LABOUM Hits No. 1 On Realtime Music Chart With 2016 Song "Journey To Atlantis" + Members React

Over five years after its release, LABOUM ’s 2016 track “ Journey to Atlantis ” has soared to the top of Korea’s realtime music charts!

On the May 8 episode of MBC’s variety show “ How Do You Play? ”, Yoo Jae Suk asked his new project group MSG Wannabe to sing LABOUM’s “Journey to Atlantis,” referring to it as “a song that I personally really like.”

Shortly afterwards, “Journey to Atlantis”—which had already started climbing back up domestic music charts earlier this year—began rapidly rising on Korea’s realtime music charts. By 4 p.m. KST on May 9, the song had hit No. 1 on Bugs and was Melon’s No. 1 most popular keyword of the day, and it later reached No. 7 on Genie.

Later that evening, LABOUM’s Solbin took to Instagram Stories to share her excitement about the song’s new achievement. Sharing a screenshot of “Journey to Atlantis” at No. 1 on Bugs and No. 9 on Genie, she wrote, “This isn’t a dream, right?…”

Yujeong also posted a screenshot of “Journey to Atlantis” at No. 1 and wrote, “Wow… even if it ends up just being for a brief moment, I’m really happy… I’m filled with nothing but gratitude…”

LABOUM's 'Journey to Atlantis' Continuously Ranks on Music Charts' Search Trends After Almost Five Years of Release

LABOUM's 2016 song "Journey to Atlantis" has seen constant support among Korean listeners as the track remains one of the most-searched songs on music charts in the country, claiming high positions on the charts' search trends.

LABOUM is a girl group made up of five members, namely Yujeong, ZN, Solbin, Soyeon, and Haein. Initially a six-member band, Yulhee terminated her contract with NH Media in 2017. The female act debuted in August 2014 and has been making a comeback until today.

Recently, their song "Journey to Atlantis" (also known as "Fresh Adventure"), which was released back in April 2016, has been going viral in Korea after a compilation of the group performing the song was uploaded to a certain YouTube channel. This situation is quite similar to what happened to Brave Girls' "Rollin'," which has now eventually achieved great popularity.

LABOUM's "Journey to Atlantis" Remains on High Ranks of Music Charts' Search Trends

On Friday, March 19, NH Media shared that LABOUM's "Journey to Atlantis" has steadily settled on the "BEST 3" search trends of Korean music charts after the song garnered attention on March 17. The song often re-enters music charts around this time of year because of its fresh, spring-like vibes. However, on March 17, it rose higher than usual as it managed to make it to the top 400 on MelOn.

In addition, LABOUM's "Journey to Atlantis," as well as "Shooting Love," re-entered the Bugs Top 100 chart. "Journey to Atlantis," alongside "AALOW AALOW," even ranked on the Bugs real-time chart once again after years.

With the song staying on the "BEST 3" search trends of music charts in Korea, LABOUM's "Journey to Atlantis" may also see a sudden resurgence after almost five years since its release in 2016.

In addition to this, the fan-edited video of LABOUM's performances of "Journey to Atlantis" is about to reach one million views after two weeks since it was uploaded to YouTube on March 6. In the comment section of the video, fans expressed their hopes that this fan-edited video will give LABOUM more attention, just like what Brave Girls has been receiving recently.

LABOUM's Previous Releases

Meanwhile, LABOUM remains active in the entertainment industry. In fact, the girl group released new songs last year. In August 2020, the quintet collaborated with Chinese children's franchise BabyBus for a song titled "Smile Pop Pop." The music video for the track was uploaded to the "SUPER SOUND Bugs" YouTube channel on Sept. 3.

LABOUM also released the digital single "Cheese" on Dec. 24. The song was penned and composed by member Soyeon and is described as a medium-tempo R&B track. This song serves as a special present of the girl group to the fans as it has already been a year at that time that the girls made their last comeback.

Also, in September last year, the group's management agency announced that LABOUM would be making a comeback with a mini-album in October, although LABOUM didn't release one as scheduled.

LABOUM to perform viral hit ‘Journey to Atlantis’ on ‘Show! Music Core’

The 2016 song recently began climbing up Korean music charts

South Korean girl group LABOUM have confirmed that they will be returning to South Korean music TV programmes to perform their sleeper-hit ‘Journey to Atlantis’.

Today (June 4), South Korean news outlet Star News reported that the group will be performing the five-year-old song on MBC’s Show! Music Core on June 5. According to Soompi , LABOUM are set to promote the song again in order to “express their gratitude to both their fans and the public for all the love”.

In South Korea, K-pop artists typically appear on weekly music TV programmes shortly after a release to promote their new projects. These “promotional periods” often last from a few weeks to a month, and artists usually only perform their latest music.

However, LABOUM’s ‘Journey to Atlantis’, recently gained traction after project boyband MSG Wannabe covered the song on comedian Yoo Jae Suk’s variety show, How Do You Play? earlier this year . The subsequently began to climb up music charts, and eventually hit number one on streaming platform Bugs!, as well as the realtime chart on Melon.

LABOUM are not the only group to experience sudden success on music charts with previous releases this year. In February, Brave Entertainment girl group Brave Girls went viral in South Korea with their 2017 song ‘Rollin’’.

‘Rollin’’ was originally released to little fanfare, but surged up South Korean charts after a fan-made compilation video went viral. The group also briefly returned to music shows to perform the track, and are now preparing for a summer comeback .

Netizens don't think LABOUM's 'Journey to Atlantis' deserves the same treatment as 'Rollin'

Netizens are not as excited about  LABOUM 's " Journey to Atlantis " climbing back up on charts as they were about  Brave Girls ' " Rollin' ". 

LABOUM's "Journey to Atlantis" has shot up on charts ever since LABOUM was on ' Hangout With Yoo '. However, it's not getting the same welcome that Brave Girls got when "Rollin'" started shooting up on charts.

The biggest hangup that netizens have about LABOUM is that they have been accused of  sajaegi in the past with ' MISS THIS KISS '. The girls had constantly sold less than 1,000 copies in the first week with their previous releases, but suddenly sold 28,000 copies of 'MISS THIS KISS' in the first week. After, they went back to selling around 1,000 in the first week. 

Not only so LABOUM apparently out-sold  GOT7 without  any fansigns, even though GOT7 is well known for having one of the highest album sales out of idols, combined with the fact that GOT7 had a fansign. It was also pointed out that LABOUM sold more than 35 times their debut album with 'MISS THIS KISS'. This feat is completely unheard of The girls ended up beating  IU on ' Music Bank ' with " Hwi Hwi " because of the high album sales.

Another factor was that when "Rollin'" started sweeping music charts, LABOUM's label continued to try to promote LABOUM along with Brave Girls as what netizens are calling the '1+1' tactic. The two are very similar as they are both frequent performers in military performances, and "Journey to Atlantis" was a well-loved song overseas.

It sucks, but Laboum definitely deserves the success - they are not responsible for their company's tactics

As a long time Laboum fan I have to concur with what is written here because it is common sense to concede something untoward did occur during Hwi Hwi promotions. In addition, having Yulhee leave after the Hwi Hwi comeback was not good for the group's momentum (real or otherwise). Their poor sales post Hwi Hwi demonstrate their momentum was manufactured because you do not suddenly lose so many fans (have a drop in sales) from one comeback to the next in such quick time. I still like the group and am a fan of their music but I can certainly understand why netizens might feel the way they do. Exid and Brave Girls comebacks are rare and I didn't think Laboum would be successful in hitching a ride on the Brave Girls gravy train.
