To Celebrate Two Albums Released Earlier This Year

The Book of Making and Yesterday Meets Today

The Grammy Award-winning, Austin-based guitarist and songwriter Eric Johnson is hitting the road early next year after a long break when, like everyone, he was forced to cut his Spring 2020 tour a week short after the lockdown occurred. The Treasure Tour kicks off on February 11, 2023 in Houston, TX and will continue through April 2 right back in Texas at the Aztec Theatre in San Antonio. The tour will pick up once again for Leg 2 on September 8 in North Carolina before concluding on October 12 in Tulsa, OK. Full itinerary is below.

The Treasure Tour will celebrate Johnson’s TWO new separate albums, The Book of Making and Yesterday Meets Today , released this past July via his new partnership with Blue Élan Records.

It was during the mandatory ‘lockdown vacation’ that all of us endured throughout 2020 when Johnson realized, “I have the time, let’s go through the vaults and see what’s there.” What he found was enough material to emerge with two albums featuring nine songs on each LP. The Grammy-winning, multi-genre guitarist took inventory—both emotionally and musically—delving into the many unfinished tracks, outtakes, demos, and sonic ideas in his archive to compile the 18 songs that ultimately ended up on the albums.

“I started pulling these recordings out of the vault at my studio. Some were professionally done, some were just scratch tapes, some were rehearsal recordings on cassette,” Johnson explains . The music spanned 25 years of “creations, thoughts and ideas that remained unfinished for many years.” In some of the deeply moving music Johnson discovered a “certain personal magic” and decided to allow song cuts to remain as they were initially created. Others were embellished; a few songs are new.

Among Johnson’s many accolades are a Grammy award for “Cliffs of Dover ” (a track from his Platinum certified Ah Via Musicom), ten more Grammy nominations, lifetime induction into the Guitar Player Gallery of Greats and his listing among the “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century” by Musician . In his hometown of Austin TX, a city full of guitarists, the readers of the Austin Chronicle have voted Eric Johnson the city’s “Best Electric Guitarist” and “Best Acoustic Guitarist” in their yearly poll year after year. They also named him “Electric Guitarist of the Decade” and one of the top five “Musicians of the Decade” .

Eric Johnson Sparkles with his Treasure Tour at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia, Sunday, March 26, 2023

  • March 27, 2023
  • International Concert Reviews
  • by Elliott Gordon Photographer/Assistant Editor

Located in the eclectic downtown Atlanta neighborhood of Little Five Points , the Variety Playhouse welcomed Grammy Award winner Eric Johnson to town on a stormy Sunday night. Erected in 1940, this converted World War II era movie theater is one of the more intimate and charming musical venues around town, with a posted capacity of 1,000. The main seating area has theater-style chairs, and while I have been to shows here where the front area of the stage was sold as reserved seating as well, Johnson’s concert remained as open general admission space.

With music compiled during the COVID-imposed pause to live touring, Johnson is now back out on the road supporting his most recently released set of two separate albums , The Book of Making and Yesterday Meets Today . He returned to Atlanta with band support from Roscoe Beck (bass), Wayne Salzmann (drums), and Dave Scher (guitar/keyboards). Ironically, I attended Johnson’s final Classics: Present and Past tour date here on March 11, 2020, before touring went dark, so I welcomed the opportunity to finally catch him again.

What makes Johnson’s Treasure Tour so special is his approach to the set, which was divided into separate acoustic and electric parts. Taking the stage at approximately 8:15pm with just Beck in tow, Johnson unassumingly took his seat with acoustic in hand and started the evening off with “Resolution.” For the next 45 minutes or so, Johnson and Beck entertained the attentive crowd with a selection of a thirteen acoustic tunes, including a cover of Paul Simon’s “April Come She Will,” and “The Ballad of Elrod and Girlene,” a track Johnson joked was inspired by his desire to write a hillbilly-type song due to growing up listening to artists like Hank Williams . The entire set felt like a cozy coffeehouse performance with library-level silence expected by the audience.

Following a roughly 20-minute intermission, Johnson and crew returned to the stage and launched into “Righteous,” the immediately recognizable fan-favorite from his certified platinum 1990 release, Ah Via Musicom . Johnson’s Stratocaster guitar tone continues to be uniquely distinct and delicious, and while the 68-year-old is certainly an elder statesman now, his playing remains timeless. It is almost hard to believe that I first saw him perform as far back as 1991.

Similar in length to the acoustic set, the band performed a dozen tracks plugged in, including a cover of “Freeway Jam,” which was an amazing and emotional tribute to the late, great Jeff Beck . Following the Jimi Hendrix cover of “Little Wing” with Scher on vocals, the band rolled into “S.R.V.” from Johnson’s third studio album, Venus Isle (1996), as the build up to the main set finale. When the final chords of “S.R.V.” had faded, the stage lights did as well, leaving only Johnson highlighted as he mesmerized fans with an elongated solo that concluded with the familiar chords of his signature song, “Cliffs of Dover.” Following a standing ovation, the band exited the stage briefly, returning to wrap up the night with an encore performance of Johnson’s Grammy-nominated instrumental, “Zap.”

This initial run of Johnson’s Treasure Tour runs through this Sunday, April 2, where it will wrap up at the Aztec Theatre in San Antonio, Texas. The tour then picks up again on August 31 and will continue on through October 12, where it will conclude at the Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Eric Johnson: Treasure Tour 2023

Eric Johnson has been traveling on a prolific odyssey over the course of more than four decades. Along the way, his creations have encompassed repertoire that cross pollinate genres which include rock, blues, jazz, fusion, soul, folk, new-age, classical and even country. Inevitably, E.J. says it best himself in sharing, “It really boils down to the music and the song at the end of the day,” he explains. “If it doesn’t have that it gets boring for me. The most important thing for me is to grow musically and make a more expansive and meaningful artistic statement with every new project.”

During the Pandemic, the Grammy winning guitarist, vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist has been busy releasing weekly, donation-based, virtual “Mini-Lessons” benefitting Food Banks across the country and working in the studio on previously un-released tracks and new recordings. The currently untitled new record is scheduled for release later this year.

Throughout his career, Johnson has approached music as a healing force, a way to enhance a listener’s consciousness, and conjure joy and inspiration. More than a year into the Pandemic, and because of the Pandemic, he reflects that this approach has become reinforced and more enhanced.

Eric Johnson – Treasure Tour 2023

September 8, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

ERIC JOHNSON PLANS EXTENSIVE U.S. TOUR FOR 2023 TITLED “TREASURE TOUR”

Austin, Texas… Eric Johnson has been traveling on a prolific odyssey over the course of more than four decades.

During the pandemic, the Grammy-winning guitarist, vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist released weekly donation-based “Mini Guitar Lessons” benefiting Food Banks across the country and worked in the studio on previously un-released tracks and new recordings. These tracks resulted in the release of new 2 records entitled “The Book Of Making” and “Yesterday Meets Today” in July of 2022 on Blue Élan Records. The purchase of both albums includes the keys to a third album, “Takeouts” which includes unreleased and alternate recordings of songs available as an exclusive download.

The 2022 Treasure Tour will feature some of the previously un-released gems, some new songs, and some older favorites. His band will include Tom Brechtlein on drums, and Roscoe Beck on bass.

Eric Johnson’s Treasure Tour

Eric Johnson has been traveling on a prolific odyssey over the course of more than four decades. Along the way, his creations have encompassed repertoire that cross pollinate genres which include rock, blues, jazz, fusion, soul, folk, new-age, classical and even country. Inevitably E.J. says it best himself in sharing. “It really boils down to the music and the song at the end of the day,” he explains. “If it doesn’t have that it gets boring for me. The most important thing for me is to grow musically and make a more expansive and meaningful artistic statement with every new project.”

Among Johnson’s many accolades are a Grammy award for “Cliffs Of Dover ” (a track from his Platinum certified Ah Via Musicom ), lifetime induction into the Guitar Player Gallery of Greats, his listing among the “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century” by Musician. In his hometown of Austin TX, a city full of guitarists the readers of the Austin Chronicle have voted Johnson the city’s “Best Electric Guitarist” and “Best Acoustic Guitarist” in their yearly poll year after year. They also named him “Electric Guitarist of the Decade” and one of the top five “Musicians of the Decade”.

During the Pandemic, the Grammy winning guitarist, vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist has been busy releasing weekly, donation-based, virtual “Mini Lessons” benefitting Food Banks across the country and working in the studio on previously un-released tracks and new recordings.

The 2022 Treasure Tour will feature some of the previously un-released gems, some new songs, and some older favorites. His band will include Tom Brechtlein on drums, and Roscoe Beck on bass.
