Star Trek: Picard -- trailer, cast, plot, release date and more

Patrick Stewart beams back into the world of Star Trek as Jean-Luc Picard. Here's all the latest news on the cast, plot, release date, prequels and dog.

imdb star trek picard cast

He's coming back.

Patrick Stewart is going where no Starfleet captain has gone before: into his very own series, decades after wrapping up his original Star Trek run. He'll have a furry companion, old crew mates along for the ride and plenty of new characters to contend with.

Caution: There may be minor spoilers below.

Star Trek: Picard , a CBS All Access streaming show, will debut on Jan. 23, 2020. The show follows on the heels of Star Trek: Discovery , but the two series take place at very different points in the Trek universe.

CBS All Access is feeling pretty confident about the show. It has already been renewed for season 2 . (Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of CNET.)

A  trailer  for Picard came out of San Diego Comic-Con  in July, and it was a surprise-packed doozy. The trailer revealed that Star Trek icons Brent Spiner (Data) and Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) will appear in the new series.

Picard will hook up with a new non-Starfleet crew in a quest to protect a mysterious woman named Dahj (Isa Briones) who comes to him for help. The Borg, one of the most imposing Star Trek villains ever created, will play a role in the plot.

Jonathan Frakes (William Riker) and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi)  will appear in Picard as their Next Generation characters. We also know Jonathan Del Arco will reprise his role as Hugh the Borg.

A teaser trailer beamed in on May 22, 2019 , shows that Jean-Luc Picard, who was promoted to admiral, led a rescue armada on a mysterious mission 15 years prior to the show's events. He then left Starfleet, leaving us to wonder what prompted his exit and why he's reappearing now.

CBS first revealed the official Star Trek: Picard name on May 15 and posted a look at the show's logo. The Starfleet logo takes the place of the "A" in Picard.

A Star Trek: Short Treks episode Children of Mars set up some backstory for Picard, highlighting attacks from "rogue synths" on Mars while Picard was still a Starfleet admiral. The main series should fill in the blanks here.

NYCC drops hints

picardsevenofnine

This Seven of Nine costume explainer talks about the former Borg member's changes over the years.

New York Comic Con in October 2019 quickly became a hot spot for mining new details on Picard .

Star Trek had a booth on the convention floor stocked with costumes and a few character details related to the new show.

A set of descriptions explaining the costuming didn't give us much news about our admiral, but one of them clued us in to what former Borg member Seven of Nine has been up to since the events of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Seven of Nine has become more comfortable with her humanity in the intervening years," the description read, saying this is represented in her "more casual, stylish and decidedly human clothing."

We also learned the mysterious Dahj arrives at Picard's vineyard in France "with a cut on her head and a strong feeling she can trust Picard implicitly."

A pup for Picard

Stewart and CBS revealed the key art for the show on July 10, just ahead of the star's appearance at San Diego Comic-Con .

The dog, a pit bull, is particularly notable. Zoom in on its ears. They may have been cropped, but they also look a lot like pointy Vulcan ears. Stewart is known for his work fostering rescue dogs. His most recent foster, Emma, is a pit mix with cropped ears.

Stewart shared a photo of Emma along with his hidden Picard rehearsal script in April. The dog in the poster sports a Starfleet emblem tag on its collar and his name is now confirmed as "Number One."

Revisiting Jean-Luc Picard

Stewart, who on Jan. 13 created an imprint for display at the iconic Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, has a long history with the Star Trek franchise. He first warped into the iconic role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise with the debut of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. That means Stewart will be back in Picard's shoes more than 30 years after originating the role. He last appeared on screen as Picard in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis .

  • The Next Generation finale has me pumped for new Picard series
  • Picard is the hero we need, says Star Trek writer Michael Chabon

He's been plenty busy in the meantime, continuing his role as Professor X in the X-Men movies , up through a farewell performance in 2017's  Logan . He has a lot of voice acting credits to his name, including Poop in The Emoji Movie . Fans can also catch him as Bosley in a 2019 version of Charlie's Angels .

Stewart announced the new Picard series in August 2018 at the Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. He called his return "an unexpected but delightful surprise" and said he hopes "to research and experience what comforting and reforming light [Picard] might shine on these often very dark times."

Who's making Picard?

Stewart is doubling as an executive producer along with Alex Kurtzman, the creator of Star Trek: Discovery. Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon is on board as an executive producer and writer. Chabon described Picard as "the hero we need right now."

Stewart shared a behind-the-scenes photo in September 2018 from a Picard meeting where he's sitting with Chabon and other members of the show's production staff. Stewart has been involved with the writing for the show from early on.

Hanelle Culpepper will make history as the first woman to launch a new Star Trek television show. Culpepper directed the first two episodes. She has an extensive TV resume, which includes Star Trek: Discovery, The Flash and Gotham.

Frakes, who will appear as Riker in the show, has a long career as a director that includes multiple Star Trek franchise entries on both the big and small screens. He directed some episodes of the new series. Frakes posted a photo of himself with Stewart to Twitter on May 21, 2019, and tagged Star Trek on CBS.

The Picard plot

CBS and Stewart had kept pretty quiet on the details of the show's plot until the teaser and full trailer arrived. We already knew it takes place around two decades after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis.

The teaser lays out a big plot point when a voiceover says Admiral Picard commanded a rescue armada that "led us out of the darkness" 15 years before the series picks up. It asks the questions: What did it cost him and why did he leave Starfleet? That's a huge cliffhanger to contemplate ahead of the show's debut.

Star Trek: Picard

The Star Trek: Picard poster shows a Starfleet logo formed from grapevines.

Both the teaser and trailer start in a vineyard, which is a callback to the final TNG television episode in 1994, All Good Things  that showed one possible future Picard working in a vineyard in France. That Picard had become an ambassador. We know the Picard in the new show was promoted to admiral at some point.

A poster for the series shows a vineyard with the Starfleet logo formed out of grapevines along with the catchphrase "The end is only the beginning."

Picard's history ties strongly in with the Romulans. "Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire," Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter .

The 2009  Star Trek  reboot movie covered the demise of the planet Romulus at the hands of an exploding star in 2387. Could this event have been the focus of Picard's rescue armada?

The reboot movies take place in the alternate Kelvin timeline, but Picard is firmly located in the prime Star Trek timeline, in the lineage of the TV shows that came before it.

"We're in the prime timeline. Events from the Kelvin timeline impacted Picard. If you look at that movie, the destruction of Romulus was in the prime timeline," Kurtzman clarified during a Television Critics Association press event in January .

Picard has a complicated history with the Romulans. In Nemesis, he tangled with a Romulan clone of himself.

The trailer features a Borg ship that may be acting as a prison vessel staffed by Romulans. A sign says it has gone 5,843 days without an assimilation.

Don't expect a mere reboot of The Next Generation. "Patrick was very clear to us in the beginning. He didn't want to repeat what he had already done. And by the way, it's been 20-plus years, so he couldn't possibly be that same person anymore," Kurtzman told reporters in January 2019 .

We have a lot of questions about what Picard has been up to all those years, and some of them were answered in a series of prequel books . CBS, Simon & Schuster and comics publisher IDW released Star Trek: Picard -- Countdown, a three-issue comic book miniseries in November. This focused on a life-changing mission for Picard.

A full Picard tie-in novel called The Last Best Hope is due in February 2020. Una McCormack, author of several Star Trek novels, is the author of the book.

Picard's place in Trek

Stewart's Picard took on the weight of Star Trek's future when he stepped up to captain the Enterprise-D. Until then, the Trek universe had revolved around the original crew led by Capt. James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner. Kirk and the gang had re-emerged from the shadow of the original series' cancellation in the '60s and were born again through a string of successful movies starting in 1979.

Stewart's character couldn't have been more different from the leap-into-action, kiss-the-aliens Kirk. Picard created a new mold for Starfleet captains. His Picard was cerebral, wise and measured, but also passionate. If you need a reminder, watch his defense of android crew member Data as a sentient being in the season 2 episode Measure of a Man.

How to watch

Star Trek: Picard will debut on Jan. 23, 2020. It'll stream in the US on CBS All Access and on the Space Channel in Canada. Internationally, Amazon Prime Video will host each episode within 24 hours of the US premiere in over 200 countries and territories. That's a change from how Discovery is distributed internationally through Netflix.

Now retired and residing at his family vineyard, the Starfleet admiral is called into action for one final mission after receiving a distress call from Beverly Crusher.

Aside from Picard, Stewart is best known for playing Professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” movie franchise. His character recently crossed over to the MCU, appearing as a member of the Illuminati in “Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.”

imdb star trek picard cast

Jonathan Frakes as William Riker

Picard calls upon his former first officer for assistance. Riker, no longer in command of the U.S.S. Titan and needing some time away from his family, jumps at the opportunity.

After “TNG,” Frakes appeared in numerous shows and hosted “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction.” He’s also a prolific director, with episodes of “Roswell,” “The Librarians,” “Star Trek: Discovery” and even “Picard” under his belt.

imdb star trek picard cast

Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi

Troi is the former ship’s counselor and is married to Will Riker. They have a daughter, Kestra. As a half-Betazoid, she is able to read the emotions of others.

Sirtis (and Frakes) voiced lead roles in the animated series “Gargoyles.” She’s appeared in numerous shows in the U.S. and U.K. including “NCIS.” She reprised the role of Troi in Season 1 of “Picard.”

imdb star trek picard cast

Brent Spiner as TBD

Data, the beloved android who served on board the Enterprise and perished in a battle against the Romulan warlord Shinzon. Whether Spiner is playing Data, his evil brother Lore, or some other being is to be determined.

Although his character Data was killed in “Nemesis,” Spiner has played various characters with familial connections to Data in other “Trek” series and films. He’s also known for playing Dr. Okum in the “Independence Day” films.

imdb star trek picard cast

Michael Dorn as Worf

Worf is the former Enterprise security chief. Despite being raised by humans, his Klingon heritage imparts a strong sense of honor, particularly in battle.

After “TNG,” Dorn joined the cast of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” He’s appeared in more “Trek” shows than any other character. He’s also lent his voice talent to numerous shows.

imdb star trek picard cast

LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge

La Forge is the former Enterprise chief engineer. He is currently running the Starfleet museum. He also has two daughters in Starfleet.

Prior to “TNG,” Burton was the beloved host of “Reading Rainbow.” There was a campaign to have him replace Alex Trebek as the host of “Jeopardy,” and he even guest-hosted. Like Frakes, Burton has directed numerous episodes of “Trek” series.

imdb star trek picard cast

Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher

Crusher is the former Enterprise chief medical officer. She lost contact with her crewmates but reaches out to them in a time of need. She and Picard had a former romantic relationship that became a close friendship.

McFadden starred in “Marker” and “Mad About You” after her stint on “TNG.” She’s also reprised the role of Dr. Crusher on “Star Trek: Prodigy.”

imdb star trek picard cast

Jeri Ryan as Annika Hansen/Seven of Nine

After being rescued from the Borg, Seven joined the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager. She later joined the Rangers, a space vigilante group, before re-enlisting in Starfleet. She is currently the first officer on the U.S.S. Titan, where she goes by Annika Hansen, her human name before assimilation.

Ryan wasn’t a part of the “TNG” cast. She joined “Star Trek: Voyager” in 1997. Her character was extremely popular, and she reprised her role in Season 1 of “Picard.” After “Voyager” Ryan starred in “Boston Public.”

imdb star trek picard cast

Michelle Hurd as Raffaela “Raffi” Musiker

Musiker served with Picard late in his Starfleet career but burned out. She eventually helped him root out Romulan spies. She re-enlisted in Starfleet and joined the U.S.S. Excelsior crew, but has since taken on a special mission.

Hurd is best known for playing Monique Jeffries in “Law and Order: SVU” and Ellen Briggs in “Blindspot.”

imdb star trek picard cast

Amanda Plummer as Vadic

Very little is known about the villainous Vadic. She captains the warship Shrike and has a grudge against Picard and the Enterprise crew.

Plummer, the daughter of legendary thesp Christopher Plummer, had had a long career on stage and screen. But her most memorable role might be playing “Honey Bunny,” one of the restaurant robbers in “Pulp Fiction.”

imdb star trek picard cast

Stashwick is no stranger to the “Trek” universe, having appeared in “Star Trek: Enterprise” as Talok. He appeared in the sci-fi show “12 Monkeys” from 2016-18.

Star Trek's Picard: An Updated Cast List

imdb star trek picard cast

CBS All Access has a lot of Star Trek shows planned down the stretch. Though many of the upcoming projects have a fair amount of hype surrounding them, none measure up to the collective excitement fans new and old have for the untitled Picard sequel series. After years away, Jean-Luc is finally returning to television for another adventure in the Star Trek universe.

While we have no confirmation whether any of Picard's old friends from Star Trek: The Next Generation will be appearing, we do know a few new faces will be joining the Starfleet captain on a new journey that may take them from one end of the galaxy to another. Check out who's on board below, and be sure to check back for updates as we draw closer to the show's premiere.

Professor X Logan Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart - Jean-Luc Picard

Patrick Stewart is back to portray his iconic character first introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation , but we've been told to expect a different version of the character for this sequel series. Although not much has been said beyond that, the hiring of character-focused director Hanelle Culpepper for the show's first two episodes appears to indicate the changes to Picard's character will be significant. What exactly happened to him after all this time?

We do have some clues as to what Picard's life will be like, as it's been said the dissolution of the Romulan Empire will greatly impact his life. The event was referenced in the 2009 movie Star Trek , in which Ambassador Spock and Nero were sent back in time. That in turn created the new Kelvin timeline. Now, it would appear we'll get to see how the Prime timeline moved forward following tha event, and specifically, the effect it had on Picard.

Santiago Cabrera Salvation

Santiago Cabrera - ???

Santiago Cabrera comes onto Picard in an officially undefined role, but we do have some unconfirmed rumors to go off of courtesy of Deadline . Cabrera is rumored to be playing Picard's pilot, and is also known for his abilities as a thief. Hopefully he's only stealing from those off the ship, otherwise that's going to cause some problems on the bridge.

Cabrera has been on fixture on television since the mid 2000s, and is likely recognizable by anyone who's watched Big Little Lies , Salvation , or The Musketeers series. In the world of science fiction television, folks may remember Cabrera had a run on NBC's Heroes as Isaac Mendez. As a series regular, audiences can expect to see quite a bit of Cabrera throughout Picard , so start getting used to his face now.

Michelle Hurd Blindspot

Michelle Hurd - ???

Michelle Hurd's character name and role are unknown, although rumors have stated she's playing a former intelligence officer. That could mean former Starfleet intelligence like Section 31 , or she could be from another alien species and was a part of their intelligence team there. Whatever the case may be, this character is pretty good at her job, and doesn't even let things like her drug and alcohol addiction get in the way of her work.

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

Hurd has been on a lot of high profile television shows as of late, with her most recent roles coming from NBC's Blindspot and CBS' Hawaii Five-0 . Those are just a couple of the many roles Hurd's had over the years, as the television actress has been in everything from Daredevil to ER to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit . It goes without saying she's a big get for the series, but we'll say it anyway because we're psyched to see her performance.

Section 31 Starfleet Badge Star Trek: Discovery

Evan Evagora - ???

One of the true mystery characters to Picard is the one to be played by Evan Evagora. There aren't even rumors about how he'll contribute to the series. One thing worth noting, however, is that Evagora is younger than the previously cast characters in Picard , which means he probably won't be a character with some formal training in any specialized field. Oh no, this isn't going to be another Wesley Crusher, is it?

It's always possible, although rumors of a character who suffers from a drug and alcohol addiction may mean this show is free from over-confident children regularly messing things up. Plus Evagora is young, but he's at least of Ensign age provided Starfleet is around in this show. That still has yet to be confirmed, as does whether or not these crew members are human or otherwise. Put simply, it's best not to speculate until we have more information.

The Picard series -- which has yet to be officially given a name -- is still in development at CBS All Access but is expected to premiere later this year . CinemaBlend will continue to keep an eye on its development and provide updates on its progress as the months drag on. For more television shows on the way in the meantime, head on over to our midseason premiere guide .

Star Trek: Discovery's Alex Kurtzman & Michelle Paradise Talk Final Season

The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery finds the USS Discovery continuing to rebuild the United Federation of Planets in the 32nd century. But the crew are tasked with a secret mission that could shake the galaxy to its core. And as Discovery embarks on its final voyage, it brings the characters and series full circle. The season is filled with plenty of action and emotional moments for new viewers and longtime fans alike.

In an interview with CBR before the April 5, 2024 season premiere, Star Trek: Discovery showrunner/executive producer Michelle Paradise and co-creator/executive producer Alex Kurtzman talk about the evolution of the series. They also reflect on shifting to make Season 5 close out the show and explain the creative joys of moving to the 32nd century.

CBR: Star Trek: Discovery started as a war drama and became a series focused on rediscovering hope. How has it been charting the show's evolution?

10 best star trek spinoffs, ranked.

Alex Kurtzman: It's been a wonderful experience! It's funny that you characterize it starting out as a war show. It's true that we started out in the middle of the Klingon War, but that was never really the intention of the show long-term. Really, the purpose was for Burnham to start out as a mutineer and come full circle as who she is at the end of Season 1 -- facing her demons and coming out the other side of it.

What it did was it also set a compass for us in terms of exploration, in the kind of show we wanted to make. We always knew we wanted to get Burnham into the captain's chair . That's what was always so exciting – how do you get from mutineer to captain? We knew that it was going to take multiple seasons to get there. The more the characters have grown and our relationships with the actors have grown, the two become very symbiotic.

You'll see that the last season of Discovery comes back to a fundamental question of Discovery , which is "Where did we come from?" It feels like a very fitting way to go.

How was it pivoting during production on Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 -- going from finishing the story in Season 5 to telling a coda for Discovery as a whole?

Every finale in the star trek franchise, ranked according to imdb.

Michelle Paradise: We found out after we finished shooting the entirety of the season that this would be our final season. We are so appreciative to CBS and Paramount+ for giving us the opportunity to go back and shoot some more material... It will feel like we planned it all out this way because it's thematically so resonant.

Like Alex said, it comes back around, in many ways, to the basis of Discovery , which is about ourselves. Getting some additional material to wrap it up in a way that feels satisfying to the series, feels satisfying in [and] of itself.

You've reimagined classic Star Trek elements 900 years into the future, and that's something that's right there in the Discovery Season 5 premiere.

Review: discovery's final season is a bittersweet star trek symphony.

Kurtzman: It's really fun! We knew that, by jumping to the 32nd century, we were able to remix Star Trek in a way. All the enemies would be allies, all the allies would be enemies, everything would be upside-down. Ultimately, I think the thing we never wanted to betray was the core of Star Trek and the core of who those characters and species were. It was fun to play with it because it was suddenly fresh snow. You're not necessarily married to one way of doing things because a show that's already come 100 years ahead tells you that this is what happened to the Romulans, so you can't necessarily deviate. Now, we're in a new era.

Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 premieres April 4, 2024 on Paramount+, with new episodes released Thursdays.

Star Trek: Discovery

The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well... dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

Picard commanded the Enterprise for seven seasons of TNG and four movies, and returned years later in three seasons of Star Trek: Picard . With his diplomatic skills and collaborative command style, Picard remains one of Starfleet's most celebrated and accomplished officers.

As seen in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3, 4, and 5, Captain Picard's accomplishments continue to be referenced in the 32nd century. Star Trek: Discovery's Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) may have a different command style from Picard, but her action-oriented approach works well for the fragile United Federation of Planets of the 32nd century. Even over 900 years in the future, Burnham's missions sometimes call back to those of Captain Picard. Although Burnham and the Discovery crew are from a time before Jean-Luc Picard was even born, his name has come up three separate times during their adventures in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

3 “unification iii” - star trek: discovery season 3, episode 7, references picard's meeting with ambassador spock in tng's "unification".

The first mention of Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Discovery comes in an episode that serves as a sequel to an iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter . In TNG's "Unification," Starfleet sends Captain Picard to look for Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy), who was last seen on Romulus. Picard eventually finds Spock and learns that the Vulcan Ambassador has been working on a "personal mission of peace" to bring the Romulans and Vulcans back together. Spock has come to realize that his goal cannot be achieved through traditional diplomatic means, but he is pleased to find that many young Romulans are beginning to embrace Vulcan philosophies.

Among the 'personal files of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard,' Michael finds footage of Spock as he speaks about his goal.

In Star Trek: Discovery's "Unification III," Burnham seeks information about a project known as SB-19, which involved the Vulcans and Romulans working together to find a faster form of space travel. As Burnham prepares to make her request, she learns that her foster brother Spock was responsible for starting the process of Vulcan/Romulan reunification . Among the "personal files of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard," Michael finds footage of Spock as he speaks about his goal. Spock knew that his ultimate goal of reunification would not be achieved until long after his death, but even in the 32nd century, he is remembered as the one who made reunification possible.

The Qowat Milat, Romulan warrior nuns introduced in Star Trek: Picard season 1, were also revealed to have lasted into the 32nd century in Star Trek: Discovery season 3.

2 “Anomaly” - Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 2

References picard's synthetic golem body from star trek: picard season 1.

As the crew of the USS Discovery investigate the Dark Matter Anomaly, also called the DMA, Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) and Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) work together to find a way to save Adira's partner, Gray (Ian Alexander). Despite Gray's supposed death, Adira was still able to see and speak with him, so Dr. Culber began researching ways to reunite Gray's consciousness with a new body. Culber came across the experiments of Dr. Altan Soong (Brent Spiner) , who had developed a method of transferring a consciousness into a synthetic golem body. Although the Soong Method had a very low success rate, Culber notes that it worked for Admiral Jean-Luc Picard.

Jean-Luc Picard's name drops in Star Trek: Discovery show a synergy with Star Trek: Picard.

In Star Trek: Picard season 1, episode 10, "Et in Arcadia Ego: Part 2." Jean-Luc finally succumbed to his terminal brain disease. Before Picard's consciousness fully dissipated, however, Dr. Altan Soong transferred it to the synthetic golem body he had constructed. Picard's new synthetic body was identical to his human one and would allow him to live the life he would have had if not for the abnormality in his brain. Gray receives his own golem body in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, episode 3, "Choose to Live." With help from Trill Guardian Xi (Andreas Apergis), Gray's consciousness was successfully transferred to the synthetic body, allowing him to continue with his life.

In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Admiral Picard's brain abnormality was revealed to be the result of dormant Borg DNA that had been left from his time as Loctus of Borg.

10 Star Trek: Discovery Positives You Only Notice On Rewatch

1 “red directive” - star trek: discovery season 5, episode 1, references picard's meeting with the progenitors in tng's "the chase".

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere , Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery get pulled into a galactic treasure hunt with connections to Captain Picard. The Federation's Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) sends Discovery on a top-priority mission classified as a "Red Directive," to find and retrieve an artifact from an 800-year-old Romulan science vessel. Discovery arrives too late to retrieve the artifact, a Romulan puzzle box, which had already been stolen by couriers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis). After Michael tries and fails to retrieve the puzzle box, she confronts Kovich for more information about the mission.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 already has more connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation and Captain Jean-Luc Picard than any previous season.

Kovich reveals that the Romulan puzzle box contains information regarding the Progenitors, the ancient humanoid race that is believed to have created all humanoid life. In his briefing, Kovich says that Captain Picard "found a message left by a race of ancient beings," referencing the events of TNG season 6, episode 20, "The Chase." A Romulan scientist, Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeman), had been present on that day and had continued to research the Progenitors, eventually storing his diary within a Romulan puzzle box. After two episodes, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 already has more connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation and Captain Jean-Luc Picard than any previous season.

This Underrated Star Trek: The Next Generation Season is Actually the Show's Best

While there are many great seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the final outing for the crew of the USS Enterprise-D might be the series' best.

  • Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 7 received critical acclaim and high ratings.
  • The Next Generation's series finale, "All Good Things," is considered one of the best Star Trek episodes.
  • Challenges faced during The Next Generation Season 7 led to character growth and excellent storytelling.

When Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted, it was a series that wasn't supposed to succeed. No sequel show ever ran longer than or surpassed the original in popularity before and is still a rarity. While fans will point to one of the middle seasons as the best of Star Trek: The Next Generation , a case can be made for Season 7, the final for the ensemble cast. The Next Generation could've gone past Season 7, but it might have had to do so without Captain Jean-Luc Picard , as Patrick Stewart was eager to move on. In fact, according to The Fifty-Year Mission by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, there was a tense period of negotiations between Stewart's representatives and the studio to get him back for Season 7.

A big part of what sold his return, apparently, was the plan for the cast to finish the show and immediately begin filming the seventh Star Trek movie that became 1994's Generations . This led to three more films and, after a break of about 20 years, Star Trek: Picard . While many of the most iconic storylines involving the crew of the USS Enterprise-D happened in The Next Generation Seasons 3, 4, 5 and 6, the seventh doesn't get enough credit. The finale, "All Good Things," is unquestionably one of the best Star Trek finales of any series, even Picard 's award-winning final episode. However, there are plenty of wonderful things throughout the season, the ill-advised romance between Troi and Worf notwithstanding.

Why Star Trek: The Next Generation Ended With Season 7

Without lucille ball, star trek would've failed before its pilot episode.

Star Trek: The Original Series only got three seasons in which to make itself an unforgettable pop culture icon. Even without the requisite 100 episodes, The Original Series became the highest-rated scripted series in syndication for two decades, supplanted only by The Next Generation . Seven seasons was a dream the producers dared not even hope for, but circumstances aligned that made it the "right" year to end the series . While fans and cast didn't understand the decision, it wasn't necessarily unwelcome. "Everybody pretty much would agree…the seventh season got off to a…rocky start," story editor Naren Shankar said in The Fifty-Year Mission , adding, "we went out of the sixth season on a real roll, and it was creatively very exhausting."

A feature in Entertainment Weekly published in 1994 quoted castmembers like Jonathan Frakes who simply didn't understand the move just the same. In the same article, executive producer Rick Berman offered up an answer. "All I can tell you is that the decision to end Next Generation after a seven-season run was made at least two years and two Paramount regimes ago," he said . With the perfection of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ending the run of the The Original Series actors, Paramount simply believed a feature film series with these characters at the height of their popularity would be more profitable.

Additionally, the budget for The Next Generation kept going up as the actors commanded higher quotes and the stories became more elaborate. The writers were also exhausted. There was no break between the final seasons. Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga were writing multiple episodes of the series and the script for Generations . Showrunner Michael Piller was overseeing Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , developing Voyager with Jeri Taylor and said he felt like "an absentee landlord" when he worked on The Next Generation , in The Fifty-Year Mission . In the same book, Taylor said every "year it got harder…to find things that haven't been dealt with" on the series before. The most heavily featured actors, Stewart and Brent Spiner, were also reaching exhaustion. Yet, despite all these challenges, Season 7 was excellent.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 7 Critical Scores

The highs and lows of tng season 7 were very high and not that low, 10 star trek next generation guest appearances that changed tng.

As any passionate Star Trek fan will admit, every season has some episodes that simply aren't very good. Of course, one of the ironies of this is that fans will never agree on which episodes they are. One such episode in contention for the "worst" is Season 7's "Masks," in which an ancient space-library transforms Data and the ship itself into a version of their society. Yet, while the episode is, as Moore said, "pretty out there," he also agreed the series had to "take those risks and…do something bizarre." (And it's still not as bad as Season 6's "Aquiel," where Geordi's dog is an evil shapeshifting alien.)

While the "bad" episodes were at least centered on interesting concepts, the better-received episodes were some of the series' best . "There were about five episodes in the middle of the seventh season that were as strong a group of episodes as I have ever been a part of, going from "Parallels" to "Pegasus" to "Lower Decks," which was really one of the wonderful shows of the year," Piller said in The Fifty-Year Mission . He even included "Sub Rosa" in which Beverly Crusher has an affair with a ghost. Piller is right, as these stories stuck with Star Trek fans, including Mike McMahan, creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks . They played with sci-fi concepts, like time travel, and Star Trek sacred cows, like the Prime Directive.

Another episode seen as a low point, "Force of Nature," doesn't really deserve that reputation. The writers wanted to play with the idea that warp drives were harming spacetime, creating an environmental allegory that's one of the most heavy-handed in the show. Still, the episode features great character moments like Data's training of his cat Spot. The episode even brought back the Ferengi, which were originally hated by fans , with a DaiMon character that felt like a real person and not just a sinister villain. Even exhausted, the writers, directors, cast and crew were turning in excellent work week to week.

'All Good Things' Is a Great Series Finale, and May Be TNG's Best Episode of All Time

What made worf a better klingon warrior on star trek: the next generation.

It's no accident the final scene of Star Trek: Picard evokes the final scene of The Nexte Generation's "All Good Things," with Picard and his Enterprise family playing a friendly game of poker. It was the perfect way to end those characters' stories, and after the films and the series, refocusing the final moment on their friendship was the right call. "We knew we wanted it to be special and the culmination of everything that makes Star Trek special," co-writer Brannon Braga said in The Fifty-Year Mission . While everyone loves a starship and cool alien species, what makes Gene Roddenberry's universe stand apart from others is all too human.

The series finale wasn't just a story about Picard slipping through time, but how his connections to the crew were his constant. While Picard is distant from the crew because of his position as captain, he's actually more involved in their lives than Captain Kirk ever was for Chekov, Sulu and Scotty. In "All Good Things," that dynamic changes as an increasingly angry Picard becomes more confused as he's unstuck in time. He shows the vulnerability it took Kirk three movies (and losing his son) to uncover. Meanwhile, the rest of the characters realize their potential, but in their success, it's still not as "good" as when they were all serving on the Enterprise together.

Why Star Trek: The Next Generation's Final Season May Be Its Best

How william shatner unearthed star trek: tng's early troubles.

Like any series, Star Trek: TNG struggled in early seasons , but it faced pressures no new series does. The Next Generation had to stand on its own as a worthy science fiction series, while also living up to Star Trek 's place in American culture. Perhaps because of all the hurdles in their way, the cast and producers pushed themselves to live up to both standards. Things were even more difficult in The Next Generation Season 7, and perhaps the new level of pressure "made diamonds," as Braga put it.

The journey to its final season was satisfying and full of important, wonderful Star Trek stories. However, if overseen by different executives with different priorities, The Next Generation might have joined the ranks of series like Smallville or Supernatural in terms of longevity. Season 7 delivered as many excellent episodes as previous seasons, but it also allowed characters to grow and change. Deanna Troi seeks a promotion , and she starts a committed relationship with Worf. Data continues to evolve, and Wesley Crusher goes off to become a traveler. Ro Laren defects from Starfleet.

The Next Generation never really leaned into lasting change for its characters. As a first-run syndicated series, audiences were not guaranteed to see the episodes in order. There were emotional and character arcs throughout seasons, but with the end coming, the writers made much bigger moves. Season 7 of Star Trek: The Next Generation didn't feel like a final season so much as it felt like an evolution . It promised change and bigger stories that might have been easier to deliver on television than in feature films.
