The 1990s had a lot of great things: the beginning of Friends , unbelievably stylish ensembles, and the birth of iconic “It” couple Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. They were everywhere, and everyone wanted to know every detail about the shocking couple. Cruise was already one of Hollywood’s elites when they tied the knot in 1990, but everyone wanted to know, who was this gorgeous Australian actress who stole his heart ?
They met on the set of the hit film Days of Thunder and tied the knot a year later on Christmas Eve in 1990. Before Kidman became the superstar she is today , she told Marie Claire per Goalcast that she felt like a trophy at the beginning of their marriage. “I thought, I don’t deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars, and I would think, I’m here to support [Tom]. I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard.”
Then came kids, more films, and a lot of red carpet-appearances. They would frequently say how much they loved one another in interviews, with Cruise calling Kidman his “soulmate.”
They were the faces of ’90s love, and their sudden divorce in 2001 shocked everyone, along with Kidman being the reported reason Cruise skipped the 2023 Oscars over 20 years later.
So let’s throw it back to the 1990s and take a look at Kidman and Cruise’s life in photos.

Or I’m not willing to.”

Despite Cruise’s film Top Gun: Maverick receiving multiple nominations, he reportedly skipped the whole ceremony because he didn’t want to have a run-in with Kidman.
Still a Family
Kidman’s relationship with her oldest children, who reportedly lived primarily with Cruise after their divorce, has been a subject of debate. In recent years Bella has proven she’s on good terms with her mom by interacting with her on social media and defending her in interviews.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman: The Way They Were
A true ’90s power couple. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman ‘s romance didn’t last, but their relationship remains a subject of fascination for movie fans around the world.
The Oscar winner and the Mission: Impossible actor met in early 1990 while filming Tony Scott ‘s Days of Thunder , in which Cruise played race car driver Cole Trickle and Kidman appeared as his love interest, Dr. Claire Lewicki. Some critics thought the film was too similar to 1986’s Top Gun , which also starred Cruise under the direction of Scott, but the romance developing between its two young stars quickly eclipsed any negative press.
Less than one year after finalizing his divorce from Mimi Rogers , Cruise married Kidman in December 1990 during a private ceremony held on Christmas Eve. The low-key event was attended by their family members and held in Telluride, Colorado.
“I was so young when I got married,” Kidman told Red magazine in 2016, reflecting on her marriage to Cruise. The Moulin Rouge! actress was 23 at the time, while the Top Gun: Maverick producer was 28. “I look back now and I’m like, ‘What?'”
Shortly after their wedding, the couple worked together again on Ron Howard ‘s drama Far and Away , which hit theaters in 1992. That same year, the duo adopted daughter Isabella shortly after her birth. In 1995, they adopted son Connor, who later starred in the films Seven Pounds and Red Dawn .
Cruise and Kidman collaborated for a third time on Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut , which premiered in 1999. “We were happily married through that,” the Hours actress told The New York Times in 2020, reflecting on where she stood with Cruise while making the controversial movie. “We would go go-kart racing after [intense] scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at three in the morning.”
Less than two years after the movie’s release, however, the couple announced their separation. “Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seemed best for both of them at this time,” a rep for the duo said in a February 2001 statement.
The Jerry Maguire actor later moved on with Penélope Cruz before marrying Katie Holmes in 2006. Cruise and the Dawson’s Creek alum, who share daughter Suri (born in 2006), split in 2012.
Kidman, for her part, was briefly engaged to Lenny Kravitz in 2003. In June 2006, she wed country star Keith Urban , with whom she shares daughters Sunday Rose (born in 2008) and Faith (born in 2010).

Despite the end of her relationship with Cruise, Kidman has said she’s not bothered by the perpetual interest in their romance.
“I was young. I think I offered it up?” the Big Little Lies alum told Harper’s Bazaar in September 2021 when asked whether the continued fascination bothers her. “Maybe I’ve gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I’m always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way.”

Cruise filed for divorce from Kidman, citing irreconcilable differences for the split. Former Scientologist Mike Rinder claimed in 2022 that the church played a role in the couple's breakup by creating a "distance" between them. The apostate also alleged that the Church of Scientology wiretapped Kidman's phone to monitor her influence on Cruise, who is one of the religion's most prominent members.
The church denied Rinder's claims in a September 2022 statement, saying: "The Church never ordered or participated in any illegal wiretapping. Mike Rinder is an inveterate liar who seeks to profit from his dishonesty. He supports himself by orchestrating the harassment of his former Church and its leader through false police reports, incendiary propaganda and fraudulent media stories.”

Kidman clarified that she did not have a miscarriage early in her marriage to Cruise, but rather had one early in their relationship. "It was wrongly reported," she told Marie Claire , explaining that she'd had an ectopic pregnancy when she was 23. "So it's huge news, and it didn't happen. I had a miscarriage at the end of my marriage, but I had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of my marriage. It was incredibly traumatic for me. Sometimes you share your grief."

The Aquaman actress opened up about her miscarriage she experienced during her relationship with Cruise in an interview with Tatler . “I know the yearning. That yearning. It’s a huge, aching yearning," she told the outlet. "And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough. That’s massive grief to certain women."

Nicole Kidman Made a Rare Comment About Her Marriage to Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman gave a super rare insight into her marriage to Tom Cruise in a new interview with the New York Times Magazine.
- Nicole Kidman spoke about her marriage to Tom Cruise in a new interview with the New York Times Magazine.
- Kidman reflected on the experience of filming Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut with her then husband.

It's incredibly rare for Nicole Kidman to speak about her marriage to Tom Cruise , which lasted from 1990 to 2001. But in a new interview with the New York Times Magazine , Kidman opened up about a specific period in their relationship, when the couple were shooting the 1999 Stanley Kubrick movie Eyes Wide Shut .
First, Kidman dismissed the "fallacy" that she and Cruise had a difficult time working on the movie, which took far longer to shoot than expected. "We loved working with him. We shot that for two years. We had two kids and were living in a trailer on the lot primarily, making spaghetti because Stanley liked to eat with us sometimes. We were working with the greatest filmmaker and learning about our lives and enjoying our lives on set," she said.
"We would say, “When is it going to end?” We went over there thinking it was going to be three months. It turned into a year, a year and a half," Kidman continued. "But you go, As long as I surrender to what this is, I’m going to have an incredible time. Stanley, he wasn’t torturous. He was arduous in that he would shoot a lot. But I’d sit on the floor of his office and talk, and we’d watch animal videos."
Kidman went on to reject the suggestion that the movie, with its recurrent theme of infidelity, put a strain on her relationship with Cruise. "That fits the narrative that people came up with, but I definitely didn’t see it like that. We were happily married through that," she said. "We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to." Interesting!

Nicole Kidman Got Asked About Her Marriage To Tom Cruise And It Didn't Go Well
Senior Reporter, HuffPost
Aside from the photos of Nicole Kidman jumping for joy after finalizing her divorce from Tom Cruise popping up every so often, the one-time power couple has largely faded from our collective pop culture memory.
Both stars tend to keep their eyes mouths wide shut when it comes to their marriage, so perhaps that’s why Kidman was caught off guard by a question about Cruise in an interview with The Guardian published on Sunday.
Reflecting on her role as Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin’s “Being The Ricardos” — a look at the comedy icon’s romance with Desi Arnaz — the Oscar-winner explained how the project takes a different approach to depicting love.
“It’s about a creative and romantic relationship that doesn’t work out,” she said. “But from it come some extraordinary things. And I love that. I love that it’s not a happy ending.”
“This film says you can make an extraordinary relationship thrive and leave remnants of it that exist forever. Yeah, that’s really gorgeous,” she continued. “You can’t make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with. And I think that’s all very relatable. You may have kids with them. You may not, but they were very much in love.”
The response prompted reporter Eva Wiseman to ask, with what she described as “exquisite care,” whether Kidman was referring on some level to her marriage to Cruise.
Wiseman noted that Kidman “[choked], just a little” and became “angry” before fully shutting down the line of inquiry.
“Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No. I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no,” Kidman said. “And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist, because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right.’”
Kidman and Cruise fell in love after co-starring in 1990’s “Days of Thunder” and got married that year. They adopted two children together and later split after 11 years of marriage amid rumors that Cruise’s devotion to Scientology drove a wedge between them.
In 2006, Kidman tied the knot with singer Keith Urban, with whom she now has two daughters. Cruise, meanwhile, married Katie Holmes in 2006. They also later divorced.
Elsewhere in the Guardian interview, Kidman dodged a question about raising her daughters with Urban, saying, “No, I have to really protect them. I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut.”
Kidman has remained tight-lipped about her relationship with Cruise and their two children, Isabella and Connor, who, like their father, are reportedly practicing Scientologists.
But she back in 2018, she did comment on why she prefers not to discuss the marriage publicly and how Cruise’s star power protected her from sexual harassment early on in her career.
“Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about, because I’m married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful,” Kidman wrote in an essay for New York magazine. “That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me ― it was protection.”
Earlier this year, she reflected on the intense media scrutiny that surrounded her relationship with Cruise, explaining that she’s become a “bit more trepidatious” about sharing personal details with the press.
“I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in September. “My husband, Keith, says that when he met me, he said, ‘How’s your heart?’ And I apparently responded, ‘Open.’”

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s Relationship Timeline: From Meeting On Set to Divorce
For roughly a decade, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were Hollywood’s “it” couple. Having met on the set of Days of Thunder in 1990, the two would go on to wed soon after but would later divorce a little more than a decade later. But following their onset chemistry, the two were quickly in the honeymoon phase of their relationship.
“He basically swept me off my feet,” Nicole told Vanity Fair in 2002 of their romance that quickly began after working together, while Tom admitted to the same publication in 1994 that meeting her “was that special connection when you recognize your soul mate.”
“I fell madly, passionately in love,” Nicole added. “And as happens when you fall in love, my whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my life — I was like, ‘Forget it. This is it.’ I was consumed by it, willingly. And I was desperate to have a baby with him. I didn’t care if we were married.”
Well, despite that, Tom and Nicole were married on Christmas Eve in 1990. They would go on to share two children: Isabella (Bella) Cruise , who was born in 1992, and Connor Cruise , born in 1995.
“Seeing Nicole with Isabella, I see a whole other side to her,” Tom told Vanity Fair of Nicole as a mother in his 1994 interview. “Sometimes, I just stand back and watch. Or I’ll walk up the stairs and just stand there and listen to them play. Sometimes, Nic will forget to turn that little baby-speaker thing off, and I’ll just sit there and listen to them. Those are the little moments in life when you stop and think, ‘I want to make sure I’ll remember this forever.’”
Days of Thunder wasn’t the only set on which the two worked together. The then-pair later teamed up to star in late director Stanley Kubrick’s erotic thriller and his final film Eyes Wide Shut , with filming beginning in 1996.
Despite portraying a couple experiencing marital issues on a production that lasted for a record-breaking 15 months, Nicole said that the two were still as happy as ever during the filming process.
Discussing their marriage in 2020 with The New York Times Magazine , Nicole said that during the filming of Eyes Wide Shut , they “were happily married through that. We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at three in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”
Eventually, in 2001, the pair split, and Tom filed for divorce. Nicole told Vanity Fair in 2002, “My life collapsed. People ran from me because suddenly it was ‘Oh, my God! It’s over for her now!’”
She added that she thought “had to choose” between work and family.
Deal of the Day
“I think [the marriage] would have come down to it,” she added. “I suppose it wasn’t meant to be. What I see now is a 9-year-old little girl who [the divorce] affected, and I see a 7-year-old boy and see my duty as a mother. It means for the rest of my life I have to do things to protect and help them and make it up to them. That sounds so old-fashioned and strange. I don’t know why that’s in me, but it is.”
Nicole later remarried and wed country singer Keith Urban in 2006 . Tom went on to marry Katie Holmes before the pair split in 2012.

Meeting in 1990
“She is a person who understands,” Tom told Vanity Fair in 1994 of meeting and starting a romance with Nicole on the set of Days of Thunder . “It was as if a whole new life had started for me.”

Welcoming Children
Tom and Nicole’s adopted children, Bella and Connor, were welcomed into the family in 1992 and 1995, respectively. “Bella lives just outside London. You know, she really feels more English,” Nicole told Vanity Fair in 2019 about what her daughter is up to now, adding that Connor lives in Florida and works in the music industry.
Becoming Very Famous, Very Young
“I became famous very young. I became very famous because I was the wife of somebody,” Nicole told Easy Living Magazine in 2009, according to Marie Claire . “I felt I became a star only by association. I didn’t think (my early movies) were very good, which is why I would always cower in the background. I thought, I don’t deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars and I would think, I’m here to support him. I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard.”

Filming ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, 1996 to 1998
“We loved working with [director Stanley Kubrick],” Nicole told The New York Times Magazine in 2020 of the experience of filming Eyes Wide Shut from November 1996 through early 1999. “We shot that for two years. We had two kids and were living in a trailer on the lot primarily, making spaghetti because Stanley liked to eat with us sometimes.”

Split in 2001
“Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers which constantly kept them apart,” Nicole and Tom’s then-spokesperson Pat Kingsley told People in a statement at the time, adding “they concluded that an amicable separation seemed best for both of them at this time.” Nicole would later tell Ladies’ Home Journal that the split came as a “major shock.”

"Maybe I've gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I'm always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way," Kidman continued before a moment of silence. "I'm wary at times, and I've been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach."
Referencing her current husband, country singer Keith Urban, the "Nine Perfect Strangers" star added, "My husband, Keith, says that when he met me, he said, 'How's your heart?' And I apparently responded, 'Open.'"

How Many Films Did Tom Cruise And Nicole Kidman Star In Together?
When we talk about the '90s power couples, there are a few that have stuck in our minds through the decades. Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman , Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow, Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford, and of course, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. These iconic couples had people invested in their relationships from the moment they were spotted arm-in-arm on a red carpet all the way to the second news of their breakups broke.
Kidman and Cruise, in particular, caused a great stir when their marriage ended. Everybody remembers the striking image of Kidman as she strolled the streets in apparent glee as the divorce was finalized. Later, the "Big Little Lies" star opened up about the relationship saying, "Our life together was perfect. It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system," she added, "That was a great relationship. I think it ran its course. I was really damaged and not sure whether [love and marriage] was ever going to happen again to me," via InTouch Weekly .
But as we all know, it all worked out in the end. Kidman found love in singer Keith Urban while Cruise went on to marry Katie Holmes and have a child with her before splitting up after six years of matrimony. And while Cruise and Kidman's marriage didn't last, it's safe to say their contributions to cinema will stand the test of time, especially in the movies they did together.
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise starred in three movies together
Unsurprisingly, the two Hollywood stars' paths first crossed on the set of the film, "Days of Thunder." In a 2017 interview with People , Nicole Kidman fondly reminisced about the first time she saw Tom Cruise during an audition for her role in the film, "I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche [. . .] and he got out of the car and walked through, and I was like 'Ah!' and my jaw dropped." She also added that she was intimidated auditioning in front of the movie's executives and Cruise and believed she wouldn't get the part. But she was called and offered the role on the very same day.
Although Kidman had previously gained notoriety from working in the Australian thriller, "Dead Calm," and several other Australian films, she broke through the American film scene with "Days of Thunder." At the time of filming, Kidman was 22, while Cruise was 28 and in the process of getting a divorce from his first wife, Mimi Rogers. In a 1995 interview with Playboy , Rogers would share that the marriage primarily ended due to Cruise's desire to become a monk, which didn't happen. Months before the film's release in 1990, the divorce was finalized and Kidman and Cruise went public shortly after. The actors wed in a private ceremony on Christmas Eve that same year.
Eyes Wide Shut was one of their most notable projects
In 1992, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise appeared in their first film as a married couple, "Far and Away." And while the film did relatively well, their big break as an iconic Hollywood couple would happen in 1999 with Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut." The official trailer for the film featured several explicit scenes, including some steamy kisses shared between the real-life couple.
Unsurprisingly, the couple's chemistry sizzled in the erotic mystery. In 1995, the couple admitted to Vanity Fair that their initial attraction was sexual. Kidman gushed, "I thought he was the sexiest man I'd ever seen in my life." And Cruise also said something similar, "Instant lust, that's what I felt," he added, "I thought she was amazingly sexy and stunning. It grew into love and respect."
Due to the themes of infidelity in the movie and their striking performances, many believed that Kidman and Cruise were tapping into real-life emotions. But Kidman denied these rumors in a 2020 interview with The New York Times , "We were happily married through that," she added, "We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We'd rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning." Sadly, the couple's divorce was finalized in 2001 after 11 years of marriage. Although the pair has been vague about what went down behind the scenes, many have speculated that this might be why they really got divorced .

At one point in time, Kidman, 53, and the “Top Gun” star, 58, were among Hollywood’s A-list couples -- and now she's opening up about their relationship while they filmed “Eyes Wide Shut” in 1999. The pair play a married couple mired by infidelity in the film.
Kidman told the New York Times -- in an interview published on Monday -- that she and Cruise were “ happily married ” when asked if she had harbored any “negative feelings” about their marriage during that time.
"We would go go-kart racing after those scenes,’’ recalled Kidman. “We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to."

NICOLE KIDMAN OPENS UP ABOUT ADOPTED KIDS WITH EX TOM CRUISE
Kidman told the Times that she always aimed to keep the kids’ lives private. A source told People magazine in July 2018 that Cruise “loves all his children. And each of them has a right to their own story.”
Later that year, in November 2018, Kidman told Australia’s WHO magazine , “I’m very private about all that.”
“They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and, as a mother, it’s my job to love them,” she explained. “And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here."

Added the "Big Little Lies" star: "I think that’s so important because if that is taken away from a child, to sever that in any child, in any relationship, in any family — I believe it’s wrong. So that’s our job as a parent, to always offer unconditional love.”
“I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150% that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is,” she said.

Nicole Kidman shuts down 'sexist' question about marriage to Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman is still being asked questions about ex-husband Tom Cruise 20 years after their marriage ended, which she feels would not happen to a man in a similar position.
The Oscar winner was describing the marriage between television legends Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz depicted in her latest film, " Being the Ricardos, " when she was asked in an interview with The Guardian whether that description was her way of talking about her relationship with Cruise, 59, whom she divorced in 2001.
“Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not," she replied. "No. I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no.”
Kidman, 54, was clearly irked by the question.
“And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either," she said. "It feels to me almost sexist, because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right.’”
The question about Cruise came after Kidman, who plays Ball in "Being the Ricardos," spoke about the relationship between Ball and Arnaz that produced “I Love Lucy,” often considered an all-time classic television show. Ball and Arnaz's marriage ended in divorce in 1960, three years after "I Love Lucy" ended.
Cruise and Kidman also worked together during their relationship and marriage, starring in "Days of Thunder," "Far and Away," and Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut."
“It’s about a creative and romantic relationship that doesn’t work out," Kidman said about her new film. "But from it come some extraordinary things. And I love that. I love that it’s not a happy ending.
"This film says you can make an extraordinary relationship thrive and leave remnants of it that exist forever," she continued. "Yeah, that’s really gorgeous. You can’t make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with. And I think that’s all very relatable. You may have kids with them. You may not, but they were very much in love.”
Kidman, who adopted two children with Cruise during their 11-year marriage, has been married to country music star Keith Urban for 15 years and has two children with him.
She was also bothered by persistent questions about her fame.
“Why are you so interested in the famous thing?” she said. "I don’t live that life. I’m deeply embedded in a family, in a very deep marriage. I’m parenting children. I’m a daughter. Those are the primary things. And yes, I have other things that circulate. But at my base are relationships that are very, to use your word, ‘real'."
Kidman also opened up about briefly retiring from acting in her early 40s after having her first child with Urban.
“Until my mum said to me, ‘I don’t think you should just give up,’” she said. “I was quite convinced I could grow vegetables and be at home and be very satisfied with that, but was pushed quite substantially by my mum. Friends, too — I have friendships that have permeated my life.”

The 28-year-old son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman took to his Instagram Stories over the weekend to share a rare photo of himself at the Belleair Country Club in Florida.
In the shot, Connor poses in a blue checkered polo shirt, shades, and a hat and flashes a peace sign while posing for the selfie alongside two friends.

Kidman, 55, and Cruise, 60, were married in 1990 before splitting in 2001.
While public appearances from the 28-year-old are few and far between , Connor has been photographed alongside his famous father on multiple occasions over the years, including an appearance at a 2021 October Los Angeles Dodgers game in San Francisco. The pair were photographed sitting side-by-side in the stands as Cruise took photos with fans.
Cruise and Connor were also photographed together in October 2019 in London before boarding a private helicopter.
In addition to Connor and Bella, Cruise shares 17-year-old daughter Suri with his ex-wife, Katie Holmes. Kidman, meanwhile, is also mom to daughters Sunday, 14, and Faith, 12, with husband, Keith Urban.

Tom Cruise Once Told Fans To 'Get A Life' After Vanity Fair Asked About His Divorce From Nicole Kidman
- Tom Cruise once told fans obsessed with his divorce from Nicole Kidman to "get a life".
- Cruise remained respectful towards Kidman, stating she knows why their marriage ended.
- Nicole Kidman was offended when asked about her ex-husband Tom Cruise in an interview.
During Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage, the duo was the biggest power couple. Since Cruise has headlined many movies that made a fortune and Kidman is a blockbuster veteran , it makes sense that they were such a big deal.
In Cruise's case, part of the reason he is so successful is how careful he is about his image. After all, Cruise has strict rules about how he looks in public and he makes sure everyone knows about his most dangerous stunts . However, Cruise once let his frustrations get the best of him when he told people who obsessed over his divorce from Kidman to "get a life".
This article will reveal why Tom Cruise told people who ask him about Nicole Kidman to "get a life" . Following that, the article will reveal the question about Cruise that outraged Kidman .
Tom Cruise Told Fans Obsessed With His Divorce To "Get A Life"
In January 2002, Tom Cruise was profiled by Vanity Fair. While this was far from the first time Cruise had been the subject of an article like that, this piece is noteworthy due to its timing. A little less than a year earlier, Cruise filed for divorce from Nicole Kidman. Due to the timing of that event, Cruise was asked about his divorce and he told obsessed fans to mind their own business .
“I don’t care if it piques people’s interest. Honestly, people should mind their own damn business. And get a life of their own . . . . My personal life isn’t here to sell newspapers.”
Before Cruise got to the point where he seemed to vent his frustrations, Vanity Fair's interviewer Evgenia Peretz asked him a very personal question. "Why did you and Nicole decide to end it?"
When Vanity Fair's profile was published, that was a question that millions of people wanted answered. However, Cruise quickly made it clear that he wouldn't divulge anything specific about what led to his divorce at that time.
“She knows why, and I know why. She’s the mother of my children, and I wish her well.”
Do Nicole Kidman's Daughters Have A Relationship With Her Older Adopted Kids?
According to Vanity Fair's article about Cruise, the movie star spoke "curtly" when he refused to say what led to his divorce. Cruise then went on to say that the best thing for him to do at that time was to move on with his life .
“And I think that you just move on. And I don’t say that lightly. I don’t say that with anything. Things happen in life, and you do everything you can, and in every possible way, and there’s a point at which you just sometimes have to face the brutal reality.”
For a reporter to reach the heights of being employed by Vanity Fair and chosen to profile Tom Cruse, they have to be the kind of person who wants answers. With that in mind, it isn't overly surprising that Vanity Fair's writer didn't leave the subject after Cruise stated he was trying to move on.
Instead, Peretz stated that Cruise's comments made it seem like an event happened that led to the former A-list couple's divorce. However, Peretz also told Cruise that she recognized he may just be telling her to mind her own business.
Nicole Kidman Was Outraged To Be Asked About Her Marriage To Tom Cruise
Hugh Grant Lost Out On $20 Million After He Was Accidentally Offered Tom Cruise's Role In Jerry Maguire
In response to both of those sentiments, Cruise restated that Kidman knows what happened, and he only wants the best for his ex-wife.
“No. I mean, she knows why, and she is the mother of my children, and I wish her well,”
At that point in the interview, Cruise told people obsessed with his divorce to "get a life". The last thing that Peretz asked Cruise which was related to his divorce was whether he looked back at the experience of making Eyes Wide Shut with Kidman differently. Cruise simply stated that nothing about that experience had changed.
How successful was Eyes Wide Shut financially and how was it reviewed, according to The Numbers and Rotten Tomatoes?
“The experience was the experience. I don’t feel that way. I don’t feel that way. I don’t. I’ve gone through everything. It was what it was.”
Nicole Kidman Was Outraged By Being Asked This Tom Cruise Question
In 2021, Nicole Kidman starred in Being the Ricardos and her acclaimed performance later netted her an Oscar nomination. That film focused on Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's relationship behind the scenes of I Love Lucy. When The Guardian interviewed Kidman about the movie in 2021, she was asked a question about Tom Cruise that offended the beloved actor.
Nicole Kidman Admitted To "Fears And Insecurities" Amid Plastic Surgery Rumors Backed By Doctors
When Kidman was asked about how Being the Ricardos portrayed Ball and Arnaz's relationship, she gave a thoughtful answer.
"This film says you can make an extraordinary relationship thrive and leave remnants of it that exist forever. Yeah, that’s really gorgeous. You can’t make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with. And I think that’s all very relatable. You may have kids with them. You may not, but they were very much in love.”
In response to Kidman's answer, The Guardian's interviewer asked if she was bringing up her failed marriage to Tom Cruise. While the article doesn't reveal how that question was posed, the writer assures it was asked with "exquisite care".
Still, according to The Guardian's writer, Kidman "chokes just a little" at the suggestion before completely denying she was referring to Cruise. “Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No. I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no.”
Tom Cruise filed to end his marriage to Nicole Kidman in February 2001 which means they split up two decades before The Guardian interview. Kidman went on to marry Keith Urban in June 2006, which means the interview also took place more than 15 years after she got remarried.
After quoting Kidman, The Guardian's article states that she was "angry" to be asked about Cruise. The fact that Kidman called out the interviewer's question as "almost sexist" proves how outraged the actor was .
“And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist, because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right.’”

Entertainment | congressional recount: 16 ballots being challenged in san mateo county — some of which went uncounted due to a ‘simple oversight’, entertainment, entertainment | tom cruise’s daughter suri will soon be free to talk about their estrangement and scientology: report, with suri cruise turning 18 this week, she should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, a scientology expert says in a new report.
Tom Cruise’s three ex-wives, Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, probably would have a lot to say about being married to the famously intense mega-star and their time inside his beloved Church of Scientology.
But these women have mostly kept Cruise’s secrets, with experts in the inner workings of Scientology saying that Kidman and Holmes, in particular, probably signed non-disclosure agreements when their marriages to the “Top Gun” actor ended.
But no such agreement probably applies to Cruise’s youngest child, Suri Cruise, from whom he’s long been estranged, Page Six reported . With Suri turning 18 on Thursday, she and her mother Katie Holmes should no longer receive the reported $400,000 a year Cruise paid as part of a divorce settlement. Cruise also agreed to pay Suri’s college and health care costs, Page Six added.
As an adult, Suri Cruise should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, journalist and Scientology expert Tony Ortega told Page Six.
“Suri would have been too young to sign any agreement (when her parents divorced in 2012), but she will now be free to talk if she wants to and it’s going to be really interesting if she has something to say,” Ortega said.
Page Six said that representatives for Cruise, Holmes and the Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
It’s possible that Suri may choose to stay silent about her famous father. For one thing, if she gave an interview or published a tell-all about him, she’d probably have to give up the mostly private life she’s been able to enjoy thus far. People credit a protective Holmes with trying to give Suri as normal life as is possible under the circumstances, while raising her in New York City.
“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” a source told Page Six. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”
Suri’s life, though, started out in a very public way. As Page Six pointed out, she was once “the most famous baby in America” because of the very high-profile way that Cruise conducted his courtship of the “Dawson’s Creek” star, who was 16 years younger that Cruise when they began dating. When news came that Cruise and Holmes had become parents to a baby daughter in April 2006, a global frenzy erupted, with media outlets competing to be the first to publish the little girl’s photos.
At the age of five months, Suri Cruise made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, in a glossy photo taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.
For the first six years of Suri’s life, Cruise seemed to dote on his youngest daughter and enjoy being seen with her in public. He also is the father of two older children, Isabella, now 31, and Connor Cruise, now 29, whom he adopted with Kidman.
But Suri’s relationship with her father changed after Holmes reportedly “blindsided” him by filing for divorce in 2012. The following year, Cruise gave a deposition in his $50 million court fight against a pair of tabloid magazines and admitted that Holmes filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology,” court documents revealed, Page Six reported.
There have been questions about whether Holmes and her daughter were declared Scientology “suppressive persons,” or SPs, after the divorce. According to Scientology , SPs are people who have “anti-social” personalities who seek to “upset, continuously undermine, spread bad news about and denigrate betterment activities and groups.” Scientology recommends that members stay away from SPs for their own well-being, but the church’s own website said it is “extremely rare” to label someone an SP.
“We don’t know for sure if Katie was ever declared an SP,” Ortega told Page Six. A regular church member, whose wife and daughter left Scientology, would be encouraged to disconnect from them, but Cruise might have been spared that option because of his “top celebrity” status. “He gets to ignore all this stuff,” Ortega said.
In any case, Holmes secured sole custody of their daughter, while Cruise retained “meaningful” visitation rights, according to The Blast . Yet, public sightings of Cruise with his daughter soon dwindled, with Page Six saying they were last seen together at Disney World in the summer of 2012.
Even if Suri has lived a mostly private life, paparazzi are known to follow her and her mother Katie Holmes around the streets of Manhattan. Still, as Suri reportedly prepares to head off to college, Holmes revealed in a 2023 interview with Glamour that she has grown up to be “an incredible person.”

Nicole Kidman's 4 Children: Everything She's Said About Parenting
Get to know the actress's four kids: Bella, Connor, Sunday and Faith
Nicole Kidman is the proud mother of four kids.
The Big Little Lies star shares two children, Bella and Connor, with ex-husband Tom Cruise . She also has two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, with her longtime love Keith Urban , to whom she's been married for nearly two decades.
Kidman became a first-time mother in 1993, when she and her then-husband Cruise adopted their daughter Bella. A few years later, the pair welcomed son Connor into their family. Though Kidman and Cruise split in 2001, she told Elle in 2008 that the former couple's kids were raised "amidst a lot of love."
"They are generous, kind and hardworking," Kidman later said of her two older children. "And these are traits that I love to see in my children ."
After splitting from Cruise, the Being the Ricardos actress went on to marry Urban on June 25, 2006. Two years later, they welcomed their first daughter, Sunday Rose, followed by her younger sister, Faith Margaret, in 2010.
Kidman, who has been open about her fertility struggles, told Marie Claire Australia in 2021 that she always wanted a big family. "I would've loved 10 kids," she said. "I love mothering, I love kids: They're quirky, funny and unfiltered. And then you get to see them grow and send them on their way."
Kidman said that her daughters are part of her support system while talking to PEOPLE for the magazine's 50th anniversary in April 2024.
"I have my sister, mother, nieces, nephews, daughters. I'm raising a soon to be 16-year-old and a 13-year-old who are divine. They're just lovely people and I'm so lucky that I have Keith, who's just my love, my deep, deep love. That gives me the ability to go and do whatever I have to do because I know where I can come back to," she said.
While Kidman has mainly kept her kids out of the spotlight, she has shared a few anecdotes about her family life over the years. Her two younger daughters even made a rare appearance — albeit virtually — alongside their mother at the 2021 Golden Globes .
From everything she's said about being a mother to her sweetest moments with her children, here's what to know about Nicole Kidman 's four kids: Bella, Connor, Sunday and Faith.
Bella Kidman Cruise , 31
Kidman and Cruise adopted daughter Isabella Jane shortly after her birth in Miami on Dec. 22, 1992.
"From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies ," Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2007. "And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that's when we would adopt [our daughter] Bella."
Though she grew up with her father in Beverly Hills, Isabella – who goes by the nickname Bella – has stayed mostly out of the spotlight. She graduated from West London's Delmar Academy of Make-up and Hair, before transitioning to a career in fashion.
The burgeoning designer got her start working for Holmes and Yang, the fashion line of Cruise's ex-wife, Katie Holmes . She started her own line , BKC (a.k.a Bella Kidman Cruise), in 2018, selling t-shirts adorned with her own drawings.
"Bella has been an artist her entire life. Her go-to medium is marker on paper with her inspiration for her artwork drawn largely from friends, fashion, and music," a statement on her line's site reads .
In 2015, she married British I.T. consultant Max Parker , and though neither of her famous parents attended the nuptials, Cruise reportedly helped pay for the event, while a Kidman source told PEOPLE that she was " very happy for Bella ."
While Bella tends to keep a low profile, she does maintain an active Instagram presence , regularly posting photos of her art along with the occasional selfie. In March 2023, she even debuted a new hairstyle on the app, showing off her newly dark brunette shag haircut and bangs.
Connor Cruise , 29
Kidman and Cruise adopted their second child, son Connor, just after his birth in Florida on Jan. 17, 1995. Though her marriage to Cruise ended six years later, the actress has expressed her gratitude for the relationship, as it brought her her two older children.
"I got married really fast and really young," Kidman said in 2012. "But I don't regret that because it got me Bella and Connor and I did have a fantastic marriage for a long period."
Connor grew up in Los Angeles, and got his first real taste of the spotlight in 2008, when he acted alongside Will Smith in the drama Seven Pounds . Though he also had a role in the 2012 action film Red Dawn , he switched to music as a teen, releasing his debut single in 2013 and landing DJ gigs around the country.
Connor is also an avid deep-sea fisherman, a passion he attributes to his travels with his parents growing up. "We used to go fishing a lot when I was a little kid," he told PEOPLE in 2016. "I was blessed to travel the world as a young kid and now I'm traveling the world working."
The 29-year-old now resides in Florida and dedicates much of his time to fishing, as a source told PEOPLE in 2018. " Connor has a pretty simple life in Clearwater ," the insider said. "He lives in his own home in a Scientology community. His life is deep-sea fishing. He has a lot of friends and seems very well-liked."
In addition to his personal Instagram account — where he occasionally posts snaps of his impressive catches — he also runs a separate account dedicated to his barbecuing business, Connor's Meatshack .
Most recently, Connor shared a photo from a golf outing in April 2023. In the snap , he can be seen giving a thumbs up to the camera as he hits the course with a friend. "🏌️♂️⛳️," he captioned the image.
Sunday Rose Kidman Urban , 15
Kidman and Urban welcomed daughter Sunday Rose on July 7, 2008, in Nashville. According to PEOPLE, Kidman's father first suggested the name Sunday in honor of the Australian patron of the arts, Sunday Reed. The couple, who claim Sunday as their "favorite day," was clearly on board.
When Sunday was young, the family relocated to Tennessee. In addition to picking up her parents' Australian lingo, Sunday adopted a bit of a Southern accent.
"My daughters are Nashvillians! They have a southern drawl," Kidman told PEOPLE in 2016. "They have some Aussie. They have an unusual mix. They're hybrids."
Her Aussie accent isn't the only way she's following in her mom and dad's footsteps — Sunday has had a passion for music since she was a little girl. "She sings incessantly," Kidman said in 2010 of her then-2-year-old-daughter. "She has a repertoire of about 30 songs: 'The ABC Song,' 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Traffic Light,' 'So Long, Farewell.' "
It seems like Sunday, now 14, wants to follow her mother into the filmmaking industry as well. In a 2018 interview for TIME 100, Kidman shared that Sunday was already thinking of pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.
"I'm raising a little girl that's showing an interest in directing right now, " she said. "I want her to have a path for that."
At the 2017 Palm Springs International Film Festival, Kidman told E! News that Sunday also does some acting: "My daughter just got cast in her school play," she said. "So, that's been the main priority, learning lines with her."
Faith Margaret Kidman Urban , 13
Kidman and Urban surprised fans when they announced that they had welcomed daughter Faith Margaret via gestational surrogate on Dec. 28, 2010, in Nashville.
Like her sister, Faith's name has a sweet meaning. Despite their fertility struggles, Kidman and Urban " never gave up faith they'd have another child together," a friend of the couple told PEOPLE after her birth. As for her middle name, "Margaret" comes from Kidman's grandmother.
Juggling two young daughters with Kidman and Urban's busy careers isn't easy, though the actress told PEOPLE in 2019 that their family always comes first.
"At this stage in our lives, it's what works for the family and what works for our own joy," she said of avoiding jobs that mean too much time away from their daughters.
Kidman and Urban have done their best to keep their daughters' lives private, though both Faith and Sunday have occasionally made public appearances over the years. They were extras in their mom's HBO show Big Little Lies , and voiced baby birds in the film Angry Birds 2 . The girls even became close with the children of Kidman's Big Little Lies costars, as she explained to PEOPLE.
"They've grown up with those kids because I had them on-set around Monterey, and I'm like, 'Playdates, playdates!' " she said.
The pandemic brought on new challenges for Kidman's two younger children. Speaking to Glamour U.K. in November 2020, she explained that Faith and Sunday were " working through the emotions " of social distancing.
"One of the hardest things is just watching them pine and yearn for their friends," she added.
Earlier that year, Kidman spoke to Marie Claire Australia about how her husband was outnumbered and had to retreat from the "female-heavy" house on occasion.
" We're definitely female-heavy ! But as the girls say, 'The dog's a boy!' " she joked, adding that her husband finds solace in one of his shared hobbies with Faith.
"Oh, and he Googles cars — I'll know when he's stressed 'cause he's Googling cars," she said. "I couldn't care less what car I'm driving; you can pick me up in any old thing. But Keith and Faith love cars."
Though Kidman rarely posts her children on social media, she did share a sweet tribute for Faith's 11th birthday in December 2021. "Happy birthday our darling Faith. You are loved beyond measure," she captioned a photo of her daughter's birthday cake.
