Small Ship Cruises in Galapagos

Explore the amazing Galapagos Islands aboard a small ship cruise. Discover the birthplace of Darwins ' Theory of Evolution '.

A Galapagos small ship cruise should be high on most people's destination bucket list. For many, the Galapagos Islands hold a certain amount of intrigue to those seeking one of the few remaining spectacular wildlife encounters on Earth. With its raw, natural beauty and amazing wildlife, the isolated Galapagos Islands are best visited by boat, and more specifically, a luxury cruise or liveaboard boat offering different levels of accommodation onboard. Taking a Galapagos small ship cruise ensures you will gain access to some of the best visitor sites, most of which are close to bigger cruise ships.

To preserve the natural beauty of the Galapagos Islands, the Galapagos National Park has reduced the number of guests to the visitor sites by requiring boats to wait 14 days before returning to the same area. This means that most boats offer alternating itineraries to cover as many of the best Galapagos sites as possible. Escape the crowds and explore the islands on a Galapagos Cruise in small groups and with experienced naturalist guides. All Galapagos small ship cruises have 12 - 100 passengers, ensuring a more personalized service and experience.

The Galapagos Islands were first made famous when British scientist Charles Darwin based his ‘ Theory of Evolution ’ on his findings there. Made up of a cluster of around 13 volcanic islands, around 95% of this area is now part of the Galapagos National Park system and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

A Galapagos cruise will offer a truly unique experience. From the stunning landscapes, which look like something from the Jurassic Age, to the endemic wildlife with up to 26 species native to these islands and in their natural habitat, there is nowhere else on earth like the Galapagos Islands.

Best Galapagos Tours

While there are many things to see and do in the Galapagos, some of the best Galapagos tours involve visiting the below destinations;

Española Island - Expedition cruises to Española Island in the Galapagos offer the unique opportunity to observe the world's only waved albatross breeding site, along with stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, including the famous blue-footed boobies and marine iguanas.

Baltra Island - The home of the first airport in the Galapagos Islands, Baltra Island is where many Galapagos cruises start and finish.

Charles Darwin Research Station  - Located close to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island airport, a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station is usually at the start or the end of the trip. The station is an information center, library, museum, and breeding ground for tortoises that will be introduced into the wild.

Tortuga Bay - located on Santa Cruz Island- gets its name from the black sea turtles that lay their eggs here. With a beautiful white sandy beach, Tortuga Bay also offers amazing snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands.

Fernandina Island - the youngest and one of the most pristine islands in the Galapagos, provides unparalleled opportunities to see unique species like the flightless cormorant and vast lava fields untouched by invasive species.

Darwin Bay -  located on Genovesa Island, this white sand coral beach is a great place to snorkel and appreciate the abundant wildlife in the water. It is the perfect way to see amazing wildlife up close!

Rabida Island - enchants visitors with its striking red sand beaches, diverse birdlife, including flamingos and brown pelicans, and excellent snorkeling opportunities among vibrant marine life.

El Chato Tortoise Reserve - Also located in Santa Cruz, the El Chato Tortoise Reserve is divided into 2 areas, Chato & Caseta. During the dry season, the reserve offers visitors the chance to observe Giant Tortoises in the wild.

Floreana Island - located at the south of the Galapagos Islands, Floreana is home to the ‘Post Office Bay’, where whalers placed an unofficial post box in the hope their letters would get sent home, as well as a great place to spot flamingos and sea turtles.

Isabela Island - the largest island in the archipelago, Isabela was formed by 5 young volcanoes joining together. With extensive lava fields in the north, dense vegetation, and unique red mangroves in the south, Isabela Island offers many great visitor sites in the Galapagos.

Chinese Hat - a small islet off the coast of Santiago Island in the Galapagos, offering a close-up view of volcanic formations, a thriving sea lion colony, and a unique landscape shaped remarkably like its namesake.

Best Time to Cruise Galapagos

Due to its proximity to the equator, the Galapagos Islands see very little rainfall, and there is no best time to visit the Galapagos Islands to see wildlife. The area has 2 main seasons: the warm, wet season from late December to June or the cool, dry season from July to early December, which means there are amazing Galapagos itineraries year-round. Galapagos in January - May is the time when green sea turtles and marine and land iguanas start nesting. In contrast, June marks the start of the breeding of California Sea Lions, August for Fur Seals to start breeding, and tortoises in Santa Cruz island to lay eggs in the wild. Nutrient-rich waters from the strong Humboldt current in August offer excellent opportunities to snorkel with sea lion pups. Dolphin and whale spotting is very common in September & November on the crossing to Fernandina Island, and December marks the start of the warm season in the Galapagos and offers many wildlife encounters. Many wildlife species breed and nest year-round, such as the red-footed and masked boobies, flightless cormorants, penguins, and greater flamingoes.

With the Galapagos Islands being hugely popular, planning for your Galapagos trip is recommended, as spaces can fill up fast.

How to get to the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are located in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, 600 miles (1000km) off the coast of Ecuador in South America. International flights will usually arrive at Quito or Guayaquil international airports on the Ecuadorian mainland. Direct flights from US cities are available, as well as from some European cities. A domestic flight from Quito or Guayaquil is required to get to the Galapagos Islands. These flights are usually not included in the advertised tour cost but can be arranged when booking with Liveaboard.com. It is strongly advised that you make your domestic travel arrangements when booking your Galapagos cruise to ensure you arrive on time for the cruise departure.

Where do Galapagos Cruises depart from?

Most Galapagos cruises depart from Baltra Island, San Cristobal Island, where two domestic airports are located, or Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz). Your cruise operator will then arrange to collect you from the airport and take you to your ship.

Very few boats sail directly from Ecuador, as most of the action and adventure lie within the Galapagos Islands themselves. So, you will get more out of your trip if you start it in the heart of the action.

Galapagos Cruise Tips

When planning your Galapagos trip, there are a few things to consider. When should you book? How many days? What to take? etc. Below are some tips to help you to get the most out of your trip of a lifetime;

Plan ahead - To avoid disappointment, planning your Galapagos Small Ship cruise well ahead of time is best. Most Galapagos yachts sell out at least 6 months in advance, so try to book early. That being said, sometimes there are good deals due to cancellations. So, if you are planning a spur-of-the-moment Galapagos cruise, checking for some last-minute deals is a good idea. This is one way to see Galapagos on a budget, but you risk the chance of the cruises being sold out.

Arrive early - trying to arrive at least 1 to 2 days before your cruise departure date is recommended in case of flight delays. The last thing you want is to miss a few days of your long-awaited Galapagos cruise and have to join the tour later.

Choosing the right trip - As mentioned earlier, yachts are restricted from returning to the same visitor site within 14 days. For that reason, you will see many different itineraries, ranging from East, West, North, South, A, and B. Most boats have put a lot of effort into scheduling the itineraries, so no matter which one you pick, you will have a memorable experience. Galapagos itineraries can be as short as 4 days, but most are 8 days long. However, the best way to see the Galapagos and all it has to offer is to do 2 back-to-back, 7-night itineraries; his way, you will cover most of the islands and visitor sites. Various boat sizes are available for cruising the Galapagos Islands. See our Best Small Ship Cruises in Galapagos page for more information.

Cruises versus Island Hopping - While you can still explore some of the visitor sites and islands of the Galapagos by staying in a hotel and moving from island to island, only a few areas in the Galapagos National Park are accessible by day boat. Taking a liveaboard is the only real way to explore the 40 National Park landing sites, with the added benefit of arriving early before anyone else arrives.

What to pack - While on your Galapagos expedition, there are a few things you want to take with you to get the most enjoyment out of your Galapagos cruise. A good, comfortable pair of hiking or walking shoes is essential for the trails you will explore. The second set of waterproof type sandals is also ideal for beach walks and wet landings from the panga. Regarding clothing, you don’t need to worry about bringing too much. It’s recommended to bring a light raincoat or poncho, sunglasses, a hat, a lightweight sweater for cooler evenings, mosquito repellant, and some long, lightweight clothing for sun protection. Also, a good SPF is essential because the Galapagos Islands are close to the equator. For the evenings, the dress code varies from boat to boat, but at the most will be smart-casual.

Snorkeling Gear - most Galapagos yachts will provide a full set of snorkel gear, but it is recommended that if you have your own and it is comfortable, take it with you. Particularly if you have your mask or need a prescription mask, wetsuits are generally not included in the cost of the trip, and it can be a good idea to arrange to rent one of these to keep you warm in the water and to protect you from the sun.

Galapagos Travel Advice - You will need a valid passport to visit the Galapagos, with at least 6 months still available. Most countries do not require a visa to enter Ecuador, but checking with your local embassy before making travel arrangements is a good idea. The local currency is the US dollar, but most yachts accept major credit cards. If taking cash, try to bring smaller notes, as many restaurants and stores do not accept $100 bills. You should also bring US$ cash to tip the guides and crew aboard your Galapagos cruise.

Wish I could spend more time!

Cruising Galapagos in March on the Nemo III

We would highly recommend the Legend. We are prone to seasickness, so we took a large boat. I don't think we missed out on anything compared to the smaller boats except the ship had to anchor a little further out than the smaller boats and tender us in to shore. We also spent 5 days on land based activities in the Galapagos after the cruise. You will see much more wildlife cruising and visiting the uninhabited islands than you will visiting the human-populated islands.

Great experience.. good combination with walking, hiking, beach, snorkelling, visiting with Zodiacs and swimming :-) Our guide Enrique was great! We even could use the kayak and the SUP. After each excursion we were welcomed back with a special drink and snacks...

Snorkeling was good lots of fish decent visibility

Cruising Galapagos in February on the Natural Paradise

Overall, cruising in Galapagos is truly an amazing experience. We have traveled and sailed in other parts of the world, but nothing can compare to experiencing wildlife as you are able to do on Galapagos Islands while learning from professional and experienced Naturalists, there to answer any question you may have about what you see or hear. Each Island has it's own unique experience to offer from geology, history, flora, fauna and sea life - fantastic!!

Cruising Galapagos in February on the Nemo II

Didn't dive on this trip, but snorkeling certainly met our expectations. Conditions on the last few days of the trip weren't too good due to low visibility, but the first several sessions were wonderful. Wish I had seen more sharks and hammerheads especially.

Cruising Galapagos in February on the Grand Majestic

Didn’t dive but the snorkeling was fabulous.

Cruising Galapagos in March on the EcoGalaxy

Excellent - lots of sitings of the 2 dozen or so must see animals. Even had over 100 galapagos sharks circling the boat one night chasing flying fish.

Cruising Galapagos in April on the Natural Paradise

The winds reduced visibility a bit, but I would do it all again in a heartbeat!

Cruising Galapagos in May on the Archipel I

We did not dive. Snorkeling was such a fun adventure that allowed us to see many marine animals in the wild!

Cruising Galapagos in June on the Infinity

We only snorkeled but that was the highlight of the trip for us. Outstanding adventure!

Cruising Galapagos in June on the Galaxy

Not being a diver or snorkeler it was a wonderful introduction to the activity.

Cruising Galapagos in September on the Fragata

I highly recommend visiting the Galápagos Islands, once in a lifetime experience ! And I think the best way the visit is on a cruise ship! You get to see so much !

Cruising Galapagos in September on the Calipso

Loved it - everyday we saw new wildlife. It was incredible how unafraid the wildlife was of humans which allowed for relatively close & extended contact with the wildlife. Travel between the islands was very enjoyable on the Nemo III which is a sailing catamaran. The boat had tons of open space on deck for watching the landscape go by and for spotting marine animals i.e. dolphins & whales. Great trip - would highly recommend

Snorkeling was as amazing as the excursions on land!

Cruising Galapagos in May on the Nemo II

The snorkeling was superb overall, though there were days when the water conditions were not ideal.

Cruising Galapagos in May on the Galaxy

We covered alot of area, and were kept nicely busy learning something every day, The trip certainly exceeded our expectations.

Cruising Galapagos in June on the Nemo II

  • J. Miller T

no diving but the snorkels rivalled most of the dives I've been on lately....

We did not dive, but enjoyed our snorkelling experiences. The wet suits kept us warm and they were very buoyant. We saw so much marine life, tropical fish, sea stars, sea lions frolicking, marine iguanas feasting, sea turtles in abundance, sharks, stingrays, penguins….a sea lion catching a parrot fish, amazing!

Cruising Galapagos in June on the Passion

We did not dive. We were on a snorkel boat. The snorkeling was unbelievable! And I always felt safe because the guide was always in the water with us, and the two dingys were close by with two crew members available to pick you up with the wave of a hand.

Cruising Galapagos in July on the Galapagos Sea Star

Snorkeling was fantastic.

Cruising Galapagos in July on the Golondrina

We have seen so many different islands, fantastic beaches, volcanic landscapes. It was impressive.

Cruising Galapagos in August on the Golondrina

Every island we visited and every activity we participated in helped to make our 6 day cruise in Galapagos one of the best trips our family has ever taken. Galapagos is one of the most amazing places on earth and our cruise with Alya was a fantastic way to experience it.

Cruising Galapagos in August on the Alya

  • 5.2 Review score

Not enough variety of wildlife

Cruising Galapagos in September on the Alya

Did not dive, only snorkeling once or twice a day with great experiences. Separately, for some reason you didn't ask about Santa Cruz island, but I can say the time seeing giant tortoises at El Chata ranch was very special and I think s highlight of anyone's trip to the Galapagos.

Cruising Galapagos in September on the Reina Silvia Voyager

interesting and fun

Was not so fun! Did it once and can’t tolerate the cold water that it affects my breathing. Maybe I’ll come back during warm weather, water might be a little warm!

Cruising Galapagos in September on the Galaxy

We snorkeled rather than diving, and the experience was a bit mixed. We had some days with rough water and poor visibility, but other days that were perfect. We saw sea lions, turtles, penguins, and marine iguanas in addition to the usual cast of fish.

WE did Snorkling and I felt safe and adventurous. Saw amazing fish and shore life.

Cruising Galapagos in September on the Natural Paradise

They were well organized with full wet suits, masks etc. We were given free reign with a good overview for safety. For me, the water was still to cold and tended to be murky and too few fish.Others took full advantage of the many opportunities and enjoyed finding the sharks, rays, etc. .

Snorkeling was great on all days! The best was the snorkel at Devils Crown where a huge pod of dolphins played around the catamaran and also escorted us during our snorkel event! We also saw some whales!!! GREAT EXPERIENCE!

Cruising Galapagos in October on the Alya

We didn't dive on Grand Majestic - but the snorkeling and land excursions were perfect!

Cruising Galapagos in October on the Grand Majestic

The snorkeling was excellent but some spots had more of a « deep sea » feel, which was frightening and exciting at the same time. The crew makes us feel very secure at all times so you really enjoy your experience. Plenty of wildlife to see underwater : penguins, sea lions, rays, sharks, turtles and all the colorfull fish!

I came for the animals as well as the history. Our guide was great with the animal information but he missed on a few of the historical places (mentioned above). After iguanas on every island, you tend to ignore them after a while. Snorkeling was good but again, it was almost the same species at each snorkel site. Too much of any animal, fish, etc. can get old. We stopped on Isabella Island multiple times to the exclusion of other islands. Not sure if we missed anything on the other islands or not, just making a note. Overall, I really enjoyed the entire experience and will highly recommend it others. Thank you! (I am hoping I got my info right on these stops as they are not in the order we did them so my notes may be off a bit.)

Cruising Galapagos in October on the Golondrina

It was great snorkeling. Water is cold after about 30 min.

Cruising Galapagos in November on the Solaris

Next time I would take a nicer boat but like I said staff was wonderful.

We snorkeled. The water was cold on the west end of the island chain but that’s where we had the best experience and interaction.

Cruising Galapagos in January on the Grand Majestic

Overall, it was a very good experience. We learned a lot about flora and fauna of Galapagos while enjoying all the fun activities

Cruising Galapagos in January on the Galaxy

We toured the southern islands and all excursions were fantastic! We kept thinking the next island couldn't get any better than the last one, then it did.

Cruising Galapagos in January on the Samba

  • Alexander W

When the currents were strong the visibility was bad, but most of the time it was really enjoyable. Only needed a wetsuit half of the time.

  • Mary Ellen S

We did not dive, but snorkeled which was amazing! Many turtles, rays, fish, sharks! Also pods of dolphins, killer whales!

Cruising Galapagos in February on the Passion

A trip of a lifetime, absolutely amazing, weather was great, sea was calm most of the time. Staff and boat both exceeded expectations

Cruising Galapagos in February on the Reina Silvia Voyager

We are world travelers- this trip has been the best we’ve ever taken. Be prepared! It is HOT and the islands treks are long and often rocky. The itinerary pace is extreme. There is very little down time. Everyday you are off the vessel by 8. Often by 6:30. Be prepared - while the ship is a luxury vessel - the activities can be taxing.

Cruising Galapagos in April on the Alya

Warm water, pretty clear, playful penguins, what could be better! ( I was snorkeling not diving)

We loved all aspects of our cruise except one night of unavoidable rocky seas. We enjoyed 8 days (no regrets) but would have been satisfied with 5 days as things began to repeat.

We did snorkel on a lot of different places. On some we were lucky on other less. But all by all seem a lot of different locations with a wide variety

Cruising Galapagos in April on the Golondrina

Overall the excursions were informative & very interesting and fun!

The snorkeling was really good, clear waters, an abundance of sea life, the different locations with there unique qualities and creatures. Don't remember the excursions on each island. But overall it was one of the best adventures of our lives!

Cruising Galapagos in June on the Reina Silvia Voyager

We didn’t dive but the snorkelling was wonderful, felt at times like swimming in an aquarium!

Cruising Galapagos in June on the Bonita

Very educational and interesting

Cruising Galapagos in July on the Passion

I’ve never snorkelled before, but it was all straightforward and very enjoyable

Cruising Galapagos in August on the Solaris

Only went snorkeling. Snorkeling is meh; I've seen much better in Caribbean and Hawaii

Cruising Galapagos in September on the Solaris

Fantastic for all the islands - the different unique environments for each one was so interesting.

Cruising Galapagos in October on the Bonita

  • guillermo H

We saw whales, dolphins, manta ray

Cruising Galapagos in November on the Nemo II

Excellent. So much amazing wildlife and each island was unique. It really didn't matter where we went. It was all incredibly interesting.

Our trip to Galapagos was the trip of a lifetime, spectacular in every way!!!

Cruising Galapagos in December on the Reina Silvia Voyager

Cruising the Galapagos Islands is an experience everyone should get to have. It provided me with a greater respect of the effect people have on the environment and its creatures.

Cruising Galapagos in December on the Yolita

Wonderful! Boat size/amount of passengers was perfect. Appreciated that nat parks are so strict with landings and guide requirements, this is a fragile place that needs all the protection it can get.

Cruising Galapagos in January on the Coral I and II

I would definitely recommend this trip. It went to multiple islands so we saw a variety of wildlife and topography.

Cruising Galapagos in January on the Galapagos Legend

Very good though we saw only limited fish stock and sea lions

The Top 10 Galapagos Small Ship Cruises

galapagos islands small boat tours

The best way to experience the Galapagos Islands is aboard a small-ship cruise.

With the many cruises for the Galapagos, it can be difficult to choose a vessel for your experience. The larger vessels that accommodate 50 to 100 visitors can seem crowded and lack the personal touch of smaller vessels.

A small-ship cruise keeps the experience intimate and provides a more personal tour of this incredible region.

The following tours are our selection of small ship Galapagos Cruises defined as accommodating 20 people or less. These include luxury-class, first-class and adventure-class ships to suit a diversity of preferences.

We’ve compiled our most frequently asked Galapagos cruise questions here to inform and inspire your research into this enchanted archipelago. Read this Galapagos FAQ to find out if your burning question is a common one, or contact one of our specialists anytime to ask an expert directly.

What is the best Galapagos cruise?

Choosing a longer Galapagos cruise is a good way to ensure you’re seeing the most species. If you choose an itinerary fewer than 6 or 8 days, carefully consider what islands and experiences are important to you. Shorter cruises will inevitably miss out on some species. Read more in our comprehensive guide on choosing the best Galapagos cruise itinerary .

How do I best compare Galapagos cruises?

Ship size (from 12 to 100 passengers), amenities aboard and islands/sites visited are some of the best ways to compare Galapagos Islands cruises. Our experts can lead the way to help you make the selection process fun.

What are the best Galapagos boats?

The best Galapagos ships match your interests. We’ve tested the top ships and can help matchmake you with the best choice for you. Galapagos luxury cruise seekers often gravitate toward the Galapagos Origin, Evolove & Theory for their prestigious Relais & Châteaux association, but there are newer up and comers to consider. And families often consider ships like the Legend , Santa Cruz II , Coral yachts or other Galapagos family favorites to be the best. View all Galapagos cruise ships to learn more.

What Galapagos cruises have scuba diving?

Consult our  list of small ship cruises with scuba diving  for details on what to expect if you’re seeking to dive on a cruise to Galapagos.

What is the best month for viewing animals?

If native animals are your focus, consider what stage of life and which species you’d like to witness the most. For example, some species actively breed in August while others are birthing or hatching at that time. Your ideal time of year to take a Galapagos Islands cruise may depend on what interests you the most, from giant tortoises to marine iguanas. While no species are guaranteed to be seen, one of our Adventure Specialists can guide you through which month is right for you. Our Galapagos Islands animals and  Galapagos by Month: When to Go & Why blog  are also great guides, outlining which animals are doing what when.

Is Galapagos cruising too difficult for someone in their 70s?

No! If the Galapagos Islands are on your bucket list, do not let age deter you. Our Adventure Specialists are happy to discuss mobility levels and which ships are most accommodating for specific travelers’ needs.

What cruise lines go to the Galapagos Islands?

We partner with 13 Galapagos cruise lines operating more than 25 ships. Some names you may recognize as global cruise lines ( Lindblad Expeditions ). Others are specific to the Galapagos Islands ( Enchanted Expeditions ). Most ships that sail in the Galapagos remain year-round.

Are triple cabins available on Galapagos Islands cruises?

Yes. Our Adventure Specialists are well versed in the different cabin configurations and can talk you through the options for triple cabins, quadruple cabins and single cabins.

Should I be prepared for motion sickness on a Galapagos Island cruise?

The Galapagos is known for fairly mellow seas and smooth sailing, but it’s always good to be prepared. Check out our  How to Prevent & Treat Seasickness guide . If you are extremely susceptible, you can consider your route choice and months of travel to choose more protected waters and avoid months known for more tradewinds (June through November). Learn more about the best time to visit Galapagos .

Are small children under age 2 allowed on Galapagos cruises?

Yes, but it depends on the ship. Each Galapagos cruise line has its own policies regarding young children, and many have minimum or recommended minimum ages. Our  Galapagos family cruises page offers more insight on recommended ages.

If I don’t snorkel on a Galapagos cruise, will I miss out?

Snorkeling is indeed an integral part of a Galapagos Islands cruise and is offered most days, along with Zodiac rides. If you are not able to snorkel, consider a ship that carries a glass-bottom boat. These specialized watercraft are a great way to see and learn about the underwater wildlife as guides are able to explain what is being seen under the boat (penguins swimming!). Ships with this added activity option will offer the best cruise to the Galapagos for anyone not able to get in the water.

What is the terrain like in the Galapagos Islands?

Terrain varies between sandy beaches, lava rocks and established paths that may be flat or hilly. Naturalist guides are very good at pacing excursions, so guests of all levels can enjoy the wildlife and have plenty of photographic opportunities. Dry landings are on solid surfaces, and wet landings require guests to step from a dinghy into water. But you may always opt out of an excursion or landing, perhaps taking a Zodiac ride with easy coastal wildlife viewing instead.

What should I not miss while on a Galapagos Islands cruise?

What Travelers Say About Their Galapagos Islands Cruise

Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating!

The entire trip was excellent; a lot of different activity options everyday - hiking, snorkeling, swimming, lectures, zodiac rides - something for everyone. Lindblad was one of the most expensive trips we could choose from to see the Galapagos and it was worth EVERY penny.

The arrangements were perfect. Not a glitch in the entire nearly two weeks. I am just very happy to have found AdventureSmith.

National Geographic is the gold standard for expedition travel. The Galápagos Islands are a destination of a lifetime! Do not skip any excursions! Soak up every moment.

Our accommodations on board the Legend were very comfortable, the food was delicious, and the staff delightful.

Coral I was perfect for us. We enjoyed the sense of adventure and physical activities without excessive fuss. We felt exceptionally well taken care of.

I brought my 11-year-old son on this trip because he had a rough year with his parents splitting up, and he has always had an obsession with penguins. Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating! My son has never learned to swim due to a severe fear of putting his face in the water, but he was so enamored of the islands that he was able to overcome his fear and learn to snorkel. Genovesa Island was a miracle of wildlife. Sea kayaking along the cliffs was wonderful, as we could see all the animals and the cliffs themselves were beautiful. Snorkeling with penguins, sea turtles, and sharks was amazing.

Accommodations Review

La Pinta was the perfect size and very comfortable. We chose La Pinta because of the size of the ship (not too big or too small), the itinerary (north islands), planned activities for kids, and the availability of a glass-bottom boat. Not a big fan of Quito, but that was a necessary stop. The recommended hotel in the old town area was wonderful.

Meals Review

Lots of options, all of them excellent. Staff worked very hard to accommodate my picky son's whims and were extremely respectful of my choice to be vegetarian.

Crew & Guides Review

The naturalists aboard La Pinta could not have been more professional or knowledgeable. We appreciated Paul sitting with us at lunch and getting to know us personally, and Dennis's enthusiasm about Charles Darwin was contagious. We enjoyed having several guides with different perspectives, but they were all phenomenal.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Nick M. was friendly, attentive, communicative, and very helpful. I handled much of it myself (transportation), but the portion handled by AdventureSmith all ran very smoothly, which was much appreciated.

Traveler Advice

Don't put it off - everyone tells me it's on their bucket list. My son wanted to see penguins, and I was not willing to travel to Antarctica so the Galapagos was the next best option.

  • La Pinta Galapagos Cruises

There was not one thing that could have been done better on this trip. Chris at AdventureSmith spent A LOT of time with me picking just the right ship for the Galapagos trip, and the Islander completely exceeded my expectations. The entire trip was excellent; a lot of different activity options everyday - hiking, snorkeling, swimming, lectures, zodiac rides - something for everyone. Lindblad was one of the most expensive trips we could choose from to see the Galapagos and it was worth EVERY penny. The quality of the naturalists and staff could not have been better, and I think the quality of this trip comes down to the quality of those leaders. Also, the Islander was the perfect combination of comfort and casual.

Islander was an elegant ship extremely clean, comfortable, and perfectly decked out for all the expeditions we went one. Plenty of wet suits and equipment to borrow.

FABULOUS. Wide variety of food selection which was all delicious.

The trip leader (Lynn) and the naturalists were the BEST part of the trip. They knew so much about the region; we would not have had this great an experience with any other leaders.

Great communication from Chris at various intervals before the trip; all documents and info came in timely fashion, and leading up to the trip he called to make sure we didn't have any problems, questions etc. Great customer service. Chris was awesome about getting me comfortable with the choice of vessel and explaining in detail all aspects of the trip. Great outfit.

Go for longer trip (8 days or more) rather than a shorter trip, because each island really is different from each other. Splurge to go on Lindblad.

All the arrangements were effected without a hitch. Drivers and guides met us at the airports and hotels. They were never late - in fact, they often came early. The expedition on La Pinta was just right for us - the itinerary, boat size, and amenities were perfect. Lastly, the trip to Cuenca was interesting and we very much enjoyed the architecture, restaurants, scenery, and the nearby gem of a national park.

The trip was all about the Galapagos Islands, and they did not disappoint. Seeing how treating animals with respect results in a very peaceful coexistence was eye-opening. I came away with some amazing pictures and experiences, including swimming with playful sea lions and stepping around iguanas and tortoises. That said, Cuenca was wonderful. We may very likely go back there after I retire to spend the winter months at least one year. What a beautiful city!

Quito is a big city and not particularly attractive. Our tour guide was good, but that did not change the fact that it was not somewhere we would want to spend a lot of time. We were told not to go out at night (though one restaurant had a free car service and it was worth the trip), versus in Cuenca where we went to a great restaurant about fifteen minutes from our hotel and walked back along the city streets after dark with no concern. There are some areas to avoid, but generally it seems to be a very safe city that also boasts clean tap water (though a several day acclimation period is recommended).

The hotels in Quito and Cuenca were very nice - particularly the one in Cuenca, which like many hotels there is a converted home of some wealthy resident. The accommodations on La Pinta were roomier than I had expected, with a large bed, big window and a bathroom with excellent water pressure and plentiful hot water. The boat, with 41 tourists on board, was just the right size.

The meals we had on our own on the mainland were good, particularly the breakfasts in Quito. On the boat, we enjoyed the meals very much, though breakfast and lunch buffets were clearly the highlight and the sit-down dinners were less impressive. We also had salmon our first night on the boat that could have been fresher. However, the lunches more than made up for the minor glitches.

All of our guides/naturalists on La Pinta were good. They were very knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. In Quito, we had a good guide, notwithstanding she had a limited palette of locations to work with. Our guide in Cuenca was excellent too. All guides and naturalists were very proficient in English, though when we were off the boat, we tried speaking Spanish as often as we could.

The arrangements were perfect. Not a glitch in the entire nearly two weeks. I was so pleased that drivers and guides were always there when they were supposed to be there and made us feel like we were in good hands.

Andrew was great. That's why I'm planning a trip to Peru through him. Information was provided in a very clear and relatively concise manner. We kept the trip instructions close at hand, particularly when on the mainland. The only thing I did on my own without instructions to prepare for the trip was to visit the Mayo Clinic's travel clinic, where they made sure certain vaccinations were up to date and prescribed Diamox for altitude sickness in case I had an issue, as well as something for stomach upset (which was really not an issue).

I am just very happy to have found AdventureSmith. The agency and agent, Andrew, were recommended by friends of ours who were on the same boat as we were some years ago. I am looking forward to working with Andrew and AdventureSmith again when my younger daughter and I travel to Machu Picchu. I have already mentioned AdventureSmith to several people.

Just that they should do their homework to get the most out of the trip, bring the proper clothes (we traveled very light but were just fine), and check in with a doctor to make sure you don't spend days dealing with altitude sickness or have some other issue (after visiting the doctor, we bought DEET mosquito repellent which was not necessary all that often, but we are glad we did). I took Diamox and my wife (who did not take any meds) had just one day on arrival in Quito when she had a splitting headache, but then we both hiked for a couple hours at nearly 13,000 feet and we were both fine. I will definitely make sure my daughter and I have Diamox before we land in Cusco.

Wow! National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions is the gold standard for expedition travel. I was impressed with every single aspect of my experience. I travel a lot! I have always found that people who travel similarly are personable and like-minded. My fellow travelers on this trip were no exception. I strongly believe that I have forged lifelong friendships from many of the travelers with whom I shared this amazing travel experience.

The National Geographic Endeavor II had wonderful accommodations! My cabin was roomy, comfortable, and the wonderful crew member, Olga, who took care of the cabin always did an amazing job.

The food was incredible! It was like visiting a 5-star quality restaurant at every meal! The food was not only delicious, but the presentation and plating were creative and beautiful. The wait staff was also top notch! They took the time to get to know us and even anticipated our "usual" needs.

The naturalist guides were fun, informative, knowledgeable, and they really took the time to get to know us, the travelers. The certified photo instructor was fun, informative, knowledgeable, and he really took the time to get to know us, the travelers. All of the naturalist guides were consummate professionals! And our expedition leader, Paula, was equally amazing. She was fun, informative, knowledgeable, and her daily presentations provided the perfect balance of important information, brevity and humor.

Transportation Review

I had already arranged my own flights to get to and from the destination. National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions arranged the in-country flights. Leslie made sure I was aware of all of the transportation arrangements, putting my mind at ease.

Leslie C. was great! She provided me with all of the important information I needed. She was also very timely in getting back to me with my myriad of questions. It was great to have a dedicated Adventure Specialist, Leslie, to whom I could turn with questions.

I had another trip planned for the summer of 2021, but it was canceled/postponed due to COVID-19. In the "travel bucket list" in my mind, the Galápagos Islands were my next destination, and they were open for travel this summer. I did a little quick research, and decided that I wanted to travel with National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions, and I found that AdventureSmith Explorations could book the trip for me.

The Galápagos Islands are a destination of a lifetime! Do not skip any excursions! Soak up every moment. You can rest when you get home, but you will probably regret missing any opportunity to explore the islands.

Our accommodations on board the Legend were very comfortable, the food was delicious, and the staff delightful.

Dessert twice a day, and all of it delicious. There was a really nice variety of foods available. It seemed that at every meal there was something to suit most dietary requirements. I enjoyed tasting the different fruit juices available at breakfast.

Cesar, the main guide for our group, was fantastic. Dora was very enthusiastic. All of the guides were helpful.

I was very careful to pack little that was not on the packing list provided. There were a few things I wish that I had taken in addition to the clothing on the list. I would have taken something slightly more dressy than hiking clothes as many of the women on our cruise had nicer blouses and sundresses.

Make sure you check in advance to see what kind of weather to expect. When we visited at the end of March and the beginning of April it was quite warm, but I understand other times of year can definitely be cooler.

We think it would be helpful to manage the expectations of guests about what animals will be seen. The reading material suggested possibilities that weren't necessarily possible because of the season of year, or the mating habits of the wildlife. It would be helpful to come with a more realistic understanding of those circumstances. Fortunately, Andrew made the suggestion that we allow an extra day to travel to Quito because of the possibility of cancellation of flights. The Atlanta airport blackout made that advice a reality and we were grateful to have that cushion. The various groups--Metropolitan Touring and Klein tours could not have given us more of a sense of being well cared for. Connections were smooth and clear.

Coral I was perfect for us. The room was spacious. The beds were comfortable and we loved the wake up calls by Diego!! Size of gathering rooms was perfect.

The variety of fresh fruit was most welcome, as well as the plentiful offerings of fish. The desserts were varied and tasty. I particularly appreciated having my birthday celebrated with a special, delicious cake! We're from Seattle and we thought the coffee was superb! The staff was exceedingly friendly and attentive to needs.

Ernan: was very knowledgeable; however, his approachability was variable--at times aloof and at other times, very forthcoming. Norman: consistently shared his knowledge of the islands and of the flora and fauna. Lola: enthusiastic in announcements; our exposure to her was limited.

We enjoyed the sense of adventure and physical activities without excessive fuss. We felt exceptionally well taken care of.

We would encourage people to peruse the Michael Jackson Galapagos book to familiarize themselves with the variety and the complexity of what they will have the privilege to see.

6 Best Galapagos Cruises For Every Kind of Traveler

By Meena Thiruvengadam

Galapagos cruises are the best way to experience the collection of remote, mostly uninhabited islands about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. But cruises in the Galapagos Islands aren’t like cruises anyplace else. The ships here are smaller, with some carrying as few as 16 passengers. There are no water slides, elaborate Broadway shows, casinos, or wild nightclubs. And don’t expect big bus tours in port either.

Galapagos cruises are about experiencing nature and wildlife while limiting environmental impact as much as possible. Ships are built for sustainability and toting items like kayaks, paddleboards, and scuba gear. Itineraries may feature two active excursions a day, limiting downtime on board the ship. Instead of museums and historic sights, you’ll visit uninhabited islands to encounter marine iguanas, sea lions, unspoiled beaches, and the adventures of a lifetime.

Trips to the Galapagos Islands are logistically complicated, making cruises an especially good way to experience the area. Travelers to the Galapagos Islands must first fly to Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador, for a night before flying to the Galapagos to board their ships. All travelers must also be accompanied by National Parks Guides who can help them navigate these largely undeveloped islands.

Galapagos cruise itineraries are typically a week long and cover a portion of the islands, sometimes more. Here's everything to know about cruising in the Galapagos, from frequently asked questions to the best itineraries to book now.

  • Best luxury Galapagos cruise
  • Best Galapagos cruise for stargazing
  • Best Galapagos cruise for adventure seekers
  • Best Galapagos cruises for solo travelers
  • Best small ship Galapagos cruise

Best Galapagos cruises for families

When is the best time to cruise the galapagos islands .

With pleasant temperatures all year long, the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands is whenever you’re ready to go. Several cruise lines sail to the Galapagos Islands all year long. While you can see wildlife all year, December is hatching season for the giant tortoises, and July is mating season for blue-footed boobies and short-eared owls. Sea turtles lay their eggs early in the year and fully formed marine iguanas typically hatch in April and May.

Are Galapagos cruises expensive?

The Galapagos Islands aren’t a bargain destination. Expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $12,000 per traveler depending on the ship, itinerary, and length of the voyage.

One thing’s for sure: Whatever your preference, there’s a Galapagos Islands cruise for you. These are six of the best Galapagos cruises for every type of traveler.

All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Silver Origin cruising the Galapagos Islands.

A suite on board Silver Origin comes with butler service.

Best luxury Galapagos cruise

There’s no more luxurious way to sail the Galapagos Islands than on  Silversea's Silver Origin , a ship custom-built for cruising these islands. Silver Origin is Silversea’s first destination-specific ship and includes several features meant to minimize its environmental impact. The all-suite ship can carry up to 100 passengers, is all-inclusive down to the premium spirits in your stateroom's minibar, and includes the luxury cruise line’s signature butler service. There’s also a salon and fitness center on board, a rarity for ships sailing in this region. Most itineraries on the Silver Origin are seven nights, but longer cruises are typically scheduled around winter holidays. The Silver Origin sails the north, central, and western loops of the Galapagos Islands.

Best Galapagos cruise for stargazing

This region may be better known for its landscapes and wildlife, but the Galapagos Islands are also an excellent place for stargazing. And there’s no better Galapagos cruise ship for stargazing than the  Celebrity Flora . The 100-passenger vessel feels more like a luxury yacht than an expedition ship. It has a stargazing platform on its top deck and provides binoculars to help guests spot constellations as the ship cruises along the equator. The modern expedition ship also offers a glamping experience that includes a naturalist-guided stargazing session and a luxurious night of glamping under the stars. Prefer to sleep in your bed on board? Have dinner under the stars at the ship’s restaurant before heading back to your suite. The Celebrity Flora ’s Galapagos itineraries range from seven to 16 nights.

Best Galapagos cruise for adventure seekers

Lindblad Expeditions has been cruising the Galapagos Islands for more than 50 years. It now sails to the Galapagos year-round in partnership with National Geographic, giving guests the chance to encounter giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas, and more. A staff of expert guides is on board to help travelers spot wildlife and better understand the volcanic landscapes, mangrove thickets, and seagrasses they encounter. Activities include unforgettable snorkeling adventures, hikes through pristine wilderness, and walks along remote beaches. Lindblad’s newest Galapagos Islands cruise ship, the National Geographic Islander II , feels more like a boutique hotel than an expedition ship and carries just 48 passengers in 26 suites. Some itineraries offer advanced divers the chance to commune with a variety of marine life. And while rugged adventures may await travelers off the ship, each suite offers travelers plenty of comfort: They come equipped with flat-screen TVs, in-room espresso machines, and bathrooms with double sinks.

Best Galapagos cruises for solo travelers

Galapagos cruises aren’t cheap, especially if you’re sailing solo. Hurtigruten makes cruising the Galapagos Islands more affordable by waiving the single supplement on several of its Galapagos cruises. Hurtigruten Galapagos cruises range from seven to 14 days in length and take place on the MS Santa Cruz II , a ship that comes equipped with panga boats, kayaks, snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and a glass-bottom boat for viewing marine life. The ship carries a maximum of 90 passengers, and its operations are carbon-neutral. There’s a small gym and a hot tub on board. Regular prices start around $8,500 for a one-week cruise. Look for sales to bring your price down even further.

Best small ship Galapagos cruise

Avalon Waterways may be better known for its European river cruises , but it also sails the Galapagos Islands. Avalon sails this region on two ships, the Treasure of the Galapagos and the Delfin III . The Delfin III , which also sails the Amazon in Peru, is its newest and most luxurious Galapagos cruise ship. The ship has just 22 suites, almost guaranteeing you’ll make new friends along the journey. The Treasure of the Galapagos is even smaller, carrying a maximum of 16 guests. And while there’s no long list of restaurants on board either ship, there are creative, locally inspired menus featuring seasonal ingredients and lots of vegetarian options. On board both ships, you’ll find daily natural history lectures, a team of multilingual naturalists, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, and plunge pools.

For an adventure your kids will never forget, hop on board an Adventures by Disney cruise of the Galapagos Islands. Just be sure to wait until your kids are at least seven years old. This is the minimum age for most Galapagos cruises, though Disney recommends this itinerary for children eight and older. This isn’t your typical Disney cruise. It’s a small ship expedition itinerary with a hint of Disney magic in a setting fit for a fairy tale. Adventures by Disney's Galapagos itineraries span nine days and visit about 15 sites.

Galapagos Small Ship Cruises

Dive deep into the galapagos experience, the distinct advantages of a small galapagos cruise.

The main appeal of a small Galápagos cruise is the close and personal wildlife encounters it offers. With a typical capacity of 12 to 16 passengers, these ships ensure that each island visit is less crowded and more immersive. Unlike larger vessels that split passengers into multiple groups for excursions, small ship cruises streamline the process, allowing more time on the islands. The presence of a dedicated naturalist guide ensures a deeper understanding of the Galápagos, fostering enriching discussions that can continue throughout the journey. If you're looking for an immersive Galápagos experience, our expert advisers can guide you to the perfect small ship cruise.

Oceanic Society

Conservation Impact

Founded in 1969, Oceanic Society is America’s oldest 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ocean conservation. As pioneers of “eco travel,” our expeditions have been designed to directly support our mission . They not only positively impact our travelers, but also the people, places, and wildlife we go to see. Your expedition costs include fees that support conservation and promote sustainable livelihoods in the communities we visit, and Oceanic Society's earnings are invested back into our global research and conservation programs . In 2019, we also established our Expedition Impact Fund (EIF) as a way to grow our impact. The fund is seeded annually with money earned from our expeditions, and supplemented by donations from Oceanic Society travelers. Through the EIF, we award grants to our partners for their on-the-ground efforts to protect ocean habitats and the wildlife and human communities that depend on them.

DESTINATIONS

Best Galapagos cruises for an epic wildlife adventure of a lifetime

Fran Golden

About 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador , in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are a remarkable place to visit for wildlife sightings. You can see flightless Galapagos penguins, Galapagos sea lions, giant Galapagos tortoises, marine iguanas and hundreds of other species found nowhere else on earth.

The islands are also one of the places in the world that are best explored by cruise ships.

To get close to Mother Nature in the mostly unpopulated islands, you need to get on the water — and land on islands in the company of a licensed Ecuadorian naturalist guide. Galapagos National Park tightly controls who comes in and where ships can explore.

All the ships are Ecuadorian flagged, Ecuadorian crewed and owned by Ecuadorian companies, sometimes in partnership with leading cruise companies. Excursions, often twice a day, are included in cruise fares. The sailings are year-round, and routes are always subject to change based on park control.

Related: 9 things I wish I had known before taking a Galapagos cruise

The cruise companies use various descriptors of where they go, but basically: If your ship heads north and west, you'll see more volcanic landscapes; if you go south or central you'll explore more beaches and bays. Wildlife sightings on both routes are thrilling, both above and under the sea — where you may find yourself snorkeling with sharks and sea lions.

Birdwatchers may want to do a full 14-night trip to touch every corner and add many species to their Life List. For the rest of us, a week or less can provide enough brag-worthy wildlife encounters to last a lifetime.

Choosing a ship will depend on how long you want to explore, how much you want to pay and what level of luxury you expect. It's not uncommon for travelers to combine a Galapagos cruise with land exploration in Quito, Ecuador; the Ecuadorian Amazon; or Machu Picchu in Peru. Most cruise lines offer add-on land-based itineraries.

Here are our picks for the best Galapagos cruises.

Short cruises on La Pinta

galapagos islands small boat tours

This intimate, 48-passenger yacht is operated by Metropolitan Touring and offers popular four-night and six-night itineraries. These are a good option if you are short on time.

Cabins are spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can take in the views even when getting ready for the day or relaxing in bed. Four cabins can be connected for families or friends traveling together (some sleep three). The entire ship sports a comfortably upscale ambiance, and a favorite hangout is the sun deck with its hot tub and bar.

An expedition leader along with onboard naturalists will guide you through your trip. The ship is equipped with kayaks for guest use, and a glass-bottom boat provides views for those who aren't into snorkeling.

Cost: Four-night cruises start from $5,525 per person; six-night cruises from $7,001 per person. Small-ship expedition specialist UnCruise Adventures also charters La Pinta. Seven-night packages combining one night in Guayaquil with a six-night cruise start from $9,595, available on select dates from March through November.

Hurtigruten expedition experience on Santa Cruz II

Also operated by Metropolitan Touring, the 90-passenger Santa Cruz II is an expedition ship with contemporary decor and comfortable single, double and triple cabins.

When you aren't in your cabin you might catch views from the ship's two hot tubs. Activity equipment includes snorkeling gear (with wet suits available to rent), a glass-bottom boat and kayaks, plus a top-deck fitness room.

The ship, which is operated on a carbon-neutral basis, is under charter to the well-regarded expedition company Hurtigruten for select dates each month in 2023.

Cost: Eight-night packages combining a six-night cruise with two hotel nights in Quito are available from $7,999 per person. Other options include four-night cruises from $4,551 per person and six-night itineraries from $5,735 per person.

Yachting with Quasar Expeditions' Grace

galapagos islands small boat tours

Quasar Expeditions has the most historically prestigious ship in the Galapagos market. The 16-passenger Grace is a classic yacht from the 1920s that carried Princess Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco on their honeymoon in 1956 (in the Mediterranean).

Reflective of the golden age of travel, it's all about luxury on board — polished woodwork, gourmet meals and service from a crew of 10, plus two naturalist guides.

Cost: Seven-night cruises start from $8,500 per person.

Island exploration with Adventures by Disney on Galapagos Legend

Adventures by Disney offers sailings in the Galapagos on the 100-passenger Galapagos Legend in March, June-August and December.

The minimum age is 7 and the recommended age is 8 and older. The comfortable ship has the rare-in-the-Galapagos feature of a swimming pool, plus a hot tub. When Disney is on board, its trained Adventure Guides lead special Junior Adventurers activities for kids, in addition to the usual snorkeling, kayaking and glass-bottom boat rides. Select sailings invite special guest experts on board to give workshops and presentations in their area of expertise.

Cost: Fares for eight-night trips beginning with two hotel nights in Quito followed by a six-night cruise start at $7,399 (adults) and $6,699 (children). Other companies, such as Go Galapagos, offer three-night cruises on Galapagos Legend starting from $1,842 per person.

Relais & Chateaux experience on Origin and Theory

galapagos islands small boat tours

Ecoventura's 20-passenger all-suite yachts, Origin and Theory, are both recognized by the prestigious Relais & Chateaux gourmet restaurant and luxury hospitality association, and intimate and luxurious exploration is their calling card.

The crew of 13 includes a French-trained chef, a concierge and two naturalists.

Pampering ensues — even for young guests who are on board select family departures during which added activities include a cultural exchange with local students. Check out the rare Galapagos publications in the library when you're not in the outdoor Jacuzzi, on the kayaks or on paddleboards.

Cost: Seven-night cruises are available from $9,450. Or, charter the entire yacht for yourself for $189,000.

Superyacht sailing with Aqua Expeditions

Aqua Expeditions is well known in luxury circles for its superyachts in the Peruvian Amazon and Asia. The company recently launched the 16-passenger, all-suite, all-inclusive Aqua Mare in the Galapagos.

The interior decor is by Italian superyacht designer François Zuretti, and the Peruvian Japanese-fusion cuisine is by chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, famed for his "jungle cuisine."

Among the spacious suites, the top Owner's Suite is 861 square feet. The Jacuzzi is big enough for six guests. The yacht is also stocked with kayaks and paddleboards for guests to use.

Cost: Seven-night cruises start from $9,450 per person. Charter the entire yacht starting at $196,000.

Galapagos with Avalon Waterways

galapagos islands small boat tours

River cruise line Avalon Waterways is known for sailings in Europe and on the Mekong. However, it's also in the Galapagos, chartering the 16-passenger small ship Treasure of Galapagos for seven-night sailings from February through November 2023.

All cabins on the ship — including the 430-square-foot master suite — have balconies and are done up in welcoming, contemporary decor. The ship's design is outdoor-focused, with alfresco dining and a bar near the Jacuzzi.

Indoors is a small lounge and dining area. Wine and beer are included with meals.

Cost: Seven-night cruises (beginning with two nights in Quito) start from $5,251 per person. Other Galapagos operators sell four-night itineraries for the ship starting from $3,695 per person.

Expedition sailing with Lindblad's National Geographic Endeavour II

Top expedition company Lindblad Expeditions has been sailing in the Galapagos for more than 50 years, evident by the seasoned team of naturalists and the experiences they deliver, including exploring the sea thanks to innovative underwater equipment.

This 96-passenger ship is a spacious base camp. Passengers can explore with Zodiacs, kayaks, glass-bottom boats and stand-up paddleboards.

Select expeditions feature guest National Geographic biologists, authors and photographers, who can help you get the perfect wildlife photos. The cruises are popular with families, and a diving program is available for advanced divers.

Cost: Fares for a 10-night cruise (including two nights in Guayaquil) start from $7,710 per person. Lindblad also has a 52-passenger all-suite luxury yacht in the market, the National Geographic Islander II, with as many crew members as guests. Fares for its seven-night cruises start from $9,390 per person.

Ultraluxury experience on Silver Origin

galapagos islands small boat tours

Ultraluxury line Silversea Cruises delivers everything on a silver platter on the 100-passenger Silver Origin.

Request Champagne from your butler while you lounge in the hot tub. Guests will likely also appreciate the high-tech walls that feature touch-controlled HD screens allowing you to zoom in on exclusive wildlife videos shot by drone in Galapagos National Park.

There is also the luxury of space to spread out, indoors and out, amid gorgeous contemporary furnishings. Everyone stays in a large butler-serviced suite.

In addition, the cuisine is extraordinary — the Ecuadorian executive chef even takes time to explain the local ingredients he uses. The staff includes one naturalist guide for every 10 guests.

Cost: Fares for seven-night cruises start from $12,250 per person.

All-suite megayacht cruising on Celebrity Flora

With a design similar to Silver Origin, Celebrity Cruises' Flora delivers a first-class experience.

Suites include either a step-out balcony or an "infinite veranda" created when you push a button to open the top half of a wall of glass.

Menus are crafted by a chef who helmed Michelin-starred restaurants. Personal suite attendants cater to your needs while experienced naturalists lead star-gazing sessions.

Perhaps the coolest experience on board is glamping on the top deck, overnighting under the stars in a cabana equipped with a double bed.

Cost: Fares for seven-night cruises start from $7,918. Celebrity Cruises also offers sailings on the 48-passenger Celebrity Xpedition, a small luxury ship. Seven-night cruises start at $5,119 per person. Additionally, seven-night sailings aboard the even more intimate, 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration start from $5,550 per person.

The Best Galápagos Island Cruises

A cruise is one of the best ways to see all that this remote Ecuadorian archipelago has to offer.

galapagos islands small boat tours

There's no better way to cover ground on your trip to the Galápagos Islands than to sail on a multiday cruise.

Galápagos National Park regulates the number and type of tourist boats that are allowed to operate in the famously biodiverse area. This helps with overcrowding, conserving the environment, and minimizing stress on the amazing wildlife of the Galápagos. Many tourist boats in the area offer five- to seven-day all-inclusive itineraries that are strictly monitored by the national park officials. There are also cruises operating illegally, so you have to take care when choosing a tour.

To help you find a cruise fit for your wildest dreams, we've rounded up 14 of the best options, whether you prefer a small ship or bigger vessel, an action-packed itinerary or a casual drift around this remote archipelago in the Pacific.

Small Galápagos Cruises

Most of the cruise ships in the Galápagos Islands carry fewer than 20 passengers. These vessels, typically motor yachts, can't provide some of the luxurious amenities available on larger ships, but they do ensure personalized service, a more intimate experience, and quicker trips on and off the boat.

Quasar Grace

The 18-passenger Grace was once owned by Grace Kelly. She and Prince Rainier spent part of their honeymoon on the motor yacht, and now you can sleep in their bedroom, the Grace Kelly Suite, which is one of nine rooms aboard. The ship sails three routes, taking eight to 15 days, and guests get plenty of snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and panga rides along the way.

Ecoventura Letty

The Letty is one of the best full-service motor yachts in the Galápagos for value. This 20-passenger boat is a solid option with great service and comfortable accommodations. A trip on the Letty promises a 10 guest-per-guide ratio, as well as dinner with the captain. You get a choice between two seven-day itineraries, each including opportunities to snorkel, hike, and learn about the local wildlife from knowledgeable guides.

Ecoventura Origin

The 20-passenger Origin is like a floating boutique hotel. All 10 cabins are on the same deck, there’s an open-bar policy, and Wi-Fi is available on board. A unique hull design means this ship is also one of the most fuel-efficient in the Galápagos. Like the Letty , Ecoventura's Origin sails two routes around the archipelago, each lasting eight days and providing plenty of chances to get up close to nature.

Medium Galápagos Ships

If you're stuck between whether to book your cruise on a small ship or a large vessel — both have their advantages — one of these medium-sized boats accommodating 20 to 50 passengers could be the best of both worlds. You'll enjoy more space, a larger group to mingle with, and sometimes a wider variety of activities and services to accommodate more people.

Quasar Evolution

The 32-passenger Evolution was designed by Adriana Hoyos, a furniture and interior designer renowned for her work on luxury hotels across the Americas. Its cabins have a contemporary boutique-hotel aesthetic. There are indoor and outdoor lounges, a bar, and a library. Passengers can choose between three itineraries, ranging from eight to 15 days and taking different routes around the Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Islander II

All cabins on the 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II have windows, and some even have private patios. The ship offers deck hammocks, Wi-Fi, and food made with ingredients sourced from farms in the Galápagos whenever possible. Itineraries range from seven to 12 days and include cultural experiences in addition to wildlife viewing and water sports.

Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. The downside of traveling on a large ship is the time it can take to complete transfers by zodiac from the boat to the islands. Also, some areas of the Galápagos may be off limits to larger ships.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Endeavour II

The 96-passenger National Geographic Endeavour II has Wi-Fi, a doctor, SUP gear, a clear-bottom zodiac, a free digital photo kiosk with iMacs, and a spa. Like the Islander II, food brought from the mainland is carefully prepared and packaged to prevent the introduction of invasive species to the Galápagos Islands.

Celebrity Flora

The 100-passenger Celebrity Flora features all of the design elements, amenities, and services of its sibling ships and then some. It has two 1,288-square-foot penthouse suites (the largest in the Galápagos), naturalist-guided stargazing sessions, and outdoor cabanas that you can reserve for a unique glamping experience.

Silversea Silver Origin

The 100-passenger Silver Origin is an all-suite ship with accommodations up to 1,722 square feet, some with in-room espresso machines and mini-bars, private verandas, and butler service. Tips are included in the price. The ship also has a fitness center, a spa, a communal fire pit, and two restaurants. There are more than 100 cruise options, some lasting as long as 18 days.

Galápagos Catamarans

These small boats have a unique hull design, like the dual parallel runners of a sled, that many believe makes catamarans more stable in the water.

Celebrity Xploration

The 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration is arguably the most luxurious catamaran in the Galápagos. Its eight suites and junior suites feature extras like binoculars, personal refrigerators, a pillow menu, and room service. The catamaran cruises two routes, a northern route and a southern route, both lasting seven nights.

Anahi Yacht Catamaran

The Anahi has eight rooms accommodating up to 16 passengers, including two spacious suites. Travelers can expect traditional yacht design details, like polished wooden floors and portrait windows. There are multiple itineraries to choose from, each stopping off at different islands and exploring different parts of the Galápagos. The cruises range in duration from four to 15 days.

Royal Galapagos Cormorant II

The Cormorant II can carry 16 passengers in nine cabins, all with private balconies. Some of the suites even come with walk-in closets and their own Jacuzzi tubs. Travelers can opt for a four- to eight-day cruise with inclusive excursions such as snorkeling, kayaking, and glass-bottom boat tours.

Live-aboard Dive Boats

If you’re a certified scuba diver, a live-aboard dive boat might be for you. These boats are built to accommodate the specific needs (and gear) of divers, and they navigate special routes and itineraries that include top dive sites. The Galápagos is home to whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, spotted eagle rays, manta rays, sunfish, and many other marine creatures.

Explorer Ventures Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer

Explorer Ventures ' two live-aboard vessels, the Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer , accommodate 16 passengers each. The Humboldt has a large dive deck, which makes it easier to get into and out of your dive gear. The eight-day excursion includes up to 19 dives and the 11-day excursion includes up to 28.

Galápagos Nortada

The 84-foot Nortada has only four cabins and can sleep eight guests. Passengers can congregate on the bridge, the galley, or in the dining room and lounge. Dive trips last either seven or 14 nights, and itineraries include up to four dives a day.

Galápagos Aggressor III

The Aggressor ships have been cruising around the Galápagos Islands since 1993. The Galápagos Aggressor III accommodates 16 passengers. Charters last a week and include four dives a day plus two land excursions.

Embark on your own adventure as you wander from isla to isla, soak in crystal-clear waters, traverse volcanic landscapes, and spot animals you've only ever seen pictures of . To be honest, there's simply no place on Earth quite like the Galapagos.

Best time to visit.

Simply put, there’s no bad time to visit the Galapagos Islands. Good weather is mostly found year round, as are the animals. This being said, November through to June is the preferred time to visit, with clearer skies, calmer seas and decreased winds. Of these, March and April have less rain, while November and December are the warmest. July to November is the best time for divers as whale sharks can often be spotted at Wolf and Darwin islands.

Culture and customs

Ever since Charles Darwin brought attention to the giant tortoises, sea lions, hammerhead sharks and other spectacular wildlife of the Galapagos Islands, people have been fascinated by this archipelago of volcanic islands. Originally a pirate hideout, people started migrating to the islands from Ecuador after it became part of the country in 1832. Of the 13 major islands and scores of smaller islands and islets that make up the Galapagos, only five of them are inhabited – about 26,000 residents spread over the islands of Isabela, Santa Cruz, Floreana, Baltra and San Cristobal. The wildlife rules the rest of the islands, which are carefully managed to help protect the precious environment.

Geography and environment

Located in the Pacific Ocean about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago of 13 major islands, six smaller islands and more than 100 islets. Some are sparsely vegetated with largely mountainous interiors, whereas others are comparatively lush with white-sand beaches. Many of the islands are in a state of flux, as continual volcanic eruptions cause them to erode and expand.

The largest island, Isabela, makes up half the land area of the Galapagos and is characterized by three active volcanos, a blue lagoon, clear lakes filled with flamingos and beaches where iguanas and sea lions roam. Santa Cruz is the second largest island with giant tortoises, marine iguanas and Galapagos crabs residing in Tortuga Bay. The oldest and most remote island, Espanola (also called Hood), boasts boobies, albatrosses and many species of birds and lizards not found anywhere else in the world.

Top wildlife to spot

1. Sea Lions

Whether you're loafing about on the beach or snorkeling offshore, you’ll be hard-pressed not to come face-to-face with these frolicsome critters at some stage. Playful, plentiful, and pretty much fearless, you’re supposed to keep a 2-meter distance from these guys at all times - though their insatiable curiosity can make this hard.

2. Marine Iguanas

The only lizards in the world that can live and forage in the ocean, the marine iguana is found solely in the Galapagos. Fierce and ferocious though these Godzilla-like reptiles may appear (Darwin called them ‘Imps of Darkness’), it’s all bluff – they only feed on algae. And with lung capacities permitting up to half an hour of underwater foraging, you’re just as likely find them gorging on the islands’ surrounding seabeds as scampering about the craggy rocks they inhabit.

3. Hammerhead Sharks

Boasting one of the animal kingdom’s most puzzling physiologies, hammerhead sharks are found in abundance off Wolf, Bartolome, Santa Cruz and Darwin islands. Unlike most sharks, they will often merge into schools of over 100 during the day - making for some incredible and surreal photo opportunities. And with no known human fatalities and a wealth of choice natural prey on offer, diving amongst them isn’t as scary or dangerous as one might think.

Darwin finches gave rise to one of the most game-changing theories of all time. By studying the differences between finches from different islands, Darwin hypothesized that the birds’ adaptations to their habitats resulted in their mutation into different species: his Theory of Evolution.

5. Giant Tortoises

No trip to the islands is complete without a visit to its most famous residents. Weighing up to 882 pounds, regularly living for more than 100 years, and able to go for up to 1 year without food, these gentle and slow-moving monsters are an intriguing and humbling spectacle to observe.

6. Sea Turtles

Snorkeling alongside these majestic creatures of the deep (or more accurately, the shallows) is one of those rare, life-affirming moments that makes a trip to the Galapagos immediately worthwhile. Keep your eyes peeled on the beaches for turtle nests too - the Galapagos is a hotbed of activity for these critters.

7. Blue-Footed Boobies

Despite essentially looking like handsome seagulls with painted toenails, blue-footed boobies, when caught hunting, serve up one of the Galapagos' most thrilling spectacles. Diving from heights of up to 100ft, groups of boobies hit the water at speeds up around 60km per hour. They usually let out a shrill whistle before letting rip, which means you'll usually have warning enough to get your camera out too. How considerate.

8. Flightless Cormorants

Granted, a flightless cormorant spotted on land isn't one of the most invigorating sights you'll see during your time here. But wait until you don your snorkel gear and spot one weaving elegantly through the water - the flightless cormorant will likely become one of your favorite discoveries in the Galapagos Islands for this reason alone.

9. Frigatebird

With its striking wingspan and deeply-forked tail, the magnificent frigate bird is easily one of the most impressive birds in the skies of the Galapagos archipelago. But they don't have such a swell reputation amongst other birds. Whilst they hunt fish on the oceans surface, they also force their winged brethren to regurgitate their food, which then they eat - a process known as kleptoparasitism. Still, they look gorgeous – particularly the males, with their bright-red chin sac.

Galápagos Multisport

This tour is intended for people who are physically fit, able to walk 6 kilometers a day, love to kayak/snorkel/swim/bike, and still have plenty of energy to enjoy the wildlife. I cannot cope up with the group, but luckily our CEO offered me options like museum visit, tour to Tntoreras. I still was able yo see all the wildlife I need to see exvept the cormorant. I did not expect to stay in a 5 star hotel. I find the accommodation suitable enough for my needs: comfortable bed, air condition, water, electricity, wifi. Special thanks to Sandra, CEO. She is one of the best tour guides I met in my years of travel. She is a great listener and teacher. She was born in Santa Cruz. She knows Galapagos like the palm of her hand.

Maritza was an absolutely fantastic guide. Do yourself a favour and ask for her! The tour is a good mix of activities and your own time on the islands. The boat trip between the two islands wasn’t great but if you can get through the 2 hour experience then it’s a much cheaper tour than the cruise options.

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS DISCOVERY TOUR 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS

When we arrived in the Galapagos, Johnny, the owner of Natura Gardens welcomed us with a sign. He showed us how to get a bus ticket, rode with us in the boat taxi and then transported us in his vehicle to the hotel. Upon our arrival at the Natura Gardens, Johnny, his family and staff were so welcoming, accommodating and generous. My husband and I were celebrating our Honeymoon. Johnny created the word "LOVE" with rose petals on our bed and made us a romantic candlelit dinner with fresh flowers. We were astonished and overjoyed with his thoughtfulness to make our stay so special. You can feel Johnny's love for his community and excitement for the excursions we participated in. He always asked about our experiences and our thoughts. Johnny knows a lot about the Galapagos and told us a lot about the area. He did a wonderful job giving us our itinerary and what to expect for each activity. The food was excellent and always served in a timely manner. We absolutely recommend the Natura Gardens for your next stay! The staff are so friendly and welcoming, their generosity is unmatched.

This tour was a great tour to save the logistics hustles. It is great for people who have little time before the trip to plan because it certainly covers all the highlights in the Galapagos. I didn’t expect it is not a group tour but I guess that’s part of my fault. Nevertheless i enjoyed the Galapagos and looking forward to going back.

7 Day Galapagos Island Hopping Budget Tour

7 Day Galapagos Island Hopping Budget

We had a lot of fun in the Galapagos on the Rebecca Adventure tour. This was different from tour groups in the past since one just follows the itinerary purchased and not necessarily in a big group. For example, the first three days of our 7 day tour overlapped with the 9 day tour, then on day 4 we traveled to a different island while the 9 dayers had one more day on Isabela. It felt like our private tour with others joining us for each excursion. The coordinators for each island were each top notch and met with us each evening to let us know what to expect the next day. Day guides and transportation were always on time. A no worry, no hassle vacation.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Galapagos Islands

This was a great tour, the galápagos is amazing! G-adventure has a well organized tour. There are some early morning days but they don't matter because you are in the Galápagos! The rooms are basic but have air conditioning which is good since it is very hot there. José was a fantastic guide and had so much knowledge about the islands. Definitely choose the add-on snorkeling trips they are worth it. I think the Galápagos needs to be on everyone's list.

DAY 1- Arrival & Bartolome Island

Arrival & Bartolome Island

Today marks the beginning of your journey to the Galapagos Islands. Please note that due to regulations set by the Galapagos Government, a fee of 20 USD must be paid for the migration control card.

Upon arrival in Santa Cruz, passengers are required to pass through an airport inspection point to ensure compliance with regulations prohibiting the introduction of foreign plants or animals to the archipelago. Additionally, at this inspection point, passengers must pay the entrance fee to the Galapagos National Park. As of August 2024, foreign passengers pay $200, while children under 12 years old pay $100.

Later, your guide will meet you and assist with carrying your luggage to the bus. Passengers will then arrive at the Catamaran Seaman Journey via a motorized boat called a panga.

Later today, you'll explore Bartolome Island, located across Sullivan Bay. With an altitude of 114 meters, Bartolome offers stunning panoramic views of the Galapagos Islands' landscape, including volcanic cones, lunar-like craters, lava fields, and the iconic Toba-formed pinnacle eroded by the sea. Vegetation on the island is sparse.

Bartolome Island boasts two picturesque beaches inhabited by marine turtles and a small colony of Galapagos penguins at the base of the pinnacle.

DAY 2- Mosquera Islet & North Seymour Island

Mosquera Islet & North Seymour Island

This morning, you'll head to Mosquera Islet, located between North Seymour and Baltra. Despite being one of the smallest islands in the Galápagos, Mosquera Islet's volcanic origin and geological uplift offer a unique landscape with a flat terrain and no visible crater.

Mosquera is known for its stunning color contrast, featuring white sand beaches, turquoise waters, vibrant green vegetation, and jet-black lava rocks. It's a paradise for landscape photography, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.

In the afternoon, your destination is North Seymour. Unlike volcanic islands, North Seymour is a raised island with a flat terrain dominated by rocky formations. It's home to a large population of magnificent frigatebirds with ample nesting sites. Blue-footed boobies showcase their courtship dances in open areas, while swallow-tailed gulls perch on the cliff edges.

Despite the strong surf along the outer shore, you can spot sea lions enjoying the waves and body-surfing on the beach.

DAY 3- Genovesa Island: El Barranco & Darwin Bay

Genovesa Island: El Barranco & Darwin Bay

Today's excursion takes you to Genovesa Island, specifically to El Barranco, also known as The Cliff. Situated in the southern part of Darwin Bay, El Barranco offers a trail on volcanic rock spanning 1.5 km, allowing for a leisurely two-hour exploration. This area represents the youngest geological region of the island.

The cliff itself, composed of delicate lava formations, has been shaped by natural erosion, creating ideal nesting grounds for Storm Petrels. Here, you'll encounter two petrel species nesting in the lava's crevices and holes. Keep an eye out for the short-eared owl, a primary predator in this ecosystem. The red-footed booby, unique to the outer islands like Genovesa, can also be spotted here, alongside the masked booby. During panga rides along the cliffs, you may glimpse fur sea lions and various seabird species.

In the afternoon, your journey continues to Darwin Bay, formed by the collapsed crater of Genovesa Island below sea level. Upon a wet landing on its pristine white coral sandy beach, birdwatchers will delight in sightings of red-footed boobies, masked boobies, wandering tattlers, lava gulls, and more. As you traverse the trail, ascending gradually to the cliff's edge, you'll witness red-footed boobies nesting in the Mangrove trees below. Keep your eyes peeled for sharp-beaked finches, Galapagos doves, and swallow-tailed gulls. At the trail's end, a breathtaking vista awaits, offering panoramic views of the island and its vibrant avian inhabitants.

DAY 4- South Plazas Island & Santa Fe Island

South Plazas Island & Santa Fe Island

Today's journey leads you to Plazas, situated east of Santa Cruz Island and comprising two islets known as Islas Plazas. Despite its modest size, Plazas boasts some of the Galapagos' most fascinating and unique species. Notably, the land iguanas found here are smaller than their counterparts on other islands.

Throughout Plazas, you'll encounter hybrid iguanas, a remarkable result of crossbreeding between male marine iguanas and female land iguanas. These hybrids sport a distinctive black/gray coloration, featuring a land iguana's crest alongside the face and tail of a marine iguana. The island's abundant iguana population owes much to the availability of tunas, their preferred sustenance. Along the rugged cliffs, swallow-tailed gulls nest alongside other seabirds such as Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds, and brown pelicans.

Later in the day, you'll venture to Santa Fe, located in the southeastern reaches of the Galapagos. Unlike most islands, Santa Fe emerged from an uplift rather than volcanic activity, resulting in its predominantly flat terrain. Some theories even propose Santa Fe as the archipelago's oldest island. Home to an array of endemic species including the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, rice rats, and one of the two land iguana species in the region.

Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by the clear, inviting waters and the bustling sea lion colonies. As you traverse the trail, keep an eye out for salt bushes and towering giant prickly pear cacti, a hallmark of island gigantism. Snorkeling opportunities abound, offering encounters with playful sea lions and colorful tropical fish in the surrounding marine environment.

DAY 5- Land Tortoise Breeding Centre & Departure

Land Tortoise Breeding Centre & Departure

On this final day of your journey, you'll visit the David Rodriguez Land Tortoise Breeding Centre. Established in 2002 by the Galapagos National Park Service, this program focuses on the breeding and conservation of tortoises in captivity. Initially named the Jacinto Gordillo Tortoise Breeding Centre, it was later renamed in 2016 to honor David Rodriguez for his remarkable 39 years of service as a park ranger.

Located in the southeastern region of San Cristobal, approximately 22.5 km from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the David Rodriguez Tortoise Breeding Centre is accessible by land. A scenic 40-minute bus ride near Cerro Colorado brings you to this facility, meticulously designed to simulate the natural habitat conditions of the giant tortoises (Chelonoides chathamensis) native to San Cristóbal Island. Its mission is not only to bolster the population of these iconic creatures but also to contribute to the sustainable tourism development of San Cristóbal.

Following your visit, you'll be escorted to the San Cristobal airport, ensuring you arrive in time for your return flight to the mainland.

Does anybody know what's going on with this company ESAV airlines ? Do they still exist?

Could you advise me what to do in this case? Do I have any legal tools to influence on them to get my money back?

P.S. Tickets were bought via WeTravel platform (booking and payment platform). The platform can't refund me because the payment is older that 180 days. I have a confirmation of payment, receipt, tickets, all emails and cancelation letter from ESAV .

Day 1 (L/D)

Transfer from Manta to Guayaquil Airport by road -- a four-hour drive.

Your luggage is inspected by the Galápagos National Authorities to avoid the introduction of any harmful seeds, plant or organisms to the islands. Board a one-hour flight to the Galápagos Islands .

Upon arrival in the islands, you'll meet your naturalist guide on Baltra and transfer by public bus to shores of the Itabaca Channel.

A short ferry ride brings you to Santa Cruz Island . On Santa Cruz, board a private vehicle to transfer to Puerto Ayora on the other side of the island. As you pass through rural areas, you will learn a bit about the agriculture of the archipelago as well as the diversity of its flora and fauna. Surrounded by wild landscapes and different species, keep a lookout for the finches that are famous for being the basis of Darwin's theory of evolution.

Lunch is served at local restaurant in the Highlands.

This afternoon, watch the famous Galápagos land tortoises in their natural environment and learn how the private ranches here assist in the protection of these special animals. Listen to the tortoises as they eat leaves from the trees and crash through the undergrowth -- they are beautiful but perhaps not graceful. Tortoises of all ages and sizes gather here. The small, young ones have bright, shining carapaces; the older ones move more slowly and sport some serious cracks in their shells -- evidence of a long life. Your guide will share in detail the story of the origin of the well-known lava tunnels in this area. Continue to the Galápagos Habitat Hotel (or similar) for check-in.

Day 2 & 3 (B/L/D)

Today you will take a full-day boat tour to ONE of the following nearby islands:

An early start brings you to Itabaca Channel, where you step aboard a yacht for a day in paradise -- beautiful white beaches, clear water, and a wealth of wildlife to observe. Enjoy breakfast while watching the sunrise at sea during the two-hour boat trip. There is also a chance of spotting dolphins and other marine residents very close to the boat in the early hours. There will be either a dry or wet landing on Isla Bartolomé, where you'll discover a fascinating moonscape formed by different volcanic parasitic cones -- lava bombs, spatter and cinder cones. Due to its geographical location, Isla Bartolomé's lack of vegetation is immediately noticeable. Hike the 300 steps to the summit for impressive views of the surrounding islands -- Santiago, North Seymour, Baltra, Santa Cruz and Rábida -- and the eroded tuff cone Pinnacle Rock. The rock is home to thousands of sea birds, and is the most photographed landscape in the Galapagos Islands. Change clothes and head to the beach. The dinghy-ride provides an amazing encounter with the diminutive Galápagos penguin. Step ashore for a short walk through the dunes to the northern beach and a pelican nesting area. In the bay, small white-tip reef sharks swim and are easily observed from the shore. Back at the southern beach, the shallow sea invites you to go swimming and snorkeling with the Galapagos penguins, sharks, starfish, rays, sea turtles and plenty of other exotic and colorful fish. Enjoy the diversity of native residents such as marine iguanas, sea lions, pelicans, and many more. Lunch is served back on the boat. Your day trip ends with a late afternoon return to the Ikala Hotel.

Seymour & Bachas

Get acquainted with North Seymour Island and Bachas beach. Head to Itabaca Channel, where you step aboard a yacht for the one-hour cruise to Seymour Island. Transfer by dinghy to the rocky coast near a small Palo Santo forest consisting of gray and silver trees that are leafless most of the year. Seymour is famous for its large colonies of birds. The very special male frigatebirds, with their red pouches, attract females in breeding time, and the famous Galápagos blue-footed boobies can be observed here. These seabirds have a wedge-shaped tail, long pointed wings and, for courtship, the males lift first one, then the other blue foot into the air and dances to impress the female. Other highlights of this excursion are a beach with small cliffs, and a chance to observe seagulls, sea lions, marine iguanas and pelicans. Your freshly-cooked lunch consists of two courses, and is served on the boat. During siesta time, the yacht navigates to Bachas Beach on the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island. Take a short hike to a flamingo pond just behind the beach, and afterwards refresh yourself with a swim or snorkel at this isolated beach with white sand and turquoise water. Sea lions, rays, tortoises, and tropical fish may join you in your underwater experience. Your day trip ends with a late afternoon return to the Ikala Hotel.

Plazas & Punta Carrion

Transfer to Itabaca Channel, where you step aboard a yacht for a day on South Plaza Island. This is one of the smaller islands of the Galápagos. Plazas welcome travelers with a bright, colorful red and green carpet of sesuvio -- an endemic plant -- and the loud, friendly barking of several sea lion families. The turquoise water of the ocean perfectly complements the white sandy beaches and the black lava rocks of the coast. Take an easy hike alongside basking sea lions and land iguanas, which are found on most parts of the island. The trail leads to the highest cliff, where swallow-tailed gulls wheel through the air and blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds glide gently on the wind. Bring along binoculars for close-up views. The view from the highest point, looking out over the ocean and the powerful waves breaking against the cliffs, is an experience you won't forget. Afterwards, the trip continues to Punta Carrion, where lunch is served on board the yacht. This is a great spot to snorkel and swim among rays, sharks, and hundreds of colorful tropical fish. Your day trip ends with a late afternoon return to the Ikala Hotel.

Navigate to the small town of Puerto Velasco Ibarra located on the Floreana Island, about 2½ hours from Santa Cruz. Local transportation known as a 'chiva' for a 30-minute ride up to the highlands. The dirt road is surrounded by typical dry vegetation that transforms into a lush, green vegetation as you gain elevation. Banana, coffee and cacao farms dot the landscape. A beautiful walk permits you to observe the typical flora and encounter some giant Galapagos tortoises. Continue to the place where the German Wittmer family settled in 1932, using cave as their home. Lunch is served at a small restaurant. La Loberia Bay is home to a small colony of sea lions. Marine iguanas rest on the rocks, and turtles populate the clear water.

Head to Puerto Villamil -- the town on Isabela Island -- about three hours from Santa Cruz. You will visit the Isabela Tortoise Breeding Center. Your guide explains the different activities developed by the National Park to protect the fragile environment. Different species and sizes of giant galapagos tortoises live here. Walk to the humedales (wetlands) by way of a well-maintained path. This beautiful spot is composed of lagoons and rocks, mangroves and trees that attract flamingos and migratory birds. Lunch is served at a local restaurant. You'll visit the Las Tintoreras scenic area with colonies of marine iguanas, sea lions, and white-tipped sharks (tintoreras) resting in the channels formed by lava flows. Snorkel in the company of sea lions, penguins and marine turtles.

Formed by uplifting, rather than by a volcano, Santa Fe is known for having one of the most beautiful coves in all the Galápagos. Some of the island's endemic species include the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, land iguanas, various types of finches, and the Galapagos mockingbird. Your visit includes a hike on a trail past salt bushes, where Galapagos hawks and Santa Fe land iguanas tend to roam. Playful sea lions will usually accompany swimmers and snorkelers during beach time.

Whichever island you visit, your day trip ends with a late afternoon return to the hotel on Santa Cruz Island.

Day 4 (B/L)

After breakfast, visit Charles Darwin Research Station and its famous residents within an impressive giant prickly-pear cactus forest. These are the headquarters of scientific investigation, conservation, and the National Park administration in the islands. Gain insight into the huge efforts being made by scientists, guides, rangers, and park managers to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site . The Charles Darwin Research Station is also part of the "Centro de Crianza Fausto Llerena" which is the breeding center for the tortoises. Tortoises are raised here in the care of researchers and then when ready re-introduced into their natural environment.

Next, transfer to the airport to board the flight to Guayaquil.   Upon arrival in Guayaquil airport, an Akorn representative will meet you to transfer to a nearby venue to have lunch.

After lunch enjoy a Panoramic City tour of Guayaquil.   Sightseeing to the Malecón 2000 along the shores of the Guayas River. Pass by the Civic Plaza, the Moorish Tower, City Hall, and the Rotonda Monument among other important city spots.

Then head back to the Airport for your flight connection to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima, a local representative will meet your group and transfer to our overnight hotel. Wyndham Costa del Sol Lima Airport Hotel (or similar).

Day 5 (B/L/D)

Walk from the hotel lobby back to the airport and check in for a flight to Cusco .

Upon arrival to Cusco, we will collect our bags and head straight to the sacred site of Koricancha. Here, we admire the lovely Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo that was built on the foundations of the Temple of the Sun, the most sumptuous temple in the Inca Empire. The curved, mortar-less masonry wall at the west end of the church is considered to be one of the greatest existing examples of Inca stonework. Continue with the splendid Baroque-style Cusco Cathedral, built in the mid-1500's on the foundations of an Inca palace.   Many of the stones used in its construction were looted from the nearby Sacsayhuaman Fortress.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we drive up to Sacsayhuaman itself.   Strategically located on a hill overlooking Cusco, Sacsayhuaman was constructed without mortar, like many other Inca structures.   Yet the enormous stones (some weighing 200 tons) of the remaining walls fit so tightly that not even a thin blade of grass can slide between them. The craftsmanship is a stunning example of the Inca’s sophisticated construction techniques and architectural skills.

Check in at the Palacio del Inka Hotel (or similar). Dinner and overnight.

Day 6 (B/L/D)

After breakfast, we will drive into the “ Sacred Valley of the Incas ”.   After passing through many wonderful landscapes, we arrive to the train station to board our train to Machu Picchu.   From there we will travel 1½-hours on the Vistadome train ride along the Urubamba River to the Aguas Calientes Station. The Urubamba River is located in the Sacred Valley approximately 9,350 feet above sea level. After arriving to Aguas Calientes, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

The climax of our day, is your tour of the awe-inspiring timeless wonder and grandeur of Machu Picchu, the "Lost City of the Incas."   Your guided walking tour explores the terraces and aqueducts leading to the Temple of the Three Windows. See the sun's rays pass through the temple to light the Sacred Plaza and visit the curious stone block believed to be a solar clock. As you explore this Inca retreat perched between Huayna Picchu (Young Peak) and Machu Picchu (Old Peak), you can't help but be moved by the wonder of the place. Carved from the granite of the mountain top, many of the building blocks weigh 50 tons or more yet are so precisely sculpted and fitted that the mortar-less joints will not permit the insertion of even a thin knife blade.

After our tour, we will return to the train station and head back to Cusco. Once back in Cusco we will transfer back to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

What is the right length of time for a yacht safari? One of the biggest mistakes travelers make when visiting the Galapagos is simply not leaving enough time to experience the islands to the fullest. We’ve crafted a just-right 8 day/7 night and 14 day/15 night itinerary options to maximize your time for exploration, breathtaking wildlife encounters, and optimal relaxation.

8 Days / 7 Nights Itineraries Over the course of 30+ years of Galapagos experience, Quasar has crafted two 7 night/ 8 day itineraries of equal quality in terms of site visitations, expedition activities, scenery, and wildlife encounters. Join us for a week of discovery through the lens of Darwin.

15 Days / 14 Nights Itinerary For those time-privileged travelers seeking deeper Galapagos immersion, we offer a 14 day/15 night itinerary. This expedition covers the entire archipelago, ensuring no experience is left a mystery. Guests enjoy a higher chance of encountering the rare species that inspired Darwin’s brilliant works.

In 2012, Galapagos National Park began requiring all cruise organizations to wait two weeks before visiting the same landing site. This regulation was introduced to disperse boats more evenly and lighten the environmental load for the Park’s 80+ visitor sites, and resulted in 2-3 cruise itineraries for every ship in Galapagos.

One of our Galapagos experts will happily offer itinerary guidance and answer questions about the journeys we offer.

How to Get To Galapagos

International Flight Route Durations to Galapagos Islands

Travel to the enchanted islands from any part of the world by air, with a quick hop from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands. From flight coordination to tailoring your itinerary, our Expedition Designers do it all.

Is there a flight directly to Galapagos? There are no direct international flights to Galapagos. To reach the islands, you must first arrive in mainland Ecuador (either Quito or Guayaquil), then take a quick flight directly to your Galapagos cruise port.

How much does a ticket cost from Quito or Guayaquil to Galapagos? The extra roundtrip plane ticket from Ecuador’s mainland cities of Quito or Guayaquil to Galapagos averages US$ 450-500. This tier of tickets allows for changes and includes one checked bag. Domestic air tickets to Galapagos are typically not included with Quasar's Galapagos cruises, however, we are happy to help you arrange this flight in conjunction with your selected yacht safari.

How far in advance should you book your flight to the Galapagos or South America? Unlike other destinations, airlines that fly to Galapagos do not apply the typical dynamic pricing conditions. Therefore, the “golden rule” of booking flights between 40 and 50 days prior to your cruise does not always apply. Because flights to the islands are limited, the peak time to buy your ticket to Galapagos is as soon as your island accommodations are booked (cruise or hotel).

Top 10 Galapagos FAQs Asked by First-Time Travelers

1. what is the best way to see the galapagos islands cruises or hotel.

Over 97% of the Galapagos archipelago is a national park, completely off limits to human establishments. Only 3% of the islands are human-inhabited, where hotels are allowed to be built. Therefore, the only way to access the majority of the visitor sites is on a cruise throughout the entire archipelago.

If you are considering a hotel-based visit, one major problem you’ll face is how to access the Galapagos National Park. There are roughly 70 terrestrial and 70 marine visitor sites throughout the national park where travelers are permitted. Only a handful of these landing sites are accessible from the hotels by day boat, usually at additional cost.

Hotels throughout Galapagos compete for spaces on day boats that take visitors to landing sites. If you are lucky enough to get a seat, landing site rides can then be 2.5 hours each way with a high possibility of getting seasick.

When it’s finally time for your Galapagos trip, the last thing you want is for your experience to be limited and your national park access restricted. While hotel stays are a wonderful way to relax before or after your journey, cruise boats have the edge when it comes to exploring the islands. Think of a yacht safari as an exclusive floating luxury hotel, complete with off-the-beaten-path adventure activities, rare wildlife encounters, personalized itineraries, and access to the authentic, uninhabited side of the islands. Learn more here - What's the best way to see the Galapagos Islands?

2. WHICH CRUISE LINES GO TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS?

Starting in 2010 when restrictions on non-local ships were lifted, larger international cruise lines started to gain interest in Galapagos. Organizations like Celebrity, Silversea, Disney and Hurtigruten now offer cruises in the archipelago. All of these major cruise lines operate 100 passenger ships, which is the largest ship size permitted in the Galapagos National Park and the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

If you have cruised with a major cruise line before, 100 passengers may sound like a very small number. However, in Galapagos, these ships are the equivalent of the 1,000 passenger ships in other popular cruising destinations.

To get the top experience in the Galapagos, we highly recommend choosing Galapagos luxury yachts with 36 passengers or less. With much smaller tour groups, flexible itineraries, and dedicated naturalist guides, yacht safaris allow you to experience Galapagos away from the crowds. Learn more here - Which Cruise Lines go to the Galapagos Islands?

3. WHERE DO GALAPAGOS CRUISES LEAVE FROM?

Galapagos cruises depart from 3 places within the archipelago: Baltra Island, the port town of Puerto Ayora (on Santa Cruz Island), and the port town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (on San Cristobal Island). No Galapagos cruises leave from mainland Ecuador. Your adventure begins with an easy domestic flight from Quito or Guayaquil to the Galapagos.

Guests traveling with Quasar will not need to worry about the logistics of getting to the Galapagos and to your cruise departure port. We will make all the arrangements for you, from the moment you land in mainland Ecuador until the moment you depart from your lifetime adventure. Learn more here - Where do Galapagos Cruises leave from?

4. HOW MUCH DOES A GALAPAGOS CRUISE COST?

We often get asked what the cost of a Galapagos Islands cruise is. The answer depends on the type of accommodations and experiences you are seeking.

Use the general guidelines below to book the premier Galapagos luxury cruise to fit your budget. Keep a lookout—Galapagos cruise offers are available from time to time, especially if you have a flexible travel timeline.

Budget Cruises: In terms of accommodations, these cruises are the equivalent of 1 and 2 star hotels. Budget cruises can cost between $250-$430 dollars per person, per day. A week-long budget Galapagos cruise can cost between $1,800-$3,000 per person.

Tourist Superior Cruises: Cruises in this category are the equivalent of a 3 star hotel and can cost between $450-$600 per person, per day. A week-long tourist superior cruise can cost between $3,100-$4,200 per person.

First Class Cruises: First class cruises are the equivalent of a 4 star hotel and can cost between $610-$780 per person, per day. A week-long first class cruise can cost between $4,300-$5,500 per person.

Luxury Cruises: These cruises are the equivalent of a 5 star hotel in terms of accommodations, service, excursions, cultural immersion, and expert naturalist guides. Luxury cruises in Galapagos can cost between $800-$1,700 per person for the day, depending on the suite category you choose. A week-long Galapagos luxury cruise can cost between $6,000-$12,000 dollars per person and typically deliver the highest overall value to travelers.

Extras: It’s important to factor in additional costs like alcoholic beverages, laundry, souvenirs, and gratuities for Guides and crew. Learn more here - How much does a Galapagos cruise cost?

5. ARE GALAPAGOS CRUISES WORTH IT?

Simply put, absolutely! Galapagos is a one-of-a-kind destination that most travelers, and especially wildlife enthusiasts, have on their bucket lists. There’s no other place on earth where you can safely get up close to wild animals in their natural habitats.

There are over 40 national park landing sites throughout the islands where travelers are permitted to go ashore, enjoy adventure activities, and interact with the rare species that inspired Darwin’s revolutionary research. Over 70% of these landing sites are not accessible when staying in a hotel. A safari-style Galapagos luxury cruise guarantees an immersive adventure that follows in Darwin’s footsteps. Learn more here - Are Galapagos Cruises Worth It?

6. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET FROM ECUADOR TO GALAPAGOS?

To get to the Galapagos Islands you must take a domestic flight from the cities of Guayaquil (airport code GYE), Manta (airport code MEC) or Quito (airport code UIO) in mainland Ecuador. All three cities offer direct flights to the Galapagos, although only Quito and Guayaquil currently offer them daily.

Direct flights from the cities of Guayaquil and Manta to Galapagos take between 1 hour and 45 minutes to up to 2 hours (depending on wind and weather conditions). Direct flights from Quito to Galapagos take about 2 hours and 20 minutes. However, it is worth noting that there are normally only 1 to 2 direct flights to the Islands per day from Quito, while there are about 6 to 8 flights to the Islands with a brief stopover in Guayaquil. Flying to Galapagos via Guayaquil is the most common way to get to the Islands when flying from Quito. These flights take around 3 hours 30 min to 3 hours 50 minutes, depending on the airline you choose and the length of the stop in Guayaquil. Stopovers in Guayaquil are normally not long (40 to 50 minutes) and you are not required to disembark the plane while the airplane refuels and the passengers from Guayaquil board. To learn more - How long does it take to get from Ecuador to Galapagos

7. ARE THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS SAFE FOR TRAVEL?

Galapagos is arguably one of the safest and most magical destinations in the world. Crime is basically nonexistent in the islands, but there are some basic precautions that all Galapagos travelers must take, especially when visiting mainland Ecuador. Everyone who visits Galapagos must spend at least a day in the mainland, at one of Ecuador’s main cities. And just like any large city around the world, there are some basic precautions you must take. Please refer to our detailed article ' Is it Safe to Travel to the Galapagos Islands? ' for necessary precautions for a pleasant stay in both Ecuador and the Galapagos.

Some Galapagos luxury cruise companies, including Quasar’s Evolution yacht, are equipped with an infirmary and a doctor on board for the added safety of its guests. Our crew and Guides are trained in safety protocols. In the event of an emergency, while rare, there are swift, safe medical evacuation options.

8. WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH TO VISIT THE GALAPAGOS?

For anyone interested in visiting the Galapagos, there is really no better or worse month to visit the Islands. In part this is because the Galapagos archipelago is right on the equator; therefore air and water temperatures do not vary much throughout the year. In addition, almost all of the animal species in Galapagos do not migrate, which means you can see them any time of the year. The Waved Albatross is one of the few migratory exceptions and is best seen in spring and summer. For a detailed month by month depiction of Galapagos travel in terms of weather, water temperatures and animal encounters, please visit our page of When to Visit the Galapagos Islands .

However, there is a high season for tourism in Galapagos which tends to be from mid-December to January and from June to August. This coincides with the general holidays and vacation months of the northern hemisphere and doesn’t have anything to do with weather or animal migration patterns in Galapagos. High and Low seasons are solely based on the travel trends of the Galapagos’ main market, North America, which represents about 60% of its international travelers. So, if you want to avoid the crowds in Galapagos, and perhaps even take advantage of a nice discount, travel in ‘the secret season’ which is from September through early December.

9. HOW TO GET TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS?

Unless you already live in Ecuador, making your way to the Galapagos is going to be a multi-leg travel event. You’ll have to take an international flight to get to Ecuador, and then you’ll need to take a domestic flight out to the islands. There are a few important things to remember when trying to get to Galapagos:

- There are no international flights to Galapagos. - The only way to get to the Islands is by air. - Make sure you are flying to the right island in Galapagos. - Don’t book your flights before you have booked your cruise or hotel stay. - Leave some buffer time between your international and domestic flights.

For a detailed step by step guide, be sure to visit our page on How to Get to the Galapagos Islands .

10. WHAT IS THE BEST GALAPAGOS ITINERARY & LOOP?

Galapagos cruise itineraries are often referred to as 'loops' due to the circular routes the ships take around the archipelago. Therefore, whether a company calls their offerings 'itineraries' or 'loops,' they are talking about the same concept.

We are pleased to report that selecting an exceptional Galapagos itinerary is straightforward as long as you are familiar with the destination and the regulations of the Galapagos National Park. Our in-depth article, ' Galapagos Cruise Itineraries & Loops Explained: Which One is Best? ' provides a comprehensive understanding of the distribution of the Galapagos Archipelago, the workings of the Galapagos National Park regulations, and the reasons why cruise companies have various ways of dividing their 15-day cruise routes into shorter 4, 5, and 8-day options.
