SKI COVER FAQ'S

Am i covered for skiing without purchasing zoom's ski sports add-on.

What do I get when I purchase the ski add-on?

In order to be covered for winter sports including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing or tubing (on groomed ski slopes) you must purchase our ski and snow sports pack. This pack cover provides cover for Unlimited overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses, $1,000 cover for piste closure, bad weather & avalanche, and $1,500 for loss or damage to your own snow sport equipment. You will also be covered for the value of any unused ski pass, ski hire or tuition fees (up to $750) following the loss or theft of your ski pass, or you being unable to ski following accident or illness.

What age limits apply to ski insurance policies with Zoom?

Zoom's ski and sports pack covers those travellers under the age of 69 only.

Are my skis covered?

Yes you are covered up to $1,500 for loss or damage to your own snow sport equipment. However we do not cover for damage to your equipment while it is in use.

Can I buy ski cover for just a portion of my holiday?

Unfortunately not. Our ski and snow sports pack needs to be purchased for the entire duration of your trip.

Am I covered for helicopter evacuation off the slopes?

Yes, if you have a serious accident on the slopes, we will pay for helicopter evacuation to get you to the nearest hospital.

Am I covered if I ski or snowboard off-piste?

Are my skis covered if they are stolen?

Yes. Zoom covers you up to $1,500 for theft of your ski gear as long as you have not left it unattended and have taken proper care of it in the first place.

Am I covered for the whole season?

For multi-trip policies the departure date will mark the start of your cover and it will automatically run for a year from that date.

Snow Sports Travel Insurance Cover FAQs

At Cover-More, we know that a snow sports holiday can bring new questions and concerns for travellers. To help, we have put together some frequently asked questions about our Snow Sports cover. Visit our snow sports travel insurance cover page for more information on purchasing your policy.

How can I buy ski and snowboard travel insurance cover?

When you’re purchasing Cover-More travel insurance, you have the option to include Snow Sports Cover at an additional cost. This cover provide protection for skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. Alternatively, you can give us a call on 0800 500 225, and our friendly Customer Service team will guide you through our policy options.

Why do I have to pay extra for snow sports?

Participating in snow sports can increase your likelihood for injury. Often, the types of injuries that occur on the mountains require urgent medical attention and are extremely costly. That's why it's smart consider including Snow Sports Cover in your travel insurance policy.

What does ski and snowboard travel insurance cover?

Our ski and snowboard travel insurance (snow sports) can cover claims involving you skiing, snowboarding, or snowmobiling, providing you meet the requirements outlined in the Policy Wording . Cover is only provided if you are on-piste, not racing, and not participating in a professional capacity.

Am I still covered for medical if I don’t add Snow Sports Cover?

Our overseas medical and dental expenses benefit applies for the duration of your trip, up to the limit described in your policy. However, if you are injured on the slopes, we will only be able to consider your claim if you have included Snow Sports Cover to your policy for an additional cost.

What does it not cover?

Our Snow Sports Cover does not protect you if you are skiing or snowboarding off-piste or if you are racing, or participating in a professional capacity. We don’t provide cover for heli-skiing, or snowcat skiing/snowcat boarding.

Is there a limit on personal equipment that can be covered?

We can provide coverage for insured personal items lost, damaged, or stolen on your trip. When you choose our Options International Plan, our luggage benefit provides the following coverage per item, set, or pair of items:

Cameras and video cameras - $3,000

Laptop and tablet computers - $3,000

Other items - $1,500

When you choose our Options International Plan, the limit for all luggage items combined is $25,000. If you require extra coverage, we allow you to increase this limit for single items for an additional cost. You can get a quote online or call us.

Please note: All personal ski equipment falls under our ‘other items’ category.

Am I covered if I use my own ski equipment?

Under our luggage benefit, we provide coverage if your equipment is lost, stolen or damaged in transit (i.e. to and from your destination). Unfortunately, this benefit does not apply to sporting and ski equipment while it is being used.

Is my rented equipment covered?

Our luggage and travel documents benefit only provides cover for insured personal items that are lost, damaged, or stolen on your trip. We do not provide this cover for hired ski items. When you hire ski equipment, you engage in a contract with your chosen ski rental company. Always ensure you’re aware of your rights and responsibilities prior to hiring ski gear on your winter holiday.

Does equipment have to be ‘new’ to be covered?

No – we do not have any specification in terms of how old your item has to be in order to have cover as a luggage item. Our claims would apply reasonable depreciation to the item when assessing the claim.

Can I apply Cover-More’s Snow Sports Cover for only part of my trip?

No. Once you vary your policy to include our Snow Sports Cover, you’ll have protection for the whole duration of your policy. This gives you flexibility if you have not booked the ski or snowboarding part of your holiday before you leave on your trip.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Does ski insurance cover off-piste?

Hey there adrenaline junkie - so even the black runs are too tame for you hey? If you're planning on getting gnarly on the slopes, check that your planned activities are covered before you go hitting that untouched powder!

Most insurers offer cover for recreational skiing and snowboarding when you’ve bought a ski insurance policy, but even for the most experienced riders this doesn’t always mean you are covered for skiing off-piste, cross country, or backcountry. This also includes higher risk winter sports activities like heli-skiing, cat-skiing, snowmobiling or lugeing.

What is skiing off-piste in the world of travel insurance?

Skiing (or snowboardng) off-piste is when you are skiing in ungroomed and unmarked slopes or pistes, including skiing in unmarked or unpatrolled areas, either inside or outside of ski resorts boundaries.

Who covers off-piste skiing or snowboarding?

Lucky for you thrill seekers, there are a few companies that cover for off-piste activities, but you generally have to be within resort boundaries with a professional instructor.

NOTE: This doesn’t mean your best mate who has been working in a bar for the past five ski seasons and thinks he’s/she’s a pro. This means an instructor that has undergone training and is the holder of a backcountry security award and a holder of the backcountry and mountain safety qualification.

General Advice Warning: The contents of this article were accurate at the time of writing. Insurers change their policies from time to time, so some information may have changed. You should always read the Product Disclosure Statement of your chosen insurer to understand what is covered and what isn't. The information provided is of a general nature only and does not take into account any personal objectives, financial situation or needs. Before making a decision you should consider the appropriateness of the information having regard to your personal circumstances.

Off-piste exclusions to pay attention to:

Like all insurance policies there are terms and conditions you need to be aware of. So even with the appropriate ski cover, exclusions will still apply. For example you wouldn’t be covered for skiing/snowboarding off-piste if:

  • Your policy says you’re only covered off-piste when you’re with a professional instructor, and you go without one.
  • Your equipment is damaged during use. Not all ski insurance policies cover for damage to your own equipment while you are using it.
  • You take part in a competition or tournament, unless it specifically says otherwise.
  • Skiing and/or snowboarding is your profession (in most cases).
  • You were under the influence! Apres is all part of the fun on a ski holiday, but bear in mind that claims will not be paid if an accident is deemed to be the result of excessive alcohol or under the influence of drugs.
  • You intentionally expose yourself to a needless risk like doing cliff drops.
  • You do not report lost or stolen items to the police within 24 hours, with a written report.
  • You cannot provide proof of ownership with original receipts for any lost or stolen items.
  • Ski equipment is left unattended in a public place and is then lost or stolen as a result. This includes equipment that is misplaced or damaged by your transport carrier.

So powderhounds, regardless of whether you're going to Thredbo or Chamonix it's really important to read your insurers policy documentation (known as the Product Disclosure Statement) to make sure you understand when you're covered, and when you're not. A slip on the slopes can be VERY costly, so it pays to know your conditions of cover before you hit the slopes.

Simple - because every visitor to new zealand deserves the very best experience..

At Ski New Zealand we know that simply selling you one of our Ski Packages isn't enough to ensure a great experience.

That’s why we take the time to prepare our suggestions to include the things we know our guests want and will enjoy. Almost 90% of the SKI NZ packages we create and book are tailor-made for our guests. We take the time to consult with you, learn about your group’s abilities, the kind of place you enjoy staying in, how you want to travel up and down the mountain and of course how you want to feel about your Ski Holiday. By this we mean some people want to be completely exhausted and exhilarated at the end of each day, some want to take it easy, enjoy a few runs and then a coffee or a wine. Everyone is different. Our team of New Zealand specialists are based in Wanaka which if you didn’t already know is probably the best location to be in if you enjoy winter snow sports. Nearly everyone here enjoys skiing or snowboarding, some to extreme levels and others enjoy a more relaxed and family approach to the slopes. This means we have people who with real-life, real-time experience located right in the heart of New Zealand’s ski area. The advice they give comes with true local knowledge.

So if you want to explore Coronet Peak or the Remarkables in Queenstown, Cardrona, Snow farm or Treble Cone in Wanaka, Roundhill & Mt. Dobson in Tekapo or Mt. Hutt near Christchurch then talk to the team at Ski New Zealand before you book your next winter holiday.

Having your visit to New Zealand planned and managed by a dedicated and expert New Zealand based company ensures you see the best the country has to offer. Our up-to-date knowledge, independent advice and a comprehensive selection of accommodation options, vehicle types and activities means your tour is created to suit your interests, tastes and resources. A custom designed tour doesn't cost any more than an off the shelf itinerary and it means you get exactly what you want.

TRAVEL INSURANCE FAQ'S

We understand that travel insurance can be confusing, here are some of our most common questions.

Q. Can I buy a policy if I have already departed New Zealand?

Q. i am currently still on my trip and my policy ended, can i extend my policy, q. does tinz cover natural disasters, q. am i covered for riding a motorbike overseas.

  • Yes, you’re covered to ride a motorbike provided that: - You are licensed to ride a motorbike in New Zealand. - You hold a valid motorbike licence for the country you are in. - You wear a helmet at all times while riding. You can ride a motorcycle that is the same capacity you are licensed to ride in Australia. If your licence restricts the engine size you can ride, then you will need to stick to that when you are away. Learn more in our guide to riding motorbikes and scooters overseas.

Q. What doesn’t travel insurance cover?

  • It's important to be aware that all travel insurance policies have 'exclusions'. So, there are some things that we just can't cover you for. These certainly aren’t secret and can be found in our policy wording, but we want to highlight some of the things you’re unlikely to be covered for so that you can make smart decisions when heading on holiday. - You are generally not covered for reckless behaviour or deliberately putting yourself in harms way. - Not taking care of your personal belongings, such as leaving your things behind in public places. - You’rer not covered if you were drunk and the consumption of alcohol contributed to your loss. As for illegal recreational drugs, you're definitely not covered. - We have a general exclusion in relation to pandemics and epidemics. - You are not covered for pre-existing medical conditions that you failed to tell us about or take cover for. - You are not covered for events already known in the mass media at the time of purchasing your policy. Even though our policies have these exclusions, all TINZ customers are entitled to lodge a claim for review, which would be assessed based on individual facts and circumstances.

Q. Does TINZ cover pre-existing medical conditions?

  • Yes, don't let an existing medical condition get in the way of your travels. We cover 35 medical conditions automatically for free. Any other conditions need to be declared through our easy online medical assessment. See more information about pre-existing illnesses here.

Q. Am I covered for a family emergency?

  • Both TINZ’s Comprehensive & Comprehensive plans cover for additional travel expenses such as your return flight to New Zealand if a relative of either you, or travelling companion requires hospitalisation or dies unexpectedly. (no excess applies)

Q. What sports activities are covered by TINZ travel insurance?

  • TINZ gives you the freedom to take that heart-pounding leap - worry free! Our optional Sports & Activities Cover provides you with cover for a range of more adventurous activities not covered under a standard policy. We cover things like cycling, snorkelling (depth limits apply) and water skiing for free. We offer extra cover for activities like canyoning, abseiling, trekking above 3000 meters. See our sports adventure activities page for more information.

Q. What is TINZ’s terrorism cover?

  • While many travel insurers exclude cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits in the event of terrorism, under our Frequent Traveller and Comprehensive Plus plans we allow you to cancel in the event that MFAT travel warnings restrict you from travel. We provide $10 million worth of medical cover if you’re injured in a terror attack. Conditions apply. See more information about our terrorism cover here.
