I didn’t really know what to expect, I figured there would be some great views and cool movie props and there certainly was but that wasn’t really what made the trip so special. Our tour guide, shout to to Ellie (not sure if I am spelling that right) was absolutely phenomenal and hilarious. It really added to the experience to have a fun tour guide who was not only super knowledgeable but also does a great job connecting with the guest and making us laugh. You could tell he really cares about the animals they have on the ranch and protecting and continue to grow the environment they’ve built over there. Thanks for the awesome time today Ellie we will certainly make our way back to check out another tour next time we visit. Mahalo……but never goodbye…see ya later 🤙🏼 Read more Written May 5, 2024

  • GoPlaces36931410918 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Not worth it I'm reviewing the fact that it's too expensive to go. For $146 for adults and $75 for kids it's way too much, and it doesn't even include food. Someone is making killer profit, and smells greedy to me. All you do is drive around the island in a truck. How can it possibly be that much?? Way too overpriced if you ask me. We are from California and for the same price we could go to Disneyland so this was easy to skip. If you want to see the grounds you can just walk along the outside and take photos. Save your money and go to a Luau were you'll actually be fed and get a show for far cheaper. • kimtt2023 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Koaloa Ranch/Jurassic Park location It's a very spread out place of a few thousand acres. 'Chinaman's Hat' is opposite to the Ranch. It has various activities to keep various members of a large family occupied. Do some research on what it offers and what activity is suitable for you. My extended family each took an activity and each enjoyed it. It takes up to 90 -120 mins for each activity. One can spend an entire day there. Don't rush through and imbibed on the views at each stop. Although the guide may hurry you, you can have a word with him to pace it. Four of us took a UTV (utility terrain vehicle) which is a 4 seater. Some of the vehicle look more beat up than others. Before one drives off, check on the brakes as the terrain is rough and some are quite steep. If you feel a spongy brake, ask for a change of vehicle - your life and others depends on it. It was both our first time on an e-bike, so we were a bit nervous, but our tour guide Karenna did a great job explaining everything and the safety video helped a lot. Karenna was super fun and was kind enough to take photos of all us riders. The e-bikes are much quieter than the ATV's which I appreciated, being out in nature. Kualoa Ranch is truly a special place, and the e-bike tour is a great way to experience the mountainous and ocean views. Loved learning about the history of this magical place too. Thank you and keep up the awesome work! Read more Written April 26, 2024
  • Carl G 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles E-Bike is the way to go! The e-bike tour is the way to go! Others were going on the UTV (you have to reserve them weeks in advance) or horseback. I made my reservation for the e-bike tour the same day. My wife and I got to the ranch and check-in and was told we were the only ones signed up for that tour! SCORE! It was basically a private tour. We watched a safety video then practiced with the bikes. After about 5mins of practice we were on our way. Our tour guide, Christian, was AMAZING! He was hospitable and knowledgeable. We took our time at each site because it was just the 3 of us. My wife was pregnant and easily traversed the hills and offroad areas. We never broke a sweat with the assisted pedal e-bikes. The tour lasted about 2hrs. The UTVs weren't able to go where we went on the bikes and they couldn't talk while driving because the UTVs are too loud. We were able to ride and have conversations. I can't thank Christian enough for being such an awesome guide. Read more Written April 25, 2024

The tour was in a school bus. Our seats were just ahead of the emergency door so we had no window. There were at least 4 people sitting single in seats. I was sitting in the aisle seat so could see nothing out my side. All of the movie signs were right next to the road so I was unable to see those out the other side. I said something to the driver and was told nothing they could do about it. I think there is. Take those seats out. The driver/guide was very informative and I would recommend her anytime. But I could have sat in a lecture hall and gotten the same tour. While some of the information given was very informative, it had nothing to do with movies. Total tour was 70 min. The movie tour was m ... ade, especially memorable by our awesome tour guide. She was hilarious and made the whole experience that much better. It’s an absolutely beautiful place and we enjoyed learning about the working ranch, and the Hawaiian culture. The buffet lunch in between both tours was also very enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour.

Tour Reviews

We did this tour while vacationing in Oahu. It was so much fun. Auntie was our driver. She’s great. The best driver there.! Can’t say enough about it. Learned lots about the history of the ranch and the filming of movies making props etc. I rate it 11 out of 10!!

My kids loved this tour. They are Jurassic Park fans and they loved seeing the Indominus Rex and the Gate. Make sure you book this tour with plenty of time. I booked it a week in advance and I found it available by pure luck.

What I loved the most about this tour was the guide. She was amazing. When you get off at the Jurassic Park Log, there is a big Jurassic Park sign and our tour guide had a plastic dinosaur. She takes your phone camera and put the dinosaur in front of the camera so that it looks like the dinosaur is huge and then she tells you “pretend you are running from it”. So the pictures came out really good. I love my pictures. The whole experience was just awesome!

I am not a movie fan. I took the tour because my husband loves movies. I had no clue about the big amount of movies that were filmed here. I personally found the military history more interesting (again, this is just me since I am not a movie fan). My favorite part was the bunker on the side of the Hill. If you love movies, this is the tour for you.

Dale is the absolute best!!! Had us laughing and learning the whole way. She made the experience a wonderful one. Dale is a joy to be around!!

Looking for something fun to do on your next trip to Hawaii?

Kualoa Ranch is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Hawaii. With good reason – it’s home to some of the most amazing scenery and has been used as a filming location for dozens of movies and TV shows.

The ranch offers several different tours, but the movie tour is by far one of the most popular. I did this tour with my mom and my 5-year-old son and we loved it!

It takes you on a bus ride around the property, stopping at various locations where famous movies and TV shows were filmed. You’ll get to see firsthand how they turned this beautiful piece of land into an epic movie set.

If you’ve watched movies that take place in Hawaii, chances are at least a few scenes were filmed at Kualoa Ranch.

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu FAQs

While there is technically only one designated movie tour, almost every tour at Kualoa Ranch features a few Oahu filming sites. That’s because SO many movies and TV shows were filmed at Kualoa Ranch.

A lot of scenes from this Netflix movie were filmed right at Kualoa Ranch. You can see some things inside the bunker.

Some of our favorite Oahu movies include Finding Ohana ; Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates ; 50 First Dates ; You, Me, and Dupree ; Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle , and Jurassic World . These are just a few of the movies filmed at Kualoa Ranch.

kualoa's movie sites & ranch tour

Brief History of Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch was founded by Dr. Gerritt P. Judd back in 1850. He came to Hawaii from the East Coast to help treat Native Hawaiians who were battling diseases and new illnesses.

After seeing how Waikiki and Honolulu were quickly developing, he decided to purchase the 4,000 acre Kualoa Ranch property for $10,000 in order to preserve the sacred land.

Today, the land is still owned and managed by Dr. Judd’s descendants. They offer tours, event rentals, and commercial activities in order to keep the land at Kualoa undeveloped and pristine for future generations.

Kualoa Ranch Tours

There are a TON of Kualoa Ranch tours. So, if some people in your party want to do the movie tour, but others are looking for something else, you can probably find something for everyone here.

Image of the Kualoa Ranch private nature reserve sign in a valley with green mountains.

And if you are pretty energetic, you could also do more than one tour in a day. Just be sure to leave time to refuel with food and drinks in between.

Here are some of the best Kualoa Ranch tours besides the Hawaii movie tour:

  • Jurassic Valley ATV Raptor Tour (ages 5+)
  • Movie Set Tour, Jungle Jeep Expedition & Farm Tour (ages 3+)
  • Kualoa Ranch Zipline Tour (ages 6+)
  • Jurassic Valley Horseback Riding Tour at Kualoa Ranch (ages 10+)
  • Jurassic Valley Bike Tour Adventure at Kualoa Ranch (ages 10+)
  • Kualoa Ranch Secret Island (all ages)
  • Kualoa Ranch Catamaran Cruise at Kaneohe Bay (all ages)

What to Know about the Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour Before You Go:

How to book the kualoa ranch movie tour.

All the Kualoa tours are pretty popular so it’s really important that you reserve your tour ahead of time. It’s not a good idea to just show up.

Image of a boy standing in a replica dinosaur skull at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu.

This Oahu movie tour was sold out a lot during this past year so we booked our tickets a few months in advance. It’s really easy to book online HERE .

Parking at Kualoa Ranch

Thankfully, there are TONS of parking spots at Kualoa Ranch. It’s all free parking, too. Just avoid the spots designated for their tour vehicles, which are clearly marked.

They will ask you to arrive 45 minutes before your tour time. That’s so you’ll have plenty of time to check in, use the restroom, etc.

Image of the Movie Sites Tour sign at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu.

If you didn’t bring a water bottle, you can head into Aunty Pat’s Cafe to get some drinks and/or snacks for the tour.

kualoa's movie sites & ranch tour

Once you head to the movie tour loading area, you’ll see a vending machine with ponchos and snacks. And there’s another machine with phone battery chargers.

Image of a mom and son posing with a dinosaur head at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu.

There are also LOTS of fun photo spots in the waiting area for the Kualoa movie tour. It’s a perfect place to take some pre-tour photos.

Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour

You’ll take a commemorative photo in front of the mountains before hopping inside a large bus with no windows.

Image of a boy standing in front of a green bus at Kualoa Ranch.

The first row has ample leg room but the rest of the bus is pretty standard. They will have you sit 2 to a seat.

Image of a grandma, mom, and son inside a bus

This 90-minute tour focuses just on the Ka’a’awa Valley (there are 3 valleys at Kualoa Ranch). You’ll spend most of your time on the bus with just a couple of stops where you can get out and take photos.

You won’t be stopping at every movie site or photo op. Kualoa Ranch is huge and there’s not enough time to see everything in a 1.5-hour tour.

Image of a sign that says Hurley's Golf Course Film Location from Lost.

I do want to point out that because this is a working filming site, there are only movie props/sets in specific areas. Most of the sets have been cleared away but there is signage to show you where specific movies were filmed.

Our guide was hilarious and she told us all kinds of stories throughout the tour. It was quite informative and entertaining.

Kualoa Ranch is where many movies on Oahu were filmed including 50 First Dates , Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates , and Jurassic World .

Food Options

If you’re trying to figure out where to eat at Kualoa Ranch, you’ll want to set aside time to enjoy lunch at Aunty Pat’s Cafe . This is the Kualoa Ranch restaurant.

Almost all of their food is grown locally at Kualoa Ranch. And the food is GOOD.

You’ll need to stand in line to order your food and then wait for them to cook it. They also have grab and go options where you don’t have to wait in the grill line. I saw prepackaged sandwiches, snacks, and drink options.

Otherwise, you can drive into Kaneohe or Kailua and have an array of restaurant options.

The gift shop features lots of merchandise inspired by Kualoa Ranch movies. There are a bunch of Jurassic Park items, stuffed penguins from 50 First Dates , and so many other things.

You can find all sorts of Oahu souvenirs at the Kualoa Ranch gift shop.

Plus, they have a great assortment of general Oahu souvenirs.

The Highlight of this Oahu Tour and What You Should Look Out For

This is really the perfect Kualoa Ranch tour for families with babies or toddlers or for grandparents who don’t want to do an “adventure.”

Image of the remnants of a stone sugar cane mill on Oahu.

We drove past an old sugar cane mill and we learned that was one of the first endeavors on the property. It only lasted a few years before folding.

Image of a WWII bunker on Oahu with an old first aid truck out front.

The first stop was an actual bunker that is filled with movie memorabilia and displays. It’s all undercover so it’s a great way to get out of the sun.

kualoa's movie sites & ranch tour

We loved all the cool photo spots and movie scenes set up. I didn’t realize just how many movies were filmed at Kualoa Ranch and it was cool to see all the movie posters.

Image of a grandma, mom, and son inside the Jurassic World truck.

We also drove through a really gorgeous replica Hawaiian village with homes, plants, and a fish pond.

Image of Hawaiian fishing ponds at Kualoa Ranch.

This was a great opportunity to learn more about Hawaiian culture and the ways that Kualoa Ranch is trying to keep that educational component for visitors and residents.

Image of pigs at Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii.

Along the way, we drove past a pig sty that had little baby piglets! Apparently Kualoa Ranch uses a special Korean method of raising pigs and there’s no smell involved.

kualoa's movie sites & ranch tour

We also stopped at the boneyard where we could get out and take photos with all the replica dinosaur bones and King Kong.

Image of a toy dinosaur looking like it's eating a family at Kualoa Ranch.

This is where our guide offered to take photos and video of us with the Jurassic Park sign and a toy dinosaur. It was really awesome!

Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour Tips for Families

What to wear.

While some Kualoa Ranch tours require closed-toe shoes or long pants, this Kualoa Ranch movie site tour does NOT.

You really can wear whatever you like. We saw people wearing shorts, dresses, skirts, sandals, flip flops, etc.

Image of a boy wearing a Jurassic Park shirt in front of a Jurassic World exhibit at Kualoa Ranch.

My son and I wore our Jurassic Park shirts because it was a good excuse to wear them again! I originally had our matching family shirts made for the Kualoa Ranch ATV tour that we did a few months prior.

I do recommend wearing sunscreen as the sunlight does come in through the window. And you might want to wear a hat when you explore the boneyard (there’s no shade).

What to Bring

You’ll definitely want to bring a camera (either cellphone or a big camera). And you might even want a gimbal so you can take steady video along the drive.

You’ll also want to make sure to bring cash so you have tipping money .

If you think you’ll want to head to Kualoa Beach right after (which I definitely recommend), be sure to pack a swimsuit and change of clothes.

How Much Does it Cost and Where is it Located?

Kualoa Ranch is located in Kaneohe and it’s about a 45 minute drive from Waikiki. It can be much longer during thick traffic, so be sure to check before you go.

Image of a collage of TV shows filmed at Kualoa Ranch.

The Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour costs $54 for adults, $38 for kids ages 3-12, and kids 0-2 years old are free. This Kualoa movie tour is for kids of all ages.

Kualoa Ranch Jungle Tour vs Movie Tour

I know a lot of families debate between doing the Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour vs Jungle Tour.

We actually did both the Movie Tour and the Jungle Tour in the same morning. We started with the movie tour at 9:00 am and then did the jungle tour at 11:00 am.

Image of a boy waving a shaka hand sign out the window of a Jeep at a ranch in Hawaii.

The Movie Tour focuses on the Ka’a’awa Valley and the Jungle Expedition focuses on the Hakipu’u Valley. They do not see the same attractions.

The Jungle Expedition is for kids ages 3+ and it’s a pretty bumpy ride. You’ll go off-roading a bit. It’s less adventurous than the ATV tour, but it will check the box for families who want a few thrills. Read my full Kualoa Ranch Jungle Tour review .

So, is the Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour Worth It?

Yes! We’ve done several Kualoa Ranch tours and this was such a relaxing way to see the property.

This is perfect for families with kids who are too young to do some of the adventures. Or for grandparents who need something to do while the rest of the families goes ziplining or rides ATVs.

It’s super cool to get out at the bunker to see all the movie memorabilia (something you don’t do on the ATV tour or Jungle Expedition).

We actually did this Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour first and then headed to the Jungle Expedition later that morning, which features a different valley. It worked out perfectly!

To call Kualoa Ranch a “ranch” is a bit like calling Yellowstone National Park a picnic ground.

Sure, its 4,000 acres are home to cattle, horses, wild pigs, shrimp farms and a plethora of fruit trees. But it’s also a tourist destination for boating, jungle hiking, ATV tours, ziplining and riding those roughly 110 horses.

But perhaps the greatest claim for the ranch, now in its sixth generation of family ownership, is its use for decades as a film location for movies and TV shows the likes of “Lost,” “Jurassic Park,” Elvis’ “Paradise Hawaiian Style,” “Pearl Harbor” and “Fifty First Dates.”

If you’re a film fan at all, there’s likely some location you’ll recognize while on the 90-minute movie sites tour of the ranch, which dubs itself “Hollywood’s Hawaii backlot.” The tour is offered seven days a week about a dozen times a day and includes an overview of much of the rest of the ranch. The open-air bus makes several stops for photos and closer looks along the way.

American doctor Gerrit Judd bought about 600 acres of the ranch land from Hawaiian King Kamehameha III in 1850. By the 1860s, its owners started raising sugar cane, and the ruins of the stone-block sugar mill lie just feet from the edge of Kamehameha Highway, the coastal road that winds up the windward side of Oahu.

The ranch’s flatland near the coast was converted by the U.S. military into Kualoa Airfield during World War II. Many concrete bunkers from the war still stand.

The most impressive and by far the largest of these is Battery Cooper, built in 1943. It was carved out of a cliff overlooking the bay and is a warren of rooms and cubbyholes.

The ranch has converted it into a movie museum, with walls bedecked in dozens of film posters and enlarged photos.

One narrow, long room is devoted to “Lost” memorabilia and props, including replicas of the Galaga submarine and the enigmatic 1980s-era Swan-complex computer on which an attendant had to enter “The Numbers” every 108 minutes. If you weren’t into “Lost,” then descriptions of these artifacts are complete gibberish and the displays in this room will be as mysterious as that Swan computer.

But there’s probably some prop that you’ll recognize in the bunker, with one section depicting a World War II-era Japanese Imperial Army garrison headquarters and another showing replicas and photographs from “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World.”

There’s a large animatronic T-Rex in a cave that will impress, even if you’re not a fan of the original 1993 “Jurassic Park” or the sequels it spawned.

The tour stops at what is probably the most iconic movie location on the ranch: the fallen tree trunk that shelters two children and an adult from a small flock of dinosaurs fleeing the jaws of a raging T-Rex in “Jurassic Park.”

Visitors form a line for the chance to pose in mock fear behind the tree trunk. The site is in the center of the wide, sweeping Kaaawa Valley, and the mountain peaks surrounding it appear in many films.

The evening after I took the tour, I re-watched “Tears of the Sun,” the 2003 film with Bruce Willis that takes place in Nigeria — but was filmed almost entirely at Kualoa Ranch.

Many of the scenes were set in this valley, where villages were built — and burned — just for that film. The greatest marvel, though, is how the filmmakers so convincingly depicted a West African nation using a Pacific island.

The remnants of other filming remain on the ranch, most notably several giant-sized Godzilla footprints from the eponymous film released in 2000.

Our tour guide said that the footprints, which looked to be about 40 feet long, had been dug a few yards deep for the filming. But after several cattle on the ranch tumbled into the three-toed footprint, they were filled in with dirt to a manageable level. (A tour-guide tidbit: the Japanese Godzilla of yore had four toes.)

The narrow dirt road that the bus follows through this area was traveled numerous times by Adam Sandler in “Fifty First Dates.” Also nearby and still largely undisturbed is Hurley’s golf course from “Lost.”

On some rolling, treeless hills near the end of the tour, a large movie prop from recent filming sat draped in a huge tarp. But the Hawaiian wind and sun had taken their toll, and a row of colossal teeth set in a jaw could be seen.

The tour guide was cagey about what it was used for. But the trailer now out for the 2017 release of “Kong Skull Island” has some familiar terrain.

Godzilla, make way for King Kong.

The ranch offers round-trip transportation from Waikiki Beach for $15.

Kualoa Ranch is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. year round. Tours operate year round, seven days a week, rain or shine, except for Christmas and New Year’s days. The 90-minute tours run about a dozen times between 8:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

What Is Kualoa Ranch?

Kualoa Ranch is one of the oldest and most revered ranches in Hawaii. Located on Oahu’s windward coast near Kaneohe, this 4,000-acre ranch offers breathtaking views with lush green valleys and majestic mountains.

Kualoa Ranch is a working cattle ranch, but it has also served as an iconic filming location since the 1950s. It has been featured in films such as Jurassic Park , 50 First Dates , Jumanji , and many more.

Lots of cattle in the field at Kualoa Ranch seen during our ATV Raptor tour, with some spectacular mountain views.

Note About Kualoa Ranch Tours

Before we begin, I want to mention that the tour duration includes safety briefings and training. I’ve seen multiple reviews where people said the tour was shorter than expected.

We have been on many tours in Oahu and Kualoa Ranch specifically, and we have never felt like the tour was too short compared to what was advertised.

So, with that said, let’s dive in and look at the top tours at Kualoa Ranch!

1. ATV Raptor Tour

⭐  RATING:  4.5 out of 5 stars  | Duration:  2 hours

Age Restrictions: 21+ years to drive; 5+ years to ride

The ATV Raptor Tour is a thrilling adventure that takes you through the heart of Kualoa Ranch’s Jurassic Valley.

Guests will ride in all-terrain UTVs through dirt roads, passing by movie sets and other landmarks.

This two-hour tour also includes an experienced guide who will take you to some of the ranch’s most beautiful and remote locations. Your guide will share stories about Kualoa Ranch’s rich history, culture, and movies filmed there as you explore its unique terrain.

Each ATV can hold between two to six people depending on your group’s number of kids.

This is an excellent option for those looking for a thrilling adventure and stunning views of the ranch.

Note:  This tour is officially known as the UTV Raptor Tour, but we are referring to it as the ATV tour because most tourists call it the ATV tour. Your guide will be the only one driving an ATV while everyone rides UTVs.

Tip:  This is the most popular tour at Kualoa Ranch, so be sure to book ahead of time! Also, this is a rain-or-shine tour, so be sure to come prepared and check the weather in advance.

We wore raincoats during our tour because mother nature blessed us with rain. If you do not have a raincoat, they sell some ponchos for cheap.

A line of UTVs at Kualoa Ranch parked on the side during our tour.

What’s Included:

Why we love this tour: This tour is the perfect mix of adventure and exploration. You will have an action-packed day, from driving your ATV to learning about Kualoa Ranch’s history! Also, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Even though we did this tour on a rainy day, he still made the experience fun and exciting.

Cons: Very dusty and muddy, but that’s part of the adventure! So, make sure to wear clothes you are okay with getting dirty.

2. Jurassic Adventure Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2.5 hours

Age restrictions : 3+ years

The Jurassic Adventure Tour is a guided tour that takes you to iconic movie sets such as the original Jurassic Park , Jurassic World , King Kong , Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom , and more.

The tour begins in an open-air off-road vehicle, where you will journey through the lush valleys and rugged terrain of Kualoa Ranch. The ride might be a little bumpy, but nothing too intense.

The tour also covers some historical sites, including an old World War II bunker.

Along the way, you can take pictures with some of the props used in different films. Your guide will also share stories about the movies filmed there and interesting facts about Hawaiian history and culture.

Our favorite part of this tour was stopping at the famous Jurassic field where the Gallimimus flock towards the cast! It was surreal to see a place where some of our favorite scenes were shot.

What’s included:

  • Guided tour

Why we love this tour: We loved seeing some of the iconic movie locations. It was also a fantastic way to learn about the different movies filmed at Kualoa Ranch. Also, the guides are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Cons: Some might find this tour a bit pricey, but it’s worth the experience.

3. Jurassic Valley Zipline

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 3 hours

Restrictions:

  • Age: 18+ years old if unaccompanied by an adult
  • Height: Between 4’8” – 6’9”
  • Waist Size: Between 22″ – 50″
  • Upper Thigh Size: Between 18″ – 28″
  • Weight: Between 70 and 280 pounds

The  Jurassic Valley Zipline Tour  is another thrilling way to explore Kualoa Ranch with friends and family. This zipline tour consists of seven ziplines, five short hiking trails, and two suspension bridges.

Guests will take a shuttle to the zipline base camp, where they will be fitted with a harness and helmet. Safety briefings are included before each zipline.

All ziplines are tandem (dual) and range from 200 feet to 1/4 of a mile in length. The lines start easy and get progressively more challenging, but nothing too scary, in our opinion.

The longest zipline is the fourth one, and the fastest one is the seventh giving you time to get used to the experience before it gets more intense.

After the tour, guests will return to the zipline base, where you can purchase photos taken throughout the tour.

The valley at Jurassic Park with some mountain views and some clouds in the sky.

  • All necessary gear

Why we love this tour: The adrenaline rush of flying through Jurassic Valley on a zipline is an unforgettable experience. Also, we love dual zip lines, as these tend to move faster than other single-line tours we’ve been on.

This tour reminds us of ziplining with Outfitters Kauai, one of the best zipline tours in Kauai. If you are ever in Kauai and looking for a tandem zipline experience, definitely check it out.

Cons: Some customers mentioned that most lines were moderate. If you are a very experienced zipliner and an adrenaline junkie, this one might not be the right tour.

4. Horseback Walking Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2 hours

Age: 10+ years old

Height: minimum 4’6″

Weight: maximum 230 pounds

If you would rather explore Ka’a’awa “Jurassic” Valley on the back of a horse, then you should join this two-hour walking tour. The horses are well-trained, so even if you have never been horseback riding before, you can still enjoy it.

The tour begins with an introductory lesson about how to ride your horse correctly and safely. Your guide will then help everyone get on their horses.

The tour will take you along the trails of Ka’a’awa Valley, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and see some of the locations used in film productions.

The trails are easy to navigate, and your guide will give you interesting information about the area as you ride.

The horses at Kualoa Ranch before our tour, with some gorgeous mountain views.

Why we love this tour: The horseback riding tour is a great way to intimately explore Kualoa Ranch and Ka’a’awa Valley. It’s a peaceful way to take in the breathtaking views and learn about the area’s history.

5. Jungle Expedition Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 Minutes

Age Restrictions: 3+ years old

The  Jungle Expedition Tour  is one of the best ways to explore Kualoa Ranch with less work on your part.

You will be driven in a custom-built open-air jungle vehicle to explore the Hakipu’u rainforest. This is the same gorgeous valley seen in Jurassic World , Jumanji , Kong: Skull Island , and more.

The ride is bumpy and fun, and you’ll learn about the history of Kualoa Ranch and the surrounding areas from your guide.

Guests also have the option to take a short 15-minute hike to a scenic overlook with incredible views of the valley.

The lush scenery at Kualoa Ranch with some spectacular mountain views.

  • 15-minute hike (optional)

Why we love this tour: If you don’t have the time or prefer sitting back and taking it all in, this is the perfect way to explore Kualoa Ranch. We also love that this tour is one of the cheaper options and is suitable for people of most ages.

Cons: While this tour includes some stops on movie sets, it has fewer stops than the other tours or the Movie Sites Tour. If your primary goal is to visit most movie sets, this tour might not be the best one. It focuses more on the jungle, the beautiful views, and a fun ride.

6. Hollywood Movie Sites Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 minutes

Restrictions: None

Are you a movie buff? Then the  Hollywood Movie Sites Tour  is perfect for you! This tour has the most movie stops of all the tours listed.

You’ll explore the iconic backdrops used in movies and television shows since the 1950s. Some stops include Jurassic World , Godzilla , Windtalkers , 50 First Dates , Pearl Harbor , Jumanji , and more.

Your guide will take you on a vintage school bus and provide interesting information about the production and filming of the scenes.

This tour also stops at the World War II bunker, where you can find WWII artifacts and exhibits, props, posters, and memorabilia from movies and shows that have been shot at the ranch over the years.

A little village inside of Kualoa Ranch during the Movie Sites Tour with gorgeous mountain views.

Why we love this tour: We love that this tour has the most movie stops. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and told us many interesting stories about the production and filming of each movie. It felt surreal to be standing in the same place where our favorite movies were filmed.

7. Electric Mountain Bike Tour

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2 Hours

Height: Between 4’6” – 6’5”

Weight: Between 85 – 250 pounds

Do you want to explore Kualoa Ranch in a more active way? Then the 6-mile  Electric Mountain Bike Tour  is perfect for you!

You will get outfitted with an electric mountain bike as you explore Kualoa and Ka’a’awa Valleys with your guide. The e-bike makes it easy to cover more ground in less time, with minimal effort on your part. The trail is a gravel/rocky path, but the e-bike and its suspension make it much easier to traverse.

Enjoy spectacular views of Kaneohe Bay, Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat Island), and Kualoa Valley. At certain spots along the trail, your guide will stop for photo ops so you can capture some amazing shots of the scenery.

This tour includes 5-6 stops. During the first stop, you will explore the World War II bunker and its artifacts. After that, you’ll explore the valley and the movie sets.

E-mountain bikes parked on the side of the trail during our tour at Kualoa Ranch.

  • Electric mountain bike rental

Why we love this tour: We love the idea of exploring the ranch on an electric bike. Electric bikes make it easy for people of all skill levels to enjoy the ride. Also, electric bikes are much quieter than ATVs, so it’s a peaceful way to explore nature.

8. Secret Island Beach Adventure

⭐  RATING: 4 out of 5 stars | Duration: 3 Hours

Looking for an adventure that includes a beach? Then the  Secret Island Beach Adventure  is perfect for you. On this tour, you’ll explore Kualoa’s secret beach and take part in many activities.

Guests can participate in kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, beach volleyball, and more. The beach also has hammocks under palm trees for those that want to relax and enjoy the view.

Showers and changing rooms are available on the beach. Bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, drinks, snacks, and whatever else you need for the beach.

  • Beach Activities

Why we love this tour: This is a unique experience. You get to explore the secret beach at Kualoa Ranch and participate in many beach activities with your friends or family. Also, the tour guides are very friendly.

Cons: This tour doesn’t focus on movie sets or touring the gorgeous valleys, so this might not be the best tour if that’s what you’re looking for. This tour is best for those wanting to spend time at a private beach.

9. Kualoa Grown Tour

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 minutes

The  Kualoa Grown Tour  is perfect for those that want to learn about local Hawaiian farming.

Guests will tour one of Hawaii’s most preserved ancient Hawaiian Fishponds (Moli’i), carbon-dated between 800 and 1,000 years old.

For over 800 years, Moli’i has been used to raise fish and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the  United States Department of the Interior .

You’ll also get to explore flower gardens and tropical fruits of Moli’i during the tour.

  • Access to Moli’i Fishpond

Why we love this tour: We love that this tour focuses on agriculture. You get to learn about the ancient Hawaiian culture and traditional farming methods that have been passed down for generations.

Cons: Just like the Secret Island Beach Adventure, this tour doesn’t focus on movie sets or touring the gorgeous valleys.

Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour vs. Jungle Tour

The main difference between the movie tour and the jungle tour is that the movie tour focuses on movie sets, locations, and TV shows filmed at Kualoa Ranch. Overall, the movie tour has more stops at movie sites than the jungle tour.

On the other hand, the jungle tour focuses more on the natural beauty of Kualoa Ranch and its lush green valleys. It also includes some stops at movie sites but is more focused on the flora and fauna of Kualoa Ranch.

Which one should you choose?  It depends on the experience you are looking for when choosing between these two tours. We recommend the movie tour if you’re interested in seeing movie sites and learning about filming locations.

If you’re looking for something more focused on nature and natural beauty, plus some movie location stops, then the jungle tour is a great option.

How to Get to Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is located on the east side of Oahu. Below are the two best ways to get there:

Drive: Driving to Kualoa Ranch is very straightforward. It takes about 35-45 minutes from Waikiki, depending on traffic.

Uber/Lyft or Taxi: If you cannot drive or would rather not, you can book an Uber/Lyft or take a taxi. This option is more costly but is another convenient option.

Kualoa-Ranch-Packages

Description : The ultimate Kualoa experience! Three 90-minute immersive Hawaiian experience tours, which include: our ever-popular Hollywood Movie Sites Tour, our Jurassic Jungle Expedition, and our Aloha Aina Tour. This All-Inclusive Package includes a FREE Kualoa Ranch House Lanai Lunch Pack (Our buffet lunch is back & will be included as the lunch option starting 4/1/22). Check-in at 8:00am required, then expect your fun-filled Kualoa adventure to last until 3:00pm!

Things To Know:  Advanced reservations are recommended as many tours sell out 2-3 weeks in advance. Kualoa prides itself on providing the best guest experience, so our “guide-to-guest” ratios are very low, with one guide to every six or ten guests in most cases (except for the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour). This contributes to very limited availability, so please accept our apologies if the tour you want is not available. You can also search for single seats as they will usually be available on tours at the last minute if you are willing to split up. When you are assigned your schedule, note that A and B itineraries have the same inclusions, as well as the same check-in and finish times. If you are planning to experience the tour as a group, we highly suggest booking all participants in the same tour purchase, so that your party will be together for the tour as a group.

Kualoa Ranch

Majestic Beauty

If Kualoa Ranch’s sweeping green valley and lush ribbed cliffs look familiar, that’s because it’s been the set of countless movies and TV shows, most recognizably, Jurassic Park and Lost. Located on Oahu’s windward coast near Kaneohe, Kualoa’s expansive property is a 4,000-acre working cattle ranch, private nature preserve, and popular tourist attraction that hosts a range of entertaining tours.

kualoa ranch big valley

Yearround, Kualoa Ranch welcomes a steady stream of tourists to its verdant grounds. But, while most visitors are lured to the ranch by exciting activities like ziplining, ATVing, and movie tours , they’ll discover that Kualoa Ranch is more than a tourist attraction. Instead, Kualoa is a veritable Eden shrouded in captivating history that keeps people coming back time and time again.

A Place For Royalty And Refuge

Before visiting the ranch, visitors might not realize that Kaʻaʻawa Valley (Kualoa Valley) is one of Oahu’s most sacred and historically significant places. This flourishing valley was the residence of kings. Children of the aliʻi (royalty) were brought here to be trained in history, traditions, and the art of war. Also within Kaʻaʻawa Valley existed a puʻuhonua. In ancient Hawaii, puʻuhonuas were essentially sacred spaces, where criminals who broke the kapu (or tabu- punishable by death) could seek refuge and forgiveness. Women, children, and the elderly could find peace here, away from battles that might be raging near their homes, and warriors could come to heal. Within the walls of this revered valley, the magic is palpable.

Somewhere within the valley’s towering peaks is an ancient burial cave that was once reserved for chiefs. It’s said that treasures were stored deep within the cave walls. In addition, the intense mana of Kualoa Valley has driven legends of night marchers- processions of ghostly warriors that are feared by most Hawaiian residents. Some contemporary accounts say they have seen the apparitions marching through the valley on full moon nights.

From Refuge To Ranch

In 1850, Kamehameha III sold a 622-acre parcel of the valley to Dr. Gerritt P. Judd, missionary doctor and Kamehameha’s close personal advisor. Additional acreage was later purchased by Judd and his son to complete the 4,000 acres. Today, the land remains in the family and is managed by one of Judd’s direct descendants.

Thanks to careful conservation by the Morgan family (Judd’s descendants), Kualoa Ranch stands in stark contrast to other places on Oahu like Waikiki . As a result, Kualoa serves as a look back into what Hawaii potentially looked like 150 years ago. In fact, the ranch is still home to a preserved 800-year-old fish pond.

Today, Kualoa Ranch is home to about 600 head of cattle and a range of activities that entertain visitors and teach them about the area’s sacred history.

Movie Tours

With the dramatic beauty and powerful mana of Ka’a’awa Valley, it’s easy to see why countless filmmakers chose Kualoa Ranch for the set of their movies. When we say countless, we’re not exaggerating! At locations around the park, you’ll come across an astonishing display of all the movies and TV shows filmed at Kualoa since the 1950s. Most notably, the list includes the iconic franchise Jurassic Park , 50 First Dates, Kong Skull Island, Jumanji, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, Lost, Magnum PI, and Hawaii 5-0- just to name a few.

Kualoa Ranch offers a 1.5-hour Hollywood Movie Sites Tour , traveling to some of the most recognizable filming locations within the valley. This includes a stop at one of Godzilla’s massive footprints, the boneyard from Kong, Skull Island, classic Jurassic Park sites, and a visit to an army bunker built in WWII that is filled with props and historical artifacts. Of course, the bunker has been used as a set in countless films as well.

Arguably, one of the most popular tours at Kualoa Ranch is the 2.5-hour Jurassic Park tour. This tour visits some of the most well-known sites from the Jurassic franchise. This includes the t-rex paddock with its 60-foot high walls, the famous field where the dinosaurs were first shown running through the valley in the original film, as well as memorable locations from the Jurassic World films like the “gyrosphere loading station”.

kualoa movie reel

While Kualoa Ranch is so emblematic of Jurassic Park that once glance up the sweeping valley triggers the swelling theme song to play in your head, it’s recommended to rewatch the original movie and Jurassic World for the best experience on this tour.

Adventure Tours

While famous movies put Kualoa Ranch on the map, movie tours only scratch the surface of what’s on offer at Kualoa. The ranch hosts ATV Raptor tours, where you’ll ramble through mud and flowing streams deep into remote areas of the valley. Ziplining is also a popular option. Kualoa Ranch is home to seven exciting lines and two suspension bridges. Like most tours at Kualoa, you’ll also get a peek at some famous movie sites.

kualoa ranch zipline atv

Kualoa’s reach doesn’t end on land- the ranch actually stretches down to the sea at Kaneohe Bay. Kualoa offers different water activities to choose from. The first is their “ Secret Island Beach Adventure .” This relaxing adventure features a short boat ride across the 800-year-old fishpond to Kualoa’s secret beach, where you can kayak, paddleboard, play some fun games like cornhole, or just kick back in a hammock or on the golden sand. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a little more adventure, you can take a cruise on the Kailani, Kualoa’s 49 passenger catamaran, as part of their “Ocean Voyage Tour.” This 90-minute excursion tours the turquoise waters of Kaneohe Bay and allows guests to take in the stunning backdrop of Hakipuʻu, Kualoa, and the Koʻolau mountains. This adventure also includes a 20-minute fishpond tour where you will learn about ancient Hawaiian stewardship practices.

Last but certainly not least, Kualoa hosts a range of eco/voluntourism tours. Seeing as Kaʻaʻawa Valley was one of the most sacred, protected places on Oahu for centuries, Kualoa Ranch gives visitors the chance to dive into ancient Hawaiian practices and learn more about the islands’ culture. For example, Kualoa’s “Malama Experience” is a hands-on activity that shares with visitors the pillars of kuleana and community that are paramount in Hawaiian culture. In addition, this activity teaches guests about the honored Kalo (taro), which was the plant that Polynesians largely survived off of for thousands of years. Depending on what needs to get done around the ranch that day, the activity might include thatching traditional Hawaiian hales (grass huts), assisting with cleaning, planting, or harvesting Kalo, or caretaking the laʻau lapaʻau (medicinal plants).

Kualoa Ranch

“Kualoa Ranch” by Tara Hunt

Located on Oahu’s scenic north coast, Kualoa Ranch is home to some of Hawaii’s most beautiful mountains, valleys, and cliffs, as well as sandy white beaches and the unusual island known as Chinaman’s Hat. It’s no wonder filmmakers have long been drawn to this region, especially the epic Ka’a’awa Valley. Movies and television series filmed here include Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, Godzilla, Windtalkers, Hawaii 5-0, and LOST.  With a visit to this 4000-acre cattle ranch, your group will enjoy a day of jaw-dropping scenery, fun in the sun, and outdoor adventures on land and sea.

The ranch offers a variety of exciting tours to choose from. On the Movie Sites and Ranch Tour, your group will drive through Kualoa’s beautiful scenery and learn interesting facts about the movies filmed there. The Jungle Expedition Tour offers a slightly more wild ride – in a 6-wheel drive Swiss Pinzgauer! If you would rather stretch your legs, take some pictures, and see the ranch at a slower pace, try the Legends and Legacy Tour, a guided walking tour that focuses on the history of the area, or the 1.5 mile Hakipu’u Hike through scenic Hakipu’u Valley. For an extra-fun, adventuresome way to explore the ranch, try one of Kualoa’s horseback or ATV tours! These tours accommodate riders of all skill levels, so if it’s your first time, no worries! From the back of your horse or ATV, you will see famous movie sites, the lush Ka’a’awa Valley, and spectacular ocean views. Several of Kualoa’s tours will take you out on the waters, including the Ancient Fishing Grounds and Tropical Gardens Tour, where your group will boat across an 800-year old fishpond and explore Kualoa’s gardens, and the Ocean Voyaging Tour, a narrated Catamaran tour of Kaneohe Bay, including views of Mokoli’i Island (Chinaman’s Hat). If you are ready for some laid-back fun, your group can take hula lessons in front of the beautiful Ko’olau Mountains or go on a fun excursion to Secret Island, where a sandy white beach awaits you with volleyball, ping pong, badminton, kayaks, canoes, and hammocks.

Whatever kind of adventure your group is into, you will find it at beautiful Kualoa Ranch!
