Are you a budget traveler who is looking for the cheapest places to travel in Europe? For some reason, many people associate Europe with high costs and the word “expensive.” When in reality, this continent has plenty of affordable destinations.

Winter in Europe is actually one of the best seasons to travel! Well, yes, for many reasons. There are fewer people, lower prices, it is easier to make bookings, and more places offer stress-free vacations . Over and above that, big cities and small villages look more like decorations from a movie. They are incredibly beautiful and the reason for that is not just Christmas lights.

Winter Europe is endlessly attractive to all types of travelers. On the one hand, it has a huge number of cultural monuments, history, and picturesque landscapes. On the other hand, traveling in Europe can get quite expensive.

Of course, even in expensive countries, you can travel on a tight budget. But if you want not only a cheap but comfortable vacation, then this list is for you!

The Cheapest Places to Visit in Europe in December

December is that time of the year when everyone wants to travel in Europe. Because it feels enchanting everywhere. Since this is the highest tourist season, prices are mega-inflated and hotels are fully booked.

But there are a few countries (popular in summer) that do not see many tourists in winter. And each of them makes a list of cheap places to travel in Europe in winter.

One of the lesser-visited countries in Europe Lithuania holds so much magic during the holiday season. And it is such a cheap winter getaway here.

Most of the country is normally covered in snow around Christmas except for the coast. Although in the cities temperatures don’t drop far below 0. December is a more gloomy month with snow on and off but you also get to see sunny days.

One of the big reasons people come to Lithuania in winter is Hot Springs. Did you know at all that Lithuania has thermal baths ? I talk about them in greater detail in my guide to Vilnius . They are open all year round, even during the cold winter days. The best places for that are Druskininkai , Birstonas , and Palanga Spa Towns . But check my guide for more tips.

Surprisingly, winter sports are becoming more and more popular too. The country doesn’t have any mountains but cross country skiing takes place every year. Snow season is a bit unpredictable in Lithuania but there are some weeks when the country is covered in snow and up in the hills the temperature can drop to -20C degrees. So pack warm clothes!

There are a few great places you can choose from to ski. Like Druskininkai Resort Town and Anyksciai . The last one is the largest ski resort in Lithuania.

If you like hiking, you absolutely have to visit Aukstaitija National Park . It offers many different paths through the woods for orienteering, nature walks and rest.

Georgia. Definitely, you didn’t think about this teeny-tiny country as one of the cheapest places to travel in Europe. And travel in winter. We lived in Tbilisi and would definitely return there again during December.

Georgia is a fantastic destination for budget travelers (and not only budget!) where you can have various experiences during one trip. From wine tasting, Kazbegi adventures , incredible road trips to sunbathing to skiing, Christmas markets, and cave explorations.

Winters in the capital of Georgia are soft. The temperature hardly goes below 0 degrees. And the city always gets beautifully decorated for the holidays. There are fewer tourists but all the shops and restaurants stay open so you can still enjoy amazing Georgian wine and cuisine. And to be honest, Tbilisi has some of the best restaurants and bars  in Europe. You can be very busy only hopping from one place to another.

On the coast, winters are much softer. Anywhere between Batumi and Ureki , you can easily have +10C degrees or even higher during the day which allows you to get vitamin D and traverse two coastal regions.

Come to visit Montenegro  in December! So many tourists visit Montenegro in summer, not knowing how spectacular this country is in winter. We lived in Montenegro too and I want to encourage you guys, looking for affordable European vacations, come to Montenegro at the beginning of winter season.

It’s going to be cheap, quiet and full of surprises. Also, December is the time of oranges, tangerines, persimmons, and kiwis.

The climate in different parts of Montenegro can vary greatly. On the coast it gets warm and in the north people ski. Since the country is very small, you can be skiing in the mountains and soaking up the sun on the coast during the same day.

Usually, the average December air temperature along the coast is +15 +17C degrees, but on many days it can be +20+22. Nights are much cooler and you may need a heater. But days, for the most part, see the gentle sun and calm sea. In the north, the average daily temperature ranges from -8 to +5 degrees which creates perfect conditions for skiing, snowboarding, and snow-related activities.

Despite the small size of the country, Montenegro has three climatic zones – coastal, northern and central. In the central part of Montenegro (Podgorica, Niksic, Cetinje) there is nothing to do in winter but the coastal part of the country and the north offer a lot of activities.

My best advice – choose to have Montenegro vacation on the coast if you plan to take excursions and see the historical part of the country. If you are interested in skiing then there are two well-known ski resorts to look into – Zabljak and Kolasin . There are several smaller ski resorts but with the poorly developed infrastructure, they are not worth your time. We personally visited Zabljak multiple times during different seasons and it was spectacular.

Overall, Cyprus is not considered a really cheap destination. But that changes once winter comes. Holidays in Cyprus are the cheapest in winter, especially if you are making reservations at the last minute.

In the second part of November at the end of the season, prices for rental cars and accommodation drastically fall what turns it into an excellent destination for budget travelers.

Yes, you won’t be able to swim in the sea but there is so much to do beyond the beach. Go on a scenic hike or walk with panoramic views , rent a car in one of many cities and go road tripping , visit a winery , one of the oldest villages , or spend a day in a spa that Cyprus is famous for.

Also do not forget that Cyprus is divided into two countries and if you go to the Turkish part of the island, your vacation will be much cheaper than in Turkey and at the same time cheaper than in South Cyprus. At the same time, you can safely go on excursions around the island, but in the end of the day return to your hotel. North Cyprus has quite a few chick all-inclusive hotels to stay in.

The country does not have tall mountains, yet winter sports are very popular. There are plenty of hills with well-built ski tracks. The most famous one is in Otepää . Besides that, many ice skating rinks open up all over the country.

A small northern baltic country brings more and more tourists every year but not so much in winter. That’s why many tour operators and hotels lower their prices. The best time for budget visits is late fall, early winter, the second half of winter, and early spring. But December is just so magical.

Cheap And Cool Places to Visit in Europe in February

There are actually so many places in Europe where you can go in February. Those cheap winter getaways I am going to mention below have mild winters and are easy to reach. In addition, February is usually the most unpopular month among tourists, so you can be sure that your experience will be very authentic.

Turkey is a great place for someone who’s looking for a very soft and sunny winter on a budget . Although some people will say that the winter months are fairly cold in Turkey , in my experience they are still much warmer than in most of the countries on the continent.

There can be enough sunny days when it gets warm enough to hang out on the beach and even sunbathe. The average temperature in February is 12-15C degrees but some days can be warmer. The water is too cold to swim, but this time of the year is the best for sightseeing, nature walks and visiting Turkish villages (like this cute Sirince village not far from Izmir ). It is definitely the quietest time to visit Turkey.

Considering it’s an offseason, expect accommodation and cafes to be cheaper than normally. Also, Turks don’t seem to bargain as much (shopping lovers, this is the time to go.) You can also check the last minute travel packages, which often include all-inclusive deals, if you prefer it that way.

And if you get tired of quiet beaches , visit caves or the mountains that offer skiing, snowboarding , and other snowy activities . Car rentals are also much cheaper.

And of course Istanbul . There are so many incredible sightseeing spots , places where to eat , and always lots of things to do in this vibrant city. Istanbul neighborhoods have so much that you can stay busy for a long time. And in the winter season, Istanbul can turn into a wonderland.

Serbia is another country that makes a list of the cheapest places to travel in Europe. It is a quite popular destination for winter travelers but mainly because of the secret mountains  and ski resorts. They make a great budget alternative to European resorts while holding up the good quality for slopes and accommodation. There plenty of resorts to choose from but the most known are Kopaonik Ski Resort and Stara Planina Resort .

The Kopaonik Ski Resort is probably the most famous, largest and modern place for skiing. There you would find 25 Sky Lifts and more than 60 km of ski tracks including tracks for night skiing. There are a lot of budget options for accommodation starting from $30 per night and up to luxury apartments. 

Stara Planina Resort is a new but very modern and quickly developing resort with great infrastructure. The mountain tops are covered with snow for 5 months out of the year and have over 13 km of prepared tracks for all skill levels.

Belgrade in the wintertime is not for everyone. There is not too much snow but the dark gray architecture of the capital and lack of sun can make this city look too depressing for many people. Freezing cold winds that can last up to a week, only add to the atmosphere.

There are still things to see like Belgrade Fortress , Church of Saint Sava or Nikola Tesla Museum . Just don’t stay in Belgrade for too long. Three days will be more than enough. It is better to visit this city when traveling in Europe in spring .

When deciding where to go in Europe in February, take a closer look at Spain. A favorite destination for many, Spain in February and in winter, in general, can offer travelers both a cultural program, ski resorts and amazing beach holiday. And most importantly, all those experiences are budget-friendly.

Madrid and Barcelona in winter are so pleasant. We visited both at this time of the year and couldn’t be happier.  Barcelona to Valencia drive  is spectacular. After the rain, everything is green and blooming. A lot of places on that stretch of the road are incredibly quiet. Fewer tourists and balmy weather make February a perfect month to do sightseeing.

Mallorca and the Canary Islands are excellent places for winter sun in Europe. The daily temperature of the air is around 20C degrees. Swimming at this time is not too comfortable as the water is cool (many tourists from Northern countries still swim though) but sunbathing, swimming in hotels’ pools and exploring natural landmarks are perfect activities.

Part of Andalusia , located in the very south not far from the African coast, experiences the mildest winter climate . Accommodation is inexpensive, famous attractions, such as the Alhambra Fortress-Palace in Grenada or Seville Cathedral for example, barely see any tourists . The lively nightlife and local tapas make these places especially attractive. If you are there and crave some snow, nearby Sierra Nevada is a short drive away.

And then the Northern coast of Spain . I cannot help mentioning a few words about this multifaceted region. Mark and I spent February and part of March in Santander, driving along the coast, visiting totally mind-boggling beaches and Picos de Europa national park, and got amazed by all that beauty that lays in the north of Spain.

Hungary is another choice for those who prefer a mild and cheap winter getaway. And honestly, this country is amazingly beautiful during each winter month.

The temperature rarely drops below 0 degrees, so you will almost never see snow around the cities. But no, it is not going to look depressing. Of course, if you can, come during the Christmas market time. During the holiday season, the city is stunning. But February is no less beautiful.

The average temperature in Hungary in February is around 5C degrees. Days can be spent exploring the sights, and evenings soaking in the hot springs.

Besides Budapest, there are many other cool towns to visit . Some of them are Eger, Miskolc, Debrecen, Szentendre, Esztergom, and Visegrad . Most of them have hot springs, cute old towns, historical sites, and delicious food. Car rental in Budapest in February is incredibly cheap, reserve it in advance and see all these places.

Szechenyi baths have a temperature of 25C degrees and this is the hottest thermal spring in Europe. Floating in pools is an amazing experience all year round but isn’t it more fun to stay in pleasantly hot water under the open sky in the middle of February?

If you’re like anyone else this time of year, you started researching destinations to go to as soon as the leaves began to fall. While a weekend getaway might be sufficient for some, others might be interested in going abroad to warm countries in a more exotic locale.

Sure, you might immediately be daydreaming of Paris or New York , but these cities start becoming increasingly cold from October and so your mind should drift further south for warm countries.

Many countries that are warm this time of the year are located in the Southern Hemisphere (I’m looking at you South America !) where it is now almost summertime and there is a warm climate.

Besides being warm, it’s important to book a trip to a cheaper country. That way your money gets stretched further and more fun can be had.

The Best Cheap & Warm Countries To Visit

• South Africa
• United Arab Emirates

Located in between North and Central America, Mexico is the ideal country to escape to for whatever cheap fun in the sun action you are searching for. Whether it be the ideal beaches of Tulum, discovering the beautiful old town of Mexico City, or seeing the temples of the Yucatan Peninsula.

While it does have some incredible destinations, the real star of the show may be the food that Mexico offers. From tacos to huevos rancheros to mollete, Mexico has great food to offer any visitor. Considering a taco can be had for less than a dollar, you’ll have plenty of change left over.

Going to Mexico always means escaping to some of the best beaches in the world. With Isla Holbox in Quintana Roo, Playa Los Cerritos in town of Todos Santos, or Playa la Ropa in Zihuatanejo, Mexico has so many beaches on offer!

2. Colombia

A country that is in the midst of a comeback, Colombia is deserving of its place as one of the best warm countries to escape to. Whether you want hot sun in Cartagena or year-round spring-like weather in Medellin , Colombia has plenty to offer.

The real treat is visiting the country’s Coffee Triangle, where a large percentage of the world’s coffee is grown. You can taste some of the best coffee you’ll ever have straight from the source…a tour and coffee are only $10.

Also, there are some truly impressive historical sites to check out such as the Walled City of Cartagena, or La Popa Monastery located on top Mount Popa.

Colombian food also deserves a mention. Treat yourself to some traditional (and yummy) foods such as Bandeja Paisa or Chicharrón, and don’t be shy in trying out the street food. Arepa with cheese is a classic type of street food in Colombia that only sets you back about $1. So eat away without worrying about the cost!

3. Thailand

Thailand has exploded in popularity among visitors in recent years. It’s actually become a favorite destination for digital nomads and it seems like every day you see pictures of someone’s friends heading over for a week or two.

From Chiang Mai’s mountain ranges to Bangkok’s chaotic beautifulness to Koh Phi Phi’s party beaches, Thailand is just waiting to be discovered.

I recommend going rogue and renting a motorbike to explore all of the harder to reach spots. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the prices. Food, rent, and entertainment are all a third of what they would be back home.

Thailand is just waiting for you to explore its beautiful varied regions.

4. Indonesia

Unfortunately, Indonesia has recently been in the news for natural disasters that have pounded the island country. Now, it’s even more important to go visit the country and support it any way you can.

Many opt to go to Bali , but since you are a real trekker, you’re more likely to go off the beaten path to a spot like Maluku Islands or Tanjung Puting National Park.

Considering you can eat like a king for only $7 USD or go on a full day trip to go see endangered Orangutans, I’d say Indonesia is a great, warm weather country that’ll make your money go far.

5. Argentina

I bet you weren’t expecting to see Argentina on this list, but considering that summer is coming and the exchange rates are quite favorable at the moment, it’s a great time to go explore all that the country has to offer.

While the Argentine Peso is lower than usual, it’s a nice time to go visit the Patagonia region and do some incredible hikes.

Of course, no trip to Argentina would be complete without first visiting the Paris of South America (Buenos Aires). With its small streets, incredible street art, and delicious food, Argentina is a great fall or winter getaway.

Speaking of warm Southern Hemisphere destinations, South Africa is a country that’s becoming more and more popular among travelers. The country has big cities, nature, lively culture, and tons of history.

In terms of prices, it’s actually one of the cheapest in Africa. This is due to the fact that other countries on the continent have converted their prices to USD whereas South Africa has kept their currency.

It goes without saying that the wildlife in South Africa is pretty incredible all around, but especially in places such as Kruger National Park.

Moreover, there are great opportunities for hiking with Table Mountain or the Cape of Good Hope, and also wonderful beaches such as Boulders Beach that features a penguin colony!

Take advantage of South Africa’s affordability before the secret is out.

7. United Arab Emirates

When you think of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, what do you think of? If oppressive heat comes to mind then you’re not far off! Luckily, October is when the temperatures start to drop to a more reasonable average (around 86°F/ 30°C).

In terms of cost, you might think of Ferraris driving around Dubai, but for a visitor, the costs are pretty reasonable. A good meal should set you back about $15 USD and a museum pass costs about $1 USD.

There are also some colossus feats of architecture in the United Arab Emirates. From impressive mosques to palaces, you’ll be constantly admiring the architecture.

Being closer to the desert too also adds the benefit of opening up more opportunities for thrill-seekers. Go on a desert safari tour in the Liwa Desert, try some dune driving, or see the desert by quad bike. Maybe even try sandboarding . (Yes, that is a thing!)

If you can, try to avoid Abu Dhabi or Dubai to cut down on costs and get a more local view of this incredible country.

8. Portugal

This Mediterranean country is now on many travelers bucket list and is one of the best warm European countries to escape the cold.

I remember when I visited in 2014 and many of my friends were confused about why I would go to Portugal and not Spain first…I changed their minds when I came back with some incredible pictures of Portugal!

This country has every modern comfort and is easily accessible from the rest of Europe and North America (5 hours flight from the East Coast of the US and Canada.)

Portugal has a bit of everything too: castles, beaches, mountains, beautiful scenery, lakes, cool cities, and great architecture. You’ll get that vintage European feel while basking in the warmth and not breaking the bank.

With daily highs in fall of 72°F/ 22°C and lows of 59°F/ 15°C, fall or winter is an ideal time of the year for a vacation in Croatia. It also is way less crowded than in the warmer summer months. With fewer visitors means cheaper prices for tours and other tourist related activities.

Be sure to take advantage of great deals on cruises around the Croatian coast and check out some of the islands . Croatia really has some of the best beaches Europe can offer!

But not to forget to also mention, with it being a Balkan country, it offers more than just Mediterranean culture. You really feel something different and unique here.

It’s also a diverse country in that it offers many opportunities for adventurous types. Go check out the wonderful national parks such as Plitvice Lakes National Park, or try hiking, diving, snorkeling, or sailing.

As you can see from the photo above too, there are so many beautiful towns in Croatia! You won’t be short of options to explore.

Note: Although one of the warm countries in Europe, depending on which part of the country you’re in, Croatia can start to get a little bit cooler in deep winter…but only very rarely will drop below 41°F/ 5°C.

10. Bolivia

This South American country is often seen as a pass over for many going to visit Peru, but you are missing so much by not spending time exploring Bolivia.

Sure, it’s not as cheap as people originally assume, but you can easily live as comfortably for way less than back home.

Be sure to take one of the cheapest jungle tours on the continent, but be wary there are many shady companies. La Paz is also a lovely city to spend some time and has a large expat community.

Sucre is a city in the southern highlands that has a subtropical climate meaning its hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter.

The Historic City of Sucre with its incredibly well-preserved 16 th Century churches like Santo Domingo and San Lázaro showcase a blending of old-world European architecture and new-world American architecture. This is part of the reason why the History City of Sucre is actually a UNESCO world heritage site!

With it also being the prettiest city in Bolivia, I’d say its a good option to visit!

Bolivia is one of those warm countries that deserve to be a part of your next trip.

What Is The Warmest Scandinavian Country ?

Scandinavia is certainly not known for being warm this time of year, but perhaps you just LOVE the Nordic countries and you’d like to know what the warmest Scandinavian countries are anyway? These answers may surprise you, but we’d like to nominate these places.

• Røst in Lofoten, Norway

In the Arctic North of Norway (wait, what?!) is our first recommendation. Despite being pretty far north in Norway, it is sat right in the middle of the Gulf Stream meaning there is barely ever snow here. Despite its misleading name, Iceland is actually one of the warmest Scandinavian countries during winter (at least in the south of Iceland). It’s warmer than Minnesota this time of year and its a country that has become really popular recently. It has some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery in the world.

• Denmark / southern Sweden

Our last recommendations for the warmest Scandinavian countries are pretty obvious. Denmark is the southernmost Scandinavian country, and south Sweden has the same latitude, therefore this is your more traditional answer for what is the warmest Scandinavian country.

Do You Live Longer In Warm Climates?

Warmer climates are usually more enjoyable for people, so there is something to be said in believing that mental health can improve by spending some time in a warmer climate.

But in regards to physical health, it is a pretty well-documented trend that more people die during the winter than summer. Summer tends to be a time where people drink more water, eat healthier foods, and receive more Vitamin D from the sunlight.

So, in a sense, yes warmer climates can help you to live longer and be healthier—but mainly because of the way it changes our lifestyles for the better.

Are you looking for the best places to travel this winter? Every year, we search for warm places to visit in December, January and February so that we can get some sun.

Traveling in the coldest winter months gives us something to look forward to, while the days get shorter. This is important for our emotional well-being, and our mental health!

The best places to travel this winter all have ideal weather for escaping northern cold winters, longer days and dry seasons. Check out my favorite winter destinations below, from the US, Europe and the Middle East, to Central and South America, Southeast Asia and South Asia.

Let’s heat up with these favorite winter vacation destinations!

I did a bunch of research lately because I wanted to know the definitive answers for the absolute warmest places in the US to take a trip to during the coldest winter months. My research led to some so-so answers (Phoenix, some parts of southern Texas, San Diego and Los Angeles, and New Orleans), but the two top answers were clear.

Miami & South Florida

Probably the best and easiest US destination with warm weather in winter time is Miami, which hands-down has the hottest climate of anywhere in the contiguous USA during the coldest months of January and February.

I’ve been to Miami in both November and December and can vouch for the fact that this is the city where the heat is on (thanks, Will Smith) even when there are blizzards up north, coating places like NYC with snow and ice.

In doing my own research to find the hottest places in the US that are ideal for winter getaways, Miami tops the climate charts at 74-75 degrees F as daily highs in Jan. and Feb.

A few of my favorite things to do in Miami are taking photos at the Wynwood art walls, eating Cuban food on Calle Ocho in Little Havana and doing my own self-guided art deco architecture walk in Miami Beach.

Hawaii will always be known for being America’s favorite vacation dreamland. It’s one of the warmest places to go in the US during December, January and February. In fact, from November to March, Hawaii is 75-80 degrees (on average, as it varies by islands and their southern or western sides).

Winter is the perfect time to escape the cold and get out to Hawaii. On the north shore of Oahu, waves get crazy big in the winter! This is great for adventurous surfers and spectators alike. Catch the surfing world cup (the Vans Pipe Masters) in December at Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline). In Honolulu, the waves on the south side of the island are super chill and relaxing in the winter.

Next, the days being shorter in December means you don’t have to wake up as early to catch a gorgeous Hawaiian sunrise (try Haleakala on Maui).

You can even enjoy temperatures of around 65 degrees at night in most of Hawaii during December, January and February after the sun goes down (which, in December, is around 5:45pm; compare this to 4:30 pm on a lot of the East Coast!). Also, no passport needed!

Remember to be a conscious and respectful traveler in Hawaii. It’s particularly important in regard to understanding the Hawaiian political history of colonization and militarization by the United State,s and the impact that tourists and gentrification have had on displacing native Hawaiians. Consider recent natural disasters as well, like the wildfires in Maui: make sure to be conscious and respectful of the impact on local communities this winter.

Europe (EU) & Middle East

We have tried for many years to find the warmest places for winter in all of Europe and the Middle East. Here’s what we found and where we’ve gone.

Canary Islands, Spain

Until recently, we did not know where the Canary Islands were, but as it turns out, we’ve now been there twice, both in winter and in summer. Travel to the Canary Islands during winter will give you the warmest destination possible within the EU, and we know this because we researched the topic in depth.

What we learned is that the south and east sides of Tenerife like at El Teide National Park and Gran Canaria get the most sun. These regions of the Canary Islands are warmest year-round.

In winter, check out the Maspalomas Dunes of Gran Canaria and the southern beaches of Tenerife to get your tan on and to see spectacular and unique volcanic scenery.

The Canary Islands are also a great destination for couples, as it’s helpful to rent a car and road trip around these islands. Super romantic, for adventurers!

Tel Aviv, Israel

You may not have pictured Israel as a winter beach destination, but if you go to Tel Aviv between December and February, you can enjoy sunny days with highs in the mid 70s and get some beach time.

Israel is a fantastic cultural destination with so much to see, all in compact distances. Escape the winter cold at the Dead Sea, where temperatures year round are in the 70s and 80s, and you can take a dip and float in the saltiest body of water on earth.

The cost of travel in Israel is a bit like traveling in Europe, so we recommend traveling with a friend or significant other with whom you can share a private room.

Note that the rest of Israel has tendencies to get a bit cool during winter, and Jerusalem can even see snow.

Tel Aviv, though, stays consistently in the 70s through much of winter, making it a great escape for European tourists and Israeli natives alike, along with travelers from around the world coming to see the gorgeous Mediterranean beach culture.

South America

South America (mostly all of it) gets its summer when the northern hemisphere experiences winter. This is technically true for South America south of the Equator, but luckily, countries like Colombia are warm all year round (save for elevated areas with high altitudes!).

Cartagena & Santa Marta, Colombia

You can usually find a cheap flight to Cartagena from various US cities if you choose to travel in January and February. If you only have time off in December, don’t worry!

Cartagena is a super affordable destination for travelers and it’s hot all year round. Temperatures are never lower than 85 F during daytime and 75 F at night, and with the humidity, it always feels warmer.

Cartagena and its nearby tropical island archipelagos have beautiful pristine beaches, lots of sun all winter long (dry season begins in February) and is an ideal winter vacation for couples, where a private room in a hostel will cost between $40 and $75 USD.

Staying in a hotel will cost between $100 and $200 USD in the mid-range, and there’s a lot of value here!

Santa Marta is an even more affordable destination because you can somewhat escape the tourist prices in Cartagena that cater to foreigners from all over the world. Santa Marta is a bit more laid back and authentic in its historic colonial center.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Argentina’s seasons are flipped with those north of the equator, so during December through February, the country enjoys its summer. Between these months, Buenos Aires, the capital city, gets highs in the 80s and lows in the high 60s at night.

Sounds beautiful to us, and it was (when we went)! Buenos Aires is a lively city teeming with culture and history.

We love the Buenos Aires outdoor cafe scene , the colors in La Boca, the tango dancing and the incredible architecture. Oh, and don’t forget the awesome nightlife scene. Argentina is surely a winter vacation idea for escaping the cold. Leave your coat at home!

Chile’s Coastline

Chile is a skinny country that will have its summer when the US and Canada have their coldest winter weather. Santiago, the capital city, has a daily average high temperature of 86 degrees F in January. Valparaiso, which has a Mediterranean climate, will have warm temperatures in the mid-70s during Jan-Feb.

The northern third of Chile has a “mild desert climate,” giving beaches like Viña del Mar high temperatures around 80 degrees in the warmest months.

West coast of Ecuador

Ecuador, a country that looks small on a map, lies at the Equator! Yes, Ecuador has warm places to travel all winter long.

Beware, though, because not every city in Ecuador is steamy hot. In fact, Ecuador is famous for packing all four seasons and countless types of climate regions into a single country that is about twice the size of Florida.

To get the warmest destinations in Ecuador, keep your travels to hug the Pacific coast, rather than venturing inland to areas that will quickly rise in elevation. For example, the capital city of Quito is several thousand meters above sea level and has an annual climate of a temperate Andean 66-68 degrees F on average, all year.

For the hottest places in Ecuador, check out Guayaquil, Playa Puerto Lopez, Mompiche and Montañita, a beach village popular with travelers.

Central America

Central America is known for being tropical, close to the US and Canada, and a fantastic place to plan your winter travel!

In fact, for many years (and still to this date), I focused on having a winter getaway to Central America specifically. During these travels, I took trips to Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, from November to March (with most of those trips in January and February).

The Yucatan Peninsula & Tulum, Mexico

One of our favorite winter weekend getaways from NYC is the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

You can also save money traveling this winter by flying into Cancun from major US cities and then hopping a bus immediately to less touristy cities like Valladolid or Merida .

Even if you want to go to a different part of the Yucatan like Merida, Isla Holbox or Playa del Carmen, take that nonstop flight from any international airport and you can get on an easy ADO bus to your destination when you land.

We loved exploring the cenotes outside Tulum by bicycle and seeing the clear water, which is so warm it feels like a bath. We also liked day trips like Uxmal , the Mayan ruins site outside Merida. Both are great options for seeing culture.

Our favorite part of traveling in Mexico might be the tacos, so get your stomach ready for some great flavors. Temperatures are always around the mid-80s during winter months of December to February, and nights are rarely lower than the mid-60s.

Having taken my glorious winter trip to Guatemala in January, I’ll vouch for the T-shirt-friendly weather that had me wearing a shirt and shorts visiting the enchanting Mayan ruins of Tikal and the incredible natural landscape at Semuc Champey.

Winter is Guatemala’s dry season, so you can unabashedly enjoy dry weather, sunny days, temperatures in the 80s. I recommend a stay in Antigua , as most travelers often opt for! During winter, you can soak up Vitamin D in the 74-77 degree air at any of Antigua’s rooftop cafes and coffee shops , which is a total treat.

I’ve also been to Guatemala in April, and that was nice, too! A city like Antigua is a great choice of a destination for all year round. Having been there both in winter and spring, I can say it’s an excellent escape from the snow and blizzards at home in the US. I had an awesome time in Panama, one of my favoriate budget-friendly destinations in December! I spent time in all three parts of the Panamanian trifecta: in the mountains, at Boquete, at the beach, in Bocas del Toro and in the city in Panama City and Casco Viejo (the most beautiful historic quarter).

I was surely wearing a summer dress and a tank top and shorts at the beacn in Bocas, and while walking around Panama City, visiting the Panama Canal, in winter. Temperatures remain in the mid-80s or high 70s for December, January and February, and there’s a slight breeze.

At coasta locations like Bocas del Toro on the Carribean side, temperatures are 84-86 degrees year round, in fact! Nights may see the mid-60s, so bring a light coat and one pair of pants.

If you want to stay away from cold temperatures completely during your winter getaway, then stay away from the altitudes in Panama. The week before Christmas, I climbed the tallest volcano in Panama (Volcan Baru) and at the top, it was absolutely freezing! As we descended, though, it was sweaty all the way down in the sun.

Nicaragua is a fun place to go, and judging by the killer temperatures I had there in April (mid-90s… too hot!), I’d advise visiting this lovely Central American nation between November and March.

The best time to visit Nicaragua is indeed during winter, as the dry period falls between December and April. It’ll be wettest, with storms brewing in the Gulf of Mexico, during May to November, so conveniently, this is the less desirable time to go.

For winter climate averages, December to February is coolest, which provides some respite for those extreme high temps I experienced during my (potentially badly planned) trip in April. If I could do it again, I’d go to Nicaragua in December, January or February, especially as a break from the coldest temperatures at home.

For what to see in Nicaragua, check out a few of my favorite destinations: San Juan del Sur, Granada and Leon. I was charmed by the west coast Pacific sunsets and by the colorful vibrant personalities of these historic and colonial cities.

I took my trip to Costa Rica smack in the middle of December and it was bathing suit weather the whole time (on the coast). If you are looking for cooler temperatures (AKA a way to not lose your mind in your sweat), stick to the inland areas for ecotourism like Arenal and Monteverde.

If you do want to get your suntan on and go hiking in a bathing suit, check out year-round hot areas like Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo and Parque Nacional Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast.

Beware of the Costa Rica humidity: this is not a place to smooth out the frizz in your hair!

El Salvador

El Salvador is somewhere I’d really like to go during winter because of its tropical location on the west side of the Central American region. With beaches for surfing and the Ruta de las Flores hiking, it seems like a varied destination for winter travel that’ll be warmer than your home city this time of year.

Between November and March, El Salvador has its winter, but strangely, temperatures peak in April. This being said, in the months leading up to April (January-February-March), daily temperatures are in the 80s and the nights can be nice and cool in the mid-60s.

El Salvador’s tropical climate has its rainy season from around May to August, so by heading there during winter as a vacation destination, you’ll be experiencing the country in its driest period.

Belize has some of the best temperatures for a winter vacation: I don’t Belize you! (Ha ha)

Incredibly, Belize in winter (December to February) won’t make you sweat so much that you’ll want to escape to A/C: no, no, quite the contrary. The winter temperatures in this Caribbean and Central American destination hover in the 70s for much of the winter due to weather patterns in the Gulf of Mexico.

This being said, gorgeous destinations in Belize like Caye Caulker, San Ignacio, Tobacco Caye and the Great Blue Hole will have some of their driest weather between December, January, February and March.

Belize is a pretty adventurous travel destination , so go see for yourself!

Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a big place, full of amazing places to see. Lots of Southeast Asia will be hot during the northern hemisphere winter, but not all of them . Read on to see the hottest places in Southeast Asia during winter.

When talking about Vietnam as a winter destination, we have to be a little bit careful: Vietnam is a L O O O N G country, much like California is a long (tall?) state, and temperatures are very different at the top (near China) and the bottom (tropical, near the Gulf of Thailand).

I have been to Vietnam twice in winter (January to be exact, and twice!) and have spent time in the north, central regions and the south. If you really want the “sweat your face off in Southeast Asia experience,” you’ll stick to the south.

The north isn’t all too “cold” in winter, though. Hanoi, the capital city, will be 68-70 in winter. I was able to wear a sundress on some days, and just took a jean jacket with me in my backpack for the day.

Go to central Vietnam in winter, though, and Hoi An (one of my favorite destinations!) will give you daytime highs of 77-79. In thes outh, Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) is even warmer, with daytime highs anywhere between the mid 80s to potentially low 90s in December, January and February. No sweater needed!

Having spent a month in Vietnam in Hanoi, I can surely tell you how cool of a country it is. If you have the time (two weeks, or three), it’s great to explore of all the gorgeous scenery and culture inside Vietnam. The food is some of my favorite in all my travels, and that says a LOT.

Thailand may seem like an obvious choice for a destination to beat the winter blues, but my advice is to consider that only the southern half of Thailand is going to truly be insanely hot during the winter months of December through March.

Take it from me: having been to Thailand three times during winter, I have sweated my face off in the islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and I have frozen my feet off while trekking in the hills outside Chiang Mai in January, with lows of 44 F and no heat!

Given this, my immediate recommendation for visiting Thailand in winter is to fly into Bangkok, warm up at the beaches that are closer to the Bangkok region like Pattaya, and then, if you have five to ten days for your itinerary, head down to the islands via train or flight, hitting Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Koh Phi Phi. If you’re so inclined, spend some time on the famed beaches of Phuket to see what that’s all about.

I personally love the north of Thailand, and spent time up there in winter (January to be precise). Temperatures in Chiang Mai may be as high as 88-91 during January and February, and 84 in December. Nights will be down in the high 50s because of the dryness in the air. If you want to avoid the chilly weather of the mountains, stay at lower altitudes, because mountain treks will have nights in the 40s.

I have only taken a trip to Cambodia once, but it was in January-February, so I have a pretty good handle on the temperatures in Colombia in the “coldest” of the Northern Hemisphere winter months.

A winter in much of Cambodia is daily temperatures in the 80s and 90s, and nights in the 60s or 70s. It is quite beautiful. I remember getting so hot seeing the temples of Angkor Wat that my friends and I needed a siesta break in the middle of the day to beat the heat with cold drinks and resting.

If you want a sure way of finding hot weather and sun, head to Cambodia’s south coast to visit its famous coastline that has had tons of development in the last decade. The most famous destinations are Sihanoukville and the surrounding beaches.

Don’t worry, though, if you’re not a beachgoer, cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (along with the boat ride from one to the other) will keep your skin glowing with the tropical warmth. Nights are rarely cool enough to require a layer on top of a T-shirt, and sunny days during the winter dry season will keep rain away.

The Philippines

Can you tell already that I love traveling in winter to escape the cold? I’ve been to the Philippines not once, but twice, over Christmas, and can vouch that this is a HOT place to travel in.

January is the coolest month in the Philippines, but that doesn’t say much for a country that often has average highs at 90 degrees F most of the year. Destinations like Boracay have tropical climates that let temperatures, even in January and February, settle at 86 degrees F.

Dry season is from December to April or May, so by planning your travels for January, February or March, you’ll avoid typhoons completely and experience fewer rains than other times of year.

Malaysia comes in two halves, and both are warm in winter! This country located right above the Equator is tropical and a lot of fun to travel in!

I’ve been to Malaysia twice, spending time in Kuala Lumpur and Penang (my favorite). In December, January and February, Penang will have highs between 88 and 90 degrees, and Kuala Lumpur will be much the same, at 89-91. With nights in the 70s in both, and for basically the entire year, this such a nice winter getaway!

Also, if anything … go for the food. Malaysian food is incredible. Just look at this photo of my bowl of cold cendol (a sweet soupy and icey dessert to keep you cool in the heat, with jellies and a ton of coconut milk). YUM!

Would you have ever thought of a winter trip to Singapore? It’s a good idea for escaping winter and getting your fill of a tropical getaway! In December through February, Singapore days will be about 88 degrees and nights are only 76!

If you saw Crazy Rich Asians (the movie), you probably saw the scenes of eating in the hawker market. This is one of the best things to do in Singapore, and it’s a Singapore tradition to visit all the stalls to see what you want to eat, and then sweat while digging in!

What I like about Singapore is how clean it is. During my trip, I took the Singapore metro (MRT), visited Chinatown, went to rooftop bars with my friend who lived there at the time and tried LOTS of amazing food! I also liked Little India, as the city has such a mix of cultures.

The driest winter month is February, so that would be a great time to go and enjoy the warm temperatures.

Indonesia’s Many Islands

Indonesia is an island nation that has a tropical climate that keeps its temperatures warm all year (save for some elevated areas with high altitudes that would be inland). You’ve likely heard about Bali by now, and Bali makes a great destination for winter time, but did you know that Indonesia has other places to visit that are great ideas for escaping winter?

Visit Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok and Medan, and don’t underestimate the beauty in the Gili Islands, West Java and South Sumatra. Beware that the hottest month in Indonesia is actually October, so traveling in the months that follow mean very warm days in the 80s.

Lots of South Asia will be hot during winter, so it is a great region to travel and explore in December, January, February and March.

Sri Lanka’s Southeast and West Coasts

Sri Lanka is a tropical island located south of India. It is a lovely place to plan a one-week or two-week winter getaway, and temperatures remain tropical all winter long due to its location close to the Equator and in the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka does in fact have some elevated areas in its center, which will get chilly due to altitude at any time of year. For keeping your trip completely warm and hot, stick to the coasts, visiting Colombo, Galle Fort and the east coast beaches for surfing.

Southern & Southwestern India

The hottest places in India in winter are going to be the west and southern coast (think Mumbai-Maharashtra and Kochi-Kerala) and the southeastern provinces like Tamil Nadu.

Take Chennai, for example, on India’s east coast, which will have winter temperatures ranging from the high 80s to real feels of 90s during the daytime, even in February. And Goa, India’s famed beachgoer paradise on the mid-west coast, with temperatures in the mid-80s and an ocean temperature of around 82 degrees F. Sounds like bathwater.

India is also one of the most affordable places to travel in , and you’ll see when you get there that there is a huge bang for your buck.

While not entirely tropical, there are a few exciting travel destinations in East Asia that are warmer than others. Let’s see which ones make the cut for the warmest places in East Asia during winter.

Hong Kong & Macau

Although it’s far from North America and from Europe, Hong Kong is a worthwhile place to spend a winter getaway and it never disappoints.

Most North American and European citizens do not need a visa to get to Hong Kong, so you can show up when you want! For Hong Kong, a city with a scorching summer reaching the 90s and with humid, wet weather, winter months present an amazing time to visit.

Your escapes from the heat are getting on a junk boat and walking around at night .

Hong Kong winter, between December and February, is the driest time of year, so you’ll avoid all types of monsoons and storms. Humidity dies down, and days are comfortable in the 70s, with nights in the mid-to-high 60s.

Check out the various hikes that are ideal for the dry winter months, and of course explore the incredible urban jungles of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Make sure to check out all of the hidden photo spots in Hong Kong as well!

If you’re interested in visiting Macau (also spelled “Macao”), note that it has largely the same warm climate pattern as Hong Kong, being only an hour away by ferry. Macau has an incredible mix of east and west because of its Portuguese colonial roots. You can see this European history, meshed with that of China, apparent in the unique Macanese cuisine and architecture of Macau.

The Caribbean Islands

The Caribbean will always be a good choice for American and Canadian travelers seeking some winter sun during the coldest months of the year.

What’s stopping you from an easy warm getaway to the Caribbean islands during December, January and February? Start planning with these winter escape ideas below.

Cabarete & the North Coast of the Dominican Republic

Punta Cana’s white beaches and turquoise seas are probably what you think of when you think of spending the worst of winter in the Dominican Republic.

It’s what we think of, too, but it isn’t how we wanted to experience a trip to this country that sits rather close to the continental US. We opted for a trip to explore the sights and beaches of Cabarete and the Dominican Republic North Coast instead.

The good news for this destination as your winter getaway is that it doesn’t come at the price of a 4- or 5-star resort. In fact, you can stay in budget accommodations that bring you close to nature and other backpackers. In Cabarete alone, there’s Ali’s Surf Camp (also known as Surf Camp Cabarete), a nearby hostel and a few Airbnbs.

We opted for a combination of both, between our travels that ranged from Puerto Plata to Rio San Juan, by comparing accommodation options .

For fun ways to get around, there are the local guaguas. These are sure to give you an authentic and semi-crowded Dominican transit experience. The great thing is that they cost between $1 to $2 USD per trip! It’s great value for your money, because other things like private taxi rides don’t come cheap.

There’s lots to do in surf paradises like Cabarete. For coffee lovers, you can visit the local cafe scene .

For the more adventurous type, you can check out some unusual and unique things to do in Sosua and Puerto Plata .

Temperatures range from 65F at night to 85F during the day (it can feel warmer in the sun, but cools down by sunset and it’s pretty temperate).

Given that Jamaica is located in the Caribbean and you’ll want to avoid all of hurricane season completely, visiting this island in the winter time is the best idea. From January to February, Jamaica will have temperatures in the 80s, and this is the “coolest” time of year to visit the tropical island.

What’s there to do in Jamaica? Aside from the well-known destinations of Montego Bay and Negril, there’s Ocho Rios, Kingston, Blue Lagoon and Pelican Bar.

It’s easy to get a flight to Jamaica from the US or Canada.

Africa is far for most travelers coming from North America and Europe, but it is worth the trip. Much of Africa remains warm throughout the year, which makes the African continent a great idea for traveling in November, December, January, February and March.

Zambia & Victoria Falls

Due to being in the southern hemisphere, Zambia, a country in southern Africa, has a subtropical climate that will get you an 87-degree (Fahrenheit) day at Victoria Falls (one of the seven greatest natural wonders of the world).

Pair a trip to Zambia with a trip to Namibia, Botswana or South Africa, and you’ll be able to have a two-week bender seeing the best of Africa during winter in outrageously warm weather.

If you do make it to Zambia, be sure to go for a river cruise on the Zambezi River, trying local brews and seeing hippos with your boat driver and guide.

South Africa

Beautiful South Africa is an excellent choice for a winter trip, as the country is in the Southern Hemisphere and will experience the height of its summer during December, January and February.

Catch a safari, see the beaches in Cape Town, visit wineries in Stellenbosch and hang out in Pretoria, all in temperatures like 80-85 degrees F during the day.

In third place it’s Brussels , which ranks high thanks to the abundance of free attractions on offer, including the stunning Grand Place. Flights to the Belgian capital from London Heathrow are also the cheapest on the list, averaging at around £98.

A trip to Europe during the winter means cheaper airfare, fewer crowds, and off-season pricing. So if you’re on a budget, traveling during the colder months is a no-brainer. Whether you’re looking to go skiing, explore history via museums or just escape the cold where you live, there is a beautiful European destination waiting for you.

Athens, Greece

The Greek Isles boast mild weather year-round, and though the locals will be bundled up like there’s a blizzard outside, temperatures throughout the winter are quite pleasant for those traveling from colder climates. Visiting Greece during the winter means off-season pricing for hotels and attractions a lack of crowds. A win-win.

During the summer, visiting the Parthenon or the Temple of Olympian Zeus often means weaving your way through hordes of other sightseers. But in the winter, you’ll have these popular attractions practically to yourself. For your Greek getaway, it’s best to stay in a large city (like Athens) and do your island hopping as day trips as some accommodations in the smaller villages may closed for the winter.

Budapest, Hungary

If you’re not afraid of a little cold, then Budapest is a great destination for your winter travels. Hungary’s capital city has it all—great food, plenty of history and many free and affordable attractions .

Rome, Italy

Winter weather in Rome can be hit or miss, but off-season pricing in The Eternal City is always a winner. Hotels, Airbnbs, and other rentals all offer incredibly reasonable prices for accommodations during the off-season, and it’s not uncommon to find a four-star hotel whose winter prices are cheaper than a hostel during the summer.

The lack of crowds is another huge draw for Rome during the colder months. The ability to get into St. Peter’s Basilica or see the Trevi Fountain without having to navigate your way through a sea of tourists is an experience you won’t find during the summer.

Valletta, Malta

The island nation of Malta is one of the best-kept secrets in Europe, and somehow, despite its year-round sunshine and pleasant climate, it tends to be forgotten during the winter months. If you’re looking to remember what sunshine looks like, then Malta is the perfect destination for a winter holiday.

Flying into Malta internationally might be expensive, but if you hub in a large European airport, you can take a small airline like EasyJet, RyanAir, or Air Malta to the island. The capital city of Valletta offers cheap Airbnbs and hostels, and if you avoid the busiest parts of the city, it’s fairly easy to find a cheap meal . Malta is home to some beautiful nature, and luckily for those of us on a shoestring budget, hiking , swimming, and going to the beach are all free activities.

Jasná, Slovakia

There’s no shortage of great skiing opportunities in Europe, but in Switzerland, Austria, France , or anywhere in the Alps, really, making a ski trip work on a budget can be nearly impossible. Enter Slovakia, a beautiful country in central Europe whose northern region is home to the Tatra mountain range.

In Jasná, a mountain village in the Tatras, visitors can find world-class skiing at much more reasonable prices than in the Alps. It’s the largest ski area in the country, and boasts a wide variety of long runs catered to skiers of all ability levels, modern facilities and a gorgeous setting.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon during the off-season isn’t the warmest destination on this list, but with temperature averages that hover around 52°F during its coldest months, it certainly will do as a reprieve from the harsh winters of the north.

With a wetsuit and a little determination, surfing is even an option during the winter months, and the beaches, though not ideal for sunbathing, are much less crowded and just as beautiful.

Crowds thin out in Lisbon during the winter, and there are plenty of free attractions in the city that merit a visit. You can even opt for a Lisboa Card, which gives access to over 80 attractions as well as free transportation with the one-time purchase of the card.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen’s dark winters are still a bright spot for many travelers. Bundle up with scarves, hats, and a comfortable pair of warm walking boots for a stroll around Tivoli Gardens—a Winter Wonderland of lights and Christmas shopping during November and December.

Other fun and affordable attractions include ice skating, the Round Tower, Rosenberg Castle and Nyhavn. Plus, most tours and museums offer reduced rates. To warm up, enjoy a coffee or hot cocoa at one of Copenhagen’s many food markets and cafes , and sit back while the people of Denmark show you the true meaning of hygge.

London is a notoriously expensive city, but if you’ve never been there and you’re on a budget, then winter might just be the time to go. Accommodation prices at hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs are much cheaper during the winter. Even if you end up staying outside of Central London, the public transportation system makes it easy to get around the city.

Winter weather in London can be brutal, and the restaurants and drinks might not be the cheapest on this list, but when it comes down to it, London is an unbeatable location for one reason: all of its museums are free. That’s right, you heard me correctly. While visiting London, you can visit the British Museum, the V&A, the National Gallery, the Natural History Museum, and so many more, all without having to fork over any money for admission.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is well known as the filming location for King’s Landing in the HBO series Game of Thrones, but it’s also a really fantastic spot for a holiday at any time of year. Located on the coast of Croatia, just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy , Dubrovnik is gorgeous, with ancient stone buildings and tall city walls. Off-season prices for accommodation and a number of free attractions, combined with the natural beauty of this city, make Dubrovnik a must-see.

Temperature averages in the winter tend to stay at around 48°F in January, so while it’s not warm enough to take advantage of the water, it’s certainly nice enough to sit on a restaurant’s heated patio and enjoy a pint of pivo or a shot of rakija.

While it will be a little too chilly for a dip in the ocean, you can still enjoy the beach scenery, explore nearby cities like Huntington Beach and Dana Point, and visit Disneyland (crowds should be relatively low during January and February, excluding holiday weekends). Nashville, Tennessee

But if you visit after the start of the new year, you'll find a quieter version of the city with far fewer tourists. Of course, you can still enjoy Broadway shows, incredible dining, unbeatable shopping, and top-rated museums, and you might even score a deal on a hotel room. Austin, Texas

Charlotte, North Carolina

Located right on the border of North and South Carolina, Charlotte typically has mild winters with highs in the 50s. With a brand new year comes a brand new calendar full of potential vacation days. For those eager to begin 2022 with a little travel —preferably at an equally small price—the sleepy stretch of winter that follows the holidays is one of the best times to go. Not only are crowds at a minimum, but you’ll typically find some of the lowest fares of the year available before the spring rush of late March. However, airlines are still operating at reduced fleets which will impact fares along many routes and can make deals tough to find. So where will you spend your winter break in 2022? We’ve found six incredibly cheap places to fly this winter.

Flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)

For a fuss-free winter getaway at the last minute, San Juan is a hard one to beat. Not only is this year-round paradise relatively easy to reach from much of the U.S., but, as a U.S. territory, your visit won’t require a passport or even a change of currency. Most importantly, for budget travelers, flights to Puerto Rico are inexpensive. Flights can be had for under $280 round-trip, nonstop, on legacy carriers from major East Coast Cities. If departing from the West Coast, you can expect to pay around $330 for the cheapest flight, and, yes, that will involve a connection. If you’re willing to travel light on low-cost carriers like Spirit or Frontier, you’ll pay even less, but only if you adhere to the bare-bones carry-on policies required of their lowest fares.

Flights to Los Angeles (LAX)

A long weekend of reliable sunshine, swimming pools, and excellent tacos are sometimes all you need to break through a seasonal funk. L.A. has plenty of all three and is the gateway to other SoCal attractions like Disneyland and nearby Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. No matter where in the U.S. you’re departing from, a cheap winter flight to LAX will generally cost you around $300 off-peak this winter, give or take $30.

What to Do if You Miss Your Flight

Flights to London (LHR)

After two years of fluctuating restrictions, including an all-out ban and lengthy quarantine period, uncomplicated travel to London is once again a possibility for Americans. London may seem out of place on this list but fares for mid-week winter travel have been consistently reasonable from numerous U.S. cities. Vaccinated Americans can travel to the U.K. without a COVID-19 test but must submit to a test by day two of their visit. Unvaccinated Americans can also travel to the U.K. However, they must pre-book a series of two tests to be taken during a mandatory 10-day quarantine. As far as affordability, fares to London may not be as low as they were during the low-cost heyday of the 2010s, but they aren’t unreasonable either. For example, New Yorkers can hop a flight to Heathrow for $339 round-trip, currently on Portugal’s TAP Air. The lowest fare will generally run you around $500 round-trip from elsewhere on the East Coast or in the Midwest. From West Coast cities, that figure jumps by about $60. But, again, that’s on the low-end for midweek travel.

Flights to San Jose (SJO), Costa Rica

Costa Rica may not be the cheapest destination in Central America but, for travelers willing to pay a tad more at the tail end of a pandemic, this ecotourism hotspot offers reliable tourism infrastructure at a value. Flights to San Jose are reasonable from both coasts. New Yorkers can snag a nonstop on JetBlue this February for $185 round-trip, while Angelenos can find similarly priced flights on low-cost carrier Volaris. Elsewhere the lowest average fare hovers around $300 round-trip, plus or minus $40.

Flights to Florida

When the decision fatigue sets in and you feel incapable of choosing a sunny winter getaway, the right choice is sometimes the most obvious. Visitors to Florida will find plenty of coastline to go around, reasonably-priced accommodations for every budget, and more than enough flights to transport you cheaply to one of the three big local airports in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, or West Palm Beach. In Orlando (MCO), Disneyheads can just as easily score a cheap flight this winter, where the park is open with only slight operational changes as well as distancing rules in place. From Chicago (ORD), we were able to find February flights to Orlando (MCO) for $127 round-trip, nonstop, on American. Meanwhile, from Seattle (SEA), a February nonstop to Ft. Lauderdale is just $197 round-trip on Alaska.

Flights to Lisbon (LIS), Portugal 

If you’re skittish on both the expense and safety of travel to Europe this winter, Portugal may quash your concerns on all counts. As the country with Europe’s second-highest rate of vaccination after Malta, Portugal is also one of the most affordable destinations on the continent. TAP Portugal, its flag carrier, has some of the lowest fares across the Atlantic and, once there, food and accommodation are much lower than what you’ll find next door in Spain. The only catch? Hotels and homestays tend to fill up fast with Northern Europeans escaping winter at home, so it’s wise to book your lodgings as early as you can. Searching from San Francisco, we found January flights for just $390 round-trip on United, with nonstops on TAP going for $461 round-trip. Meanwhile, from Dallas (DFW), we spotted seats for $556 round-trip on United.

Here are 10 suggestions for quintessentially European things to see and do in the colder months.

Winter comes in many guises in Europe . In the polar north there’s serious snow, the northern lights and weeks without sun. Around the mild Mediterranean, you’ll find lingering warmth well into the season. And in the center of Europe: cozy cafe culture and halls decked with Christmas spirit.

It’s an inspiring time to visit grand cities, charming villages and cultural sites. With fewer queues, you can fit more into your itinerary, and off-season prices make European accommodation wallet-friendly in November, December, January and February. Using Europe’s train network you can explore countries at your leisure, and it’s easier to meet locals outside the often-frenetic summer tourist season. 

1. Drink glühwein at Christmas markets in Germany or Austria

December sees these romantic historic markets pop up all over Germany , Austria and other Central European nations. Expect cute stalls selling everything from gingerbread to sleigh bells, and plenty of good cheer, toasted with a glass of warming glühwein .

Top tip: Famous markets in Cologne , Vienna and Munich draw the tourist crowds, but seeking out ones in smaller towns is rewarding.

2. Warm up at one of Budapest’s famous thermal bathhouses

Couples skating hand-in-hand, breath cloudy in the frosty air – there’s nowhere better for it than the enormous outdoor ice rink in Budapest’s picturesque central park, Városligeti Műjégpálya . Feeling chilly afterward? Hungary’s capital is famous for its ornate thermal baths .

Top tip: At night seek out a ‘ ruin pub ’– an atmospheric drinking venue artfully housed in a once-abandoned building.

3. Witness the northern lights in Abisko, Sweden

Located almost as far north as you can get in Europe on a train,  Abisko in Lapland is for lovers of serious winter. The sun doesn’t rise for several weeks in December and January, but that darkness makes it one of the world’s best places to view the majestic aurora borealis (northern lights). Other attractions include cross-country skiing along national park trails and husky mushing.

Top tip: Stop off at nearby Kiruna to see the famous Swedish Icehotel .

4. Steel-gray skies set the mood in Transylvania, Romania

You can’t visit Dracula’s lair on a sunny day with lambs bleating in the fields, right? You want steel-gray skies, bare trees and a smattering of snow. Braşov and Sighişoara , two hours apart by rail, are gorgeous medieval towns with various connections to Vlad Ţepeş, the historical Dracula, though it’s doubtful he ever set foot in his so-called castle.

Top tip: Bram Stoker never visited Romania , so don’t expect many parallels with the book or films.

5. Bask in the sunshine in Andalucía, Spain

Some parts of Andalucía are further south than the African coast, so expect mild temperatures in winter . Accommodation is cheap and crowds are smaller at standout attractions like Granada’s Alhambra and Seville’s cathedral . Plus, tapas and nightlife in the cities are as enticing as ever.

Top tip: Head to the Sierra Nevada near Granada if you want snowsport action.

6. Have the best sites in Athens (almost) to yourself

It’s a real downer trying to Photoshop 500 people out of your would-be-prizewinning Parthenon photo, but during the winter in Athens , it’s not an issue. All summer stresses – crowding, tourist pricing, intense heat, queues, air pollution – more or less disappear. The average temperature during the winter is around 13ºC (55ºF). It’s the best time to explore the country’s ancient heritage and experience local culture.

Top tip: By all means do some island-hopping, but most accommodations close in winter.

7. Hit the slopes at Jasná, Slovakia’s best ski resort

Slovakia offers high-quality skiing at affordable prices . Accommodation and food are reasonable too, and there’s a friendliness that’s missing from some of the snootier Alpine slopes. Jasná is the best Slovakian resort, with long descents flanked by snow-laden spruce trees, set in the ruggedly lovely Tatras Mountains.

Top tip: Flights from the US direct to Slovakia can be pricey, so don’t make this your entry point to Europe.

8. Expect snow flurries and fairytales in Copenhagen, Denmark

For a fairytale European winter, it’s hard to beat the home of Hans Christian Andersen . Forget the over-hyped Little Mermaid and head to the city’s cozy bars and cafes to watch snow flurrying outside. In the heart of town, the 19th-century Tivoli amusement park is a romantic, kitsch delight around Christmastime, with heartwarming illuminations and body-warming mugs of glögg (mulled wine).

Top tip: Noma may have closed but Copenhagen still has an incredible restaurant scene. Go for broke at Alchemist , widely considered one of the world's best restaurants. (Book three months in advance and set aside 4–6 hours.)

9. Visit the unofficial home of Santa Claus in Rovaniemi, Finland

Fistfuls of Christmas clichés characterize Rovaniemi , the ‘official’ terrestrial residence of Santa Claus. Everyone’s favorite bearded man hangs out in an atmospheric Arctic Circle grotto, and it’s free to visit him (but photos are another story). Snow and reindeer add festive spirit, while the Arktikum Museum gives insights into life at these latitudes.

10. Be seduced by the incredible Carnival in Venice

Hauntingly beautiful and rather weird, Venice’s Carnival in February is a European highlight. Elaborate costumes and spooky masks bring the canal city’s colorful history to life. Costumed dances are pricey affairs, but you can have a ball enjoying the free events with a mask bought on the street – just be prepared for epic crowding.

Top tip: Book accommodation well ahead. Day-tripping in and out on a train will considerably lower costs.

13 Cheapest Winter City Break Destinations in Europe (Winter 2024)

If you are wondering what is the cheapest place in Europe to travel to this year, this post is for you! This is a comprehensive list of the cheapest winter city break destinations in Europe! True and up do date for Winter 2024!

This is a list of seriously cheap destinations for your next winter city break in Europe.

Tried and tested by me, one of the most frugal, long-term solo travellers out there! I can make €5  stretch much further than most, so when I say someplace is cheap, it is.

You will not find cities like Prague or Budapest on this list. I have been there and I don’t think those cities are affordable anymore. Many posts out there give you outdated and pre ‘European inflation and over-tourism’ data.

I will give you fresh and up-to-date ideas for the cheapest winter city break destinations in Europe.

Note: I have visited 7 out of mentioned cities in 2023 and the remaining in the previous year. 

What is the cheapest place in Europe to travel to in the winter?

The best and cheapest places in Europe for a winter city break are located in the Balkans, Caucasus and some of the Eastern and Baltic countries. The majority of the Western European destinations will be more on the expensive side, with a few exceptions which I will mention.  

Cities like Tirana, Sarajevo, Tbilisi, Sofia, or Krakow will be some of the cheapest winter destinations in Europe. 

But if you want to see the whole spread of the cheapest European cities to travel to, read on as I will list some cities in Western Europe that are equally affordable.

Is it worth going to Europe in Winter?

Europe is magical in the winter. Especially during Christmas time. With plenty of wonderful Christmas markets, and winter ski destinations but also surprisingly warm and sunny places, Europe is absolutely worth visiting in the winter.

What’s more, many typically expensive European cities become much more affordable outside of the summer season. 

Is Europe Cheap to Travel to in a Winter?

Europe can be cheap to travel to in the winter if you choose the right destination . Most popular winter ski resorts and popular Christmas markets towns will be expensive in the winter. Also, some cities like Paris, London, Vienna, Amsterdam or Dublin will remain expensive no matter what time of the year it is.

But some European cities become much more affordable in the winter months while offering plenty of things to do and many free attractions.

There is also a large variety of the type of winter destination you can indulge in in winter. Whether you are looking for an affordable snow and ski town, winter sun or affordable culture and sightseeing, you will find it all in Europe and often much cheaper in the winter.

I believe that if you want to, you can make everything affordable.

Yet there are some things that you just cannot change such as the accommodation or transportation prices. The cheapest hostel dorm bed I found in Barcelona in January is €20, while in Tirana you will pay half of it. And in Tbilisi even less!

Yet sometimes the price of the food, amount of free attractions and how walkable the city is will also add or detract from the overall count. 

But I will mention all that further below. 

In the description of each destination, I will include the average price of a hostel or average private room and estimated daily spend for a pretty budget-conscious traveller who also wants to enjoy the trip. I will mention some of the free attractions in each city as well.

So let’s go and have a cheap winter break in Europe this year!

Cheapest Winter City Break Destinations in Europe

Tirana, albania.

Tirana is one of the best and most affordable city break destinations in the Balkans and one of my favourite cities in Europe. It is just such a vibrant, colourful, interesting city to visit at any time of the year.

Albania is a very much up-and-coming destination and 2023 saw a massive increase in tourism. Yet Tirana still offers amazing value for money and plenty of great things to do that are either free or very affordable. 

For a capital city, Tirana is quite small and compact and very walkable and I only used busses on a couple of occasions during my 2 week stay.

Tirana is a truly fascinating city. It stole my heart with its crazy architectural mishmash, the colours, the greenery, the cafes, and the cool unpretentious vibe. 

Tirana is also one of the most affordable European capital cities. On all fronts – from the accommodation to the food and available attractions. Is it definitely one of the cheapest winter city break destinations in Europe.

Accommodation cost in Tirana in the winter:

You can find a great hostel in Tirana (Like Vanilla Sky Hostel ) for as little as €12 or a more than decent private room for only €15.

Daily spend for a budget city break in Seville excluding accommodation:

On a shoestring – €10 per day if you walk around and mostly eat street food.

€15 – a pretty comfortable but budget stay. 

€15 to €20 – A mid-range budget for an average traveller in Tirana which would allow for some paid activities and a glass of wine every now and then.

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sarajevo offers an incredible blend of cultures, and it’s referred to as the Jerusalem of Europe. Sarajevo is also one of the most affordable yet culturally rich capitals in Europe. 

Sarajevo is perfect to visit at any time of the year, including winter and makes for a fascinating city break. Famous for the Bascarsija historical bazaar, featuring narrow streets filled with shops, cafes, and traditional craft workshops.

It is also known as a place where the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand took place on the famous Latin Bridge which triggered the start of the 1st World War.

There are tonnes of things to do in Sarajevo yet it is still a very cheap European destination to visit. 

Accommodation cost in Sarajevo in the winter:

Sarajevo can be even cheaper than Tirana. It was in Sarajevo that I managed to find private accommodation for as little as €11 per night. But for the best deal, I recommend booking early. For the best value book a dorm in One Love hostel for just €10 per night!

On a shoestring – €10 per day or even less if you don’t want to pay for activities and eat just burek haha

€15 to €20 – A mid-range budget for an average traveller

Free things to do in Sarajevo:

• Bascarsija district, the old bazaar of Sarajevo
• Latin Bridge

• The Sebilj fountain

One of my favourite ways to discover a town on a budget is by joining a free walking tour whenever I first arrive. I can learn the history of the town, discover places that maybe I wouldn’t be able to find on my own and often meet other travellers in the process. If I have any burning questions about the location or safety – I always ask those questions to the tour guide. I highly recommend it!

Please note that those tours are free to join but given the tour often offers extreme value it is customary to leave a tip at the end of the tour. I always research what is the typical tip for a free walking tour in my current location. 

Belgrade, Serbia

Belgrade truly surprised me and from the moment I arrived I very much regretted that I only gave this city 3 days. It’s one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the Balkans and the whole of Europe. 

I visited Belgrade in the fall but it would be a wonderful city to visit during the winter too. The majority of the best things to do are evergreen and can be enjoyed no matter the weather or season. 

You will find Belgrade boasting an incredible atmosphere, stunning architecture and many wonderful cafes and restaurants as well as pretty awesome nightlife. In fact, Belgrade is called the nightlife capital of the Balkans.

With that being said, although Belgrade was more expensive then Sarajevo and Tirana, I found it still pretty affordable when it comes to eating out and attractions.

Although you might want to use public transport in Belgrade it is, wait for it, free for tourists as of 2023. That is because it is being restructured at the moment and there is no way a tourist can purchase a ticket. This will eventually change of course, so why not go to Belgrade now!

Accommodation cost in Belgrade in the winter:

Belgrade is not the cheapest when it comes to accommodation but you can find some great value there as well. I stayed at Hostel Fair and Square which offered pretty good value for money.

Krakow, Poland

Krakow is my favourite city in the whole world. Yes, I am biased. I am Polish and have been visiting Krakow since I was a child. But this city never grew old on me and it is ever developing, and changing while keeping its charm and magic. 

Krakow is one of the best cities in Europe to visit in the winter, especially around Christmas time. The Christmas market is located on the largest medieval square in Europe where you will be able to enjoy delicious Polish street food and mulled wine.

But you can also visit Krakow after Christmas, of course. Although pretty touristy and quite popular, Krakow is still one of the most affordable winter destinations in Europe.  

In Krakow, you will find a whole range of affordable accommodations and delicious local meals at one of the traditional Milk Bars. The city is also very walkable so you will not have to pay for public transport unless you want to. 

Accommodation cost in Krakow in the winter:

Although Krakow can be a bit more expensive than Balcan cities it is still way cheaper than cities like Prague or Budapest.  You can find an awesome hostel like Atlantis Hostel for €13 per night and a private double room for as little as €25.

On a shoestring – €10 per day will get you a sandwich for a breakfast and hearty meal in one of Krakow Milk Bars or other local eateries. 

€15 to €25 – A mid-range budget for an average traveller

• Jewish District of Kazimierz
• Cobbled streets of Krakow’s Old Town

Bansko, Bulgaria

Bansko is definitely one of the most affordable European winter ski destinations. Located in Bulgaria, it offers a combination of beautiful ski slopes, a charming town, and reasonable prices compared to many other European ski resorts. 

It also has a lively apres-ski scene, and many of the entertainment options, such as bars and clubs, offer reasonable prices compared to more upscale ski resorts.

The cost of ski passes in Bansko is often more affordable compared to ski resorts in Western Europe. You will find various options for lift passes, including multi-day passes and season passes.

While offering great skiing opportunities, Bansko has retained its local Bulgarian charm. In fact, it is also one of the most popular digital nomad destinations in Europe. Sort of, Chiang Mai or Eastern Europe.

Bansko is also one of the best hiking destinations in Bulgaria and there are many trails that can be enjoyed in the winter too.

Accommodation cost in Bansko in the winter:

Bansko is one of the most expensive winter destinations on this list mostly as it is actually a winter ski resort. But in comparison to some other famous ski towns in Western Europe, the accommodation cost is very reasonable. You will be looking at around €25 per night for a private room in Bansko.

€15 to €20 – a pretty comfortable but budget stay.

Zakopane, Poland

Here is another Polish winter destination I couldn’t recommend highly enough. If you are looking for a true winter wonderland town in Europe, surrounded by snowy peaks and offering some of the best hikes in Europe without paying a fortune, Zakopane should be on your list.

Zakopane is a beautiful city located in the Polish Tatry mountains offering plenty of great things to do as well as pretty great value for money.

Avoid visiting during Christmas and New Year’s as it is extremely popular among Polish tourists and prices get spiked during this time. Other than that Zakopane is a very affordable winter destination in Europe. 

Accommodation cost in Zakopane in the winter:

Zakopane is still more affordable then Bansko when it comes to accommodation mostly as it offers some great hostels like Good Bye Lenin where you can get a dorm for as little as €16 or a private room at Willa Danuśk a for €20. Not bad for a ski resort in Europe!

Instanbul, Turkey

Istanbul isn’t the first city that comes to mind when you think of budget-friendly European destinations. Unfortunately for the locals, this has now changed.

Turkey is going through some really tough times at the moment. As if the economic problems weren’t enough, recent natural disasters in the form of earthquakes have made things even worse.

And no, the message here isn’t to take advantage of this and roam Turkey for cheap. But for countries that benefit from tourism, it can be mutually beneficial. For the wallets of travellers and for the local economy.

Things get even more affordable in the winter so Istanbul might be just one of the best winter city break destinations in Europe.

Although technically only part of Istanbul is actually in Europe. Which makes it even more exciting!

Outside of the summer season, Istanbul is a fantastic city break destination. With fewer crowds and colder weather and plenty of restaurants and hotels offering lower prices, Istanbul is the ideal place for a winter trip.

To top it up, transportation within Istanbul is incredibly affordable. The extensive public transportation network includes trams, buses, and ferries that connect various parts of the city at reasonable prices.

A single fare can be as low as 0.40€. 

Accommodation costs in Istanbul in the winter:

The cheapest well-rated hostel (only above 8 on booking.com) I found in January is €10 per night. And the rest of them don’t go much higher than that!

For a budget traveller who prefers to stay in a private room, there are plenty of great rooms for around €20 per night like this in Baran Home Aparts .

Finally, there are plenty of fantastic hotels and boutique hotels in Istanbul that won’t break the bank like the excellent U nion Hotel Port or The Story Hotel Pera .

Athens, Greece

I am in Athens right now as I write this post. It’s December 2023 and I can confirm that Athens in winter is not only beautiful and sunny, but also excellent value for money. I have just finished my super delicious souvlaki dinner, which cost me €3.2.

Athens is a spectacular place to be in during European winter. It is one of the more popular city break destinations yet it is still pretty affordable. I would say a dinner out in Athens is only a little bit more expensive than in Tirana. 

Athens boasts incredible history and some of the most spectacular sights. Athens, the cradle of European civilization, is an ideal destination for a city break. If you plan well, you can even visit many of the famous sights for free, as admission to the Acropolis and many of Athens’ museums is free on the first Sunday of every month during the winter season.

Athens also offers some of the mildest winter weather in Europe. I am seriously thinking of crowning Athens a queen of European winter city break destinations. And not at all because I have just moved in here 🙂

Accommodation costs in Athens in the winter:

Accommodation prices in Athens go well down in the winter. A dorm bed in this hostel will cost you €20 in the summer and only €10 in the winter.

is on the more pricy side but the cost of moving around and the cost of food makes up for it. So it all balances well.

Palermo, Italy

I found Sicily to be not only my favourite region of Italy but also the most affordable. 

When I first visited Italy I was prepared for high prices some cities and regions proved to be on the pricier side. However, I found Sicily to be surprisingly affordable especially if you choose the right destination.

Palermo definitely is not the cheapest European city break destination but compared to other Italian or Western European cities it punches in a lot of value. Palermo is certainly not the cheapest European city break destination, but compared to other Italian or Western European cities, it is very affordable. A visit to this stunning, historic city, which offers great food and warm weather even in winter, can cost you from as little as €30 per day.

During my stay in Sicily, I feasted on incredibly delicious arancini and pasta for dinner. If that’s not an incredible way to save money, I don’t know what is. Plus, Palermo is very walkable and you don’t have to spend money on transport.

Palermo is the capital of Sicily and a good starting point for discovering nearby gems such as Cefalu or Mount Etna. In Palermo itself there is plenty to experience, e.g. local markets, nearby beaches and historical sights such as the Norman Palace, Palermo Cathedral and the Capuchin Catacombs.

Accommodation costs in Palermo in the winter:

Unfortunately, in Palermo accommodation isn’t as affordable as in other European cities I have mentioned in the post. Even a bed in a dorm will cost you between 20€ and 28€.

But if you are happy to spend around €30 you will be able to enjoy a pretty comfortable private room in the centre of Palermo with breakfast included like at Al Politeama House.

Lagos, Portugal

If you’re looking for affordable winter sun in Europe, look no further than Lagos. Even if you can’t swim in the sea and the weather may not be as glorious as in the warmer months, Lagos is still a great affordable coastal town in Portugal in winter.

This summer favourite Portuguese beach town becomes much more affordable in winter and many hostels and budget hotels are open all year round!

If you’re wondering what to do in the beach town in winter, don’t worry! The natural beauty of Lagos, including the stunning cliffs, rock formations and beaches, is not limited to the summer, and the windier weather can make the spectacular views even more dramatic. This part of Portugal is also great for hiking! There are also several places around Lagos that you can visit on a day trip, such as Faro or Portimão.

When it comes to the cost you can find accommodation in Lagos for as little as €14 for a dorm bed. Food in Portugal, like in many Mediterranean countries is delicious and pretty affordable.

Expect to pay between €15 and €20 for a hostel dorm bed in Lagos during the winter season. If you prefer a private room, depending on the location you will pay between 30 and  €40 for some of the cheapest options.

€30 – A mid-range budget for an average traveller

Tbilisi, Georgia

Tbilisi is one of the most unique and affordable winter city break destinations in Europe. 

Georgia is a fascinating country of only  4 million inhabitants and heaps of beauty. Tbilisi as its capital is a great representation of what this country has to offer. Culture, dramatic and rich history, delicious food and breathtaking tapestry of natural landscapes. 

To top it up, you will not only find a plethora of cosy bars, cafes and restaurants but also natural hot springs which make Tbilisi an ideal winter break destination. 

The city is rich in iconic landmarks such as the Narikala Fortress, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Tbilisi or the Kura River and the historical Tbilisi’s Old Town, where narrow cobblestone streets lead to hidden courtyards and traditional balconied houses. Tbilisi is a foodies paradise with cuisine offering unique flavour profiles.

Tbilisi is also one of the most budget-friendly destinations in Europe and while it is steadily gaining popularity maybe this year is the time to visit before its affordability charm!

Tbilisi offers incredible value for money when it comes to accommodation. You can get a bed in a highly-rated hostel for as little as €4! The super cosy Friends Hostel charges €6 per night in February!

The incredible Elia Boutique Hostel charges €11 per night and a private room and a whole apartment in the town centre will be just €16. It doesn’t get cheaper than this!

Seville, Spain

I love Andalucia. I was lucky to have lived in Andalusia for 3 years and I can confirm it is one of the best places to be in Europe during winter months. And Seville is no differnt.

Although a bit more expensive than other towns on this list, being the capital of Andalucia, it can be surprisingly cheap for the array of attractions and delicious food it offers.

Like with many other cities, you can make it as cheap or as expensive as you want. And it does get not only cheaper but kind of nicer in winter.

Seville is amazing for an affordable winter city break in Europe. The weather is mild, there are tonnes of amazing attractions in Seville and the tapas scene makes eating out very affordable.  

I have visited Seville both in the summer and in the winter , and maybe I actually prefer it in the colder months. The prices of accommodation will be lower, there will be fewer tourists around in general and you will be much warmer than in some other places around Europe.

What makes Seville an outstanding value for money is how walkable the town is (you don’t need to pay for transportation), how affordable the food can be, and how many awesome free things to do there is in Seville.

Among the free things to do in Seville are visiting the stunning Plaza de España or wandering through the historic neighbourhoods of Barrio Santa Cruz and Triana. The tapas culture in Spain is incredible so you will be able to eat out pretty cheap yet spectacularly. 

Accommodation cost in Seville in the winter:

Hostels get much cheaper in Seville in the winter and you can get a dorm bed in the best-rated hostels in Seville for as little as €16. The private rooms in the centre will start from €30 per night.

Skopje, North Macedonia

Skopje is one of the most interesting cities I have ever visited. Interesting in a very strange way which causes a bit of controversy. While some travellers dismiss it as kitschy and tacky, some really enjoy the unusual architectural landscape of this North Macedonian capital.

I really like Skopje! It is weird and beautiful at the same time. Small enough so it can be discovered on foot but large enough to give you enough to see and do for a few days! 

And the controversy?

Dubbed the ‘city of statues,’ Skopje embarked on the “Skopje 2014” project four decades after a devastating earthquake in 1963. The controversial project aimed to give the city a more monumental appearance, adding statues and structures reflecting historical and cultural figures. 

I found the statues bizarre, slightly overwhelming and kind of amusing. I even wondered how would the city look without them, and came to the conclusion that modern Skopje is now defined by this architectural phenomenon.

But Skopje boasts many more attractions while being a very affordable European capital.

The Old Bazaar is a vibrant and historic market area with narrow streets, Ottoman architecture, and a variety of shops and restaurants. The medieval fortress offers panoramic views of the city and the Vardar River. 

Skopje’s charm peaks in spring or fall, but even in the winter, covered in snow, the city holds a unique charm, making it one of the most interesting and cheapest winter destinations in Europe.

Accommodation cost in Skopje in the winter:

You can find hostels as cheap as €8 in Skopje but I recommend staying at Hi Skopje which is still pretty affordable! Pravate rooms are cheap in Skopje starting from around €23 per night.

€18 to €25 – a pretty comfortable but budget stay.

Europe is by far the most popular tourist destination among all continents. According to UNWTO , in 2023, 54% of the world's international tourist arrivals were in Europe, with the southern/Mediterranean region being the most visited destination. The most sluggish recovery has been witnessed in the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, each of which has failed to attain even 75% of pre-COVID tourist arrivals. This stark disparity in the recovery of tourism across the continent poses a challenge.  Despite the enormous volume of tourists that fly over to Europe each year, many of its most exquisite locations continue to be dejected in favor of hotspots such as the beaches of Ibiza, the bustling streets of Paris, or the canals of Venice. Owing to such a rapid inflow of tourists into only a handful of destinations, the sustainability of tourism in Europe falls under threat. Recently, more and more vacationers are becoming critical of tourist hotspots, criticizing them for being “tourist traps” and are instead looking to venture towards less crowded destinations. Another factor that unsettles tourists is the rate of inflation witnessed in post-pandemic tourism. According to Allianz Research , the daily rate for a hotel room (global median) jumped to $212 in the first quarter of 2023, up from $156 in Q1 2022 and $129 in Q1 2021. Moreover, a recent survey by Travel Weekly showed that 87% of European travelers are taking measures to reduce costs in their vacations. This includes opting for cheaper accommodations, reducing the budget used on excursions, and switching towards more affordable destinations.

As more and more tourists become irked by the overcrowded and inflated vacation experiences in particular hotspots, it is possible that tourists in 2024 will set their sights on destinations offering budget-friendly vacations with similar itineraries. In the past, there were either no avenues for the common tourist to arrange a vacation to such areas, or they would be considered as being unreliable, unsafe, and unfit for tourists. However, over the last decade, this perception has shifted as people have access to more and more avenues to plan trips to some of the most remote recesses of the world.

Websites like Booking, property of Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG), and Budget Your  Trip provide data for locations, resorts, and excursions. This enables previously unknown tourist spots all over Europe to market themselves without investing the same level of resources as world-renowned hoteling brands. Accumulating these data points allowed us to calculate the total expected amount required on a trip to each country. Each country was ranked in ascending order with respect to this metric, and the top 15 countries were selected as the cheapest European countries to visit in 2024.

Japanese opt for short, cheap overseas trips for Golden Week holidays

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese travelers are opting for shorter, cheaper and closer overseas trips during the country's Golden Week holidays as they feel the pinch from the yen weakening to 34-year lows and higher inflation abroad, according to a major travel firm.

The average unit price for an overseas trip fell 1.5 percent from last year's Golden Week to 204,900 yen ($1,300), while the average number of days traveled was down by 1.0 at 6.0 days, H.I.S. said.

Cost-efficient holidays to neighboring Asian destinations have proven popular for outbound tourists, with South Korea's capital, Seoul, topping the ranking of the most popular travel destinations and Taiwan's Taipei coming second, the travel agency said.

Honolulu in Hawaii, which traditionally topped the list prior to the pandemic, was down to third place.

Overseas travel bookings for the holiday period rose 23.2 percent from the holidays in 2023, as Japan has entered its first Golden Week holiday period completely unaffected by coronavirus-related travel restrictions.

People are able to have up to 10 days off this year from late April to early May if they choose to take paid leave over the three non-holiday days.

A woman from Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo, who is taking a vacation to Singapore, said she did not intend to buy any souvenirs amid price increases. "I want to focus on enjoying tourist spots and eating food," she said.

Despite the removal of COVID-19 travel restrictions, overseas travel bookings during the holiday period were still 46.7 percent lower than the same period in 2018, H.I.S said.
