How to Use Honda Cruise Control: A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you a proud owner of a Honda vehicle? If so, you may have noticed the cruise control feature in your car. Cruise control is a convenient feature that allows you to maintain a constant speed while driving. Whether you’re going on a long road trip or simply want to relax during your daily commute, Honda cruise control can make your driving experience more enjoyable and stress-free.

In this article, we will provide you with a comprehensive guide on how to use Honda cruise control. We’ll walk you through the steps, explain the different functions, and address common questions and concerns. So, let’s get started and learn how to make the most of this fantastic feature in your Honda vehicle.

Step 1: Activate Cruise Control

The first step in using Honda cruise control is to activate the feature. To do this, follow these simple steps:

Here’s a YouTube video that demonstrates the process of activating cruise control in a Honda Civic:

To activate cruise control, locate the cruise control buttons on your Honda’s steering wheel. These buttons are typically marked with symbols such as ‘SET,’ ‘RES,’ and ‘CANCEL.’ Press the ‘ON/OFF’ button to turn on the cruise control system.

Once the cruise control system is activated, you will notice a confirmation light on your dashboard. This light indicates that cruise control is ready to be set at your desired speed.

Step 2: Set Your Desired Speed

Now that you have activated cruise control, it’s time to set your desired speed. Follow these steps:

To set the speed, accelerate your Honda to your desired cruising speed. Once you have reached the desired speed, press the ‘SET’ button on the steering wheel. This action will engage cruise control and maintain your current speed.

It’s essential to note that cruise control does not automatically adjust your speed according to traffic conditions. You are responsible for maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles on the road and adjusting your speed manually when necessary.

Step 3: Adjusting Cruise Control Settings

Now that you have set your desired speed, you can make adjustments to your Honda cruise control settings. Here’s how:

If you wish to increase your cruising speed, press the ‘RES’ (resume) button. This action will cause your Honda to accelerate gradually until it reaches the previously set speed.

Conversely, if you want to reduce your cruising speed, press the ‘SET’ button. Your Honda will decelerate to a lower speed. Alternatively, you can tap the brake pedal lightly to disengage cruise control temporarily.

You can also cancel cruise control altogether by pressing the ‘CANCEL’ button. This action will deactivate the system, and your Honda will return to manual driving mode.

Step 4: Exiting Cruise Control

When you no longer need to use cruise control, it’s essential to exit the system correctly. Here’s how to do it:

To exit cruise control, simply tap the brake pedal or press the ‘CANCEL’ button on the steering wheel. Either action will disengage cruise control, and your Honda will return to manual driving mode.

It’s crucial to note that cruise control should not be used in hazardous driving conditions, such as heavy traffic, slippery roads, or inclement weather. Always prioritize safety and use cruise control responsibly.

Cruise stopped working

  • Add to quote

Cruise button when pressed does not light green. Cruise is not responsive and stopped working a year ago. Other than this, van drives beautifully. What could be wrong and how can I fix it?

cruise control honda odyssey button

Most common cause is the brake light switch but could be something else, too. I forget how that system works. Is there a light that comes on when the cruise is turned on and then another light that comes on when you set the cruise control to hold a speed?

Yes and Yes. But now, no lights turn on despite my attempts at pressing the switch on and off or setting cruise. I remember the transmission lever behind the steering wheel used to get stuck and I replaced the switch at the brake (switch senses brake being depressed so the transmission can be engaged) to fix that problem. Replacing the switch helped but I dont know if cruise got disabled because of that.

Check fuse #6 in the driver's side fuse box. The indicator light in the switch should light up if the CC circuit is getting power. However, the bulb could be burned out. If the fuse tests good, you need to meter the switch to make sure CC controller is getting power. Once you have confirmed that the CC controller is getting power, you can test the CC components e.g. brake light switch, steering wheel switches, actuator, etc. Dave

I agree with Dave. If the power light isn’t coming on then you need to figure that out first. Fuse is the first place to go.

I just changed out a bad switch that caused the same no light at the switch, no function of cruise control.

I went and checked again.. and want to make an important correction to my comments above. The cruise button on the left side of the steering wheel on the dash when pressed, does light up. The cruise rocking switch does not turn on the cruise functionality. When rocked to turn on, nothing happens.

Looks like there is only one brake light switch.. that also allows transmission to engage, correct?. I replaced that switch last year and it is possible that the loss of cruise control coincided with that.

The two things that would be most suspect are the pedal position switch (it has two switches in it) and the clockspring behind the steering wheel. To determine which it is you'll need a wiring diagram and some troubleshooting. http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/Wd/DownloadPdf?id=105977

Re: pedal position switch, "it has two switches in it" <-- how do I check if anything wrong with this?. I bent down and looked at the switch, couldnt find anything wrong at a cursory glance. When I press the brake pedal, it seems to disengage the switch and make a clicking sound [that allows me to change the transmission from Park to Drive]. I see 4 or 5 wires on this switch so you may be right in that it has two switches. I am trying to figure out the other part of the switch, if and how it controls the cruise control.

The number of wires is important. I think it's four but let me know if that's different. Use the diagram above. One switch is normally open and the other is normally closed. If I were testing the switch I'd use a test light or multi-meter. There should be 12 volts on both pins 1 (Lt Grn) and pin 4 (Gry) when the key is on and the Cruise switch is on. If you have 12 volts on pin 1 but nothing on pin 4 then the switch is bad. Pins 2 and 3 (white/yellow and white/black) are for the brake lights. It looks like the cruise control unit does get a signal from pin 3 but likely only for disconnect. Pins 1 and 4 are the pins you're going to be concerned about. If the switch checks out with voltage on both pins 1 and 4 then the next thing I'd look at would be the cable reel (also called a clockspring) behind the steering wheel. It's not uncommon for those to break internally.

How do I perform a continuity check? How do I test if the switch is working to spec?. I have seen a youtube video where the commentator fixed the problem by attaching a one cent coin on the brake pedal. I had recently changed the brake pedal switch and suspect this was the moment I lost the cruise.

The penny trick was probably a hack for properly adjusting the switch. To test the continuity, disconnect the plug and connect a multimeter (set to ohms range) to the appropriate terminals. This can be done in the car, but would probably be easier with the switch removed. Dave

Agreed. How do we adjust that switch activated by the brake pedal ? Id like to do it the right way and obviously this is the way to go, if its possible. The switch seems spring loaded with a pointed end that gets depressed. I dont recall any ability for adjustment

From the manual: Screw in the brake pedal position switch until its plunger is fullly pressed (threaded end touching the pad on the pedal arm). Then back off the switch 3/4 turn to make 0.3mm (0.01in.) of clearance between the threaded end and pad. Tighten the locknut firmly. Connect the brake pedal position switch connector. Make sure that the brake lights go off when the pedal is released. Honestly, unless someone has already messed with it it's not going to be out of adjustment. You need to electrically test the switch. I wouldn't bother with a continuity test as the ohm meter sends such a small amount of current that even a bad switch can indicate good. I'd do a voltage test with a test light with it in the car and plugged in. The next best thing is checking it with a volt meter. If you start unplugging and plugging it in and jostling it around you may fix it, if only temporarily while troubleshooting it, and not know it and be fooled into thinking the switch isn't the problem when it actually is. I described how to test it above.

I realized that I didnt seat the new switch properly when I replaced the defective switch. thanks for that paragraph from the manual. I dont find a way to screw the switch or turn it.. it seems to be a press fit and despite pushing it all the way in, it seems to have a lot of play, for example I could easily pull it out of position, nothing seems to be holding it in position which is very odd. I will go and look at the area again carefully to identify the parts mentioned.

I looked at the brake switch carefully and noticed that it wasn't seated properly. I pushed it in and it had a nearly 1cm of play. Yikes!. That could explain why the cruise was not working. I will check if this solved the problem and post my update later today.

Yep, with the switch that far out of adjustment, the CC would think the brake is applied and so it would never engage. Were your brake lights on all the time? The switch should screw in and be secured by a locknut. Was the new switch OE? Dave

A critical component such as this, Id buy only OE. Interestingly the part you are referring to (#3 and #11 in attached image) is not compatible with my EXL-NAV 03 Odyssey according to the bernardi web page notification upon cursor hover and mouse click. What is compatible is the part #15 in the image and it does not have the nut. It is a press fit.

I missed the fact that you replaced the switch once before. I'm with Dave, did you put in an OEM switch? If not, most of the aftermarket electrical stuff is junk and you're lucky to get a year out of it if it works at all.

Obviously a mid generation production change. Honda does that a lot. That's why it's so important for folks to put their year and trim level in posts for help. A 1999 Odyssey is a lot different than a 2003 Odyssey even though they look almost identical.

I didnt install it right. The right way to install it and I just found out is to press the switch all the way in and turn it about a quarter turn. Installed right, the cruise works perfectly. Thanks for all your inputs.
