A Review of Wendella’s Architecture Boat Tour in Chicago

Lauren

  • November 20, 2023
  • Updated December 12, 2023
  • In Illinois

Are you thinking about taking an architecture boat tour in Chicago?

If you ask anyone what to do when visiting Chicago, an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River is always highly recommended.

A boat tour is an easy way to see a large chunk of Chicago in a short amount of time. Plus, you get the added bonus of learning about Chicago’s history, like the Great Fire and the World’s Fair, and how it impacted Chicago’s landscape and skyline.

We took a boat tour with Wendella when we visited Chicago. We enjoyed the guide’s humor and her extensive knowledge about the city, buildings, and architects.

You have many options when it comes to Chicago River boat tours. However, we love that Wendella offers both 45 and 90-minute tours. And they are the only boat tour company that is open year-round!

The review below shares more about what to expect on a Chicago architecture tour with Wendella. Let’s dive in!

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, we may receive a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

What to Expect on a Chicago River Tour

A Chicago architecture boat tour is one of the best ways to learn about the city’s history while also seeing a large chunk of the city in a short amount of time. It’s a great option if you only have one day in Chicago . But we think it’s worth doing no matter how much time you spend in the Windy City!

view of window washers on the Salesforce tower from the Wendella Chicago architecture boat tour

On a Wendella boat tour , the guides narrate the tour, sharing funny jokes and interesting stories about famous landmarks like the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Tribune Tower , and the Wrigley Building .

The tour offers a fascinating look into the city’s evolution, from the Great Fire of 1871 that spurred innovative architectural rebirth to the groundbreaking designs that define Chicago’s skyline today.

Wendella Architecture Tour: A Review

Tour Options

Wendella offers several different tour options to suit your time constraints and interests.

Their  45-minute Chicago River Architecture Tour  provides a short yet comprehensive tour of the city’s skyline. It shares interesting facts about the various buildings along the Chicago River (and others nearby) while sharing information about the city’s history, including the World’s Fair and the Great Fire.

Wendella also offers two 90-minute tours.  The 90-minute   Chicago River Architecture Tour  is a more extended version of the 45-minute tour, giving guests a more comprehensive tour that navigates all three branches of the Chicago River. This is the most popular tour for good reason.

Wendella’s Lake and River Architecture Tour   is their original tour offering. It not only takes you on the Chicago River but also Lake Michigan. You’ll get to enjoy and learn about Chicago’s skyline as seen from the Chicago River. Then, you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and float out onto Lake Michigan for the best view of the city.

Prices for the Wendella Chicago Boat Tour

How much a Wendella architectural boat tour costs depends on the tour you take. These are the prices as of publication:

  • The  45-minute archi t ecture tour  costs $12 for kids ages 4-12 and $27 for anyone 13 and up. Children under 4 are FREE but still require a ticket.
  • Both  90-minute tours  cost $19 for kids ages 4-12 and $42 for anyone over 12. Children ages three and under are FREE, but still, you need to reserve them a ticket.

Amenities on Board a Wendella Boat Tour

Plenty of amenities are   available to you during your architectural river tour on Wendella.

Let’s get the most critical amenity out of the way first. Yes, there are  restrooms on board ! So, if you’re visiting Chicago with kids, you don’t have to worry about them needing to use the bathroom right after the boat leaves the dock.

people sitting on the top deck of the Wendella Boat Tours Chicago Architecture tour

If you get hungry or thirsty on board, there is a  full-service bar  serving soda, wine, local beer, and cocktails. They also have some  snacks  available for purchase.

Lastly, although we recommend sitting on the top deck for the best views of the city, the below deck is climate-controlled. So, if you’re visiting Chicago on a hot day or during the winter, you’ll be plenty comfortable on board.

Wendella Chicago River Tour Experience

You’ll have fun on a Wendella boat tour! Most people agree that the Wendella architecture tour is a  more relaxed experience  compared to other Chicago boat tours. The guides tell corny jokes (almost on par with the Jungle Cruise at Disney) while sharing exciting history and tidbits about the architecture in Chicago.

The  45-mi nute tour  will take you along the Chicago River, first heading west and south before turning around. You’ll get views of the buildings in the Loop, West Loop, and River North neighborhoods, as well as the Navy Pier.

View of Chicago skyline from the Wendella Boat tour near the Navy Pier

Wendella’s  90-minute architecture tour  follows a similar route as the 45-minute, except it heads further south on the Chicago River and explores some of the north branch.

If you opt for the  90-minute Lake and River tour , you’ll experience a shorter tour on the Chicago River, but then you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and enjoy the view of the skyline from the massive Lake Michigan.

This  map  on Wendella’s website gives you an idea of where you’ll be along the river and lake.

The boat tour on the Chicago River was very  smooth . No big waves to cause rocking of the boat. Of course, if you’re prone to motion sickness, you may want to take medication or wear a patch prior to boarding. We did not do the Lake and River tour, but it is probably rougher out on Lake Michigan than the river.

Fun Fact: There are almost two dozen bridges that cross the Chicago River in the downtown area, alone. You’ll go under several of them while you’re on your architectural boat tour!

Tips for Your Wendella Boat Ride

  • Arrive early:  They ask you to arrive 15-30 minutes before the tour to allow time to board. We arrived precisely 30 minutes before the tour started, and people were already in line. If you want a seat on the top deck, get there early.
  • Sit near a speaker or close to the guide:  The guides share so many interesting facts and silly jokes you don’t want to miss them because you can’t hear them. They use a microphone, but with the sounds of the city, the wind, and other passing boats, it can be hard to hear everything.
  • Dress warmer:  Unless it’s the middle of summer, you’ll probably be a little colder on the boat than you are walking around the city. Between the water and the breeze from the boat, it makes you feel colder, so bring a jacket in the fall and spring, and don’t forget a hat and scarf in the colder months.

Next up, we have another fantastic river cruise that’s a bit more “intensive” than our first. The Premer Chicago River Architectural Lunch Cruise  is the perfect way to spend an afternoon and a much better alternative to grabbing lunch at a regular restaurant.

This tour is perfect for any time of year, showcasing the beautiful city at its very best throughout the centuries accompanied by a delicious meal.

Meet your guide and the rest of your group in downtown Chicago, where you’ll hop on the “Odyssey” – a glass-enclosed boat perfect for exploring the city in rain or shine.

It’s not only one of the most beautiful boats out there, but is also one of the best for enjoying 360 views without any obstructions. I immediately noticed how clean the vessel was, and the tables were all spaced out so that we had enough space without feeling off by ourselves.

As you meander along the majestic waterway, you’ll experience all of the city’s best architectural sights on each side of the river as you enjoy a tasty 3-course lunch.

I was a bit surprised at just how delicious it was, with a salad to start, and a choice of the chicken, salmon, pasta, or tender short ribs as the main dish. Oh my, the dessert of cheesecake was wonderfully creamy and decadent, but the sorbet looked very refreshing and nice for a hot summer day.

As you enjoy your perfectly-timed dishes, take in the looming skyscrapers like the Willis Tower or the Tribune Tower, along with the Merchandise Mart, Chicago Opera Theater, Union Station, and the legendary Navy Pier.

As you pass each landmark, the guides are there to recount their histories and important events that have taken place at each one. Whether you’re there for a romantic outing or want to bring the entire family along, this is the perfect excursion!

3. Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise Aboard Chicago’s First Lady

  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Departure: 112 E Wacker Dr, Chicago
  • Departure Time: Between 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Includes: Live commentary on board, local guide, river sightseeing cruise

Our next voyage is one of the best for exploring the intricate designs influenced by the mighty Chicago River and the city’s dramatic history. The river and its architecture, themselves, have been witness to the ebb and flow of its industry, transportation, revitalization, and recreation.

If you really want to learn about its revolutionary stories of resilience and are on a budget, the Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise Aboard Chicago’s First Lady Tour is one of your best bets.

Your tour will kickstart with the Chicago Architecture Center, which is known for being a bastion of knowledge surrounding the celebration and promotion of the Windy City as a center of architectural innovation.

You will just see it from the water and hear about its story on this tour, but if you decide to go back to check out the interior, you’ll get a discounted admission of just $5 when you show your river cruise ticket.

The Navy Pier was one of the highlights of the tour for me and hearing how it has been used as the obvious naval base and shipping hub, to a present-day hotspot for entertainment was quite fascinating.

Marina City was also quite interesting, and you’ll learn all about how it was used to bring back more middle-class inhabitants. The Trump International Hotel always commands attention with its shiny exterior that begs to have photos taken of it.

There are plenty of other fascinating landmarks you’ll see and learn about, but the Willis Tower was definitely one of the most interesting for me. If you’d like to see some aerial views of Chicago, make sure to check out the Skydeck located there.

This is such a fantastic way to get the lay of the land and learn about the important metropolis, that you have to add it to your list!

4. Chicago River Boat Architecture Tour

  • Departure: 465 N McClurg Ct, Chicago
  • Departure Time: Between 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Includes: Local guide, port pickup and drop-off, bottled water, coffee and/or tea

Next up, we have yet another amazingly affordable excursion if you’d like to see some of the best CHI town has to offer. I’ve been on a ton of different types of Chicago tours, and river cruises like this one never fail to impress me or anyone else I’m with.

The Chicago River Boat Architecture Tour  packs in a ton of fun, history, exciting tales, and beauty in just 1.5 hours so there’s no reason to miss it!

Please don’t wait until one of your last days in Chicago to do this tour! If you’re going to take any advice, please let it be that you need to take this on the first day you’re there.

The incredibly knowledgeable, creative, kind, funny guides will create a masterpiece of an experience for you, making anyone excited to be in the Windy City.

Expanding on this aspect, the guides are all born-and-raised Chicagoans who are passionate about promoting their city and making everyone feel like family, which they do seemingly effortlessly.

Meet at the pier or get picked up at the port and hop onboard, where you’ll get to enjoy complimentary bottled water, coffee, and/or tea as you enjoy the amazing views of the city and river. If you’d like, there’s also a little bar on board for you to purchase beer, wine, and cocktails!

Here, you’ll learn all about the influential landmarks that line the river, including various skyscrapers, the lively Navy Pier, and the infamous “Bean”/Cloud Gate. I loved being able to see the 100-year-old Art Deco buildings which are simply timeless, along with various Neo-Classical and Gothic designs.

For any architecture or history buff, or anyone who can appreciate art, this is for you.

5. Chicago Architecture Boat Tour

  • Departure: 900 S Wells St, Chicago
  • Departure Time: Between 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Includes:  Restroom on board, Outside seating available, Seating is first come first serve basis, Guided architecture cruise of the historic Chicago River, Fully enclosed interior with air conditioning, seats, & windows

Whether you’re a seeker of architectural beauty or would simply like to learn more about Chicago’s wild history, you’re in the right place here. From old-school gems to modern-day marvels, you’ll dive right into the history of Chicago that’s carved into its skyline and the very fabric of the city, itself.

If you’re ready to be mesmerized and maybe even fall in love with it, then sign right up for the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour !

You’ll meet your guides right at the river, so you can hop on the boat and get situated for a fun time. You may know that while the Windy City was nicknamed such due to its locals being “full of hot air”, it’s no secret that the wind coming off of Lake Michigan is no joke.

With this tour, you get to ride in a boat that offers a fully-enclosed interior complete with climate control, seats, and windows so that no one is freezing while enjoying these picturesque views.

The live narration was simply impeccable, bringing to life each famous landmark’s intriguing history – many of which are lessons we’d never have learned in school!

Cruise on by both modern-day and historic buildings such as the Civic Opera House, the Wrigley Building, and Willis Tower, with some of the best viewpoints possible.

I had a ton of fun with the guides as they offered trivia about the various structures, which also seemed to bring the entire group together nicely.

Luckily for me, it was perfect weather when we went, so we were also able to enjoy the unreal vistas from the uncovered deck. Passing by Navy Pier and being able to hear the happy voices and laughs of visitors as we passed by was pretty enjoyable, too.

Overall, this is a must-do on any visit to Chicago if you’re serious about learning more about its architectural significance throughout the centuries.

7 things that might surprise you about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour

T here are plenty of ways to take in the sights, sounds (and smells) of Chicago, but you don't necessarily have to be on land to do that.

And you don't have to be a tourist, either.

In fact, one of the most beloved ways — among locals and visitors alike — to experience city is by journeying across the Chicago River and Lake Michigan while a tour guide talks about buildings and regales you on the untold story of Mrs. O'Leary's cow.

In other words: a Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.

"As you're going up and down the Chicago River and on Lake Michigan, you're seeing the city’s evolving architecture, which is changing every year" said Andrew Sargis, director of sales and marketing for Wendella Tours and Cruises .

Wendella, billed as Chicago's "original" architecture tour, in 1935 gave its first architecture tour of the city from a wooden diesel yacht out on Navy Pier, Sargis said. Now, upwards of 20 architecture tours are offered daily, with more on the weekends. On average, Wendella tours see roughly 100,000 passengers each month over the summer, Sargis said.

And though the majority of guests on any given Wendella architecture tour are tourists, Sargis said, locals take them, too.

MORE: Even Chicagoans can't get enough of this tourist attraction: ‘It's about the only touristy thing I do'

"I was surprised when I first started, we get a lot of repeat locals," Bobby Scheffle, a Wendella tour guide told NBC Chicago. "And always there's a lot of local people that come on when they have guests visiting them in town. They like to show off the city this way."

But there's something else about the experience that makes it so very Chicago.

"I think it is really unique to experience the city from a boat on a river, because we think about other big cities in the United States -- there aren't many that have a river that go right through downtown," Scheffle said. "You feel like you're in the city, you hear the noise, and you see the buildings and all that."

Whether you're taking the ride for the first time or the 50th, bringing out-of-town guests out for a memorable activity or just itching to be a tourist in your own city, here are seven things to know about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.

Will weather stop a tour from running?

Wendella's architecture tours run year-round, Sargis said, although "weather is a factor."

Weather events like ice on the river or significant snowfall can impact operations, Sargis said, but they typically don't, since the Chicago River -- a federal waterway -- must remain navigable year-round.

While Wendella's boats do have climate-controlled indoor lounges, tours during the winter may run at limited times. But rain, snow, extreme heat or wind, unflappable Chicagoans still show up.

"We went on drizzly day a few years ago," Kathy Rambo wrote on NBC Chicago's Facebook page. "There were only about 10 of us on the boat!

And most often, the tour will run — rain or shine — so don't hesitate to bring a raincoat.

"I have certainly [given tours] under thunderstorms and downpours, and I've gotten drenched sometimes," Scheffle said. "I've never had a tour get canceled because no one bought a ticket. There's always someone wanting to come out here in the rain or the cold."

What's the best time of year (or day) to go?

It depends on when exactly your favorite time of the year is, and what you're hoping to see.

For Sargis, it's late summer. "There's this point of time in September when the weather is beautiful, but there's not that summer rush."

There are other times that Chicagoans may want to consider, too.

"St. Patrick's Day Celebration when they dye the river, and any Wednesday or Saturday night [over the summer], watching the fireworks over Lake Michigan , especially if you're local" Sargis said.

During the summer months, Wendella's tours run start as early as 9 a.m., with the day's final tour not ending until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., Scheffle said, "so if you want to come for a ride to see the city lights, you can come late, and it's also beautiful, just a little more difficult to see the colors on the buildings if that's what you want to see."

Laura Pubins, who lives in a suburb outside of Chicago, agrees.

"My favorite one was when we were on a boat at sunset," Pubins wrote to NBC Chicago on Facebook. "It was an awesome new view of the city."

What's the most photogenic spot on the tour?

For Sargis, it's "anything out on Lake Michigan," with the skyline in the background.

On the river though, there's one moment that captures the city best, Scheffle said, no matter what time of day you're taking the trip.

"The best place to take a photo on the 90-minute river tour is when we come up the south branch from Chinatown," Scheffle said. "That's the best place because you get the whole skyline from the south. It's really beautiful."

For locals though, it may not be what you're looking at, so much as how you're looking at it.

"You're looking at [the city] from underneath," said Chicago resident Nick Pappas, 55, who recently found himself on a 90-minute river tour. "It's just a different perspective on the river that you don't get on the street level. As amazing as that sounds, you're only, like, 20 feet down, but it gives you a whole different perspective."

What does the training for a tour guide look like?

According to Sargis, all Wendella tour guides are trained in-house -- and the spots are competitive.

"There's high demand," Sargis said, of the position. "There are more people that want to be tour guides than space available. It's certainly a popular job, and people want to do it." While the tour guide of any given architecture tour isn't made public, many people do request certain ones for private events, Sargis said.

For the tours, there's a general script, with highlights that must be mentioned, Sargis said. But improvisation, along with sharing personal history is encouraged, too.

"All of the tour guides have their own experience in the city, and will add parts of their history in it," Sargis said. "We have a tour guide that is a retired police officer, and he will interject anecdotes form his career. We have a tour guide that's a Vietnam War Veteran, and when we go by the Vietnam War Memorial, he will always discuss the importance of it to him."

For Scheffle, the training included joining multiple tours a week for two weeks and flashcards.

"For a while, I, just drove Uber and Lyft," Scheffle said. "And then, I remembered that I really liked Chicago. I like learning fun facts about it. And there are people in the city that have that as a job -- to tell people fun facts about Chicago and I started looking into tourism jobs in the city."

What's the most common question tour guides get?

Believe it or not, it's not always about The Great Chicago Fire , or Mrs. O'Leary and her cow, at least on Scheffle's tours.

"My favorite thing on the tour that happens is probably when little kids ask questions," Scheffle said. "The common question that a kid will ask, because I talk about the tallest building, second tallest building, third tallest building, a lot of times a kid will ask what's the shortest building in Chicago? Which I don't have a good answer for."

Are you supposed to tip your guide?

"It's up to the discretion of the client," Sargis said. "I would say a lot of our passengers do tip our tour guides."

What's the absolute best part of the tour?

Sure the tour is photogenic, and the city's history is fascinating. And though some may go on the tour to find out what buildings are new, others prefer to think about the old.

"My favorite building to talk about is probably the Board of Trade building," Scheffle said. "Just because I remember walking by it much younger and always, I remember, really being impressed by it, thinking was such a cool big city building."

For a local on the tour, the memories are nice. But a day out on the water in Chicago is just hard to beat.

"It's great. I don't have to work," said Pappas, who has lived in the city for 55 years. "Every time, it's a little treat to go down the river."

Best Architecture Boat Tour in Chicago

I recently had the opportunity to explore some of the best architecture boat tours in Chicago. I found that there is no shortage of options for those interested in taking a closer look at the city’s unique and diverse architectural structures.

One of the top-rated tours is the  Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady . Known for its 1.5-hour journey along the Chicago River, it provides passengers with detailed information on the historical and architectural aspects of various buildings. The tickets start at $54.00, and the tour is widely praised for its knowledgeable guides and panoramic views.

Another compelling option is the  Chicago River Cruise offered by Viator , which includes a VIP Willis Tower Skydeck, trolley tour, and river cruise. This all-in-one package allows tourists to experience Chicago’s skyline from multiple perspectives and conveniently packs multiple attractions into one.

The architectural river cruise offered by Shoreline Sightseeing is an excellent choice, as it has a 90-minute duration and takes visitors through the main branches of the Chicago River, ultimately reaching Lake Michigan. With prices starting at $39 per person, this  Travel Magazine cruise  gives an insight into the city’s architectural evolution and history.

Wendella Boats is quite popular among boat tour enthusiasts as well. They offer various cruises depending on the season and interests of the guests. Some focus on architecture, while others prioritize sightseeing and evening cruises.

City Experiences also provide architecture boat tours, allowing passengers to learn about Chicago’s iconic buildings through expert narration. They collaborate with the Chicago Architecture Foundation Center, ensuring an educational and engaging experience.

Finally,  Viator  features a diverse range of architecture boat tours with varying lengths and focuses. Their offerings can accommodate diverse preferences and budgets, catering to both locals and visitors eager to learn more about Chicago’s architectural marvels.

In summary, Chicago has several options for those looking to explore its architectural wonders via boat tours. From the Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise to the shorter but equally informative tours offered by Wendella Boats, City Experiences, and Viator, there’s a perfect option for every architectural enthusiast.

Experience on Boat

As I boarded the  Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise , I immediately sensed the perfect blend of style and comfort. The climate-controlled lower cabins provided a welcome reprieve from the varying outdoor elements, while the open-plan upper decks offered panoramic views of Chicago’s stunning skyline.

One of the highlights of my experience was the live narration provided by expert docents throughout the tour. Their insightful commentary made it easy to learn about the architectural marvels that define the Windy City.

While enjoying the sights, I appreciated the convenience offered by the full-service bar within the boat. It was delightful to sip on hand-crafted cocktails, carefully selected wines, and refreshing beers as we glided through the city’s impressive waterways. The assortment of snacks kept my hunger at bay during the 90-minute tour.

For added comfort, the boat also had well-maintained restrooms. This thoughtful feature allowed me to focus on marveling at Chicago’s iconic buildings without concern.

Overall, my architectural boat tour of Chicago was enriched not only by the fantastic views and historical insights, but also the array of amenities that made my experience comfortable and memorable.

What to Expect – Landmarks and Buildings

As I embark on a Chicago architecture boat tour, I know I’ll be treated to stunning views of the city’s skyline. The iconic buildings such as the  Willis Tower , the Wrigley Building, and the Tribune Tower are just a few examples of the architectural marvels awaiting me.

Making my way along the Chicago River, I can’t wait to admire the Mies van der Rohe structures that contribute to Chicago’s modernist charm. Additionally, the  Chicago Riverwalk  itself offers a scenic and vibrant place to appreciate these architectural wonders as it winds through the heart of the city.

Chicago’s skyline is dotted with other iconic landmarks such as the historic Navy Pier and bustling Grant Park. As I cruise down the river, I’ll also have the unique opportunity to take in the beauty of Buckingham Fountain, another impressive feature of Grant Park.

While exploring the city by boat, I will experience the ever-evolving cityscape and witness the combination of old and new architecture that makes Chicago so iconic. From 19th-century gems like the Monadnock Building to the towering Willis Tower, the boat tour promises to deliver a captivating view of the city skyline.

Overall, with so many landmarks and buildings to enjoy, experiencing an architecture boat tour in Chicago is a must for anyone wanting a closer look at this distinct and mesmerizing skyline.

What to Know Before You Go

Before embarking on an architecture boat tour in Chicago, there are several important details to be aware of. As someone who has experienced these tours, I want to make sure you’re fully prepared for a fantastic time.

First, let’s talk about admission. The cost of a boat tour can vary depending on the company and whether you’re an adult, child, or part of a group. Typically, adult tickets range from $35 to $50, while child tickets are often priced lower. Keep an eye out for group rates, as well, which can save you money if you’re traveling with a larger party.

The boats used for these architecture tours usually have a mix of seating areas, including upper decks and climate-controlled lower cabins. I recommend choosing a spot on the upper deck for the best views of the buildings along the river. However, if you’re concerned about the weather, the climate-controlled lower cabins provide a comfortable alternative, ensuring you enjoy the tour rain or shine.

It’s also good to know that most of these architecture tour boats are equipped with restrooms and changing tables, making them convenient for families with young children. This way, you can focus on enjoying the stunning views without worrying about any unexpected emergencies.

In summary, when planning your trip to a Chicago architecture boat tour, consider the admission prices, seating areas, and available facilities to ensure a fantastic experience. Now, with this information in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to set sail and explore the incredible architecture that Chicago has to offer.

Tour Schedule and Timing

My favorite architectural boat tour in Chicago has a convenient schedule that frequently offers a variety of tour types catering to different interests. The  Lake & River Architecture Tour  lasts for about 90 minutes, giving me ample time to enjoy the impressive skyline from both upper and lower decks. Boarding for this tour typically begins around 15-20 minutes before the scheduled departure, providing ample time to find a good seat and settle in.

There are also shorter options available, such as the  45 Minute Chicago River Architecture Tour , which focuses solely on the river portion of the tour. I find this shorter tour perfect for when I have limited time or just want a quick overview of the architectural gems along the riverfront.

For those who appreciate a more leisurely experience, the  Chicago Sunset Cruise  is an excellent choice. This voyage lasts about 2 hours and offers magnificent views of the city’s skyline at dusk. Boarding for this cruise also starts around 15-20 minutes before departure.

In addition, there are other themed cruises available, like the Chicago Fireworks Cruise, Beer & BBQ Cruise, Wine & Cheese Cruise, and the St. Patrick’s Day Cruise (both for adults and kids). These cruises offer unique experiences tailored to the theme while showcasing the beautiful architecture of the city.

Regardless of the tour chosen, I always advise checking the schedule and availability for each specific tour in advance, and purchasing tickets online to ensure a smooth boarding process. By doing so, I am able to secure my spot and fully immerse myself in the world of Chicago’s architectural wonders.

The Tour Guides

I recently had the opportunity to experience one of the best architectural boat tours in Chicago. One aspect that stood out to me was the excellent quality of the tour guides. They played a significant role in making the tour both informative and engaging for all the participants.

The tour guides provided live narration throughout the entire journey, which made it easy to follow the evolution of the architectural styles and their historical context. Their knowledge and expertise were truly impressive, as they were able to answer any questions and provide interesting anecdotes about the buildings we passed by.

What also left a positive impression on me was the language support offered during the tour. While the primary language of the tour was English, the guides made sure to accommodate everyone by providing explanations in other languages when needed. This made the tour accessible to a diverse group of people and ensured that nobody was left feeling left out or confused.

The combination of clear, confident, and knowledgeable tour guides, along with live narration and language support, made my experience on the Chicago architecture boat tour truly unforgettable. The tour guides were a key factor in turning a simple sightseeing trip into a memorable learning experience, allowing me to better appreciate the beauty of Chicago’s architectural gems.

Highlights of the Chicago River Cruise

I recently embarked on a wonderful experience on the  Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady , and it was indeed unparalleled. The 90-minute tour left me feeling more knowledgeable, as the expertly trained docents shared fascinating stories about Chicago’s iconic buildings and their architects.

During the cruise, we sailed along the Chicago River, taking in breathtaking views of the city’s majestic architectural marvels. Some of these include the Aon Center, John Hancock Center, Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Wrigley Building, and IBM Building. The docent’s in-depth explanations allowed me to truly appreciate the history and design behind these legendary structures.

Our boat trip not only covered the Chicago River but also ventured out onto Lake Michigan. This part provided us with stunning panoramic views of the city’s skyline and an opportunity to capture some beautiful photos for keepsakes.

Aside from the architecture, one of the highlights for me was witnessing other water activities occurring on the river. I was pleasantly surprised to see people enjoying their time on  Urban Kayaks , exploring the river at their own pace.

The atmosphere aboard  Chicago’s First Lady  was nothing short of pleasant. The staff ensured that our experience was both comfortable and enjoyable. Beverages were available for purchase, and the vessel itself was well-maintained and clean.

Throughout the tour, the docent consistently maintained a confident, knowledgeable, and engaging tone. Their clear and concise narration further enriched my understanding of Chicago’s rich architectural history.
