Charleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, while Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War rang out, lies across the water.

Charleston, South Carolina

Description.

Superb colonial and antebellum architecture, ornate old gardens, narrow cobbled streets, a rich turbulent history, and Southern charm define Charleston, one of America's premier destinations. Located on a peninsula between the confluence of the Cooper and Ashley Rivers, the city was the first English settlement in South Carolina. The surrounding Low Country has proved a rich and fertile land, producing rice, cotton, indigo and lumber. The great planter and merchant families that rose from this bounty made Charleston a glittering center of wealth, power and culture. The city has long prized and preserved its heritage. As you stroll the city's cobbled streets, history is on display. The College of Charleston was founded in 1770. The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, built 1771, was the sight of a Southern "Boston Tea Party" in 1773. St. Michael's Episcopal Church, built 1752, is the oldest church building in the city-both George Washington and Robert E. Lee attended services there, sitting in Pew 41. And it was in Charleston Harbor, of course, that the first rounds were fired in America's tragic Civil War.

More about Charleston, South Carolina Points of Interest

During the American Civil War, this public park was used for artillery. Today it is a landmark known for its stately antebellum homes and the White Point Gardens.

In the early 1700s, pirates frequently plundered what was then known as "Charles Towne." One such infamous pirate was Blackbeard who was later killed in a battle with the Royal Navy. Charleston is home to Patriot's Point and the USS Yorktown and submarine Clamagore.

The Old Exchange is one of the most significant colonial buildings in the U.S. Beneath it lies the Provost Dungeon that was used by the British to detain their prisoners.

This coastal fortification in the Charleston harbor is best known as the site of the start of the American Civil War when the first shots were fired at the Battle of Fort Sumter.

This Neoclassical house was built by a wealthy merchant in 1808. It was sold to the state in 1955. Today it is a National Historic Landmark that serves as a museum.

This beautiful southern plantation features an ornate estate and 18th-century garden, complete with manicured beds, rice fields, swampland and bird-watching opportunities.

On one of America's oldest working plantations, watch live presentations on the history of the plantation, see exhibits about slavery or visit the Butterfly Pavilion.

This historic house was designed in the Adam style and completed in 1803. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Today, it is part of the Charleston Museum.

Charleston port statistics

On September 14, 2017, South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) signed with USACE (US Army Corps of Engineers) a USD 49 million contract for the "Charleston Harbor Deepening Project".

  • The contract was for entrance channel's dredging to max draft 54 ft (16,5 m). A second contract (USD 50 million) was signed for deepening port's main shipping channel (to max draft 54 ft / 16,5 m) allowing access to large container ships with max capacity 18,000 TEU-containers at Wando Welch Terminal.
  • In November 2018, USACE signed USD 41,4 million contract for Charleston Harbor Deepening Project (part of FY2019 Work Plan). Entrance Channel's dredging started in February 2018. The first two USACE contracts included federal funding USD 108 million. South Carolina state funding for the project was USD 350 million, including USD 50 million loan (2018).

In addition to the deepening project, Port Charleston started a major program for upgrading its terminal infrastructure and equipment.

  • The program included wharf strengthening and new equipment at Wando Welch Terminal (completed 2018) and constructing a new container terminal (Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal (completed in 2020).
  • The new cargo terminal added 700,000 TEUs (annual throughput capacity) and the capability for handling 19,000-TEU boxships.
  • The 3-berth terminal doubled SC Ports' current capacity by adding 2,4 million TEUs annual throughput capacity.
  • The new terminal's wharf has length 427 m (1400 ft) and accommodates 5x ship-to-shore cranes (China-made, arrived in September-October 2020) plus 25c rubber-tired gantry cranes). 2020 was the last year of a 6-year / USD 2 billion improvement plan that included Charleston Harbor's deepening and Wando Welch Terminal's modernization. Following these developments, SC Ports now can handle 4x 14K-TEU boxships simultaneously.

In FY2020 (fiscal year), for the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project were allocated USD 138 million. Dredging works (conducted by USACE) were completed in 2021 and resulted in max draft/water depth of 52 ft (16 m).

  • For September 2017, SCPA reported for Port Charleston a record container shipping month volume (10% increase over Sept 2016) handling a total of 179,856 TEUs. The handled breakbulk cargo was 65,269 tons (Sept volume), while Inland Port Greer (2013-opened South Carolina Inland Port) handled 10,648 rail moves in Sept 2017.
  • On October 30, 2017, SCPA approved a USD 69,5 million contract for purchasing 6x new ship-to-shore cranes to serve the port's new container terminal. The new cranes (by the Chinese manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries) arrived in 2019. Five cranes are with lift height 169 ft (51,5 m) and installed at the new Sr Terminal (inaugurated in 2020, annual capacity 628,000 TEUs). One crane (lift height 155 ft / 47 m) was delivered to Wando Welch Terminal. This is the port's busiest container terminal, which in August 2016 received its first 2 cranes (155 ft each). Two more cranes were delivered in February 2018.
  • As of 2020, Wando Welch Terminal has 9 (of planned 13) ship-to-shore cranes and pier capacity to handle two 14,000-TEU ships simultaneously.

For FY2019, South Carolina Ports Authority reported a record year with handled 2,44 million TEUs (5% increase over 2018) at both terminals (Wando Welch, North Charleston). Record numbers were reported for breakbulk cargoes (725,828 tons, 10% increase), vehicles (225,191, +4%), cruise tourists (262,776, ~24%), rail moves (190,539, +41%, at both Inland Ports / Greer and Dillon).

Since early-May 2020 is operational the Charleston Stevedoring Company LLC - a 3-party joint venture (Marine Terminals Corporation East, Ceres Marine Terminals, SSA Atlantic) that provides Port Charleston with container terminal and stevedoring services.

FY2021 (June 30, 2020-21) was SC Ports' strongest in terms of TEUs (2,55 million) handled at the three container terminals (Wando Welch, North Charleston, Hugh K. Leatherman), or 9,6% increase over FY2020.

  • At Columbus Street Terminal were handled 253,981 vehicles (+27%).
  • For both inland rail ports (Greer and Dillon) were reported 192,844 rail moves (+11,7%), including 157,842 (at Inland Port Greer/+12,6%) and 35,002 (Inland Port Dillon/+7,9%).
  • Curiously, the import trade boom was due to the COVID crisis as consumers' buying habits shifted - from travel and services to retail and home goods.
  • In June 2021 Port Charleston handled 128,622 TEUs (+44,5% over June 2020) and 23,096 vehicles (+60,7%).

For November 2021 SCPA handled the record 250,711 TEUs at its three container terminals (Wando Welch, North Charleston, Hugh K. Leatherman), representing a 21% increase over Nov 2020. The record-high volumes included 127,081 imported (+36%) and 67,639 exported (+5%).

2022 became the Port's record year by annual TEU container volumes - nearly 2,8 million , or 1,5% increase over 2021. The Port also served 261,636 cruise tourists and moved 199,343 vehicles (at Columbus Street Terminal). Both Inland Ports (Greer and Dillon) reported total 167,147 rail moves. In 2022 were allocated US$550 million for building a new cargo yard (Navy Base Intermodal Facility) and developing the facility's inner-harbor barge operations.

In FY2023, SC Ports handled ~1,8 million TEUs (-5% compared to FY2022) plus 978374 pier containers (of any size).

Charleston SC cruise terminal

Charleston cruise port terminal is located at the Union Pier, in the historic district of the city's downtown. It is easily accessible via Highway 17-North, Highway 17-South, and also Interstate 26. Charleston International Airport is at approx 20 min drive distance from the terminal.

The current cruise terminal building dates from 1973. The terminal facility is operated by SCPA-South Carolina Ports Authority. Long–term parking: at the terminal is available for cruise passenger vehicless only (price is USD 17 per day). Reservations for parking are not required.

(New) Union Pier Cruise Terminal (waterfront development project)

The plan for development of the Charleston cruise ship terminal includes construction of a new building. It will be located at the Union Pier's northern end. The old (southern end) part of the building will be redeveloped. The Ports Authority (SPA) will sell 0,15 km2 (0,06 ml2) Union Pier property for private development right after the completion of the new terminal. This premium waterfront area will be developed as a new neighborhood and will be of no maritime use. It will feature new streets, public parks, shops, residential homes and businesses, thus increasing the access to the waterfront.

The concept plan also includes relocating of all cargo shipping operations from Union Pier. It will serve only as cruise pier.

The new passenger terminal's construction will cost USD 35 million. Its opponents have sued in both state and federal courts. Public hearing was also called by the US Army Corps of Engineers after receiving a new federal permit for putting additional pilings beneath one of the old terminal's warehouses.

It looks like Charlestonians want the cruises, but don't want the new terminal to be located on the edge of the city's historic district. Among their major concerns are the air quality and traffic congestion. The cruise port will have to install electric ship-to-shore power to reduce air pollution by docked vessels.

(New) Luxury cruise ship anchorage since 2017

In January 2017, the city agreed to limit the per-year number of cruise vessels scheduled to dock in Port Charleston. However, it doesn't apply to Charleston Harbor.

  • Smaller and luxury cruise ships will be anchored close to Fort Sumter, from where their passengers will be transported via locally provided tender boats to Patriots Point. The area is known as "Commercial Anchorage A". It is located between Fort Sumter and Crab Bank, and could suit ships with smaller capacity (of hundreds and not thousands of passengers).
  • The passenger tendering service to the shore is provided by the local tour company "SpiritLine Cruises". The company has a fleet of 4 boats and serves its passengers from a dock at Patriots Point, where they board its vessels for harbor tour cruises.
  • Cruise ships to Charleston visiting the port as "port of call" cause fewer problems than the homeported here larger vessels, because their passengers don't have cars to park.

Mount Pleasant (South Carolina) cruise port

The port of Mount Pleasant SC emerged as a Charleston alternative cruise port and will receive its first ship call in May 2017. As Charleston SC self-imposed the 104-vessel limit per year (seasons 2017 and 2018), the Mount Pleasant port emerged as a nearby alternative for smaller-sized and luxury cruise vessels. After anchoring here, they will tender their passengers to Fort Sumter, from where is approx 30-min bus travel to downtown Charleston.

The first-ever ship that anchored in Mount Pleasant SC was Silversea 's superyacht Silver Whisper  (in 2004).

  • Fort Sumter: located in the Sullivan’s Island neighborhood. The place where on 12 April 1861 Confederate troops began the Civil War in America.
  • Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon: located in the Historic District neighborhood. It is on the waterfront at East Bay Street. The white building houses the museum of the Colonial-era history in Charleston.
  • Historic Churches: in the Historic District neighborhood you can visit the Circular Congregational, the French Huguenot Church and the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (the second oldest synagogue in America). Charleston is nicknamed as the “City of Churches.”
  • City Market: it is in the Historic District. Fun place to visit but try not to be tempted by all the goods there.
  • Gibbes Museum of Art: located in the Historic District. You can enjoy some of the finest art collections in the South.
  • South Carolina Aquarium: located in the French Quarter Neighborhood. Discover the amazing ocean life. Meet black tip shark, sandbar sharks, scalpel-tailed surgeonfish, loggerhead turtles and jellyfish.

Things to do in Charleston

Last updated on June 12th, 2023 at 02:26 pm

Experience the rich history and southern charm of Charleston through attractions like the Battery & White Point Gardens, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, Middleton Place, and exploring the historic district's cobblestone streets and stunning architecture.

Battery Park & White Point Garden

The Battery is possibly one of the foremost of icons of Charleston. Along the city’s southern shore are rows of Southern mansions overlooking the Harbor. White Point Gardens, located within The Battery ,has wonderful walking gorgeous paths through the park featuring plenty of fascinating relics and monuments from the Civil War.

Isle of Palms

If you’re looking for a beach getaway, the Isle of Palms , just outside of Charleston has 7 miles of wonderful beaches, with ideal water for a family swim or to do some windsurfing. There is no cost to access the beach, but you will pay a small fee for parking. If you’d rather spend a day golfing, the Isle of Palms offers two Tom Fazio-designed courses at the Wild Dunes Resort.

Drayton Hall

Visit one of the oldest plantations in the South, Drayton Hall , located just outside of Charleston. Built in 1738, you can explore the large red-brick home, preserved in its original state, stepping back in time to when the Drayton family owned it. “Authentic” is a word often used to describe it, as it is not renovated to show its glory during the height of the plantation (ie no air conditioning, heat or electricity). Buy tickets online now .

Aiken-Rhett House Museum

Like Drayton Hall, the Aiken-Rhett House has been preserved, not restored. Built in 1820, the home was owned by the family until 1975, when it was sold to the The Charleston Museum. Step back in time and see original wallpaper, antique furniture and original outbuildings where slaves would have lived and worked. Just a mile from downtown Charleston, admission includes a self-guided tour so you can enjoy the home at your own pace.

Charleston City Market

Often known as a “Slave Market,” it is here where slaves would come and make purchases for the plantations. Today, it is packed with 300 shops, cafes, and is especially known for the sweetgrass basket weavers who learned their craft from their ancestors, originating in West Africa. It is open everyday and weekend evenings from March to December.

Charleston Harbor Tour

We make learning the history of charleston fun.

Charleston is one of the most beautiful and iconic cities in the country let alone the south, but you have not gotten the full experience of Charleston if you only stay on land. Ask any local and they will tell you being on the water is a must, especially in the hot months, and also being out on the water is a major part of what living in the low country is all about.

History Tour Charleston

Charleston is a very historic place and taking a Charleston harbor tour is a great way to see a lot of the sites and much of the history can actually be found out on the water. What better way to discover more about Charleston than relaxing on your very own private yacht with a knowledgeable captain and crew.

Our Tours Are Informative But Not To The Point Of Exhaustion

Our tour guides are extremely knowledgeable about the history of Charleston especially as it relates to Charleston Harbor but at the same time realize that you are coming out on the water because you want to relax. Sometimes that means simply having a moment of silence and listening to nature or listening to your favorite song while you feel the cool ocean breeze and smell the fresh salt air. This is your day so Captain Dave and his crew are always happy to accommodate for your desires.

Your Day Your Way

Want to hear more history on your tour.

No problem. Let Captain Dave know you are a sponge for history and want to hear lots of stories on your tour.

Change your mind and want to hear your favorite song instead?

Just let Captain Dave know. We have a bluetooth enabled sound system.

Want to take in the sounds of nature?

Ask Captain Dave to take you to the best spot to relax.

Up Close on the Historical Sites

When touring Charleston by land most people head to waterfront park which is one of the crown jewels of our city. The pineapple fountain located in the park has been voted one of the top ten fountains in the U.S.!

charleston sc port tours

From there you can get some great views of the harbor, and of the Ravenel Bridge as well as Castle Pinckney in the foreground and a little further off in the distance Fort Sumpter. You can also see on many of the plaques in the park where everything is in the harbor. We actually bring you to those sites, right up close, and tell you about the history and what went on during the civil war and beyond. Its a much more interactive experience.

Some Fun Facts About Charleston

Did you know that on the lower peninsula no building can be higher than a church steeple.

You may not have noticed that as you can only really see that perspective from out on the water. Our harbor cruise takes you up close to all of the forts in the harbor including Fort Sumner and Fort Moultrie heading out of the harbor.

Did you know the first submarine, The Hunley, was launched in the harbor and sank a merchant ship, the Housatonic, a union ship right off the coast of Sullivan’s Island?

Well, really the sub was launched 3 times but you can ask Captain Dave more about that on the tour.

Special Features of Our Tour

Bathroom on board.

This may seem like a small thing but it is actually a pretty big deal. No one wants to be uncomfortable during the tour and this is especially important for families with young children. This is also a popular feature for our date night cruises, as well as our booze cruises, bachelorette parties, and bachelor parties. Really it comes in handy for the comfort of our guests on all our tours.

On the really hot days there is not much of a breeze blowing downtown. Most of the time simply riding around in the boat on the water is enough air conditioning but we do have the convienience of an air conditioned cabin to take a short break from the sun should the need arise. We find it much better to be out on the water with a breeze having a glass of wine or beer while taking in the sites. No walking around sweating and wondering when the march will be over. We have completely updated the boat so you can sit back relax and take in the sites in style.

There is so much to see on our harbor tours that I almost forgot about mentioning what our guests often say is their favorite part of the trip which is the wild life. When I say wild life I mean the dolphins. We have so many dolphins in the harbor. They are fun and playful and will usually come up to or close to the boat and hang out for a while. You have to watch for them as a lot of time our guests are having so much fun talking and hanging out with us that they simply forget to look. Don’t worry we are always on the look out for them as well as other sea creatures that pop up from time to time. Every tour is a dolphin tour with Carolina Marine Group. We also get sea turtles, manatees, sunfish, seagulls and pelicans.

Fun For The Whole Family

Little boy playing Captain

What Kid Doesn't Love Playing Captain?

Our trip is great for all ages including smaller ones. What kid doesn’t like going to the bridge and getting the chance to drive a big boat? They can with us! It’s a real life iPad game to keep them entertained while the adults can enjoy the yacht experience and take in the sites and relax. I promise this will be the best thing you do in Charleston! Just ask any of our guests and check our 5 star reviews on google .

Capt. Dave is HANDS DOWN the best Captain we've ever had! Not only does he know a TON about the history of Charleston, he's also super funny and makes the tour 100 times better than we could have imagined! We can't wait to come back and do another tour with Capt. Dave!

About Cruising to Charleston

I'm going back to Charleston, back where I belong. I want peace. I want to see if somewhere there isn't something left in life of charm and grace. --Rhett Butler, "Gone With the Wind"

The Holy City, Charleston, is so named for the skyline of steeples seen by ships' passengers as they enter Charleston harbor. The view was there before the American Revolution, during the Civil War, and you'll see the same today as your ship arrives or departs. Charleston has endured much over the centuries, but the city also has thrived and prospered. Pirates, wars, disease, hurricanes, earthquakes and, most frequently, fires have left their mark on the city and the region known as the Lowcountry, as have the unique individuals and personalities that have shaped the centuries there -- and left us the Charleston we know today.

Today's Charleston is a treasure trove, a unique blend of architecture and history, art and culture. Visit the Old Exchange Building, and see the history of the city and that of the port. Look at Rainbow Row to see how individual buildings have become part of a city landmark. Turn down any corner, and discover quiet alleys and cobbled streets where the past is always present. The air can be thick with scent -- tea olive, jessamine, magnolia; camellias and azaleas burst forth with color, each in their season. It's hard to get lost -- sooner or later, you'll end up at either the Ashley or Cooper River. Walk the Battery, with planters' mansions behind you, and gaze across the harbor at Fort Sumter, where the tragedy of the Civil War began. Stroll the neighborhoods, and begin to understand why Charlestonians are proud of what has been preserved and maintained. They're eager to share it and will go out of their way to help visitors, which explains why Charleston has been named the "Most Polite" city in America several years in a row.

Bring your camera, your appetite and a shopping bag. The city is overwhelmingly picturesque, and you'll find yourself stopping over and over for that perfect photo, that intriguing view. Dine well and often in this city where, in years gone by, residents ate only at home; now, the city is a foodie haven where dining out has become a never-ending adventure. The Saturday Farmers' Market is always crowded, and an annual Food & Wine Festival has been introduced. And, make sure to set yourself to shopping mode. National chains do exist, but it's what's local that really counts. The must-have items are handwoven sweetgrass baskets; they're expensive, yes, but you're buying centuries of tradition. Look for antiques, silver, jewelry and art of every kind. (No, it's not legally required to have an art gallery on every block ... it just seems that way.)

Take your time, and don't try to do everything; you'll be coming back.

The ship terminal is located in the heart of a colorful and historic city fit for strolling

Beware of "free tours" that are really bait for a timeshare talk

Southern charm is abundant among Charleston's polite and well-preserved neighborhoods

The city begins at the gangway. The Market stretches for blocks before you and is bordered north and south by a broad variety of shops, galleries and restaurants. It's here that the carriage tours begin and end, and beyond is the main shopping district. To your left lies the original Historic District, Charleston's heart; to your right is Ansonborough, Charleston's first suburb (1800).

Good to Know?

Watch out for young people trying to sell palmetto roses, made from the fronds of the local trees. Yes, they are cute and make nice souvenirs, but the sellers will remind you of Caribbean beach vendors. Practice the word "no." Also, there's no such thing as a flat sidewalk; public restrooms only exist in the Market, parking garages and near the waterfront park; and, oh yes, those "free tours" being offered at booths and storefronts are come-ons for timeshares.

Getting Around?

On Foot: It's very easy to explore Charleston on foot, given the intimate scale of the area. Check to see if your smartphone is GPS-enabled, or access the MapQuest application on your iPhone to guide yourself. You can shave time and distance from your on-foot explorations that way.

By Bus: For those who don't want to hoof it around town, public transit is available through CARTA, which operates both city buses and trolley-style shuttles. The cost for a trolley is free, and you can also purchase transfers between trolleys and buses to get wherever you need to go. Correct change is required; you can also pre-order single-day or three-day passes.

By Car: Taxis are at the terminal when a ship is in port. Yellow Cab will dispatch (843-577-6565), as will Max Transportation (843-822-1869) and Charleston Black Cab Company (843-216-2627). For cab rides to and from the Charleston airport (about $30 each way), try Grant's Limo-Taxi (843-813-1737). Rickshaw-pedicabs operate downtown, but mainly in the evening (Charleston Rickshaw, 843-723-5685). Rental cars are available downtown at Enterprise or Budget. Both companies are located opposite the Visitors' Center, about a mile or so from the port.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

U.S. dollars are used, and ATM's are readily available; credit cards may not be accepted by individual vendors in the Market or by the city's famed basket makers.

It's English, with a twist. Charlestonians speak in warm, languid voices that make a drawl seem fast, and African Americans of Gullah/Geechee descent still use the words of another time, softened by the centuries.

Where You're Docked?

Charleston Cruise Port Address: 32 Washington Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29401

The passenger terminal couldn't be more convenient; it's within strolling distance of everything. The facility itself isn't the most visually appealing, but plans to improve the area have been stalled in court for years by locals who argue that visiting cruise ships detract from the serenity of the city. Secure, patrolled parking is available for a per-day fee; an open public garage, about two to three blocks away, also offers daily parking.
