A young woman tearing up paperwork at a desk in an office.

Is writing down my rage the secret to resolving it?

Emma Beddington

New research reveals that listing your grievances on a piece of paper, then throwing them away may make you less angry. So I gave it a try …

A lifetime enveloped in a benign, insulating cloud of oestrogen left me ill-prepared to be this nakedly, shockingly angry as it ebbs away in perimenopause. It is occasionally exhilarating, but mainly awful, being furious about so many things: the government, contradictory dental advice, inaction on climate breakdown, whatever cat keeps defecating at my back door. I exist at an exhausting, irrational rolling simmer that periodically comes to a head with me inappropriately venting, realising I’m being unreasonable, shamefacedly having a word with myself, then getting cross again.

Help may be at hand, however, according to research from Japan , which suggests that writing your grievances on paper then throwing it away may make you less angry. Study participants were deliberately angered by researchers criticising their work and adding gratuitous insulting comments. Participants then wrote down how they felt and either threw the paper away, shredded it or kept it. The ones who disposed of the paper “completely eliminated their anger”.

Although participants were mostly in their – surely less irate? – early 20s, I had to test if it worked on midlife rage too. Dissipating my Boris Johnson or Rwanda policy rage seemed an impossibly big ask, but I wrote them down, plus some pettier, momentary furies: “Why am I the only one who deals with expired hummus?”; “Man in gravel driveway methodically spraying tiny, hopeful dandelion shoots”; “Malfunctioning laptop fan”; and “Towels piled up wet”. All classics.

I found the act of crumpling or ripping (I don’t have a shredder) very physically satisfying – a tiny haptic catharsis. But, examining my feelings afterwards, I was as tooth-grindingly angry about Johnson’s existence as ever. The smaller irritations mostly melted away, but I think the mere act of committing my hummus chuntering to paper was enough to show me how ridiculous I was in quite an anger-deflating way. I’m not sure that disposing of my angry scrawls added anything. Perhaps what would really help my anger management is a running grievance list, whereby I write about everything and everyone I’m cross with. What could possibly go wrong?

Lovina's Amish Kitchen: Celebrating a belated Easter together with family

It’s a beautiful Monday evening here on the Eicher homestead. We had such a nice sunny day, which made for a good laundry day. The solar eclipse was today. How amazing is God’s creation. The temperature reached 72 degrees. Our rhubarb is coming up very nicely. Before long, we should be able to use it. The asparagus is peeping through.

Tonight, we had dandelion greens made into a salad along with steamed potatoes, bacon and cheese. I always look forward to that meal in the spring. I saw a few yellow flowers already on the dandelion greens, which makes the greens too bitter. The young tender greens are the best to use, and there are still plenty of those.

Yesterday, we had our whole family here for the noon meal because we didn’t get to spend Easter together this year. We hid some eggs for the children. They always enjoy that each year. We have 12 grandchildren, ages 5 months to 7 years old. Each one is so precious. May God keep his protecting hand over them as we travel into the unknown future.

Prayers for family with illnesses

Our family has once again been reminded how precious good health is. My brother Albert, age 59, is in the hospital with stage four colon cancer. What a shock to him, his family and to all of us. Albert worked at the metal shop with my husband Joe. He was working full time, not ever expecting what was going on in his body.

He had surgery, and the doctors removed two feet of his colon, and it had also spread to other areas. Time will tell, but we pray for his body to go into remission with the chemo treatments they are planning to do. God knows our future, and we trust him to lead the way.

The same day Albert was brought to the ER was the same day I took son Benjamin to the same ER. Benjamin had let the nail gun slip out of his hand and a 3½-inch nail shot into his leg. It ended up close to his femur bone. The doctor did surgery the next day to remove the nail.

While Benjamin was in surgery, I went up to visit with brother Albert before he was transferred to a bigger hospital. On Thursday, Benjamin will have his stitches taken out. Last fall, Benjamin was laid up for 10 weeks with a broken leg and now another surgery.

Sisters Verena and Emma, Joe and I spent Easter Sunday at the hospital with Albert and Sarah Irene. It was nice to get to visit with them. They need a lot of encouragement. Life looks very dark to them right now. Let’s keep them in our prayers.

On Friday night, Joe and I and sons Benjamin and Kevin visited with Albert again. He seemed weak from his surgery.Tomorrow, daughter Loretta and I plan to help daughter Susan and Ervin take a hot lunch to the pupils in Kaitlyn’s school. I think Susan said there are 30 students in her school. I imagine Kaitlyn is excited to have us all come.

Our grass is getting nice and green and spring flowers are blooming. Happy spring to everyone and God’s blessings to all!

This is a recipe for dandelions smothered in our favorite homemade sour cream. However, you can use the sour cream part for other seasonal greens as well. This same sour cream is great when used with in-season, fresh-from-the-garden lettuce and endive. Home-cured ham also goes well with it. Any unused sour cream can be refrigerated for up to two days.

Dandelion Sour Cream Salad

½ cup mayonnaise

1 cup apple cider vinegar

2½ cups whole milk

salt (to taste)

4 hard-boiled eggs, diced

4 cups packed young dandelion greens

Combine the mayonnaise, vinegar, milk and salt in a quart jar. Shake until smooth. Put the eggs and dandelion greens in a large bowl and pour the sour cream mixture over them. Serves 4 to 6.
