I have seen Lucero as an opening act a few times before and always enjoyed their sets but have always wanted to see them headline so I could really get a sense of what they can do. When the show at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, NJ was announced I bought tickets for myself and a buddy who I turned them on to. We both enjoyed the performance and especially the energy they brought to the stage. Looking forward to the next time I can get to see them, might even have to make a trip to Memphis for their annual Family Picnic.

Lucero and Flogging Molly at The Fillmore, Detroit last night. First, this theater, The Fillmore, after a recent renovation is spectacular. To be honest, I came to see Lucero, a band described as, "an American Alt Country Punk Rock band", which may help someone with a category, but hardly describes their brilliance. If you think Little Feat, Wilco, Drive by Truckers, Jason Isbell--you're in the right neighborhood. From Memphis and led by Ben Nichols, who looks like a guy who has been ridden hard and come up wet with a whiskey glass in his hard, a tortured soul who writes lyrics that fully explain failed love, life's desperate indifference to circumstance and the redemption of music. Oh yeah and rips on guitar. When I read about the bands that the band members had previously played with, I was impressed. Very tight growling alt country prowess, and Ben's voice is one of those, (Joe Cocker, Rod stewart), with a perpetual guttural growl that conveys heartbreak and wonder and joy. They have been around since '98, a hard touring road band and their latest album, "Among the Ghosts" is brilliant. So, I was happy, a little annoyed with the constant noise and chatter through Lucero's set, but, OK. I guess I'll stick around and see this "Flogging Molly" crew. I had noticed that 1) it was sold out, and 2) there were a lot of guys and gals in what only be succinctly described as Irish punk garb; kilts, safety pins, shaved heads, pony tails, lots of black t shirts and a fair share of irish-cap-soccer-hooligan-two-fisted-beer-drinkers, hanging out in the lobby. The Fillmore is designed to have standing only on the main floor, now with well placed railings, hard wood floors, and a large beautiful bar at the back for those who have main floor tickets. It was packed. Above are balcony boxes and two mezzanine levels, where I was. I'd seen the Pogues, The Dropkick Murphys---so no big deal, right? Wrong. First the level of amped up palpable anticipation rifling through this crowd was, intense. Then as the pre-show music shifted to The Clash, something was afoot when it became louder and louder and segued into The Who's "Teenage Wasteland", you remember, right? "Out here in the fields
I fight for my meals
I get my back into my living
I don't need to fight
To prove I'm right
I don't need to be forgiven..."
Louder and louder, one of the greatest defiant anthems of rock and roll that ends with a violin driven Celtic jig. When that ends, Flogging Molly has assembled on stage, plugged in and ready, and LAUNCHES into their first punk irish tune, and the crowd is at full tilt frothing at the mouth mode. A bit about Flogging Molly first. Around since '97 and lead by the hyperkinetic Dublin born Dave King, a collection of players that are incredibly tight with an accordion and violin part of every song, they can play an irish lullaby or a bone crushing puk assault, all with Celtic charm and overtones, with a frenetic pace that is---exhilarating. Dave King's influences include The Clash and Johnny Cash, The Pogues and Green Day, and elements of all are on display at the heart of what is uniquely Molly's own. And about that name, in their early days they were the house band at an Irish joint called Molly Malone's in L.A., hence the name. Any performer who calls out to the crowd to "raise your hands in the air", would envy these guys. When Dave raised his arms with rhythmic sway over his head: every single f-ing hand was in the air, immediately in perfect sync. The balcony mezzanine was bouncing so much I wondered about structural integrity, or maybe an earthquake. And the songs are rock solid punked up jovial, wisecracking, lyrical echos of the Irish soul, (Yeats, Wilde, Joyce), and delivered with frollicking good natured fun and jigs all around. In the center of the standing room only floor is was a mosh pit of bouncing, pogoing, ruffians--not hurting anybody--but gleefully pounding into each other, like it was the only way they could listen. There last album is excellent, (just listened), "Life is Good", released last year. Look, I could have made this shorter, but then again I couldn't. Lucero is touring with them here and over to Europe. I know I always say this, but, seriously don't miss this show if they descend on your town.
Amazing is an understatement!! Once again, Ben and the boys have put on an incredible performance. They played for two hours straight, and it was two hours of soulful, passionate music. I was turned into this band by my boyfriend two years ago and I drove two hours to see them. They never disappoint that’s for sure, but something about this performance made it seem like the best one yet!! Thanks Lucero for making the night rock into the morning, and for your phenomenal talent! I’ll be at the next show!!

Lucero To Tour Europe With Frank Turner
Tuesday, 11th June 2013
Frank Turner audiences in parts of Europe that aren't the UK are in for a treat with Lucero set to be supporting Frank on his upcoming European tour. Here's where :-
Lucero – Should’ve Learned by Now
Lucero - should've learned by now, flyctory.com pros.
- Nice blend of country, rock and punl
- Wide range of songs
Flyctory.com Cons
- Weaker than the predecessor
Another Lucero review: some one year ago, I fell in love with When You Found Me by the Memphis -origin band, which is blending country music elements with punk and rock . On 24th February 2023, they are back with a new album: here are my thoughts about Should’ve Learned by Now.
Lucero – About The Artists
My When You Found Me review already includes some bio information about the quintet, so I refer to this posting. Should’ve Learned by Now is already the band’s twelfth studio album, 23 years after their debut The Attic Tapes
Lucero – Should’ve Learned by Now – Track by Track
The ten track album lasts 38 minutes.
1. One Last F.U.
The first song is already guaranteeing the Explicit Lyrics sticker on the album cover. Guitar riffs and cowbell pings introduce the opener. Thereafter, Lucero just keeps on rocking with their new, unique music texture. Cool opener, in which Ben Nichols and his characteristic voice is just creating a great presence.
2. Macon If We Make It
Macon If We Make It slightly reduces the speed and the rock intensity, compared to the opener. This leads to a stronger country-rock touch. The guitars are howling at the end of the chorus – and I am smiling during the listen.
3. She Leads Me
After Should’ve Learned By Now opened with two single releases, this 4:40 minute track is the first really “new” track to Lucero fans. The rather slow song feels comparably close to mainstream country music. The keyboard limes give a very special touch to the songs. Nice.
4. At The Show
At The Show is a track for rock’n’roll fans with a country music heart. The song is like a blend of the best parts of these music worlds. Ben Nichols again is creating the very special touch of this listen.
5. Nothing’s Alright
The fifth track is rather moving towards punk-alike tunes. The song has a certain roughness, but I like this straight, rather fast guitar smasher. I am sure that this one is a cool listen on a Lucero live show.
6. Raining For Weeks
This song is indeed a special one the album. While Ben Nichols is stating that It’s been raining here for weeks , you feel the angriness and desperation in the song. The melody is very monotonous and dark, the guitars just do what is needed. However, there is a certain contrast on the piano sound, which is playing a rather happy ditty.
7. Buy A Little Time
The seventh track is another one for the country rock fans. However, the song cannot hide a punk-rock soul in the chorus as well. Nice showcase for the guitar players – and simply a good listen.
8. Should’ve Learned By Now
Hardly any song illustrates the wide range of the Lucero sound as good as the title track. It feels dirty and hard, like hard rock. It also has rather gentle moments. And there is the Americana heart as well as the bold soul of a punk rock song. Do I like it? Damn yes, I do!
9. Drunken Moon
The second last song is taking the mandatory role of the ballad of the album. Beautiful, slow listen, which illustrate that these Tennessee guys are also good in emotional moments.
10. Time To Go Home
That’s definitely a good title for the chucker-out of the album, ain’t it? Time To Go Out comes with steel guitar sounds and a lot of country music soul. Nice one.

Here is the album on Spotify:
Lucero – Should’ve Learned by Now – My View
Like the predecessor release, I really enjoyed listening to Lucero’s 2023 album. Nonetheless, I feel that Should’ve Learned by Now is weaker than When I Found You . Thus, there is no Top Pick! rating this time. But I still feel it is an album absolutely worth listening.

Happy 25th anniversary to Lucero, with incredibly fond memories of the new, slow, quietly crushing jams they brought to humid Belvedere shows in Little Rock back in 1998.

Scandinavia Explorer
Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Although memories aren't. Thank you. What a charming almost fairy tale intro to Norway, Sweden, and Finland! Tom and Sherry Miller from U.S.A.

Balkan Adventure (14 Days)
An excellent trip with an outstanding tour director (Sarah Rossi) and highly skilled bus driver (Bruno). Plenty of option excursion choices along with very good included tours with knowledgeable local guides. The only down side were two of the hotels - Hotel Marinela, Sofia Bulgaria, and Mercure Belgrade Excelsior - that were in desperate need of refurbishment not to mention functioning air conditioning and bathroom cleaning. Otherwise, great trip.

Best of Ireland (10 Days)
It was fantastic! Our Travel Manager, James Creegan was excellent. He kept us ontrack the whole tour. Love his accent. Its obvious he is from Dublin. His knowlege of places, history, people, music was outstanding. He took us to a couple places off the beaten which I appreciated very much. We met some nice locals which made the experience even better. I would love to go on another of his tours again! Kris was a great tour bus driver. He made it into places I didn't think possible. He got us to our destinations safely. He and James, are very nice guys. I would go anywhere with James and Kris. I have dreamed about coming to Ireland all my life. This tour met and exceeded my expectations.

Spectacular Scandinavia & its Fjords (Classic, 15 Days)
The tour went beyond our expectations. Our tour director,Greg Colgin, was fantastic! He provided history, insights, funny stories, and ideas for further exploration. He, and driver, Ion, made critical decisions about our travel when weather and road conditions presented challenges. The tour included so much, as every day was loaded with adventure, including just enough free time for independent explorations. Our driver drove the bus with tremendous skill no matter the difficulties of the roads chosen. Everyone felt safe and secure.
Cycle the Danube
Tour guides/leaders were incredible...very knowledgeable of the area and history and culture and food! The final stay in Budapest at the Star City Hotel was disappointing...staff were stressed, aloof, and not customer service oriented ( in a positive way) Be nice to choose a true 4 star hotel for the last night of the trip

We had the best time and the very best tour guide. He was knowledgeable about every place he took us. He also gave us time to ourselves at each place so we could shop or just look around. My husband & I want to go back again and hopefully get the same tour director. We got to see everything we wanted to see and more, met wonderful new friends and I can't stress enough that this was thanks to the best tour director we could have had. Thank you Granluca for a holiday we will never forget!
