little too thrilling, although participants wear a safety harness while traversing the nets, ropes, and bridges. The course was busy day and night, and the thrill-seekers have a great view of the ocean far below. Participants are checking out the view while resting between activities and elements. Seeing the smiles on kids' and grown-ups' faces shows they were having a good time while improving their balance, coordination, and confidence. It's certainly a great activity for families and up to 1400 people per day can use the course.

Also in the SportSquare complex are a miniature golf course; outdoor weightlifting area; a Vita exercise course with machines and stations; a lighted multi-purpose court for basketball, volleyball and soccer; and ping pong and foosball tables. Circling the entire area is an eighth-mile jogging track with great views of the sea and all the people enjoying the SportSquare activities. A full bar with a large flat-screen display is available for those who just want to relax and check out the sports action in the area or on TV.

The outdoor decks on the Carnival Magic include the WaterWorks aqua park with its exhilarating (or terrifying) 312-foot spiral "Twister" and "Drainpipe" water slides, as well as an Aqua Play splash park for youngsters and their families. One new feature of the splash park is the "Power Drencher", a gigantic, 300-gallon "dump bucket". The bucket slowly fills before tipping on its side and making its own waterfall. Don't worry, no one gets 300 gallons dumped on their head--a bell clangs just before the bucket dumps, and a large tray spreads the water out amongst several areas. People loved it, although bah-humbug me thought the ringing bell a little annoying.

Forward on the top deck is Serenity, the adults-only quiet area, with plenty of very comfortable chaise lounges, hammocks, barrel chairs, umbrellas, whirlpools, and a full-service bar. Serenity also has two large whirlpools.

The Carnival Magic has two resort-style pool areas. The midship Beach Pool is the largest area and features a Seaside Theatre with a 270-square-foot LED screen and poolside seating. In the daytime, guests sunbathe, read, or watch sports, cartoons, or concerts on the movie screen. At night, movies are shown. The Tides Pool is aft on the Carnival Magic and also has plenty of seating and great views of the wake of the ship when sailing.

The Lanai on deck 5 is a half-mile outdoor promenade encircling the Carnival Magic, with easy access to the Ocean Plaza, RedFrog Pub, and other indoor areas of the ship. The Lanai also has seating and wind deflectors, making it a pleasant place to sit even on windy days. Four cantilevered whirlpools extend out over the sides of the ship, providing a relaxing place to watch the world go by on the Lanai.

Carnival Magic -- Indoor Public Areas

The  interior decor of the Carnival Magic  is bright and fun, although not quite as over-the-top as some previous Carnival ships. Principal designer Joe Farcus seems to have gone for a slightly more subdued look, which  Carnival  guests still love. Don't worry, the cruise line hasn't sacrificed one bit of fun, with some memorable touches.

The central atrium/lobby area is gorgeous, terrific lighting and multi-deck glass elevators soaring towards the overhead skylight. The guest relations desk and shore excursion desk are on deck 3, along with a large dance floor. A small bandstand, where live musicians perform night and day, is suspended over the dance floor. Guests can lean over the railing on all the decks above and listen to the music and watch the action below.

On deck 5 surrounding the atrium are the retail shops. Most of these are like those on other ships--Carnival-branded merchandise, clothing, jewelry, liquor, perfumes, etc. However, one new retail shop is going to be very popular with the kids--Cherry on Top. It's more than bins of colorful candy in a candy store, although that's the most eye-catching feature when you enter the shop. The Cherry on Top shop also has cute gifts, cards, and flowers, all designed to make a special person in your life feel even more special.

The thousands of kids sailing on the Carnival Magic also appreciate the 19,000 square feet of space dedicated just to them. Camp Carnival caters to those 2-11; Circle C is for the 'tweens ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for the older teens ages 15 to 17. Each group has its own set of counselors, own space, and age-appropriate activities.

Parents of young children appreciate Carnival's Night Owls program on the Carnival Magic. This is an enhancement of the cruise line's babysitting service and is on all Carnival ships.

Adults also appreciate the 22,770 square-foot Cloud 9 Spa, with its combination of fitness, wellness, workout, and personal-pampering spaces. The space is quiet and soothing, and the thalassotherapy pool, treatment rooms, and thermal suites are especially great for unwinding and ridding the body of tension and stress. The fitness facility has all the latest equipment including treadmills, bicycles, fitness machines, spinning equipment, and ellipticals.

The Hat Trick casino has all the popular table games and even some penny slots.

A Carnival ship wouldn't be a "fun ship" without a wide variety of bars and lounges, and the Carnival Magic is no different. Many of the bars and lounges are on deck 5, and each has its own personality. The 400-seat Spotlight Lounge has a small stage and dance floor, making it perfect for comedy acts and Superstar Live Karaoke (with a live four-piece band and backup singer). The Play It Again Piano Bar is a popular spot; quiet when the pianist is not playing, but full of fun (and singing) when he is. Vibe is the name of the dance club, and everyone loves the lighted tables and purple mood lighting. Of course, you can find a drink at the RedFrog Pub or Ocean Plaza bars, both on deck 5.

Deck 5 isn't the only place you can find a bar on the Carnival Magic. There are several bars on the pool decks, and the Magic Bar in the deck 3 lobby is a good place to people-watch or listen to the live music. The very quiet, small Escape Bar is tucked in a corner next to the Northern Lights Dining Room and the Books & Games library.

The Carnival Magic has a large conference center area on deck 3 that can be used for meetings and weddings. Embracing modern technology, the Carnival Magic has dozens of "Fun Hubs" of computers scattered throughout the ship. The Fun Hub is a social network and shipboard Intranet portal that provides access to a variety of information on Carnival Magic's services, facilities, and daily activities. Carnival Magic also offers cell phone service and bow-to-stern WiFi, so those bringing along their own computers can access the Fun Hub and surf the Web from their own cabin or common area on the ship.

The 1,300-seat Showtime Theater on the Carnival Magic has a huge stage, perfect for its three new production shows and for a wide variety of entertainment. The Showtime Theater is also used for bingo, presentations, and lectures.

Carnival Magic Cabins and Suites

The 1,845  Carnival Magic cabins  and suites are similar to the wide array of  accommodations on the Carnival Dream . The cabins are a nice size, with plenty of storage. Families love the two-bathroom/five-berth cabins and the connecting staterooms. Carnival has continued the cove balcony cabins on deck 2 that have cozy balconies closer to the water line and the spa cabins that provide special access and benefits.

Carnival  has kept many of its guests' favorite venues on the new Carnival Magic, but also added some new ones that are sure to please its thousands of mainstream North American guests. Although the ship is primarily marketed to North America, we had an international group of guests on our Mediterranean cruise, including about 600 Russians. They all seemed to be having a great time, and it's fun to interact with people from different cultures and countries on a cruise ship.

The Carnival Magic is a good fit for those who love big cruise ships and are looking for a fun and memorable cruise, filled with opportunities to socialize with other guests or with their own companions or family. It doesn't have as many alternative restaurants as many other newer ships do, but there's enough diversity of cuisine to satisfy anyone on a one- or two-week cruise.

Launched in 2011, Carnival Magic has received numerous updates over the years. Most recently, Magic underwent a small refurbishment in 2021 to expand the casino and refresh the swimming pools and other common areas.

Magic was the world’s first vessel with a ropes course at sea. Guests also have access to entertainment and activities like mini-golf, a casino, an arcade, live shows, the Punchliner Comedy Club and the WaterWorks water park. Those just looking to relax can book a treatment at the spa or soak in the whirlpools at the Serenity Adult Only Retreat.

The ship's sheer size (carrying up to 3,690 passengers and 1,367 crew members) also means more versatile dining options. Passengers can pick from an abundance of venues, including two main dining rooms and the expansive Lido buffet. When they aren't eating or exploring the ship, travelers can also kick back in their cabins. While Interior and Ocean View staterooms are more affordable and compact, Balcony and Suite category rooms offer more space and better ocean views.

Carnival Magic departs from Miami  and Norfolk, Virginia, for sailings in Bermuda , the Bahamas , Canada and the Caribbean.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship’s Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship’s Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. All ship Traveler Ratings are based on ratings provided under license by Cruiseline.com.

The Carnival cruise ship Magic has a total of 35 wheelchair-accessible cabins (for disabled passengers) and 83 Cloud 9 Spa cabins (of them 24 Inside, 4 Ocean-view, 53 Balcony, and 4 Suite). The number of all cabin categories is 34.

Connecting rooms ("family cabins") are located on decks 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. The list of connecting cabins grades includes 2 beds (4E, 8P), 3 beds (PT, 6L), 3 beds (6A), 2-3 beds (8B, 8E, 8D), 2-4 beds (8A, 8F), and 2-3-4 beds (6M, 7C). Handicap staterooms (35 total) are in categories OS-Ocean Suie (1), Balcony (2), Oceanview (13), Interior (15) and Small Interior (4).

Follows the review of Carnival Magic staterooms as amenities, furniture, and complimentary services:

Carnival Magic Suites (Grand, Ocean, Cloud 9 Spa) have 2 twin beds (convertible to king), dressing area (walk-in closet, vanity table, chair), private bathroom (WC, shower, bathtub, bidet, double sinks). Some GS-OS suites have a single/double sofa bed for 3rd/4th person. All balcony accommodations feature a private balcony with sliding glass doors (table, patio chairs, rail with clear glass panel).

All Carnival Cloud 9 Spa cabins have exclusive access to the Spa facilities on Panorama Deck 11. Their grades are Spa Suite (SS), Spa Balcony (8S, 8P), Spa Oceanview (6S) and Spa Inside (4S). Carnival Cloud 9 Spa rooms have the following complimentary amenities, services and perks (applicable for two guests per stateroom only): Thermal Suite and Thalassotherapy Pool (complimentary, unlimited access), 2 fitness classes (complimentary, Yoga or Pilates), 2 metabolism tests (complimentary), 1 Scrub Kit (complimentary, for the Thermal Suite), bathrobes, slippers, deluxe in-room bath amenities (by Elemis – shampoo, conditioner, sharp shower gel, vitamin-rich body lotion, 1 hand and 1 body soap disks), priority Spa reservations (must be made by 6 pm on embarkation day). Passengers booked in Cloud 9 Spa cabins also enjoy Spa treatment discounts while the ship is docked in ports of call – 20% off (1st), 30% off (2nd) and 40% off (3rd treatment).

Premium Vista Balcony cabins are located around the ship’s aft corners and have same suite amenities (incl a wrap-around balcony). Extended Balcony cabins are in 2 grades – 8N and 8M (both with aft ship location). These staterooms have 50% larger balconies, 3 closets (in all grades balcony rooms), full bathroom (shower). Cove Balcony cabins feature floor-ceiling window doors leading to a private cove (partially enclosed) veranda.

Oceanview cabins have a picture window and twin beds don’t convert to king when both upper beds are in use. Some have a sofa and/or upper beds (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person. Spa Oceanview rooms are with obstructed views, and some are with upper bed (Pullman) for 4th person.

Inside cabins with windows have either Porthole Window (PT, on decks 1 and 2) or Picture Window (4J, on decks 6, 7, 9 and 10-Lido). Some Porthole cabins have a sofa bed for a 3rd person, some Picture Window rooms have a sofa and/or upper bed (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person. Small Inside cabins have bunk beds (upper/lower Pullman beds), living area (vanity, chair), bathroom (shower).

All Carnival Magic staterooms offer as standard/complimentary amenities a living area (vanity, seating), smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies, bookings-reservations, Room Service ordering), direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, en-suite bathroom (WC-toilet, shower, single sink-vanity, bathrobes, bathroom amenity basket/replenished upon request), custom-made beds (Carnival Comfort Bed System), beach towels, mini-bar/fridge, individual air-conditioning, complimentary 24-hour room service. Bibles (Gideon version) are provided upon request.

The Carnival’s Sail & Sign card (cashless onboard credit account) doubles as stateroom key. The S&S credit program allows charges on purchases and tips/gratuities directly to a personal account throughout the Carnival cruise. The card has a designated owner and must be utilized for all money transactions on the ship as cash is accepted as a form of payment only at the casino. These cards are provided to all passengers (incl minors) immediately upon boarding the ship. Balance updates are provided at Guest Services desk (at any time). They can also be checked via the smart TV in each stateroom.

The ship’s interactive TV system allows passengers to purchase movies on demand, to order room service and to check the Sail & Sign account’s status. The on-demand movie list has approx 25 films available for ordering at USD 5 per movie. Adult-content films cost USD 10 per movie. Depending on satellite reception (Carnival Magic location at sea), the complimentary in-cabin TV programming includes the following channels: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CNN (Domestic, International, Espanol), TCM (classic movies), cartoons (Boomerang, CN), TNT, TBS. There are 2 complimentary movie channels showing a film every 3 hours (both starting at 12 noon). One shows all-time favorites (PG -13 rated) and the other shows all-time family favorites (G / PG-rated). The following TV channels are Carnival-themed and also complimentary: Fun Finds TV, Cruise Director, Fun Aboard, Park West Art, Shore Tours, Ship Position, live cam views (webcams positioned forward and on lido deck), Audible Funtimes, Photo, Music. Sporting events (ESPN, ESPN 2) are shown only on big screens – at the ship’s Sports Bar and Seaside Theatre (not in cabins/suites). All the TV’s connection ports are intentionally disabled, which makes it impossible to connect it with personal devices (cameras, DVDs, USBs, iPods, gaming consoles, etc).

Bathroom amenities vary each time, so it’s advisable you bring your own. Samples may include toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, body lotion, razor, antiacids. There is a wall-mounted dispenser in the shower stall (for liquid soap and shampoo). Electric power outlets are located in the desk/vanity area – one 110 V outlet (3-pronged, USA grounded) and one 220 V outlet (European standard). The bathroom’s 2-pin plug can be used only for electric razors.

The new Carnival beds are Europe-manufactured exclusively for the company. The ensemble includes custom pillows (trademarked “New Generation Pillows”, 100% cotton), duvet (100% hypoallergenic, ultra-fine, satin-striped), cover, deluxe sheets (high-quality cotton), pillowcases (ultra-fine, satin-striped), 8-inch / 20 cm spring mattresses (trademarked “Carnival Comfort”). Alternative (non-allergenic) bedding is also available. It includes 100% polyester blankets, sheets and pillowcases (60/40 cotton-polyester) and New Generation Pillows (100% cotton). Note: Trundle beds don’t have Carnival Comfort mattresses.

Carnival-logoed Beach Towels are provided in each cruise accommodation for passengers to take ashore. Beach towels are also available for purchasing (at $22). Bathrobes (2) are provided in all cruise suites and also in “Cloud 9 Spa” cabins/suites. Additional bathrobes are provided upon request. For all other cruise accommodations, bathrobes are provided (upon request) during the turndown service on the first evening. Bathrobes can be purchased at $49 (adult size) and $24 (children sizes /2-4 yo and 6-8 yo).

Life jackets are used in cases of emergency only (not at the ship pools). Lifejackets are located within passenger/crew cabins (in the closet). They are available in 3 sizes – adult, child, and infant. Each of the cabins has a safe (located in the closet) with approx dimensions (inches/centimeters) – width (10/25), height (9/23) and depth (8/20). Cabin safes can be accessed by any magnetic strip card. It is advisable not to use a valid credit card (or driver’s license), but an old expired card (or some rewards card) instead. Some safes are with a keypad (personal code). Safes can be opened also by the ship’s security.

All cabin and suite mini-bars are stocked with premium liquors ($6-9,25), beer ($6,25), energy drinks ($5), soft soda/beverages ($2), bottled water ($3,75). In-cabin babysitting is not available (read more at Camp Ocean below). Cribs in cruise cabins are provided complimentary (upon request). In Main Dining Rooms are provided complimentary high chairs and booster seats.

Laundry facilities are at extra-charge – $3,25 (per washer or dryer load) and $1,5 per box (detergent/water softener, dispensed from the vending machine in the room). Launderettes (open between 6:30 am – 12 midnight) are located on all cabin decks. Each laundry room is equipped with 2-3 washers, 2-3 dryers, 1 ironing board/iron. All laundry machines are coinless (can be operated using S&S cards only). While the ship is in port, washing machines are closed (only dryers and irons can be used). Valet laundry service is handled through the cabin steward. Prices are per item – wash-and-press ($2 – $7,50) and dry-cleaning ($3 – $10,50).

Smoking in cabins/suites and on their balconies is prohibited. On Carnival Magic, smoking allowed areas (cigarettes /incl electronic cigarettes) are Vibe Nightclub (disco /not allowed on the dance floor), Casino (designated areas), Casino Bar. Smoking (incl of cigars and tobacco pipes) is allowed on designated outdoor areas on Deck 5 portside (forward/midship/aft) and on Deck 11 starboard (midship/aft).

Funville@Sea is free of charge Intranet service providing information on onboard activities and events schedule, bar and restaurant menus, deck maps, Fun Times (newspaper), FunAshore (tour guides), Carnival cruise news, itinerary-related weather reports, onboard social network (tracking/messaging other passengers). The complimentary service is available via the Infotainment system (in all cabins) and also at the FunHub stations around the ship.

Current Carnival Magic gratuities (per day per person) are USD 12,95 (for standard cabin passengers) and USD 13,95 for suite passengers. The list of perks for all suites includes: priority embarkation/debarkation/tendering (all ports), priority main dining room reservations, complimentary bottled water in cabins, a complimentary bag of laundry (one per cruise), enhanced turndown service.

Since 2017, Carnival Cruise Line offers a new program allowing ship passengers to customize their steward service by choosing to have the cabin serviced in the morning, at night or both (twice a day). All guests can choose from a list of additional cabin amenities, among which are bathrobes, extra pillows, blankets, closet hangers. All guests can also specify how often the bed linens to be changed during the cruise. Your personal preferences can be selected from a services menu card left in each of the ship’s staterooms. By default, if you make no selections on the card, your room service steward will service the accommodation twice daily.

Carnival Magic’s Theater Updated with New Lights

  • April 28, 2024

Carnival Magic Refit

The Carnival Magic’s 1500-seat Showtime Theater has been recently upgraded with the installation of 30 x new Robe PAINTE, 30 x LEDBeam 350 and 12 x miniPointe moving lights.

The new lights were installed while the ship was still in operation around Miami.

The refit saw the replacement of the original moving lights under the supervision of Carnival Cruise Line fleet supervisor for lighting Silviu Ardelean and lighting manager Alexander Nelson.

“We believe the PAINTE will be good for at least 10 years,” said Ardelean.

The lounge is located over decks 3, 4 and 5 of the Carnival Magic and serves as the ship’s main entertainment space. During the retrofit, the venue’s lighting was redesigned while maintaining the integrity and style of the original lighting design.

Cucina del Capitano menu: What to expect when you eat at Carnival Cruise Line's Italian restaurant

C ucina del Capitano, Carnival Cruise Line 's Italian restaurant, is a cruiser favorite. It offers a delightful, cozy spot to gather over a delicious meal, and there's something for just about everyone — from the biggest foodie to the pickiest eater — on the menu.

Here's a guide to what you can expect when you dine there, including what's on the menu, how much it'll cost you and a list of ships where you can find this eatery.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What is Cucina del Capitano on Carnival cruise ships?

Cucina del Capitano, which translates to "Captain's Kitchen" in English, is the Italian restaurant found on nearly one-third of Carnival's ships . It first rolled out on Carnival Magic in 2011, after the line decided to poll its Italian captains for their favorite recipes from home. From there, the Cucina del Capitano menu was born.

The restaurant offers delicious food options for cruisers who are hungry for traditional Italian dishes like pasta, chicken Parmesan and tiramisu that they can chase with a post-dinner limoncello.

Related: Carnival cruise food: The ultimate guide to restaurants and dining on board

While the decor and ambience can vary from vessel to vessel, the restaurants feel cozy, with family photos from the fleet's captains on the wall. You'll either be seated at a table with a red-and-white checkered tablecloth that makes you feel like you're sitting down to a backyard cookout or in a cozy alcove that makes the experience feel more like you've stepped into an Italian family's dining room for a big meal.

On most ships, the restaurant functions like a typical specialty restaurant . However, on Excel Class ships, the venue was designed as an overflow restaurant to take some of the pressure off of the main dining rooms during peak times. The restaurant is open to everyone, but only passengers with Your Time Dining — which allows cruisers to dine anytime they wish between 5 and 9 p.m. — can have dinner at Cucina del Capitano anytime during opening hours. Cruisers with set-seating dining are only allowed to eat there after 7:45 p.m.

Reservations are recommended.

Cucina del Capitano menu

Meals at Cucina del Capitano are broken into four categories or courses: starters, soups and salads; mains and pastas; sides; and desserts. Captain-recommended favorites are noted on the menu.

You might choose to start with cured tuna, meatballs, deep-fried shrimp, minestrone soup or a caprese salad. For your main course, try linguine with clams, spaghetti carbonara, grilled fish, veal marsala, a pork chop or captain-favorite chicken Parmesan. You can also opt for steakhouse fare — including filet mignon, surf 'n' turf or a grilled lamb chop — for a $23 surcharge.

For your sides, pick from roasted broccoli and cauliflower, lentils, spinach or crispy potatoes.

If you still have room for dessert, options include an apple pastry, frozen lemon tarte, baba (Italian rum cake) or tiramisu, a captain favorite. You can also order specialty coffees and digestifs, including limoncello, amaretto, sambuca, grappa and more.

A selection of wine (red, white and rose) and beer costs extra unless you have a drink package that covers your beverage choice.

A children's menu is available for kids 11 and younger. Selections include spaghetti with meatballs, fish sticks, chicken fingers, and macaroni and cheese, with a choice of either cannoli or lemon sherbet for dessert.

Additionally, six of the 11 ships that have Cucina del Capitano feature a free Captain's Pasta Bar option for lunch. The menu includes a choice of linguini, penne or farfalle, as well as sauces like tomato, Alfredo, white clam and meat sauce, as well as butter. Additional mix-ins include Italian sausage, chicken strips and a plethora of vegetables. Want something more hearty? You can also choose lasagna, and don't forget to toss in a side of Caesar salad or bread.

Note: Menu examples were accurate at the time of publication, but they are subject to change without notice.

Cucina del Capitano prices

Pricing is a bit confusing, as it varies according to ship.

On the line's newest Excel Class ships , Cucina del Capitano is free for all passengers during their first visit to the restaurant. Additional visits are $8 per person. The only exception is Carnival Jubilee ; every visit is free during the ship's inaugural season. After that, it will share the same pricing as Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras .

On the other eight ships that have the restaurant (see below), the cost is $24 per adult. Kids 11 and younger can dine for $11 from the children's menu.

Selections from the menu's steakhouse section will incur a fee of $23 per item. Alcohol costs extra unless you have a beverage package that covers it. An 18% gratuity will be added (except to free meals), and a $5 surcharge will apply for every main course after the first two per person.

The Captain's Pasta Bar, which is offered for lunch only on select ships, is complimentary.
