Located in bucolic southern Pennsylvania , York is a city steeped in history. It was an early capital of the United States, and its downtown area is still filled with centuries-old attractions, like the Colonial Complex and the Provincial Courthouse.

But sightseeing is just the beginning of the things to do in York. You can cheer on York's pro baseball team, the Revolution, at PeoplesBank Park. Spend time outdoors at Rocky Ridge Park or Samuel S. Lewis State Park (a perfect place to visit for a picnic!). See a show at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts. Or go on a self-guided tour of colorful murals in the Royal Square District. Baseball is big in York, and few things draw out the crowds quite like game day at PeoplesBank Park. The 7,500-seat baseball stadium is home to York's professional baseball team, the Revolution (also known as "the Revs"). They face off against others in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball from May to September. Check the website for the most up-to-date game schedule.

The park is also an attraction unto itself. The city of York had been trying to build a baseball stadium for many years before PeoplesBank Park (then called Sovereign Bank Stadium) opened in 2007.

The "Arch Nemesis," the park's left field wall, towers at 37 feet 8 inches high, making it taller than any other professional baseball fence, including Fenway Park's "Green Monster." Tourists can also see a full-color electronic scoreboard, an old-fashioned manually-operated scoreboard, and a statue of legendary third baseman Brooks Robinson at this beloved attraction.

Perched on a hilltop studded with rocks, Rocky Ridge Park contains 750 acres of protected land, most of which is mature oak forest.

York County's first-ever county park was acquired in 1968, but its history can be traced back for centuries as the place where the original settlers of this area built their initial homes. The park now has more than 12 miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders .

You can also enjoy expansive views of the Susquehanna Valley and York Valley from two scenic observation decks , both within an easy walk from the large parking lot.

Warmer months aren't the only time to visit Rocky Ridge Park, though. From the day after Thanksgiving until December 30, the park features a half-mile walking trail with a spectacular multicolored light show for its annual "Christmas Magic: A Festival of Lights" event.

In York's Old Town Historic District, tourists can see buildings that symbolize three centuries of American history, from the colonial era through the modern day.

One of the main attractions in this neighborhood is the Colonial Complex : a collection of three buildings that date back to the mid-18th century. Guided tours are available through the York History Center from April through November.

On the corner of South George Street and East Market Street, you can see the square that once contained the Provincial Courthouse , where the Articles of Confederation were adopted.

Other noteworthy spots in the area include Trinity United Church of Christ , which was founded in 1742; the site of the first printing press west of the Susquehanna River, which printed continental currency; the headquarters of General Anthony Wayne, a Founding Father; the former residence of General Horatio Gates, who served as the President of the Board of War in the 1770s; and the historic York Water Company, the oldest business in York.

These and other historic sites are marked by distinctive navy and yellow signs, so keep your eyes peeled as you stroll the area.

Tourists can see a working dairy farm up close (and with an ice cream in hand!) at Perrydell Farm and Dairy. The farm, which was purchased by Howard Perry in 1923, relies on the milk from just 120 cows to support the three families who run it. Tourists can take self-guided tours around the property, where you can see the milking station and bottling plant, and even pet adorable calves.

After your tour, treat yourself to one of Perrydell Farm's famous ice-cream sundaes. There are nearly a dozen different versions on the menu, which come with your choice of creative ice-cream flavors, like chocolate-covered cherry, lemon cookie, peanut butter swirl, and raspberry cheesecake.

You can also take home an assortment of milk, butter, and locally made sandwiches and treats from the small store on-site (perfect for a picnic at Samuel S. Lewis State Park !).

Perhaps the most artistically inspiring place in York is its Royal Square District, which has been turned into an outdoor art gallery with more than a dozen murals, all within a single-block radius of one another.

This is where you can find the scripted "York" lettering set against colorful geometric shapes that has become a popular place for visitors to take Instagram photos (artist Chelsea Foster, a York native, cleverly arched the middle letters so the entire word can still be seen when people stand in front of it).

Stunning as it is, it's far from the only mural you'll want to snap a photo of. Look out for other fan favorites, like the kissing couple on South Howard Street and the popsicle that resembles SpongeBob Squarepants on the back of the City of York Offices, just to name a few.

Riding on the Heritage Rail Trail is one of the top things to do in York for cyclists. Converted from historic railroad tracks that once linked Washington, D.C. to Lake Ontario, this 21-mile linear park runs from York's Colonial Courthouse to Maryland's Torrey C. Brown Trail.

The trail rewards visitors with opportunities to see a few historic sites, including the Hanover Junction Train Station , which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Not into biking? You can also use the trail for jogging and walking in the warmer months, as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter.

Dig into some of York's tastiest foods and freshest produce at York Central Market House. Located in a historic Romanesque Revival-style building, this thriving market has been in business since 1888.

Come hungry–this food hall's 50-plus vendors offer something for everyone, including cupcakes, coffees, barbecue meat sandwiches, pretzels, waffles, overstuffed hoagies, and Amish pastries. It's also a great place to shop for souvenirs and specialty goods, such as handmade soaps, candles, pottery, aprons, heirloom wooden birds, and decoy fish, and even natural dog treats.

Generations of local history come to life at the York County Historical Society Museum and Library. Visits to this well-curated museum kick off right in its lofty lobby, which still retains the original tile floor of the automobile dealership showroom that existed here in the 1920s. It also displays an impressive David Tannenberg organ from 1804, which contains 622 pipes.

The main exhibits can be found upstairs, where visitors can see a range of artifacts from the early colonial years through the modern day. Antique kitchenware, furniture, children's clothing, and recreated historical rooms give a sense of how everyday York residents lived in previous centuries. There are also displays on Native Americans, as well as a collection of grandfather clocks and handmade quilts.

No place in York offers a better place for a picnic than Samuel S. Lewis State Park. This 85-acre expanse features an idyllic grass lawn atop a slope with gorgeous views of East Prospect Valley and Kreutz Creek Valley.

With 150 acres of land and a large array of recreational facilities, John C. Rudy Park offers locals and tourists a beautiful place to get some exercise and soak in the scenery. You can stretch your legs on a two-mile paved loop trail , enjoy friendly competition on the sand volleyball court or soccer fields , ride on the BMX track , and see a display of plants from master gardeners in Pennsylvania.

If you're traveling with your dog, you can let them run wild at Canine Meadows, an off-leash dog area .

Housed in an old factory, the Agricultural and Industrial Museum focuses on York's contribution to these key areas over 300 years.

This isn't a museum where you'll just read descriptions of artifacts kept behind glass–the attraction completely immerses tourists in this important part of local heritage through hands-on exhibits. You can step inside a trolley car from 1916, try using a rotary phone through a nearly 100-year-old switchboard, and see antique cars and firetrucks up close.

Don't miss the museum's Hall of Giants Gallery, where you can check out a 72-ton ammonia compressor that produced ice in the early 1900s. Look up to see a large crane that was used continuously from 1895 to 1950.

York isn't on the coast, but you can still get out on the water at Lake Redman, part of William H. Kain County Park. The activity area at this pretty lake offers rowboats, kayaks, paddleboats, canoes, and hydro-bikes for rent by the hour.

Anglers are welcome to fish for bass from Lake Redman and the nearby Lake Williams. The 350-foot-long dock at the Iron Stone Hill Parking Lot also makes a great spot for bird-watching.

Fitness products manufacturer York Barbell pays tribute to its founder, Bob Hoffman (considered the "Father of World Weightlifting" ), as well as the history of powerlifting, at the Weightlifting Hall of Fame. The quirky attraction is one of the best free things to do in York and will no doubt give you a new perspective on professional weightlifting and bodybuilding.

The lobby greets visitors with life-size bronze busts of Hoffman and bodybuilder Steve Stanko next to dumbbells and barbells that are more than 100 years old. As you make your way around the circular exhibition hall, you'll see displays on the history of these sports (complete with biographies of famous bodybuilders, like Arnold Schwarzenegger ), trophies and medals awarded to pro weightlifters, a letter from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan commemorating the opening of the hall of fame, and all kinds of exercise equipment.

You can also see decks of cards ripped in half and wrenches bent by these athletes–evidence of their supreme strength and grit.

Urban Revitalization Manager

Bronley joined the York County Economic Alliance and Downtown Inc team in June of 2023 after seven years with the Pennsylvania House of Representatives at the office of State Rep. Carol Hill-Evans of York. During this time, he worked closely with the Representative and House Leadership to bring development funding to Downtown York and York County.  

Born and raised in YoCo and a York City resident for over five years, Bronley is deeply committed to the success and vibrancy of our City and County and builds on his relationships across government, business, and community leaders to implement innovative solutions to continually make York a better place to live, work, and play. Bronley carries out Downtown Inc’s urban revitalization strategy, which includes “clean and green” activities, historic preservation, redevelopment, public art and mural installation and management, wayfinding, bike and pedestrian improvements, and public safety as well as working across the YCEA organization to advance strategic economic development initiatives. 

Bronley is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and recently received his Masters in Public Policy and Administration from York College of Pennsylvania.

Hannah joined our  York County Economic Alliance  and Downtown Inc team after three years at the York County SPCA developing and implementing fundraising campaigns, marketing and communications plans, and community outreach.

Hannah has become known by many through her avid support of our Downtown merchant community, her energy and enthusiasm at business ribbon cuttings and announcements, and her commitment to celebrating the success of our York community. Hannah organizes and leads the First Friday committee, manages the Welcoming Communities Grant Program, and is a lead for the Bloom Grant outreach and communication for the Downtown Inc team.

Born and raised in York County, Hannah is a graduate of  York College of Pennsylvania  and recently completed her Masters in Management and Leadership.

Katie Mahoney joined the York County Economic as Vice President, Marketing & Communications, in 2017, and began leadership of the Downtown Inc team in 2019, shortly after the affiliation.

She has an extensive career in non-profit fundraising, special events, marketing, and development, including previous roles at the Children’s Home of York, YWCA York, and Delone Catholic High School. During her time with the YCEA and Downtown Inc, Katie has launched the #MakeThingsHappen slogan, the I ❤ YoCo campaign, and the Historically Edgy re-brand for Downtown York. Katie is secretary of the Board of Directors for the York County SPCA, and on the board of the York Symphony Orchestra, as well as marketing committees for York Day Nursery and the Farm & Natural Land Trust.

Katie is a Pittsburgh-native turned City of York resident, where she lives with her beloved rescue pitbull, Cora.

Kain County Park , it is considered a “sibling lake” to the smaller Lake Williams. Thanks to a dam built by the York Water Company, Yorkers have yet another place to enjoy the outdoors.

Cruise every inch of the 290-acre water surface in a paddle boat for views of the tree-lined coastline reflected in the water. Cast your line from the rocky beach shore to catch largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish swimming abundantly in these warm waters.

Bring your dog along the pet-friendly Lake Redman Loop Trail. It extends for 8.8 miles around the lake for scenic views from every vantage point.

JUMP ABOARD THE NORTHERN CENTRAL RAILWAY OF YORK

During the golden years of the Midwest industrial revolution, train travel was reserved for the society’s most affluent members. Step into the upper class with a heritage trail ride on the Northern Central Railway . You’ll be in good company since it’s the same route that carried President Abraham Lincoln en route to deliver the Gettysburg Address.

Wander the halls of the antique Northern Central Railway of York station to see museum exhibitions covering the history of the railroad. A vintage train whistle bellows from the platform. It’s time to climb aboard and settle in for a scenic heritage ride full of historical and forest views in replica train cars dating back to the 1800s.

DAY TRIP TO HERSHEY PA

Visiting York is your golden ticket to the land of chocolate because you’ll be just a day trip away from Hershey, PA . Of course, the mere mention of Hershey makes you salivate with thoughts of creamy chocolate treats and tasty kisses. However, there are other local things to do before returning to York at the end of the day.

You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store when browsing the chocolate-filled aisles inside Hershey’s Chocolate World. Give yourself an adrenaline rush on screaming roller coasters towering over Hersheypark. Even treat yourself to a sophisticated evening of music with the Hershey Symphony Orchestra.

Hershey is only 36 miles away from York, so it’s an easy full-day or half-day trip.

How To Explore Downtown York, PA’s Hidden Gems & Must-Visit Spots

Downtown York is hands down one of the coolest little cities in Pennsylvania, if not on the entire East Coast– and we’re not just saying that because we grew up here. With the tagline of “ historically edgy ,” this vibrant destination offers a diverse array of activities and attractions for locals and visitors alike. With a charming Main Street (that’s been voted one of the best in the nation by Reader’s Digest and HGTV), dozens of local restaurants, captivating galleries and boutiques, and a rich cultural scene, Downtown York has something for everyone.

Seth and I grew up in the suburbs surrounding Downtown York and also called the city proper home for a few years, so when we were recently invited back by Downtown Inc ., we jumped at the opportunity to rediscover this trendy city and share how cool our home is with the world (or at least our little corner of the internet). This city is packed to the brim with hidden gems waiting to be uncovered. Read on for our top 10 unmissable experiences in Downtown York, PA.

Getting to & Navigating York, Pennsylvania:

Downtown York is located in South Central Pennsylvania making it just under one hour from Baltimore, Maryland, about 90 minutes from Washington, DC, two hours from Philadelphia, and within a few hours drive from many other major Mid-Atlantic cities. York makes for a great road trip, but if you’d prefer to take public transportation to and from this destination, there is a centrally located Grayline Bus station right downtown.

Downtown York is primarily composed of three walkable neighborhoods: Market District, WeCo District, and Royal Square District. If you’re planning to stay within Downtown York itself, a car is unnecessary as the city is super walkable, but one could come in handy if you plan to do some additional exploring of the area.

Where to Stay in Downtown York:

York offers a variety of accommodations including Airbnbs and the newly renovated, historic Yorktowne Hotel , but if you’re a lover of unique stays like we are, the Grace Manor Bed and Breakfast stands out above all the rest. This property is Black Woman-owned, and centrally located in the WeCo (West of the Codorus) District of Downtown York. And when we say that the owner, Joanne, excels at both the bed and breakfast components of “BnB,” we mean it. Her daily breakfasts are composed of a 3-course Southern-influenced meal each morning, and her themed suites are beautifully designed. We stayed in the French Suite (pictured below) and found it to be the perfect homebase for a weekend in Downtown York.

Celebrate first friday.

Downtown York is truly a year-round destination, but no matter when you visit, we recommend planning your trip over the first weekend of the month. Each First Friday , over 70 restaurants, shops, art galleries, and small businesses keep their doors open late and welcome the community into their spaces with special events. You can expect special deals, interactive activities, live music, and in the warmer months, the city barricades main streets and small local businesses set-up stands on the sidewalks for pedestrians to browse and shop freely.

Thrift Shop

York Emporium: If you’re a book lover, you’ll want to check out York Emporium (pictured below). They have a massive second hand book collection as well as a wide variety of other curiosities for sale. This shop also offers lots of reading nooks that invite you to stay awhile and enjoy your new (to you) finds. They also host folk/blues jam sessions in their bookstacks every Sunday!

My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe : This upscale consignment shop is a must-visit when in the Market District. They always have a great selection, and also offer a really cool “counterfeit prevention destroy and shop program” through which they destroy fake designer pieces in exchange for a $10 store credit. This program is the only one of it’s kind in York, and helps get fake pieces (that are often tied to child labor, drug trafficking, etc.) off the streets locally.

Revolt Style Studio : This boutique promotes sustainability in every aspect of their business model. They carry curated wearable vintage finds as well as some vintage home goods, and periodically host a regional vintage vendor event called 717 Vintage Fest !

Molly’s Follies Located on the corner of King and Duke Streets, this charming boutique offers unique furniture, curated home goods, and hand-painted pieces that are upcycled and remade.

Immerse Yourself in Local Art

Mural Hunt: The area between King, Queen, Princess, and Duke Streets makes up York’s recently revitalized Royal Square neighborhood and can be viewed as an arts district within the city. Resulting from a collaboration between local organizations and artists, over a dozen colorful murals have been painted on the walls of buildings in the area, and they are definitely worth a look. More information about the murals as well as a route for a self-guided tour can be found here .

Gallery Hop: York is home to a thriving art scene, and has over a dozen galleries to be explored. We loved checking out Steph Holmes ‘ nature-inspired gallery and Ophelia’s Making Agency . Both are located in the WeCo District and host open houses regularly. Creative York’s galleries are also definitely worth checking out. They host a variety of classes in their space, including a date night pottery class .

Get Creative

Learn a New Skill Like Soap Making: Sunrise Soap Company is not only the best smelling place in Downtown York, it’s also the perfect place to unleash your creativity. At their Creation Station, you can create your own custom-scented bath and body products. We saw lots of kiddos while we were there, but we found this unique hands-on experience to be perfect for makers of any age.

Take a Painting Class: We took a nature-inspired painting class with local artist Steph Holmes and had the best time. She has a beautiful studio in the WeCo District of Downtown York and hosts both adults only (BYOB) and family friendly classes. This was our first-ever painting class, so we weren’t super confident in our skills, but Steph provided plenty of guidance, made us feel like naturals, and we both walked away with pieces that we love! Listen to Live Music

Downtown York offers something for every type of music lover. Whether you want to rock out, catch an intimate folk show, snag tickets for a nationally touring band, or listen to a local band at Market, there is no shortage of live music to enjoy.

Skid Row Garage is York’s only punk music venue of its kind. It has a grungy(in the best way) underground feel and hosts punk bands from across the country. 

King George Speakeasy : Located under Tutoni’s Restaurant, this modern speakeasy offers elevated cocktails in an intimate lounge setting. Space is first come, first served, so be sure to get there early on nights with live entertainment to ensure you get a seat, and check their performance calendar to plan your visit!

Appell Center for the Performing Arts : This historic theater presents nationally touring performers and films as well as local preforming artists and they even host free events for the community. I (Aleah) saw my first off-Broadway show (Cats!) here with my family, so the Appell Center will always hold a special place in my heart.

Take a Stroll Through Market:

Central Market and Penn Market are two of Pennsylvania’s oldest markets as well as two of the oldest continuously operating markets in the entire United States. They’re also both housed in beautiful, historic buildings and boast a variety of stalls offering fresh produce, artisanal goods, and mouthwatering ready-to-eat treats. Whether you’re looking for farm-fresh ingredients, a delicious meal, or unique handmade crafts, Market is the place to go!

Get Your Game On

Timeline Arcade is an ideal spot for an affordable date night in Downtown York as this enormous arcade offers unlimited play for $10/hr. They have hundreds of both vintage & modern games– from pool, to pinball, to Pacman and everything in between. Different sections are even set up to mirror the decade of the games you’re playing. And if you somehow aren’t sold yet, they’re BYOB. We recommend stopping into Holy Hound Taproom , grabbing a can of your favorite local craft beer, and then heading across the street to the arcade for loads of fun!

Hit the Trail

The Heritage Rail Trail that is! This stone trail is 10-feet wide, ADA accessible, and designed for hiking, bicycling, running, horseback riding, as well as cross country skiing and snow shoeing in the colder months. It extends more than twenty-one miles and connects Downtown York PA to Maryland’s Torrey C. Brown Trail to the south and John Rudy County Park to the north.

We recommend starting at the Colonial Courthouse (pictured below) and making your way south along the Codorus Creek. If you’re up for a longer ride (12 miles roundtrip), make your way to Howard Tunnel (pictured above), which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and boasts the title of being the oldest continually operational railway tunnel in the world.

A visit to Downtown York, PA is a ticket to history buff heaven. This city is home to a half dozen museums and countless historic sites that chronical history from the American Revolution, Civil War, Industrial Revolution, and everything in between.

The  York County History Center  offers visitors access to five different sites: The Historical Society Museum, Library/Archives; Colonial Complex; Fire Museum; Bonham House; and Agricultural and Industrial Museum.

Located on an authenticated site of the Underground Railroad, the Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum highlights the life of William C. Goodridge, a former enslaved person turned successful business man who risked everything to help others escape slavery in the mid-1800s. Note: Tours must be scheduled in advance; check their website for more information and to plan your visit.

Savor the Flavors of the Chesapeake Bay

Downtown York may seem miles away from the salty breeze of the Chesapeake Bay, however, this vibrant city offers a culinary experience that brings the flavors of the Chesapeake directly to your plate. From fresh seafood to Old Bay seasoning, Downtown York has no shortage of delectable delights inspired by the Chesapeake Bay. Read on for some of our favorite orders…

Crab Pretzel: This mouthwatering appetizer features a warm soft pretzel topped with creamy crab dip and melted cheddar cheese. It’s the perfect combination of salty, savory, and satisfying. You won’t go wrong at Granfalloons Tavern or White Rose Bar & Grill .

Crab Cakes: Handsome Cab (they also serve delicious crab deviled eggs), White Rose Bar & Grill , and Roosevelt Tavern all serve delicious Maryland jumbo lump crabcakes.

Crab Dip: Several Downtown York Restaurants offer creamy, hot crab dip with varying degrees of Old Bay and different presentations. We recommend the versions found at Mudhook Brewing Co. (served with tortilla chips or fried pita bread for dipping), White Rose Bar & Grill (spicy, and served in a bread bowl with garlic toast), and Granfalloons Tavern (served in a bread bowl).

Old Bay Chicken Wings: Speaking of Old Bay, the wings at Revival Social Club featuring the star Chesapeake seasoning are 10/10.

Crabby Potatoes: Head to Fig & Barrel for their loaded crab potato tots that are smothered in house made crab dip & cheddar cheese and then melted in their wood fired oven. They’re always delicious and half-off during happy hour! White Rose Bar & Grill ‘s Eastern Shore fries are equally delicious, and topped with their famous crab dip, cheddar-jack cheese, and crab meat.

Oyster Po’ Boy: For a taste of the bayou with a Chesapeake twist, order the Oyster Po’ Boy at Rockfish Public House . Really, if you want all of the above/the best selection of seafood in Downtown York, head to Rockfish Public House.

Seafood Soup: The shrimp and corn chowder at Skillet2Plate Soul Bistro is to die for! They also serve both a lobster bisque and crab soup that we’re dying to try!

Chicken Chesapeake : Find the best in town at White Rose Bar & Grill , and if steak is more your thing, they also serve a delicious filet and crab entree.

Mushrooms Chesapeake : This uniquely delicious appetizer can be found at Roosevelt Tavern and consists of sautéed baby bella mushrooms, jumbo lump crab cake, and lobster cream. So yummy!

If we didn’t already make it abundantly clear, Downtown York, PA, is a destination that seamlessly blends history, culture, and modernity. So whether you’re a history buff, art lover, or foodie, you have to add this historically edgy city to your travel list.

14 Best Things to Do in York, PA

Often called an ‘architectural museum’ thanks to all its beautiful old buildings, Pennsylvania’s York certainly is a very charming city to amble around. Considered by some to be the very first capital of the United States, it has plenty of interesting historic sites and important cultural landmarks to check out.

Delightfully known as the White Rose City due to its namesake in England’s royal symbol, it was founded in 1741 along Codorus Creek. After playing a key role in the American Revolutionary War, it became an important agricultural and industrial center with many of its main sights and museums exploring its storied past.

On top of all these things to do in York, the sizeable city is billed as the ‘factory tour capital of the world’ with tours taking you around candy, chips and motorcycle companies amongst others. Add in all its pretty green spaces and lively performing arts scene and York really is a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered.

14. Weight Lifting Hall of Fame

A fascinating place to explore, the Weight Lifting Hall of Fame shines a light on the rich history and heritage of strength sports. Nestled away on the northern outskirts of town, its artifacts and exhibits occupy the first floor of York Barbell’s headquarters.

The small museum’s location is only fitting as the company is often nicknamed the ‘Father of World Weightlifting’. This is because it tirelessly promoted the sport with its Olympic lifting teams having dominated from the thirties up through the seventies.

As you wander around its light and airy lobby and large galleries, you’ll see all kinds of old weights, barbells and busts of famous champions. Exhibits also explain more about the origins of the sport at the early Olympic Games and its place in ancient mythology. Amateur and professional strongmen from centuries gone by and the current stars of today are both lauded in its fantastic hall of fame.

13. Appell Center for the Performing Arts

While you can actually sometimes catch competitions at the Hall of Fame, the Appell Center for the Performing Arts is a much better bet if you are after a spectacular show. At its two hallowed venues in the center of the city, guests can enjoy everything from concerts and comedy nights to Broadway shows, movie screenings and more.

The undoubted highlight of any night out in York, the ever-popular cultural center includes both the historic Capitol and Strand theaters. While the former dates to 1906, the latter opened in 1925 with their elegant interiors and old-world charm making them a memorable place to watch a show.

Over the years, big acts from Blondie and B.B. King to Ella Fitzgerald, George Carlin and the York Symphony Orchestra have performed on their stages.

12. Samuel S. Lewis State Park

Rising dramatically above the surrounding countryside is the scenic and serene Samuel S. Lewis State Park. Dominated by the 885-feet-high Mount Pisgah, its elevated confines make it the perfect spot to hike, bike, sled and stargaze with kite flying also very popular.

Overlooking the Susquehanna River Valley, its prominent ridge lies about twenty minutes drive east of town. While lush woods and wide-open spaces coat most of it, some rugged rock formations and covered picnic pavilions can be found here and there.

Aside from hiking and biking along its winding paths, you can also sled down the huge hill during winter. As it is quite exposed, and the highest point in the area, the park is a great place to fly kites and either gaze up at the stars or the Susquehanna River far below.

11. Heritage Rail Trail

A wonderful way to see more of the city and its surroundings is to walk, run, jog or cycle along the Heritage Rail Trail. As well as connecting various communities and historic landmarks, it takes you past lots of lovely landscapes, scenery and nature.

Stretching just over twenty miles in length, the multi-purpose path actually runs alongside the active Mason-Dixon line. From the charming Colonial Courthouse in the center, it meanders its way along Codorus Creek before culminating at the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail in neighboring Maryland .

Quite flat for the most part, it passes historical train stations such as those of Hanover Junction and New Freedom, over railroad bridges and through the Howard Tunnel. While the line was once used by merchants, manufacturers and even President Lincoln, the path instead attracts outdoor lovers come to hike, horseback ride or cross-country ski along its picturesque route.

10. Nixon Park Nature Center

Another idyllic, yet interesting spot, to hit up is the Nixon Park Nature Center next to York Reservoir. Besides learning all about the local area’s fauna and flora, it has a plethora of pretty ponds, streams, forests and meadows for visitors to explore.

Set just fifteen minutes drive directly south of downtown, its waterways and woods cover a large part of York County. While ambling along its shady trails, you can enjoy fine views and spot lots of different kinds of animals and aquatic birds either in the undergrowth or out on its reflective lakes.

After exploring the great outdoors, you can check out the nature center’s smallish museum which houses mounted animals, dinosaur murals and colorful butterfly collections. In-depth displays and dioramas also provide more information on various animals, their behaviors and natural habitats.

9. Haines Shoe House

A unique and unusual piece of architecture, the Haines Shoe House can be found on the easternmost outskirts of York, along US Route 30. Instantly recognizable from its distinctive design, it makes for some fantastic photos with tours taking you all around its equally intriguing interior.

Modeled on a work boot, the huge house was built back in 1948 by shoe salesman Mahlon Haines as a form of advertisement. Its five stories contain several bedrooms, bathrooms and a kitchen with the living room being located in its toe and an ice cream shop in the instep.

Inside, visitors can see some of the company’s original advertising memorabilia and a stained-glass window of Mahlon holding up some shoes. After snapping some photos of the striking shoe-shaped house, you can sit and enjoy some ice cream at one of the numerous picnic tables dotted about.

8. Rocky Ridge County Park

Just a stone’s throw from the Haines Shoe House is the Rocky Ridge County Park which offers a myriad of exciting outdoor activities. Amidst all the hilltop’s verdant forests, you can hike and bike about with divine views and scenery guaranteed wherever you go.

Named for the countless rock formations that dot its confines, the park overlooks both the sweeping valleys and rolling hills that surround the Susquehanna River. Plenty of trails wind their way about the ridge with commanding viewpoints being scattered here and there.

Playgrounds, picnic areas and park benches are also hidden away amongst the woods next to barbecue facilities and horseshoe pits. A particularly magical time to stop by is around Christmas when thousands of colorful fairy lights are strung between the trees and Santa visits the park.

7. Historic Downtown

An absolute delight to stroll around, York’s Historic Downtown is packed with loads of beautiful old buildings and attractive architecture. The heart and soul of life in town, it also has all kinds of shops and restaurants, tourist attractions and entertainment options for you to check out.

Although it mainly dates to the Victorian period, downtown actually perfectly preserves over three centuries of American history. Asides from the Colonial Complex next to Codorus Creek, there are also old churches, market houses and a museum looking at the city’s industrial past for you to visit.

In just a few blocks, you’ll uncover sights and stories relating to early pioneers, Revolutionary War soldiers and nineteenth-century farmers. Add in all its bustling businesses and enticing eateries and the happening Historic Downtown area really is not to be missed out on.

6. York County History Center

If you want to learn even more about the rich history, culture and heritage of the region, then make sure to stop by the York County History Center. Located right at the eastern edge of downtown, its immersive exhibits and extensive array of artifacts cover over three hundred years of local history.

First opened to the public in 1989, its historic photos, fine arts and period pieces now occupy what was once an old automobile dealership. In total, around 90,000 objects are included in its collection with exhibits focusing on famous figures, influential places and important events from its past.

The center also runs several other historic sites and museums scattered about the city. These include not just Bonham House and Murals of York but the Colonial Complex and Agricultural & Industrial Museum too. All of these are well worth visiting for the fascinating insight they provide into York, the county and country at large.

5. Martin’s Potato Chip Factory Tour

Considered by many to be the ‘Snack Capital of the World’, Central Pennsylvania contains countless factories and production lines of big snack brands. As such, many visitors take the Martin’s Potato Chip Factory Tour to see the inner workings of the industry and sample tasty treats along the way.

Initially a small family affair, the success of Martin’s crisp and crunchy potato chips eventually saw a large factory set up just southwest of York. Popcorn, pretzels and other salty snacks were also later produced and sold in some of the surrounding states too. Their sumptuous snacks were even available on Air Force One during the presidencies of both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

As you tour the massive factory, you’ll see potatoes frying on the production line and popcorn being made right before you. Besides learning about the process from knowledgeable guides, guests can also try some of their delicious products and buy gifts in the souvenir store.

4. PeoplesBank Park

Just a short distance up Codorus Creek from the center is the intimate and atmospheric PeoplesBank Park. Home to the city’s York Revolution, it is a great place to watch a thrilling baseball game with the season lasting from May through to September.

Only built in 2006, the small stadium has a lovely family-friendly feel and is particularly known for its huge left-field wall, which is remarkably the tallest in professional baseball. Other than the ‘Arch Nemesis’, standout features include its old-fashioned, manually operated scoreboard and the superb statue outside of Brooks Robinson.

While watching the Revolution play before their fervent fans, spectators can enjoy typical ballpark fare with a carousel and playground being on offer to distract kids. Only adding to the excitement is the actual cannon that is fired whenever the team scores a home run or wins a game.

3. York Central Market

Long a firm favorite with locals and tourists alike, York Central Market has now been selling fresh fruit and vegetables for well over a century. Crammed into its humongous historic hall are a diverse array of stands and stalls that seem to sell almost everything under the sun.

Set right next to the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, its gorgeous Romanesque Revival-style building occupies almost an entire block in the downtown area. Since opening in 1888, farmers and vendors have flocked here to hawk their wares with baked goodies, fresh cuts of meat and artisanal products all on sale.

Thanks to its fun and vibrant ambience and friendly and welcoming stall owners, it is always a great spot to shop for some food or grab a bite to eat and drink. Nowadays, about fifty vendors head here each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to sell fresh veg, flowers and food from around the world.

2. Perrydell Farm Dairy

Another of the area’s most popular attractions is the peaceful and picturesque Perrydell Farm Dairy. At its sprawling site just south of the city, you can see cows milked, pet cute calves and try some delicious homemade ice cream.

Since the early sixties, the family-run farm has provided the community with fresh milk and dairy products with over 120 cows now making up its herd. Besides watching them frolic around in their pastures and stroking some in smaller enclosures, you can also take a tour around the farm’s bottling plant and see how milk is processed.

Afterwards, make sure to sample some of their sweet sundaes and scrumptious scoops of ice cream with freshly baked goods, sandwiches and juices also featuring.

1. Harley Davidson Factory Tour

One of York’s most sought-after factory tours though is around the Harley Davidson facility just out of town. Nestled on its northern outskirts, its brilliant behind-the-scenes tour highlights just how the legendary motorcycles are made with its gift store selling apparel, merch and more to motorheads.

Actually one of only a handful of sites to manufacture the motorbikes in the States, it produces the Sportster, Softail and Touring models amongst others. After watching an introductory video, you can visit the assembly line and delve into the various people and products involved in the process.

From fuel tanks and fenders to paints and polish; the tour will teach you everything there is to know about the iconic bikes. Before heading off, it is almost impossible to leave without picking up a few cool mementos in its store to remind you of your time in York.

If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.

This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.

Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia

Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century.  Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!

Attractions in Moscow

When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area

No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.

Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.

On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!

2. Bolshoi Theatre

You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.

Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!

3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM

While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.

If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand. 

All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!

4. Christ the Savior Cathedral

A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.

The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.

Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!

5. Gorky Park

Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one! 

With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.

Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends. 

6. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.

7. Metro Hopping

First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.

Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.

Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience.  Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. 8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow

Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.

Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.

10. Russian Market

If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.

This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.

Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.

Off The Beaten Track Moscow

Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!

11. Patriarshiye Prudy

This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.

A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.

12. ArtPlay

Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.

Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!

13. Shopping Local Designs

If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!

14. Moscow City

Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!

Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow

Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!

15. Where to Eat in Moscow

Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries. 

• For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
• When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
• Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
• As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.

More Dining Options

• Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
• For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
• For delicious Asian food head to CutFish. 
• Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
• Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!

16. Rooftopping

Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.

• As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town. 
• White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
• O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
• Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
• Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
• The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.

17. Moscow by Night

Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.

• Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
• For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
• Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
• At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
• Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting. 
• For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.

There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.

13 Moscow Attractions

One of the most fascinating metropolis, breathtaking city, and a vibrant European capital, Moscow is a powerful mix of history and edginess, full of world famous sites and attractions that are worth exploring. However, it would take weeks to really explore all facets of the Russian capital – unfortunately hardly any traveler has that much time, which is why you should concentrate on the absolute Moscow top attractions and highlights. Here is the list of top 13 Moscow attractions you can choose on your next Russian travel journey.

What Times Square means to New York, Pariser Platz with the Brandenburg Gate to Berlin, or Trafalgar Square to London – Red Square means to Moscow. The heart of Russia’s capital it is the central meeting point and the most famous photo opportunity. No place stands for Russia and Moscow more than “krasnaja ploshchad”, as Red Square is called in Russian.

It is arguably one of the Moscow main attractions and most visited. With the gigantic military parade on Victory Day in World War II, which takes place every year on May 9, the pictures of the square go around the world year after year. But for the rest of the year you will mainly meet local and foreign tourists here, who take peaceful pictures and soak up the unique spirit. The square looks spectacular illuminated at night, but you should visit the square at least once in daylight as well.

If you stand in the middle of the huge cobblestone square, in the clockwise direction you can see the Kremlin and the Kremlin Wall with a total of 20 individually designed towers, Lenin’s Mausoleum, Historical Museum built with red bricks, the little Kazan Cathedral, the impressive luxury department store GUM, the imposing St. Basil’s Cathedral and, the bridge over the Moskva River. This unique ensemble offers more sightseeing highlights at one stroke than any other tourist attractions in Moscow or the world.

So it’s no wonder that Red Square is UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers the most popular photo opportunities worldwide. When visiting Moscow, there is no reason not to visit to Red Square and a selfie is practically also a must – getting there is easy even for Russia newcomers. Although Red Square does not have its own metro station, it is still child’s play to find the way there – especially since the Square is the absolute geographical center of the city.

There are four metro stations in the vicinity, from which it is only a short walk to Red Square, Okhotny Ryad and Teatralnaya directly at the northwest entrance of the Square at the Historical Museum; further to the west is the Lenin Library station, from which one arrives at the same entrance through the Alexander Garden. As well as the station Revolution-square behind the GUM department store, which leads past to the northeast side of the Square.

The Kremlin

This is the biggest active fortress in Europe offering a week’s worth of attractions. For more than 70 years, the Kremlin was the power center of the Soviet Union, which the US President Ronald Reagan called the Empire of Evil exactly 35 years ago, one of the symbols of the East-West conflict in the Cold War. People in the West feared the «dark» plans that were built behind the thick walls of the Kremlin.

The Kremlin is built in a triangular shape on the natural elevation above the Moscow River, known today as the Kremlin Hill. Today’s metropolis Moscow has expanded in a circle around it and the road around the Kremlin is considered the first of several ring roads in Moscow counting.

Now Kremlin has lost its terrifying image, although it is still the seat of the Russian President and thus one of the most important places in World political events. It is an inviting, historical sight for tourists, and one of the famous Moscow tourist attractions which can be visited for just a few dollars.

The large parts of the 28 hectare site can be visited by tourists – with the exception of the Kremlin towers, the presidential Grand Kremlin Palace and the Senate Palace. The first port of call on the site is the so-called Cathedral Square, which is the geographical center of the Kremlin and at the same time the highest point on the Kremlin Hill and contains the three oldest structures in the complex. The three 15 th -century cathedrals of the Kremlin (the Dormition, Archangel Michael and the Annunciation Cathedrals), which together with the Ivan the Great Bell Tower and the Cathedral of the Deposition of Mary, make the most famous ensemble of the Kremlin. Also to be visited here are primarily the Armoury and the Patriarch’s palace.

To get to the Kremlin, you have to pass a security gate at one of the two publicly accessible entrances – these are located at the Kutafja and Borovitsky towers. Tickets cost from 700 rubles upwards, the admission to the Armoury, the Ivan the Great bell tower and the Patriarch’s Palace being paid for separately.

Lenin’s Mausoleum

This is the ultimate love it or hate it tourist attractions in Moscow It may be mistaken for a gloomy performance, but Lenin remains an absolute attraction almost a hundred years after Vladimir Lenin death. The founding father of the Soviet Union is not only a fascinating historical figure of world renown for supporters of communism. Despite ongoing discussions about a final burial of the leader of the communist October Revolution in 1918, hundreds of thousands come year after year to the dark marble building on Red Square, right next to the Kremlin wall, to see the embalmed body of the legendary Russian revolutionary.

First opened to the public in 1924, the Mausoleum attracts 2.5 million visitors every year, so, visitors have to wait a long time to get into the illustrious building. Also, photos from inside the Mausoleum are prohibited. But a visit is still a must for Moscow visitors, especially since the visit is free. Please note that the Mausoleum is only open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The queue starts behind the Historical Museum and before you get into the actual mausoleum, you have to pass an airport-like security gate – cameras and cell phones are not allowed into the Mausoleum, but can be safely placed in a cloakroom for a small fee. On the way out of the Mausoleum, after the visit, you pass the graves of the other Soviet heads of state. Including the grave of Josef Stalin, who was briefly kept next to Lenin in the Mausoleum after his death. But in the course of de-Stalinization, the cruel dictator was moved to the less prominent place behind the Mausoleum.

If you visit Moscow in summer, the hustle and bustle in the metropolis of millions can get over your head. The city, best known for its icy winters, can turn into an absolute burning furnace in summer. It sometimes takes over an hour to get to the edge of the metropolis. The perfect retreat, located in the center of Moscow, is therefore the Alexander Garden and one of the Moscow top attractions.

Located directly on the western wall of the Kremlin, the Alexander Garden is just a small, but all the more well-kept park that extends to the nearby Manege Square (Manezhnaya Ploschad). The garden undergoes a lot of changes, with old trees cut down in 2012 and over 200 planted, the authorities also claim that there will be a rosary of 3000 roses. As soon as the first rays of sun warm up the Muscovites, tormented by the long winter, they set off into the countryside. If you are right in the center, you can choose the small park right by the Kremlin.

With a café in hand, which you can get yourself on Manege Square, you can linger here between the carefully tended flower beds. With the Grave of the Unknown Soldier and the regular changing of the guard, there is even a real tourist attraction on top. Entry is free.

The Moscow Metro

In no other metropolis in the world would the subway be declared a sight. Yes, that is truly right as riding this one of the top Moscow tourist attractions is an experience in itself or just a walk through the station is amazing in itself. Whether in New York, Berlin, London or Paris – the big city inhabitants of the world metropolises have a love-hate relationship with their metro. It’s different in Moscow – the residents of the Russian metropolis love their metro and there is a reason for that: in the early days of metro construction, dictator Stalin had built the stations into “palaces for the workers”.

All the splendor of the tsars, which the ordinary Russian never saw, is now open to everyone, regardless of their origin. Indeed, a number of stations on the Moscow Metro, each built shortly before or after the war, are unmatched architectural masterpieces. Mayakovskaya station is often compared to a ballroom for its chandeliers and ornaments. The Teatralnaya stop, located directly below the world-famous Bolshoi Theater, shines with decorations reminiscent of the country’s theater and ballet tradition. Colorful glass windows, almost like in a sacred building, adorn the Novoslobodskaya station.

But the uncalled queen among Moscow’s metro beauties is Komsomolskaya station, named after the youth organization of the Soviet Union. With its huge chandeliers and detailed ceiling decorations, it is the crown jewel among the 331 metro stations. It is not uncommon for tourists to stand in the middle of the platform and take photos under the glances of passengers who just want to walk past the annoying tourists to and from work as quickly as possible.

A ride on the metro currently costs 57 rubles, which is less than one dollar. You should plan a few hours for a tour of the most beautiful stations, but the good news is, once behind the turnstile, a single ticket is enough to stay in the metro system as long as you want.

The Bolshoi Theater

To see Tchaikovsky Swan Lake or the Nutcracker by the same legendary Russian composer on the famous Bolshoi stage – that is the dream of every ballet fan. Home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, nowhere else is the fine art of musical dance lived as much as in Russia – and has been since the times of the tsars.

The Bolshoi itself has been shining back to its former glory since it was built in 1776 since its extensive renovation that cost almost a billion dollars a few years ago. The large historical hall of the building impresses with its opulent golden decorations and creates a very special atmosphere – this was also used by the communist leaders of the Soviet Union, who held their congresses in the building directly at the Kremlin. The Theater is so famous that it currently adorns the 100 ruble banknote and is among the Moscow main attractions.

If you’d like to go to what is probably the most famous ballet theater in the world today, it’s easier than ever. The program can be found months in advance on the official website bolshoi.ru  and can be ordered at very reasonable prices. The cheapest seats in the hall can be booked for as little as 100 rubles, i.e. less than $ 2. However, you should reserve tickets early, as the performances are usually booked weeks in advance. Even for good seats, you pay very moderate prices compared to Western Europe.

There are a few things to watch out for, however, proper, appropriate clothing is welcome, but apart from the obligation to wear trousers, it is not an exclusion criterion for men. If you arrive late, you have to wait outside until the next break so as not to disturb the other guests during the performance. The best way to get to the Bolshoi is by taking the Moscow Metro via the Teatralnaya station, which was built especially for the theater and which stairs are right in front of the main entrance.

The GUM department store

The Russian abbreviation GUM means main all-purpose shopping center and sounds quite formal for such a shopping temple. Located in front of the Kremlin on Red Square, GUM has existed as a department store since 1920 and was previously a market. It is the most iconic and largest department store in Russia and among the Moscow tourist attractions .   The facade of the building, built in 1890, fits perfectly into the overall picture of Red Square and is illuminated photogenically at night.

In contrast to the scarcity economy of the Soviet era, the GUM today really has everything to offer that one can imagine. It has become the flagship of the shopping and fashion metropolis Moscow. But today you will mainly find smaller luxury shops here. From western high-couture boutiques such as Prada or Gucci to fur for the icy Russian winter, a well-to-do Muscovite or a tourist will find everything their heart desires here.

People can walk through the wide and beautifully decorated arcades of the GUM, free of charge. Cafes invite you to linger. A delicatessen shop on the ground floor sells Russian specialties at affordable prices. Chocolate, honey and caviar, as well as the all-round vodka in Russia, can be bought here as souvenirs for friends and family at home. In addition, the Soviet-style cafeteria on the upper floor is very cheap for lunch.

The GUM offers a special highlight every winter when the department store administration built an ice rink in front of the building directly on Red Square. For only 200 to 300 rubles per hour, depending on the time of day, you can lace up your skates and glide over the ice with the unique panorama of Red Square.

The Historical Museum

The Historical Museum is a museum of Russian history wedged between Red Square, Lenin Mausoleum, small Kazan Cathedral, and Manege Square. The red brick building of the Museum is a real eye-catcher and Moscow top attractions located on the opposite side of St. Basil’s Cathedral. It is dedicated to Russian history and is built in the Old Russian style, the building did not open until 1883.

The Museum houses everything from an exhibition on the archeology of Russia, through the technological achievements, to the art of the gigantic empire in 16 sections and has a total of 5 million exhibits. So if you are interested in the history of Russia, you cannot avoid visiting this Museum and should plan enough time for it.

A visit costs 150 to 500 rubles, depending on which exhibition you want to visit. The Museum is open in winter, autumn and spring from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., closed on Tuesdays. In the summer months, the extended Saturday times apply daily.

It is probably the most famous park in the Russian capital and the top Moscow tourist attractions – a novel and its film adaptation and a Russian rock band have its name and numerous songs by Russian and international bands and TV series, such as House of Cards, mention it or act here. Gorky Park is a premier green space offering entertainment for every taste. Located southwest of the center of Moscow on the Moskva River, it is designed more for family attractions and rest and the classic park on the other side – has become one of the meeting places for Muscovites of all kinds in recent years.

Whether for a yoga class, a family picnic or beach volleyball match, skateboarding, and cycling – people meet here often. Because even in the Gorky there is an ice surface in winter, the largest in Moscow, which attracts many Moscow residents as well as tourists.

A large-scale renovation in 2011 breathed new life into the park – the roller kiosks were removed and more emphasis was placed on the maintenance of the green spaces. The park remained free of charge and developed into one of the most popular places in the capital. Whether with the rental bike through the green lungs, the pedal boat across the numerous ponds or simply watching the goings-on on the park bench – a visit to Gorki is also absolutely worthwhile for tourists.

Day trip to the Golden Ring

As much as the metropolis Moscow is fascinating, the side effects of a cosmopolitan city like Moscow – the noise, the traffic and the crowds – can overwhelm any tourist. What could be better than a day trip to escape the organized chaos of the cosmopolitan city?

The places on the Golden Ring near Moscow are an ideal destination for this and among the Moscow main attractions – located north-east of the metropolis, these old Russian cities, some of which have existed for much longer than Moscow itself, offer a welcome change from the hectic hustle and bustle of the capital.

Developed in the late 1960s uniting several mediaeval Russian cities located to the north-east of Moscow it is the most popular route around provincial cities of central Russia. More than a thousand year old city of Yaroslavl on the Volga is the largest, but at 260 km from Moscow also the most distant city of the Golden Ring. For only 650 rubles, however, you can take the three-hour train ride there.

Yaroslavl has been part of the world cultural heritage since 2005 and is best known for its two monasteries – the Monastery of our Savior and Transfiguration and the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Tolga are located directly on the Europe’s longest river Volga and its inflow Kotorosl. Both testify to the long history of the Russian Orthodox Church. The cityscape of Yaroslavl is also really worth seeing with its classicist buildings – walking through the streets of the city with 500,000 inhabitants is a welcome contrast to Moscow. Things are even more slow in the small towns of Suzdal and Vladimir, both of which can still be reached with the Moscow suburban train network (known as Elektrichka) for a good 500 rubles. In both cities time seems to have stood a little – large sacred buildings dominate the cityscape.

Especially the Assumption Cathedral, located in the center of Vladimir, and the Golden Medieval Gate are the main attractions for tourists. The church, built in the early 12th century, is best known for its almost 700 year old wall paintings and frescoes and is a World Heritage Site. The Suzdal Kremlin is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and was first mentioned in writing in 1024.

Suzdal with its only 10,000 inhabitants has still retained the character of a small Russian town and in the town, which will celebrate its millennium in 2024, you can still find numerous wooden buildings typical of rural Russia – whether churches or houses, the colorful buildings are ideal as Photo motif and give an impression of the simple Russian provinces life away from the metropolises.

The exhibition of the achievements of the national economies is not in every travel guide as a classic Moscow main attractions and a must see of the Russian capital. But no other place in the modern mega-metropolis exudes the spirit of the Soviet Union as much as the enormous VDNKh (All Russian Exhibition Centre) in the north of Moscow. It was built as an agricultural exhibition before World War II, but was then renamed world exhibition for the 15 individual Soviet states and their achievements.

From the Armenian, Estonian and Kyrgyz culture, to the Soviet achievements in space travel and nuclear power, to statues about the heroes of the Soviet history, the VNDKh (Vystavka Dostizheniy Narodnogo Khozyastva) was an absolute attraction until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. After that, the old charm fell into disrepair and the large central pavilion, which was built in the splendidly pompous Stalinist style, was filled with small traders selling souvenirs and matryoshkas.

Since its renovation in 2014, the exhibition in the park-like area is absolutely worth a trip again and with the metro station of the same name you can get from the center to the VDNKh quickly and without problems. There are still strange souvenirs, plus huge Soviet monuments worth seeing, as well as numerous rides for children. The Kosmos exhibition still exists and is now part of the Cosmonaut Museum, which is located at the front end of the park when coming from the metro station.

Here you can experience the various achievements of Soviet and Russian space travel vividly. From the very first Sputnik satellite, the spacesuit of Yuri Gargarin, the very first human in space, to the Buran space shuttle, you can learn an incredible amount about the conquest of the cosmos here. However, you should plan several hours just for a visit to the Cosmonaut Museum.

The Pushkin Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery

To complete the cultural program in Moscow, you should definitely make a tour to the Pushkin Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery when visiting the Russian capital. It is the largest museum of European art and among the Moscow top attractions. The former Museum of Fine Arts was named after Alexander Pushkin’s death in 1837 – it is still one of the most important art collections in the world today.

It boasts one of the richest collections of foreign art in Russia, showcasing global artistic developments from early times to the present day in expositions numbering 700,000 works of art.  Not far south of the Kremlin, exactly opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the Museum is housed in a classic building specially built for this purpose in 1898. From early Byzantine art to the famous Madonna by Lukas Cranach, the Italian masters, Peter Paul Rubens and masterpieces of Expressionism, for example by Paul Cézanne, you can admire a huge selection of important art here.

The regular entry ticket costs 800 rubles and the Ьuseum is open on weekends from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., during the week until 8 p.m. – only Monday is closed.

The second important art collection in the capital is the State Tretyakov Gallery. It is the national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the greatest museums in the world. Started by the textile entrepreneur and philanthropist Pavel Tretyakov as a collection of local contemporary art in 1851, the gallery has now developed into one of the cultural highlights of Russia. In contrast to the Pushkin Museum, you will primarily find Russian art from the 19th century and older icons.

Entry cost is 400 rubles and the Gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. – Monday is also the day off.

Universal Orlando has set an opening day for its DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios theme park and unveiled summertime plans for a new parade, new nighttime lagoon show and new castle projection show at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade.

DreamWorks Land is scheduled to debut June 14, Universal announced Monday. The area will feature activities based on movies such as “Shrek,” “Trolls” and “Kung Fu Panda.”  It will also feature a “multisensory live show” titled “DreamWorks Imagination Celebration.” The new land, which includes a ride called Trollercoaster, has been built on part of the former Woody’s KidZone , which closed in January 2023.

June 14 will also mark the first performance of “CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular,” a nighttime show with 600 drones, 228 fountains and 4K projection mapping. Universal said the show will use music and scenes from films that have “inspired Universal Orlando’s past, present and future attractions.”   It listed “Jaws,” “Ghostbusters,” “Back to the Future,” “King Kong,” “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “Fantastic Beasts,” “How to Train Your Dragon” and others.

Disney sets August start date for Epcot Food & Wine fest

That evening, “Hogwarts Always” will debut next door at Islands of Adventure theme park. The show will feature “iconic moments of a school year” at Hogwarts, Universal said.

The new Universal Mega Movie Parade will roll into Universal Studios on July 3.  It will be the park’s largest daytime parade to date, the resort said, with 13 new floats, almost 100 performers and a 16-foot Stay Puft Marshmallow Man on the “Ghostbusters” float.  A “Jurassic Park” unit will bring up the rear of the parade.

Icon Park introduces fresh eats, more live music

Universal has not shared a daily schedule for the new presentations, although its website lists the parade, castle show and lagoon show as being presented on “select days.”
