Entertainment | a last-minute guide to pokemon go tour: sinnoh in los angeles, what do you bring to pokemon go tour in la extra batteries and water are a must but leave a few items at home.

Pokemon Go Tour: Sinnoh -- Los Angeles will take place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. (Archives)

Pokemon Go Tour: Sinnoh — Los Angeles is here. It’s the first event of its kind in California and the celebration at the Rose Bowl will be drawing fans from the Bay Area, Southern California and beyond. Aside from the main event, a few extra activities are going on before it starts Feb. 17 and Feb. 18.

One of those is the a special quest line called Ghost in the Machine. It’s apparently related to Rotom and players at the Rose Bowl Stadium will have to piece together a code that will unlock a Rotom encounter for trainers worldwide.

EXTRA QUESTS AND SHINY TARGETS Another special quest features Spiritomb and it’s related to 108 special Pokestops that have popped up in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Trainers have located all of them and mapped them out. Personally, I ran across five of at least nine at Disneyland, but they’re scattered around Southern California. If players spin 10 stops, they earn an encounter with Spiritomb. The quest line reportedly starts Friday.

Pokemon Go Tour Los Angeles map

The event itself takes place at the Rose Bowl and the grounds around it in Pasadena from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The play area is divided into four zones: Bubbling Mire, Entangled Ruins, Mountain Hot Spring and Seaside Metropolis. It will basically be Disneyland for “Pokemon Go” fans, where you’ll be meeting hundreds of other trainers and catching shinies that you may have missed.

Each of the zones has at least one shiny variant that hasn’t been released or was hard to obtain. They include: female Combee , Hisuian Voltorb , Finneon , Shellos (both forms), Hisuian Qwilfish , Hisuian Growlithe and Hisuian Sneasel . Players will also have a chance at obtaining a shiny Unown H, I, N, O, S and U .

In addition, eggs will have a chance to hatch shiny variants as well. The No. 1 target will likely be Mime Jr. from 2km eggs. That’s because this regional Pokemon must be hatched, and Pokemon Go Tour LA is one of the rare chances players can get one stateside. The other sought-after pocket monsters will be shiny Chingling from 2km eggs; shiny Hisuian Voltorb, Hisuian Qwilfish and Stunky in 5km eggs; and shiny Pachirisu, Chatot and Carnevine in 10km eggs. These aforementioned variants will make their debuts.

The most important thing to bring to any “Pokemon Go” event is extra power. That means players should have a battery pack or two on hand. A Pokemon Go Plus + or an equivalent device is also helpful. Players should also make room because they’ll be doing a lot of catching. Thankfully, Niantic reportedly increased storage before the event. The maximum Pokemon storage is now at 7,800 and the maximum items available is 6,800. Be sure to stock up on extra Pokeballs before the big day so that you can just focus on catching.

When it comes to other items to bring, Niantic is allowing a few things such as normal-size backpack, strollers and two sealed water bottles (refillable ones are OK). On the other hand, there’s a long list of prohibited items. That includes totems, flags, banners, umbrellas, skates, scooters and bicycles. No outside food or beverage aside from the water will be permitted. There will be on-site vendors at the Rose Bowl and there will be some that accommodate special dietary needs.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

Here's the basic science behind New Jersey earthquakes and the Ramapo Fault

2-minute read.

go tour map

That was not your imagination. New Jersey and other areas on the East Coast experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.

After Friday's unusual experience, many may wonder what caused the earthquake and how strong it was compared to others in the state or worldwide. Here are what the experts say about the science behind an earthquake.

What causes an earthquake?

An earthquake occurs because of slippage between the earth's tectonic plates, according to the U.S. Geological Survey .

The edges of the plates, or plate boundaries, are made up of many faults, and most earthquakes occur on these faults. "Since the edges of the plates are rough, they get stuck while the rest of the plate keeps moving," according to the USGS. "Finally, when the plate has moved far enough, the edges unstick on one of the faults and there is an earthquake."

In New Jersey and elsewhere, earthquakes usually occur "when slowly accumulated strain within the Earth's crust is suddenly released along a fault," according to "Earthquake Risk in New Jersey," a publication of the New Jersey Geological Survey.

More: The April 8 solar eclipse is almost here, North Jersey. Here's your complete viewing guide

"The energy from this movement travels as seismic waves along the ground surface and within the earth," the publication says.

The earthquake waves are caused by the release of energy as the Earth's plates move, said Dr. Matthew Gorring, an associate professor of Earth and Environment Studies at Montclair State University.

The surface where that slippage occurs is called a fault.

While there are many faults in New Jersey, the best known is the Ramapo Fault, which runs northeast-southwest in North Jersey. The majority of New Jersey's quakes occurred around this fault area.

History: Friday's earthquake was the strongest in NJ since 1783. A look back at quake history

The Ramapo Fault system runs from southeastern New York to eastern Pennsylvania, according to the earth Institute at Columbia University. "These faults were active at different times during the evolution of the Appalachians, especially in the Mesozoic when they served as border faults to the Newark Basin and other extensional basins formed by the opening of the Atlantic Ocean approximately 200 million years ago."

In New Jersey, fault lines do not generally break the Earth's surface, but are based several miles below.

Earthquakes east of the Rockies are generally less intense than to the west, but because of geologic differences, eastern earthquakes tend to affect areas 10 times larger than western ones of the same magnitude, according to the New Jersey Geological Survey.

The location below the earth’s surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter and the location directly above it on the surface of the earth is called the epicenter. The epicenter for Friday's earthquake was near Readington in Hunterdon County according to a post on X from Gov. Phil Murphy.

How major is a 4.8 earthquake?

Earthquakes are recorded using seismographs and magnitude measures the strength of an earthquake. A 4.8 earthquake usually calculates minor to no damage to the surrounding areas.

As the magnitude increases by one whole number, the size of the earthquake increases by a factor of 10. So an earthquake that measures a magnitude of 5.0 would result in 10 times more ground shaking than one with a magnitude of 4.0. — and about 32 times as much energy would be released.

According to a New Jersey Office of Emergency Management report, "New Jersey is in an area where the rarer plate interior-related earthquakes occur. As plates continue to move and plate boundaries change geologically over time, weakened boundary regions become part of the interiors of the plates. These zones of weakness within the continents can cause earthquakes in response to stresses that originate at the edges of the plate or in the deeper crust."

Friday's earthquake will go down in the history books in New Jersey as it was the largest in the state in centuries — in fact the largest since 1783.
