What is the difference between pajamas and loungewear?

This is a great question because women’s pajamas and loungewear do have a lot in common. They’re both comfortable, perfect for naps, as well as lazy days around the house.

Similarities aside, they’re not the same. Here are a few of their differences:

Purpose: Although they’re both comfy, pajamas are designed for sleep, while loungewear is made to be worn outside. Although pajamas can be versatile too, most have the same style prototype: a matching bottom and top with buttons, collar — you get the picture. They also tend to be lighter than loungewear pieces.

Material: In comparison to pajamas, loungewear can be made from a wider range of materials because they’re meant for the outdoors. Heavier fibers, such as fleece or knit blends are just as common as sets made from 100% cotton.

Pajamas are usually made from lighter materials that are breathable, such as cotton, silk or satin. While there are exceptions, like fleece pajamas, they still wouldn’t have the design details to make them appropriate for outside. Hoodies, sleeves with thumbholes and similar features are common in loungewear, making it easier to transition from your couch to the local bodega without much fuss. Can you nap in them? But besides pajamas, many TFG readers also use a sleep sheet during their travels for added comfort. Sometimes, one wants an extra soft layer in a hotel or Airbnb, while at other times, if you’re planning to stay in a hostel or other shared budget accommodation, a sleeping sheet can help you avoid bed bugs. I’ve only seen bed bugs a handful of times myself.

The first time was during my round-the-world backpacking trip when I stayed in a CHEAP backpacker hostel in Fiji. I put all my clean laundry on the bed, then brought the bugs with me on the flight to New Zealand. I washed my clothes as soon as I got there, and cleaned my bag, and had no more issues. And I learned to never put my clothes or luggage on a bed.

The next time I encountered bed bugs, I was in a small guest house in Phuket, Thailand, where I woke up to see them on the fabric headboard. Gross. They moved me to another room and, luckily, I didn’t see them.

Regardless of concern about bed bugs, I’ve ALWAYS slept in a sleeping liner (either silk or synthetic) to keep mosquitoes from biting me, which has worked extremely well. It can be a bit hot, but if you stick to a breathable bamboo or silk liner, it’s worth not getting bitten by any or all bugs!

The absolute BEST sleepwear for travel are from Woolx! I personally have enjoyed the Billie Lounge Tee and the Phoebe Lounge Tank, both in Navy as they can also be worn as tops during the day! If that sounds weird the fit & look of both is totally suitable for day wear. They hand wash & dry overnight. I also love the Poppy Lounge Shorts with pockets! Comfy for relaxing.

I wear pj pants with long sleeve tops to bed year round. I keep my bedroom cool to aid with sleep. Wearing full length PJ’s both keeps my body cozy, but it also aid with tossing and turning—I don’t get wrapped up in the bedclothes.

It’s funny, but pajamas are usually a hard one for me! I hate to use up the space, but know I need them. I agree with the double duty statement…so lately I have been traveling with a Nau Heritage organic cotton dress that I wear as a nightgown. Debbie, I also don’t take “ dedicated” pajamas. I would love to have had Anatomie’s black joggers, but way too expensive for me. Instead, found a similar pair of long joggers on Amazon, that I can wear with whatever top is most appropriate to the weather. We go to Hawaii every year now in January….but start from Denver! So smartwool is my go-to for tops. Can also be worn as pj’s while staying at Kiluea, where it tends to be cold and wet!

Hi Hania, you can wear it as a layer under a blouse, as a top under a blazer or other jacket if you have a non-sheer style, or go with the current lingerie fashion trend and just wear it as a top 🙂

I have a long tank top that is so old it has tiny holes – but so comfy, I can’t give it up. It’s now my sleep shirt. Works for things like whitewater rafting, though, or any activity where it’s okay to wear something ratty. (I’ve also worn it as a paint smock when we stayed in a hostel that asked all residents to do a painting for them. Crazy but fun!)

Race to the International Business Lounge Shower in Moscow + General Impressions

Having benefited from the warnings of others who had come through the International Business Lounge before me, I was aware there was only one shower available in the lounge. So I managed to be the second person off the plane and was speedily heeling it to the transfer desk. There I ran into trouble because I lost site of the guy in front of me, and started looking at all the signs trying to figure out where to go.

I eventually wound up at one of the transfer desks to ask. Apparently I should have turned a sharp left right off the escalators to go through security and my 50yd detour had cost me a couple of places in line. I managed to move up a little in the potential lounge line by being speedy in security and arrived as the 3 business/first class passenger.

The first guy apparently didn’t want a shower and I was able to check in at the front desk simultaneously with the second guy. I immediately asked them about the shower and they gave me a towel and amenity kit and told me to take the first left. As I was leaving I heard the guy also ask about a shower. Phew.

This shower room was very basic and tiny, and reminded me a lot of the Turkish Airlines First Class shower in Instanbul, although at least there fewer people were competing for them.

The “amenity kit†was very very basic. My razor had no markings, but a strip of cardboard torn off a Gillette package had been included.

Since time was limited and I felt bad for any of the other passengers who were trying to squeeze in a shower after me, I decided not to take the time to wash, and then dry, my hair.

I think I was actually pretty speedy, but the door kept getting rattled by folks trying to get in every couple of minutes which unnerved me. “What if the lock slipped?†And then I’d be on display in the tiny clear glass shower. I’ll admit, I was rather irritated when I got out of the shower room to see that the only people waiting were the two men who’d been behind me originally and had to know that it was the only room and I was in there…

I wasn’t hungry and was pretty tired at this point, so I grabbed a water (guessed wrong and got sparkling) and decided to forgo pictures at this point, figuring I could get some on the way back. The lounge was basic with lots of rows of wicker seating.

The food presentations were actually fairly diverse, they just didn’t look appetizing after my huge meals on the plane. They also had two food areas, the one major one which had a seating area and beverages, and then a smaller section immediately outside it which offered a limited selection of snacks.

The lounge wasn’t very interesting to me, but the rest of my limited time in Moscow was! From the moment we broke through the low-hanging clouds on our descent, my face was pretty much glued to the window.

I was fascinated by plane graveyard others had mentioned – with aircraft parked out in the snow, missing doors, windows, and other parts.

I was amused by the airport signage and use of apostrophes. Is it really the Austrian Airlines airline lounge or one just faked to look like it?? 🙂

At some point I hope to actually visit Russia, but for now this first introduction was pretty exciting.

Harrisburg vs Istanbul: A tale of two cities and their airport lounges | Travel Views

Airport lounges can be a most welcome respite for harried travelers, especially those traveling many hours overseas. And these days, with flight delays, packed planes and sky-high prices at airport restaurants, airport lounges are more desirable than ever.

But all airport lounges are not the same. The one at Harrisburg International Airport just may be among the worst in the world. And the Turkish Airlines Business Lounge in Istanbul may be among the best.

These two airports certainly represent opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to lounges for first class and business travelers. The differences between HIA’s lounge and the one in Istanbul’s new airport couldn’t be starker.

First, it seems anyone can just walk into what purports to be the business lounge at the Harrisburg airport, though few travelers seem to know that. On the day I entered, there was no one at the reception area, and no one checked to see if I had a business class ticket or other credential to allow entry. There were five people in lounge, and the atmosphere was modern and clean, but far from luxurious and spacious.

The HIA lounge is a fraction of the size of the two in Istanbul, which together boast almost 140,000 square feet of plush sofas, reclining sleep-chairs, work places and even sleep alcoves.

HIA has two small rooms, one with a few chairs and counters, the other a meeting space with board-room styled table and chairs. There’s a refrigerator in one end of the room with bottled water and packaged mints at the reception area. That’s it. There isn’t even a bathroom in the lounge; you have to go outside to the one in the airport.

Most business lounges in the United States and around the world, including at BWI and the Philadelphia airport, offer at least a quiet, inviting space with comfortable seating, as well as free food and drinks, often including wine, spirits, soda, coffee, and tea. And most offer well maintained bathrooms. Some provide spa-like showers, with toiletries and towels. That’s a real plus for international travelers emerging from a transatlantic flight.

Istanbul’s business lounge would put many around the world to shame, but few are as spartan as the one at HIA, which doesn’t even have a coffee machine.

Compare that to Istanbul’s Turkish Air Business Lounge that offers almost 70,000 square feet of coffee and drink bars, luxury shops, restaurants, cafes, play areas for kids, work hub with desks and USB ports, as well as spotless bathrooms and showers.

The airport actually has both a Business Lounge for Turkish Air top-tier ticket holders and those with Star Alliance, which includes United and a myriad of other international airlines. There’s also the nearby “Miles&Smiles” Lounge, with another 70,000 square feet for travelers holding elite credit cards who are Star Alliance travelers.

These lounges are virtual cities, featuring everything from golf and flying simulators to an art gallery and a movie theatre. There’s a room with giant screens featuring videos of world-acclaimed soccer stars. And there’s even special access for people in wheelchairs.

Once inside Istanbul’s luxury village, everything is free. That’s right, you can get non-stop wine, spirits, sodas, expressos, cappuccinos, lasagna, pizza, salads, all sorts of pastries and deserts, without paying a single lira. Did I mention the baklava and Turkish coffee?

The question most travelers want to know is how to get into these places.

At most airport lounges, you have to present a boarding pass for a business or first-class ticket to enter. Some lounges accept Priority Pass, which travelers can purchase for as little as $99 per year. Be warned, though, not all lounges accept Priority Pass, and lounges that do accept it may not be in every terminal of larger airports.

Having a Priority Pass is not a slam dunk for access to all business lounges, domestically or internationally. And it can be confusing and frustrating trying to find what lounge in what terminal at what airport accepts Priority Pass or any of the elite credit cards for entry,

Some airport lounges allow entry to people who hold some upper-end credit cards like the American Express Platinum card. The card guarantees access to American Express’s Centurion Lounges, which provide generous amenities like free Wi-fi, food, drinks, and comfortable seating. But not every airport has a Centurion Lounge, and it could be in a terminal far, far away from where you take off.

Holders of Platinum American Express cards can gain entry into Delta’s business lounges even without business or first-class tickets, but only if they are flying Delta that day. An Amex Platinum card with an American Airlines ticket won’t cut it.

Some airlines offer one-day passes to their clubs. And if they want to skip the ticket requirements, travelers can simply buy membership into the lounge clubs. United Airlines offers club memberships between $500- $650 annually. American advertises new annual memberships between $750-$850.

If you travel a lot, the cost is worth it to access most airport lounges abroad and in the United States. Just don’t expect much at the lounge in Harrisburg.
