When to drink cava in Barcelona?

In Barcelona, there’s no strict “right” time to enjoy a glass of this bubbly delight. From brunches to late-night toasts, cava is a versatile drink suitable for any occasion. That said, locals often sip on cava during celebrations and special occasions, like birthdays, anniversaries, and festivals.

One of the most popular times to enjoy cava is during the festive season of Christmas and New Year’s. But if you’re just lounging at a tapas bar on a warm evening or celebrating a personal milestone, feel free to pop open a bottle.

The laid-back Barcelona vibe means no one’s judging, and everyone’s probably too busy enjoying their own glass of bubbly!

How much is a glass of cava in Barcelona?

If you’re in a typical Barcelona bar or restaurant, expect to pay anywhere from €3 to €6 for a glass of standard cava. Of course, the price can vary depending on the establishment and the quality of the cava you’re sipping on.

However, for those wanting to experience local life, head to a “cava bar.” These specialized bars often offer more competitive prices, sometimes even under €3 a glass.

And if you’re keen on splurging or trying some of the top-notch stuff, upscale restaurants or wine bars might charge upwards of €8 or even more for premium brands.

No matter your budget, there’s a cava experience waiting for you in the heart of Barcelona.

How to Visit Cava Wineries Near Barcelona, Spain

Cava winery Spain

If you’re a wine lover visiting Barcelona, Spain, a day trip to a nearby Cava winery should be on your itinerary.

The center of production for this Spanish sparkling wine is just outside the city in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. It’s a quick train ride away. So, you don’t even need to rent a car!

As an advanced WSET-certified wine expert , I’ve personally researched and explored the Cava region. And I put together this guide with all the details you need, including how to get there, top wineries to visit, and the best Cava wine tours.

So, let’s get started planning your Cava wine tasting adventure!

How to Get to Cava Wineries Near Barcelona

If you’re staying in Barcelona, getting to the town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia by public transportation is super easy. From the Plaça de Catalunya, you can hop on the R4 train toward Sant Vicenç de Calders. It’s about an hour’s ride out to the town.

Make sure to pay attention so you get off at the right stop (also called Sant Sadurní d’Anoia). Freixenet will be right in front of you. And it’s only about a 10-minute walk into the town.

If you’re planning to visit Freixenet, another option is to buy a combined round-trip train and tour ticket .

Cava Tour From Barcelona

If you prefer a guided option, there are some excellent wine tours led by local wine experts.

For private tours, I recommend this full-day tour that includes transportation, tastings at two family-run vineyards, and a tapas-style meal.

Or if you prefer a small-group Cava tour, this one is a great option that includes wine tasting, tapas, and exploring vineyards in a 4×4 vehicle.

Best Cava Wineries Near Barcelona

These Cava and Corpinnat producers all have tasting rooms in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia that are relatively easy to get to. And they offer winery tours and wine tastings in English.

I’d recommend sticking to two for a day trip. But you might be able to squeeze in a third if you time your tours and tastings right.

1. Codorníu

Codorniu cava bar in wine tasting room

If you want to see where it all started, there’s no better place than Codorníu .

Josep Raventós Fatjó was the first to make Cava. He was inspired by a trip to the Champagne region in 1872. And thought, “Hey, I could make something similar using Spanish grapes.”

He was pretty successful, and the idea spread to others in the area. After phylloxera hit in the 1880s, many others followed his lead and replanted their vineyards with white grapes suitable for sparkling wine production.

Codorníu grew larger and larger with each generation. It was eventually inherited by Josep Maria Raventós i Blanc, who later left to found Raventós i Blanc (which, unfortunately, you can’t visit). But prior to doing that, he played a major role in expanding Codorníu.

Today, Codorníu is still one of the largest producers of Cava wines, making a wide range of sparkling wines from both indigenous and Champagne grape varieties . I particularly liked their rosé Cava at the tasting. And they have a premium collection of Reservas, Gran Reservas, and the top-tier Paraje Calificado.

Visiting Tips

The winery is a bit out of town. I walked to it, but be warned that it’s uphill and takes about a half hour from the train station. So, if you’re not up to it, you can catch a taxi from the station.

The 75-minute Discovery Tour is a great option that includes a guided tour where you learn about the production of Spanish Cava and visit the cellars. This is followed by a tasting in their Cava bar. Check the site for other wine experience options like food pairings, chocolate tasting, and Cava tasting courses.

2. Recaredo

Recaredo bottle and glass of sparkling wine

Recaredo was founded in 1924 by Josep Mata Capellades, who named the winery after his father.

Recaredo can claim a few firsts in the Penedès wine region. They were the first to make a single varietal sparkling wine from 100% Xarel·lo. And they were the first to be certified biodynamic in 2010 (basically, a stricter version of organic).

I should also mention they were named Catalonia’s Best Winery in 2017 by the Catalan Association of Sommeliers. And in 2018, they joined Corpinnat.

Recaredo’s sparkling and still wines are aged at least 30 months, and some for as long as 30 years! I love the delicious brioche and toasty notes this gives their wines.

They also use natural cork stoppers for bottle aging rather than crown caps. They believe this better preserves the original character of the wine. But it requires removal (called disgorgement) by hand so it’s a lot of manual labor.

You can book an Origen Visit to tour the cellar and learn about how they make and age the wines. You’ll get to taste two of their aged Corpinnat sparkling wines and two of their Cellar Credo still wines.

Or you can opt for a private visit, where you’ll get to see the vineyard and enjoy food pairings with your tasting.

Which wine region should you visit? Click to take the quiz.

Gramona is another Corpinnat producer. A bit of a romantic story, it was founded after the marriage of Pilar Batlle and Bartolomé Gramona. They started producing sparkling wines under the Gramona name and released the first one in 1961.

As with the requirements of Corpinnat, Gramona is all organic. And, like Recaredo, they are also certified biodynamic and use natural cork stoppers during aging.

The average age of Gramona’s sparkling wines is 6 years. Their flagship wine, Gramona Imperial, starts at 50 months. And then they go up from there at 7-12 years for the Ill Lustros label and 15+ for the Colección de Arte.

You can book a wine tasting to try these mature sparklers. They also offer food and wine pairing experiences. And, for you equestrian enthusiasts, even the option to go horseback riding in their vineyards.

4. Solà Raventós

If you’re planning to visit Gramona, you couldn’t be any closer to Solà Raventós . Located right next door, this small family-run winery was founded in 1898.

Pere and his wife have been at the helm since 1987. And their son Guifré is now helping.

This is a super limited production, with just 20,000 bottles per year. So, these wines are hard to get outside of the area.

They age their Cavas between two to five years. And have a selection of both white and rosé Reservas and Gran Reservas.

You can sample the full range of their excellent wines along with local snacks in a 1-hour tasting. Or book a 2-hour visit that includes a tour of the cellars as well.

5. Freixenet

Freixenet winery building

If you’ve ever seen the famous frosted-black-glass Cordon Negro bottle in the Cava section at your local store, you’re probably familiar with the name Freixenet (pronounced fresh-eh-net).

This mega-winery is one of the largest sparkling wine producers in the world, selling more than 100 million bottles in 2021. And they make 80% of Spain’s exported Cava.

While I wouldn’t say you should visit Freixenet for the best that Cava has to offer, I thought it was interesting to see how production is done on a larger scale. Plus, it’s right at the train station, so if you’re pressed for time, you can’t get any closer.

Freixenet was founded in 1914 when two Spanish winemaking families joined through marriage. Pedro Ferrer and Dolores Sala Vive got hitched and decided to turn the family business from still to sparkling wine production.

Over the years, the winery expanded internationally. Today, they work with 200 growing partners that supply the base wine for their bubbly. And the wines are sold in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Freixenet cava bottles in wine cellar

Visits start with a video of the winery’s history. And a look back on some of their well-known ads, such as the iconic boy in a red hat holding a bottle of Freixenet.

Next, visit the old part of the winery to see the cellars and learn about the original winemaking process that was used used. Then, tour the current production facility (or factory might be a better word for it!). You’ll end at the tasting room to sample a variety of their most popular Cavas.

Where to Stay for Visiting Cava Wineries

If you plan to visit a Cava winery in Spain, there’s no better place to base yourself than Barcelona. This bucket-list destination is known for its stunning architecture, beautiful beaches, and tasty tapas.

The H10 Madison Hotel is a great 4-star option with a pool, terrace, restaurant, and bar. It’s right in the heart of the city close to all the top sites. And it’s a 5-minute walk to the train station you’ll take to get to Sant Sadurní d’Anoia.

FAQs About Visiting Cava Wineries in Spain

What is cava.

Cava is Spanish sparkling wine that comes from the Cava D.O. (Denominación de Origen).

Macabeu, Xarel·lo, and Parellada are the traditional grape varieties used for Cava production. But you’ll also find Garnacha, Monastrell, Trepat, and Subirat Parent. Plus, some producers are slipping in French Champagne varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Like Champagne, Cava is made in the traditional method (aka méthode champenoise) where the secondary fermentation happens in the bottle. But the warmer climate means it usually has lower acidity.

And basic Cavas are not aged as long as their French cousins. But look for Reserva, Gran Reserva, and Paraje Calificado for sparklers with more time in the bottle.

Check out more alternatives to Champagne and learn about Spanish white wines .

What’s the difference between Cava and Corpinnat?

A group of Cava producers felt many had become too focused on high-volume production and the wines lacked a sense of place. So in 2015, they formed the Corpinnat brand and committed to stricter winemaking practices.

These wines must be made with mostly estate-grown indigenous grapes that are hand harvested. And they have to be aged for at least 18 months.

In 2019, Corpinnat producers were forced to leave the Cava D.O. But they are some of the best quality wines coming out of this region. So, it’s worth seeking them out and visiting!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cava Wineries?

Weather-wise, spring and fall are the best times to visit Cava wineries in Spain. Summer months can be hot and humid. So, visiting in March, April, May, October, or November is ideal.

If you’re okay with braving the crowds, Cava Week happens annually in mid-October. You’ll get to witness the “Cava Queen” be crowned and take the first sips of the year’s harvest. Plus, there are dinners, concerts, classes, and of course, plenty of Cava!

How Many Cava Wineries are Near Barcelona?

The town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia is home to more than 80 Cava producers. And there are 200+ in the entire Penedès region. This region is also known for producing some of the best non-sparkling Catalan wines.

How Much Are Cava Wine Tastings?

Cava wine tastings and tours are typically around €20 to €35. But some wineries offer extra experiences like private tours, vineyard visits, and food pairing experiences that cost much more. See my global guide if you’re wondering how much wine tasting is throughout the world .

Cava: Catalan Champagne

Everything you need to know about spain’s own sparkling wine.

Barcelona Life

What Is Cava?

Tasting Tours

Welcome to Cava country! On this page you’ll learn what qualifies as ‘Spanish Champagne’, as well as discovering the traditional bars where it is served in Barcelona, and a number of recommended tasting activities in the nearby Penedes wine region.

What is Cava?

Cava is Catalonia’s very own white (or pink) sparkling wine, made using the ‘Champagne method’ famously employed on the other side of the Pyrenees. It is a delicious – and much cheaper – version of its French cousin. Cava is extremely popular in Barcelona, and indeed the rest of Spain, thanks to the numerous vineyards in the region owned by top wine-makers such as Codorniu, Torres and Freixenet.

Cava was first produced in 1872 by Josep Raventós of the  Codorniu winery , who, after a reconnaissance mission to France, fell in love with Champagne and successfully copied its production method using Spanish grapes.

The essential process that makes a Cava what it is (and not a mere carbonated wine) is the secondary fermentation of the wine in the same bottle in which it is sold; the bubbles are formed naturally. This produces finer, more persistent bubbles than sparkling wines made by other methods, such as adding CO2 to a still wine.

Brut Force! 7 Different Types of Cava

Cava is produced with varying levels of dryness vs. sweetness, according to the amount of sugar used in the fermentation process. According to the Cava Producers Association the types are: brut nature , extra brut , brut , seco (dry), semiseco (semi-dry) and dulce (sweet). For connoisseurs, the drier the better.

Where is Cava Produced?

According to Spanish law, Cava can be produced in six wine regions in Spain and must be made according to the traditional Champagne method to qualify as the real deal. The most common grapes used in production are Macabeo, Parellada and Xarello, although Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Subirat can also be used to make a fine sparkling wine.

Ninety nine percent of Cava is made in  the Penedes region of Catalonia , just outside  Barcelona .

Xampanyerias (Champagne Bars)

Barcelona’s small handful of  Xampanyerias  (the word is simply Catalan for Champagne bar/Cava bar) are much-loved institutions, adored by the locals who flock to these, usually homely, dens to stand cheek-by-jowl and munch on tapas in between glasses of the good stuff. Typically the Cava is served up as a complement to relatively cheap  bocadillos  (sandwiches) and  tapas dishes which patrons are required to order if they want to be served drinks too.

The atmosphere is often a feeding frenzy and a far cry from a civilised sit down meal – or quiet drink – however a visit to a Xampanyeria is strongly recommended for anyone who wants to sample these typical Barcelona joints and see the Catalans in their natural environment… everyone from old men in ill-fitting suits to boys in beach wear and senoritas in elegant cocktail dresses are partial to a Cava-flowing standing supper!

3. La Vinya del Senyor

Locations don’t get much better than a spot in the shade of  the iconic Santa Maria del Mar church in El Borne , and so life at this little wine bar gets off to a good start. But it’s not just the scenery that’s great… there’s a fantastic selection of the fruits of Dionysus – and not just the sparkling stuff. Oenophiles can also sample some of the great reds and roses made in the nearby regions of Penedes and Priorat. Good nibbles too. It is a trifle touristic, but hey sometimes the holiday atmosphere of travellers indulging themselves is nice to be around. Address: Placa Santa Maria 5

Freixenet & Recaredo: Catalunya’s Cava Country Beckons

The Spanish wine landscape is so much more than sangria and red wine from Rioja. From fresh and fruity whites to big and bold reds, you can find any style of wine you’re interested in drinking. Cava is one of the best-kept secrets of Spain though. The profile of Cava wineries is rising in the international market and you can usually find it abroad, traditionally marketed as a sparkling wine, perfect as a substitute for Champagne or Prosecco. And this is true! Cava is amazing value for money because it has the same level of quality, complexity, and deliciousness that Champagne is famous for, at prices that are often half the cost of Champagne.

Cava and the Penedès Region

Barcelona is the dream city for fans of bubbles. It’s conveniently located in the middle of Cava country. Only about 45 km east of the city sits the village of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the epicenter of cava production in the Penedès, the largest Cava producing area in Spain. One can only assume this is the reason Cava is abundant in Barcelona. I still get a little thrill ordering a “copa de Cava” on a regular evening, and not just saved for New Year’s and special occasions.

While you can never go wrong with any glass of Cava, knowing a little bit about it will increase the chance that you can find quality Cava and end up with a glass that you like. Just like Champagne, Cava has different taste profiles that are influenced by many factors. Age is the most straightforward factor.

If you want a party in a glass, choose a younger Cava. They generally are fresher, with zesty citrus notes and more intense bubbles. It’s also an excellent aperitif. As a Cava ages, it will develop more complex flavors, often described as toasty or nutty. The bubbles will soften and become less intense. Older Cavas get closer to what we expect from vintage Champagne.

To tell how long a Cava was aged, start by looking at the label on the bottle. A basic Cava will be aged for a minimum of nine months. A bottle labeled “Reserva” means the Cava will have been aged for at least fifteen months and a “Gran Reserva” for 30 months. Many producers continue to age their cavas for much longer than that based on the ultimate taste profile desired. Two other important terms to look for these days are “Corpinnat” and “Cava Paraje Calificado”. The terms indicate even more stringent requirements that dictate the winemaking process, including where grapes must be grown. These label terms are a good start if you are seeking out a higher quality wine to try.

A day trip to the Penedès region is the perfect way to expand your knowledge and take advantage of Barcelona’s prime location. Begin with Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, the original home of Cava, to learn about how this special wine is made and how the difference in producer philosophy influences the final product. This lovely Catalan town is home to several of the biggest names in Cava and Corpinnat and makes for the perfect starting point to see firsthand how Cava is made. Many bodegas have reopened with extensive safety measures in place and are ready to welcome guests. Sant Sadurni d’Anoia can be easily reached by train for a Cava adventure

Freixenet Cava

Even better, right next to the train station (and the first thing you see) is Freixenet . Perhaps one of the oldest and most well-known Cava producers in the world, Freixenet makes over 100 million bottles of Cava per year and distributes them widely. A visit to Freixenet offers a peek into this large scale operation as well a bit of time travel to the past. A private tour through the cellars of Freixenet is more like visiting a museum than a winery. The original facilities have been transformed to a display of the bottles, advertisements and machines originally used for winemaking at Freixenet. The history and nostalgia surround you as you walk through the cool tunnels. (Unfortunately, the usual fun small train ride through the modern production space is cancelled due to health and safety measures.) The tour ends the way every good winery visit should — with a tasting of two glasses of Cava on the scenic terrace with more options by the glass, if you want to explore some special bottlings that you can only find at the winery.

Recaredo Cava

Take a quick fifteen minute walk from Freixenet to neighboring Recaredo . Another institution of the Penedès, Recaredo began in 1924 and has led the charge over the last decade in improving the quality of Cava production in the region. A guided visit to Recaredo will show you a very different side of the industry. A much smaller operation, Recaredo is more of a living museum. The family still manages the entire winemaking process by hand, a true step back in time that’s evident winding through the cellar and seeing the history and tradition still proudly on display.

Recaredo is one of the founding bodegas of a new organization governing wine production in Catalunya, Corpinnat. The focus of these tours is the philosophy behind the organization and what that means for winemaking and viticulture in bodegas like Recaredo. All visits are organized for private groups at the moment, which is perfect for asking questions. The tour ends in the private tasting rooms where a flight of sparkling and still wines waits to showcase the experience and range that Recaredo offers. If you are lucky you might even meet Antonio, one of the second generation of Recaredo winemakers. Though retired, he is often around, keeping an eye on things and pointing out pictures of himself as a child in the cellars.

A visit to both Cava wineries offers the valuable opportunity to see and taste Cava from both ends of the spectrum and see how diverse this sparkling wine can be.

Next time you are looking for a special celebratory bottle, look for one of these at your local bodega or wine shop:

  • Recaredo Terrers Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2016, 25€
  • Recaredo Brut de Brut Serral del Vell 2013, 40 €
  • Raventós i Blanc de Nit 2017, 18 €
  • Huguet Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2010, 16€
  • Agustí Torelló Mata Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2013 17 €

Can Paixano (La Xampanyeria)

Can Paixano , also known as La Xampanyeria (the Champagne bar) to the Catalans, is a beloved tapas and cava bar located on a small side street in the seaside district of Barceloneta. It is renowned for its animated and buoyant ambience, and for being one of the best places in the city to get a taste of some traditional cava.

The bar offers various types of cava and local wines at an incredibly modest price, ranging from 95 cents to 1.40 euros for a glass. A delicious range of food is also available, from bocadillos (sandwiches) to tapas. The bocadillos can be created with a stunning choice of fillings, whether its sausages, cheese, Serano ham, pork from the grill, and more.

A standing-only bar with no tables, the venue is typically packed– so if crowds and cava tickle your fancy then this is certainly the spot for you. The bar is open from Monday to Saturday at 09:00-22:30.

Can’t get enough of their cava? Simply buy it onsite or arrange to get it delivered to your hotel.

El Xampanyet

Named after the Catalan word for sparkling wine, El Xampanyet is a long-standing traditional bodega situated just a stone’s throw away from the Picasso Museum.

If you’re looking for a place to sample the delights of cava, El Xampanyet offers an extensive variety of cavas served by the glass or bottle. The Barcelonese tend to pack the venue out on the weekends, where they kickstart the night with some bubbles and tapas before heading out to the clubs. The bar is open from Tuesday - Saturday.

La Vinya del Senyor

One of the most beautiful locations in the Gothic quarter, La Vinya del Senyor, is situated on the square facing the iconic Gothic church, Santa Maria del Mar. Inside, the bar is relatively small, yet its gorgeous terrace makes it the perfect spot to soak up the Barcelona sunshine over a glass of fizz.

This wine and tapas bar offers bubbly well worth imbibing, with its lengthy wine and cava list focusing on the good stuff rather than the cheap. If the fizz and views aren’t already enough, La Vinya del Senyor also have a delicious selection of traditional tapas and nibbles on offer.

El Rincon de Cava

Wanting to keep your cava experience cheap and cheerful? At El Rincon de Cava , glasses of the Catalan bubbly are available for under one euro a glass, with bottles priced at approximately 4 euros.

They also serve a good range of tapas, including salami, cheese and patatas bravas (a potato dish native to Spain), with plenty more to choose from. This authentic neighbourhood bar is located in Barcelona’s Poble Nou district and is open Monday – Saturday.

Codorniu  is a cava tour that offers visitors arguably the most unique experience that trumps any other cellar tour. Codorinu is steeped in history, with its family-run wine business dating back to the 16th century. In 1872, Josep Raventos produced cava for the first time in Spain, forming an entirely new industry in the Alt Pendes region, where 100,000 bottles of cava were being produced a year.

Today, Codorinu continues to put on a show that impresses both the locals and the tourists, offer a spectacular range of options for visitors to choose from. Not only is there a cava and wine tasting course available, but visitors also have the chance to tour the amazing underground tunnel system and dine with the wine-making family themselves.

The full-day tour costs around 150 euros per head, with private transfers to and from Barcelona included. This is a must-do tour if you’re looking for a more authentic and exclusive experience of cava.

This Catalonian winery is one of the largest wine producers in the Spanish region. Freixenet offers wine tasting visits and a train ride through the cellars, where visitors can sample cava and dig deep into its history.

Freixenet also caters for family tours, providing grape juice for children. The price for this experience is 12 euros for adults, 8.50 euros for children aged 9-17, and free entry for children under 8 years-old.

For those who are eager to extend their knowledge even further, food pairings are also available with a selection of chocolates and cheese.

Pares Balta

This family owned, traditional winery dates to 1790 and produces high quality wines and cavas. Much of their grapes come from the mountains of Penedès, with others coming from the estates that surround the vineyard.

Pares Balta  offers a unique experience:  visitors are introduced to the techniques of biodynamic farming, followed by a visit to the barrel room and cava cellar to discover the production processes and how the vineyard blends its wines. To top off the experience, mini snacks of fuet and manchego cheese are served with your samples of fizz.

Gramona  is renowned for its idyllic surroundings, and its continuing prestige rests on cavas. The company owns 70 hectares of vineyards and organically grows its vines, yet more recently began applying biodynamic techniques to top their cavas.

A tour of the Gramona winery includes tasting of the highest quality cavas and sparkling wines - which has received press recognition, with recommendations from the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

For something a little bit different, Recaredo offers a mesmerising tour. This small boutique winery produces all of its cavas by hand -  there are no machines, chemicals or fertilisers involved in the production process. A passionate guide will give you an insight into the cava-making process, with the tour finishing in a stunning tasting room.

Looking for a Barcelona hotel in the heart of the action? Hotel Barceló Raval is a cosmopolitan hotel ideally situated next to the Rambla del Raval with some of the city’s best restaurants, bars and shops on its doorstep.

Spanish sparkling: an exceptional tasting of top quality cava.

Cava, the Spanish sparkling wine, is close to the volume and vineyard surface of champagne. Champagne has 34,000 hectares and makes around 300 million bottles annually, while Cava has just over 38,000 hectares and makes around 250 million bottles. However, champagne has the upper hand in terms of prestige and price. There is nothing wrong with being affordable, which cava often is. But low prices do not bring prestige. So, Cava wants to get the message out there that they also make top quality. An exceptional tasting recently in Barcelona clearly showed that they do.

Although many consumers only know the entry level cava, often from the big houses, most cava producers, large and small, have both a cheaper and a more upscale segment (although some focus on one segment or the other). As always, when it comes to large wine regions, there is a bit of everything in cava country, and as a consumer, you choose according to your wallet, occasion, and mood. It almost always pays to opt out of the cheapest if you want a bit of character in your wine. This also applies to cava.

For the past few years, cava has been striving to carve its niche in the competitive world of sparkling wines. The focus is on showcasing the Spanish identity of cava and introducing consumers to the realm of high-quality cava. The term Cavas de Paraje Calificado, introduced in 2017, represents the pinnacle of this effort. It signifies a cava that originates from a specific vineyard, chosen for its location and terroir. The winery must own and meticulously maintain its 'paraje', and the quality of the vineyard is verified through soil analyses.

Netflix s Best New Show Arrives With A Perfect 100 Critic Score

Apple watch series 10 to boast welcome upgrade report claims, wwe raw results winners and grades on april 15 2024.

A Cavas de Paraje Calificado must be aged on the lees for at least 36 months. The harvest yield must not exceed 8000 kg/ha, which is quite low for sparkling wines. The harvest must be manual (some cava is harvested by machine, which is facilitated by the fact that the three main grapes are white, unlike Champagne, where two are red). In a cavas de paraje calificado, the three local grapes macabeo, xarel-lo and parellada as well as pinot noir and chardonnay are permitted.

By introducing the concept of Cava de Paraje Calificado, the region also wants to show the complexity that can be achieved with extended ageing. During the Cava Meeting in Barcelona end of November last year, I took part in a tasting of extraordinary cavas. The tasting showed some of the "paraje calificado" (although most are older than 2017, when the term was formally introduced) as well as cavas with long and sometimes very long ageing. It was, as you can imagine, a very enjoyable tasting featuring cavas from some of the top producers.

The Barcelona tasting of top Cava

Cava Pere Ventura Gran Vintage Paratge Calificat Can Bas 2015

The grapes are xarel-lo and macabeo, and the vines are very old, between 60 and 105 years. The Can Bas vineyard is on four hectares and surrounded by water and forest. It is cultivated organically, with low yields, 3,500 kg per hectare, and with minimum intervention in the cellar. The fermentation is with wild yeast. This is a full-bodied and creamy cava style with a lovely, fresh, and mouthwatering acidity and a taste of almonds, citrus and fruit ripeness. Elegant and complex is the overall impression.

Cava Alta Alella Mirgin Exeo Paraje Calificado Vallcirera 2017

The producer Alta Alella is in the opposite direction from Barcelona compared to most other cava producers. It is situated just 20 minutes’ drive from Barcelona, north along the coast, and just two kilometres from the sea. Even the narrow, long shape of the bottle—the traditional bottle here—differs from other cava. According to the owner family Pujol-Busquets, the saltiness of the sea leaves its mark on the wines.

The base wine is aged in French oak for three months before bottling. The grapes are 60% xarel-lo and 40% chardonnay. "Pinot noir and chardonnay make excellent cava, but we must be in tune with the market. It is now trendy with local grapes," says Mireia Pujol-Busquets. The wine has an excellent taste of orange peel, ripe stone fruit, and saltiness (yes, it is definitely there). It is fresh and dry with a lovely creamy mouthfeel; delicious

Cava Codorníu Ars Collecta Paraje El Trous Nou 2010

From a small winery within the big house of Codorníu. This is a 100% pinot noir from a vineyard with a cool location. The wine was disgorged in 2014. An exciting wine with aromas of ripe citrus and an unusually high acidity of 9 grams per litre. The dosage of 9 grams of sugar balances the wine, but it still has a crispness and steeliness that is quite remarkable. Very enjoyable.

Cava Codorníu Ars Collecta Paraje La Pleta 2013

This is a 100% chardonnay, and here, too, the acidity is high and fresh. It is tightly structured, with aromas of green apples and lemon. However, hints of maturity have begun to show themselves.

Cava Vins El Cep, Claror Paratje Qualificat Can Prats 2015

This light and elegant cava has aromas of white flowers, almonds, green apples, and a slight saltiness. It feels fresh and energetic, with character. The vineyard is in the northernmost part of Penedès.

Cava Juvé & Camps La Capella 2009 Brut Nature, Cava de Paraje Calificado

La Capella is a 7-hectare vineyard with well-drained clay and limestone soil, with southern exposure. Around the vineyard are olive trees and pine forests. The grape is 100% xarel-lo, the vines are old and pruned as gobelet. “We want to show the ageing of xarel-lo”, says Meritxell Juvé, CEO and 4 th generation of Juvé & Camps. And the grape does age splendidly. This is a fabulous cava with a mature, slightly burnt character, and is very expressive. There is a bit of honey caramel which softens the brut nature style. Delicious.

Cava Vins Familia Ferrer, José Ferrer Can Sala 2013

The Ferrer family founded Freixenet in 1914. Nowadays, the house is in the hands of Henkell Trocken in Germany. Familia Ferrer Can Sala, however, is still owned and run by the family. Here, we have 75% x-arello and 25% parellada (“but since then, we have switched to 50/50”, says CEO José Ferrer). It is full-bodied, quite intense, has a lovely mouthfeel, and is dry and fresh in the finish. The ripe aromas stay long on the palate.

Cava Vins Familia Ferrer Paraje Calificado Can Sala 2008

Very savoury with ripe yellow fruit, citrus, and nuts. Great complexity and flavours that linger for a long time.

Cava Vins Familia Ferrer, Vinyes de Can Sala 2015

100% parellada, which is unusual. It is pleasant, still young and energetic, complex with layers of flavours. Hints of ripe fruit, elegant with a crisp, fresh finish.

Cava Agustí Torelló Mata Kripta Gran Reserva 2011

This is a superb, exciting, and refreshing cava, with peach and honey on the nose and evolved toasty aromas of brioche on the palate with a bit of bitter almond in the aftertaste.

Cava Mestres Mas Via Gran Reserva Extra Brut 2003

Mestres is one of the oldest cava houses. The house only makes the higher category Cava de Guarda Superior Gran Reserva. Two of Mestres’ hallmarks are the ageing of the base wine in oak barrels and extended ageing on the lees. Right now, they are selling vintage 2006.

In 1945, Josep Mestres made his first sparkling wine without adding sugar, thus one of the first brut nature in history. His son, Antonio Mestres, now takes care of the business. He is, he says, a bit obsessed with gastronomic wines. He always thinks about gastronomy, so he has, of course, a significant focus on making cava that goes well with food.

This Gran Reserva 2003 was disgorged in 2018. It is an exceptional wine in an oxidative style. Dark in colour, it has a huge nose of honey, roasted coffee, and walnuts. It is a beautiful wine and very different from a young cava. Grapes are 75% x-arello and the rest macabeo and parellada.

Carbo-Capdevila 1975, cava, Catalonia, copyright BKWine Photography

Cava Blancher, Carbó Capdevila Reserva 1975

The oldest cava we tasted was made before Cava DOC even existed. The bubbles are slightly tired, but you can easily forgive that, as this is a magnificent wine. The colour is a beautiful amber, and the aroma is reminiscent of honey, walnuts, baked apples, and coffee—a treat.

Best Cava Wineries Near Barcelona – A Penedès Wine Region Road Trip

This post may contain paid links. If you make a purchase through links on our site, we may earn a commission.

The best Cava wineries near Barcelona are peppered around the Penedès wine region, just 50 kilometres southwest of the capital of Catalunya,  Spain. We get a taste of what makes Cava so special, and why the Spanish sparkling wine matches so well with food, on a road trip through the Cava producing region.

The best cava wineries near Barcelona , the capital of Catalunya, Spain , are in the Penedès wine region and can be visited by car, train, or on a guided tour. We explored the Penedès on a road trip with a small group of wine writers.

While they were there for the wine, we had a quest of our own. Not only did we want to get a taste of what makes Cava so special, we also wanted to find out if what the Catalan Cava makers we’d met on our previous trip had told us was true: that Cava matches so well with food, it goes with absolutely anything.

First some practical tips to getting to the Penedès wine region near Barcelona.

How to Visit the Penedes Wine Region from Barcelona

There are a few options for visiting the best Cava wineries near Barcelona: self-driving, taking the train or doing a wine tour from Barcelona.

You could rent a car from Barcelona airport or in Barcelona to drive to the Penedès wine region, about 40 minutes from Barcelona by car. One advantage of travelling by car is that you can load the boot up with cases of wine. Note that for most wineries it’s essential to email or call ahead to make appointments for vineyard tours and wine tastings.

You can also get to the Penedès wine region by train from the Renfe Station on Plaça Catalunya. The trains are ‘Renfe Cercanies’ and the best destination is Vilafranca del Penedès, the region’s liveliest town, on the Sant Viçens de Calderes line. The journey takes an hour and passes through Sant Sadurni d’Anoia. You could then hire a car or driver and vehicle locally

If you prefer not to take the train or drive (you’re going to be Cava tasting after all) you can tour the Penedès wine region with a guide. Try this Catalunya Wine, Tapas and Cava Tour from Barcelona or this Wine and Cava Tasting in Catalonia . Craving more Cava? Back in Barcelona you can sample more on this Tasting of Catalan and Spanish Wines .

Where to Stay to Visit the Best Cava Wineries

If you only have one day in the Penedès wine region, base yourselves in Barcelona. We love Hotel Omm  (265 Carrer Rosselló) near the Gràcia neighbourhood. Home to the Michelin-starred Roca Moo restaurant, it has a rooftop pool terrace overlooking Gaudí’s Casa Milà.

If you’re going to stay in the Penedès, try the  Hotel Mastinell  (34-93/115-6132), which has its own winery, a restaurant overlooking a Cava vineyard, and a spa offering wine treatments. It’s just outside Vilafranca del Penedès, the region’s main town.

Discovering the Best Cava Wineries Near Barcelona in the Penedès Wine Region

I am a woman on a mission. On our last trip to Barcelona we met a man and I fell in love – with Cava. The dashing gentleman in the dark suit and striped tie was Josep Elías Terns, owner-winemaker of Parato winery in the Penedès wine region, 50 kilometres southwest of Barcelona.

As Josep poured us glasses of the crisp, light, elegant Catalan sparkling wine that is to the Spanish what Champagne is to the French, he told us something I would never forget.

“Ferran Adrià said that Cava is the only wine that can match 25 dishes,” Josep pronounced with pride. “It’s like with music. Sometimes you want classical, sometimes you want rock, but then there is music that goes with everything.”

Josep’s revelation about the master of modern Catalan cuisine’s theory on Cava was music to my ears. I’d thought the Spanish sparkling wine was for quaffing at barbecues. Champagne was for toasting serious celebrations like weddings and anniversaries.

I would sip Cava in the sunshine on a summer’s afternoon but at a restaurant I would order Champagne. While Cava might serve as a cheeky aperitif and could easily cut through a rich dessert, I couldn’t envisage glasses of bubbles enduring a degustation menu. Or so I thought at the time.

A Penedès Wine Region Road Trip

Four years later, and Terence and I were on a plane to Spain and then a train trundling through the Catalan capital’s lacklustre suburbs toward Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, the gateway to the Penedès wine region to visit the best Cava wineries near Barcelona.

We were on our way to meet some wine writers to test the theory out over five days of tasting the best Spanish Cavas on a Penedès wine region road trip – tastings that we were assured would be accompanied by the breadth of dishes from the Catalan region’s renowned gastronomy.

Soon after the red brick apartment buildings with green canvas awnings gave way to red-roofed farmhouses and gently undulating hills planted with ancient vines, our train was pulling into the station opposite the Cava house, Freixenet.

Freixenet famously introduced Spanish Cava to the world in the 1980s. While the familiar black bottle was credited with making Cava the number one imported sparkling in the world, over the course of our trip we’d hear time and again that “it’s not really Cava”.

Our new friend Oriol Ripoll, director of Decántalo, an online Cava retailer and distributor, sells some 200 Cavas although he claims the Consejo Regulador del Cava, the Cava Regulatory Board has 246 registered.

Some 56 Cavas on a 50 Great Cava list compiled by Penedès-based wine marketing company Wine Pleasures have received gold and silver awards, but Freixenet does not have a sparkling on the list. I ask Oriol what distinguishes a great Cava?

“A good expression of terroir above all,” Oriol believes. “The wine should have fled all preconceived ideas of Cava, as it should have decades of personality from the winery and should be rich in variety… there are differences in latitude, geography, weather, and grape varieties used, so there are great differences between the wines.”

Best Penedès Wine Region Cava Wineries

Adernats wine cooperative.

At our first stop, the Adernats wine co-operative at the Vinícola de Nulles, a short drive from the village of Nulles, we soon learn about the terroir . Standing on a gravelly, sloped track, surveying the vineyards, a salty sea breeze wafts over the vines and caresses my cheek.

The setting isn’t picturesque in the way that the pretty northeast of France is where Champagne’s grapes grow in neat rows, surrounded by manicured lawns and lines of perfectly pruned hedges.

Here the craggy vines twist down hills and into rocky gullies. Scrubby bushes and wild herbs encroach, as do groves of walnut and olive trees. I scramble over a stony clay track, kicking sizeable pieces of slate and limestone pebbles from my path.

I spot the jagged blue ridges of the mountain range of Montserrat, which I will see all week, watching over us wherever we go. The Penedès has that wild rugged beauty of the Mediterranean – along with its flavours and fragrances. The air is perfumed with the scents of pine, thyme and rosemary. I will smell, taste and sense all of this in each Cava I sip.

My first chance to test out the El Bulli chef’s theory follows soon after dinner, held high in the vaulted ceiling of the Modernist winery, built in 1920, and cathedral-like in design. Andernats holds these candle-lit dinners for the public monthly.

Of the Cavas, and wines made from Xarel·lo, Macabeu and Parellada, the three native grapes traditionally used to make Cava, the best pairing for me is the starter: the Catalan summer soup of tomato and watermelon gazpacho with marinated fresh anchovies that we sip with Andernat’s aromatic Essencia Cava.

The next morning, in the village of Puigdàlber, we amble to a misty hilltop vineyard before settling around an antique table in the cavernous dining room of the sandstone farmhouse at Mas Codina to sample their Cavas.

Here we breakfast on a range of bubblies with Catalan cold cuts and cheeses, but it’s the heady Gran Reserva Brut Nature, aged 42 months in the cellar, that best holds up to the rich creamy goats cheese from the Pyrenees foothills, the sweet, oily melt-in-your-mouth Jamon Ibérico , and a spicy chorizo sausage that is too pungent for a Champagne.

Llopart Winery

Lunch is at the family-owned Llopart winery, established in Subirats in 1887, where the lovely Jeci Llopart greets us outside the sleek contemporary tasting rooms with glasses of their crimson Rosé Brut Reserva. A fifth-generation winemaker Jeci runs Llopart with her three siblings. I first met Jeci on that Barcelona trip four years ago when I fell hard for Cava.

After trying the gamut of Cava grape varietals, which we carefully pluck straight from the vine, we hike up the hill to the original old family farmhouse, where we savour sweeping vistas of the Penedès valley and majestic Montserrat.

We climb down into the dank cellars that lie deep beneath the vineyards and make our way back through the bottling area to the tasting room. Here, an expansive spread of traditional, regional dishes and contemporary tapas has been laid out to accompany our Cava tasting.

Jesi guides us through pairings, starting with three rustic classics:  pan com tomate y Jamon  (toast rubbed with fresh tomato and a slice of Jamon Ibérico ); coca de seats y butifarra , the Catalan take on pizza, with forest mushrooms and the beloved Catalan sausage that dates to Roman times; and plates of escalibada , smoky grilled vegetables drowned in virgin olive oil. Everything is local and it works wonderfully with the Cava.

As Jesi pours the last drops of a well-structured, creamy Imperial Gran Reserva Brut into my glass I recall what she told us in Barcelona four years earlier: “It’s the fruitiness and freshness that really makes Cava special… and its flexibility.”

“I love Cava because you can have it at anytime, winter or summer, with or without food,” she says, opening a bottle of Leopardi Gran Reserva Brut Nature, which she suggests having with the sausage. “The spicy notes match well with richer, heavier dishes.”

Cuscó Berga and Bohigas Wineries

Over the course of five days, we wash down an array of Catalan specialties with countless glasses of Cava. At Cuscó Berga winery there’s a humble peasant dish called  fideus , fine fried noodles with seafood that our hosts call Catalan paella, which they pile onto our plates.

Under the chandeliers in the sumptuous dining room of centuries-old Bohigas Winery, our grand feast begins with what the Catalans call a ‘pica-pica’ – sharing plates.

We savour sublime tuna tartare, plump scallops on creamy mashed potato, piping hot croquettes that melt in the mouth, and fried quails eggs with tasty trumpet mushrooms, followed by creamy risotto with the freshest of seasonal ceps, and fillets of freshly-caught turbot with potato confit.

Juvé y Camps

After a marathon-like tour of Juvé y Camps multi-storied cellars beneath Sant Sadurni d’Anoia – so large they could probably house the entire population – we indulge in another epic multi-course Michelin-star quality meal.

There are mountains of Jamon and cheese, salad, an escalibada with herring, duck cannelloni with foie bechamel and mushrooms, seafood stew with octopus, cod with spinach, chicken with pine nuts, and, finally, a decadent chocolate mouse with almonds.

Adrià would have approved. The Cava was well matched to every dish, from the fun Brut Rose through to the big Cava Gran Juvé that impressively paired with both the main and dessert.

Canals & Munné

It’s our final meal at the endearingly old-fashioned restaurant at Canals & Munné’s cellars in the centre of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia that best demonstrates the versatility of Cava that Jeci Llopart described.

Our hosts, the winemaker Oscar Canals and his charming export manager Natalia demonstrate the most quintessential of Catalan rituals, the calçotada – the act of barbecuing, peeling and eating the first of the season’s calçots – and teach us how to eat  calçots like the locals .

After dipping these enormous spring onions in Romesco sauce, we bend our heads back, open our mouths, and let the sweet, soft morsels slide along the tongue, before washing them down with a mouthful of Cava.

I could never imagine doing the same with Champagne.

As I wipe the sauce from my mouth with a very pedestrian paper napkin I recall what Josep Elías Terns told me excitedly four years ago: “When you go to Penedès and you drink the Cava, expect that you will really feel the place!”

Mission accomplished.

The wine and cava trail 01/04/2015

If anything defines Catalonia, it's its vineyards which not only shape its landscape but the very essence of its nature, traditions and historic legacy. Just a short distance from Barcelona, 30 minutes by road, you can immerse yourself in the counties of Alt Penedès , Anoia , Baix Llobregat , Baix Penedès and Garraf , which make up the Penedès region, which is famed around the world for its wines and cavas. There's no better way to understand the wine culture of Catalonia than to immerse yourself in this landscape situated between the Mediterranean coast and the pre-coastal mountain range. Covering an area of more than 27,542 hectares and with 153 wineries, there's no doubt that it is the land of wine and cava. Its wines, made with traditional local and French grape varieties, together with its ongoing research into new techniques, such as organic growing, experimenting with and mixing new varieties with different plant densities, put this region at the cutting edge of wine-production, not just in Catalonia but around the world. Wine and cava are such a serious business in the Penedès that they even have a museum devoted to them. The VINSEUM (Museu de la Cultura del Vi de Catalunya), is a place of pilgrimage for lovers of this drink that dates back many centuries. The locals talk about, drink and live wine with an infectious enthusiasm. So much so that many of the people who visit the region go home with the intention of making their own wine. If you've got a free morning, don't miss out on the opportunity to discover this nerve centre of Catalan culture. You can take the Catalunya Bus Turístic and explore it in an easy, convenient way. The ticket includes a guided tour, tasting and pairing at some of the most famous and prestigious wineries in the Penedès. You'll find out how the different varieties of wine and cava are made, learn how to tell them apart and, best of all, take part in guided tastings led by experts. The visitor experiences are available in different languages so you won't miss a single detail. You'll also be able to buy the wines and cavas you liked most directly from the winery. If you need further details or information about opening times and prices, you'll find them on the VisitBarcelona Tickets website. You'll also find other activities to discover the secret of wines. But don't forget to raise your glass and wish a long life to Catalan wine before you taste it: another tradition which has been going since wine-making began.
