You Can Now Tell Commonwealth Bank You’re Heading Overseas Online

anguskidman Avatar

Telling your bank you’re going to be travelling is a sensible move, since otherwise transactions from overseas are likely to be flagged as suspicious. Too many of them and your card may be suspended altogether, which is a massive nuisance.

You can notify banks of your travel plans by phone or by visiting a branch, but doing it online is much simpler. I suspect it may also be more reliable. I once informed the Commonwealth in person and then still had my transactions flagged anyway.

St George (and so presumably Westpac as well) have had this for some time, at least a year I’d guess. I’ve used it on numerous occasions.

It would be even cooler if they then auto converted all your currency to the country advised for free 😉

This isn’t really necessary these days. Whilst I cringe at the mis/over-use of “big data” terminology these days, data mining for fraud detection is one of the things that has benefited most from modern data science and practice. It’s pretty good at determining what is a legit overseas holiday and what is a skimmed card. (Flights+Travel Insurance+Airport transaction+Overseas ATM+Giant spending spree at a Bangkok Mall looks very different to Local ATM+Local ATM+Local Dominos Delivery+Petrol Station in Tuscon, Texas+Giant Shopping spree in Texas)

I lol’ed at this article. I thought all banks had this. I’ve been able to do this on ANZ online since 2009 when I told them I was off to Tokyo.

Tips for using your credit card overseas

Your credit card can be a lifeline while you're abroad, so make sure you set it up and use it correctly to take full advantage of what it has to offer.

Many people will tell you that adventure is at the heart of all travel. And while that may be true, you don’t want managing your finances while you’re overseas to become an adventure in itself.

Why (and How) You Should Notify Your Bank Before Traveling

You’ve packed your suitcase, planned your itinerary, and checked into your flight. Surely you’ve done everything you need to prepare for your vacation, right?

There’s one small but crucial step that people often forget before traveling abroad: notifying the bank.

Notify your bank before using a credit or debit card when traveling

Banks do whatever they can to protect you from identity theft. But if you’re not careful, your bank’s eagerness could backfire when you travel. If they spot transactions in an unfamiliar location, your bank may assume your card is being used fraudulently and shut it off.

When you let your bank know that you’re going away, they add a record to your account and share it with their fraud detection system. This prevents your “abnormal” spending patterns from triggering a block on your card.

How to notify your bank of your travel plans

Every bank works a little differently. If you already use online banking, there’s likely an online travel notice where you can enter your destination and the length of your trip. If you’ve got multiple countries on your itinerary, you can specify that as well.

We’ve compiled a list of the online travel notification pages and resources for the top ten banks to make it easy for you:

If you don’t have online banking, call your bank to set up a travel alert on your account. You can also speak with a representative face-to-face in a branch.

Other financial precautions to keep in mind when you travel

Notifying your bank about your travel plans is not the only financial precaution you should take. You should always have copies of your important documents and information, like your bank’s 24-hour telephone and your account numbers. If possible, bring more than one credit or debit card with you and stash one in a safe space outside your wallet if your wallet is lost or stolen .

As with most things related to traveling and security, a little bit of effort goes a long way. Check out our latest tips on travel or sending and securing your money .

commonwealth bank notify overseas travel

Summer. It’s one of the most popular times of the year for Australians to head interstate or overseas to make use of the holiday period, and it's also prime time for planning that international adventure next year.

And according to recently released figures from the Travel 2020: Forecasting the new decade of travel report commissioned by travel website Luxury Escapes, Australians will certainly be keeping up their love affair with overseas travel in the first year of the new decade.

A survey of 20,000 travellers, which was part of the report, found that 2 in 10 Australian travellers are planning on taking an overseas trip of at least one week in 2020, with Canada (21%), USA (19%) and Italy (17%) topping the destination charts.

Sound like someone you know?

Well while it’s difficult not to get wrapped up in planning flights and accommodation, not to mention making sure that passport is still valid, there’s one task travellers will want to add to their pre-flight checklist: letting your bank know you’re going overseas.

RELATED: Australia's top travel money cards for 2019

"There is nothing worse than arriving at your destination and realising you can’t pay for that pool-side cocktail you just ordered. Make sure you notify your bank of your travel dates and destination so that your bank account doesn’t get blocked,” advises UBank CEO, Lee Hatton.

“UBank’s Ultra transaction account allows you to simply enter your trip details through the UBank app in minutes, making the process something you can do en-route to the airport, it’s that simple."

UBank aren’t alone in allowing their customers to alert them of their overseas travel plans via their banking app though.

In fact, they’re part of a growing number of banks allowing adding travel-friendly features to their apps, with 40% of banking apps being tracked in the Mozo database now equipped with a travel notification option.

But if you’re not an app user, how exactly do you go about letting them know you’re heading abroad and when do you actually need to tell them?

Read on below for answers to some of the most common questions to help you prepare for your next international trip, including some of the travel money options you could have at your disposal while abroad.

Why do I need to alert my bank about overseas travel plans?

As Hatton alludes to above, the last thing you want to do is start your holiday with a lock on your travel debit or credit card . This is because your bank is constantly monitoring your card for suspicious activity and purchases made overseas are one of the biggest indicators that something might not be right.

How can I let my bank know that I’m heading overseas?

While each bank is different, one of the easiest options is to jump online and either use your banks mobile app or online banking platform to let them know. Generally it’s as simple as selecting your travel dates and the countries you’re planning to visit. Otherwise you’ll still be able to give them a call if you’d rather speak to someone in person.

When do I need to let them now?

Ideally you’ll want to let your bank know prior to getting on a flight or before your start using your card/s overseas, but the beauty of being able to use a mobile banking app or online banking means you could lock in your travel information while you’re waiting for your flight at the airport.

Do I need to alert my bank if using a prepaid travel card overseas?

While it’s not always necessary to let your bank know about your travel details if you’re just going to be relying on a prepaid travel card , most banks still recommend that you get in contact with them before you leave.

Should I use a prepaid travel card, travel debit card or travel debit card overseas?

There are plenty of travel money options available to Aussies heading abroad, including an everyday debit or credit card , but each come with their various pros and cons.

Prepaid travel cards: These can be a budget-friendly option for travellers going to multiple countries with different currencies because you’ll be able to load up the amount of money you need ahead of time. Just bear in mind that there can be costs involved when loading the card, withdrawing cash and transferring any remaining funds off the card.

Travel debit cards: Many banks, including UBank, are making their bank accounts and linked debit cards more attractive to Aussie travellers with travel-friendly features such as zero foreign ATM fees and 0% foreign exchange fees. The added bonus of using a debit card is that you’ll be spending your own money, so you’re less likely to go over-budget.

Travel credit cards: With the spending protection they offer and added benefits such as complimentary insurances and the ability to earn points, travel credit cards are another popular travel money option. Once again, it’s important to weigh their benefits against costs such as annual fees, foreign exchange fees and, of course, any interest you may need to pay.

ING Newsroom

Have peace of mind on holiday with ing direct’s ‘travel alert’ app feature.

ING DIRECT has made travel planning a little easier with a new ‘Travel Alert’ feature recently introduced on its top-rated Android and iOS app. The ‘Travel Alert’ allows customers who are travelling overseas to help the bank monitor their account activity and keep their money accessible with just a few clicks on their smartphone.

As one of the first mobile banking apps to include this functionality, ING DIRECT customers can quickly and easily notify the bank of their planned travel dates and destinations, eliminating the need to phone the bank’s 24/7 Contact Centre.

Lisa Claes, Executive Director, Customer Delivery at ING DIRECT, said: “We want our customers to have comfort in knowing that their money will be both closely monitored and readily available while they are overseas, which is why we introduced this simple notification functionality to our app.

“We all understand the need to notify our bank of travel plans, but for many of us it just isn’t top of mind while preparing for a trip.  This new feature delivers to ING DIRECT customers more control over the security and management of their Orange Everyday transaction account so they can enjoy their holiday without unnecessary money stresses.”

This new feature can be activated up to one month before travel and complements the existing ‘card on hold’ functionality that can also be activated instantly through the bank’s award-winning app.

What currencies can I load on the CommBank Travel Money Card?

The CommBank Travel Money Card supports 13 major currencies including:

  • United States dollar
  • Great British pound
  • Australian dollar
  • Japanese yen
  • New Zealand dollar
  • Hong Kong dollar
  • Canadian dollar
  • Singapore dollar
  • Vietnamese dong
  • Chinese renminbi
  • Emirati dirham

There are no fees involved when you load funds into a foreign currency wallet, transfer funds between currency wallets on the card, or spend money in a currency that isn't loaded or supported by your card. Instead, a retail foreign exchange rate determined by CommBank is applied at the time of conversion. You can find the foreign exchange rates on the CommBank website or on the CommBank app under "Tools & Calculators" and "Foreign Exchange Toolkit".

Your currencies will be locked in at the bank's retail foreign exchange rate applicable on the day your transfer or payment is processed. When loading or reloading, the money will be available the same day for transfers from CommBank transaction accounts and up to two business days for BPAY transactions.

What if I want to spend money in a different currency to the ones loaded on my card?

When spending money in a currency that is unsupported or insufficiently loaded on your card, the next available currency balance in your currency order will be used. You may customise your currency order through NetBank or by calling +61 1300 660 700. Otherwise, the following default currency order applies.

Default currency order:

To illustrate, when paying for a US$50 lunch in Los Angeles, it turns out that you only have US$21 in your US dollar wallet. Instead of declining the transaction, your card is debited in Euros instead, since you have sufficient Euros in your account. CommBank's prevailing retail foreign exchange rate is applied to convert your Euros into US dollars.

Where can I use my Commonwealth Bank Travel Money Card

The CommBank Travel Money Card enjoys the worldwide acceptance of the Visa network and can be used in-store, at ATMs, online, over the phone and by mail order. However certain merchants and financial institutions may not accept the card, including stores where Visa prepaid cards are not accepted or where merchants process transactions manually.

Features of the CommBank Travel Money Card

When you apply for a CommBank Travel Money Card, you can look forward to the following benefits and features:

  • Locked-in exchange rates. When you load funds on your card, they'll be locked in at the exchange rate you got when you loaded your card. This will give you peace of mind and help you manage your budget since you don't have to deal with fluctuating exchange rates. Foreign exchange rates are available on the CommBank website or in the CommBank app by following "Tools & calculators" to the "Foreign Exchange Toolkit".
  • Additional card. Your free backup card ensures that you'll still be able to access your money should the first card be lost, damaged or stolen.
  • Smartphone app. Enjoy the modern convenience of currency planning from your smartphone with the CommBank app. Monitor your expenses, convert currencies and reload funds while on the go.
  • Worldwide ATM alliance. The robust Visa alliance ensures that you will be able to access cash almost anywhere in the world.
  • Concierge service. Enjoy the luxury of personal concierge services when you need dinner reservations, air tickets, accommodation or concert tickets booked for you.
  • Purchase security insurance. If an item purchased on your card gets lost, stolen or damaged in the first 90 days, your card insurance coverage ensures that it will be repaired or replaced for free.

How much does the CommBank Travel Money Card cost?

This table lists the costs associated with this card and when you'll be charged them.

How to use the CommBank Travel Money Card

Follow these simple steps to start using your CommBank Travel Money Card:

  • Activating the card. For cards purchased in-branch, your two cards have already been automatically activated. For cards purchased online via NetBank, including replacement or reissued cards, you will need to activate your cards online. In any case, you should set up a PIN for each card by logging in to NetBank, going to a CommBank branch or calling the Travel Money Customer Service Centre at 1300 660 700, or +61 2 9374 0609 from overseas.
  • Loading funds on the card. Different currencies can be loaded on your card at the time of purchase, which will be subject to the bank's foreign exchange rates at that time. When reloading the card, funds will be accepted in Australian dollars and converted into your primary currency according to your currency order. The applicable exchange rate is taken on the day your payment is processed, which is instant when paying cash in-branch or transferring funds via NetBank from a CommBank transaction account and up to two business days when using BPAY.When reloading via BPAY, you may only load one currency at a time. You will need to wait for your first BPAY transaction to be completed before changing your currency order and making another transfer to that primary currency. Each load and reload must be more than the equivalent of AUD$1 and less than AUD$100,000.
  • Managing your online account. You can manage your account online at NetBank or on your smartphone's CommBank app. You can view your balances and transaction history, transfer currencies within the account, reload funds, and make real-time fund transfers to and from eligible CommBank accounts. You can also change your PIN and currency order, set up SMS alerts and lock or unlock your card for security reasons when necessary.

What do I do if I return home with foreign currency remaining on the card?

Who do i contact if my card is lost, stolen or damaged.

Report loss or theft immediately by calling 1300 660 700 or +61 2 9374 0609 when overseas. Similarly, if you suspect your card has been subject to unauthorised use, notify the bank immediately by calling 13 22 21 or +61 2 9374 0609 when overseas.

How to apply for a CommBank Travel Money Card

For existing CommBank customers with NetBank accounts, ordering is a simple online process which involves logging into NetBank. Your card will then arrive in the mail in under six business days. If you are not an existing CommBank customer, you may get your card straight away by heading into any CommBank branch. Bring your Australian passport or driver's licence for identification purposes.

Are there any eligibility requirements?

While you do not need to be an existing Commonwealth bank customer, you must be more than 14 years old and satisfy customer identification requirements. You will have to register with NetBank when purchasing the card. Also, you are limited to only having five active Travel Money Cards at any one time.

The CommBank Travel Money Card offers up to 13 major currencies and fee-free loads and reloads. Make sure to factor the card issue, replacement fees and ATM withdrawal fees when comparing your options. Thanks for your comment and I hope you are doing well. You can use the travel money card in Australia. The card can be used everywhere Mastercard is accepted. There can be a fee if you are paying in a currency not loaded onto your card so be sure to nominate AUD as your preferred currency when making purchases and do cash withdrawals at CommBank ATMs.

Hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.

I’m in USA. I’m drawing cash from ATM. Do I draw it as Credit or Savings?

October 24, 2019

Hi Marlene,

Thanks for reaching out to Finder. When using the Commonwealth Bank Travel Money Card review, you would select the credit option. As added information, the maximum value of purchases per day is AUD 7,500 or its foreign currency equivalent. The maximum amount you can withdraw from ATMs per day is AUD 2,500 or its foreign currency equivalent. However, most ATM operators have a limit on how much you can withdraw from an ATM per transaction which may be less than the Commonwealth Bank’s maximum. You may want to check out that specific information before withdrawing.

Hope this helps and feel free to write back, we’re here to help.

Cheers, Nikki

Thanks for getting in touch! As mentioned on our page above, there is no fee when you are transferring between currency wallets on the card, Instead, a retail foreign exchange rate determined by CommBank is applied at the time of conversion. You can find the foreign exchange rates on the CommBank website or on the CommBank app under “Tools & Calculators” and “Foreign Exchange Toolkit”.

Hope this helps!

With my CBC travelcard is there any withdrawal fee to withdraw Aus dollars while in Australia (currency on card is Aus dollars)

September 11, 2019

Thanks for getting in touch! The Commonwealth Bank Travelcard doesn’t have any withdrawal charge at any Commonwealth Bank or BankWest ATM in Australia when you withdraw in Australian dollars. Hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.

Important information about this website

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.

commonwealth bank notify overseas travel

Any travel agency recommend for help foreign citizen register the notification of arrival for migration legislation? I already booked the airbnb apartment during this coming World cup 2018. But the host refuse us to register the notification of arrival. As i noticed that foreign citizen is unable to register by our self. To solve this issue, i need find the local travel agency to help us register of notification of arrival near by at Paveletskaya.

Thanks in advance for your advise and reply.

' class=

Have you checked any of the official sites? I know GENERALLY one can both get required invites and then if needed get formal registration thru some 3rd party companies...for, of course, a "nominal fee"...BUT, WC is I think a whole different deal...can't imagine you are the only one with this issue...

' class=

you may break any 10 days of staying by visiting another city, you do not need a reg. if your stay in one city is less than 10 days.

also you if book a cheapest hotel for one day, it will stamp you reg.

Where are you getting 10 days from...as far as I know it is 7 business days. I would also STRONGLY advise folks take into account how some posters here under the guise of being helpful seem to be abusing the TA rules of not using forums to drum up business. Especially when some of the “advice” is questionable.

Travel hacks for your Moscow business trip

commonwealth bank notify overseas travel

Moscow has three main international airports: Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo. From all of them can you can get to the city via the Aeroexpress Train or taxi.

Please follow the signs to get to the Aeroexpress Station. If you have any trouble, go to the nearest Information Stand – the attendants there speak English, and surely will be able to assist you. The Aeroexpress Trains will take you to one of Moscow’s train stations, depending on which airport you leave from. Travel time is about 30 minutes. Tickets cost 340 rubles (7 euros or $10), and you can buy them from a vending machine just before train departure (credit cards are accepted), or to save time, buy your tickets in advance from the Aeroexpress website.

If you prefer, you can grab a taxi. You will need to order your vehicle in advance; otherwise, you run the risk of becoming a victim of the privateer taxi drivers, who will aggressively offer you their services as soon as you leave the arrivals area. Ignore them.

http://www.womantaxi.ru/ (female taxis – drivers are women)

http://www.moscowminitaxi.ru (possibility of renting a car with a driver for a day or longer)

Bankcards and money

The official currency of Russia is the ruble, and payment in other currencies is not possible. You can change your money into rubles right at the airport, but not at very favorable rates. If you need cash to pay for your taxi (the average price from the airport to the city center is 800–1,200 rubles (17–25 euros or $ 24-35), and credit cards are not accepted), then change a small amount at the airport. After that, exchange the rest at a more favorable rate in any bank in the city. In Moscow, almost everywhere you can pay by credit card, with the exception of some small shops, subway ticket offices (!) and most museums. However, it is always best to have cash in your wallet, because if a bankcard terminal is not working at a store, you will learn this only when you reach the checkout counter: posting announcements about such problems is not done in Moscow. In addition, if the seller does not have change for a large bill, he/she will likely ask you to solve this problem yourself, in which case you will have to resort to using your bankcard.

Getting around in the city

Ideally, if your office and hotel are located not far from each other in the city center, then you can walk between the two places. The territory of Moscow is huge, and trying to get to faraway places on foot is impossible. Alternatives are the Metro (subway) and taxis. Pros of the former are the speed and relative cheapness, cons are the intolerable stuffiness in the railcars and the huge number of passengers. The pros of the latter mode are obvious, but all these are nullified in monstrous Moscow traffic jams during rush hour. Rule number one: plan your meetings in advance and choose the appropriate times and modes of transportation.

By the way, along with the “official” taxis, people in Moscow often use private “motorists.” You can flag down a car anywhere in the city, just go to the roadside and raise your hand in a characteristic gesture. The average price in the city is about 300 rubles (6 euros or $9). Keep in mind that when you travel with a private “motorist,” you are responsible for your own safety. Phone numbers of emergency services are given in the box.

Translation problems

Contrary to the opinion of Muscovites, in Moscow very few people can speak normal English. Yes, they will be able to explain to you how to get somewhere in English, but not much more than that. If you will need to converse a lot, it is better to use the services of a personal translator. This service is provided by translation bureaus and specialized agencies. Here we list some of them:

Where to work

Moscow has no shortage of restaurants for holding business meetings. However, as far as good work spaces go, the city offers limited opportunities. If you need to rent an office for a few days, with all the necessary equipment, then take advantage of the co-working centers. Recently, this concept has gained a lot of popularity in Moscow, so it will not be hard to find something suitable: for example, a strict office for a serious meeting in the business district of the MIBC Moscow-City, or the so-called creative space for creative work near a park.

By the way, socket types C and F of 220 V are used in Russia, so do not forget the 220-volt adapter for your laptop.

Emergency numbers

In Russia, a common three-digit number system is used to call different services in an emergency: Ambulance – 103, Police – 102, rescuers and firefighters – 101, 112.
