With flourishing reefs, big schools of tropical fish, turtles, stingrays, occasional mantas, and whale sharks sightings, Sharm el Sheikh is an underwater paradise. To find the most vibrant corals and exciting sea life, here we provide you with a list of the best spots to snorkel in Sharm el Sheikh, both shore and boat-accessible locations.

This diverse coral garden can be found along the Al Montazah coastline, between the Albatros Palace Sharm (ex Grand Cyrene and Melia Sharm) and Sunrise Remal Beach (ex Melia Sinai, Melton Beach) resorts. Both hotels provide access through a jetty.

The water is deeper on the Albatros’ side, but there is a shallow area in front of the Remal Beach. Here, you find a nice lagoon with sandy bottom where you can see many playful fish and sometimes turtles! The bottom of the lagoon drops into greater depths, where you can see gorgonian corals if the visibility is good (they are approximately at 18-20 m).

If you leave the sandy lagoon and swim alongside the reef, you will reach the drop-off at the corner. This area is recommended for advanced snorkelers only as the water is deep and the current can be strong, but this is where you can see bigger fish, sometimes even manta rays or a whale shark.

stunning coral wall in Ras Nasrani

Snorkeling at the Ras Nasrani offers the best shore snorkeling in Sharm el Sheikh: you can observe here extensive coral colonies that give home to thousands of fish, including shoals of sergeant majors, surgeonfish, scorpionfish, crocodile fish, and lionfish. Blue spotted ribbontail rays and eagle rays are also often seen here.

The Ras Ghamila dive and snorkel site is an extensive reef plateau covered with stony and soft corals. For snorkeling, it is accessible through the Coral Sea Sensatori Resort’s jetty and through the deserted sandy beach next to the resort’s area.

Ras Ghamila - Montazah Diving Map and images about the sea life

Primarily, it is a diving site, but if you access it from the Sensatori Resort, you will swim above the reef’s shallower part, where you can see a vibrant, aquarium-like coral garden.

healthy reef - Ras Ghamila

We were impressed by the underwater landscape here that features coral heads, pinnacles, and small caverns surrounded by a wide selection of Red Sea reef fish . Big school of bannerfish, butterfly fish, and of course clownfish, sergeant major fish, surgeon and parrotfish, hawkfish, and pufferfish are also around. Moreover, you can expect to see turtles, eagle rays and fantail rays, crocodilefish, and also lionfish! Those who love to look for miniature sea creatures can find some nudibranchs and sea worms on the corals.

green beacon - Ras Ghamila

Note that the current gets powerful as you pass the Sensatori’s beachfront and swim towards the green beacon, which marks the end of the site. Pay attention to the current and turn back before you drift away. If you can’t return to the jetty, leave the water by swimming through the reef plate.

Named after Bob Johson underwater cameraman who worked in this region for many years, Ras Bob is an easy snorkeling and diving place on the right of Melton Beach Resort’s floating platform. This site is sheltered from wind and waves and has no strong currents, so it is beginner-friendly.

snorkeling and diving boats at Ras Bob

Although the reef is not as colorful as the nearby Ras Nasrani, it is still a nice place for novice snorkelers and beginner divers. Anemonefish, banner and butterflyfish, parrotfish, crocodile fish, rainbow wrasses, blue spotted and eagle rays are the main species you can see here.

Ras Bob snorkeling map

If you are looking for the most beginner-friendly Sharm el Sheikh snorkeling spot, look no further than Faraana Bay. This sheltered bay is situated in the Hadaba suburb, on the southernmost side of Sharm el-Sheikh, and is famous for its jaw-dropping views and shallow, current-free reefs.

El Faraana Bay - Ras Um Sid

There are three resorts in the bay; either you choose, you will have easy access to this snorkel site: Faraana Reef Resort and Reef Oasis Resort have a jetty installed over the reef, while the Jaz Fanara Resort provides shore access through a sandy beach.

Those staying in the onsite resorts can access the bay from El Fanar Beach or by boat. Faraana Bay provides access to three further snorkeling sites: Ras Um Sid, Temple Reef, and Ras Katy. (Find more information below)

Ras Um Sid is a teeming coral garden with a steep wall on the left tip of Faraana Bay, in front of El Fanar Beach.

split photo about Ras Um Sid Lighthouse and the corals

Thanks to the constant nutrient-rich currents, the reef is blooming here; you will be amazed by the amount of fish and the abundance of corals when snorkeling here! This site is a good observatory spot for manta rays and whale sharks during the summer.

You can get to Ras Um Sid if you stay in one of the neighboring resorts (Jaz Fanara provides the easiest access), or through the El Fanar Beach (there is 150 EGP (€5 ) admission fee per person to enter).

With its unique topography, the Temple Reef is one of the area’s most exciting sites. It consists of massive pinnacles that make it look like an underwater temple.

reef fish at Temple Reef

The reef is in the middle of Faraana Bay, about 300 m from the shore. You can access it by boat or by staying in one of the bay’s hotels.

Although the bottom is ~18 m deep, the tops of the pinnacles are closer to the surface, so this site is enjoyable for snorkelers too., While swimming over the pinnacles, you can nicely observe how thousands of fish (mainly sea goldies) are circling around the towers. The nearby sandy lagoons attract blue-spotted and eagle rays too.

Feather Starfish on the coral at Temple Reef

An interesting site suitable for beginner divers and snorkelers at all levels, Ras Katy is a shallow, wide reef plate with tower-like underwater pinnacles. It is situated on the right of Faraana Bay and accessible from the Faraana Reef Resort’s jetty or through the Ras Katy public beach, which is behind the Zeid Ibn Haretha Road villa area.

underwater life at Ras Katy

The underwater landscape features various Red Sea corals, including rare blue corals. Schools of reef fish, such as sergeant majors, bannerfish are common here, as well as parrotfish, lionfish, butterflyfish, triggerfish and surgeonfish. We also saw eagle rays, blue spotted rays, octopus and moray eels here.

This is a popular spot for glass bottom boats; be careful when snorkeling here as these boats come very close to the reef and don’t respect snorkelers.

The Ras Mohammed National Park is a must-visit to find exceptional snorkeling in Sharm el Sheikh. It is the first national Park in Egypt, covering an area of 480 sq km, including the region’s most preserved reefs, mangrove forests, sand dunes, mountainous areas, and coastal mud plains. The park is a critical habitat for fish and bird species and also an important nesting ground for Red Sea turtles .

To enjoy discovering this spectacular scenery and unique flora and fauna, you can get to the park by land or sea. Tours are available daily. It takes about two hours to reach the reserve from Sharm el Sheikh. The park’s main snorkeling sites are Anemone City, Jackfish Alley, and Seven Pools Reef.

Blackmouth sea cucumber and fish

The reefs of Tiran Island showcase the most famous snorkeling sites in Sharm el Sheikh. This crescent-shaped island in the Straits of Tiran forms four reef systems: the Gordon, Thomas, Jackson, and Woodhouse Reefs.

Sharm El Sheikh coastline and Tiran Island

Located in the strait, which is more than 1800 m deep, the island’s reefs constantly receive fresh, deep-sea water, allowing marine life to thrive; you will find incredible underwater scenery here.

Gordon Reef is the most suitable for snorkelers, where you can swim above a shallow (3-20 m) plateau and sandy lagoons. Tiran Island is about 1-hour boat ride away from Sharm.

There is a wide variety of snorkeling excursions available in Sharm el Sheikh. Most hotels have a tour desk where you can sign up for excursions. Also, you can make a reservation through tour agencies. The latest experience shows that it is worth pre-booking tours online to avoid the hassle of negotiating the price on the site (which is a common practice in Egypt).

We recommend the following snorkeling excursions:

Ras Mohammed Trip : sail from Sharm El Sheikh to Ras Mohamed National Park where you can enjoy swimming in the clearest blue waters and above the finest coral gardens of the Red Sea.

Tiran Island Snorkeling Cruise : spend a day on a comfortable boat cruising around Tiran Island and explore three fantastic snorkeling spots.

Dahab Day Trip : since Sharm el Sheikh is not so far from Dahab, tours are available to the finest Dahab snorkeling spots too. On this full-day excursion, you can discover the Blue Hole and ride a camel to the Abu Galum Reserve.

Our favorite time to visit Sharm el Sheikh is either the late spring-early summer or the late fall months (from mid-May till mid-June or from late September till mid-November).

Sharm el Sheikh has a subtropical desert climate with dry, hot summers and mild winters. The consistently warm air and sea temperatures make it a year-round destination; however, some periods are more favorable than others.

Faraana Bay Beach - perfect weather and calm water in October

The weather turns hot during summer, bringing temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius. This might be good for heat lovers but can be challenging for those who can’t stand such high temperatures. The air temperatures are around 23/24 °C (73/75 °F), while the sea is between 21-23 °C (69.8-73.4 °F) during winter. With temperatures like this, it is an ideal winter snorkeling destination, but we think that the water is a bit chilly for long snorkeling sessions.

The reason why we recommend coming in the shoulder seasons (late spring-early summer and in fall) is that these periods bring the most comfortable conditions: the sea is warm enough (25-27 °C/77-80.6 °F), the air is warm but not too hot, there is plenty of sunshine to enjoy and very low risk of rain.

The aquatic life in Sharm el Sheikh is very rich. Thanks to the region’s underwater topography and geographic features, the area receives nutrient-rich deep-sea currents. Therefore, the reefs here are the most beautiful coral reefs in the Red Sea . These fringing and hermatypic-type reefs provide a home to a diverse range of marine life, including over 220 coral and 1000 reef fish species, invertebrates, crustaceans, marine mammals, and pelagic fish.

Hawksbill sea turtle in Ras Nasrani

Species you can see while snorkeling:

  • Reef fish (clownfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, crocodile fish, parrotfish, damselfish, scorpionfish, stonefish, lionfish, sea goldies, napoleon wrasse, trumpetfish, boxfish, pufferfish, etc…)
  • Hawksbill Sea Turtle
  • Blue Spotted Ribbon Tail Ray
  • Electric Ray
  • Giant Sea Clams
  • Sea urchins
  • Whitetips reef shark
  • Whale Shark

Sharm el Sheikh Snorkeling Hotels We Recommend

Choosing the right place to stay is a crucial part of the vacation planning . It takes a lot of time and energy to read reviews and find a hotel that will meet your needs, especially if you have special expectations, such as a good house reef. This Sharm el Sheikh best snorkeling hotels list includes our favorite five resorts where you can reach the best sites easily from the shore.

The Coral Sea Sensatori 5* is a modern hotel that meets European standards. Staying here provides you easy access to the Ras Ghamila beautiful reefs through the hotel’s own floating jetty.

Coral Sea Sensatori Resort garden area

Sensatori has a huge, well-kept garden, a promenade, and a bazaar area where you can go for nice evening walks. Offering fantastic food choices in six restaurants and top-notch service provided by professional, English-speaking staff, this resort is one of the best in the Al Montazah suburb.

For more info, read our Coral Sea Sensatori Resort snorkeling post.

A popular choice among European and American travelers, the Baron Resort 5* is a comfortable and relaxing hotel with excellent service, friendly staff, and great activities for adults and children. The buildings are in a lovely tropical garden, surrounded by hundreds of palm trees and waterfalls.

Baron Resort - Sunset

The water is relatively shallow in front of the hotel’s jetty with a stunning house reef. Should this not satisfy you, two prime snorkeling sites are within short distance: the Ras Ghamila on the left and the Ras Nasrani on the right.

With direct access to the Ras Bob and Ras Nasrani reefs, the Pickalbatros Palace 5* (ex Cyrene Grand) is a lovely, recently renovated hotel. It features a nice garden and an excellent view of the Tiran Island.

Pickalbatros Palace - Sharm el Sheikh

This resort is recommended for those who seek a good value for money deal. We stayed in the Albatoros Palace two times and were satisfied with it. We loved that we could snorkel for long hours along the shoreline and have easy access to the best snorkeling spots in Sharm el Sheikh, including the Ras Nasrani and Ras Bob reefs.

The Coral Beach Montazah Resort 4* is a budget-friendly Egyptian-style hotel in the middle of the Montazah area. You can enter the water directly from the hotel’s jetty and find yourself in a picturesque coral garden. Swimming to the right, you can discover the Ras Nasrani. On the left side, you can explore Ras Ghamila.

jetty at Coral Beach Montazah Resort

Located in Hadaba-El Fanar, directly at Ras Um Sid dive and snorkel site, the Jaz Fanara Resort and Residence 4* is definitely one of the best places to stay if you are looking for prime snorkeling in Sharm el Sheikh.

Jaz Fanara Resort pool area

This resort has wonderful views and a family-friendly atmosphere. Staying here offers a fantastic snorkeling experience both for beginners and advanced snorkelers, as there are shallow and deeper areas to explore.

The Reef Oasis Beach Resort 4* lies in the middle of Fanara Bay, next to the Jaz Fanara. There is easy snorkeling right from the shore, while you can reach the Ras Um Sid, and also the Ras Kathy and Temple reefs from here. This is an excellent choice for families and couples who wish to enjoy the Red Sea’s beautiful marine life while staying in a top-rated all-inclusive hotel.

Snorkel fins and a bag on the beach

Once you have decided to book your trip to Sharm el Sheikh, it is time to pack your bags! Here’s a list of what items we recommend bringing:

  • Snorkeling gear : Although it is possible to rent snorkel gear at most hotels and even the tours provide it, the best is to bring your own for hygiene reasons.
  • Sun protection clothing and sunscreen : UV radiation is extreme in Egypt. To avoid sunburn, wear a rash guard when snorkeling and apply reef-safe sunscreen on areas not covered by UV protective clothing.
  • Waterproof camera : you will discover the world’s finest coral gardens, so it would be a shame not to capture this beauty; make sure to pack your snorkeling camera or GoPro.
  • Snorkel bag/dry bag : an essential accessory to keep your belongings in one place and protect them from water.

Sharm El Sheikh: Snorkeling Guide

Originally posted on October 23, 2019 @ 10:33 am

If you want to experience the stunning underwater world of Sharm El Sheikh snorkeling, this guide is for you.

Not all of the beaches provide a great snorkeling experience, and some sites can only be reached by boat.

I’m a German expat and scuba diver and I’ve been living in Sinai since 2016.

I’m sure I can provide you with some great tips and advice that will make your snorkeling holiday in Sharm El-Sheikh a fantastic one.

Besides listing all of the best Sharm El Sheikh snorkeling spots , I will also help you with some snorkeling equipment advice as well as some rules on how to act responsibly underwater and snorkel safely .

Let’s get right to it, shall we?

The correct behavior underwater

Many people who are new to the underwater world are not aware of the impact they have on marine life, so I’d like to take a minute to explain.

There are a few things you should know about how to behave underwater in order not to harm the marine life and corals.

I didn’t know most of this before I became a scuba diver and moved to Egypt.

As you can see in the photo, I try to pick up any plastic I find underwater – would be great for you to do the same!

There’s no shame in not knowing, but once you do know, please make sure you really follow this advice.

We all want to enjoy the Red Sea underwater world as long as possible so we all need to contribute to its health.

  • Don’t walk on the reef table. The corals are alive and are harmed by walking on them. It may also be dangerous for you as you might step on sea urchins or similar dangerous things.
  • Don’t touch ANYTHING underwater. Whether it’s corals or fish or anything else. Watch, but don’t touch.
  • Only go in the water with reef-safe sunscreen. Regular sunscreen harms corals. You can see a recommended product in my equipment recommendations.  Yes, it is more expensive than regular sunscreen, but it’s not only better for your skin thanks to less (or no) chemicals, you also have a clear conscience and know that you’re not contributing to destroying the environment.
  • If you see bigger sea creatures like turtles or dolphins, which happens a lot around the waters of Sharm El Sheikh, don’t chase them . Admire them from a distance and be respectful, you’re a guest in their “house”, not the other way around.
  • Never ever feed the fish. Over time, they become dependent on humans and forget how to feed themselves which has detrimental effects on the biological balance of the system.

The Best Sharm El Sheikh Snorkeling Spots

Now that we’ve established some ground rules and know how to be respectful visitors of the underwater world, let’s get to the fun part.

Where are the best snorkeling spots in and around Sharm El-Sheikh?

Snorkeling the Straits of Tiran

The straits of Tiran consist of 4 reefs and make for some of the most amazing snorkeling in the entire Red Sea.

They absolutely burst with life and have stunning coral gardens. You don’t even know where to look first.

Beware of the currents though, they can get quite strong. Always follow the instructions of your guides.

  • Gordon Reef:

Gordon Reef is the most southerly of the 4 reefs.

From the surface, you can see it easily because this is where the wreck of Lovilla sunk and you see parts of the remains.

Gordon Reef teems with hard and soft corals and rich fauna. Fire corals are common as well here though, so pay attention not to accidentally touch them.

  • Jackson Reef:

Similar to Gordon Reef, Jackson Reef is landmarked by a wreck – the cargo ship Lara which sunk here in 1985.

Jackson is one of the best dive sites in the entire world, and you will notice this instantly even if you’re just snorkeling.

It’s a fantastic site to spot pelagic predators (like white tip reef sharks and hammerheads) and majestic sea turtles. Like in all snorkeling sites of Tiran, be aware of strong currents and fire corals here as well.

  • Laguna Reef:

Laguna is the calmest and most sheltered place in the Straits of Tiran which is perfect if you’re a beginner snorkeler as the currents in the Red Sea can get quite rough sometimes.

It’s a great place for your boat to stop for lunch and admire the azure waters.

Expect to see colorful hard and soft corals as well as plenty of reef fish under the surface.

Sharm El-Sheikh: Snorkeling at Ras Nasrani

Unlike most other snorkeling spots, this site can be reached by land.

The long, beautiful beach about 10km north of Na’ama Bay is a perfect spot to spend the day and dip in the water every now and then.

You will see colonies of massive pore coral heads and Tridacna shells cluster in huge numbers here.

With plenty of reef fish around, you might also get lucky and spot some larger predators.

Take care of the currents which tend to flow in the direction of the headland where they often gather momentum.

Snorkeling at Far Garden

Located at the northernmost tip of a large bay where the Hyatt hotel is situated, this snorkeling spot is another great one to explore without having to go on an all-day boat trip.

Four large pinnacles just break the surface a few metres from the reef. The abundance of hard corals really earns this spot the name “garden”.

You will see no less than 30 species of hard and soft corals which attract huge schools of multicolored reef fish.

You might very well be completely surrounded by anthias, fusiliers, or sergeant majors at times.

Snorkeling at Near Garden

Between the Sofitel and the Hyatt hotel just north of Na’ama Bay lies Near Garden, one of the busiest sites for snorkelers.

There are often lots of glass-bottom boats which you should be careful to avoid.

Just a few minutes by boat and you arrive at this snorkeling spot which expects you with a myriad of hard and soft corals on the sandy bottom.

By the tip of the reef, you’ll find a series of 4 pinnacles running in a downwards sloping line that looks like an underwater ridge.

At Near Garden, you will encounter napoleonfish, trigger fish, butterfly fish and the occasional eagle ray. Look out for blue-spotted stingrays on the sandy plateu as well!

Snorkeling at Ras Umm Sid

Ras Umm Sid is the most famous local dive site in Sharm and a paradise for snorkelers like you as well.

It’s renowned for the extraordinary fan coral forest which only starts at around 15 meters, unfortunately, so you will have to admire those from pictures.

Or maybe it’s time to finally do your scuba diving course? 🙂

Either way, Ras Umm Sid will be more than enjoyable with just a mask and fins as well.

Expect to be blown away by the extremely vibrant reef. You’ll probably see big schools of butterfly fish close to the reef, and parrot fish, lionfish, moray eels, schools of anthias and some big Napoleon fish.

Every once in a while you might even spot a shark. Most likely you get to see barracudas, snappers, and jacks, too.

Snorkeling at Ras Mohammed National Park

The national park of Ras Mohammed is extra-well taken care of environmentally and therefore offers some of the best Sharm El Sheikh snorkeling spots.

There are 3 sites within this stunning area that are great for you to explore while snorkeling:

  • Marsa Ghozlani:

This one is definitely a favorite site of snorkelers as it’s easy to moor up and well protected from rough sea conditions.

It’s also accessible by land from within the national park, a glorious beach lets you enter the magnificent underwater world here.

Marsa Ghozlani features a reef brimming with hard corals. Surgeonfish roam around the reef plateau leading to a gentle slope that descends to around 4-5 meters.

  • Ras Ghozlani:

The dive and snorkeling site of Ras Ghozlani is a predominantly sandy area with stunning coral heads, stingrays, torpedo rays and butterflyfish.

It’s rather rarely visited and therefore particularly interesting for both the excellently preserved madrepores and the rich reef fauna.

You may explore the external and internal sides of the cape. On the eastern side, you’ll see many large table corals and blue-spotted stingrays resting on the floor.

  • Jackfish Alley:

Jackfish Alley is famous for its underwater landscape brimming with life.

The name Jackfish Alley is owed to the sandy “road” at a depth of about 20 meters at the foot of the reef wall, where plenty of jackfish live.

You can snorkel just a few meters from the reef and explore the vibrant underwater scenery that includes a beautiful coral garden as well as plenty of spy reef fish and lionfish living in caves that come out to hunt in the afternoon.

You’ll also most likely see blue-spotted stingrays and, if you’re lucky, the occasional manta ray.

I hope my Sharm El Sheikh snorkeling guide was helpful for you.

If you are thinking about doing your scuba diving certification, you should also check out my scuba diving guide to Sharm El-Sheikh to find out which are the best dive sites in the area, what’s the best time to go scuba diving, dive centre recommendations, etc.

You should also do a day-trip to Dahab , a small Bedouin village that isn’t as touristy as Sharm. It has a very unique flair and you can easily go snorkeling from the shore there.

Dahab has some amazing dive and snorkel sites , including the famous Blue Hole.

It is safer, but no less interesting, since some of the coral reefs in the park are located close to the coast and not at great depths, so you can enjoy snorkelling, and if you get tired, you always have the opportunity to go out into shallow water and relax.

Dangerous inhabitants of the Red Sea

When snorkelling in the sea, always be aware of the dangerous inhabitants of the Red Sea that you may encounter, do not touch them and they will not harm you. Please check the list of potentially dangerous creatures in the Red Sea before diving or snorkeling. Since sharks can sometimes be seen in the vicinity of Ras Mohammed National Park , we recommend that you learn some facts about the Red Sea shark. The Riviera in the Red Sea and especially in Sharm el Sheikh is one of the best places in the world for snorkeling, scuba diving and boat trips to the nearby reefs. Our guide to the best snorkeling spots in Sharm El Sheikh will tell you where to go first to get the most out of your snorkeling.

Different then advertised

Overall the trip was ok, the boat looks very nice and the crew is friendly. What was very unpleasant was that there are big differences with what’s advertised. A few notable differences; 1. There’s actually no sailing like the pictures indicate. 2. According there website it’s 2 hours snorkeling. Actually they first bring you to some island with one overpriced bar. The second snorkeling is only 25-30 minutes before they head back 3. It’s advertised as a nice buffet etc, which is there but soft drinks like Cola are 3/4 euro additional If you’re fine with the above, go. However we found that in terms of value for money, the glass boat/submarine boats are much better value for money.

What an amazing trip! Pick up from hotel was on time, staff on the boat were so friendly, especially Alli and Alli our chef and our snorkelling guide Couldn’t have been looked after better, memorable day and would thoroughly recommend

snorkeling tours sharm el sheikh

Everything is fine: the food is very tasty - many thanks to the chef! The team is sociable and fun! The yacht is cozy and beautiful))) We were satisfied!

we had an absolutely fantastic trip, great that there is time to snorkel. The only minus, but on the other hand a big one, the prices on board for drinks and chocolate. Selected were a type of soft drink and a type of iced tea. We paid 700 E-pounds for one soda, two ice the and one chcolate, which is 3-4 times as much as at a store, I can understand not having a sign with the prices, because then you would have found that your did not sell very much.

"Thank You very much for organizing my today's boat trip of breathtaking beautiful waters of the Red Sea to Ras Mohamed National Park and White Island. Weather was amazing, boat crew was superfriendly, most of them knew English, diving instructor was superprofessional and underwater photos still are warming my heart." Andris (43) from Latvia, EU.
