Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

Visit ancient temples and walk history-laden pilgrim routes on a 8 day Koya-san & Kumano Trek.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
  • Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
  • Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
  • Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
  • Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell while in Japan?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

What will it cost for a...?

Japan's unit of currency is the yen:

  • Bento box = YEN 550

  • Coffee = YEN 100-600
  • Convenience store snack = YEN 200-500

Can I drink the water in Japan?

Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?

Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.

What is ATM access like in Japan?

ATMs are common in Japan but unfortunately many of them don't accept foreign-issued cards. However, you can access cash from non-Japanese bank accounts via the Cirrus and Maestro systems at all post office ATMs around the country, as well as ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu
  • 'please' - Onegaishimasu

What religions do they practice in Japan?

There are two dominant religions in Japan - Shinto and Buddhism. The majority of Japanese people practice both simultaneously, however, there is a small number of the population that practise other religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam.

  • Winter (December to February) can be cold and snowy, but it's a good time for winter sports and hot springs.
  • Japan is a popular tourist destination, and some attractions can be crowded, especially during peak travel seasons. If you want to avoid crowds, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons (April to May and September to November).

Events and Festivals

  • Japan has many cultural events and festivals throughout the year, such as the cherry blossom season in spring, the Gion Festival in Kyoto in July, and the Sapporo Snow Festival in winter. If you want to experience a specific event or festival, plan your trip accordingly.

Japan Tours & Travel Guide

Japan Attractions & Landmarks Guide

A tour of Japan can swing wildly between the dazzling lights of Tokyo and the pastoral pleasures of a rural ryokan (traditional inn), the exquisite temples of Kyoto and a trip to towering Mt. Fuji. Whether it's the always intriguing Japanese culture that draws you in, or the chance to hike or sample hot springs in memorable countryside, Japan is sure to charm and surprise you at every turn.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling in Japan?

From solo travelers to history buffs , Japan is a multi-faceted destination, making it an ideal place for a small-group tour. Look for tours according to your personal interests, whether that’s snow sports or hiking in the north, fitting in as many temples and shrines as you can in a week or opting for a shopping and dining tour of Tokyo. See if you recognize your travel personality in any of the descriptions below, then get searching for the perfect Japan tour for you.

1.  Wildlife Lover

Perhaps surprisingly, Japan is a fantastic tour destination for wildlife fans. Where else will you see snow monkeys bathing in steaming hot springs? Or, more than 1,200 deer roaming freely in their own park in Nara.

There are cats galore on Aoshima Island and rabbits for days on Okunoshima. If you prefer your animals a bit more domesticated, seek out one of the ubiquitous animal cafes in Japan, from cats and dogs to hedgehogs and pot-bellied pigs.

2. Shutterbug

If you pack your camera equipment in its own suitcase, Japan is an awesome destination for your photography habit. Visit in the winter to capture snow animals, like the red-crowned cranes, Steller’s sea eagles, white-tailed eagles, whooper swans, Ezo deer and northern red fox in eastern Hokkaido.

Other photographer-friendly Japan destinations include the landscapes of Kawaguchiko, the floating Torii gate at Miyajima Island in Hiroshima, Dotonbori Street in Osaka and the streets of Kyoto.

3. Solo Traveler

Japan is one of the world’s safest destinations for solo travelers. Get the best of both worlds by signing up for a singles group tour, so you’ll have the backup knowledge and framework provided by your tour operator, but also the freedom to explore at will.

Free time? Visit Ueno Park and Ueno Zoo for its vast creature collection and serene surroundings. Or, while away a few hours at one of the many museums in Ueno. Regardless of your exact Japan destination, you’ll find welcoming, friendly faces.

4. Open-Minded

Want to try something new on your travels? Japan is the place. Look for a Japan trip that includes the chance to overnight in a pod hotel. The teeny tiny rooms are adorably cute, but many come with first-rate amenities, from luxury toiletries to spa treatments.

5. Zen-Seeker

When we think of Japan, we often think of peaceful rock gardens and quiet temples and shrines. You’ll find them in spades on your small-group tour, so relax and lose yourself in the moment. Look for a Japan tour that includes a visit to Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto, where you’re invited to sit and contemplate life amidst the stones, watching as a gardener carefully rakes lines into the garden.

6. Outdoors Enthusiast

Don’t overlook Japan for active travel tours. There are beautiful landscapes, world-class slopes and verdant forests for hiking, biking, boating and more. Take a day trip from Tokyo to Nikko for its forests, rivers and waterfalls, making a stop at Toshogu Shrine to meet the three wise monkeys.

For incredible foliage while you hike, take your Japan tour during the fall. Go hiking and boating in Shiretoko in Hokkaido or stay along one of the five lakes surrounding Mt. Fuji. Come winter, there is snowboarding, skiing, sledding, ice skating and more.

If you’re one to document your pretty plates of global cuisine on Instagram while you travel, Japan is a foodie dream-come-true. Not only are the tastes and textures out of this world, the presentation is lovely. Many regions you’ll visit during your small-group Japan tour feature their own special dishes, so you’ll have ample opportunity to taste truly local flavors.

The fine-dining scene is legit throughout Japan, with more than 200 Michelin-starred restaurants. Street food is on point, as well, particularly in Ueno, on Takeshita Street in Harajuku, or Dotonbori Street in Osaka.

If Osaka is part of your Japan tour, be sure to try kushikatsu (deep-fried meat or vegetables on skewers) and okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza). Plus, there’s all the fish, noodles, sushi, tempura … that you could possibly eat.

8. History Buff

If you love a nation that tells a story, look for a history-based small-group tour of Japan. You’ll be immersed in the culture and traditions of Japanese society, from its very beginnings until present day.

There are more than 20 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Japan, from Kyoto’s shrines and temples to Himeji Castle to the tiny island of Okinoshima. Bone up on Japan history at the Tokyo National Museum, the Edo Tokyo Museum, the Hakone Open Air Museum and the Samurai Museum.

9. Art Lover

It seems that just about everything in Japan is artistic, intricate and meaningful, making an art-based small-group tour a particularly good choice for the art aficionado. Visit the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo or the Ghibli museum, showcasing modern Japanese art.

Look for traditional ukiyo-e paintings, wood block prints, sculpture, origami, kimono fabric-dying, manga drawing lessons, pottery, ceramics, Japanese calligraphy and bonsai tree shearing.

What to Expect from a Japan Cultural Tour

Traveling in Japan you are welcomed into the fold of their ancient culture; a calm, peaceful, and minimalistic approach permeates everyday life throughout Japan. Your Japan tour guide will provide historical context and local insights throughout your tour.

Japanese people are very welcoming, if reserved by western standards. They take hospitality seriously, and are among the more open and friendly people when it comes to offering a beverage or meal. Homestays are a very popular accommodation type on cultural tours of Japan - as they let visitors to the country learn about the Japanese culture of hospitality on a much deeper level.

Along with their reverence for hospitality, Japanese people also place heavy importance on politeness. The country is regularly listed as one of the most polite countries in the world. It’s important to remember this as you travel in Japan.

How to be a polite traveler in Japan

1. Use the correct side of the escalator!

(Really this politeness rule really should apply around the world). But in Japan it’s a particularly funny and potentially confusing expectation. Because different sides of the escalator are used depending on what city you’re traveling in. In Tokyo, stand on the left, with the right open for passing. In Osaka and Kyoto, stand on the right side.

2. Wash before entering an onsen

This counter-intuitive rule must be adhered to if you don’t want to appear extremely rude and dirty! Going to an Onsen is a highlight for many travelers wishing to partake in this traditional bathing ritual. But be very cognisant that you rinse yourself off with soap before entering the Onsen waters. This is an important step and you’ll feel a much more amiable atmosphere from others in the Onsen.

3. Remove shoes inside

It is expected that you remove your shoes before entering homes and sometimes other establishments as well. This is a cultural expectation throughout Japan, and you’ll get used to it very quickly. Also note that slippers are not to be worn for walking over traditional Tatami mats - these should be tread on with socks only.

Food in Japan

Many people have a unique reverence for certain Japanese foods, which have obtained near cult status around the world. Ramen and sushi both hail from Japan originally and are adored by foodies.

While there is certainly a never ending supply of ramen and sushi to enjoy while you travel in Japan, there are also many other foods to try.

Especially as you travel through the Japanese countryside and smaller towns, you’ll have the opportunity to sample traditional Japanese food beyond the comfort zone of ramen and sushi.

Japanese food is full of interesting flavors and textures. When traveling in Japan, you’ll sample a lot of vegetable based dishes, broth based dishes, noodles, and fish. Don’t expect a lot of heavy meat dishes.

It can be difficult to adapt to Japanese food if you’re not used to it. And particularly difficult given the cultures emphasis on politeness - if you don’t want to finish your meal, it can be an uncomfortable situation. The best thing to do is approach each meal with an open mind, and try and be welcoming to new flavors.

Top dishes to sample in Japan - beyond Ramen and Sushi

1. Okonomiyaki - these savory fried pancakes are best enjoyed after you’ve watched them prepared right in front of you! The exacting timing and knife skills, are a joy to watch and it’s a great activity for being out with your new friends in your tour group. Okonomiyaki usually come with cabbage and beyond that several varieties of topping are available.

2. Udon - Wheat flour noodles that can be served warm or cold. Udon noodles are very versatile and are delicious with with vegetables, in soups, or served with meat. They are also tasty on their own with just a little bit of seasoning!

3. Gyoza Dumplings - If you travel almost anywhere in Japan, you will see a variation of Gyoza. These bright white dumplings, usually decorated on the top with brown character markings are filled with either pork, beef, chicken, beans, or vegetables. They are a great grab n go snack, often found for sale in train stations.

4. Yakiniku - Japanese barbeque at its finest! A very popular dish in Japan, Yakiniku is small chunks of chicken served on skewers. Beware! Traditional Yakiniku is designed to use the entire chicken; comb, heart, liver, you name it.

5. Japanese sweets - Japanese people love sweet foods and you’ll never have any trouble finding something to satisfy a sweet tooth. A lot of Japanese sweets are made with bean paste which can be a surprising taste for westerners. Green tea is also a common flavor.

Can't Miss Attractions in Japan

There are some main attractions that are must sees when in Tokyo including the Tokyo Tower, Meiji Shrine, Shibuya shopping, the Royal Palace. At Shibuya Station there is a statue of a dog named Hachiko ,  a famous meeting spot in the city. Oriental Bazarre is the one stop shop for all souvenirs and gifts from chopsticks to furniture.

Japan also has some great department stores, and Tokyo Hands is one of the best. There are beautiful parks throughout the city, one near the Royal Palace another called Arisugawa Park, and the Ueno Zoo is also a fun activity for families. And don't miss a chance to walk across the largest crosswalk in the world!

2. Hakkaido & Sapporo

Mostly known for their Sapporo beer, Sapporo is the main city on the northern island of Hokkaido. The Sapporo Ice Festival is a large winter festival with massive ice and snow sculptures, sculpted in formations of cartoon characters, pagoda buildings, and fun ice slides. Hokkaido is a great place for winter activities including skiing and snowboarding and ice drifting.

Kyoto has the iconic Japanese pagodas, including the Golden Palace. It is a beautiful, large park area with dozens of temples and pagodas to visit. The sites here are gorgeous especially during fall and cherry blossom season.

4. Hiroshima

Hiroshima is infamous for being the site of bombings by America in WWII. In the center of the city is a memorial, peace bell, and one building still standing with damage. It is a place for remembrance, and for the history buffs.

Souvenirs from Japan

Return from your expert-led, guided tour of Japan with a few meaningful souvenirs, beyond the standard fridge magnet and coaster. Ask about the significance behind the piece you’re about to buy so you can tell the story later, at home. Here are our favorite items to seek out and stash in our suitcase after a Japanese vacation.

1. Tsuko-Tegata : Look for these wooden passports at shrines, temples and hot springs you visit as part of your guided Japan tour. They are reminiscent of the passports that were required during the Edo period as people moved between areas of the country. The ones you can buy today as a souvenir from your Japan trip have a braid and bell attached and typically lovely calligraphy.

2. Omamori lucky charms : With their attached bells, omamori are intended to ward off evil spirits. There are charms for just about anything you can think of, from health and happiness to safe driving.

3. Chopsticks : Look for traditional chopsticks adorned with beautiful artwork. They’ll be sure to elevate your next Japanese takeout meal once you’re returned from your vacation. High-quality, lacquered chopsticks can be found at stores such as Tokyo Hands and Loft.

4. Yukatas : These light summer kimonos are a favorite item to buy as a Japan souvenir. Look for them in specialty kimono shops or, in the summer, at large supermarkets.

5. Okiagari Koboshi : These charming little Japanese dolls, made of papier-mache, are a tiny, easily packed souvenir. They stay standing upright even when pushed down, which is meant to symbolize resilience.

6. Ukiyo-e woodblock art : Popular during the Edo period, ukiyo-e artwork often includes likenesses of Mt. Fuji, life in the Edo period and famous Kabuki actors.

7. Bento boxes : Look for wappa bento boxes crafted in the odate magewappa method. This ancient method takes thin sheets of hinoki cypress and cedarwood and weaves them together into boxes and other containers. The craft originated in northern Japan during the Edo period.

8. Inkan stamps : Also called hanko stamps, these are name stamps used in Japan instead of signatures. Pick up an inexpensive one at a 100-yen shop or make your own, higher-quality one at a specialty store.

Winter Travel in Japan

Is winter a good time to visit Japan? Yes, if you want to beat the crowds, see a snow monkey, enjoy some of the world’s best skiing and really earn that delicious warm onsen soak.

See a different side of Japan when you visit in the winter, avoiding the crowds of spring and fall.

Here are a few of our favorite reasons why you should consider a guided tour of Japan during the winter:

1. Japan’s Skiing is Amazing

Tackle the Japanese Alps by ski or snowboard by visiting the northern island of Hokkaido. The resorts of Hokkaido routinely boast fresh powder and are some of the best in the world. In Honshu, there are several ski resorts within an easy train ride of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.

2. Winter is the Best Time for an Onsen Soak

Who doesn’t crave a warm onsen bath after a day on the slopes or ice skating. It’s even more delightful if it’s an outdoor onsen on a snowy day - definitely a magical moment during your trip to Japan. Among the most popular Japanese onsens are Ginzan Onsen in the Yamagata Prefecture, Kusatsu Onsen in the Gunma Prefecture and the Kurokawa Onsen in Kyushu, near Mt. Aso volcano.

3. You’ll Have the Chance to Attend a Snow Festival

Visit the winter wonderland of Sapporo during your tour of Hokkaido and attend the Yuki Matsuri snow festival. Held each February, the festival is famous for its incredible snow sculptures, skating, illuminations and games. Visit the Yamagata Prefecture and see the snow-covered trees at Zao Onsen that become works of art as the inches of snow pile up on their branches.

The trees take on an almost human-like shape - known as “snow monsters,” they make for a unique place to visit as part of your winter Japan tour. Another fun festival to include in your Japan guided tour is the Yunishigawa Kamakura Festival held at Yunishigawa Onsen Town in the Tochigi Prefecture.

Hundreds of Kamakura dome-shaped snow sculptures are lit up each night, making for a stunning snowscape. Finally, if you like a good light show, Tokyo and Osaka will fit the bill during your winter vacation in Japan. These, as well as other good-sized cities, are known for their amazing outdoor illuminations.

4. Winter is the Time to See Snow Monkeys (and Other Wildlife) in Japan

Visit the Snow Monkey Park, or Jigokudani Yaen-koen, and come face to face with the red-faced monkeys lounging in the park’s onsen. If you’re on Hokkaido, stop by the Tsuri-Ito Tancho Sanctuary to see the red-crowned cranes.

5. See a Picture-Perfect Traditional Japanese Village in All Its Glory

The traditional village of Shirakawa-go in the Gifu Prefecture flaunts its pointed roofs in gasshō-zukuri style best during the winter months. Ask the guide of your Japan tour to show you the way to the observation point above town for the best vantage point.

6. Ring in the New Year in a Temple or Shrine

Pray for good fortune in the coming year when you celebrate the first day of the year at a Japanese temple or shrine. Among the favorite shrines to visit on New Year’s Day are Kyoto’s huge Heian-jingu Shrine and Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its thousands of orange torii gates. If you’re visiting Tokyo on New Year’s during your tour, visit the Meiji-jingu Shrine, or in Osaka, visit the Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine.

Golden Week 2024: The Ultimate Guide to Japan’s Grandest Holiday

Welcome to the ultimate guide for celebrating Golden Week 2024 in Japan, a time when spring blooms and the nation embraces a series of holidays with open arms. As cherry blossoms paint the streets in hues of pink and festivals enliven the cities, Golden Week offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the rich cultural tapestry of Japan.

What is Golden Week?

Golden Week is one of the most anticipated holiday seasons in Japan, spanning the end of April and the beginning of May. It encompasses four national holidays within seven days, creating a rare opportunity for Japanese workers to take an extended break and spend time with family and friends. From Showa Day , celebrating the birthday of the Showa Emperor, to Children’s Day with its colorful carp streamers, each day holds a special significance, turning this week into a nationwide festival.

Shibuya district, Tokyo, Japan

Traveling During Golden Week: Tips and Tricks

Traveling in Japan during Golden Week can be both exhilarating and challenging. With the entire nation on the move, preparation is key. Here are some invaluable tips to navigate your way through the bustling holiday period:

  • Book Early: Accommodations and transport services can fill up months in advance. Use reliable booking platforms like Agoda to secure your stay and travel within Japan.
  • Embrace the Crowd: Popular tourist spots will be crowded. Consider visiting lesser-known destinations for a more tranquil experience.
  • Be Patient: Expect longer waits at restaurants and attractions. This is a great opportunity to slow down and soak in the surrounding beauty.

Must-Visit Destinations During Golden Week

Golden Week is the perfect time to explore some of Japan’s most iconic destinations. Here’s where you should be heading:

Tokyo’s Urban Splendor

The bustling capital, Tokyo, transforms during Golden Week with numerous events, from traditional festivals to modern parades. Don’t miss the chance to explore neighborhoods like Shinjuku and Shibuya. Find the perfect place to stay in Tokyo with Agoda’s listings .

Kyoto’s Timeless Charm

Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital, is breathtaking during Golden Week as temples and gardens come to life in spring colors. For a serene experience, visit the less crowded temples in the early morning. Check out TSUKIMI HOTEL in Kyoto on Agoda for a cozy stay.

Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, Japan

Day 1 & 2: Tokyo – A Metropolitan Adventure

Begin your Golden Week exploration in the vibrant city of Tokyo. Spend the first two days discovering the contrast between the old and the new. Visit the historic Asakusa district, home to the iconic Senso-ji Temple , and explore the modern marvels of Shibuya and Shinjuku . Experience the frenzy of the Shibuya Crossing and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building .

Day 3 & 4: Kyoto – The Heart of Traditional Japan

Travel to Kyoto on the third day, a city that captivates with its timeless beauty. Visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of vermilion torii gates and the tranquil Arashiyama Bamboo Grove . Don’t miss the chance to participate in a traditional tea ceremony and explore the historic Gion district , where you might spot a Geiko or Maiko adorning the streets.

Day 5: Nara & Osaka – Journey Through History and Modernity

On the fifth day, take a short trip to Nara, the first permanent capital of Japan. Visit Todai-ji Temple , home to Japan’s largest bronze Buddha statue, and mingle with friendly deer in Nara Park . In the evening, head to Osaka and savor the vibrant street food scene in the Dotonbori district.

Day 6 & 7: Hakone & Mount Fuji – A Scenic Retreat

Wrap up your Golden Week by soaking in the natural beauty of Hakone and the iconic Mount Fuji. Enjoy a peaceful cruise on Lake Ashi and marvel at Mount Fuji’s majestic presence. Indulge in a relaxing hot spring bath at one of Hakone’s many onsen resorts .

Golden Week is not only a feast for the eyes but also for the palate. Each region in Japan offers something unique. In Tokyo, don’t miss out on trying the Tsukiji Fish Market’s fresh sushi. Kyoto’s matcha sweets are a must, especially the delicate matcha tea from a traditional tea house. In Osaka, the street food reigns supreme with takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancake).

Japan’s public transportation

Practical Information for Golden Week Travelers

Getting around.

Japan’s public transportation system is remarkably efficient, with extensive networks of trains, buses, and subways. Purchasing a Japan Rail Pass before your trip can be a cost-effective way to explore the country. Remember, reservations can become particularly important during Golden Week.

Weather and Packing Tips

Spring weather in Japan is mild, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). Packing light layers is advisable, as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes and an umbrella for those occasional spring showers.

Currency and Payments

The Japanese yen (¥) is the currency of Japan. While major credit cards are accepted in many places, it’s wise to carry some cash, especially when visiting smaller towns or rural areas. ATMs are widely available, but those in convenience stores are most likely to accept international cards.

Setsugekka-Japan railways, Niigata

Sustainability and Conservation Efforts

Japan is making strides in sustainability and conservation, and as travelers, we can contribute too. Here are some ways to ensure your visit is eco-friendly:

  • Use Public Transportation: Take advantage of Japan’s efficient public transport to reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Support Local: Eat at local restaurants, shop from traditional markets, and stay in locally-owned accommodations.
  • Respect Nature: When enjoying Japan’s beautiful parks and natural landscapes, follow the “leave no trace” principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to holiday in Japan depends on what type of adventure you’d like to have! The island nation is a masterclass in contrast – ancient tradition sits by the latest advances in technology, snowfields sit above sun-soaked beaches and the bustling high-rises of main cities are interspersed with Zen gardens.

Most visitors on a Japan holiday package will start in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or Hiroshima. In the capital, scramble across the manic Shibuya Crossing before shopping until you drop, or watch the city go by from the 634m-high Skytree. Travel by Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto to explore the ancient capital, home to countless palaces shrines, temples and gardens, or continue onto the nation’s kitchen of Osaka to ‘kuiadore’ – eat yourself broke! Learn more about the country’s long history at Hiroshima before venturing further afield – will it be the snowfields and onsens of Niseko or the beaches of Okinawa?

With so much to do with a Japan holiday package, it’s best to spend at least two weeks exploring all that it has to offer – but if you can spare longer, we wouldn’t be complaining!

Japan Tours

Japan is a captivating destination unlike any other. A country of variant landscapes, its 6,852 islands are jam-packed with natural wonders and jaw-dropping architecture. But in early spring, Japan comes alive when its famed cherry blossom trees bloom and drench the landscape in spectacular shades of pink, red and white. Kicking off in the south and sweeping upwards, the sakura zensen (cherry blossom front) typically reaches the cities of Tokyo and Kyoto by late March and, weather permitting, continues showering them in petals until mid-April.

Travel to Japan during sakura season to snap famous sights showered in petals, explore parks in bloom and learn the traditional art of hanami (flower viewing). Along the way, sample the vast array of spring treats on offer – from cherry blossom-flavoured Kit Kats to sakura mochi (sweet rice cakes).

During this time, tourists can enjoy the main attractions, such as the vast fields of Shikisai-no-Oka and the majestic beauty of Shikisai Hill.

They can engage in activities like exploring Biei's charming beauty, skiing, Onsen (hot springs), enjoying a relaxing soak in the famous Noboribetsu hot springs, or staying at comfortable ryokans or motels with stunning mountain views. They can also savor these gastronomical delights in local delicacies like fresh seafood , spicy ramen, and tasty dairy products at the best diners like Ramen Yokocho and Nijo Market.

7) Sun-bask on the shorelines of Okinawa

Off-boarding at the Naha airport, Okinawa's gorgeous shorelines and rich history welcome avid travelers, making it an excellent destination year-round for all travel enthusiasts visiting Japan. Once here, travelers can explore the lively marine life at the Churaumi Aquarium and the Ryukyu culture of historical Shuri Castle.

They can rest and recoup at beachfront resorts like the Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa, or Halekulani, Okinawa, to experience the true essence of Okinawa, Japan. Visitors can also spoil their tastebuds with the local flavors of sample Okinawan soba, agu pork , goya champuru, and rafute pork.

Epic Japan: Speed Trains & Street Food

Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.

Japan Express Tour

  • In-depth Cultural

Japan Express

Really enjoyed the fact that this was a very 'authentic' tour with traditional Ryokans and using the public transport used by the locals. Also loved that there was so much flexibility and I could opt to join the group or go off on my own. Really enjoyed it.

Japan Adventure Tour

Japan Adventure

Has been a great experience. I have enjoyed the activites very much and our guide Zoë did a good job.

Essential Japan Tour

Essential Japan

My family and I had a great time. We got to experience as much as we could and covered plenty of territory. For a first timer booking a tour thru this company I was extremely pleased. Will definitely be booking our next adventure with them.

Japan Express: Osaka to Tokyo Tour

Japan Express: Osaka to Tokyo

Excellent tour with G Adventures, and had the best tour guide (Ayako Ueda). I’ve been on several tours in different countries & continents and would say this is the best by far - great itinerary & excellent tour guide!

Stunning Japan with Shirakawa-go (private 3 star hotel rooms) Tour

Stunning Japan with Shirakawa-go (private 3 star hotel rooms)

Unbelievable tour. The best food I've ever had, and our guide was lovely. Can't wait to go back to Japan.

Wonders of Japan End Osaka Tour

Wonders of Japan End Osaka

Advertised as English/Spanish, but the guides were clearly more at home en Espanol.

9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms) Tour

9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)

We are very satisfied with our tour of Japan, Steve our guide told us interesting history of Japan on a daily basis. Steve went above and beyond helping several of us with personal problems. All the tours we went on were very interesting my only regret is not having Disney Tokyo on the list of self tours and the cable cars on Mt. Fuji.

Discover Japan Tour

Discover Japan

The Discover Japan tour was everything I wanted and more; our CEO Takae took us a wide variety of locations across Japan where we got to experience both the big, famous sights as well as the small, unexpected cultural experiences that'll stay with me for a very long time. Everything was incredibly well organised, great accommodation and well communicated from G Adventures before the tour started with a clear itinerary and details of what to pack. I'd really recommend this tour to anyone looking to experience a wide breadth of what Japan has to offer!

Japan: Castles & Cuisine Tour

Japan: Castles & Cuisine

Izumi was the perfect CEO! She went above and beyond to make the tour the perfect experience.

Japan: Tokyo Nights & Kyoto Temples Tour

Japan: Tokyo Nights & Kyoto Temples

Mack is the best tour guide ever!!!! We had such a fantastic trip because of him!

Premium Japan Tour

Premium Japan

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun Tour

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun

Ricardo was our trip leader and was incredible! He is so chill. Even with such a fast paced tour he was always calm and collected and always giving out recommendations and advice for things to do. The trip is fast paced and involves a lot of walking and public transport. I personally loved this as it meant I was always busy and travelling like a local. There is a good amount of free time and to be able to do Nara on the free day is great as it meant we could take our time there. The hostels were pretty good (one was a bit too cramped for the amount of people but that’s hostel travelling for you). The rest were good and to be honest it’s only a place to sleep as you’ll be so busy. I would highly recommend this trip. I had never heard of the company before but so glad I took the risk. Again I would like to thank Ricardo for being so amazing as a tour leader!

Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.
It was a really great experience! Having both guided tours and lots of free time made for a nicely balanced tour where our guide, Toshimi, a very knowledgeable local, would show us parts of Japan and tell us of their significance historically and socially, and also tell us how and where to appreciate Japan during our free time. Our guide loves Japan's history and it was very interesting talking to him about Japan. He also made lots of great recommendations on places to see and eat at, and overall made the whole tour experience very convenient, fun, and informative.
Wow! What an amazing tour. Zoe is just amazing. Was so fortunate to travel in such a friendly group at such an amazing time of year with the blossoms. Loved the balance of free time and activities, with time to relax on nights in the mountains. Feel like 12 days was perfect to feel like I saw the best bits of Japan
