Overall this was a great tour that was filled with do many things that I can cherish forever, the only thing id say is that sometimes the heat was unbearable for some of the things we wanted to do like the hikes. I think for the waterfalls, there should be an alternative or accomodation for people who really struggle with climbing up all those steps. We had the best tour guides ever, Pui and Gogi were amazing! Informative, fun, and always there to help us when needed!

Thai Intro 18 Day Tour

Thai Intro 18 Day

Just finished the 18 day tour with Dan (and Joe!) and it was truly epic! I had the time of my life…didn’t have to worry about anything, perfectly organised and I met some amazing people! I had to have a medical procedure on my foot during the last leg of the tour, which was pretty traumatic! Luckily Dan went above and beyond, took me to hospital visits and was a shoulder to cry on (quite literally!). Along with his and others’ support I only missed one activity, which I’m soo thankful for. Dan is a credit to Intro, and I’ve definitely fallen for Thailand ❤️. Deposit paid for my next tour, and I can’t wait to do it all over again! ????

What people love about Indochina Tours

This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing. He made sure to have enough time for anyone and helped in anyway he could to make things run smoothly for everyone on tour including myself. If you go on this tour, make sure you ask for Tong or (Phanet Tep) as your CEO!

Classic Indochina

Covering the best of four countries, this luxury indochina tour celebrates the cultures of an evocative region.

Indochina, land of enchantment and mesmerizing encounters, region that fuses mysterious heritage with the cultures of yesterday. It's a landscape dominated by legends: the temples of Angkor, karsts of Halong Bay, architecture of Luang Prabang. It's also a destination of surprise, filled with riverside villages and untold stories. This signature luxury tour showcases the best of Indochina, encompassing four countries in three weeks of private travel. You'll see a new side to the iconic wonders and experience all manner of culinary and cultural treats.

Intimate and immersive, this luxury tour joins the jigsaw pieces of Indochina. You'll experience a hidden side to world-famous sites, going behind the scenes at the Khmer temples of Angkor and the new seven wonder of Halong Bay. Going off the beaten track you'll meet the tribes and cultures that occupy Indochina's remote lands. Blissful journeys, old walled cities, flamboyant temples, culinary treats...these 20 days showcase the contrasting sides to the region. Along the way, you'll discover the history through exclusive encounters with Indochina's most colorful characters. It's more than just four countries, it's an in-depth journey into everything that makes Indochina so alluring.

Iconicity and Surprise in Thailand

Northern Thailand epitomizes the atmosphere of this luxury tour, brimming with sights and sounds while running to a delectably laid-back rhythm. You'll escape into remote Nan Province, land of rare hill tribes and serene mountain landscapes. In Chiang Mai you'll meet with monks and uncover the secrets of a city that was long cut off from the world. Bangkok is your first destination and it also loves to surprise, with expert guides showcasing the charm beneath the neon. These three destinations provide Thailand's inspiring overview; a captivating city holding keys to the past, the unknown region waiting to be discovered, Chiang Mai's cultural heartbeat stitching a country together.

Cultural Luxury in Laos

Luang Prabang is easy on the eye and decadent for the soul. Bare-footed monks wandering beneath cute colonial architecture, temples of color and intrigue, riverfront terraces for watching the world unfold. This living World Heritage Site is your first stop in Laos and an indelible connection to the spirituality Indochina is so famous for. From here you cruise upriver, visiting villages unconnected by road and experiencing cultures who love to entertain. Serene and surreal, these four nights in Laos are about opening all your senses to Indochina's essence.

Behind the Scenes in Angkor

Next the unmissable icon, the mesmerizing temples of Angkor, ode to the ingenuity of the Khmer Empire. A local historian leads the discovery and you won't miss any of the most famous sights; tree roots sprawling around temple walls, nature taking over, grandeur on a baffling scale. Then you’ll unearth the areas lesser-known stories, visiting local shrines and temples off the tourist radar. And like all the days on this tour, the sightseeing is complemented by little treats. Enjoy handpicked dinner reservations that reveal local flavors, settle into Indochina’s most atmospheric boutique hotels, and discuss history with those that lived it.

Contrasting Worlds in Vietnam

Vietnam’s four World Heritage Sites fill the last week of this luxury Indochina tour. Cook with a renowned chef in Hoi An, then wander the quaint lanes of this riverside city. Cross jungle and mountain to reach Hue, where regal heritage mixes with war stories and ancestral fables. Fly to Hanoi, where the Old Quarter is just the start of the contrasts as you eat pho with artists and meet a decorated fighter pilot. Halong Bay provides the tranquil finish, two days of cruising through limestone karsts on the area’s most opulent vessel. Hidden coves, poignant caves, lost beaches...these two days provide the natural escapism to complete the cultural exploration.

Luxury Arrivals into Bangkok

indochina travel land

The Bangkok skyline glitters from your riverfront hotel, the neon of night reflecting gently in the waters below. Sit down. Relax. Absorb the views from the balcony and feel the glow of serenity that comes when you complete a long journey. Through 25 years of experience we handpick Indochina best hotels, so even after a lengthy flight it doesn’t take long to recuperate. You’ll be greeted at the airport and assisted through expedited immigration, before a transfer into the city and the dreamy riverside views.

History and Tradition Hidden in the Capital City

indochina travel land

Oh how Bangkok likes to surprise, the capital city a maze of suburbs and lanes that connect the centuries. At first glance it’s big and bright and bustling. Yet journey beneath the flashing lights and there’s enchantment with every step. The Royal Palace, ode to grandeur, place of serenity. Wat Phra Kaew, symbol of a nation’s heritage. Atmospheric Chinatown, colorful weekend markets, vibrant tones in an Art Village, and then watching the world float by on a Klong canal cruise. This day effortlessly connects the city’s iconic highlights, each step unraveling the nuance of culture.

Best of Bangkok Street Food Then Into the Forest

indochina travel land

Legendary food carts dot the corners of the city, known to the locals yet easily missed by tourists. They showcase and celebrate, specializing in iconic dishes and recipes unchanged since their ancestors’ time. A foodies tour picks out these longstanding favorites to provide insight into the basics of Thai food. Then the pace of life changes dramatically, a short flight transferring you to the northeastern province of Nan, where forests and mountains create the laid-back atmosphere.

Escapism and Connection in Nan

indochina travel land

Nan Province provides a fairytale escapism that’s more commonly associated with Thailand’s beaches. It feels cut off from the world, an enclave of tranquility that’s as green as the imagination can muster. Two nights here introduces the old-world atmosphere of Indochina, an atmosphere that will continue for most of the next two weeks. On the one hand it’s an escape. Yet you don’t escape into nothingness. Nan is home to some of Indochina’s rarest tribes and today’s leisurely tour offers an inspiring introduction to their lifestyle and culture.

Through the Mystique of the Mountains to Chiang Mai

indochina travel land

It’s a five-hour journey to Chiang Mai by private car. But what a journey! Weaving beneath the forest canopy, winding across remote hills and mountains, passing the beautiful expressions of daily life. As Chiang Mai approaches you bask in its isolation: until the 1920s, the city was only connected by torturous multi-week elephant and boat journeys. It’s this seclusion that gives Chiang Mai its delightful ambiance. Your boutique hotel is nestled inside the old city walls, enveloped by the architecture of Thailand’s ancient cultural heart.

The Beauty of Wandering

indochina travel land

A morning in Chiang Mai, an afternoon and evening in Luang Prabang, two cities of world heritage that encourage you to wander. History is etched into the crumbling walls, serenity floats on the incense smoke, and a local guide tailors the discovery to your interests. Choose to wander alone or allow the guide to show you the corners where heritage is most expertly represented. Amongst the exclusive experiences are a Baci welcome ceremony in a local family home and a unique encounter with a laconic monk.

Spirituality Unfolds in Luang Prabang

indochina travel land

Luang Prabang is Indochina’s most evocative living World Heritage Site. It’s not merely a snapshot of the past, but the expression of a distant time and ambiance. A procession of bare-footed monks ushers in sunrise, cafe terraces beckon beneath colonial architecture, sublime Buddhist temples dominate the hilltops, and local markets send their colors and shouts into the air. Spend the day exploring with one of the country’s best guides, then spend an evening cruising the Mekong River, dining besides the wonders of the waterfront.

Contrasting Worlds Around Luang Prabang

indochina travel land

Luang Prabang has soul, something that can’t be expressed in a single monument or moment. It’s a city that encourages you to explore every backstreet, one that asks you to stop and converse with strangers, one that combines quiet charm with the beauty of heritage. The city’s surroundings bring contrast. Hike to a waterfall hidden from the world, gaze down from Mount Phuosi, journey by elephant, and discover the work of NGOs that continue a battle against unexploded ordinances left behind by the Vietnam American war. Like always, the day’s pace is relaxed and the guide will outline other potential options.

Exploring the Untouched Villages of Rural Laos

indochina travel land

Travel northeast from Luang Prabang and there are no roads to take. Everyone must journey by river, passing the sleepy villages that dot the banks. Local life plays out in all its glory as you cruise the Nam Ou River to Muang Ngoi; children bathing and waving, women washing clothes, men fishing, animals and crops balanced precariously on narrowboats. This is rural Indochina in its rawest form, a world that’s resisted the trapping of modernity. You’ll spend time trekking and meeting the locals, before a night in Nong Khiaw, a nearby riverside village that offers more luxurious accommodation.

From Buddhist Monks to Khmer Empire Sunsets

indochina travel land

This luxury Indochina tour is more than just places. It’s also about the people. Over the last 25 years we’ve become friends with some of the region’s most unique characters, people who show you a unique slice of history. This morning you return to Luang Prabang and meet with experienced monks, learning from their seemingly surreal ways. In the afternoon you fly to Siem Reap for dinner with one of Cambodia’s pre-eminent historical guides, enjoying a sublime sunset over the pagoda-dappled landscape.

The Splendor of Angkor

indochina travel land

A sunrise over the plains, temples glowing through reds and oranges as morning arrives. A day amidst the wonder, exploring the baffling array of temples. An evening watching the locals perform, with dance and circus that further enlightens you onAngkor’s tradition. With over 50 large temples and hundreds of smaller shrines, Angkor requires at least two full days. There’s the celebrated and unmissable, like tree roots wrapped around crumbling temple walls, or the enormous grandeur of Angkor Wat itself, the world’s largest religious building.

Angkor Thom, Ta Phrom, Banteay Srei...you won’t miss the iconic sights. But with an historical guide, two days in Angkor are mostly about the secrets and stories, about the drama that unfolded during the Khmer Empire. Our signature tours are focused on these unique details, on showing you sides to famous attractions that aren’t plastered over Google and Instagram. Angkor isn’t just a few temples, it’s the tale of an empire, a narrative that inscribed on all the nature-wrapped pagodas.

First Impressions of Vietnam in Hoi An

indochina travel land

Completing your Cambodian experience is a final evocative sunrise, a morning exploring Angkor Wat, and a lunch at a Siem Reap restaurant that fuses French flair with indigenous ingredients. A direct flight takes you to Vietnam, where you’re welcoming by the delightful atmosphere of Hoi An, a riverside town that’s perfect for discovering at leisure. Take your time on the narrow lanes, unearthing antiques stalls and cute boutiques, wine bars and freshly barbecued fish. Hoi An is a first impression that lives long in the memory, an insight that has you eagerly wanting for more.

Culinary Heritage and Delights of the Coast

Some mornings on this luxury Indochina tour are about early starts and maximizing the beauty of sunrise. Others mornings, like today, are about lounging on quaint cafe terraces, savoring the scent of bean-to-cup coffee fumes. Following the fragrances you join Tring Diem Vy for an interactive cooking class, learning culinary secrets from the chef that put Hoi An on the gastronomic map. The afternoon is leisurely, with options for downtime at the beach and opportunities to unravel the subtle depths of the Hoi An World Heritage Site. Round it all off with a sunset cruise, watching the fishermen bringing back the day’s catch.

Journeying Through the Green of Rural Vietnam to Hue

Every journey across Vietnam brings pleasure. Views from mountain passes, winding roads beneath thick jungle canopies, coastal paths overlooking untouched beaches. The one from Hoi An to Hue is probably Vietnam’s most spectacular, a juxtaposition of the landscapes and colors in the heart of the country. Like always, it’s a private luxury transfer. But unlike others, a closed mountain pass will be opened just for your journey. Arrive to sunset cocktails at the Emperor Hotel then dine with Boi Tran, a regal artist that shares an undocumented piece of Vietnamese history.

Best of Hue and the Vibrancy of Central Hanoi

Vietnamese history is effortlessly expressed in Hue, a series of attractions that have very contrasting tales. Folk stories at Thien Mu Pagoda, imperial legacy at the War Tombs, ancient architectural beauty in the remains of a citadel that played a crucial role in the Vietnam American War. Each comes from a different century and each has a complexity that goes beyond Vietnam’s preconceptions. Later in the day you land in Hanoi, where your luxury hotel is tucked amongst the labyrinthine lanes of the Old Quarter. Like in Hoi An, there’s so much reward when you explore at leisure.

Cultural Complexity of Hanoi

Hanoi impresses the senses from every angle. A sunrise stroll on Hoan Kiem Lake, perhaps joining the locals performing tai chi. Swirling smells and euphonic sounds in the Old Quarter market, home of the capital’s local indulgences. A bomb shelter and a mausoleum, poignant and peaceful remainders of the city’s history. Then a bowl of traditional pho with artist Dao Anh Khanh, discussing the dilemma of cultural innovation in a communist state. Round off the day with another exclusive dinner reservation; throughout this luxury Indochina tour, we’ve handpicked restaurants that celebrate the best of each destination’s local food, from fine dining to concealed local haunts.

Lost Amongst the Karsts of Halong Bay

Your luxury boat glides effortlessly through the karsts, propelled by the wind towards hidden coves, lost beaches, strange caves and green pinnacles. Silence reigns, elevating the dreamy aesthetics. You’re deep within a mysterious world, cruising through the recently celebrated new seven wonder of the world. To spend a day here is to witness the extravagance of nature. To spend two nights is to experience the grandeur of nature in all its glory. Mist fluttering amongst the karsts, a rainbow of green reflecting in the water, unique scents and echoes that accompany each of the caves.

Travel to Halong Bay on day 18, stopping to visit a local village on route. Walk aboard the bay’s most opulent vessel and watch the karsts arrive from the sun deck. Over this afternoon and the next day there are various excursions, including some idyllic kayaking. You’ll venture out to the distant reaches of this World Heritage Site, exploring landscapes where other vessels are conspicuously absent. And when morning arrives and the mist starts to clear, you’re enveloped by the mystery that nature has created.

Exploring More of Hanoi and Departure

A final morning in Vietnam and it’s one to savor, the karsts slowing casting their shadow over the bay. It’s a three-hour luxury transfer back to Hanoi, where there’s time to explore more of the city’s intricacies. Completing the tour is another unique encounter, being invited into the home of Vietnam’s most decorated fighter pilot. It’s another chance to hear a story that hasn’t left Indochina, one that compels and confounds in equal measure. Depart Indochina from Hanoi and spend most of the flight recounting the contrasts and comparisons between these four unique countries.

Similarly, a 10-day tour of Cambodia can include visits to the magnificent Angkor Wat temple complex and the charming city of Siem Reap. These shorter trips provide a taste of Indochina’s diverse offerings while accommodating those with limited time constraints.

Currency & Tipping

In Vietnam, the currency is the Vietnamese Dong , in Cambodia, it’s the Cambodian Riel, in Laos, it’s the Lao Kip, and in Thailand, it’s the Thai Baht. Tipping customs differ, but it’s generally appreciated in the service industry. Check local customs for appropriate tipping practices. It’s important to note that the exchange rates for these currencies may fluctuate, so it’s advisable to check the current rates before exchanging money.

Indochina Travel Guide: The currency in Indochina varies across countries

Additionally, when using foreign currency in these countries, it’s recommended to have smaller denominations as some establishments may not accept larger bills.

Indochina is a region of Southeast Asia . It has no fixed definition. Most narrowly, it is the former French colonies of Vietnam , Cambodia and Laos , which were collectively known as French Indochina during the colonial period until the Indochina wars . However, it is sometimes considered to also include Thailand , which was never colonised, and Myanmar , a former British colony, both of which share many cultural similarities with the other three countries, which include the dominance of Buddhism as the main religion. Peninsular Malaysia is sometimes included, but only rarely, as it does not share the same cultural similarities as the other five.

This article focuses on the former French colonies of Vietnam , Cambodia and Laos .

Understand [ edit ]

Indochina's culture is, as its name suggests, influenced by the Indians and Chinese, as well as its colonizers. For at least 2000 years (and to this day), Indochina, alongside other countries of Southeast Asia , has acted as a conduit for trade between India and China. Cambodian and Lao culture are heavily Indian-influenced in areas such as faith, folklore, language and writing. Vietnam is the most Chinese-influenced. All three countries have substantial Chinese influence in their cuisines, not least due to significant Chinese immigration to the region during the colonial era.

Buddhism is the dominant religion in the region, with Mahayana Buddhism being the dominant form in Vietnam, and Theravada Buddhism being the dominant form in Cambodia and Laos.

In Indochina, the seasons can be broken down into hot , wet and dry , with the relatively cool dry season from November to February or so being the most popular with tourists. The scorching hot season that follows can see temperatures climb above 40°C in April, cooling down as the rains start around June. However, even in the "wet" season, the typical pattern is sunny mornings with a short (but torrential) shower in the afternoon, not all-day drizzle, so this alone should not discourage you from travel. There are, however, regional deviations from this pattern. Northern Vietnam, for instance, has four distinct seasons, with chilly winters; a climate similar to that of Hong Kong .

Talk [ edit ]

English is a traveller's most useful language overall, although for longer stays in almost any country of Indochina, picking up at least some of the local language is useful, and may be essential outside the cities.

The main language groups are:

  • Austroasiatic - Vietnamese and Khmer are spoken in Vietnam and Cambodia respectively.
  • Tai–Kadai - Lao is spoken in Laos mutually intelligible with Thai to a certain extent.

The Chinese languages have a large influence, and due to centuries of Chinese cultural dominance, much of Vietnamese vocabulary consists of loan words from Chinese. Khmer and Lao also contain numerous loan words from various Chinese dialects due to the influence of Chinese immigrants during the colonial era. Indochina is a prime destination for China's rising tourism industry, and Mandarin is becoming more prevalent in order to cater for it.

Due to a long history of Indian influences in the region, many languages of Indochina, including Thai, Lao and Khmer contain many loan words from Sanskrit . As a result of this influence, the Khmer and Lao scripts are Indic scripts related to those of Thai, Burmese and many Indian languages.

French is still spoken and taught in Indochina, although its situation varies by country. In Vietnam, it is known by many educated Vietnamese, especially those schooled before 1975, though today English is the more preferred second language among youths. In Laos, French is widely used among the educated populace and features on most public signage. In Cambodia, French is limited chiefly to urban and elderly elites and a handful of university educated students. That said, all three languages contain numerous loan words from French, particularly when it comes to modern concepts.

Get in [ edit ]

Cambodia and Laos offer visas on arrival at most points of entry. Vietnam requires advance paperwork for most visitors.

By plane [ edit ]

The main international airports of Indochina are at Ho Chi Minh City ( SGN  IATA ) and Hanoi ( HAN  IATA ), which serve numerous intercontinental flights to Europe and Australia. The airports at Vientiane ( VTE  IATA ), Phnom Penh ( PNH  IATA ), Siem Reap ( REP  IATA ) and Da Nang ( DAD  IATA ) also serve international flights to other Asian destinations.

By train [ edit ]

There are two railway lines into Southeast Asia; one between Hanoi , Vietnam and Nanning , China , and onward to Beijing , Russia and even Europe , and another from Kunming to Vientiane , Laos . An extension of the latter onward to Bangkok is under construction, but completion is a long way away. There are no connections between Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries yet, although there are plans for links through both Cambodia and Myanmar onward to the existing Thailand - Malaysia network. Such plans have existed since the colonial era, but China's "Belt and Road" initiative has injected them with new vigor and capital. Laos also has a single railway station on the outskirts of Vientiane connected to the Thai railway network..

Get around [ edit ]

Public transport networks in Indochina tend to be underdeveloped. However, due to reckless driving habits, driving is also usually not for the faint-hearted. Most of the time, plane, bus or rail travel tends to be the best way to get around.

There are local means of transport based on converting a motorcycle, truck, van or even bicycle to haul passengers. Unmodified motorcycles also provide taxi services in various places. All these modes of transport are generally cheap and rather colorful, but somewhat uncomfortable and perhaps dangerous.

Be aware of various scams when crossing national borders. If someone offers to help you obtain a visa for the next country, or tries to direct you to a "health check", you can be certain that that person is trying to scam you. In Indochina, it is not uncommon for immigration officers to ask for bribes to stamp you in or out of the country; this is not a problem at airports, but bribes of up to US$10 per person are often demanded at land borders.

Much of Indochina is now covered by a dense web of low-cost carriers, making this a fast and affordable way of getting around. Due to the popularity of budget carriers, flights on full-service carriers are not as widespread as they used to be, with many routes now being served solely by budget carriers. Nevertheless, the respective national airlines still offer options between major cities in the region. The larger multinational budget airlines and most national carriers are respectable, but some of the smaller airlines have questionable safety records, especially on domestic flights using older planes. Do some research before you buy.

Due to the high rates of road accidents in most the region, trains in Southeast Asia are generally considered to be a safer option than buses, especially during the night, although in several cases the journey by train takes longer than by bus.

Vietnam has a line linking the country from north to south but speeds are rather low.

Cambodia 's railways were badly hit by the civil war, though they are beginning to be rehabilitated since the 2010s. Passenger services now connect, the capital Phnom Penh with the seaside resort town of Sihanoukville , and takes longer to arrive than a reasonably determined cyclist. It is not possible to go all the way through Cambodia to Thailand by rail, though the line from Phnom Penh to Poipet at the Thai border was reopened in 2018 after a break of 40 years, from which you can cross the border by road to connect onto a Thai train bound for Bangkok.

A new railway line from Kunming in China to Vientiane was completed in December 2021, and with the line passing through Luang Prabang , thus making domestic rail travel possible in Laos for the first time. An extension of this line onward to Bangkok is under construction.

Traditional architecture [ edit ], colonial architecture [ edit ], nature [ edit ], do [ edit ], buy [ edit ], eat [ edit ].

Cuisines differ significantly between the three countries, and often between different part of the same country as well.

As a result of the legacy of French colonial rule , all three countries share a love for baguettes , which are typically stuffed with meat (usually pork) and/or pâté, as well as various local herbs.

Drink [ edit ]

Coffee is a popular beverage in all three countries due to their French colonial heritage.

Beer is widely available in all three countries, with each one having its own local brands.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Violent crime is rare in Indochina, but tourists have been attacked in beach resorts in a few isolated but well publicised cases. Opportunistic theft is more common, so watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas and keep a close eye on your bags when travelling, particularly on overnight buses and trains. Major dangers are very poor road safety, as well as little or no oversight of physical activities such as white water rafting and bungee jumping.

Unexploded ordnance is a major problem in Indochina due to the legacy of the Indochina Wars , and locals continue to be killed or maimed by them on a regular basis. Be sure not to approach unfamiliar objects, and to not stray off the beaten path, particularly in rural areas, as these could still have uncleared mines and bombs.

Stay healthy [ edit ]

In Vietnam , while public hospitals most certainly lag far behind the standards of the West, there are internationally accredited private hospitals in the major cities that are run to international standards. Laos and Cambodia generally have poor healthcare standards, so you will almost certainly want to travel to Thailand or Singapore for any major procedures; ensure that your insurance covers this.

Respect [ edit ]

You may be asked to take off your shoes quite often, especially when entering temples or guesthouses. Wear shoes that can be slipped on and off easily, particularly if you're planning to visit a lot of temples, and make sure your socks aren't full of holes. At Buddhist temples, the areas where you have to go barefoot differ by country. In Laos , shoes are taken off before entering temple buildings and private houses.

Buddhist monks [ edit ]

As in neighbouring Thailand, Theravada Buddhism is the dominant religion in Laos and Cambodia. This means that monks are revered and are expected to take their duties seriously. Monks must avoid physical contact with females, so women who wish to offer food to a monk should place it on a piece of cloth in front of him so he can pick it up. Monks are not allowed to accept or touch money, and offering money to a monk is considered to be disrespectful in the local culture. Should you wish to donate, donate food. As monks are not allowed to eat solid food after noon, they will stop collecting alms before then. "Monks" who hang out at tourist spots and solicit donations from tourists are imposters. Some undertake a vow of silence, and will not answer you even if they can understand and speak English. It is best not to compel them to stand next to you for a photograph, or try to start a conversation if they seem reluctant.

Vietnam follows the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, meaning that monks and nuns are required to be vegetarian, and will either grow their own food or buy it using temple donations. As such, they generally do not go on alms rounds.

Go next [ edit ]

  • China — The world's most populous country and one of the oldest civilizations, with a vast array of cultural and natural treasures among the frenzied development.
  • Myanmar (Burma) — Ancient country west of Indochina with staggering ethnic diversity, whose history includes both an indigenous empire and being part of the British Empire, now emerging from isolation under a strict military junta.
  • Thailand — Located at the west of Indochina, Thailand is known for rich culture and cuisine with frenetic cities, chilled-out beaches, and remains of Buddhist kingdoms, making it a very popular destination with visitors returning time and again.

Indochina Itinerary – Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam Tour

Indochina Itinerary – Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam Tour

The Indochina trail is South East Asia’s most infamous travel route. A popular itinerary crosses 3 countries, namely Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam. It often extends to Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, and Singapore.

This trip is very exciting, especially among travelers embarking on their first multi-country journey in the region. I highly recommend it because you’ll be able to see many awe-inspiring sights including the Grand Palace & temples in Thailand, majestic Angkor temples in Cambodia & energetic urban scene in Vietnam. Of course, all the while enjoying the different cultures and cuisines along the way.

I’ve followed the Indochina trail and have been to these Southeast Asian countries separately many times. Because of its popularity, the trip is very doable even with little planning.

How to spend 7 days in Indochina?  Check out my recommended Indochina itinerary below. The sample itinerary is easy to follow or customize in case you plan to go for 5 days, 2 weeks (14 days) or more. Scroll down to see the detailed do-it-yourself (DIY) itinerary blog, followed by a budget/expenses breakdown and lots of extra travel tips.

Bangkok can get quite hot during midday hours. Here are some suggestions on places you can go in Bangkok. Choose one that suits the kind of places you want to see: (1) Jim Thompson House, (2) Bangkok mall or (3) Wat Saket (Golden Mount temple), Giant Swing & Wat Suthat.

Jim Thompson House  — For culture lovers. Houses the impressive art collection of Jim Thompson, an American expat famous for revitalizing the Thai silk industry in the 1950s and 1960s. The site also features traditional Thai-style houses surrounded by cool greeneries.

Bangkok mall  — You’d want to go here not only for shopping & air-conditioning, most shopping malls in the city also have large food courts that serve a variety of affordable Thai food. Top picks include Siam Paragon, Central World & Platinum Mall.

Wat Saket (Golden Mount temple), Giant Swing & Wat Suthat  — If the heat is bearable and you want to maximize your sightseeing in Bangkok, these are excellent places to explore near the Grand Palace and Khao San Road.

The Ayutthaya Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with ancient temple ruins & famous Buddha statues. It’s one of my favorite places to visit near Bangkok!

Travel time between Bangkok and Ayutthaya is around 1h30m to 2 hours. You can choose to go on a (1) DIY trip to Ayutthaya or (2) join a day tour from Bangkok. Both are excellent options. The better choice depends on whether you prefer to explore Ayutthaya on your own or going with a guided experience with hassle-free transport included.

This is the most popular day tour from Bangkok! Visit the floating markets if you want to see a more varied mix of scenery, aside from temples and city sights.

LEG 2:  CAMBODIA

Day 3:  thailand to cambodia, 0800 am: bangkok to siem reap bus.

The land journey from Bangkok to Siem Reap spans a bit over 400 kilometers. Travel time by bus is around 9 hours. It’ll eat up the better part of your day. To avoid time lost changing buses & potential scams at the book direct transfers that include the border crossing, with a reputable company.

Reputable bus companies include Giant Ibis, which offers pickup in Khao San Road, and Transport Co. (Nattakan), which departs from the Morchit (Mochit) / Northern Thailand Bus Station. You also have the option of booking from your hotel/hostel if you want to enjoy pickup directly from there. Or, book online to avoid fully-booked buses and guarantee a seat in your preferred bus schedule.

The bus fare is around USD 23-31 per person per way. Click below to see current prices, bus schedules & online booking.

It’s important to arrive at the pickup point 30 minutes to 1 hour before departure time. Carefully check the schedule, pick-up and drop-off areas.

Stay in Siem Reap central area, near Pub Street, at Siem Reap riverside or Charles De Gaulle boulevard.

0600 pm: Siem Reap at night

Day 4:  siem reap + angkor temples, 0500 am: start angkor temples tour.

The long land travel will be all worth it after you get to see Angkor Wat and other temple ruins in the Ancient City of Angkor. With a 1-day tour from Siem Reap, you can already see most of the major temples. Greet the sunrise at Angkor Wat and spend the whole day exploring other must-see sights in the ancient city including Ta Phrom, the “tomb raider” temple, Bayon and sunset on the top of Phnom Bakheng.

On a short visit, I recommend that you follow the standard “Little Circuit” route. It’s the most popular tour that includes the most impressive temples.

Angkor Wat entrance fee

One Day admission ticket  — USD 37 per person.

3-Day admission ticket  — USD 62 per person.

7-Day admission ticket  — USD 72 per person.

Join-in or private tour package  — Join-in tours are best suited for solo travelers who are looking to share the cost of transport/guide. The itinerary typically includes the 3 major temples: Angkor Wat, Bayon & Ta Phrohm. Click below to check join-in and private tour prices, discounts & itinerary schedule.

Private tuk-tuk / car charter  — If you are traveling in a group, you can hire your own tuk-tuk, private car or motodop (motorcycle taxi). Getting a transport charter is recommended if you want to maximize your sightseeing from sunrise to sundown.

Motorbike / bicycle rental  — Cost-effective option if you want to go on your own. Take note, the temples are spread across a large area. Going by push bicycle can be quite tiring and unbearably hot, especially if you are not conditioned to traveling long distances & the heat.

0530 am: Sunrise at Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat sunrise

Angkor Wat is located 7 kilometers away from Siem Reap city center. Travel time is around 20 minutes by car/tuk-tuk. To see the sunrise at Angkor Wat, I suggest that you depart from your hotel at 5 am or earlier.

0700 pm: Siem Reap at night

1030 pm: siem reap to phnom penh night bus.

The 460-kilometer land journey from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam takes around 13 hours. Although shuttles are faster, I recommend that you take the more comfortable bus.

Consider checking out of your hotel/hostel before going on your tour of Angkor to avoid being charged an extra night. Most places will let you keep your bag/luggage at the concierge for free, even after checking out.

15 Things to do in Vietnam + Tourist Spots

Your travel expenses will largely depend on your traveling style and how much you plan to spend on activities, accommodations & food. To help you set your own budget, here are budget estimates if you follow the 7 days and 6 nights (7D6N) itinerary posted above. Make sure to review all discounts & online booking prices.

I’ve included backpacker budget estimates for food & accommodations to give you an idea of how cheaply you can do the trip. As you know, actual budgets/expenses may be different depending on many factors including personal traveling styles, time of visit, etc. If you have money to splurge on hotels, food, and extra activities, simply use the expenses posted to calculate your estimated budget.

Can you travel cheaper?  The entrance fee + tour/transport to Angkor Wat alone takes up a huge chunk of the total budget. It’s expensive, yes. You can easily achieve a budget of less than USD 40 per day if you skip the attractions completely… DON’T! because they are really worth the price.

The most popular place to stay for budget travelers is Khao San Road area. It is an easy base to explore  Bangkok  & beyond because of many hostels, travel agencies & transport options that can be found here.

Want better views & comfort? Try the mid-range & luxury hotels on the Chao Phraya Riverside.

If you’re after the exciting shopping scene in  Bangkok , stay near the BTS/MRT train stations preferably in the area of Siam, Silom, Sukhumvit, or Hua Lamphong BTS station. A big advantage of staying nearby is fast access to Suvarnabhumi Airport (via the airport express), and major transport hubs like Morchit (Mochit)-Northern  Thailand  Bus Station & Hua Lamphong Railway Station.

Indochina Travel Tips Before You Go

Do i need a visa, how to cross the border between thailand-cambodia-vietnam, what bus company to go with, where to book bus tickets online, useful travel apps & websites for indochina, how to get mobile internet, how to get money/cash, how to book cheap flights to indochina, should i book my indochina hotel online, pre-book your indochina tours & attraction tickets online.

Filipinos (Philippine passport holders) do not need to apply for a tourist visa before arriving in all three countries featured on this itinerary.

Pinoy travelers can enjoy Visa-free travel in Thailand for stays of 30 days or less. There’s a maximum of 2 visits annually if arriving by land. Don’t worry because you’ll only be crossing once.

For Cambodia and Vietnam, the maximum stay is 21 days.

If anyone tells you that you need to pay anything when crossing the border, insist that Filipinos are not required to apply for a tourist visa and refuse their offer. Walk straight to the official immigration booths at the checkpoint. Before leaving, carefully check the new stamp on your passport & make sure that the validity date indicated is past your last day in the country.

Go with a reputable bus company, which will provide a representative that will guide you through the border crossing process.

Upon reaching the border, in Thailand, for example, you will need to clear the Thailand immigration checkpoint and get the exit stamp on your passport.

Then, get off the bus and walk to the Cambodia side of the border. Do not leave important things on the bus. Also, take a picture of the bus no./plate no. and ask the bus driver/representative if it’s the same bus that will take you to Siem Reap. If yes, it’s okay to leave your big luggage. Just bring your valuables with you.

At the Cambodia side, line up for the immigration checkpoint, get an entry stamp and look for the onward bus to Siem Reap.

Expect the same procedure when crossing between Cambodia and Vietnam.

The process above only applies to “direct” buses.

Giant Ibis is quite reliable. They offer direct bus transfers between Bangkok, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh & Ho Chi Minh. The bus fare is a couple of dollars more expensive than competitors, but you’re assured of a safe and comfortable ride. This will be especially appreciated during the border crossings where scams are commonplace.

Transport Co. (Nattakan) is also a good option for the Bangkok-Siem Reap route.

Go with Capitol Tours or Mekong Express for bus travel between Cambodia and Ho Chi Minh.

There are also cheaper buses (not as well maintained as the options above) and shuttles (faster but less leg room/comfort). You can book these directly with your hotel/hostel. Upside is that they typically provide free hotel pick-up. Downside is that you won’t be sure of the quality of the bus company.

Pick a booking site below that offers the best rates, schedule & comfort. Buy your tickets ahead to avoid fully-booked seats.

Google Maps  — Remember to download the offline maps before you go to access the map even if you don’t have mobile data.

Use the directions feature if you plan to get around Indochina on your own. I love this feature because I often like to wander around places that I visit & see the sights on foot. The directions on Google Maps is also super useful because it displays train & bus routes in Indochina. It only works online, so you will need internet access.

Maps.me  — Excellent Google Maps alternative that automatically saves offline maps.

Grab  — I use this reliable ride-hailing app frequently as an alternative to taking the taxi. To see the fare estimates, click below to install the app on your phone & manually set the location to in Indochina. Take note of the prices displayed for your pre-trip budget plan.

XE Currency  — Free & easy currency converter.

Google Translate  — Very useful when communicating with locals who do not understand/speak English.

Agoda  &  Booking.com  — My go-to for convenient hotel bookings & cheap rates. For home/apartment rentals, check listings on Airbnb .

Skyscanner  &  Momondo  — These top flight search apps make it super easy to compare airfares from multiple airlines. Download the app & sign-up to the price alerts for updates on cheap flights.

TripAdvisor  — Great for restaurant reviews & recommendations. One of the features that I use often is the “cheap eats” filter & the map view.

Bring cash in US Dollars (USD) for the whole trip. Or, major currencies like Euros or British Pounds. Don’t exchange a lot at the airport because rates are the city center are usually better.

To avoid bringing large amounts of cash or worry about exchange rates, book your accommodations, tours, & tickets online.

The Philippine Peso has terrible exchange rates in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. I suggest that you bring cash in USD (or any major currency). Or simply withdraw local currency from an ATM. Before you go, make your ATM card (with Visa / Mastercard / Cirrus logo) is cleared for international withdrawal.

Here are the local currencies for your reference:

Thailand —  Thai Baht  (THB / ฿)

Cambodia —  US Dollar  is the unofficial second currency. It’s accepted almost everywhere in the country & the exchange rate you will get is quite fair. Officially it’s Cambodia Riel (KHR / ៛) but you don’t need to worry about exchanging money to riel.

Vietnam —  Vietnamese Dong  (VND / ₫)

If you are flying to within the next 2-3 months, the general rule to spend less on flights is by booking sooner rather than later. In case you are booking well ahead of your trip, keep a lookout for airline promo fares & seat sales.

5 Days Indochina Itinerary

Yes, 5 days in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam is doable. The trip will be rushed & exhausting especially if you’re not used to fast-paced travel. I’ve met many travelers who have done & enjoyed a trip regardless. The five day Indochina itinerary is quite popular among travelers who want to maximize their long weekend vacation leave. You can still use the 1 week itinerary above as a general guide. Simply, take out the full-day excursions beyond Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh. Here’s a summary of the 5 day itinerary covering Bangkok, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Vietnam:

2 Weeks Indochina Itinerary

If you have two weeks, one month or more, here are more places you can include in your itinerary:

Vietnam  — Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, Mui Ne, Dalat, Nha Trang

Cambodia  — Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville

Thailand  — Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phuket, Ko Samui/Ko Tao/Ko Phangan

Hi! Your blog’s very helpful for our itinerary.. can i ask if what did you do with your things while on day tour at Phnom Penh?

September 4, 2017 at 11:22 pm

I’ve posted the suggestions on the “Show more” buttons. For a short tour of Phnom Penh, check out:

Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda Cambodia National Museum Central Market

These three are located along Phnom Penh riverside, near most bus terminals

December 25, 2017 at 9:29 pm

Good day sir, may I ask if is this the same process if my trip start from Vietnam to Cambodia to Thailand?

December 26, 2017 at 1:13 am

Yes, it’s the same.

Just keep this in mind: When you’re crossing by land to Thailand, the Thai immigration has a policy that you must present a minimum of THB 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 per family at the border. This “show money” can be in cash & in any popular currency. If the immigration offer tells you that your cash must be in THB, insist that their website states the money can be in any “equivalent” currency. You can check this page for more info.

Hi! Should I bring USD or would it be better to withdraw from the ATM? I’ll be in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia for 12 days.

March 12, 2018 at 4:20 pm

I find it easier to withdraw from ATMs when I travel, but I usually bring USD in case of emergency.

hello Marcos, me and my boyfriend is planning for our first ever international tour together. this will be a big help for us to visit this 3countries in our 2nd anniv. I just want to ask if we could have a city tour when we arrive there?

April 12, 2018 at 10:02 am

If i go by bus, if i happened to run out of usd, can i withraw from my debit card before i show them my money? Do they have atm’s there?

April 12, 2018 at 10:51 am

I’m not sure if there are ATMs at the border (though you’re likely to find one nearby). I recommend that you already have money in hand at the border. If you are on a direct bus/shuttle transfer, you might inconvenience the other passengers if you go looking for ATMs.

April 13, 2018 at 12:47 am

All of the above :)

Is it possible to extend our trip by ending at Malaysia via bus from Vietnam?

April 13, 2018 at 2:35 pm

All of the above :) hihi

is this possible? Thailand-Cambodia-Vietnam-Malaysia?

April 17, 2018 at 5:54 pm

Hi Mary, if you’re going to travel from Vietnam all the way to Malaysia BY LAND, you will need to pass through Cambodia and Thailand (again).

I HIGHLY suggest that you fly from Ho Chi Minh to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Flying will be cheaper and much much much faster. It will probably take you at least two days to go from Ho Chi Minh to Kuala Lumpur by bus.

If you really want to go by land. You should start from Vietnam, pass through Cambodia, then Thailand. Finally, travel south to Malaysia.

Good day. Do you think there will be a problem for transgender people for this tour?

July 15, 2018 at 5:59 pm

I believe it won’t be a problem. In Thailand, for example, local transgender people are popularly called “Lady Boys.” Transgender people are generally accepted/norm in Thai society.

Hi! i booked from PH to Cambodia then return flight is from Cambodia to PH, plano ko sana magpunta din ng Thailand, is that possible? Makakabalik pa ba ko ng Cambodia ?

July 29, 2018 at 1:59 am

Yes, you can travel from Cambodia to Thailand and back to Cambodia. Depends on how long your trip is. If it’s 3 days, I suggest you just stick to Cambodia. 5 days, possible but half of your trip will be spent on the bus rides, which I don’t recommend. 7 days or more is doable. Kindly read the guide for travel time details.

July 26, 2018 at 1:24 pm

Hi. I read your indochina article and was wondering if it’s not scary to travel from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh during night. Also, the bus from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Min, will it automatically stop at the border for the immigration process? And my ate and I are both Philippine passport holders, what should we bring at the Cam – Viet border? Thanks!

July 29, 2018 at 1:54 am

Hey Aira, nothing specifically dangerous traveling that bus route at night. Go with a reputable company like Giant Ibis to be safe. As always, take general precautions when you travel anywhere. If you buy a bus ticket with pickup in PP & drop off in HCMC, yes, the bus will stop at the border. Then, the driver to someone will let you finish clearing the immigration. At the other side, you take the same bus company to HCMC.

I’ve already posted tips on bus companies and where to book. Kindly review the guide above. You can also check these guides: https://www.detourista.com/guide/ho-chi-minh-trip/ https://www.detourista.com/guide/siem-reap-trip/

December 31, 2018 at 7:47 pm

Hello. I would like to ask regarding money when I entered tri-city. Is it a need to bring USD and exchange to local currency everytime Ill be in the different country?

December 31, 2018 at 8:35 pm

Not necessarily USD (any major currency will do), but yes you’ll need money in the local currency… with the exception of Cambodia, since USD is widely accepted there. I usually withdraw local money from an ATM. If you’re not spending a lot in each country, however, and want to avoid bank withdrawal fees, it might be more cost-effective to just bring USD bills (or any major currency) and go to a money changer.

Hi! I was wodering, how did you do the Siem Reap + Angkor temples? I mean, did you negotiate a tuktuk ride downtown at 5:00am then explore temples by foot? And where do you get an entrance fee? I am doing an itinerary for next year trip and I’m confused to whether book at Klook for a tuktuk ride or not because it seems that the tuktuk tour of Klook starts at 8am and does not match yours. I want to follow your itinerary; sunrise at Angkor Wat and sunset at Phnom Bakheng. Your blog is helpful, btw! Thanks!

Hi! how did you acquire sim cards for the 3 countries? I know from thailand i can probably pick up something from the airport when I arrive. And in vietnam I know it can be delivered to our hotel and just pick it up when we check in. But how about in cambodia?

April 27, 2020 at 12:44 am

SIM cards are also available at the airport and city center shops once you arrive in Siem Reap. Just research ahead on how to get to your hotel/hostel. The staff should know a good place to buy nearby.

Deluxe rooms feature 20sqm of floor space, which extends out onto a 5sqm balcony, and an Italian marble bathroom with both a walk-in shower and a Jacuzzi. The four larger suites feature 1930s inspired Indochina décor and plush king-sized beds with a massive 38sqm of space on the upper deck.

Limestone outcrops blanketed in lush vegetation rise up from the still, jade-coloured water. Your boat glides smoothly across the glassy surface, the shapes and shadows of the islets changing as you navigate this watery paradise. This is Lan Ha Bay, the smaller, quieter and altogether more serene neighbour of Halong Bay.

Although belonging to a different province, Lan Ha is essentially an extension of Halong Bay and offers the same mesmerising scenery. Lying south-east of Cat Ba Island, fewer boats make their way to Lan Ha meaning you'll get to enjoy this idyllic setting without the busy crowds.

As you weave your way through the islands, you'll come across secluded bays, white sandy beaches and floating villages. There are caves to explore, islands to cycle on, and the pristine waters are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking.

Your luxury junk boat will be your home away from home as you explore Lan Ha Bay, and there are few experiences as magical as watching the sunrise from the comfort of your cabin, then watching it sink behind the sparkling water as the day draws to a close.

One of the bars sits alongside the scenic 50m infinity pool but our favourite is the cigar and cocktail lounge, housed within a reconstructed century-old farmhouse that has shelves bursting with vintage liqueurs, gin and whisky, surely one of the coolest bars in Southeast  Asia .

End a day of temple exploration at the spa, an ancient looking temple offering age-old healing techniques and beauty recipes using indigenous ingredients.

Aside from temples, Phum Baitang offers a range of activities, including a kids’ club, private dining experiences and cooking classes, cultural excursions, trips to Tonle Sap and vintage jeep drives..

During your time in Siem Reap we can arrange privately guided specialist tours to show you the best of the city, Angkor Wat and the Khmer temples in the region.

Travel by road to Srah Srang and then continue to Ta Prohm, pausing to collect your entry passes at the Archaeological Park Entrance. Take your time to walk through the temple from the West entrance to the East entrance where you will rejoin our driver. From the Northwest of Ta Prohm, walk 15 minutes through the forest to the seldom visited temple of Ta Nei. There is a reasonable chance of having this beautiful Angkor temple all to yourself. Pause for a light breakfast around this peaceful area before exploring further. End the morning at Ta Keo temple, known as the 'mountain with bronze peaks', and admire its five-tiered pyramid structure.

Travel by road to the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom. You have the choice of either walking along the path along the city wall to the Death Gate or continuing around by road. En route to the Terrace of the Leper King, you'll stop briefly to see an imposing statue found in Bayon which is now displayed at Vihear Prampeilveng. Begin again at the atmospheric Preah Palilay and walk through the shaded parkland behind the terraces, past Phimeanakas with its beautiful lakes, and the imposing Baphuon to finally reach Jayavarman’s state temple of Bayon at the centre of the city. Explore this important temple with its many captivating giant stone faces. Your guide will point out the most interesting of the detailed bas reliefs illustrating everyday life in the Angkorian era.

Enjoy sunset drinks at Angkor Thom whilst sailing on the complex's vast moat.

Visit Angkor Wat, one of the modern wonders of the world, and watch the sun rise behind this ornate temple. Be amazed by the sheer size of the temple and learn how the Khmer Empire prospered between the 9th and 13th centuries, around the time when Angkor Wat was built. Stroll through the intricately carved hallways that show hundreds of fine carvings and discover small shrines still in use today by the local people.

Explore Siem Reap's rural landscape beyond its temples, which has changed little since the days of Jayavarman VII. After a short drive from Siem Reap, visit a colourful contemporary pagoda to understand more of the importance of Buddhism in these rural communities and seek a blessing from the monks. Buy seasonal fruits straight from the tree, speak to families who have been baking sticky rice in bamboo for over 30 years and gain hands-on experience of the essential rural skills of the rice harvest, thatching, fishing, or even making a simple meal over an open fire.

Then, take an ox-cart ride through typical villages followed by an easy 20-minute walk to bring you to the vast Western Baray. An impressive engineering feat, this man-made reservoir was once integral to the complex Angkorian rice irrigation system which you will voyage by boat (depending on water level). This will be both an education and an adventure from a slower, more romantic era of travel. Then reach the villa, surrounded by rice paddies, across a stream to the north of a village where tourists are rarely seen and the greetings for visitors are warm and generous. This is a wonderful spot to relax in the quiet of the countryside and enjoy sunset drinks. While the chef prepares your dinner, wander across the levees of the rice paddies, look for fish traps, or walk a short distance to a viewpoint over the ancient reservoir, whilst listening to the elegance of traditional Khmer music played by local musicians, before enjoying your evening meal.

On the walk through the forest to the falls, you will also pass the Free the Bears project – home to a group of rescued Asiatic Black (Moon) Bears and one Malayan Sun Bear. Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
