Today is our final day in Dubai so we ventured out to Wild Wadi Water Park Dubai and Global Village Dubai for one final hooray 😀 Our recommended driver was Mohammed Shafique Malik and I couldn't be more pleased with having him as a driver. He was extremely polite, kind, helpful, knowledgeable and he made us feel safe every stop we made. He was on time for the three destinations we planned for today, which included taking us to Dubai Airport. We did not feel rushed and had his undivided attention for the entire day and three trips. Poor communication from the organisation Baisan tours nothing to do with language. We booked this tour 24hrs in advance. After contacting them the night before to confirm pick up we were told to stay at our hotel and they will arrive to pick us up between 9.30-10am. 10.15 I contacted them and was told to get a taxi to the Marina 5 minutes away! Our taxi ride was 30 minutes and extra cost for us. Of course we missed seeing the Marina and was squashed in 2 small seats with little leg room. The tour highlight was the frame of Dubai with tickets included. This we did not get to go to ( just photo) because of lack of time! We stopped at 3-4 beaches, which seemed like a waste of time. It was not what I expected at all. I feel like the tour missed the mark on what a sightseeing tour should be. I also thought Trip Advisor did a horrible job with communication. I had to reach out to them to find out the tour details. I feel like when you book something and pay your money someone should contact you to provide details such as pickup, etc. The best part of this tour was the Frame. Unfortunately, I had an issue with that as well. I was sent 2 barcodes via WhatsApp, but there were 3 people in my party. I asked the tour guide and he assured me I would be able to get in with what I had. But once again, that was not the case. We got there only to be told I needed 3 barcodes. I didn’t have Wi-Fi so I couldn’t contact anyone. I had to beg the guard at the Frame to let me in so I could get Wi-Fi so I could contact the guy to send me another barcode. After several minutes I was able to reach the guy who then sent me another barcode, no apology given for my inconvenience. I do not think this tour is worth the time or money. Approximately an hour before the pickup time, I WhatsApped Baisan to confirm the pickup -- and they told me that the tour is canceled and I should request my money back. No explanation. I then called their number, and was told the same thing (albeit the agent said that it would be refunded). Vacation time is scarce, and it is hard to book things last minute. If the tour had to be cancelled, some up-front warning (a few days before) would have been expected. Other tour providers I have used in the UAE, Rayna and Oberon, always contacted me the day before to confirm everything. Had I not called before, I would have been waiting in the hotel lobby for a pickup which was not going to happen. Baisan failed on this count. I would have given one star -- but they already informed Viator of the refund, which is in process -- so at least they are financially honest. Dubai floods: Chaos, queues and submerged cars after UAE hit by record rains

Passengers report being stranded in the desert city as the international hub struggles in the wake of unusually heavy rain

Don’t blame cloud seeding for the Dubai floods

Dubai is wrestling with the aftermath of extraordinary torrential rains that flooded the desert city, with people describing harrowing stories of spending the night in their cars, and air passengers enduring chaotic scenes at airports.

Up to 259.5mm (10.2in) of rain fell on the usually arid country of the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, the most since records began 75 years ago . The state-run WAM news agency called the rains on Tuesday “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949”.

As the sun returned on Wednesday, along with it came stories of people stuck in cars and offices through an arduous night.

“It was one of the most horrific situations I had ever experienced,” said one Dubai resident in his 30s, who did not want to give his name, after his 15-minute commute turned into a 12-hour ordeal on flooded roads.

At Dubai’s airport, one of the busiest for international travel, with nearly every flight repeatedly delayed, Emirates passengers were told to stay away “unless absolutely necessary”.

Frustration from those already there began to build.

A large crowd formed at a connections desk, clapping and whistling in protest as they waited for information.

“They are completely lost, it’s complete chaos – no information, nothing,” fumed one passenger, who did not want to be named, after a 12-hour wait, Agence France-Presse reported.

Standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. One couple called the situation “absolute carnage”. They spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely in a country with strict laws that criminalise critical speech. “You cannot get a taxi. There’s people sleeping in the Metro station. There’s people sleeping in the airport.”

The BBC reported other passengers were diverted to Dubai World Central Airport – also known as Al Maktoum airport – telling the broadcaster they had been “living on duty free” and that water was in short supply.

One furious British traveller told PA Media that once his flight was diverted to Dubai World Central, he had not been given any food or water either. “It’s just been an absolute disaster. We’re stuck here and seven hours without a single update is inexcusable.”

Emirates, Dubai’s flagship airline, posted on X on Wednesday night: “Customers should expect delays with departures and arrivals” and that while some passengers had been able to get to their destinations “we are aware that many are still waiting to get on flights”.

The airline cancelled all check-ins and announced that it would continue to suspend services until Thursday morning, apologising for the disruptions. Those on FlyDubai, Emirates’ low-cost sister airline, also faced delays.

Dubai airport posted on X early on Thursday that flights had resumed from Terminal 1 but urged people to travel to the airport only if they had a confirmed booking, as flights continued to be “delayed and disrupted”.

Paul Griffiths, the airport’s CEO, acknowledged the issues with flooding on Wednesday. “It remains an incredibly challenging time. In living memory, I don’t think anyone has ever seen conditions like it,” Griffiths told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye.

Neighbouring countries were also hit by heavy rains earlier this week, including Oman, where 20 people have died, including 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle with an adult.

Soldiers were deployed to badly affected areas of the sultanate, which rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian peninsula, to evacuate people trapped by flooding.

Schools will stay closed in Dubai until next week, authorities said, underscoring the difficulty of the clean-up.

In an unusual direct intervention, the UAE president, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ordered “authorities to quickly work on studying the condition of infrastructure throughout the UAE and to limit the damage caused”, official media said.

The president also gave orders for affected families to be transferred to safe locations, said a statement carried by the WAM news agency.

Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, wrote on X about “efforts being made by teams of citizens and residents that continue day and night” as the city’s media office posted video overlayed with dramatic music of officials conferring in groups and water pumping appearing to take place in the background.

Photos too were posted of what it said showed water flooding into desert areas.

Similar scenes were visible around the Gulf state including in Sharjah, in neighbouring Dubai, where people waded through main streets and paddled around on makeshift boats.

At least one person was killed in the flooding. A 70-year-old man who was swept away in his car in Ras al-Khaimah, one of the country’s seven emirates, according to police.

The UAE government announced that remote working for most federal government employees had been extended into another day because of the impact.

The number of luxury properties with a value of $10 million plus available for sale has dropped by more than half as more millionaires tend to make Dubai their home and fewer are willing to sell their assets.

“The laser-like focus of the global wealthy on Dubai is best reflected in the rapid drop in the volume of $10 million-plus homes for sale, which has fallen by 59 per cent across the city over the last 12 months to just 864 homes,” said Faisal Durrani, partner and head of research for Mena at Knight Frank.

In the post-pandemic period, there is more demand coming from the end-users and long-term investors for the Dubai property market on the back of confidence in the local economy and the government’s handling of Covid-19.

As reported by Khaleej Times earlier, flipping in the residential market is almost non-existent due to high demand from the end-users and long-term investors as well as conditions by top developers not to sell the property until 30 to 50 per cent of the amount is paid by the buyer.

Demand for luxury property continued unabated in 2024 as Dubai saw 105 homes priced over $10 million (Dh36.7 million) sold in the first three months of 2024, up 19 per cent when compared to the same quarter last year, property consultant Knight Frank said on Tuesday.

“The level of deal activity in Dubai continues to strengthen, particularly at the top end of the market, where the near-constant stream of international high-net-worth-individuals vying for the city’s most expensive homes persists,” said Durrani.

In 2023, Dubai recorded 431 home sales above $10 million, nearly 80 per cent higher than London (240) and New York (211), making them the top three most active luxury home markets in the world.

The total value of $10 million-plus homes sold during the first quarter stood at $1.73 billion, up 6 per cent year-on-year. The Palm Jumeirah registered deals worth $628 million, accounting for 36.3 per cent of sales by total value, followed by Jumeirah Bay Island and Dubai Hills Estate.

Palm Jumeirah (39) also led the pack in terms of the total number of luxury homes sold, followed by Palm Jebel Ali (10) and Business Bay (7).

Prices up 26.3%

Durrani said Dubai’s prime residential market has grown by 26.3 per cent over the last 12 months, easily making it one of, if not the fastest-growing prime residential market globally.

“While these startling growth rates are phenomenal, it doesn’t take away from the fact that Dubai’s luxury homes market remains one of the most affordable in the world. Indeed, US$ 1 million secures some 980 square feet of prime residential space in Dubai, compared to just 366 square feet in New York, 355 square feet in London, or 172 square feet in Monaco,” he said.

Will McKintosh, regional partner and head of prime residential for Mena at Knight Frank, said Dubai Hills Estate has quietly for some time been rising the ranks as not only one of Dubai’s most sought-after markets for domestic buyers, but now luxury home buyers are increasingly becoming active here too.

“The relative proximity to both Downtown and New Dubai, combined with access to international school, excellent neighbourhood facilities and amenities and of course its abundance of green space is quickly making Dubai Hills Estate one of Dubai’s most desirable neighbourhoods. Prices have unsurprisingly responded to the growing demand to live here and have risen by almost 11 per cent in the last 12 months, while the number of homes available for sale has fallen by 75 per cent to just over 1,000 units this past March,” said McKintosh.

Dubai’s Extraordinary Flooding: Here’s What to Know

Images of a saturated desert metropolis startled the world, prompting talk of cloud seeding, climate change and designing cities for intensified weather.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions have stunned the world this week. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a freak event — forecasters anticipated the storms several days out and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual. Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every corner of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this week’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets this week that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times on Thursday, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t immediately have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Heavy rains lash Middle East, disrupting flights in Dubai after killing 20 in region

Authorities and communities across the United Arab Emirates were clearing debris on Wednesday after heavy rain subsided late on Tuesday.

Dubai, the Middle East's financial centre, has been paralysed by torrential rain that has caused floods across the UAE and Bahrain, leaving 19 dead in Oman and at least one in the UAE.

Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest air hub for international passengers, diverted scores of incoming flights amid the flooding. DBX was expecting more than 100 flight arrivals on Tuesday evening.

But the airport announced a halt to arrivals before announcing a "gradual resumption" more than two hours later.

Videos on social media showed planes taxiing across an apron flooded with standing water.

Departure flights remained in operation during the evening but were plagued with delays and cancellations. Roads to the airport were also badly flooded.

Similar scenes were repeated across Dubai and elsewhere in the UAE as the oil-rich Gulf state, better known for its arid climate and intense summer heat, reeled from the storm.

Year's worth of rain in 24 hours

Flagship shopping centres Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates both suffered flooding.

Water was ankle-deep in at least one Dubai Metro station, according to images posted on social media.

Some roads collapsed, residential communities were hit by heavy flooding and many householders reported leaks from roofs, doors and windows.

Schools were shut across the UAE and were expected to remain closed on Wednesday, when further storms are forecast. Dubai's government also extended remote working for its employees into Wednesday.

Some inland areas of the UAE recorded more than 80 millimetres of rain over the 24 hours to 8am, approaching the annual average of about 100mm.

The National Center for Meteorology "urged residents to take all the precautions … and to stay away from areas of flooding and water accumulation".

The Asian Champions League football semifinal between the UAE's Al Ain and Saudi side Al Hilal, due to be hosted in Al Ain, was postponed for 24 hours because of the weather.

Climate-fuelled flooding

Bahrain, to the UAE's north-west, was also hit by heavy rain and flooding after being pummelled by thunder and lightning overnight.

"I like to play in the rain but for the first time it scares me," said nine-year-old Ali Hassan, as he helped his mother clear water from outside their house in Bahrain's capital, Manama.

The storms descended on the UAE, Bahrain and parts of Qatar after hitting Oman, where they caused deadly floods and left dozens stranded.

A child's body was recovered on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 18 with two people missing, emergency authorities told the official Oman News Agency.

Nine schoolchildren and three adults died when their vehicles were swept away in flash floods, the news agency reported on Sunday.

Both Oman and the UAE, which hosted last year's COP28 UN climate talks, have previously warned that global warming is likely to lead to more flooding.

Friederike Otto, a leader in the field of assessing the role of climate change on specific extreme weather events, said it was likely that global warming played a part in this week's rain.

"It is highly likely that the deadly and destructive rain in Oman and Dubai was made heavier by human-caused climate change," said Ms Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London.

Dubai: A Croatian and an Indian have been announced as the new dollar millionaires at the latest Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire and Finest Surprise draw, held on Friday at Concourse A of Dubai International Airport.

Zlakto Plenkovic, a 44-year-old yacht captain from Split, Croatia became a US$1 million winner, in Millennium Millionaire Series 456 with ticket number 0203, which he purchased on 25 March online.

Plenkovic, is the first Croatian national to win the Millennium Millionaire promotion since it was launched in 1999. Speaking to Dubai Duty Free over the phone he commented: “What an amazing surprise from Dubai Duty Free, it feels like a dream come true! I’m elated to win this early with my first ever ticket”.

Online purchase

Joining Plenkovic as a fellow US dollar millionaire is Soham Dudeja, a 36-year-old Indian national who was announced as the winner of US$1 million in Millennium Millionaire Series 457 with ticket number 1115, which he purchased online on April 3.

Dudeja, an automotive sales executive living in Dubai, has been participating in the Millennium Millionaire promotion for the past 20 years.

“I am thrilled to have finally won after participating for a long time. Indeed, perseverance has paid off and I can’t wait to break this news to my family.” he said.

Luxury cars winners

Friday’s draw was conducted by Dubai Duty Free Chief Operating Officer, Ramesh Cidambi, Salah Tahlak, Joint COO, Michael Schmidt, SVP — Retail, Yousef al Khalid, VP — HR Service Delivery and Salim Ibrahim, Operations Manager.

Following the Millennium Millionaire draw, the Finest Surprise draw was conducted for one luxury car and three motorbikes.

Sayyad Gooraby Hamid, a 61-year-old Iranian national won a Mercedes Benz S500 (Selenite Grey Metallic) car with ticket number 1033 in the Finest Surprise Series 1875.

A businessman living in Nagoya, Japan, Hamid couldn’t believe his luck and commented: “I’m absolutely ecstatic! Winning a Mercedes Benz is a milestone I’ll never forget and I look forward to visiting Dubai to receive my brand new car!”

Meanwhile, Firoj Mulani, a 39-year-old Indian national based in Dubai won a BMW R 1250 RS (Blue/White/Red Metallic) motorbike with ticket number 1063 in the Finest Surprise Series 575, which he purchased on 23 March.

A first-time ticket buyer, Mulani was excited to receive the news of his win and commented: “I’m thrilled to have won with my first ever Finest Surprise ticket and grateful to Dubai Duty Free for such an incredible promotion!”

Muhamed Salih, a 36-year-old Indian national living in Sharjah won an Aprilia RSV4 Factory 1100 (Ultra Black) motorbike in the Finest Surprise Series 576 with ticket number 0632, which he purchased April 4.

Lastly, Jaefar Sareef, an Indian national based in the UAE won a BMW R 1250 GS Adventure (Black Storm Metallic) motorbike with ticket number 0941 in the Finest Surprise Series 577, which he purchased online on 12 April.

Both winners are currently uncontactable, but will no doubt be delighted to learn of their wins.
