1. architecture bus tour.

With the city’s rich architectural history, viewing the many art installations and buildings by famous architects is among some of the best things to do in Columbus Indiana. And luckily, there are multiple ways to enjoy these unique attractions.

The most comprehensive architecture tour in Columbus is the bus tour offered by the Visitors Center. The tour lasts 2 hours and includes a narrated ride around town learning about and viewing some of the architectural highlights. There is a bit of walking when you hop off the bus at some of the locations, but it’s minimal.

This tour fills up quickly, so make sure to book in advance if it’s the one you are interested in! It’s fun to see the bus driving around town, and the narrators are passionate about the history and architecture of Columbus so will make your tour that much more fun! All tours start from the visitors’ center.

2. Architecture Walking Tour

There are several options if you prefer a walking tour. The first one is through the Columbus Indiana Visitors Center and includes a guided walking tour of downtown Columbus. It lasts about an hour and a half and you’ll even get to go inside some of the architectural wonders of Columbus.

The second option is a “do-it-yourself” walking tour. With this option, you can download an app that will help guide and educate you as you enjoy the downtown architecture. There are 18 stops on this tour, all of which have an audio clip sharing the history and importance as well as a few pictures of the outside and inside.

Both tours start from the visitors’ center and if you don’t have time for the informative guided tour, then the do-it-yourself option is one of the best free things to do in Columbus, so give that a try.

3. Architecture Driving Map

If you want to enjoy ALL of the art and architecture in Columbus, for a small fee you can pick up a map at the Columbus Indiana Visitors Center , hop in your car, and start driving. There are a lot of places to check out, so I’d suggest picking a section of town and concentrating on one area at a time.

We live close enough that I actually keep the map in my glove compartment and if we happen to be in the area, we’ll pick a few buildings and explore!

4. Public Art

In addition to the amazing architecture in Columbus, the city has an extensive Public Art collection. From the majestic Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans to the Large Arch by Henry Moore, you’ll find beauty all over the city.

Most of the installations are highlighted on the driving map, so purchasing it is worthwhile whether art or architecture is your jam. All of them are listed on the Visit Columbus website, so that’s another resource to locate and learn about the art Columbus has to offer.

5. Miller House & Gardens

The Miller House is a mid-century modern residence designed by famous architect Eero Saarinen. Eero Saarinen is probably best known for designing the St. Louis Arch . The interior of the house was done by Alexander Girard, and the Miller House garden by landscape architect Dan Kiley.

The only way to see the interior of the house is to take the tour which originates at the Columbus area visitors center. If you enjoy mid-century design, the Miller House is an exemplary example.

Insider tip: children under 10 are not permitted on the Miller House tour, and you will be asked to remove your shoes and wear socks while touring the house or wear shoe covers.

6. Downtown Boutiques

The heart of Columbus is absolutely its downtown area, and with the Visitors Center located downtown, it’s the ideal place to begin your visit. Plus, it’s very walkable which is a nice way to get the feel of a place! There are plenty of things to do in downtown Columbus, so I’d suggest starting your visit to the town there.

Downtown Columbus is adorable. Within the few blocks that comprise downtown, you’ll encounter a number of unique boutiques. You’ll also find a wonderful little bookstore – the second-oldest independent bookstore in Indiana!

Strolling the streets and browsing the local shops is a great way to get a feel for the community AND you’ll get to enjoy some of the art and architecture as you walk.

In fact, I’d recommend downloading the app, and using it as you shop downtown to learn more about the history and the buildings you encounter.

7. Bartholomew County Historical Society Museum

Just a few steps off the main downtown streets is the Bartholomew County Historical Society Museum . Located in the McEwen-Samuels-Marr House (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) , the museum houses two permanent exhibits that relate to the history of Bartholomew County as well as several temporary exhibits.

Although not a large museum, it’s quite interesting and the docents are happy to show you around and share a bit about the museum and some of the special highlights. It’s another one of the best free things to do in downtown Columbus Indiana.

8. Columbus Visitors Center

Really when you are deciding upon what things to do in Columbus Indiana, your first stop should be at the Columbus Visitors Center .

The visitors center is where all the tours originate, and where you can purchase any maps you’d like to help you get around. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable (they helped me download the app for the free downtown walking tour) and can help you make the most of your visit.

In addition to the information you’ll gather, the visitors center is home to the beautiful Dale Chihuly glass pieces Yellow Neon Chandelier, and Persians. If you’ve ever visited the Bellagio in Las Vegas or the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis, you’re probably well aware of Chihuly!

There is also an extensive gift shop full of locally crafted items unique to Columbus, so it’s a great place to pick up a souvenir or two.

9. The Commons

Even if you have kids with you who aren’t interested in art and architecture (and realistically most kids aren’t) , there are plenty of kid-friendly things to do in Columbus Indiana!

And maybe, just by enjoying the fun kid stuff with them, you can sneak in a little art and architecture during the visit – stealth learning!

The Commons has a playground like no other. When our kids were little and we’d end up in Columbus, this was always the first stop.

With an eye-catching two-story climbing tower and multiple areas for younger kids and toddlers to explore, it’s a terrific way for kids to have fun and get some activity at the same time!

The Commons itself is a striking glass building and home to the public art installation Chaos I as well as several restaurants and event space.

10. Kidscommons

Just across the street, and not to be confused with The Commons is Kidscommons . A wonderful children’s museum located in downtown Columbus, it’s the perfect stop for elementary and younger kids.

Lots of hands-on learning and interactive exhibits will ensure your children will have fun while they learn! Plan on spending an hour or so exploring and enjoying all Kidscommons has to offer.

We spent a fun afternoon here one year with our kids during their spring break. Be sure to ask about the world’s largest toilet when you visit!

11. Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum

2024 UPDATE: Zaharakos now serves beer & wine for their adult guests! When you are ready for an ice cream break (and who isn’t after a fun day of playing and exploring) , Zaharakos should be your first choice.

Zaharakos has been a historic landmark (and ice cream parlor) in Columbus for over 100 years! The building is beautiful inside and out and retains much of its early 1900s charm. It’s one of the longest-standing attractions in Columbus Indiana.

After you devour your delicious ice cream treats, you can check out the connected museum which houses a Welte Orchestrion (self-playing organ) and other “soda fountain” memorabilia. It’s quite interesting and full of gorgeous antiques.

12. People Trails

With all that the city has to offer, it’s no surprise that there are numerous active and enjoyable outdoor things to do in Columbus Indiana!

Throughout Columbus are more than 27 miles of paved trails called People Trails as they allow anything people-powered (bikes, walking, scooters, etc.) . I always search out these kinds of trails when we travel as it’s nice to stretch your legs after a car ride or big meal.

The trails run all around town, near rivers, creeks, and beautiful farmland. There are several places to hop on the trail, and the best way to find them is via the Visitors Center or AllTrails. Bring your bike or just lace up your sneakers and get out and explore!

13. Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum

Another one of the best free things to do in Columbus Indiana with kids is a visit to the Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum. If you have a plane lover in your group, they will really enjoy this visit.

Throughout our years of exploring Indiana, we’ve discovered a rich aviation history , and this museum expands upon that in a fun and interactive way. The docents know their museum well and will entertain and educate you during your visit.

The Atterbury Bakalar Air Museum is located near the airport, so it’s also fun to watch the smaller planes take off and land when you are there.

14. Mill Race Park

Even the parks in Columbus Indiana have famous designers!

Designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh, this large (85-acre) park is on the river and in addition to what you’d typically find in a park has an observation tower, covered bridge, and amphitheater.

Of course, you’ll also discover playgrounds, basketball courts, and picnic shelters, so it’s an ideal spot to spend a sunny afternoon soaking up the sun and having fun.

There are dozens of amazing places to eat and drink in Columbus – with a city so full of art and architecture it’s no surprise that the food scene is wonderful too. I can’t even begin to share all the delicious choices, but here are a few favorite restaurants in Columbus Indiana.

15. Ramen Alley

We stumbled upon Ramen Alley while exploring the downtown using the downtown guided app and decided a bowl of ramen sounded like a perfect way to warm up and re-energize for the rest of the day.

Located down an alley, this hidden gem is not only beautifully decorated, but it also serves some pretty amazing ramen. The menu is limited to a few appetizers, rice bowls, and ramen, but it was still hard to decide what to order as everything looked and smelled delicious.

We settled on splitting a spicy Miso Bowl with a few gyoza as an appetizer and it was perfect. Spicy, warm, and full of flavor with ramen that still had a bit of bite to it. YUM!

16. Lucabe Coffee

Every downtown needs a delicious coffee shop and lucky for Columbus residents they have several. On our last visit, we chose Lucabe Coffee for an afternoon break and found it delightful.

First the name – love it. Lucabe is a mix of the owners’ kids’ names – and the idea is that Lucabe is not only a wonderful coffee shop but a place where kids are welcome. There is even a cute kids’ corner where kids can play while their parents relax over a delicious drink.

There are plenty of working spots tucked all around the coffee shop, so it’s easy to find a corner and set up shop if you need to get some work done.

And of course, the coffee was delicious. Lucabe uses beans roasted from a nearby Louisville, Kentucky roaster. With yummy coffee, plenty of places to relax, and friendly staff it’s a great little coffee shop!

17. Upland Columbus Pump House

As a huge fan of Upland’s sour beers, Upland Pump House was high on my list of places to check out on our last trip to Columbus.

The Columbus bar is located in a 1903 historical building that was once a pump house designed by architect Harrison Albright. It’s a truly beautiful building and Upland has done a wonderful job of restoring it and creating a welcoming and lovely brewery .

Upland Brewing Company is out of nearby Bloomington, Indiana and so is well known throughout central Indiana for its delicious beers. This location was no exception.

We split the Baby Wedge and indulged in a few different Upland beers – a PawPaw Sour and Two of Hearts (a fruited gose). I’ve had both before (and enjoyed them) but either in cans or bottled and there is just something better about a beer straight from the tap!

18. 450 North Brewery

450 North Brewery is one of my all-time favorite places to visit in Columbus Indiana on a lazy afternoon. A little bit outside of downtown Columbus, it’s a restaurant, brewery, and winery we’ve visited dozens of times. It’s just always good!

Although the menu changes from time to time, you can always find their delicious wood-fired pizzas and plenty of tasty drink options.

In addition to typical beers, 450 North specializes in smoothies – which are heavily fruited and thicker beers. So yummy! They create tons of fun and flavorful combinations and I haven’t had one yet that wasn’t delicious.

If that’s not your speed, you can also find their own versions of hard ciders (yummy) and even wine from Simmons Winery.

It’s fun to do a wine tasting, order a pizza and a flight of beer and then sit outside on the sunny deck to enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

One of the coolest things about Columbus, Indiana is the amazing amount of beautiful and unique art and architecture. For a fairly small town, it’s quite astonishing. You’ll discover over 90 buildings and public art installations in this town of just under 50K people.

In 1957, the Cummins Foundation was founded by Irwin Miller to encourage the community to use prominent architects to design schools by offering to pay the architect’s fees. This began with schools and expanded into other buildings. Before too long, Columbus Indiana became well-known globally for its modern architecture.

Where is Columbus Indiana Located?

Columbus Indiana is conveniently located less than an hour south of Indianapolis and 70 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. With such a great location it’s a terrific day trip or weekend getaway!

Where to stay when visiting Columbus Indiana

Although there are several chain motels located along the I-65 Interstate, I’d recommend staying in downtown Columbus. It’s more fun to immerse yourself in the city and the choices are wonderful.

Inn at Irwin Gardens

If you like a bed & breakfast experience, choose the Inn at Irwin Gardens . It was built in 1864 for the Irwin family, and the building has been used as a residence or Inn for many years.

The Inn also has beautiful and extensive gardens. And even if you don’t choose to spend the night there, you can call the Inn or the Columbus Visitors Center and arrange for a tour of the house and grounds. In addition, the grounds are open to the public for free several days a week during the summer and fall. Check the website for current days and times.

How to get around Columbus Indiana

If you plan to venture outside of the downtown area of Columbus Indiana, you’ll want a car . Technically you could spend a few days just exploring downtown if you stayed at the Hotel Indigo , but there is so much more to see that a car just makes sense.

Miamisburg Mound State Park, OH

The Miamisburg Mound rises defiantly like a giant green pyramid from the Ohio plains. It shouldn't be there and yet it is. Constructed by the ancient Adena culture around 2,000 years ago, the mound is 65-feet tall and is one of the two largest man-made conical hills of its kind in North America. Steps have been built, so you can walk up to the observation platform at the top of the hill for a wonderful viewing experience, and nice little bit of exercise.

The Wilds (Cumberland, OH)

Driving Distance: 1 hour 20 minutes

The Serengeti of the Midwest, this unique, non-profit safari park makes for a one-of-a-kind day trip. In addition to viewing exotic animals like the Southern White Rhino and the Eastern Hellbender up close, guests can enjoy other adventures like zip-lining and horseback riding.

Kelleys Island, OH

Driving Distance: 3 Hours from Columbus

A 20-minute ferry ride from Marblehead, OH delivers you to this remarkable little gem on Lake Erie. In the summer there's fishing, kayaking, camping, scuba diving and much more. And during the offseason you'll find plenty of room to explore.

Located just 40 miles from Columbus, Newark is a great spot to go if you’re looking to get out of the city for the day. Fans of quirky landmarks can get an up-close-and-personal look at the world’s largest basket, which actually houses a company headquarters.

The Interesting Works Museum, which is dedicated to Newark’s industrial history, is worth visiting too. Here, you can learn about canal-building and glass blowing, as well as the history of the region. Keep an eye out for ancient earthworks, which were constructed by Native American civilizations in the area.

Also, consider going in early June. Not only will you be able to check out the sites, but you’ll be able to soak in the atmosphere of the Newark Strawberry Festival and nosh on strawberry shortcakes and other delicious dishes.

Experience the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty Ohio

1-hour drive from Columbus

If you’re looking to explore during your next day trip, head northwest to the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty. These Ohio caves are recognized as some of the most colorful in the United States because of their amazing collection of stalagmites, stalactites, and other formations.

If you’re going to go exploring, take a jacket and a camera. The caverns maintain a constant temperature of 54 degrees, and a jacket will keep you comfortable. With your camera, you can get amazing photos of the formations up close and be able to show them to family and friends.

Guided tours lasting about an hour are offered, so be prepared for some walking.

A Trip to Yellow Springs Ohio

There are many fun options for day trips from Columbus Ohio to Yellow Springs. In particular, Young’s Jersey Dairy Farm has excellent ice cream and a restaurant.

You can also visit the  Glen Helen Nature Preserve , which has a nice visitors center, and you can learn about the area as you walk through the pathways. There’s a grotto and some interesting wildlife.

In and around Yellow Springs, is Clifton Ohio with a covered bridge and Historic Clifton Mill . There are less than 100 mills still in existence today, and this is one of them.

What to See in Mansfield Ohio

If you’ve seen “Shawshank Redemption” (if you haven’t, come on it’s a classic), you’ll really enjoy Mansfield. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, this city is very interesting.

The Ohio State Reformatory is fascinating and intriguing. You’re allowed to wander around and freak yourself out with all the nooks, crannies, and peeling wallpaper in every room. The audio guides enrich your time and point out things that you would probably never notice.

For example, there’s an ‘x’ of light that’s made between four doorways that’s always there because of the symmetry of the building. Interesting, but most people don’t notice.

Beware that there’s no heat in the building. We went in February and nearly froze to death. However, we still loved it and can’t wait to visit again.

A Visit in Lucas Ohio

About 20 minutes from Mansfield, is another wonderful site worth visiting — Malabar Farm State Park . It features lots of events, like Wildflower hikes and Maple Syrup Festivals . The home was built by a man named Louis Bromfield in the 1940s and has all the original furnishings.

It features paintings from France, a grand piano, etc.

The home is interesting to explore, and the history is fascinating. Many celebrities visited the home, and in fact, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall got married here. The home was donated to be part of a state park and is very well-done.

The state park, which is also near Mohican State Park , features hiking trails and look-outs. The tallest point in the area, Mt. Jeez, is a great overlook to see the entire farm.

We visited Malabar Farm State Park in the summer and enjoyed some of the hiking trails we’d heard about in February.  We also visited the farm and saw some of the animals, and then ate at the Malabar Farm Restaurant , which uses local ingredients in their dishes.

Cedar Bog Nature Preserve in Urbana Ohio

Less than one hour from Columbus, you’ll find a 450-acre nature preserve. Thousands of years ago, glaciers carved through much of Ohio and left behind what are now protected wetlands.

Visitors will be pleased to learn that boardwalks go through the wetlands, so you won’t have to put on heavy-duty gear to go exploring. You can explore the preserve year-round, but visiting in springtime is something special when the lady slipper orchids bloom.

There’s a small fee for each entrant to help with the upkeep of the park. But it’s worth it considering all the rare plants and animals you’ll get to see. 

Hocking Hills State Park in Logan Ohio

Almost every local knows about Hocking Hills State Park as a destination for day trips from Columbus Ohio . There aren’t many places to hike and see hills around Columbus (obviously), so this area is close enough it’s a hot place to visit.

However, it’s worth mentioning regardless. There are many trails and sites worth mentioning, including Old Man’s Cave .  

John Glenn Astronomy Park in Logan Ohio

There are lots of great day trips from Columbus Ohio, but a visit to John Glenn Astronomy Park makes for a great night trip. If you go on a clear night, you’ll have a great experience and be able to see the night sky during one of the many weekly programs that are held.

Visitors can plan their own evenings of fun too. It’s open at all times, and admission is free. So, if you’re into stars and astrology, grab your telescope, and make the drive.

Kings Island Amusement Park in Mason Ohio

1-hour and 15-minute drive from Columbus

Located just north of Cincinnati, this amusement park is a favorite spot for people of all ages to visit.

There are plenty of thrill rides to delight roller coaster fans, but there’s also Planet Snoopy and Soak City water park. A brand new coaster, the Orion, was added recently.

This is the perfect place if you’re looking to have some fun after a long week of work.

Explore Greater Dayton Ohio

When you think of Ohio, you likely think of Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. But if you’re looking for a fun day trip, don’t discount the numerous Dayton Ohio things to do .

If you love planes and aviation, Dayton is a place you absolutely have to visit. Famed pioneers of flight Orville and Wilbur Wright are from Dayton, and the city is where they built their first aircraft.

Also, Dayton is home to the National Museum of the US Air Force , one of the world’s largest aviation museums. You can marvel at more than 350 aerospace vehicles, missiles, and exhibits that tell of the country’s aviation history. You can test out a flight simulator and check out a 3D theater too.

While you’re near Dayton, head to Lebanon Ohio and the Gentle Breeze Hot Air Balloon Company. You can take aerial tours of either Dayton or Cincinnati , as well as see the wonders of the Ohio countryside.

If you can’t go to Africa, go to The Wilds on day trips from Columbus Ohio! It has open-air safari rides that are $30 a person, and you get to see animals in a “more natural habitat.” (Obviously, they were stolen from their original habitat, but those of us who have a complex with visiting zoos will enjoy this option more.)

The safari takes you around so you can view animals grazing or watering. Animals we saw — zebras, camels, deer, giraffes, and other animals I can’t pronounce.

A Visit to the Miamisburg Mound in Ohio

If you’re looking for a quick getaway with the family for the day, head to Miamisburg Mound, where you’ll find spectacular man-made mounds. These are conical and easy to climb, so if you’re willing to climb up, it makes for a great family photo op.

Miamisburg Mound has a playground area for kids and a picnic area. So you can make a day of it without having to go too far.

Historic Loveland Castle & Museum in Loveland Ohio

You may think the best and most magnificent castles can only be found overseas in Europe. That’s where you’re wrong.

Just over an hour from Columbus, you’ll find Loveland Castle, which came to be when a WWI veteran was inspired to build a French-style castle of his own. Not only can you go exploring, but the castle offers many other services, such as weddings and Cub Scout sleepovers.

As you explore and marvel at the architecture — a mix of German, French, and English construction — you can learn all about Harry (the man who built the castle), play games and puzzles, and keep an eye out for ghosts that reportedly roam around.

If you like medieval swords and weapons, those are displayed throughout the castle as well.

Salt Fork State Park in Lore City Ohio

If you’re a fan of cryptids and cryptology, day trips from Columbus Ohio to explore Ohio’s famous Bigfoot territory are right up your alley. The park has been featured on Animal Planet and is reportedly full of the famous bipeds.

This is also where the annual Ohio Bigfoot Conference is held. So grab your Bigfoot exploration gear, and prepare to go hunting for sasquatch.

As you’ve already read, Ohio is home to some truly great historical sights. At this Hamilton museum, you can take a scenic drive in your car to see this more than 300-acre sculpture park. If you want something a little more adventurous, rent a golf cart for a closer look.

While you’re here, stop at the Ancient Sculpture Museum, where you can see sculptures from many civilizations, including the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians.

Explore Greater Cincinnati Ohio

There’s a lot to do in Cincinnati.

The second time we went to Cincinnati, we visited a few other places worth mentioning — such as the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center , which discussed the harrowing effects of slavery in the United States and current slavery that still exists in the world.

It’s one of those places that you want to be mentally prepared for. It’s thought-provoking and extremely intense to walk through. It features large printed slave ship sketches, a slave pen, etc.

Right outside of the Freedom Center is a waterfront area with a park and suspension bridge to walk on. The suspension bridge goes over the Ohio River and connects Covington Kentucky with Cincinnati.

We also visited the Cincinnati Art Museum , which is free and has a fantastic clothing exhibit and other amazing artwork! It was a beautiful museum to visit. Other places we visited there were Spring Grove Cemetery, which had some beautiful graves and other structures within the arboretum. 

Even though there was a wedding going on and we couldn’t explore the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption completely, we were able to see the nave inside and the beautiful building on the outside. I would like to go back when it’s not full of wedding guests to explore the rest of it.

After sightseeing, we ate dinner at a restaurant called Taft’s Ale House , which boasts a very decadent menu. It was in an old building and had great food, beer, and cocktails.  

Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Brecksville Ohio

2-hour drive from Columbus

Believe it or not, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the only national park in the state of Ohio. You’ll find it north of Columbus and close to Cleveland. If you love nature, you’ll be blown away by the natural beauty found along the Cuyahoga River, including caves, Brandywine Falls , and the Blue Hen waterfall.

If you’re up for hiking trails, there’s a historic canal that you can traverse on foot. That canal connects Ohio to the rest of the country by stretching to Lake Erie in the north.

Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is a wonderland for fans of the gridiron and day trips from Columbus Ohio. You can take a guided tour or tour the Hall of Fame at your leisure, soaking up the history and checking out the busts of some of the greatest players in the National Football League.

Much like the rock hall, you can see exhibits from some of the greatest players. Additionally, you can see some of the game’s greatest artifacts — including jerseys and balls from memorable games.

If you’re a fan of rock and roll, you’ll be as happy as a kid in a candy store with a visit to this Cleveland hallmark. You’ll find multiple floors packed with guitars, costumes, and other memorabilia from all your favorite rock stars — including the Who, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix.

Not only can you see iconic pieces of rock history, but there are plenty of chances for fans to interact. The Garage also allows fans to play instruments along with instructional videos.

A theater lets you see iconic moments in rock-and-roll history, and listening stations let you hear songs that shaped that history.

What to See in Chagrin Falls Ohio

Chagrin Falls is an adorable little suburb of Cleveland. The main area has an old-timey popcorn shop , Jeni’s Ice Cream, and the actual waterfall to view. The town is fun to walk around and explore.  

When we went, we had a Groupon for an adorable bed and breakfast called The Club at Hillbrook . The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and elegant. We ate dinner in the main restaurant, which had cute string lights and overlooked the large property.

You can also walk around the property and enjoy some of the interesting trails and nature nearby.

Enjoy Greater Cleveland Ohio

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Chagrin Falls shouldn’t be the only things you see while you’re in C-town. If the weather is cooperative, you can tour some of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.

If you’re itching to shop, the historic West Side Market offers some of the freshest food you’re likely to find anywhere. Also, check out the Cleveland Arcade, which is home to equally impressive stores and restaurants.

If you’re a fan of “A Christmas Story,” the house used in the movie can be found in the Tremont neighborhood and has been renovated to look exactly as it did in the movie. There are even more  Cleveland day trip  ideas to explore too.

Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky Ohio

If you like the roller coaster theme, you can travel a little further on day trips from Columbus Ohio to visit the Cedar Point Amusement Park, dubbed by some as the “roller coaster capital of the world.”

If you’re looking for extreme coasters, take a ride on the Magnum, Maverick, Millennium Force, and Raptor — just to name a few. If you’re not into coasters, there’s also a water park and resort-like amenities.

Lake Erie Shores & Islands in Sandusky Ohio

Aside from roller coasters, there’s plenty of fun to be had in Sandusky. If you’re up for exploring, visit Paddle and Climb and rent a kayak or paddleboard. Once you launch your vessel of choice, you can spend the day on the water.

Make no mistake, Lake Erie is beautiful all year round. If you go during the summer months, wear a hat and sunscreen, and drink plenty of fluids.

Newport aquarium in newport kentucky.

Just across the river is Newport Kentucky, where I’ve visited the wonderful Newport Aquarium and waterfront area. If you love the sea, you’ll see plenty of animals — including a giant Pacific octopus, sharks, sea turtles, rays, and a giant grouper.

If you’re looking for a fun family day trip from Columbus, especially with young kids, this is the place to go. Your children’s eyes will light up in wonder as they see rare white alligators, penguins, and thousands of the most exotic creatures in the world.

There’s even a rope bridge that crosses over the top of a tank full of sharks. Also, check out one of the newest exhibits, Shipwreck: Realm of the Eels, where you can see a sunken ship and the creatures that live in and around it.

I’ve been to Cincinnati twice to see the aquarium, which is amazing. The aquarium is a great place to visit at any time of the year , but winter is a fun time to visit the turtles and alligators.

The sharks that swim overhead while you’re walking through is a wonderful feature.

Explore Fort Wayne Indiana

2-hour and 45-minute drive from Columbus

You may be thinking to yourself, why would I plan day trips from Columbus Ohio to Fort Wayne? Well, the city has a lot to offer and is home to a lot of history. It has three different rivers, so you have ample opportunity to kayak, canoe, and paddleboard.

The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo has consistently been named one of the nation’s best. And, you can visit the “Old Fort,” a reconstruction of Fort Wayne from 1815.

On top of that, Fort Wayne is home to a thriving cultural district, where you can visit the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, among other attractions.

A Visit to Indianapolis Indiana

During a day trip from Columbus to Indianapolis, you’ll see a beautiful skyline, a thriving sports scene, and lots of history.

If history is your thing, take a gander down Canal Street. You’ll find the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial and the Indiana State Museum on one end of the street. On the other end is a monument to the U.S.S. Indianapolis.

You can also check out the Indianapolis Zoo and the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If you’re hungry, stop for a brew at Rathsekllar, and marvel at the Indy skyline. You can get some delicious German food there too.

Columbus locals may roll their eyes at taking a trip to visit “That School Up North,” but beyond the Michigan-Ohio State football rivalry, Ann Arbor is a town worth checking out. It has been named one of the coolest small towns in America with plenty of shopping and more than 300 bars and restaurants.

If you’re feeling adventurous, visit Gallup Park, Ann Arbor’s most popular recreation area. Here you can rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats. You can go on nature walks, or stop to have a family picnic. If you own a boat, there’s even a boat launch, so you can spend the day fishing or tubing.

Experience Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

Believe it or not, the major Pittsburg metropolis isn’t too far from Columbus, and there’s no shortage of things to see and do. If you love sports, head to PNC Park to catch a Pittsburgh Pirates game.

If you love museums, head to the Carnegie Museum of Art, where you can see awe-inspiring exhibitions that change annually. If you’re looking for great food, you can’t go wrong with a stuffed sandwich from Primanti Bros. or a succulent steak at Butcher in the Rye.

What to See in Louisville Kentucky

3-hour and 15-minute drive from Columbus

Even outside of the Buckeye State, there are awesome destinations for day trips from Columbus Ohio. If you like bourbon, Louisville is the place for you.

There are many bourbon distilleries around the city, and you can pick up a passbook and follow the trail. Also, you can do bourbon tastings, although you won’t see how it’s manufactured.

Some restaurants and bars offer tastings, and the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience is a fun option within the city.

In addition, the boardwalk is a nice place to walk around, and there are good views of the river. There are a lot of places to eat and bars with all sorts of live music. 

Coopers Rock State Forest in Bruceton Mills West Virginia

3-hour and 30-minute drive from Columbus

I just visited Coopers Rock State Forest on our way back from Maryland.  The views are beautiful, and I didn’t get a chance to explore the entire place.

The main lookout point was very crowded with people, although I think it was the time of year and time of day we went. There was perfect October weather in the afternoon! I suspect if you aim to go here in the morning, it will be less crowded, and when you get to some of the main trails it won’t be so bad.

There’s a main overlook area, with pay-to-view finders, and then there are hiking trails you can take that will bring you off the main overlook to an underlook. There’s also a gift shop and a park. If it’s nice out, I think you can really make a full day of it.

Lots of great ideas for our next day trip! You can travel 45 minutes North of Columbus to Marion and see the largest monument to a U.S. president outside of Washington DC, the historically accurate and beautifully restored home of President Warren G. Harding and the newly built presidential museum. A unique experience for sure!

You did not mention Put-in-Bay

No mention of Amish country in Holmes County, one hour and a half south east of Columbus. Enjoy the laid back rural Holmes County, we have the largest Amish population in Ohio. Plenty of shops, hotels, restaurants, Holmes county is visited by people from all over the country and the world. No better place to spend the weekend away from all the hustle and bustle.

Clocking in at just under five hours from Indy, Put-in-Bay is a tropical getaway in the middle of Lake Erie just off the shore of northern Ohio. You’ll take a ferry to the island and find live music, nightlife, great shopping and food, as well as plenty of things to keep you busy! Rent a golf cart to tour the island in style! If the party atmosphere isn’t your style, take the ferry over to nearby Kelleys Island for a more peaceful, secluded atmosphere.

2. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Is there anything better than looking up and seeing the Smoky Mountains in the skyline while you play mini golf, ride an alpine coaster, or walk into a gigantic replica of the Titanic? Pigeon Forge is a family friendly destination with lots of fun attractions, entertainment, and one of the best theme parks in the country – Dollywood! Best of all – you’re a hop, skip, or a jump away from the nation’s most visited National Park. If you’ve never seen it in person – it’s a life changing experience. Nothing like it! And admission to the park is absolutely free. Pigeon Forge is also home to one of the neatest crime museums I’ve ever seen – Alcatraz East Crime Museum is definitely worth a visit!

3. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee may be known worldwide for cheese and beer but there’s so much more!  You can keep busy for several days exploring places like the  Harley-Davidson Museum , the  Milwaukee Public Market , and watching the famous wings open on the  Milwaukee Art Museum .  If you love a good festival – Milwaukee has lots and lots of them including the world’s largest music festival each summer.  The city has an endless amount of great food for all tastes, and don’t forget the beautiful views of Lake Michigan.  Take the time to explore some of the historic downtown neighborhoods and don’t leave without buying a bag of fresh cheese curds for your road trip home.

4. Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park. Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

5. Parke County, Indiana

Parke County, Indiana is best known as the “covered bridge capitol of the world”! Located less than than two hours from downtown Indy, you’ll find a great relaxing destination with some much needed peace and quiet. You can grab an old fashioned map (remember those?) at the local visitors center and then set out to find as many of the historic covered bridges as you can, making it a perfect romantic getaway. Consider booking a room or campsite at Turkey Run State Park, Indiana’s most popular state park, for your home base. They offer brand new, minimalist cabins as well. The park has plenty of great hiking trails for all skill levels.

6. Adventures On The Gorge – Lansing, West Virginia

The New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most impressive architectural feats in American history. One of the many daring activities offered through  Adventures On The Gorge  in Lansing, West Virginia is called “Bridge Walk”. You can literally walk along the catwalk beneath the third highest bridge in the U.S. It’s not for everyone, but an unforgettable experience for thrill seekers! During your stay at the adventure resort, you can zip line, climb trees, enjoy incredible sunsets, and of course – some of the best whitewater rafting in the world.

7. St. Louis, Missouri

The Gateway to the West is more than just the country’s tallest national monument. (630 feet high, in case you were wondering – and yes, you can take a tram all the way up to the top.) Saint Louis is home to Forest Park, which is bigger than New York’s Central Park, and full of free attractions like the Saint Louis Science Center, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum and yes – the award winning Saint Louis Zoo, which is only one of two major zoos in the America with free admission. Enjoy a great meal on “The Hill” – the last still thriving Italian neighborhood in America and take your kids to City Museum – one of the most bizarre, yet incredible places in the midwest. Tour Budweiser, take a stroll at the Missouri Botanical Garden, or try some St. Louis style thin crust pizza or toasted ravioli! Yum!

8. Springfield, Illinois

This is a great road trip idea for history lovers – Abe Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois! You can spend an entire weekend exploring where Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature, worked as a self-taught lawyer, and lived with his family. You can tour the only home he ever owned which is beautifully preserved along with the neighborhood where he lived. Lincoln is also buried in the local cemetery beneath a massive tomb. You can also enjoy some Route 66 history and tour the state’s capitol building as well as the Governor’s mansion.

9. Holland, Michigan

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

Bill’s Advice:  I eat a lot of pizza when I’m on the road and Holland has one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to.  It’s called  Fricano’s Pizza  and sometimes, I have dreams about it.

10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Famous for having more bridges than any other U.S. city, Pittsburgh is a terrific destination for a weekend or extended getaway. You can take in a baseball game with beautiful views of the Sixth Street Bridge, take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, or visit the city’s quirky bicycle museum. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, Pittsburgh was his home town and you can spend a day exploring all things Mr. Rogers – including seeing the very sets from the iconic television show and his puppets!

11. Owensboro, Kentucky

Just south of Evansville is the bluegrass music capitol of the world – Owensboro, Kentucky. If you like the idea of watching local bands in a barn, taste testing bourbon, eating good barbecue, or catching catfish – you’ll love this place. Owensboro is also home to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and music legend Bill Monroe. You can even tour his childhood home .

12. Cincinnati, Ohio

There’s a lot to see and do in Cincinnati! One of my favorite museums – The American Sign Museum is alone worth the road trip. Downtown you’ll find some fun places to eat, catch a game at Great American Ballpark, or take a stroll along the Ohio river on the beautiful hiking and biking trails. If you take a short drive (or walk) across the bridge downtown you’ll wind up in Covinginton, Kentucky. This historic town that was once notorious for gangsters is now a lovely area with dining and shopping, plus great views looking back at the Cincinnati skyline. Speaking of “skyline” – Cincy’s famous chili is available all over town. (I’m not personally a fan – but a lot of people like it!)

13. Madison, Wisconsin

The state capital of Wisconsin is constantly ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S.  Madison is also a fun college town with lots of things to do – though its best to visit in the spring and summer months if you hate cold weather.  My favorite thing to do in Madison is the Dane County Farmer’s Market that wraps around the entire Capitol building. Patrons all walk in one direction to shop for fresh produce and local goods.  Of course, State Street is full of action – all seven blocks between downtown and the University of Wisconsin campus. You can find food (140 restaurants!) unique stores, and plenty of entertainment day or night.

Bill’s Advice:  Tour the beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol, and enjoy some time relaxing near the water.  (You can ice skate in the winter months)  For a quirky stop – a short drive to Middleton will get you to the  National Mustard Museum !

14. Nashville, Tennessee

Music City USA has seen a major boom in recent years. Along with the treasures that have always made Nashville great, there are brand new attractions and businesses making it one of the hottest cities in the south.  For country music fans – the Hall of Fame is a great bet, along with a tour of the  Ryman Auditorium  and  Grand Ole Opry.   These days, Broadway is a happening street akin to Times Square in New York City.  Bars, live music, and plenty of good people watching.  Check out an exact replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, and be sure to try some authentic Nashville Hot Chicken while you’re in town!

Bill’s Advice:  Nashville is great for a weekend but definitely plenty to do for an extended visit or vacation.  It’s also one of the most popular cities on the list – which means it’s going to be busy.  Brace yourself for crazy traffic, higher than average prices to park your car downtown, and lots of people.  To save a bit of money, consider staying in one of the many communities that surround Nashville or out near the airport.  If you’re a country music fan – the George Jones Museum is a must! If not, you can still check out the rooftop bar on the fourth floor with great views of the river.

15. Door County, Wisconsin

One of the prettiest destinations in all of the midwest is Door County, Wisconsin. With its welcoming small communities, abundance of outdoor adventure, and of course – cherries galore – it makes for a perfect road trip. Be sure to check out the goats walking atop the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish restaurant in Sister Bay, take a sunset cruise from Fish Creek to capture some beautiful photos, and of course if your timing is right – pick some fresh cherries in one of the many orchards in the area.

Bill’s Advice: Be sure to pop into the Wisconsin Visitors Center and pick up a cheese map! You’ll find every location for fresh cheese and cheese curds all of the state. It’s fantastic!

16. Louisville, Kentucky

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously.

17. Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa

Talk about getting your bang for the buck – how often do you get four destinations packed into a single stop?  The Quad Cities is made up of five towns that share the Illinois-Iowa border.  (Yes, “quad” makes no sense as there are five and not four – but believe me, they know.)  It’s best known as the world headquarters for John Deere, and visitors can tour multiple historical spots that tell the story of the famous company.  Take a quick side trip up to LeClaire on the Iowa side to see where the show American Pickers began.

Bill’s Advice:  Try some Whitey’s Ice Cream while you’re in the region because it’s amazing!  It is seriously so good that it’s the first thing I want to do when I pass through the region.  I’ve interviewed the family that owns it – and they’re very nice!

18. Fort Wayne, Indiana

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.

19. Indiana Dunes National Park

So let’s be honest, Indiana isn’t exactly a great place to live if you crave frequent road trips to the ocean. Florida? California? Better save some money for gas. However, it’s an easy trip to some of the beaches along beautiful Lake Michigan. Often underrated are the northern beaches of the midwest which are often less crowded, cleaner, and have sunsets that are just as beautiful. You can sit back and relax, rent a paddle board or kayak and watch your kids burn off energy running up and down the impressive sand dunes.

20. Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, known to locals as “C-Bus” is the capitol city of Ohio. It’s been going through major growth over the last decade and is a destination worthy of a road trip. The sprawling downtown is easily accessible with the new CBUS Circulator, free to use for visitors. Check out the Short North Arts District for galleries, dining, and locally owned shopping. Local attractions include the Franklin Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the COSI Science Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Columbus Zoo which is one of the best in the country. Be sure to take a free tour of the Ohio state capitol building as well!

I take pride in knowing about little gems and attractions.

That’s why I was floored to learn about Columbus, Indiana that’s known for modern architecture. It’s only 1.5 hours away from Cincinnati making it a great day trip destination. 

I found out about Columbus, Indiana at a Travel Media Showcase and I became obsessed with going there ever since.

Why you ask?

Here are 10 reasons why you should add Columbus to your day trip or road trip list

1. You Can Take An Architectural Tour

This is a MUST for architecture lovers!

The American Institue of Architects ranked Columbus, Indiana 6th in the nation for architectural innovation.

What’s even more amazing is that Columbus is a city of around 46,000, ranking among major cities for architecture.

International artists and architecture are featured in over 90 buildings and public art. I’m a huge fan of architecture and Columbus is truly a gem for the magnitude of what it offers in such a small city.

An architectural tour is a great way to get an overview of the architecture in the area.

The architectural tour starts with a film in the Center that gives an overview of the city and its history.

Admire the Bright Yellow Chihuly Chandelier

Make sure that you appreciate the Dale Chihuly chandelier located inside the Visitor Center before you start your tour.

Next, you step outside and will learn about a few nearby structures. The 2-hour tour will drive you by 40 significant structures and works of art and inside two structures availability permitting.

The architectural tour takes you inside two unique churches that are architectural works of art.

The First Christian Church

The First Christian Church pictured above was completed in 1942 and is believed to be the first modern church in the United States.

A Hexagonal Shaped Church

North Christian Church is a U.S. National Historic landmark, hexagonal in shape, and was built in 1964.

I’ve never seen a church like this before. The pipe organ inside is also a functional work of art.

2. You Can Literally Get Flushed Away at the Kids Commons

Plus it’s just fun to “flush” yourself down the World’s Largest Toliet slide in the Kids Commons Children’s Museum.

Art meets function at this free playground that is located across the street from Kids Commons. The 5,000-square-foot indoor playground includes a play structure where kids can climb the 35 foot tall Lucky Climber.

The perfect spot to burn off some energy all year round. This is a great indoor option for families who want to take a break from the weather outside. 

4. Great meals with downtown charm

I enjoyed a great burger at 4th Street Bar and also received great service and insider local intel for what makes Columbus special from our server, Dewayne.

5. You Can See A Lot of Art Within a Few Blocks of Downtown Columbus

A majority of the art and architecture in downtown Columbus is located within a few blocks. You can easily cover a lot of ground and see a lot.

6. Get  inspired by design from the past that feels like the present at The Miller House and Garden Tour 

If you love architecture or Mad Men, you will LOVE this tour! This private residence was ahead of the times and is extremely interesting.

Designed by architects and designers Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard, and Dan Kiley, you will definitely enjoy learning more about the style and function on the inside.

You can take pictures outside but you are not allowed to take pictures inside unless you are on the photo tour.

7. Sweet Treats and Nostalgia at Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum

Try a “Green River” fountain soda or enjoy an ice cream sundae that comes with your own gravy boat for your topping.

The perfect spot to enjoy a sweet treat surrounded by the remnants of another era.

The history of this building dates back to the 1900s and there is an incredible collection of fountain sodas and memorabilia to view.

You can also listen to a restored 1870s orchestrion.

8. Take in gorgeous views The Inn at Irwin Gardens Bed and Breakfast

Unfortunately, there was a private event going on during our visit but the views from the sidewalk made me want to come back.

The Irwin Gardens Bed and Breakfast looks like a beautiful place to stay which is also in the heart of the downtown.

9. Lots of recreational options

We made a quick trip to climb the observation tower at Mill Race Park before leaving town.

Columbus offers miles of bike trails and a variety of recreational parks.

10 Columbus, Indiana is centrally located to major cities .

Columbus is centrally located between Indianapolis, Louisville, and Cincinnati which made Columbus a great day trip.

Great place to visit, to live… not so much. Terrible place for small businesses. Columbus is tough on mom and pop businesses.

We do love the tourist $$. It’s a great place if you’re one of the “haves” and a really screwed up place if you’re one of the many “have nots”.

One-Day Itinerary In Columbus, Indiana

There's no battle of old vs. new in this south-central Indiana town, where world-class modern architecture marries local quaintness.

It's Friday afternoon in Columbus, Indiana, where fans of modern design travel 40 miles south of Indianapolis to see more than 90 buildings created by architects of international renown. What they also find is a community equally proud of its public art and historic downtown.

Beginning in the 1940s, industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller brought a vision to his hometown, helping fund the building of local civic structures—as long as architects were chosen from a list that reads like the honor roll of contemporary design. The result? Buildings by Eero and Eliel Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Deborah Berke, and other celebrated architects.

Plan to carve out an entire afternoon to explore Columbus' downtown of colorful restaurants, shops and an independent bookstore. Swing by the Visitors Center or download a free app for orientation to the architectural sights via foot, bike or car. It's a town that loves modern, so there's always something fresh to do.

9:30 a.m. Coffee and Arch Views

Start at Lucabe Coffee Company for a masala tea or Rosie's Latte to go. While the caffeine kicks in, explore the brick plaza outside the I.M. Pei-designed public library. From here, check out the organic curves of sculptor Henry Moore's 20-foot-tall bronze Large Arch .

10:30 a.m. Amazing Space

Cross the plaza to First Christian Church, where the town's building revolution began in 1942. Designed by Eliel Saarinen, the worship center, sunken gardens and 166-foot-tall bell tower fill a city block.

11 a.m. Walk and Play

Burn off energy with a three-block walk to The Commons, a glass-enclosed community space with a stage, event center and restaurants. Set little ones loose at the free indoor playground and on the 35-foot-tall climbing structure.

12 p.m. Taste of Nostalgia

If a sandwich and sundae sound like the perfect lunch combo, slide into a counter seat at Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor, a 122-year-old shop with Victorian vibes. Take a brief stroll around the Bartholomew County Courthouse. With a clock tower topped by delicate ironwork, it strikes quite a contrast from mod neighbors.

2 p.m. Design School

At the cozy Sixth Street Arts Alley, you can snap a selfie in front of a colorful mural. Around the corner is the Columbus Visitors Center, where a tour of the Miller House and Garden begins at 2:45. Book advance tickets to visit this midcentury masterpiece. (Other tour times available if those fit better into your day.)

Distance from Cincinnati: About 1 hour

Yellow Springs is also often home to festivals, markets, street fairs and other events.

Santa Claus, Indiana

Have you ever wanted to experience the magic of Christmas year round? Then head to Santa Claus, Indiana. The Christmas-themed town is also home to Holiday World amusement park and Splashin' Safari water park. Outside of the amusement and water park, Santa Claus also has restaurants, shops and a museum that tells the origin of the town and its name.

Red River Gorge

Distance from Cincinnati: About 2 hours

With more than 100 natural sandstone arches, Red River Gorge , which lies within Daniel Boone National Forest, is a gorgeous oasis for hiking, rock climbing, camping and more just a couple hours away from Cincinnati. The gorge has plenty of popular hiking trails that vary in difficulty for all experience levels. There's also zipline tours, underground kayak tours and more to enjoy.

Ohio Caverns

Known as "America's most colorful caverns," the Ohio Caverns are roughly two hours north of Cincinnati. Guests can take a tour of two different parts of the underground caverns in the summer and one part in the winter. The tours feature stalactites and other formations that were first explored in 1897.

Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Located in Logan, Ohio, Hocking Hills State Park is a breathtaking state park that's only a couple hours away from Cincinnati. Cedar Falls is also a park highlight that showcases some beautiful rock walls and waterfalls.

Little Nashville

Wanting to enjoy Nashville without driving all the way to Tennessee? Well, head on out to Nashville, Indiana AKA Little Nashville. Nestled smack dab in the middle of the state, Columbus is near some of the top destinations in Ohio, the Midwest, and even the south. Its convenient location makes visiting the state’s biggest cities and the natural splendor of the Hocking Hills region all the more enticing. Not to mention, Columbus road trippers can reach southern stops in Kentucky and West Virginia around just three hours.

So, the next time you’re free, check out this comprehensive list of the best weekend road trips from Columbus, Ohio.

1. Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio

Hocking Hills State Park is, by and large, Ohio’s most popular state park. Nestled in Southeastern Ohio where the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains meet a lush state forest, it’s not surprising why. Visitors from far and wide flock to relish the park’s dramatic caves, overhanging cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. A weekend at Hocking Hills also offers an opportunity to hike miles of trails, kayak in the river, and zipline through the treetops.

Columbus is the capital of the mid-western state of Ohio, and also its largest city.

Known for its numerous parks and world famous university, Columbus is also centrally located between Ohio’s two other big cities: Cleveland and Cincinnati.

It is in the perfect location to be used as a base to gain access to the entire state.

Within reach of Ohio are many opportunities for day tripping, with many historic mid-west cities and towns, such as Newark and Dayton, just a short drive away.

Nature lovers will find plenty of State Parks with hiking trails, cascading waterfalls and beautiful woodland scenery to explore.

Far north of Ohio lies the huge Lake Erie, along with the state’s only National Park: Cuyahoga National Park.

Around the state there are underground caverns, caves and even ancient Native American earthworks: lasting relics from a time long ago that have survived to this day and are an important part of the region’s long history.

1. Hocking Hills

Just southeast of Columbus is the Hocking Hills State Park, a must do day trip from the city that takes you to some of the most unusual rock formations in Ohio.

Hocking Hills is the site of caves, cliffs and crevasses, with short and long hikes connecting different parts of the park, as well as opportunities for kayaking, rock climbing and even zip lining.

The real highlight of the Hocking Hills is the cavernous Ash Cave, which forms a huge open recess in the rock that can be walked in and around.

Aside from the Ash Cave, there are many other rock formations to visit; don’t miss out on Cedar Falls, a spectacular waterfall which plunges over giant rocks.

2. Cuyahoga National Park

Cuyahoga National Park is Ohio’s only National Park.

Found north of Columbus and close to the city of Cleveland, it is a stunning area of natural beauty that follows the course of the Cuyahoga River, containing walking and cycling trails, waterfalls, and caves to discover.

The National Park also has an historical canal that can be traversed on foot.

This was the first canal in the state, stretching to Lake Erie in the north.

It allowed Ohio to be opened up to the rest of the country and the world by providing a means of entry and exit for people and goods.

The small, unassuming city of Dayton has played a huge role in the history of aviation.

This is where the Wright Brothers came from, and where they built their first aircraft; going down in history as the pioneers of modern flight.

Dayton, just a day trip away from Columbus, should be visited to see where flight really began.

Today it is also home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, a very fitting location for one of the largest aviation museums in the world.

Newark is just 40 miles away, and is a great retreat from the big city.

Here you can find the world’s largest basket, which is actually a huge, company headquarters building shaped and designed to look like a basket.

There is also the interesting Works Museum: a museum dedicated to Newark’s industrial and technical history, where you can learn about glass blowing and canal building alongside the history of the region.

Around Newark there are also numerous ancient earthworks: huge mounds constructed by old Native Indian civilizations, that have survived to this day.

5. Miamisburg Mound

The Indian mounds aren’t only found around Newark, but exist in most of the state of Ohio.

One of the most interestingly shaped is the towering, conical Miamisburg Mound, raised on a high ridge and visible from miles away.

At 65-feet tall, it features a staircase through the center of the grassy mound which takes visitors to the top for panoramic views out over the surrounding area.

The Mound is one of thousands that have been discovered, the relics of lost civilizations, but Miamisburg is unique because of its height; few other surviving mounds can match it for size.

6. Olentangy Indian Caverns

If you are interested in Native American history, then another great day trip from Ohio is a journey to the Olentangy Indian Caverns.

This natural cave system was used by the local native Huron people as shelter.

The caverns stretch over three floors and would have provided a refuge and safe haven in times of war, being difficult to find from above ground, let alone enter.

The caverns can be explored on underground tours led by local guides.

7. Tecumseh

Tecumseh is not a place, but a historical show that has to be seen when visiting Ohio.

This is an outdoor drama set in the hills of Ohio, and it tells the story of the local Indians; in particular the chief Tecumseh, who tried in vain to defend his land and people from colonization in the 1700s.

Because it is held outdoors, the show is only performed in the summer months, but it is worth scheduling your Columbus trip to coincide with a showing, as it receives accolades worldwide.

8. Amish Country Ohio

Northeast of Ohio is Amish Country, made up of several towns and cities, the largest of which is Millersburg.

This is a completely different world, where the Amish communities live in varied ways according to their beliefs in the Bible, meaning there is little technology and lots of faith.

You will see horse drawn carriages on the roads and traditional houses in the towns, while many of the communities actually speak Pennsylvania Dutch as their first language, rather than English.

9. Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns is a huge underground cave system with miles of passageways and underground rivers that feed the region’s entire water system.

The cave is multi-layered and to date there are seven underground levels which can be explored.

Guides will take intrepid visitors through the system; exploring the caverns and narrow passages that lead further and further down.

It’s not known how deep the system really goes, but it’s certainly a long way.

10. Ludlow Falls

Ohio has an abundance of beautiful waterfalls due to its rocky landscape, but Ludlow Falls stands out amongst them as a spectacular cascade.

Located near Dayton, not far from Columbus, Ludlow Falls is in fact hidden away beneath a bridge, making it difficult to spot.

The walk there is easy as long as you know where you are going, and it’s a quiet, secluded spot to enjoy Ohio’s enticing natural scenery.

11. Clifton Mill

Clifton Mill is a beautifully scenic piece of Ohio heritage which dates back to 1802. The Mill is on the banks of the Clifton River, and is spectacular to see, with man-made waterfalls cascading down from its position above the river.

The Mill is water powered, and these days is more of a tourist attraction than a working mill.

There’s an on-site restaurant, and at Christmas time they put on an extravagant light display that’s famous across the state.

12. The Wilds, Cumberland

The Wilds is a unique, open-air Safari in Cumberland Ohio, where the animals roam free and visitors are taken around on big safari trucks to see rare and endangered wildlife in natural settings.

The Wilds is a non-profit organization; they put the animals first, and that’s why the facility is so popular.

They have species from across the world and educate people on conservation and responsibility rather than just providing entertainment at the expense of the captive animals.

13. Salt Fork State Park

Salt Fork State Park is the largest of Ohio’s state parks, covering huge areas of forest east of Columbus.

It’s a beautiful place to hike, bike and get into the heart of Ohio’s natural environment, but it’s also known locally for the legend of Big Foot.

Believe what you will, but local lore says that it’s the home of this mythical creature.

Reported sightings have been made all across Salt Fork since the first European settlers arrived in the 1700s.

Documentaries have been filmed here and hardcore explorers head out into the wild to try and find this legendary creature.

They even hold a Big Foot conference here to celebrate this monstrous legend.

14. Cincinnati

An hour and a half south of Columbus is the city of Cincinnati: the third largest city in Ohio.

It’s the home of the Cincinnati Reds, the oldest baseball team in America.

Once just a sprawling industrial city, Cincinnati has reinvented itself as a tourist destination, offering great food and a growing cultural scene, all spread along the banks of the Ohio River.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is located between Cleveland and Akron along the Cuyahoga River. It’s one of the nation’s 61 National Parks and the only National Park in Ohio . Inside the park, you’ll find forests, hills, hiking trails , and waterfalls. Highlights include Beaver Marsh, Brandywine Falls, The Ledges, Blue Hen Falls, and The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

2. The Wilds 

The Wilds, located in Cumberland, is one of the most unique places you’ll find in Ohio . Without leaving the midwest, you can experience an open-air safari tour at this 9,000+ acre non-profit wildlife park and conservation center (which is a partner of the Columbus Zoo ). You’ll get to see some incredible animals, including zebras, rhinos, antelopes, giraffes, cheetahs, and more.

3. Hocking Hills State Park 

Hocking Hills State Park in Logan is a gorgeous area for enjoying the outdoors and one of the most popular day trips from Columbus, Ohio . You’ll find plenty of hiking , mountain biking, and camping. If you want to make this an overnight trip, there are lots of great cabins to choose from. I enjoyed the private cabins at the Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls and Cherry Ridge Retreat for a romantic getaway.

4. Mad River Mountain

Mad River Mountain is Ohio’s largest ski and snowboard resort . Located in Zanesfield, it’s a great spot to learn to ski for the first time or to hone your skills close to home. As part of Vail Resorts, you can even use your Epic Pass here.

5. Ohio Caverns 

Ohio Caverns has crystal stalactites, stalagmites, and other amazing formations. The caverns are the largest in the state and are recognized as “America’s Most Colorful Caverns.”

You can take a guided tour that lasts about 1 hour, and don’t forget to bring a jacket — the caverns remain at a constant 54 degrees throughout the year.

6. Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum

Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum, located in Hamilton (in Butler County ), is a fantastic 300+ acre outdoor sculpture park that you can drive through in your car, or you can rent a golf cart (I highly recommend this). Be sure to stop into the Ancient Sculpture Museum to see the Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Syrian, and Egyptian sculptures that date back to 1550 B.C.

7. Young’s Jersey Dairy

Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs is a great spot to visit with young kids. You’ll find different events and activities throughout the year, including mini-golf, goats and cows, rides, pumpkin picking, and more! If you’re visiting in late summer, be sure to check out the sunflower field in Yellow Springs, too.

8. Newport Aquarium

The Newport Aquarium isn’t in Ohio, actually. It’s located across the river from Cincinnati in Newport, Kentucky, but it’s still close enough to make a great day trip.

My favorite parts were the giant Pacific octopus (seriously, the trip is worth it to see this guy alone!), the 2 white alligators, and the huge tank that features sharks, a sea turtle, a giant 300lb grouper, and shark rays.

9. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is a must-visit for anyone who loves music. The museum features traditional exhibits along with The Garage, a hands-on area featuring 12 instrument stations with instructional videos to try. The museum’s building and iconic glass pyramid were designed by famed architect I.M. Pei , who also designed the pyramid in front of The Louvre in Paris, France.

10. Salt Fork State Park

This isn’t just another state park. Salt Fork State Park, located in Guernsey County , is legendary for its ties to the legend of Bigfoot . It’s also Ohio’s biggest state park , covering over 17,000 acres of land. At the park, you’ll find a walk-through archery course, a lake for fishing and boating, a dog park, golf and mini-golf, a beach for swimming, over 14 hiking trails, and more.

11. National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

The National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton is the world’s largest military aviation museum . It houses over 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles and features exhibits illustrating military aviation history. There’s also a flight simulator and 3D theater.

12. Kings Island

King’s Island is an amusement park located just north of Cincinnati in Mason, Ohio. It’s been around since the 1970s and was even featured on The Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch ! Highlights include thrill rides, Planet Snoopy, and Soak City Water Park.

13. Pro Football Hall of Fame

The Pro Football Hall of Fame, located in Canton, is a mecca for football. You can wander the Hall of Fame at your leisure or take a guided tour.

14. The Farm at Walnut Creek 

The Farm at Walnut Creek, located in Sugarcreek, Ohio, is a working farm that features over 500 animals, including giraffes, camels, zebras, and kangaroos. You can drive along the 2.3-mile trail or take a horse-drawn wagon ride to feed the animals.

15. Loveland Castle

Did you know that you can visit a castle — in Ohio?! Loveland Castle is located in Loveland and was built in the 1920s. You can take a self-guided tour, explore the grounds, play games, or enjoy a picnic by the river.

16. Ohio Bird Sanctuary

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary, located in Mansfield, is home to over 30 different species of birds who, because of injuries, can’t live in the wild. The 90-acre preserve also has hiking trails, a children’s play area, and picnic areas.

17. Cedar Bog Nature Preserve
