Kray Walking Tour of East London: 7 Free Spots You Can See Today

London’s East End had a few significant monsters in the last few centuries: the Ratcliffe Highway murders, Jack the Ripper, and the Kray twins. All were bloody, all were brutal, and all were notorious. But the Kray twins strangely leave a legacy more like Robin Hood than the bogeyman.

Come along on a free Kray walking tour of all the East London haunts notorious because of the Kray twins – the most famous london gangsters of all time.

Kray Walking Tour: Follow Along on My Map

kray walking tour map

Take a Kray walking tour with me through Bethnal Green, now part of the London borough of Tower Hamlets. At the time of the Kray twins, this area was comprised of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney, and collectively is East London .

We’re near Jack the Ripper territory here but just a bit further north and east. The Krays and the East End are synonymous, and there are still places and people here who remember them fondly, and some who remember them as monsters.

The Kray Twins: East London’s Most Notorious Residents

The Kray Twins: Ronnie Kray and Reggie Kray

Ronnie and Reggie Kray were famous London gangsters in 1950s and 1960s. They grew up in Bethnal Green, and went on to run a criminal empire that included protection rackets, gambling, armed robbery…and even murder. The Krays were known for their brutal violence and were feared by both their rivals and those who worked for them.

Despite their criminal activities, the Krays had a certain level of charm and charisma that made them popular with some members of the public, particularly those from working-class backgrounds. The legend of the Krays lives on in pop culture and in the streets we’re about to walk down.

1. Kray Walking Tour Stop 1: The Blind Beggar Pub

kray walking tour stop 1: Blind beggar pub

We’re beginning our Kray walking tour where their gangland empire effectively ended: The Blind Beggar Pub on Whitechapel Road.

On the 9th of March, 1966, George Cornell, member of the Kray’s biggest rival gang the Richardsons, was drinking in the Blind Beggar. Ronnie Kray and his associate Ian Barrie walked in and confronted the man in a verbal altercation. Barrie fired two warning shots into the ceiling, then Ronnie pulled out his gun and shot Cornell in the head. He died later in hospital.

The beef supposedly started when Cornell called Ronnie a homophobic slur. Ronnie was, in fact, gay, but not ashamed of it. Everyone knew, and he didn’t try to hide it. And he wouldn’t abide anyone bashing him or his lifestyle.

In the years that followed the murder, it took police a long time to get witnesses to testify against the Krays. Eventually some witnesses caved, though, including the barmaid that day. Ronnie was sentenced at The Old Bailey in 1969 to life in prison. He died in 1995 while still incarcerated.

Rumor is you can still see those original bullet holes, though it’s unclear if they’re the real deal or reproductions. At any rate, it’s a hauntingly good pub with a dark past. Let’s not glorify the Krays over a pint here. Instead, remember the life of George Cornell who, no matter what he was up to, didn’t deserve to die. He left behind a family, who didn’t deserve this heartache either.

2. Kray Walking Tour Stop 2: The Repton Boys Boxing Club

kray walking tour stop 2: repton boys club

The Kray twins, like many lads growing up in the East End, were keen boxers and trained here. Once they began their criminal empire, they supported the club with financial donations, and even today some Kray merchandise goes to support the club.

The building was originally a Victorian Bath House, as you can see in the stone work, but opened as a youth and boxing club in 1884, making it the oldest and first boxing club in London. The murder of Ginger Marks by Kray associate Freddie Foreman took place outside the club in 1965.

3. Kray Walking Tour Stop 3: The Carpenters Arms, Cheshire Street

kray walking tour stop 3: the carpenter's arms owned by Violet Kray

In 1963, the Kray twins purchased this pub as a gift for their mother Violet. Violet loved this pub, and would hold court on weekends to all of the twins’ friends and associates, as well as her old East End pals.

The previous owners of the pub claimed that the twins used an old coffin lid as a bar top, though it’s unclear if it’s still in use today. Google says the pub is temporarily closed and it was when I walked by; check before you head for a pint.

4. Kray Walking Tour Stop 4: William Davis Primary School

kray walking tour stop 4: William Davis primary school

The Kray twins attended primary school here when it was Wood Close School. The boys were known to get into schoolyard scraps, so it was suggested they start boxing. There are supposedly bullet holes from the murder of Ginger Marks near the school sign on Cheshire street, but I couldn’t locate them when I visited.

5. Kray Walking Tour Stop 5: The Kray’s Childhood Home, Vallance Road

kray walking tour stop 5: the Kray's childhood home Vallance Road

The Kray family lived at 178 Vallance Road, also called “Fort Vallance” by friends and associated. Charles and Violet Kray moved their family to this address when the twins were 5, and the couple later moved to Braithwaite House in Islington ( also on my map ) when the twins were grown. The original terraced houses were torn down and replaced by this block of flats in the 1980s.

Reggie later wrote of his time at the house in his autobiography Born Fighter : “ Number 178 was a lucky old house. It had a big oak door with a large knocker, and the people used to call it ‘Fort Vallance.’ It was a terraced house with a toilet out in the yard. Ron and I used to love the kitchen. We had a big coal fire and we used to sit around it while our mother used to be doing the ironing or making pots of stew or cups of tea. ”

This is a private residence. Please be respectful and mindful of privacy.

6. Kray Walking Tour Stop 6: E. Pellicci

kray walking tour stop 6: E Pellicci

The Krays met for breakfast daily in this Bethnal Green greasy spoon to go over accounts and give orders to their associates. Scenes from the Tom Hardy film Legend were also shot on location here, though in the film the green awnings are gone.

Reggie Kray later wrote in East End Stories : “ A memory popped into my head of sitting in Pellicci’s Cafe on the Bethnal Green Road savouring a coffee and talking to good friends. Does the cafe, which has been there since the turn of the century, still open its doors every day? Does pencil-moustache Nevis Pellicci still bustle around shouting orders trough to his wife Maria, or Mama as she was known? That place served the best food outside of your own mothers kitchen and it still makes my mouth water at the thought. “

7. Kray Walking Tour Stop 7: St Matthew’s Church, St. Matthew’s Row

kray walking tour stop 7: St Matthew's church

We end our Kray walking tour where the Krays ended. All three Kray brothers had their funerals here in this 1743 church: Ronnie Kray in 1995, Reggie Kray in 2000, and Charlie Kray (their older brother) also in 2000.

Each time mourners lined Cheshire Street and the processions went all the way through the East End. Google Kray funeral photos and you’ll see how beloved they were to their community. However, the Krays are not buried here, but at Chingford Mount Cemetery in Waltham.

Remembering the Kray Twins: Fear and Fame

krays london tour

The Kray twins leave a strange legacy, both as notorious murderers who would deck you if you looked at them, but also as gentlemen, who would pay the tab for all the little old ladies dining at Pellicci’s. They weren’t Robin Hoods, but they didn’t go down as pure evil, either.

Kray Walking Tour: Final Thoughts

I hope you learned a lot about these East End haunts on my Kray walking tour. These were men who caused a lot of terror and heartache: they killed people, they maimed people, they ruined lives. But they are also still held in high regard around these parts, and those who remember them recall both that fear and the fawning.

It’s an odd legacy, and a fascinating one. There’s a news story here from after their deaths that explores their fame in the East End.

do not book this tour as it is a scam!!! I booked and turned up with 10 other people and NO ONE turned up to take the tour. we waited for 45 min. we call the operator but had no response. very dissapointed

Guide didn't turn up. No response from their phone, email or FB page. Check their reviews on google and FB. Recurring theme, they are a con. Can't leave 0 stars

Jamie our tour guide was friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable about the Kray Twins. Tested our knowledge on the twins and told us a few things we didn't know which obviously kept it interesting. Also told us some other interesting stories along the way round.

John was very informative. Certainly knew his stuff. The tour was very interesting. Well worth going on if you are interested in the Krays and their culture.

Our guide John was incredibly knowledgable , friendly and happy to take as many questions as we liked. Highly recommended.

Good tour, unfortunately it started to rain.

The Seediest Spots in East London: Stalking the Kray Twins in 'Legend'

The film Legend, which opens in the U.S. today, stars Tom Hardy as both Ronald and Reginald Kray, a pair of identical twins who in the 1960s became (and remain today) two of London’s most notorious gangsters. The Krays were handsome, ferocious, and gentle by turn, stylish if not sophisticated, masters of deadpan wit, and they loved a night on the town. Like most criminals, they dreamt big and expanded their decidedly unincorporated gang (known as "The Firm") to terrorize all of London, but their story begins and stays in the hardscrabble part of town that they knew best. East London has come a long way from the petty thuggery that the Krays managed to transcend, but it’s cool enough, or always has been grounded enough, to appreciate their extravagances. Walk into any business in this area, find the oldest local in the room, and, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that person will have a story to tell you about the Krays.

Wandering through East London in the brothers' shadow, alongside the film, which was shot on location with impeccable production design, is a tour through the best parts of what’s already the most charismatic part of town, because it’s a tour through a sensibility and a personality that have never left the area, traits that indeed well predated the Krays, even as the brothers molded this tiny universe to their specs. You get the feeling that characters like them—the film’s title is apt—couldn’t have come from anywhere else. Here are a few of the neighborhood's can't-miss, Kray-approved spots.

The Krays’ father, Charlie, supported the family by traveling to far corners of England and bringing back second-hand goods, mainly clothes, to sell in the city. These days, the East End is still one of the best neighborhoods to shop vintage (though now it's by choice, rather than necessity). The store Rokit has four outposts around the city (a less picked-over outlet is the flagship, in Covent Garden), but the two stores on Brick Lane are worth a visit. Skip their original pieces, which are made out of recycled fabrics (and sold at prices so outrageous, Charlie Kray would have applauded), and go for the vintage wear instead.

The Carpenter’s Arms

Off Brick Lane you can find this cozy pub. The Krays assembled their gang The Firm here: They dispensed marching orders for their thugs, would hang out here to drink, and, eventually, the brothers bought the pub outright for their beloved mother, Violet. Its exterior was recreated elsewhere for the film, but the actual locale is well worth a visit: Its wood-and-brick-filled interior is warm and charming, and the staff are kind enough to charge your iPhone behind the bar and hand you a paper to read while you're offline. It's a welcome, and welcoming, respite from the mayhem of Brick Lane.

The Blind Beggar

In Mile End is a very Kray-historic bar called the Blind Beggar, where Ronald Kray shot George Cornell point-blank in 1966, the last of a long string of violent and shamelessly public acts, and the one that finally brought Ronald Kray a life sentence. Both its interior, decked with archival photos and a spacious patio, and its exterior, a busy corner that is choked with street construction, are unprepossessing, and little appears to remain from the time that the Krays used it as an office/living room. It is crucial to the story of the Krays, however, and a common first stop for die-hard crime aficionados.

Image may contain: Banister, Handrail, Furniture, Railing, Staircase, Building, and Housing

The Royal Oak is now a chic gastro-pub.

The Royal Oak

Some of the best interior scenes in the film were shot at another bar in the area that is much more period-friendly and resplendent with archival detail: the Royal Oak, near the Columbia Road Flower Market, which makes for a gorgeous Sunday in the city at any time of year. The food in the sedate, handsomely appointed dining room upstairs is gastropub-chic. Visit both the bar and the market on a Sunday midday and watch the neighborhood come alive; to avoid the throngs, come early in the week.

St. Matthew's Church

The church where the Krays were eventually buried is another lovely and quiet corner of the neighborhood: St. Matthew’s Church sits on a stately and spacious green. The funeral for their mother drew 60,000 people through its quiet lane in 1982, doubtless because both Kray twins were briefly released from jail (in handcuffs) in order to attend.

E. Pellicci's Café

On approach to E. Pellicci’s Café with a camera, the proprietor just sighs and asks, “Kray tour?” The Kray twins ate regularly at this local greasy spoon, and it’s beautifully untouched from their time, not to mention still a great place for a cheap and cozy meal. It reproduces memorably in the film and the staff will happily tell you all about the shoot.

This image may contain Interior Design Indoors Building Architecture Hall Theater Room Auditorium and Apse

The Krays would have loved to hang at Wilton's Music Hall, where you can still see great music.

Wilton's Music Hall

No one loved a good night out more than the Krays, and the nightclubs that they ran roughshod were centers for criminals to keep lockers of tools, exchange information, pick up starlets or pick fights with challengers. People would come out to their clubs whether or not they had skin in the criminal game: Who needs Hollywood when you can witness a near-fatal fistfight right around the corner? The lush clubs in the film make you want to go out. If the Krays were swinging now, they might hang out at Wilton’s Music Hall, a venue in the East End that has been restored to reflect the splendor that you see in the film. If you can catch a show there, do, the lineup is eclectic and smart; if you can’t stay for a show, take in its glorious Mahogany Bar and savor a drink or two.

The Café de Paris

The Krays also owned a gorgeous club called the Hideaway. It’s now defunct, but the film uses the Cafe de Paris to recreate (perfectly) the magic of the original. The Cafe de Paris is not technically in the East End—it’s actually near Leicester Square, in the center of town—but it opened in 1924 and is the kind of lush, opulent place that the Aga Khan visits when in London. For glamor in spades, you should, too.

Kray Twins East London Gangsters

The Kray twins: Britain’s most infamous gangsters with a weird cult following and a load of celebrity friends. The pair ruled the streets of 1960s’ London with a network of fear and violence . Their gang business (“the Firm”) included assaults, firebombing, armed robberies and murders, hidden behind the showbiz nightclubs the twins ran in the West End.

Today the twins seem to be not just infamous but widely admired. Perhaps their most recent reincarnation as Tom Hardy in the 2015 film  Legend has something to do with it. A search for #kraytwins on Instagram brings up a load of glamorous shots of Hardy smoking, or tattoos of the twins’ faces plastered over people’s forearms.

It’s easy to walk around the small circuit of Ronnie and Reggie’s home turf in Bethnal Green, East London – their primary school and the church their funerals were held at are across street from each other.

The twins’ primary school, now called William Davis Primary School. They grew up at nearby 178 Vallance Road (now demolished).

Repton Boys Club

The boxing club where the twins trained as lightweight boxers, just a bit further down Cheshire Street from their primary school. They’d turned professional by the time they were teenagers, but this career path came to an abrupt end when they were dishonourably discharged from National Service. After punching a corporal they spent the next six months in prison instead, assaulting guards and meeting new criminal contacts. They were also some of the last people to be held in the Tower of London.

This Italian cafe on Bethnal Green Road was one of the twins’ favourite meeting places, and they’d been going there since they were kids. It also appears in Legend .

The Blind Beggar

The pub where Ronnie killed George Cornell in 1966, a member of the rival Richardson Gang (their gang activities included nailing people to the floor). Apparently George’s last words were “well, look what the dog’s brought in”, before Ronnie shot him in the head at close range. Despite the amount of people who saw it happen no one was willing to testify against him. Ronnie eventually received life imprisonment for the murder, while Reggie went down for stabbing Jack McVitie to death in 1967.

© Simon Montgomery

Being behind bars wasn’t going to stop the Kray empire – despite being in different prisons the twins began running a celebrity bodyguard business (Frank Sinatra hired 18 men from them).

St. Matthew’s Church

Ronnie died in prison in 1995, and Reggie was released just before he died of cancer in 2000. Both their funerals were held in this church opposite their primary school. Barbara Windsor and Morrissey are said to have sent wreaths.

Chingford Mount Cemetery

© Simon Montgomery

The twins’ graves can be found at this suburban East London cemetery. Whilst we visited three other groups of people turned up, some taking drive-by shots from their cars, others attempting to explain the legend of the Krays to their baffled kids.

Reggie’s first wife Frances Kray is buried here too; after an abusive relationship and eight months of marriage to Reggie she committed suicide when she was 23. Her family tried to have her re-buried under her maiden name Shea (which she’d reverted back to) but Reggie wasn’t having any of it. She lies there in the Kray family plot, a truer symbol of the Krays’ legacy than anything you’ll see on Instagram.

© Simon Montgomery

How to get there

  • The nearest tube station is Bethnal Green – exit and walk up Bethnal Green Road
  • The first location you’ll see is Pellicci’s cafe on the left. From there carry on up the road and take a left St. Matthew’s Row to see St. Matthew’s Church
  • Further down on the corner of St. Matthew’s Row you’ll find The Carpenters Arms
  • Take another left at The Carpenters Arms towards William Davis Primary School and Repton Boys Club
  • The Blind Beggar pub is less than 15 minutes’ walk from Repton Boys Club, close to Whitechapel tube station

Walking tours around Bethnal Green/Whitechapel are available but you’ll have to make a separate trip to Chingford Mount Cemetery to see the graves. Both Chingford and Highams Park overground stations are about half an hour’s walk from the cemetery.
