Best Bahamas cruise tips for first-timers and repeat visitors alike

Melinda Crow

While many seasoned cruisers (like me!) return over and over, the Bahamas are often a destination of firsts.

In my case, this collection of over 3,000 islands and uninhabited sandy cays was part of my first cruise and my introduction to snorkeling. The first time I went scuba diving with sharks was from the capital city of Nassau, which was the first place I ate conch.

If you're contemplating taking a Bahamas cruise for the first time (or planning a return visit), I can assure you that you'll have tons of fun in, on and under the turquoise waves as well as eating, drinking, playing and exploring shoreside. But if you're nervous about making the most of your cruise vacation, let me offer you my best Bahamas cruise tips for booking, packing, staying safe and enjoying the islands.

Take advantage of an abundance of short Bahamas cruise options

cruise to bahamas stops

Many Bahamas cruises are short — between two and five nights. Short cruises are perfect as weekend getaways, add-ons to land-based vacations, trial runs for new cruisers and even "obligation" trips with people you don't want to travel with for a full week (family reunion with the in-laws, anyone?).

If you're looking for a longer cruise to the Bahamas, never fear, you can find them, particularly from non-Florida ports or on cruises that combine stops in the Bahamas with Caribbean ports of call.

Drive to your departure port to save money

Sailing from a port close to your home can save money, and you can find Bahamas cruises departing from numerous cities around the U.S. Look at Galveston, Texas; Baltimore; Bayonne, New Jersey; New Orleans; Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; and even New York City, as well as the popular Florida cruise ports. Just don't forget to include port parking fees in your calculations, as they may be higher than you expect.

Pick a cruise based on ship, not itinerary

If you're looking for my top Bahamas cruise booking tip, I'd say to choose a trip based on the cruise line and ship, not the itinerary. Most Bahamas sailings visit the same ports ( Nassau , Freeport) and the cruise line private islands all provide amazing beach days.

That means you should look for a ship you think you'll enjoy, so your fun extends across every minute of the trip, not just when you are in port.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Water-loving families can continue their wet fun on board ships with slides, raft rides, splash zones and multiple pools. Shop Carnival Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and most Disney Cruise Line ships . Those same cruise lines work well for couples seeking a megaresort atmosphere.

Young couples and singles craving a not-your-grandmother's-cruise-ship vibe should explore Virgin Voyages , which stops at Bimini on most of its Caribbean cruises, or Celebrity Cruises , which offers short sailings to Key West, Florida, and the Bahamas. And for the Parrot Head partiers among us (you know who you are), don't forget the newly rebranded Margaritaville at Sea cruise line which sails from the Port of Palm Beach in Florida every other day to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island.

Pack for fun in the sun and sea — without the burn

cruise to bahamas stops

The sun in the Bahamas is brutal. Return home sans the sunburn by packing UV protective clothes like rash guards, hats and cover-ups, then use reef-friendly sunscreen on all exposed skin. Consider wearing a shirt or rash guard when snorkeling or swimming, so your back doesn't burn. Reapply your sunscreen every few hours, or more often than you think you need to.

Pack double the swimwear, so you have a dry suit to wear while you wait for the other to dry. If you're an avid snorkeler (or hope to become one on your cruise), you might want to bring your own gear for a better fit and to avoid rental fees.

Bring your passport

If your cruise starts and ends at the same U.S. port, you don't technically need a passport to cruise . You can set sail to the Bahamas with only a certified birth certificate and a valid state ID. My advice is to bring a passport anyway.

Applying for a passport may seem like a lot of hassle and extra money for a short hop to the Bahamas, but it's a lot less hassle than managing the chaos if something like an accident, illness or mechanical problem with the ship leaves you stranded in a foreign country without a passport.

Invest in a cheap digital camera

There's not much need to lug around expensive camera gear in the Bahamas, but an inexpensive, compact, waterproof digital camera might keep you from losing or damaging your far more expensive smartphone.

Sure, you can buy housings that allow you to take your phone underwater, but as a long-time snorkeler and diver I can tell you it's incredibly easy to get caught up in an exciting moment and let go of (and lose track of) a camera in the water. Do you really want that to happen to your new iPhone, or would the loss of a $69 (or even a $400) camera hurt a little less?

Plan your island time in advance

cruise to bahamas stops

You can make the most of your time ashore by planning. Book shore excursions in advance (either through the ship or through third-party operators). Often, just knowing what your options are will save time standing on the pier wondering what you should do. For example, Nassau is a walk-off port if you want to shop, but pretty much everything else you'd want to do there requires transportation. There's even less to do within walking distance of the pier in Freeport.

You'll find there are plenty of last-minute tour offers at the docks, but handing your money to unvetted tour operators can be a risk that might lead to a fun adventure or to a sad tale of things that went wrong on your cruise.

Be aware of your surroundings

You may hear tales of crime and even violence against tourists in the Bahamas, but most crimes reported in the islands are pickpocketing and drug-related problems. The best way to avoid theft is to maintain a heightened awareness of your surroundings and travel with clothing and bags that deter nimble fingers. Obviously, decline any offers of drugs.

On my first cruise to Nassau (decades ago), my two friends and I were all young and naive. We were offered marijuana within steps of departing the ship. We thought the dude wanted to give us shell necklaces to welcome us, but his overtures quickly turned into a conversation about the necklace being a bonus available only to his weed customers. Just stopping to talk to him could have ended badly for us; a bit of wariness regarding strangers in port who approach you goes a long way toward enjoying a fun and safe cruise.

Top Bahamas FAQs

When’s the best time to take a cruise to The Bahamas?

Celebrity Cruises sails to The Bahamas year-round. The peak season is from December to early spring, while May and June tend to be wetter. Rain tends to fall in the late afternoon in short, sharp showers, so this shouldn’t be a deterrent from traveling.

Hurricane season is typically from June to November although, fortunately, The Bahamas is rarely affected by hurricanes. There are many systems in place to detect any hurricane weather along your route, ensuring your ship’s captain and crew will be able to chart a path around any bad weather or make modifications to the itinerary to keep you safe. Celebrity’s state-of-the-art ships are built for stability, keeping movement in rough seas to a minimum.

See our blog post about cruising during hurricane season for more information.

Do I need a passport?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

Not all Bahamas cruises require a passport. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to The Bahamas or Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate are sufficient.

On Bahamas cruises that call at other Caribbean ports, you can enter with your U.S. passport book, passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST), or an enhanced driver’s license. See our blog post for more information.

What should I pack for a cruise to The Bahamas?

When packing for a cruise to The Bahamas, you’ll need clothing for a warm, sometimes humid climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock.

If you book a snorkeling excursion, all gear will be provided. If there are places where you may want to snorkel independently, consider bringing your own equipment.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What are some things I can do on my cruise?

The Bahamas offers a range of activities to enjoy during your cruise. In Nassau, you could relax on beautiful beaches on Pearl Island or the Blue Lagoon. Join a watercolor painting class, snorkel over coral reefs, and even swim with friendly pigs. Learn about Nassau’s history, and sample conch fritters, the local specialty. If you’re traveling with kids, you could spend a day exploring Aquaventure waterpark at Atlantis Paradise Island and its waterslides, pools, river rapids, and vast aquarium.

In Bimini, you could relax on a pristine beach in an exclusive resort and swim in the warm, crystal-clear water. If you prefer a more active day, you could hand-feed wild stingrays, swim among reef sharks, or snorkel over the wreck of the Sapona, now colonized by tropical fish.

Perfect Day at CocoCay, our award-winning private island, is the place where you can be as adventurous or as indulgent as you wish. Fly down the tallest waterslide in North America, or whizz along a zipline. Take in the views from 450 feet above the shore in a helium balloon. Enjoy swimming in the largest freshwater lagoon pool in the Caribbean. Or elevate your experience with a luxurious private cabana, either on the powdery beach at Chill Island or perched directly over the aquamarine water.

How long are Bahamas cruises?

Cruises to The Bahamas are three to six nights long. On the shortest Bahamas cruises, you will have a day to explore Nassau and a full day to enjoy the many amenities of your Celebrity Cruises ship.

Other short cruises include Bimini and CocoCay, or a different combination of Key West and Nassau. Slightly longer voyages of five nights visit Key West, Bimini, and CocoCay. On a six-night voyage from Tampa, meanwhile, you will visit Nassau and Bimini and have three full days to enjoy the luxurious amenities of the ship.

What ports do you visit?

We visit three ports in The Bahamas: Nassau, Bimini, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island.

What can I do on board the ship?

Celebrity’s luxurious ships offer a wealth of activities. Bask by the shimmering pool, join a yoga or meditation class in the Fitness Center, or indulge in a blissful treatment in the Spa.

You’ll find a wide variety of places to dine, with menus crafted by our Michelin-starred chef. Enjoy BBQ specialties at the al fresco Lawn Club Grill (on Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Reflection) and marvel at the antics of the 3D characters who “prepare” your dinner in Le Petit Chef.

Enjoy the ship’s upscale bars and lounges, from the lively Martini Bar, where skilled mixologists entertain as they prepare your cocktail, to the beautiful Sunset Bar, a popular gathering place for pre-dinner drinks with friends, with infinite views of the blue ocean. You’ll find live music all over the ship late into the night, whether you want to dance, listen to jazz, or attend a Broadway-quality show in the Theatre.

Elevate your experience on board by choosing The Retreat , where you’ll luxuriate in a beautiful suite and have access to an exclusive lounge and the exceptional Luminae at the Retreat restaurant.

All Cruise Ports in the Bahamas

The Bahamas cruise ports are the most active in the Caribbean region because they receive more than 3 million visitors a year.

The Bahamas geographically are in the Atlantic Ocean and not the Caribbean Sea. But eastern Caribbean cruises make the Bahamas a common stop because they are so close to Florida embarkation ports such as Miami.

The islands also attract cruises just to the Bahamas from ports all along the U.S. Atlantic coast that last as briefly as three or four days.

Anyone planning to visit the Bahamas via cruise has plenty of options from which to choose. The Bahamas have more private ports than any other destination in or near the Caribbean—seven in total.

Nassau on New Providence island is the dominant port in the Bahamas. It is followed by Freeport on Grand Bahama island. Cruise lines also visit these private islands:

Quick Travel Tips

Following are brief profiles of the Bahamas cruise ports.

Nassau Cruise Port

Nassau on New Providence island is the capital of the Bahamas .

Cruise visitors will walk right off their ships, through the cruise terminal and into one of the largest tourism districts for tourists in the entire Caribbean region. We could easily spend the entire afternoon there on our visits.

Major hotels and resorts are mostly concentrated at Cable Beach and the more expensive Paradise Island. Paridise is a second small island of 685 acres that is connected to New Providence by two bridges.

Attractions. Besides the tourism district and Cable Beach, major attractions include Blue Lagoon Island, which is 20 minutes away by sailboat and has beaches, snorkeling, diving and swimming with the dolphins.

Nassau golf courses include Cable Beach Resorts Golf Club and South Ocean Golf and Beach Resort. The Nassau Botanical Gardens and Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre will appeal to nature lovers.

Local historical attractions include Fort Charlotte, which is the largest on the islands, and the smaller forts Montagu or Fincastle. The Queen’s Staircase of Sixtysix Steps, right by Fort Fincastle, is a popular tourist attraction that was hand carved out of solid rock. Fincastle and Queen’s Staircase are a 15-minute walk from the tourism district.

Beaches. Cruise visitors will arrive at the Nassau port on the northeastern side of the island near Atlantis. If the cruise line offers any beach excursion, it is likely a visit to the five-mile long Atlantis beach.

The Atlantis towers are visible from the docks. Note the bridge to the east that crosses from New Providence Island to Paradise Island.

Junkanoo Beach, also known as the Western Esplanade, is within walking distance of the cruise docks. This area joins the beaches at Arawak Cay and Long Wharf. Take a right as you walk out of the cruise terminal.

The beaches here are popular with both tourists and locals. It has benches for sitting and viewing the ships that arrive or leave the harbor. Horseback and pony rides also are available.

Bahamas photo

Shopping and Restaurants. Nassau has plenty of duty-free shopping. Popular shopping destinations include the Straw Markets, which showcase local arts and crafts. They are located a few blocks from the cruise terminals. Visitors just need to turn right outside of the terminal and walk only a few minutes to reach them.

Paradise Island has shops concentrated at Marina Village, Crystal Court (inside Atlantis Royal Towers) and The Craft Centre, which features local artisans.

Bay Street is the dominant shopping area and is lined with many shops, cafes and restaurants. It is easily accessible from the cruise docks and runs parallel to the waterfront. Festival Place shopping is located right by the docks, and Straw Market is nearby on Bay Street.

The Freeport cruise port is on Grand Bahama Island. It is the second most popular cruise destination in the Bahamas after Nassau and Paradise Island.

It is one of the northernmost islands of The Bahamas, the closest to Florida and is known for two areas in particular – the resort center at Freeport and the suburb of Lucaya.

Freeport is the dominant city on Grand Bahama with both its own cruise terminal and the Grand Bahama Island International Airport. Lucaya also has a cruise terminal and is a major hub for cruise ships, shopping, restaurants, hotels and entertainment.

Attractions. Attractions include Lucayan National Park, which has one of the world’s largest underwater cave systems, and Peterson Cay National Park, a protected area a mile offshore with coral reefs and opportunities for picnicking, snorkeling and scuba diving.

Another favorite attraction is Pinder’s Point Lighthouse, the birds and nature trails at Rand Nature Center or the Garden of the Groves, which has more than 10,000 species of plants and animals. Visitors can swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Experience Lagoon.

Shopping. Shoppers will find plenty to browse and buy at the 12-acre Port Lucaya Marketplace or at the International Bazaar, one of the oldest shopping areas in Freeport. It’s a common shore excursion about a 20-minute drive from the cruise terminal.

We spent the afternoon there on a rainy day and found plenty to do, although it isn’t as large as the Nassau district. It also has regular entertainment and can fill several hours of time during a shore excursion visit.

Golfers will be able to use two courses – The Lucayan Golf Course or The Reef Golf Course.

Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay is Disney’s private port and provides activities such as snorkeling, boating, swimming and sunbathing. Amenities include:

Coco Cay Coco Cay, just south of Freeport, is a private island owned by Royal Caribbean. Amenities include: Hiking, parasailing and kayaking Waverunners, the most popular activity Caylana’s Aqua Park, a floating playground Seaside barbecues Snorkeling among sunken wrecks This private island doesn’t have any restaurants or shops, but the private beach offers mixed and frozen drinks. Great Stirrup Cay

Norwegian Cruise Line owns Great Stirrup Cay, which is north of Nassau. Amenities include:

Half Moon Cay

Half Moon Cay is farthest south and east of any Bahamas cruise port. Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Lines use it more than other cruise lines. Amenities include:

Princess Cays

Princess Cays is a 40-acre resort owned by Princess Cruises on the island of Eleuthera. The island is 100 miles long and only two miles wide. Amenities include:

The 6 Best Cruises for Exploring the Bahamas

Only 110 miles off the florida coast, the bahamas is one of the easiest caribbean destinations to reach on a cruise. these are our top picks for sailings among this island paradise..

With hundreds of islands to visit, Bahamas cruises are filled with beautiful scenery, mesmerizing marine life, and relaxing beach escapes.

Cruises to the Bahamas are filled with sun, soft sands, and the opportunity to dip your toes in a warm and seductive crystal blue sea. The 700-island archipelago is the kind of oasis you dream of when, in my case at least, you’re indoors on a cold and dark day in Cleveland. Exploring the islands is tricky by air, but much easier via ship. Bahamas cruises to take right now include quick jaunts from easy-to-get-to Florida ports as well as one-week and longer cruises that explore more deeply. You can sail there in less than a day from Florida (cruises tend to embark in the early evening and hang out at sea until the next morning ashore), which makes it both an easy escape for a quick getaway or somewhere to linger for even more rest and relaxation.

What to expect on a Bahamas cruise

The main places cruise ships visit in the Bahamas are Nassau, the capital city, and some of the islands and beaches that are affiliated with cruise lines, such as Disney’s private family wonderland Castaway Cay, off Great Abaco Island. There are small ships that explore further, including to the southern reaches of the archipelago.

Cruise passengers will find opportunities to hike in national parks, enjoy nearly deserted beaches, and explore many small churches—the Bahamas boasts more churches per capita than anywhere else in the world.

In the Bahamian capital of Nassau on New Providence Island, visitors can get a better understanding of the nation’s British colonial and West African slave history as well as of the Junkanoo culture and festivals at wonderful museums. Most day visitors, though, are typically focused on water attractions: heading off on diving or snorkeling excursions, boarding party boats with free-flowing rum punch, experiencing the beaches, swimming pools, and waterslides at the Atlantis Bahamas resort on Paradise Island, or trying to catch the big one on fishing charters.

On small ship itineraries, you may stop at San Salvador Island, where Christopher Columbus may or may not have made his first landing in the New World. (Historians quibble on the exact landing spot.) A white cross memorializes the supposed landing spot. Long Island, which stretches some 80 miles, has both rugged and sandy coasts and the natural attraction of Dean’s Blue Hole, one of the deepest sinkholes in the world at 663 feet, a place where divers and snorkelers can mingle with turtles and tarpons. The small island of Bimini is known for its clean beaches and rich marine life—hanging out at beach clubs, seeking quiet escapes in the land, and watching for dolphins and other sea creatures are prime activities.

Other cruise destinations include Eleuthera, with its inviting pink sands and protected park areas. In addition to beaches, the 365-island chain known as the Exumas are famous for swimming pigs (though they also live elsewhere in the Bahamas).

Celebrity Cruises’ “Nassau & Bimini” itinerary

  • Best for: Upscale big ship experience
  • To book: 4-nights round-trip from Miami , from $473 per person for a veranda stateroom; from $801 per person for AquaClass; and from $2,245 per person for the Retreat
  • Islands: Nassau (New Providence), Bimini, plus Key West

Celebrity Cruises sails to Nassau and Bimini in style, and if time or money is tight, you don’t have to invest too much in your Bahamas getaway. You can book, for instance, an easy, breezy four-night trip on the 2,158-passenger Celebrity Summit from under $500 per person. That said, if you splurge on a suite in the Retreat, you’ll have your own sundeck with hot tub, enjoy private lounge access, and dine at the exclusive restaurant Luminae, where signature dishes by Celebrity’s culinary ambassador, Daniel Boulud, are featured on the rotating menu—such as creamy carrot and ginger velouté and Moroccan chicken tagine with saffron couscous. Spa lovers might want to book the AquaClass staterooms, with complimentary access to a Persian Garden with infrared sauna and sensory showers and exclusive dining at health focused Blu, where the wine list features sustainable and biodynamic wines. While in Bimini, you might try your hand at sport-fishing, a year-round pastime from the island.

Disney Cruise Line’s Bahamian Cruise from Fort Lauderdale

  • Best for: Families and Disney fans of all ages
  • To book: 5-night Bahamas cruise from Fort Lauderdale on the 2,700-passenger Disney Magic , from $6,299 for four guests
  • Islands: Castaway Cay, Nassau (New Providence), Eleuthera

Disney Cruise Line has ships in the Bahamas year-round, starting with quick three- and four-night sailings from Florida ports. Ever since it first opened 1998, the highlight of any Disney cruise in the Bahamas has been Castaway Cay, a picture-perfect white-sand island paradise, complete with pirate attractions and Disney character appearances. What has Disney fans all atwitter is the opening in summer 2024 of a second exclusive for Disney Bahamas destination, Lighthouse Point, on the island of Eleuthera. There, Disney promises a celebration of Bahamian culture, including Junkanoo parades, characters from Bahamas folklore, and performances by local artists. An accompanying commitment to conservation at Lighthouse Point includes a solar installation that will provide at least 90 percent of the destination’s required electricity (Castaway Cay also has a solar installation). Family-friendly attractions abound but grown-ups can also drop the kids off in a supervised activity program and head to the adults-only beach to sip cocktails while lounging in private cabanas.

A seven-night itinerary in December 2023 gets you from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau, Bimini, San Salvador, and Long Island, Bahamas, with the bonus of some additional time built in to enjoy the Hemingway House & Museum and other attractions in Key West, Florida. Optional small group shore excursions in the Bahamas include an “Eco-Marine Safari” on Long Island, that combines small boat exploration of a mangrove channel and sandbars with a visit to see swimming pigs in a quiet cay. With both the cruise line and the Royal at Atlantis on Paradise Island affiliated with Marriott International , there’s also a hotel tie-in—you can book a daybed at the resort’s chic adults-only pool area, the Cove .

Hop aboard the Carnival Radiance for a short but fun-filled cruise weekend.

Whether you're short on vacation days or you only have a long weekend to spare, three-night cruises offer a fun and affordable way to get a change of scenery. These shorter sailings from the U.S. often amount to a weekend cruise and only depart from Florida and California for now. However, short cruises still let you dine and dance on board, enjoy world-class entertainment, and visit nearby destinations like Nassau in the Bahamas; Key West, Florida; or Ensenada, Mexico.

If you're looking for short cruises that pack a lot of good times into a weekend vacation, you should know that many cruise lines offer these trips, including Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. Read on to find out which short cruises we recommend, where they depart from, and everything you can see and do over the span of three incredible nights.

From historic landmarks to stunning beaches, Nassau offers something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in the rich history of the island, soak up the sun on pristine beaches, indulge in delicious local cuisine, or enjoy a range of water activities, Nassau has it all.

In this guide, we will take you on a virtual tour of the top attractions and must-visit locations in Nassau. So, grab your sun hat, put on some sunscreen, and get ready to explore this tropical paradise!

Explore Downtown Nassau

When you step off your cruise ship, the bustling downtown area of Nassau awaits, ready to charm you with its vibrant atmosphere and picturesque streets. Take a leisurely stroll through the colorful streets and immerse yourself in the local culture.

One of the main highlights of downtown Nassau is the iconic Bay Street, lined with charming shops, restaurants, and cafes. Here, you can shop for unique souvenirs, local handicrafts, and exquisite Bahamian treasures. Don’t forget to haggle at the famous Straw Market, where you can find authentic straw bags, hats, and other handmade crafts.

While wandering through the town, make sure to stop by Parliament Square, where you will find beautiful colonial-style buildings, including the pink-hued Parliament House. This area is not only a great place to take some Instagram-worthy photos, but it also holds historical significance as the seat of the Bahamian government.

For some cultural immersion, head to the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, located in a historic building on West Hill Street. Here, you can admire a wide range of Bahamian art, including paintings, sculptures, and mixed media installations that showcase the creativity and talent of local artists.

No trip to downtown Nassau is complete without a visit to the stunning Queen’s Staircase. This impressive limestone staircase, carved out of solid rock, comprises 66 steps that lead to the top of Bennet’s Hill. As you climb the staircase, take in the breathtaking views of Nassau and learn about its historical significance.

After exploring downtown, take a break and treat yourself to some mouthwatering Bahamian cuisine. From fresh seafood dishes to traditional island favorites like conch fritters and johnnycakes, there are plenty of local eateries where you can indulge in a true Bahamian culinary experience.

Whether you’re interested in shopping, history, culture, or gastronomy, downtown Nassau offers a plethora of activities and attractions to suit every traveler’s interests. So, make sure to carve out some time to explore this vibrant and charming part of the city during your cruise stop in Nassau.

Visit the Historic Sites

Nassau, being the capital city of the Bahamas, is steeped in history and boasts a rich heritage that can be explored through its numerous historic sites. Immerse yourself in the fascinating stories of the past as you visit these landmarks that showcase the city’s cultural heritage.

One of the most iconic historic sites in Nassau is Fort Fincastle, located atop Bennett’s Hill. This 18th-century fort offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding turquoise waters. Climb to the top of the fort’s stone tower for a breathtaking vista and learn about the fort’s role in protecting the island from invaders.

Just a short distance from Fort Fincastle, you’ll find the enchanting Queen’s staircase. This impressive limestone staircase, carved out of solid rock, is a testament to the dedication of Bahamian slaves and their contribution to the island’s history. Take your time climbing the 66 steps and listen to the tales of perseverance that surround this historic site.

Another must-visit historic site is the Heritage Museum of the Bahamas, located on Parliament Street. Housed in a historic mansion, this museum offers a glimpse into the country’s history, from the time of the Arawak Indians to the era of piracy and the impact of slavery. Explore the exhibits that showcase artifacts, documents, and photographs, providing a comprehensive overview of the Bahamas’ cultural heritage.

For a taste of Victorian-era architecture, visit the Government House on Mount Fitzwilliam. This elegant pink-and-white mansion serves as the official residence of the Governor-General and showcases beautiful gardens and lush surroundings. Take a guided tour to explore the luxurious interior and revel in the grandeur of this historic building.

No visit to Nassau would be complete without stepping foot inside the iconic Christ Church Cathedral. This Anglican church, with its Gothic architecture and stunning stained glass windows, has been a spiritual hub for locals and visitors alike since the mid-19th century. Attend a service or simply take a moment to admire the beauty and tranquility of this historic place of worship.

Exploring the historic sites of Nassau offers a glimpse into the island’s rich past and allows you to appreciate the cultural heritage that has shaped this beautiful city. So, take a step back in time and immerse yourself in the fascinating history of Nassau during your cruise stop in the Bahamas.

Enjoy the Beaches

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

cruise to bahamas stops

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brand at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.

Where to go

Our favorite destinations: These 12 destinations are at the top of our wish list for where to go this year, without crowds. In 2023, we explored an Alaskan bear paradise, Brooklyn’s famous pizzerias and a hidden gem in Italy, among other highlights .
