Jimmy Martin Travel wins best in Scotland award

Jimmy martin travel in stockbridge has triumphed at the annual scottish passenger agents’ association (spaa) travel awards with the top title of scotland’s best small travel agency. .

The company was awarded the title of Scotland’s Best Small Travel Agency for the fifth time – and the fourth consecutive time – in the influential Agent Achievement Awards.

Almost 600 travel professionals watched as Jimmy Martin, Richard Sturgeon, Lorraine Gerstenberger and Emma Morrice received the award, at the SPAA Travel Awards in Glasgow. 

The travel agency award categories are voted for by travel companies such as tour operators, airlines, cruise lines and tourist boards.

In a popular win, comments on social media included, “Absolutely no surprise. Totally deserved. You set the bar so high in everything you do. Congratulations!”

Founder Jimmy Martin said: “We like to think we put the ‘you’ first in travel; whether that ‘you’ is our travellers or the wonderful suppliers we work with. We like to build long term relationships and to appreciate the small details. We specialise in highly personal, luxury travel experiences and our philosophy has, and always will be, attention to detail and personal service. We’re a small, but incredibly tight team and this award celebrates the success that hard work and focus on finding the perfect trip for each and every individual brings.”

The firm celebrates its 21 st  birthday this year. Jimmy Martin opened the business and the shop on Raeburn Place in November 2001, just 6 weeks after international travel was decimated by 9/11. Since then, the firm has faced challenges in the form of foot and mouth, bird flu, the ash cloud and Covid. Like many high street businesses, the firm now faces sky-rocketing overhead costs. 

However, Jimmy remains upbeat about the challenges to come. 

“People have a desire and a need to travel for a myriad of reasons and we’ve proven time and time again that we can weather the travel storms and come back stronger. I’m a firm believer that a face to face environment for buying travel is absolutely the right one. When someone is in front of us, we can advise and suggest elements which make travel truly memorable.”

I've never really understood the need for a travel agent. My travel style is general to book cheap, snag an airbnb and wing it, so i've never really needed the promise of a 7 night tour to whatsit or a charming romantic country bed and breakfast get away. Until I decided that I too, would become one of the all inclusive junkies. I work a rather hectic job and as much as I love the bustle of vacationing in a new city, my travel style isn't really relaxing. Generally, I spend most of my vacation days at full tilt trying to see and eat as much as possible. But as I started looking at the upcoming year, I realized I might fancy sitting on a beach, eating buffet food, getting drinks brought to me and generally unplugging. It took 30 years but I finally understand the appeal of the "sit and do nothing" vacation. But the thing is, the "sit and do nothing" is much harder to find then the "book and explore willy nilly vacation". My go-to sites for flights suddenly became a huge, confusing wave of information when I wanted to book an all inclusive, lazy vacation. Jimmy Martin is right down the street from my house and I walk by it all the time, so I decided to take a sneak peek at their website first. It's a good website - clean, easy to navigate and has some pretty snazzy deals. It was enough to warrant a stop in for more information. My stop was quick, but the folks here were really helpful. I travel solo mostly, and all inclusives can be a pain in the butt to book for one person but they gave me some really useful tips/options, without making me feel like a leper for wanting to beach vacation solo. I was only in for a few minutes, but left with a few new places to consider and plans to return at a later date after snooping locations on their website to talk about booking something concrete. I'm not sure if a travel agent is going to be something that replaces my age old habit of internet surfing vacations, but in this particular instance, I think they may become my go-to for the rare lazy travel. If you seek a travel agent - they are very nice and worth chatting with/snooping online.

Jimmy Martin Best Small Agent in Scotland

Raeburn Place based Jimmy Martin Travel has been awarded the prestigious title of Best Small Agent in Scotland at a glittering ceremony in front of 1,000 industry professionals. Founder Jimmy Martin has more than 30 years’ experience as a travel agent and established the business in the Edinburgh neighbourhood of Stockbridge in 2001. The firm employs six staff most of whom have worked at the firm for at least eight years; some having been there since the day the agency opened its doors.

The Travel Weekly Agent Achievement Awards , which were held at the Park Plaza in London honour the travel industry’s best agents and agencies in the country. The awards are considered to be the absolute pinnacle of excellence for the UK travel trade, benchmarking winners as truly excellent. There were five finalists in the Best Small Agent category, with suppliers voting for the agency they felt best delivered excellence in all aspects of travel to their clients.

Jimmy Martin, a former president of the Scottish Passenger Agent’s Association ,  says of the award win, “This is a marvellous accolade for Jimmy Martin Travel. To be given the title of Best in Scotland gives such recognition to the great team we have. I’m proud to work with a fantastic, dedicated and very experienced team.

The shop opened just six weeks after the events of September 11th, when it was predicted that worldwide leisure travel would be severely curtailed as travellers feared for their safety. Use of the internet to book travel was just coming into its own and larger brands had the capability to offer heavy discounts.  Others would have seen it as the perfect storm, but it was Jimmy’s vision that people need to travel and that most wold return, in time. to their favourite pastime and want to satisfy their wanderlust. He was proved right.

“Confidence in the local travel agent has returned significantly in recent years,” continues Jimmy. “Some people have a wariness of the internet in terms of service, security and choice, but most of all in value for money. Agent buys business where he started more than 40 years ago.

An Edinburgh agent has bought the business where he began his career more than 40 years ago as a ‘brochure boy’.

Jimmy Martin Travel has acquired Frutin Travel in Leith as part of plans to grow the agency across the city.

Martin previously worked at Frutin Travel, rising to “unofficial MD”, before establishing Jimmy Martin Travel in Stockbridge 20 years ago.

He recalled: “I started there as a fresh-faced 16-year-old learning the business, but after three months I had not booked a holiday. Then someone came in saying they needed to go to Toronto next week. My boss said, ‘do it or you’ll never be booking a holiday in your life’. I did and went on from there.”

As part of the take-over of Frutin, partner Emma Morrice will become part of the Jimmy Martin team at its Raeburn Place offices.

Martin said: “Frutin Travel has always been dear to my heart and to be expanding with this acquisition, following 18 months of the most challenging times the travel industry has ever faced, cements our faith in our future business growth.

“Emma brings with her a specialism in last-minute beach holidays which will expand our holiday portfolio for clients. She also has a deep knowledge of America, south-east Asia, Vietnam and Cambodia, which will enhance the advice we give to our existing client base who enjoy long-haul travel with an element of adventure.”

Morrice added: “I am delighted to be joining such a proactive and professional agency which is exhibiting strong recovery from the pandemic.”

Martin said he had confidence in the retail sector: “In the last two years, it has really come back to the agent.

“Anyone who booked their holiday online and experienced hours on hold trying in vain to secure a refund or a credit for their trip during Covid knows what a challenging, stressful experience that was.

“People are seeking a ‘high touch’ service to help them navigate fast changing protocols, border restrictions and amended airline schedules.”
