Bernard's Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

louis bernard tours

Chez Louis / Bernard's

My parents, Roxanne and Morton Louis Meyer, had spent the first two years of their youthful marriage in the early 1950s living in the city of Nancy, capital of the French province of Lorraine, where my dad was posted as an army intelligence officer. In 1955, at the conclusion of my dad’s overseas military service, my parents were still very much in love with each other and with Europe. Their knowledge of and fondness for France in particular was a powerful bond between them. In St. Louis my father parlayed his love of all things French into a career as an innovative and successful travel agent.
His agency, Open Road Tours, packaged customized driving trips, often in conjunction with Relais de Campagne, a network of lovely family-operated inns around France. This was long before such excursions off the beaten path became common in the travel industry. Dad exulted in planning these driving tours of the countryside; he’d note exactly where travelers would stumble upon a certain vineyard, a worthwhile museum or a particularly good bistro. His clients loved his attention to detail; his business thrived.
At home, too, he and my mom were Eurocentric. They often hosted cocktail parties and dinner parties for friends and business colleagues from France, Italy and Denmark, who either were in town on business or had made a detour to St. Louis just to see us. For several years our house was home to the grown children of French innkeepers. By day these young people would help out in Dad’s office with translations and administrative tasks, and by night they would act as au pairs for my sister, Nancy, my brother, Tommy, and me. French was always being spoken around the house, either by our guests or by my parents (who used it at the dinner table especially when they wanted to discuss something not meant for our ears). Our neurotic, inbred French poodle, Ratatouille, was named after my dad’s favorite Provencal dish.
My father was unquestionably my childhood hero: a hedonist, a gastronome and a man who cherished and passionately savored life. He loved the excitement and risk of the racetrack and gave me a taste for it, even when I was too young to place bets legally. Dad also took risks as a businessman. He was always coming up with exciting new ideas based on his love of travel and food, and on his constant drive to share his finds with others. At one point Open Road Tours had offices and staffs in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Paris. Later, it opened offices all over Europe.
I never fully understood how or why, but sometime in the late 1960s, when I was still a young boy, Open Road Tours went bankrupt. I remember abundant tears and shame, but few details. I heard comments like, "We expanded too quickly." My paternal grandparents were torn apart too. Their only two sons had been in business together ― my father as president and his younger brother as vice president. Whatever events had led to the bankruptcy had also driven a sharp wedge between the two brothers. My mother was anguished, and her disappointment and disapproval were apparent. Business details were not openly discussed, but the family’s bruises were deeply felt.
In 1970, when I was twelve, my father leaped into the hotel business in Italy. Despite the pleas of my mother, and with her father's begrudging help in the form of a $1 million loan, he committed himself to long leases on one hotel in Rome and another in Milan. He was certain that becoming a hotelier would be his ticket to fortune. My mom maintained that it promised nothing more than protracted absences from home. There was always some reason my dad had to go to Italy. Each time the hotel workers went on strike, he flew to Rome or Milan to help make beds. Business flagged and lagged, and although he was spending half a month at a time away from his family to address problems, it inevitably proved impossible for him to operate a hotel business across two continents. At an enormous financial cost and an even greater emotional cost, my father finally found a buyer for his two leases. He then went on to his next idea.
In 1972, still irrepressibly optimistic, my father created another new business, called Caesar Associates. This new company would sell packaged group tours at a deep discount for a very narrow niche of travelers known as interliners ― airline employees and their families. Interliners could fly standby at unbelievably low rates. Dad’s business model was simple but original. He aggregated all the discounts to which interliners were entitled and packaged trips lasting up to two weeks. In addition to low airfares, he negotiated rock-bottom rates for hotels, ground transport, sightseeing, shopping and dining. The value he added was to offer highly imaginative itineraries and use the underlying buying power of group travel to create an extraordinary rapport between price and quality. He hired sparkling young tour guides at each destination, and he kept his clients informed of travel opportunities by writing an endless stream of marketing collaterals. Caesar Associates actually thrived for many years, with outposts in London, Paris, Copenhagen, Madrid, and Rome. But this success wasn’t enough for my father. Having failed to learn some critical lessons from his earlier business failures in the 1960s and 1970s, he gambled the fortunes of his entire business on another new one, involving risky and questionable real estate and hotel deals back in St. Louis.
The Chez Louis cuisine style is French, kind of a happy compromise between the truly haute cuisine, which can be overwhelmingly rich, and the truly nouvelle, in which a food processor grinds everything into the texture and taste of baby food. Sauces are light, with a beautifully modulated touch of herbs and spices and a base that involves the reduced stock of the meat or fish. Vegetables are cooked quickly to retain color and flavor. And then there's the presentation, which is glorious. Each morsel is perfectly arranged on the plate, colors are right and the feeling can be that the dish is too pretty to eat – until the first whiff of savory herbs tingles the palate and stimulates the salivary glands.
At Chez Louis we had a menu that takes a lot of preparation. I always felt we should offer the simpler foods that are most common in France. They may sound pedestrian to some, but these are the dishes many French people still eat every day.
Knowing the appeal of salads for Americans and, of course, sandwiches, I thought it would be fun to present a salad sandwich.
The concept of a charcuterie is still strange to St. Louis. The way people live here is more leisurely than, say, New York or Chicago. They don't feel the necessity to come to a specific shop to buy specific types of prepared foods. Bad habits are easier than good ones, you know. It is easier to get all your food items at one place. Americans are not like Europeans who go to each little store and specify the exact items they want.
It's a natural extension to marry the restaurants with a small hotel. In Europe, food is the main reason for the success or failure of a hotel, while in this country it's often neglected with the rooms becoming the focal point.

Meyer also planed to open a 300-room "world-class" hotel in the heart of Clayton.

I like doing new things. We've got a parcel of land. We've also got serious interest on the part of several chains to manage it. I can't yet tell you where it will be.
I like to think of it as a classy, little neighborhood joint. It has a life of its own apart from its neighbor, Chez Louis. While Chez Louis has tablecloths, fine service and is a creative, fairly sophisticated restaurant, Bernard's is a bistro serving a simple tradition of casual food. We have a good breakfast and lunch trade ― especially lunch. And to do a good lunch business in Clayton, you have to have a product that tastes good, is a good value, is fresh and fast. In the evening, we have a good crowd, as well, and we're also attracting the late night crowd after they attend a movie or the theater.
He owned two hotels in St. Louis, one of which ― the Seven Gables Inn, with its French restaurant, Chez Louis ― met with critical acclaim. But the other hotel ― the Daniele Hilton, with its mediocre London Grill ― was a failure on every count. My father had leveraged his entire company to purchase these hotels, and also to purchase a medical building in Clayton which he planned to reimagine and redevelop into something big. However, by the time he had emptied the building of its existing rent-paying tenants, the bottom had fallen out of the economy. His funders dropped out, but not before suing him. Although Dad may have been an inventive entrepreneur, he did not have the necessary emotional skills or discipline, and he failed to surround himself with enough competent, loyal, trustworthy colleagues whose skills and strengths would have compensated for his own weaknesses. By 1990, shortly before he died of lung cancer at the age of fifty-nine, he was once again bankrupt. Once again, he had to inform his family ― his second wife, Vivian, and his three children and their spouses ― about a failure. We all had a painful sense of deja vu.

Louis Bernard Gigondas

Louis Bernard Gigondas

$ 25.99

Today, Gigondas is a dark, almost black-red wine, powerful and earthy but with a great depth of raspberry fruit. As it evolves over time, it takes on a nose of pitted fruits, spices and licorice. On the palate, it retains its robust flavor but becomes more balanced.

The soils here are ancient alluvials made from red clay mixed with rocks, often terraced on slopes. There are 3,088 acres under production and a yield limit of three tons per acre (the same limitation placed the Burgundy Grand Cru). Approximately 90% of wine bearing the Gigondas name is red and the remainder is rosé. It is considered one of the strongest reds produced in the region and is always a blend of varietals, the dominant one being Grenache, filled out with Syrah or Mourvedre. Once used as a “booster” wine to improve weak Burgundy (much in the same way Hermitage was used to strengthen Bordeaux), Gigondas earned its own appellation d’origine controllée in 1971.

Opaque purple colour. Expressive bouquet of jammy dark fruit and spices. Full, well-balanced with a floral nuance adding complexity.Concentrated and full-bodied mouth with firm tannins and a long complex finish

Description

Additional information, winemaker notes.

Since 1976, Louis Bernard has united winemakers of the Rhone Valley in a common project: to devote the best of their wine and savoir-faire to producing great wines. With production throughout the Cotes du Rhone region, Louis Bernard remains dedicated to showcasing the unique characteristics of each terroir while producing exquisite, world-class wines.

La Chartreuse de Bonpas is a medieval fortified convent located near Avignon in the Provence region of France, on the Durance River. According to legend, the area was originally called “Maupas” (bad passage) because it was dominated by dangerous bandits. In the 12th century, a holy man named Sibertius arrived with soldiers, built a convent, and chased away the evil bandits. Thus, the name was changed from “Maupas” to “Bonpas” (good passage) and became known as a safe haven allowing travelers a secure crossing of the Durance River .

Today, this historic monument is surrounded by 45 acres of A.O.C. Cotes du Rhone vineyards and is home to Louis Bernard. Visitors can tour the chapel, stroll in the beautiful French-style gardens, and enjoy wine tasting in the ancient cellar.

Wine Type and Color

Primary Grape

Grenache is the French name for the red grape known as Garnacha in Spain and Cannonau in Italy. Today, Grenache is the star of red blends in France's Southern Rhône Valley, reaching its pinnacle in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is widely grown in Spain, where it's dominant in Priorat and a component of blends with Tempranillo in Rioja and other regions. Cannonau is one of the main grapes in Italy's Sardinia. It also has a growing presence in the New World, in places like California and Australia.

Luxury fashion retailer Louis Vuitton is opening spots to tour its handbag workshop just south of Fort Worth.

Guests will tour the 105-acre Louis Vuitton Rochambeau Ranch in Alvarado as part of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton’s Les Journées Particulières , which translates to special days. This is the fifth time the company has done tours of its stores and manufacturing facilities.

Fifty-seven brands across 93 locations in 15 countries will open to the public, and the tours are free. Registration begins Thursday and ends Oct. 3 for one-hour tours on Oct. 14, 15 and 16. There will be five tours each day.

Les Journées Particulières is designed to show the company’s heritage and craftsmanship and attract new talent to enter a LVMH specialty.

“It offers a rare opportunity to visit the actual locations where the magic occurs and gain precious insights into how our artisans shape dreams that, in turn, make our world a more beautiful place to be in,” said Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH, in a statement.

The luxury goods maker has a firm presence in North Texas.

In September 2021 , Louis Vuitton acquired a 160,000-square-foot property at 2901 Kinwest Parkway office campus in Las Colinas. According to documents filed with the state at the time, Louis Vuitton plans to renovate the property into a customer service center.

Louis Vuitton has a call center and other offices at 4200 Regent Blvd. in Irving. And the firm, which has its U.S. headquarters in New York, also has offices in Colleyville.

Former President Donald Trump, daughter Ivanka, her husband, Jared Kushner, and three top Cabinet officials visited the facility in 2019 when the handbag factory had just opened.

At the time, the facility employed 150 workers making purses and backpacks that sell for $1,400 to $2,200 apiece. The workshop produces popular styles, including Neverfull, Artsy, Iena, Graceful, Palm Spring and Neo Noe.

All U.S. based Louis Vuitton artisans undergo extensive training programs followed by years of apprenticeship to master the craft of making luxury leather goods with the same quality as those produced in Europe.

In July, the company reported almost $36 billion in sales for the first half of 2022, up 28% for the same period last year.

“We approach the second half of the year with confidence, but given the current geopolitical and health situation, we will remain vigilant and count on the agility and talent of our teams to further strengthen our global leadership position in luxury goods in 2022,” Arnault said in a statement at the time.

LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton represents 75 “houses,” or brands, of wine and spirits, fashion and leather goods, perfume and cosmetics, watches, jewelry and more. The company has 156,000 employees globally, with 33,000 in the U.S. The company has 780 retail stores in the U.S. and six production sites.

Introduction: Left-sided infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious infection with a heavy burden for patients and healthcare system. Oral switch after initial intravenous antibiotic therapy may reduce costs and improve patients' discomfort without increasing unfavourable outcomes. We describe the methodology of two simultaneously conducted open-label randomised trials aiming to assess non-inferiority of oral switch as compared with entirely intravenous antibiotic therapy for the treatment of left-sided IE.

Methods and analysis: Two simultaneous multicentre open-label prospective randomised trials assessing non-inferiority of oral switch during antibiotic treatment as compared with entirely intravenous therapy in patients with left-sided IE are ongoing. One trial is dedicated to left-sided IE caused by multisusceptible staphylococci (Relais Oral Dans le traitement des Endocardites à staphylocoques ou streptOcoques (RODEO)-1) and the other is dedicated to left-sided IE caused by susceptible streptococci or enterococci (RODEO-2). It is planned to randomise 324 patients in each trial after an initial course of at least 10 days of intravenous antibiotic therapy either to continue intravenous antibiotic therapy or to switch to oral antibiotic therapy. The primary outcome is treatment failure within 3 months after the end of antibiotic treatment, a composite outcome defined by all-cause death and/or symptomatic embolic events and/or unplanned valvular surgery and/or microbiological relapse (with the primary pathogen). Secondary outcomes include patient quality of life, echocardiographic outcome, costs and efficiency associated with IE care. Statistical analysis will be performed with a non-inferiority margin of 10% and a one-sided 2.5% type I error.

Ethics and dissemination: Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants. This study was approved by Tours Research ethics committee (CPP TOURS-Region Centre-Ouest 1, 2015-R26, 23 February 2016). Study findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated through presentation at relevant national and international conferences.

Trial registration number: EudraCT Number: 2015-002371-16 and NCT02701608 ; NCT02701595 .

Keywords: adult; anti-bacterial agents; infective endocarditis; oral administration; randomised controlled trial.

Information

The Bernard Pub hosted more punk rock shows than any place in the St. Louis area. The building at 4063 Lafayette had been around for at least half a century when the Peppes family purchased it in 1952 when it housed a confectionery, a cleaner, a beauty parlor, and four upstairs apartments. In the 1970s Bill Peppes, known to a generation of punks as Bill Bernard, opened a bar and grill featuring blues/rock musicians such as local legend Rockin’ Robin, whose silhouette graced the side door for decades. On July 18, 1980, after searching for a place for local punk bands to play, Anti-mation and Surgery played the first punk show at The Bernard Pub. For the next decade Bernard’s hosted everyone from Agnostic Front, Henry Rollins, Fugazi, 7 Seconds, Social Distortion, SNFU, MDC, Warzone, and UK Subs. At some point John Green came on board and booked nearly every local punk band in St. Louis on famously packed bills. By the end of the decade the neighborhood was too dangerous to continuing booking shows. In 1990 Bill closed the club and John Green opened a new Bernard Pub at 214 Morgan on Laclede's Landing. The building on Lafayette stood empty until February 4, 1995 when a single engine plane crashed through the roof. Luckily no one in the plane or on the ground were injured. The damage was so severe that Bill had to have the building razed. An empty lot is all that is left of the club today.
