koh samui to krabi travel

The only direct way to get from Koh Samui to Krabi is by air. All other options require taking a fast or slow ferry from Koh Samui to Surat Thani – mainland Thailand. And from Surat Thani take a bus, minivan or private transfer to Krabi.

The ferry+bus combo tickets are the best way to get from Koh Samui to Krabi with reliable daily departures and a scheduled travel time of approximately 4 hours.

For budget travelers the slow ferry+bus combo is the most affordable option. This option isn’t as comfortable as the previous and there is often disorganization result in delays.

Flying from Koh Samui to Krabi would be the fastest option. However there is no reliable daily flight schedule.

Ferry+Private transfers are a good option if you’re traveling as a larger group. This option is expensive and total travel time is similar to cheaper options.

We do not personally recommend the D.I.Y option simply because it will cost the same (or more) as the slow ferry combo tickets. You’ll also need to handle all the logistics and connections yourself.

Best Way to Get from Koh Samui to Krabi

Koh samui to krabi ferry booking option

▶ Best for: Families, solo travelers, groups – anyone that wants a reliable option at an affordable price.

I always recommend taking the Lomprayah boat+bus combo ticket because it requires no logistical planning, the price is affordable and connections are handled by the same company.

This option is easy because all you need to do is buy the tickets and show up at the pier on your day of travel. From here a speedboat or catamaran takes you to Surat Thani. And from here passengers board an air conditioned bus that goes to Krabi town.

It’s fast, convenient and affordable and everything is handled by a reputable ferry and bus company.

“Easy experience, staff on all areas were excellent and helpful. Would highly recommend both the ease of booking and the operators during checkin/ travel and onward journey”

Booking tickets

How to book tickets to Krabi from Koh Samui

Tickets can be bought either from a reputable travel agent in Koh Samui or directly at the Lomprayah office in Maenam. Booking tickets online is a more convenient option as you can see all the departure times and have all related information in one place. Regardless how you buy tickets, its recommended to buy in advance as they tend to sell out.

Schedules and Departures

Lomprayah boats depart from either Na-Thon pier, on the west coast of Koh Samui or Maenam in the North. You will need to be at the Pier at the latest 30 minutes before departure. If you’re in Chaweng or Lamai (where most tourists stay) it will take around 45 minutes to drive down to Na Thon Pier and 20 minutes to Maenam. So make sure to leave your hotel between 1 hour to 90 minutes before departure depending on which pier you need to go to.

The first part of the journey is Koh Samui to Surat Thani and is done by speedboat or Catamaran. Travel time is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.

Bus from Surat Thani to Krabi

The speedboat/catamaran docks in Tapee Pier in Surat Thani. From here you’ll be transferred to an air conditioned bus with comfortable seats. Any big luggage will go into the bus storage compartment. So make sure that all valuables are with you in your carry on.

The total journey from Surat Thani to Krabi takes approximately 2 hours 20 minutes and terminates in Krabi town. If you’re staying in Krabi town, you can take a taxi to your hotel which shouldn’t cost more than ฿100 ($3) or possibly even walk as the bus stops in one of the most popular areas to stay in Krabi.

Find the best accommodation in Krabi Town

The seatran ferry from Koh Samui to Krabi

This option takes the same route as the previous. The difference is in the travel time because the boat is slower. And also, since we have also done a trip with this cheaper option, we can say it is not quite as comfortable as with Lomprayah and also there was some disorganization which resulted in a delay of around 1.5 hours.

Tip: “If you suffer from motion sickness these cheaper combo tickets are a better option as sea transport in on board a larger vessel and doesn’t rock around as much as the speedboats”

There is currently 2 other companies offering boat+bus combo tickets at a cheaper price compared to Lomprayah. The best way to book Koh Samui to Krabi combo tickets would be online because you’d have all the available options in one place. You can compare prices, travel duration, departure times and even take a look at the reviews left by pervious passengers.

You can view all Koh Samui to Krabi transport options here. Regardless of which option you choose, they will all get you to Krabi town.

A Thai airways plane. The best way to get from Bangkok to Krabi

Air travel from Koh Samui to Krabi is the fastest option with a total travel time of just 55 minutes. Flights depart from Koh Samui airport which is located about 10 minutes drive from Chaweng and Lamai. Planes land in Krabi international airport (KBV) which is about 30 minutes drive from Krabi town.

While flying is the easiest and fastest way to get from Koh Samui to Krabi, there’s a few things you should consider before booking a flight.

→ Schedule: The main issue is that there aren’t regular daily flights. So on certain days you’ll find a flight and on other days none. This is quite inconvenient when planning a trip.

→ Travel duration: Between arriving at the airport 2 hours ahead of your flight, plane taxi after landing, baggage claim, and Krabi airport being about 30 minutes out of town, the total travel journey may actually exceed that of the boat+bus combo tickets.

→ Price: Koh Samui airport is owned by Thai airways. So they have a monopoly and flight prices are often expensive. Flights from Koh Samui to Krabi are usually well over ฿3500 ($100) and that doesn’t include any checked in luggage

You can click here to view flights on your dates. If flights are too expensive or there is no flights on your day of travel, then I would suggest just taking one of the previous options.

A private transfer is a convenient way to get from Koh Samui to Krabi

If you want something a bit more private you can consider booking a private transfer after reaching the mainland from Koh Samui. This option would require purchasing your boat tickets and organizing a private transfer separately.

If you’re in a group of at least 3 or more you can split the cost of a private transfer making this a convenient way to go directly from the pier in Surat Thani to your Hotel in Krabi.

You can click here to view all boat departures.

For your transfer from Surat Thani to Krabi you have 3 options.

  • Ask your hotel in Koh Samui to organize a transfer for you. This will most likely be the most expensive option.
  • Arrive in Surat Thani and organize from their. Their will be taxis and minivans at the pier you arrive in.
  • Book your private transfer online ahead of your arrival in Surat Thani.

I listed this as the last option as it is the least popular way to reach Krabi from Koh Samui. That’s because with this option you will need to handle all the logistics and planning of the journey. Also, it won’t necessarily be any cheaper doing it this way as you’ll still need to take a ferry/boat from Koh Samui to Surat Thani and then take the bus to Krabi.

As the previous options, you’ll first need to secure your boat tickets either in person from an agent or an official boat company or buy the tickets online.

Getting to the bus station

Regardless which boat you take or which pier you dock in Surat Thani, you will need to get to Surat Thani Bus Station 1 . There will be taxis, taxi vans and sometimes even minivan shuttle service into Surat Thani and they can drop you off at the bus station. It isn’t a common thing for tourists to organize their transport independently though Surat Thani. So expect to get surrounded by touts trying to sell their service. Just ignore them and find an official taxi or minivan driver.

When you arrive in Surat Thani bus station be prepared because it quite literally the craziest bus terminal we’ve been through in Thailand. The touts will annoy you offering you various transport options. Again just ignore them and walk inside the terminal. There is booths displaying the names of what bus tickets they offer. If you cannot locate the booth, look for buses with Krabi written on the front and the ticket booth should be right in front of the bus.

We have also took buses through this station but to Phuket not to Krabi. It’s an experience that I would definitely recommend to any adventurous traveler. But while you would think this option would be the cheapest, it isn’t. Boat+bus combo tickets are always cheaper.

Flight Koh Samui – Krabi: advantages and disadvantages

From koh samui to krabi and back by intercity bus, transfer from koh samui  to krabi (or krabi – koh samui) – the best option.

  • Taxi transfer Krabi – Koh Samui and back – good variant!

At first glance, a ticket on the flight Koh Samui – Krabi or Krabi – Koh Samui is the simplest and most logical option, as in Krabi and Koh Samui, you can find a small, but quite modern own airport with good transport accessibility. Also this option is the most simple due to the fact that in contrast to the Krabi Province, most of resorts of which is still located on the mainland (including the city Krabi town and some of the popular resorts of Krabi province), Koh Samui is still an island, so logical to assume that only allows you to make the necessary flight distance using only one kind of transportation – airplane.

However in real practice, air travel between Koh Samui and Krabi do not enjoy high popularity tourists, no locals. If you will use placed below the search form flight at the best price, you can see for themselves that the cost of airfare Koh Samui – Krabi unreasonably high for such a small distance and is, at best, about $ 100 one way. It should be borne in mind that only one flight is accomplished in a day, and not throughout the year, but only during the high tourist season.

Therefore, it is possible to encounter a situation where you will be offered a flight with a long transfer in Bangkok (sometimes more than 12 hours), which makes a way to get from Krabi to Koh Samui or back at all meaningless, even if you have budget more big  than average traveler’s budget (option with a change in Bangkok is worth  more than the direct flight is about three times and even more).

In the article “Koh Samui Airport: a detailed review” I wrote that the main reason for the high cost of tickets  – is Bangkok Airways airline a monopoly on flights to Samui airport, which is a privately owned airline. Perhaps the ongoing construction of a new state airport on Samui, sooner or later the situation will improve in this matter, and fly from Krabi to Koh Samui and Koh Samui to Krabi Airport, one day we will not only quickly (less than an hour), but also inexpensive.

Aircraft Bangkok Air – a quick but expensive way to get from Koh Samui to Krabi

Since Koh Samui – is an island in the Gulf of Thailand, the way to get to Krabi necessarily involves the use of big (passenger and cargo) ferry to Koh Samui one of the local ferry companies. This variant of overcoming the distance between Krabi and Koh Samui today is not the most affordable (ticket price 500 baht) and, moreover, can not boast of a record speed. Bus travel between these resorts a little – once or twice a day depending on the time of year.

The advantages for some can be attributed only to the fact that most of the way it will be possible to overcome the big tour bus, where you can recline your seat and take a nap a few hours, and your oversized baggage will be placed not on the lap or in the legs, as it is sometimes necessary to do for travel on thai minibus, but in bulk luggage compartment. A major shortcoming of buses is not too good of their schedule. For example, riding a bus from Krabi Bus Station at 11.30 am on the island of Koh Samui you’ll get only after six hours.

Intercity bus from Koh Samui to Krabi and back

This means that, firstly, almost the entire day of rest will be spent on the road (although if you try it in the morning for a quick swim, you can succeed in Ao Nang), and secondly, to the island of Koh Samui your bus arrives almost to the beginning of twilight. But at this time, all route songthaew on Koh Samui – is no longer a relatively cheap way to travel between the island’s beaches and its administrative center.  After sunset this already not cheap transport, but transport with a contractual price (same expensive taxi). You can find more information in the article “Public transport in Samui: routes and prices”.

Search for a hotel on the island in the dark is also not a pleasant occupation, of course, if you do not take care about it in advance and did not find himself a cool hotel at minimal cost by using below the search form and hotel price comparisons in the same room in different systems booking. The second bus from Krabi to Koh Samui generally uses a night ferry to the island, therefore in the way  to Koh Samui you need to be more than 12 hours. With the latter option, you can save on one night in a hotel, but personally I’d rather sleep on the beach of Koh Samui, than in a chair of night ferry.

There is also the option of using no direct buses, but bus routes with a transfer, for example, in Surat Thani. In this case, the total price of the route Koh Samui – Krabi will be calculated as the cost of the ferry between Koh Samui and the mainland (150 baht), the cost of transfer from mainland pier to the bus station Surat Thani (70 km, or from 150 to 200 baht), as well as a bus or Mini Bus from Suratthani to Krabi (150-170 baht respectively). Total obtain at least 450 baht, but it is better to calculate the amount of not less than 500 baht. Make this way (or reverse route Krabi – Koh Samui) in general, not too hard, but in a situation where there is a more convenient, described below is an option, I would not :).

To date, one of the most convenient options that allow fast and high quality service, is accessible from Koh Samui to Krabi in the opposite direction – the use of an organized transfer, which is a trip on a comfortable Mini Bus by land and overcome the offshore section of the way by speedboat or ferry.

When you are on Koh Samui, it is easier and cheaper to contact the office of one of the ferry companies. This is due to the fact that this companies do not only carry out passenger transportation between the mainland, the island of Koh Samui and the other islands in the region, but also organize full transfers from Koh Samui to other resorts, including Phuket, Krabi, on the  of Phi Phi  islands and Ko Lanta . The cost of a transfer from ferry companies is often the lowest, but it is not their most important advantage over other companies, which also offers a shuttle service between Koh Samui and Krabi.

Modern transfer bus of Lomprayah company

Option to transfer the ferry companies, such as Lomprayah, allows you to quickly get to your destination with a minimum of transport changes. Often it is not just the way to Koh Samui pier to the bus station, but the full path from the door of the hotel in Koh Samui to the door of the hotel in Krabi or Ao Nang. Those. ultimately this is a very convenient and efficient for the money option. The cost of such a full transfer in 2015 is 400-450 thai baht for use on the offshore section of the way conventional ferry and between 550 baht to 600 when using high-speed boats.

In the case of transfer in the reverse direction, i.e. when you need to get from Krabi to Koh Samui , often have to resort to intermediaries and to pay, though quite a bit ($ 2-3). To avoid such overpayment is also possible, but for this you should at least not be afraid to speak English (thai english) on the phone with the ferry companies on Samui, which will need to explain what day you want to make a way, at what time and from which the hotel you will need to pick up.

If you do not want to talk on the phone, you can simply go to any tourist information office in Ao Nang or to the seller excursions on the street. Overpayments will be, as I have already said a little, but it is desirable to specify initially all the conditions and choose the options that transfer will provide again the company Lomprayah or transport company in the region with a good reputation under the name Joint Ticket (transfer of 450 Baht per Mini Bus + ferry or 600 THB + Mini Bus speed boat).

Comfortable speedy catamaran of Lomprayah company

When choosing a trip to Koh Samui or Krabi, always remember that to be ready for the trip you will need about an hour before mentioned in the brochure departure time. This is due to the fact that the local Mini Bus takes some time for a detour hotels and collect all the passengers. As a rule, this will remind you of the time of purchase the transfer. For example, paying shuttle Ao Nang – Koh Samui with departure at 11 am, for you zaedut by 10:30 to take a small private bus station in the area of Krabi Town.

Sometimes on the streets of resorts (as in Koh Samui and Krabi) you can find more attractive offers in terms of cost of transfers between these resorts. You not must think that it is fraudsters. But there are some unpleasant nuances that may be encountered: a long crossing, repeated change of transport in transit and the possibility of landing in the wrong place on arrival, where have to go on an expensive taxi to the hotel. If you are not too scary, you can save money and take the risk, but it is advisable to look for a pre least some information about the carrier in internet.

I personally have had the experience. when I wanted to get from Koh Samui to Krabi and used the services of local companies the transfer. As a result, I was taken to the bus station Krabi only late in the evening. After 8 hours on the road. In a way it was a lot of transplants, about an hour I spent at the bus station in Surat Thani and about 5 kilometers, I was forced to go to an open pick-up truck on the floor, along with backpacks and other travelers. The bus was old and broke down several times on the road. On the other hand, it was fun and unusual! 🙂

Taxi transfer Krabi – Koh Samui and back

Another option, which allows you to quickly get from Krabi to Koh Samui or to make the return journey – the use of a taxi transfer from the Kiwitaxi . Of course, this option is not the cheapest, but in some situations it is ideal for travelers. The fare on the modern car taxi between the resorts can be found at the link above. It is important to understand that unlike the flight ticket, several people (four or more) can be accommodated in the vehicle. This means that the price for each transfer of the passengers will be very attractive.

And if you add the travel speed, comfort, the ability to choose the car class, install child seats, card payment, etc., the option at all remarkable. If you want to get from Krabi to Koh Samui, I advise you to book a taxi transfer from Krabi only to the Donsak pier. Because makes no sense to overpay for the car will go to the island with you, and then will come back (at your expense).I wish you a quick and comfortable travel from Koh Samui to Krabi, and no less pleasant transfers, allowing quick and inexpensive to get from Krabi to Koh Samui!

It’s by far the fastest option on the route, and certainly the one to go for if there’s simply no time to waste before lazing on the sparkling sands of Chaweng Beach.

Kick back for 50 minutes on a flight between Krabi and Koh Samui to do this 124-mile trip in as little time as possible.

Of course, the added speed and comfort of a flight means you’ll pay extra for the luxury. In fact, hopping on a plane across to the island will usually leave you at least $80 lighter. Thankfully, Bangkok Airways – the only carrier running the route – have free checked bags (20kgs) as standard. What’s more, you can keep costs low by booking well in advance through ticketing services like 12Go.asia .

Bear in mind that there’s only a single flight per day. It’s usually wheels up at around 1.45pm, which means you won’t have to worry about getting to the airport super early. What’s more, the departure time makes it possible to connect through Krabi from the Andaman Islands of Phi Phi and Koh Lanta to catch a flight. Remember: The air link between Krabi and Koh Samui only runs during Thailand’s dry season. There are simply no planes going between May and late October.

Krabi to Koh Samui by bus and ferry

Krabi to Koh Samui by bus and ferry

Time – 4.5 to 7 hours, depending on your choice of ferry Price – $21-30 Comfort – 3/5

The combo of buses and ferries lets you stick to solid ground and wavy seas the whole way from Krabi to Koh Samui. It’s by far the most popular way to get from the port town to the paradise island. That’s not only because there are limited places on the single flight, but also because the cost of taking this route is just a fraction of a plane ticket – you’re looking at just over $20 on average!

You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to picking a company to go with. Perhaps the best-rated option is Lomprayah. They run large, air-conditioned VIP buses across to the far Thai Gulf coast, taking two hours. Then you get to hop on a fast catamaran, which goes between Tapee Pier in Surat Thani and Samui’s Nathon Pier in 55 minutes.

Seatran Discovery Seating

If you can, get the catamaran ferry that’s run by Lomprayah – they are the fastest and most comfortable boats on the route between Krabi and Koh Samui.

The next-fastest choice are the high-speed boats with Seatran Discovery. They have total travel times in the region of five hours. Finally, you’ve got the standard ferries operated by Phantip 1970 and Songserm. Those are the slowest of the lot and they don’t have same modern seating areas and facilities as their competitors. However, they will typically boast the cheapest tickets of all. Both of the slower options leave from Donsak Pier.

12Go is usually the best tool to use when planning a trip to Koh Samui from Krabi using a mix of buses and boats. It’s got a simple search tool that lets you compare the prices and services of all the various operators. You’ll also be able to add on transfers to the bus station from hotels in Ao Nang or Krabi Airport at just the click of a mouse.

Krabi to Koh Samui by private taxi and ferry

Krabi to Koh Samui by private taxi and ferry

Time – 3.5 to 4 hours Price – $215+ Comfort – 4/5

Don’t be put off by the soaring price tag – the rate for a taxi from Krabi to the piers of Donsak or Surat Thani is quoted for the whole vehicle. What’s more, book your ride through 12Go.asia , and you can score packages that include tickets for the ferry crossing over to Koh Samui. The upshot? This might be the way to go if you’re traveling as a family or a group and can split the cost between multiple passengers.

A private taxi might cost more, but you can share the fare with your travel group and enjoy extra comfort levels in air-conditioned vehicles en route.

One of the great bonuses of having your own driver and wheels for the trip overland to the gulf is that you can get a pickup pretty much anywhere in Krabi you choose. That’s perfect for anyone jetting into the runways of Krabi Airport. And it’s great if you’re staying out by the turquoise seas of Ao Nang Beach to the west of the town proper.

In addition to door or terminal collections, it’s possible to ask taxis to stop along the way. In fact, you’re allowed pitstops of up to 30 minutes, which means photo breaks beneath the karst mountains of the Than Bok Khorani National Park as you cruise out of Krabi, or lunches of coconuts and pad Thai along the 44 highway towards Surat Thani.

Thailand has two very different coastlines, and Krabi and Koh Samui offer a taste of both. Head through the wild jungles and rolling plantations of rubber trees that cover the Land of Smiles from west to east and you’ll be able to enjoy the delights of Chaweng Beach and authentic Bophut Village after around four hours of travel. Fly that way and you can do this trip in a mere 55 minutes. It’s up to you!

Krabi to Koh Samui FAQ

Certain bus and ferry combinations can help keep the outgoings around the $20 mark on the road from Krabi to Koh Samui. The best way to find them is to check out 12Go.asia . You just need to enter your travel dates and search. Viola: You get to compare all the offerings from different companies running minivans, VIP coaches, catamarans, and ferries on the route.

It’s possible to cruise over the Land of Smiles at 30,000 feet to smash this journey in less than an hour. That’s because Bangkok Airways run a daily flight between Krabi Airport and Koh Samui Airport. It departs at 1.45pm and arrives in Samui at 2.35pm. On the downside, this is the most expensive way to travel by a long shot. Moreover, flights only run during the high season months from November to May.

First, choose between air or land links. Flights take less time but are pricier, and there’s only a single departure each day. If you’re staying on solid ground, you’ll then need to settle on a package with a tour provider. Lomprayah’s VIP buses and catamaran boats are probably the most popular, but you can also book connections on high-speed ferries with Seatran Discovery, or slower normal ferries with Songserm. The whole lot can be compared using 12Go.asia’s online search portal .

That really depends on how you’re planning on going from the beaches of the Andaman Sea to the sands of the Thai Gulf. You can jet off from Krabi Airport and be touching down in Samui in under one hour if you travel by plane. Alternatively, overland links that combine minibuses, VIP coaches and ferries to the island’s various piers can take anywhere from four to seven hours.

There is no ferry all the way from Krabi to Koh Samui. The first step to getting on a boat to where you’re going will be a drive right across the middle of southern Thailand. It means crossing rural regions of palm jungles, karst mountains and rubber trees for around 120 minutes. Only then will you reach the pier. The crossing time from there depends on which ferry you’ve chosen. Lomprayah’s catamarans do it in about 55 minutes to 1.5 hours. Other boats can take two hours or more.

You sure can. Bangkok Airways have a monopoly on the route, but they still sell tickets for the relatively reasonable price of $80-100, including a single item of checked baggage per passenger. From runway to runway, the flight is about 55 minutes. Departures are in the early afternoon, meaning you’ll emerge from the arrival hall in Koh Samui around 4pm. Flights aren’t available in the low season, and it’s always wise to book in advance for the high season via 12Go.asia .

How to get from Krabi to Koh Samui in 2024

If you’re looking to travel from Krabi to Koh Samui , you will need to traverse the Malay Peninsula and cross from the west coast to its east coast of southern Thailand. As much as this sounds like an epic adventure, in reality, it’s quite a short and simple exercise.

Our local expert Rich, has shared everything he knows about making this journey so yours can be as painless as possible.

This page contains affiliate links. You can find our disclosure here .

How to book your minivan bus and ferry trip

Koh samui ferry tickets, the minivan journey, public bus to koh samui, private taxi services from krabi to koh samui, krabi to koh samui night ferry, flights from krabi to koh samui, from phi phi to ko samui, from koh lanta to koh samui, enjoy the journey.

At its narrowest point, the distance between the two coasts is a mere fifty kilometers. This narrow section is known as the Kra Isthmus, but to get to Samui Island, you will need to cross a little farther south than this, where the peninsula is wider – starting at Krabi Town.

A songthaew in Krabi

Krabi Province has long been a favorite amongst travelers to Thailand. With delightful destinations such as Phi Phi Island, Railay, Koh Lanta, and Ao Nang all within easy reach of one another, it’s easy to see why.

If you have been visiting any of these places, and are now looking to head east to the beaches of Koh Samui in the Chumphon Archipelago, let’s have a look at the transport options available to you.

Krabi Town is the main administrative hub for Krabi Province, and most likely, you will either start your journey here or pass through en route. If you are already in town, it’s easy. If not, then it’s still easy, but you may want to travel to Krabi Town a day in advance to break up your travel times a little.

Travel by Minivan and Ferry

Perhaps the most common way to travel across to the east coast is in the ubiquitous tourist minivan, coupled with a ferry ride.

The mini van, is a popular public transportation choice in Asia

The vast minivan network is always an option.

To book your minivan to Koh Samui, you can have a chat with any of the small travel and tour agencies found along the roadside in any of the major tourist destinations within Thailand to buy tickets.

Alternatively, you can book tickets in advance. We recommend 12Go.com who list the largest range of transport options in Asia.

Most point-to-point minivan and ferry tickets will usually include a pick-up directly from your hotel, so there’s no need to traipse across town with your luggage or pay for a taxis.

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second largest island, so having a booking that takes you all the way to your hotel is the most convenient option, rather than being left to your own devices at Donsak Pier or your point of arrival on Koh Samui.

When booking, ask where the drop-off point in Koh Samui will be, will you be dropped at your new hotel? This may cost a little extra, but it will save the headache of trying to arrange transport when you arrive at Na Thon Pier.

There are a few options for ferry transfers when it comes to this leg of the trip.

  • The fastest option is the Lomprayah ferry. These high-speed ferries are passenger only and are the more expensive of the ferry options.
  • The boats operated by Seatran Discovery and Raja ferry companies are slower and ticket prices are cheaper. These ferries also take vehicles on board.

The beginnings of these minivan journeys can seem a little chaotic to the uninitiated – but relax, the driver knows where you are going, and you will get there.

Occasionally, the van which picks you up at your hotel may not be the vehicle in which you traverse the peninsula – they may pick people up from several hotels, and then transfer everyone to a different minivan for the rest of the journey.

The drive across to the other side will take a little under 3 hours.

When you reach the other coastline, you will find yourself two hundred kilometers to the north-east at Donsak Pier, in Surat Thani Province.

sea port of seatran ferry terminal a pier koh samui, surat thani province, thailand travel

You just need to cross seventy kilometers of ocean, and you will be on Koh Samui. The door-to-door minivan service will also include the car-ferry.

If the ferry is very busy, take a photo of your minivan’s number plate, so you ensure you get back to the correct one when you arrive at the pier in Samui.

There is also a public bus service which runs between Krabi Town and Koh Samui. These are usually larger buses rather than minivans that depart from Krabi Bus Terminal and include the ferry ticket.

Some of the larger buses will also offer a pick-up from Ao Nang, the closest tourist area to Krabi Town.

The ticket price should be a little lower than the tourist minibuses, but be aware that once you arrive at the pier in Koh Samui, you will then need to arrange transportation to your hotel. This will probably involve haggling with a taxi or tuk-tuk driver, and unless you speak Thai, you may struggle to get the price down.

If you are travelling in a group, or are less concerned about your budget, then there is also the option of a private transfer. These more spacious and luxurious vehicles will offer a more comfortable journey, but do come with a slightly higher price tag.

Private transfers give you the benefit of flexibility – you can leave at a time that suits you, just make sure your departure time also fits with the ferry schedule from Donsak Pier.

With your own driver, you can also choose to stop wherever and whenever you please. You will also be picked up from your hotel, so there is no need to make your own way to the bus station.

Different vehicles will be available to suit the size of your party. The drawback with the private transfer is that often they will only take you as far as Donsak Pier, make sure you ask when you are booking. If they only drop you at the ferry, you might like to arrange your transfer on arrival to your hotel before you travel. Most hotels will do this for you.

For the more intrepid, or those on a shoestring budget, there is also a night ferry to Koh Samui. The night ferry leaves from Surat Thani Night Boat Pier rather than from Donsak Pier, and arrives in Nathon, on the west coast of Koh Samui.

Although this is not the most luxurious option, it can be the cheapest way, as besides a cheaper ticket, you will also save money on a night’s accommodation. Another benefit of the night ferry is that it also gives you more daylight for exploring Thai culture, rather than sitting on a bus in the midday heat.

The night ferries are for the most adventurous, they are basic wooden vessels, and you will sleep on the top deck.

For this night ferry, you can leave Krabi much later than with the other options, and you can travel to Surat Thani town by public bus or minivan too. The night ferry leaves at 11:00 pm and will arrive at Nathon pier at 5:30 am.

They have recently relaunched some direct flights between Krabi International Airport and Koh Samui Airport; the journey is under one hour and will cost about $100.

Koh Samui Airport

At 3 to 4 times the price of the van and ferry combo it you do need to factor in getting and from the airports and arriving at least 60 minutes before your flight departure so the whole trip could take up to 3 hours door to door.

Check the Bangkok Airways website, as they are the owners and sole operators of flights from Samui International Airport.

Getting to Krabi Town

If you are starting your journey from elsewhere in Krabi Province, the journey to Samui is still pretty straightforward.

From Phi Phi, you will first need to get a ferry across to Krabi Town. The ferries run regularly every day, but ensure your ferry time syncs with your bus departure time from Krabi Town.

From Koh Lanta, you can easily get a transfer to Krabi Town via road and car-ferry. Travel time from Lanta to Krabi Town is around 90 minutes in total.

From Railay to Ko Samui

If you are on Railay, then you will need to jump in a long-tail boat to get back to Ao Nang or Krabi Town, before heading to the departure point for your vehicle to Samui.

While you can travel from these other Krabi locations to Samui in one day, some people prefer to travel into Krabi Town the day before to break the trip up a little. This is definitely a good idea if you plan on hitting the road early to reach Samui in time for a sunset gin & tonic.

So, while travelling coast-to-coast in Thailand is not the epic journey it can be in other countries, it’s a great way to get out of the prime tourist locations and watch rural Thailand slide by the windows. Charge your devices, put some tunes on, and watch as Krabi’s dramatic limestone karsts are slowly replaced by rubber and coconut plantations as you travel east. Enjoy the journey, but enjoy the destination more…

Ko Samui to Krabi

Top airline flying from krabi to koh samui.

On a 45 mins flight to Koh Samui from Bangkok we were served delicious shrimp pad thai and hot tea. The flight crew did an awesome job serving a full flight.

Seats are tight and leg room so small. We had deep impressions under kneecap from the seat in front. A sign that Bangkok Airways is fully aware how small it is built is the cutout in the table. Very uncomfortable for people in size 1.80 m or more.

This is my 2nd flight with this airline. Service is very good. I was surprised they served a meal on such a short flight. The airplane landed so smooth that most people were unaware the plane had just landed. About half of the people on board applauded.

The staff were helpful and very pleasant. The food is tasty and there’s plenty of water provided. Flights are well air conditioned.

The food was inedible- The rice was hard as a rock The chicken was hard and could not chew Horrible meal. Don’t even serve it. It was an insult to think that you would have even served it.

I fly Bangkok Air regularly. Could say I am loyal to their airlines and program. The only two comments of critique I could offer is (1) using the credits from accumulated miles is not as streamlines as some of the other airlines programs I am or have been a member of... and have lost opportunity to use them before expiration. (2) Sometimes, the plane is boarded / un-boarded with a service bus that has to navigate the airport and adds unwelcomed overhead time (especially during de-boarding). If have checked luggage this is transparent; if only have carry-on will slow your departure from Suvarnabhumi by ~20 minutes or more. Otherwise, a fine airline.

Should be better if they provide more decent snacks. Also my flight took off was delayed by 15 minutes. I'd like them to improve to more punctual timing.

Bangkok Air has been hit with the challenge of flying during COVID like everyone else. Still, they are early to get started again and offer normal services when possible. It is nice to have a lounge for all passengers vs. going to gate and sitting to stare out at planes.

‘The White Lotus’ Thailand is next. These hotels do it on a budget.

HBO’s hottest hotel group, “The White Lotus,” is expanding to Thailand — on screen at least. The location for season 3 has been confirmed , and Bloomberg reported in January that loose-lipped industry insiders say filming is taking place at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui , the Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas and a still-undisclosed hotel in Bangkok. The network has stayed quiet on specific hotels.

The news is a boon for Four Seasons and the Thailand-based Anantara group; the show’s previous two seasons, set in Hawaii and Sicily , have proved to turbocharge travelers’ interest in their already popular respective locales. After the seasons aired, bookings soared at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and the Four Seasons’ San Domenico Palace in Taormina.

It’s safe to say that these Thai resorts can expect a similar uptick in reservations after season 3 premieres in 2025. But living out the White Lotus fantasy isn’t within every traveler’s reach. One night at the Four Seasons in Koh Samui will cost you at least $1,400. And while at $660 per night, starting rates at the Anantara in Phuket are a fair bit lower — they’re still not exactly a steal for anyone but the most deep-pocketed visitors.

Nightly rates at Thailand’s big-brand luxury resorts can often be on par with those in Europe or the United States, but a burgeoning ecosystem of local hospitality groups and independently owned hotels offers many of the same five-star perks at a fraction of the price. For about $180, the average rate of a night in a three-star hotel room in Miami Beach, you can book a villa with a private pool and round-the-clock service on the beach in Koh Samui.

Here are six Thailand beach retreats offering five-star luxury on a Best Western budget.

Meliá Koh Samui

On palm-pinned Choeng Mon Beach, a few bays east of the Four Seasons Koh Samui, sits the first Thai outpost of Spanish hotel brand Meliá . Still fresh from its opening in 2020, this family-friendly resort aims for midmarket rather than high-end, but that doesn’t make it any less worthy of its five-star label. Rooms, starting at $181 per night, riff on the island’s maritime past with nautical rope decor and licks of ocean-blue, while its top-level suites occupy reclaimed teakwood barges. Even the standard rooms open to a bubble bath on their balcony, and suites with either a private pool or direct access to a more than 2,200-foot pool that meanders through the resort’s manicured tropical gardens have the option to have breakfast delivered in a floating basket (if that’s your thing).

The Surin, Phuket

Rumors circulated that Amanpuri, one of Phuket’s ritziest beach retreats, would be one of the film sets for the third season of “The White Lotus.” They were ultimately dispelled, but the resort remains a firm favorite with wealthy travelers. With rates often shooting to well over $1500 per night, this is territory for the privileged few — but insiders know that the Surin next door offers similar perks and the same palm-tufted setting at a fraction of the cost. This beachfront spot is the only resort offering access to Amanpuri’s semiprivate Pansea Beach, one of Phuket’s prettiest. Pitched up among the treetops, the Surin’s airy deluxe cottages start at $220 per night and overlook the Andaman Sea from their snug, parasol-shaded balconies. The resort is part of White Lotus lore, too: it was here that creator Mike White first hinted at Thailand being the show’s next location.

Cape Kudu, Koh Yao Noi

A short speedboat-hop from Phuket, the island of Koh Yao Noi feels like a trip back in time. Its palm-fringed beaches remain blissfully free of tourist crowds, and sleepy coconut farms — not shopping malls or amusement parks — still cover most of its jungled inland. Cape Kudu , on the sunrise-facing east coast, is one of the island’s chicest places to stay. Its breezy rooms and villas come furnished with lots of linen, sun-bleached woods and wickerwork; a similarly laid-back theme dresses the spa, restaurant and beanbag-lined infinity pool. With low-season rates from May to October starting at $122 per night, this small resort offers excellent bang for your baht. And those dazzling views over Phang Nga Bay’s dramatic karst formations? They’re free.

The Sarojin, Khao Lak

This resort in the beachside holiday hub of Khao Lak, about an hour north of Phuket, delivers a textbook example of classic Thai hospitality — fresh orchids, jasmine-scented towels and lilting sawatdi ka, or hello, greetings included. The Sarojin ’s rooms are teakwood-clad wonders with spalike bathrooms and heaps of private space, but you’ll probably spend more time in one of the pool cabanas, which are lined with gauzy curtains billowing in the breeze. A powder-sugar beach stretches out in front and is a jumping-off point for kayak trips and sailings on the resort’s charter yacht, which can end with candlelit dinners on a nearby private islet. Rates for garden views start at $180 per night and include leisurely all-day breakfast with sparkling wine served until 6 p.m.

The ShellSea, Krabi

From taxis to cocktails, prices on Thailand’s most popular islands are generally much higher than on the mainland. The beaches, however, can be equally pretty — which makes booking a seafront resort ashore a smart way to cut holiday costs (additionally, you’ll save on boat transfers and plane tickets — flights to Thailand’s island destinations tend to be pricey). One of southern Thailand’s most popular hideouts is Krabi, a string of honey-hued beaches and jungle-cloaked karst formations. The ShellSea resort, a ten-minute drive from postcard-pretty Ao Nang beach, makes for a plush base with suites from $120 per night, a spa and three swimming pools. A hammock-lined private beach hugs part of the resort’s oceanfront, while island-hopping day trips can take you to Phang Nga Bay’s prettiest stretches of sand.

SAii Koh Samui Choengmon

While Koh Samui’s three-mile Chaweng Beach, sits just ten minutes from its doorstep, SAii Koh Samui Choengmon ’s perch on little-developed Hanuman Bay feels a world away from the crowds. Its most affordable room will set you back about $170, but the amenities are anything but cheap. At this all-villa resort, even the entry-level digs open to a generously sized sun deck and private pool, have a tropic-tinged bathroom with rain shower and include bespoke bathroom amenities mixed with your preferred scents. Other perks include complimentary yoga classes every morning, and a pick-and-mix of free snacks to bring back to your room.
