My desire to see the world began from a young age and my wanderlust has taken me to many places since, though none has struck me quite like India. My love of the Subcontinent began when I traveled overland from Chennai to Delhi back in 2011, where I had the opportunity to see some extraordinary places, meet some incredible people and of course eat delicious and surprisingly varied food.

What our Guests Have Said

  • "Ellis did a superb job. Her personal knowledge and attention to detail made a big difference and she really seemed to have thought things through as if it was her own holiday." V.C. - Apr 2023
  • "The attention to detail, curating the experiences, and knowledge of remote destinations puts Scott Dunn at the front of travel." M.M. - Mar 2023
  • "We were delighted with the service we received from Scott Dunn. It was the trip of a lifetime for us. The success of our trip was a reflection of the high level of expertise about India and getting the small details right." J.C. - Mar 2023
  • "Flawless end to end delivery of the itinerary. A nice balance of your time and personal time. Excellent local guides. Awesome from start to finish." A.T. - May 2023

FAQs about our India luxury vacations

When is the best time to go to india.

The best time to go to India is from October to March when the weather tends to be warmer and drier – without being too hot. However, it’s important to note that during December and January, certain regions like Rajasthan will experience cooler weather and increased chances of fog.

For shoulder seasons and excellent value for money, April to May is an excellent time to visit, although humidity increases along with the chance for thunderstorms.

If you’re determined to travel between June through September, we recommend keeping to the foothills of the Himalayas , avoiding the monsoon season currently happening in India’s other regions.

Visit our best time to visit India  page to learn more about India’s climate and seasonal highlights.

What activities can I do on a vacation to India?

India is primarily a culture-focused vacation, so expect a lot of historical buildings and markets, incredible food tours, and native wildlife.

Get involved in traditional ceremonies, explore cities on privately guided walking tours, and hike India’s countryside while immersing yourself in village life. These are just a few of the activities you can expect to do on a luxury vacation to India.

Check out the rest of the unique experiences we offer on our vacations.

What's the best way to get around India?

Depending on where you are traveling between, we recommend transferring by private car, train (if the route allows) or internal flights.

For our guests who are traveling around Rajasthan, we usually arrange everything overland so they keep the same driver and just pick up different guides in each location. To get a glimpse at how it works, this itinerary is all overland until the final stop where we would then fly guests back to Delhi to fly back to their home destination.

Are luxury India vacations suitable for families?

Luxury India vacations are suitable for families , but ideally for those with older children. Not only are trips here more culturally-focused, meaning less to keep little ones engaged, but the cuisine and accommodation aren’t necessarily set up to support the travel of young or infant children.

That said, India vacations make for some of the most memorable family trips. With a culture so vibrant and unique, it’s one of those destinations that will have you and your loved ones gawking in awe at all that surrounds you and eagerly talking late into the night about what’s to come.

To get an idea of a family trip to India, here’s our sample family itinerary .

Can I book a luxury India vacation for my honeymoon?

Absolutely! Our travel specialists are always on hand to create your perfect honeymoon in India .

India exudes romance and adventure, and that’s not only because it has one of the world's most romantic monuments . From lush beaches and intrepid safaris to gorgeous sites in Rajasthan, a honeymoon in India doesn’t just tick off a bucket-list destination, it offers a taste of so many different types of experiences that you’ll get to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime occasion.

Where do your India luxury vacations fly from?

Guests can get to most major cities in India from the US. There are direct flights from New York, Chicago, and San Francisco to Delhi, Newark to Mumbai, and Seattle or San Francisco to Bangalore.

Regardless of where you are in the US, we can arrange your travel to India, taking the hassle out of long-haul flights and organizing any connections on your behalf.

Himanshu and his team did a wonderful job. My mother wanted to visit India for the first time to celebrate her 90th birthday!! My mother, 2 of my friend’s and I engaged Himanshu to organise a private tour. Bout India Tours listened to my requests and incorporated all our needs into a 16 day wondrous adventure that gave my mother undeniable joy and happiness. Thanks everyone at Bout India

A trip to south india.

Bout India provides a wonderful and a very high level of service. From the route planning stage through its implementation on the ground, Himanshu and his staff were attentive, flexible, and fully aware of the customer satisfactory. Very recommended.

Indian adventure with my daughter.

WOW, where do I start?  Firstly from the first email from Himanshu Maru I knew I was dealing with a very professional company. All the places that I asked to visit were tailored exactly to our wishes. The hotels were very good, the beautiful summer palace in Jodhpur was spectacular. All the guides were very knowledgeable and pleasant. The drivers and vehicles were great. The drivers took care of us and gave us a feeling of comfort and security. The cars were always spotless, with good supplies of cold bottled water We had the most amazing 18 days and Loved everything we did and saw. Himanshu met up with us in Agra.... Read More

Highly personalised tour.

We had a tour for 3 people at the 'comfort' level, and I can't imagine what additional service comes with the luxury level, because we were extremely comfortable. Himanshu and his team arranged beautiful hotels for us (including personalising according to our request of smaller hotels where we could get to know the staff), and everywhere we went we had local guides who really knew the monuments and had great pride in their city. We always had wonderful food (our favourite was when Himanshu took us on a street food tour of Jaipur), but were very well looked after and no one got sick throughout the entire t.... Read More

Leh - ladakh: the quaint monasteries & eternal bliss.

The entire 9 day tour was a wonderful experience. Traveling alone, it was agreed that I would have a driver but no guide however Himanshu met me at the airport and spent 5 days with me before returning to Jaipur. He did everything possible to make me feel special. The driver, Nunu was a very careful and considerate driver who added to the feeling of well-being. Accommodation and meals were excellent throughout. I would recommend Bout India to anyone traveling to India.

Beautiful kerala tour.

My friend and I had an amazing time touring for 8 days in Kerala with BoutIndia’s Managing Director, Himanshu. He is a wonderful photographer and took most of the photos so that I could enjoy the sites, scenery and non-stop action. The trip was a good mix of fun activities and exploration with down time to sit on balconies and admire the green hills and waterways. Himanshu was quick to adapt the trip when we had suggestions, and he taught us a great deal about the country and culture. Our driver was excellent as well. I hope to travel to the Himalayas with Himanshu and his company in the near future.

16 wonderful days in kerala.

I found Bout India through an internet search. Like anything unknown I was weary at first, but because of the immediate response I felt as though they were taking me seriously. Within days we had corresponded several times and had the basis of a tour. Himanshu was on hand at all times to help and advise - he was also not adverse to changing the programme, which happened several times. For 3 months we worked together to arrange our customised tour and when we arrived in India we were not disappointed. Everything that had been arranged - hotel reservations, flights, drivers - worked smoothly. The hotels were great and the .... Read More

Bout india is simply the best.

We just had the most amazing trip to India thanks to Bout India. We had been to India several times before and usually book our trips on our own, but for this trip using a destination expert was the way to go. In Rajasthan for example, we were not considering a visit to Ranthambhore National Park. But Himanshu and Charlie recommended it along with other stops and it turned out to be highlights of our trip. Spotting a tiger in the wild is rare, but Bout India arranged 3 safaris for us and we got lucky! The drivers they arranged for us were professional, knowledgeable and a pleasure to travel with. The accommodations they a.... Read More

Great trip.

The experience we had with “bout.india” was outstanding! We have never been in India and initially relied completely on the travel suggestions from “bout.india”. The itinerary later changed a few times because we wanted to go to some different places as well as skip some of the suggested stops. The communications with Himanchu, one of the owners of the travel agency, were frequent and detailed. The company provided a very detailed itinerary including descriptions, pictures and advice. We always had a driver who picked us up in a recent Toyota SUV at the respective airports or train station, frequently waiting .... Read More

A family tour through rajastan and the golden triangle.

Very efficient and professional. In the beginning I had some doubts about the payments; we are living in the Netherlands, we were in contact with a travel company in India. Everything went very well. At the end of my holiday the local company paid several hotels for us which were only invoiced after the end of my trip. BOUT INDIA is very honest and reliable.

We were a group of 5 friends. After many mails between Holland, Bali and India , Bout India tours made a nine days trip for us. A trip with many variations. Off course the highlights and also things like markets, nature and connections with Indian people. Bout India Tours was of great assistance for us. The guides ware adequate, our driver was safe and very kind.  We liked very much the flexibility of our trip.

Most memorable trip to india and the himalayas.

This review is long overdue. Vinny and Himanchu listened keenly to understand what we were looking for and then worked tirelessly to create an itinerary that was perfect for my family and I. Indeed we remember it as one of the best vacations we've taken. Our visit from Delhi to Leh to Nubra Valley to Agra to Jaipur and back to Delhi was carefully orchestrated with all the comforts and amenities that allowed for a 1st class travel excursion. We had local guides knowledgeable with the local attractions along the way and Himachu accompanied us on all the domestic travel - both flights and train. It was a delig.... Read More

Incredible first trip to India!

My husband and I booked our first trip to India through Bout India Tours in March/April 2016 and had an amazing introduction to a country we had always dreamed of seeing. Rather than the typical tourist group experience with a busload of other people, we were accompanied during part of the journey with the wonderful founder of Bout India and spent the rest of it by ourselves with a private car and driver. Though we started out with a planned itinerary, they really customized our journey as they got to know us, resulting in an even more perfect trip. Bout india tours are exceptional.

We booked a custom 28 day trip through out India with Bout India. It was a wonderful trip! Great guides and drivers, wonderful hotels and restaurants! We were met at each airport by our guide and driven door to door to our destinations and hotels. We focused on UNESCO world heritage sites. One of our guides told us that we have seen more Hindu Temples than 99% of Hindu’s. I. Would strongly recommend Bout India especially if you want a custom trip organized to meet your needs.

India Tours

Breathtaking view of Taj Mahal from distance, Agra, India

Private and Luxury India Tours

Any tour to India is sure to be an adventure. That is inherent in the nature of this land, which is at once mind-boggling and inspiring, imperfect and incredible.

From north to south, India’s geography is captivating. At hill stations in  Himachal Pradesh  wake up to views of the snow-capped peaks of the mighty  Himalayas . The peninsula of India has a 4,600-mile-long coastline with a diverse range of sites:  Goa ’s sandy beaches, the mangroves of the  Sundarbans , historic seaside temples at  Mamallapuram . And there’s  Kanyakumari , the southernmost tip of India, where the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, and Bay of Bengal meet.

You may have heard the cliché that India is sheer chaos, and perhaps it is. But there is a method to its madness. Leave the uncovering of that pattern to Enchanting Travels’ experts, experienced in organizing private tours to India. From start to finish, all you need to do is trust, keep your mind open to having a blast, and drinking lots of chai.

Whichever direction you travel, India’s history, seen through its magnificent monuments, will leave you humbled and awestruck. In the southern state of  Tamil Nadu  witness religiosity and ritual at  Madurai ’s  Meenakshi Temple . Go west where  Rajasthan ’s Mehrangarh Fort, towering over the blue city of  Jodhpur , is a both palace and symbol of a medieval military tradition. In northern India the glory days of the  Mughal Empire  come alive in the monuments of places like  Fatehpur Sikri  and  Delhi . Plan at least two weeks to capture some of the marvels of this remarkable country, even if right now all you really want to do is to visit the  Taj Mahal .

Our experts can advise you on the  best time to visit India , what to see or do based on your interests, and create a personalized travel experience for you. Get in touch with us for your customized, obligation-free itinerary.

I was born and raised in India and the travel bug bit me quite early on in my life when I went on a backpacking trip. I am passionate about showing India to the world as I believe that the culture, landscape and history that one can experience in India is unparalleled. India is like a mini Europe where if you travel a few hundred miles in any direction, you reach a new region where the culture, language, and rituals are different. It’s truly a diverse country like no other.

Tanvir was an excellent guide who showed us the itinerised sites with professionalism and broad knowledge. He kept us well-informed, and was respectful of our needs at all times. We would recommend this 2-day tour to future travellers as it was well-organised and aptly led by Tanvir and his driver Devendra.

6 Night / 7 Day Kerala Tour Package Tour

6 Night / 7 Day Kerala Tour Package

I booked for this “small group tour” 4 or 5 days before its starting date. In 24 hours, my booking was confirmed. On my first day of the tour, it was revealed that because no one else has signed up for these days, I was the only member of the tour, the driver will be my mate for the entire trip. I called the driver a driver, not a guide, because you would expect storytelling, experience sharing, maybe some form of entertainment by the guide. But he speaks rather basic English, with heavy accent. Our conversation’s limited almost exclusively to driving and eating arrangements. A few times we went through phone calls with a friend of his who speaks decent English. The driver made stops at friends’ herbal medicine garden, antique shop, Jeep safari, ... etc. The friends are usually friendly and respectful, so as long as you feel comfortable haggling, you will likely enjoyed the experience. A few things about the four hotels I spent nights at. Only one of them had a working WiFi that I could use. One of them had water turning cold a few minutes into a shower, and occasional power outages. But otherwise they are good hotels. Most of places listed on the itinerary require separate entrance tickets. So be prepared. Overall, the experience has been interesting for me. I learned quite a bit about the places, the local people, the tourism industry. If you consider yourself somewhat adventurous, and have a little flexibility with budget, this could be a good experience.

7 Days Tadoba, Nagzira and Pench Wildlife Safari Tour from Nagpur Tour

7 Days Tadoba, Nagzira and Pench Wildlife Safari Tour from Nagpur

We went on a 7-day wildlife safari tour to Tadoba, Nagzira, and Pench National Parks from Nagpur and it was an experience of a lifetime. The tour was organized by a local tour company and I must say, they did an excellent job. Day 1: We arrived in Nagpur and were greeted by our tour guide who gave us a brief introduction about the tour. We then headed to Tadoba National Park, which was about a 3-hour drive from Nagpur. On the way, we stopped at a local restaurant for lunch and the food was delicious. Once we reached Tadoba, we checked into our accommodation and spent the evening exploring the nearby areas. Day 2-4: These three days were spent exploring the Tadoba National Park. Our guide was very knowledgeable and took us to the best spots for wildlife sightings. We were lucky enough to spot tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and a variety of bird species. The park is well-maintained and the safari experience was truly amazing. We also visited the Tadoba Lake, which was a beautiful sight. Day 5: We left Tadoba and headed to Nagzira National Park. This park is known for its diverse flora and fauna and we were not disappointed. We saw a wide variety of animals and birds including the Indian bison, sambar deer, and many more. The highlight of the day was spotting a family of wild dogs, which is a rare sighting. Day 6: Our last stop was Pench National Park, which is a popular tiger reserve. We went on a morning and evening safari and were lucky enough to spot a tiger on both drives. The park is known for its dense forest and we enjoyed the scenic beauty as well. Day 7: We headed back to Nagpur and our tour came to an end. We were sad to leave but we had an unforgettable experience. The tour company also arranged for our airport transfer and made sure we had a comfortable journey back. Overall, the 7-day Tadoba, Nagzira, and Pench wildlife safari tour was a well-organized and enjoyable experience. The tour company took care of all the arrangements and our guide was excellent. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves wildlife and wants to explore the beauty of central India. The memories from this trip will stay with me forever.

I recently had the amazing opportunity to experience the 14 Day Golden Triangle Tours with 3 Renowned National Park of Tigers (ALL INCLUSIVE) tour. Luxury Golden Triangle Tour with Ranthambore Tour

Luxury Golden Triangle Tour with Ranthambore

Excellent driver. Excellent breakfasts at all hotels. Accommodation was very good except for a windowless room we had in Delhi. We arrived in Delhi at 5.40 am, well before checkin. We were met and taken to the hotel where they gave us a room to rest in till ours was available. This was much appreciated as we had been travelling for 24 hours. The cultural places we visited were amazing and we had ample time to take it each site. All guides were good.

What people love about Luxury Active Tours in India

Overall it was a good trip. I have a reliable driver for my entire trip myself. The organizer, Mr Sanjeev, did some good suggestions as how to, for a trip to suit my case. Have had some misunderstanding about money at the end but was sorted out ok.
We went on the 8 Days Kipling's Kanha & Sunderbans Tiger Tour from Mumbai and it was an absolutely amazing experience. The trip was all-inclusive and included all meals, accommodation and transportation, so it was really convenient and stress-free. We started the tour with a visit to Kanha National Park, which was truly breathtaking. The lush green surroundings, the beautiful wildlife and the stunning scenery made the experience unforgettable. We were lucky enough to spot some tigers, which was really exciting. We then moved on to Sunderbans National Park, where we stayed for a few days. The park is home to the world's largest mangrove forest and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We were able to take part in some wildlife safaris and boat rides, which was really exciting. We also got to see some rare species of birds and animals. Overall, I had an amazing time on the 8 Days Kipling's Kanha & Sunderbans Tiger Tour from Mumbai. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure.

Two nights in the tropical backwaters of Kerala

With the Western Ghats towering to the east and the Arabian Sea flowing out from the west, Kerala is one of India’s most verdant and beautiful states. Crisscrossing this green lung are the backwaters that snake their way through towns and villages. Teeming with aquatic life and providing an invaluable resource to all who sit on their banks, these waterways have helped create an impossibly lush pocket of India, where palm-fringed beaches and tranquil waterways have earned it the moniker, God’s Own Country.

Where you could stay

Keralan Backwaters

luxury tours in india

Sat on a little peninsula on the western banks of Lake Vembanad, Vismaya is a historic timber house that dates back over three centuries.

Painstaking restored with contemporary luxuries subtly introduced, it is now an exclusive use villa with two bedrooms, a double and a twin, each air conditioned with en suite bathrooms.

The property is surrounded by typically lush Keralan gardens and features an expansive granite swimming pool and peaceful coconut grove with hammocks to soak up serene views across the lake.

Meals – with freshly caught fish bought straight from local fishermen – can be served wherever takes your fancy, be it out on the veranda, in the lounge, poolside or in the gazebo.

From the villa’s private jetty embark on meandering boat tours of the backwaters, or borrow bicycles to explore the surrounding countryside. Village walks can also be arranged as can visits to nearby temples, churches and Alleppey town.

Marari Beach

luxury tours in india

On the shores of the Arabian Sea and close to the famed backwaters of Alleppey, this verdant resort is beautifully placed to explore the best of Kerala.

There are 30 villas set in the sprawling gardens, each a luxurious blend of modern and traditional Keralan design with private pools, lavish bathrooms and walk-in dressing rooms.

A major draw here is the stunning Ayurveda spa which offers a huge range of treatments and tailored wellness programs using age-old practices, with a focus on rejuvenation, stress management and detoxing combined with personalised Ayurveda diets.

For those seeking to explore, take bicycle rides around local villages for a glimpse into rural lifestyles in this beautiful corner of India, discover the Jewish and colonial history of the region on historical excursions, explore sacred temples or visit the nearby Kumarakom bird sanctuary. There are also daily yoga sessions, the peaceful Marari beach and the Carnoustie’s own wonderful houseboat for private lunch and evening cruises along the backwaters.

Making the most of the surrounding water and its bounty, the Chimaera restaurant serves up the freshest seafood while Ida has something for everyone. Being a resort dedicated to body and mind, there’s no alcohol available.

Sat on a beautiful farm island on land reclaimed from the backwaters of Lake Vambanad, is Philipkutty’s Farm. A family home where the emphasis is on welcoming people into the fold, a stay here is to experience Keralan hospitality at its finest.

Each of the six spacious villas are named after local plants, trees and birds and look out over the peaceful backwaters. Decor is simple but homely with tiled floors, wooden ceilings and antique furniture. Windows and doors flood the villas with natural light and a verandah is the perfect spot from which to sit back and watch life on the river.

A thatched pavilion on stilts overlooks the farm and is where communal meals are served. As a working farm, there is plenty of local produce and delicious meals are made using coconuts, vegetables, fruit and spices grown in the garden and freshly caught fish. Take a walk through the plantations, making friends with the hens, duck and geese that call the farm home.

The family residence is set apart from the villas to ensure total privacy, but they are always happy to chat to guests. The lush, green surroundings provide the perfect haven in which to simply relax and unwind but there are also cooking classes, sunset cruises and outdoor activities for those who wish to explore the beautiful Keralan backwaters.

luxury tours in india

Surrounded by paddy fields and mangroves and nestled on the banks of Lake Vembanad, Kumarakom Lake Resort is a collection of villas that seamlessly blend traditional charm with modern luxury.

Each of the villas have been reconstructed the traditional homesteads of Keralan villages, many of them lovingly reassembled from the original materials. High ceilings, tiled floors and huge windows keep the villas cool and flood them with natural light while open-air bathrooms . Some come with private plunge pools and Jacuzzis while others sit along a meandering 250m pool that weaves its way through the resort.

The eight-sided Ettukettu restaurant was originally commissioned by King Marthanda Varma as a gift to his favourite martial arts tutor, and has been dismantled and restored piece by piece in its new location at the hotel. Being in the heart of Kerala’s backwaters means fresh fish is in abundance at the seafood bar, which is one of the best places to watch the sunset. There is also a traditional tea shop set among the verdant gardens.

An infinity pool looks out over the shimmering lake and there is an Ayurvedic spa for when you want to relax and unwind. For those who want to explore, there are guided walks and bikes to hire as well as boat cruises and fishing trips.

A delicious cooking class at Philipkutty's Farm

Philipkutty’s Farm is a working farm that exists on reclaimed land from Lake Vembanad, below the level of the backwaters. Explore the farm, learning about the organic and sustainable methods used to grow coconut, spices and bananas, and fish for giant prawns and scampi in the canals. You’ll learn how to cook typical Kerala dishes which are well known for their fresh, bold flavours.

Peaceful houseboat cruising through the backwaters

Kerala is affectionately known as God’s Own Country, and as you glide along the network of lakes, rivers and canals that make up the backwaters, it’s easy to see why. A houseboat is a great way to explore rural Indian life while enjoying the shade of the verdant green surroundings. You’ll transfer to a smaller canoe to explore the very narrow canals.

Two nights in Fort Cochin

Nestled on the north west tip of Cochin’s peninsula, Fort Cochin is a quaint coastal region with strong links to its colonial history. Having been under the rule of the Portuguese, Dutch and British, the town has a distinctly European feel, its narrow streets lined with cottages and bungalows.

During your time in the city you will explore Cochin’s Heritage Zone where colonial relics are scattered; the remains of Fort Immanuel and St. Francis church, both built by the Portuguese. You will also visit the Dutch Palace, Dutch cemetery, the synagogue in Mattancherry and the narrow streets lined with Dutch and British buildings, past antique shops and spice bazaars, before ending at the Chinese fishing nets to watch the sun set.

Fort Cochin

luxury tours in india

Over a century ago, Geo Brunton and Sons was one of the most respected shipbuilding companies in Cochin. Sat on the harbour and a proud reminder of this prestigious past, is Bruntons Boatyard, a beautiful boutique hotel full of character.

The hotel has been lovingly restored using the same brick, lime and terracotta building materials to ensure it keeps its Victorian charm. On arrival you will immediately be transported back to colonial India thanks to the arched wooden ceilings, tiled floors and traditional punkah fans gently whirring overhead. The walls are adorned with photos and prints of the old boatyard and Dutch maritime maps.

All of the hotel’s 22 rooms look out over the sea where every kind of vessel from small fishing boats to trade boats and cruise ships trace their way across the water. Keep you eyes peeled for the pods of dolphins that weave their way in and out of the waterway. Four poster beds and antique wooden furniture give the rooms plenty of character and some come with balconies from which you can sit and watch the world go by.

Fort Cochin is a melting pot of cultures and this is reflected in its cuisine, every dish on the menu representing one of the many communities that have called this beautiful town home. A rich mix of Indian, Portuguese, British, Dutch, Arabian and Jewish cuisine makes dining here a real treat and with the Chinese fishing nets just around the corner, seafood is a specialty. For afternoon refreshment enjoy a cup of tea in the tea lounge and come evening the Armoury Bar is the perfect place to sip on a expertly mixed cocktail or beer and enjoy a game of billiards.

The hotel’s garden is a calm, green refuge and the outdoor pool provides a refreshing break from the Kerelan sun. There is also an Ayurvedic massage centre for those moments when you simply want to drift away.

luxury tours in india

In the heart of beautiful Fort Cochin is the Old Harbour Hotel, whose Dutch and Portuguese influences are in keeping with the colonial charm of the town. The 300-year-old building, once the residence for employees of an English tea broking firm, has been lovingly restored with special care taken to preserve its original features.

With just 13 rooms, the hotel has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Its decor is simple yet elegant with a mix of antique furniture and pieces of art from the owner’s own collection. Rooms are named after the old streets of Fort Cochin and feature high ceilings, wooden or tiled floors and windows that look out over the courtyard or the iconic Chinese fishing nets. There are also garden cottages with open-air showers, a verandah and private pond.

The lush green garden is an oasis of calm; relax while listening to the breeze rush through the trees and the tinkle of the fountain, or cool off in the refreshing water of the swimming pool. With a large open-air terrace, Ayurvedic spa and daily yoga sessions it’s hard not to feel completely serene during your stay here.

The hotel’s proximity to the famed Chinese fishing nets means seafood here is always plentiful and fresh. Every evening there is a barbecue on which to cook the catch of the day as well as a menu of Indian classics made using organically grown vegetables.

An exciting Kathakali dance performance

Kathakali is a classical dance where the performers wear elaborate costumes and heavy make-up and is a popular form of entertainment in Kerala. Its name translates as ‘story play’ and the dances present themes derived from mythology and legend. We recommend arriving early so you can see the performers getting ready.

luxury tours in india

A peaceful cycling around Fort Cochin

Explore the areas of Fort Cochin and Mattancherry by riding down side streets, past the Chinese fishing nets, dhobi ghats (open air laundries), temples, churches, mosques, the beach and past spice warehouses — the air rich with the smell of dried ginger, cardamom and pepper. You’ll cycle for approximately 8 kilometers at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops.

Two nights of immersive experiences Mumbai

The capital of Maharashtra and India’s economic powerhouse, Mumbai, is a huge metropolis that’s home to over 22 million people. A melting pot of cultures, the affectionately named City of Dreams envelops all who come in a cloud of colour and sound, its energy undeniably contagious. Mumbaikars have a real love for life, which they live at quite a pace, and the best way to enjoy this city is to simply join them.

We can arrange for you to explore the city with at sunrise with resident guide, to fully understand its distinctive personality. Start at the grand Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus as the newspapers are sorted for delivery, milk vendors cycle past with huge canisters of milk and freshly baked bread is transported to shops. You’ll arrive at Sassoon Docks in time to see the Kohli fishermen pull in with the morning catch before making your way to the colourful flower market and Crawford fruit and vegetable market, where it is estimated 3000 tonnes of produce is traded every day.

luxury tours in india

Marine Drive is a sweeping crescent in the south of Mumbai that follows the curve of the bay. It is also known as the Queen’s Necklace thanks to the string of golden lights that twinkle like gems in the evening. The Oberoi Mumbai is a jewel of a hotel located on the Drive with spectacular views across the water.

The hotel is centred around the lobby, a bright and airy space tiled in white marble and featuring a black granite water feature. A huge skylight and floor-to-ceiling windows flood this space with natural light and at its centre is a stylish red piano.

Rooms come with large windows, through which guests can gaze out across the water and Marine Drive. Beautifully furnished with silk armchairs, mother of pearl dressing tables and walls adorned with antique lithographs, rooms and suites have plenty of style and all the special touches you’d expect from a luxury hotel.

When it comes to dining, you’re spoilt for choice. Opt for contemporary Indian in the golden-hued Ziya restaurant, or opt for Italian, Japanese or pan-Asian cuisine. If you’re simply after an expertly mixed cocktail or a fine single malt, then the Eau Bar is your port of call. It even features a 500 glass tube installation to ensure the perfect acoustics.

When you want to relax, take a dip in the refreshing waters of the outdoor pool or indulge in a spa treatment that blends ancient knowledge and modern science.

luxury tours in india

Since its opening in 1903, The Taj Mahal Palace has been one of Mumbai’s most iconic landmarks. An architectural gem, the hotel blends plenty of old-world charm with all the comforts of a modern luxury hotel.

Its location is hard to beat, perched on the water and overlooking the majestic Gateway of India monument, built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. The hotel’s 560 rooms are spread across the Palace and the Tower wing and come with spectacular views of the city, the Arabian Sea or the Gateway itself. Italian marble bathrooms add another element of luxury.

The hotel itself has plenty of character with vaulted ceilings, hand-woven silk carpets, crystal chandeliers and an impressive art collection. The dabbawalas in action

When it comes to lunch, popping out for a sandwich is just not how they do it in Mumbai. The dabbawalas are a 5,000 strong group who deliver 200,000 lunch boxes every day to offices around the city. Every morning the dabbawalas call on homes to pick up dabbas, or lunch boxes, filled with home cooked food prepared for office workers. All the boxes look identical but a very well organised and precise system ensures they all end up at the correct desk. You’ll visit Churchgate Station to see this amazing process in action.

Sunset and sunrise in Varanasi

An ancient settlement on the banks of the Ganges, Varanasi is India’s spiritual capital and important among numerous faiths. Varanasi’s 84 ghats – stone embankments that step down into the river- are its most significant landmarks. Most are crowded with pilgrims performing ritual ablutions in the waters while a few are used solely for cremation. Sublime and sometimes shocking to visitors, the whole experience is utterly unforgettable.

The rest of the city is home to some 23,000 temples, the sandstone Ramnagar Fort and numerous centres of education, philosophy, music and art. Small-scale industries and household production employ most of Varanasi’s residents and its winding alleyways are one of the best places to find fine silks, carpets and crafts.

Where to stay

Set among beautiful gardens, mango orchards and marigold and jasmine fields is Nadesar Palace, a 19th-century colonial palace and once a guest house for the officials of the East India Company. With just ten rooms, the hotel is grand yet intimate and is a real oasis of calm.

The hotel is dedicated to and named after the Goddess Nadesari, and there is a shrine to the deity in front of the building. Inside, the walls are adorned with works of art from the Maharaja’s personal collection while the rooms are filled with antique furniture and decorated in the same hues as the flowers that are offered to the holy Ganges.

A lap pool is set within perfectly manicured gardens and for those looking for ultimate relaxation, the spa offers a range of treatments inspired by India’s ancient healing techniques. Once you’ve built your energy reserves back up, take to the mini four-hole golf course.

One of the joys of travelling to India is sampling the food. The restaurant, which harks back to the bygone era of the Raj, serves traditional Indian cuisine alongside more international dishes. Private dining experiences are available to make your stay extra special, including a poolside Indian barbecue that is cooked in front of you while you enjoy the mesmerising music of sitar and tabla players.

Set on the banks of the holy River Ganges on one of Varanasi’s 87 ghats is Brijrama Palace, an opulent hotel that is perfect for those that want to be close to the heart and soul of this deeply spiritual city.

Built in the 18th century by the Royal House of Nagpur, the palace has been lovingly restored. Murals, hand-painted ceilings and beautiful carvings revealed during the restoration have brought it back to life, ensuring the building is in keeping with this most atmospheric of cities.

The hotel is approached by boat, immediately giving you the sense you are entering somewhere special. The central courtyard is filled with plants and sculptures and surrounded by a series of ornate pillars and arches cut from sandstone. Barnasi silk and gold leaf is used throughout the hotel and rooms are furnished with wooden four poster beds and beautiful Indian fabrics.

You’re ideally situated to explore the city, a stone’s throw from Dasashwamedh Ghat where the evening Ganga Aarti ceremony takes place. As people flock with their offerings, the river becomes a blanket of twinkling lights with oil lamps and flowers carried along the water.

The restaurant serves delicious vegetarian cuisine while tea, freshly ground coffee and traditional thandai can be enjoyed outdoors. In the evening there is live classical music in the lounge.

There are few places on earth quite like Varanasi, so make sure you set aside some time to head to the rooftop and soak up its incredible and unique atmosphere.

Two nights in the capital

With a population of over 18 million, Delhi is an international metropolis. Perhaps daunting at first sight, a little exploring soon reveals a rich, diverse and fascinating culture. Throughout most of its history, it has served as the capital of various kingdoms and empires, captured and rebuilt time and time again. Every dynasty left its mark and as you start to explore, you’ll discover reminders and relics from this colossal game of pass the parcel.

As well as centuries worth of history to explore, Delhi is also one of the best places in India to shop, try the many different styles of food and experience the buzz of a city where its millions of inhabitants are going about their daily business. And if weaving your way in and out of the rickshaws and cyclists ever starts to get too much, turn the corner and you’ll find a tranquil garden or a quiet enclave in which to stop, gather your thoughts and recharge.

With its clean lines, crisp decor and modern take on Moghul architecture, The Lodhi is a cool and contemporary hotel in the heart of New Delhi.

Despite being set within seven acres of grounds, the hotel has just 40 rooms giving it an intimate and exlusive feel. Rooms are elegantly styled in shades of dusky blue, grey and green and come with private balconies and plunge pools. Huge glass windows offer views out across Humayun’s Tomb and the Lodhi Gardens, from which the hotel takes its name.

Sophisticated design touches prevail thoughout, from the light installations and sculptures to the gallery space in the foyer showcasing the work of contemporary Indian artists. The hotel’s restaurant, On the Waterfront, has a real buzz about it, with the ground floor overlooking a reflection pool and a glass pavillion for private parties. The Elan focuses on India’s diverse culinary traditions, and here you can same local delicacies from the north to the south.

The library and cigar lounge are peaceful retreats in which to escape with a good book, while for those wanting to stretch their legs there is a 50m lap pool, three tennis courts, squash courts and a gym. Delhi Golf Club is also located opposite the hotel. After a day of sightseeing and exploring the city, relax in the tranquil spa which offers a range of traditional Indian treatments and therapies.

A driveway lined with tall palm trees leads to the grand white facade of The Imperial, one of Delhi’s most iconic hotels. Harking back to the days of the Raj, The Imperial is filled with old-world charm, its fascinating history a permanent presence.

The opulence of colonial India is felt from the moment you enter; the high ceilings, crystal chandeliers and artwork from the 18th and 19th centuries giving a sense of grandeur. Rooms are beautifully styled with antique furniture, marble floors covered in Indian rugs, and photographs of iconic Indian landmarks and events on the walls.

When the hotel opened its doors in the 30s, it became a meeting point for figures including Nehru, Ghandi, Jinnah and Lord Mountbatton who came to discuss the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan. Photographs of the various battalions during the British Raj adorn the walls and the 1911 Restaurant is a celebration of the year Delhi became the new capital of India.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating and drinking, with four restaurants offering south east Asian, gourmet Indian and European cuisine. There is also a pastry shop and a tea lounge with a glass domed ceiling and tinkling fountain and the hotel’s two bars are some of the city’s most popular.

An outdoor swimming pool is set within the verdant gardens of the hotel and there is a spa offering Ayurvedic therapies for when you want to simply drift away. Once you’ve recharged your batteries, head out and explore Delhi – you’re ideally located on Janpath, just moments from the renowned shopping district of Connaught Place and a short rickshaw ride from India Gate.

A tour of Old Delhi

The old city is a labyrinthine maze of lanes overhung by a tangled mass of electric wires. Within this chaos lies a semblance of order – each lane in this area is dedicated to a particular item, rather like a department store. There are lanes selling bangles, grocers, items used in weddings, silverware, clothes, spices and shoes. Sharing the same space are vendors with carts, street side dentists, natural healers and cobblers. Explore in cycle rickshaws and on foot, walking the alleys.

Explore New Delhi

New Delhi was built as the seat of the British Indian government in the early 20th century. The architect, Edwins Lutyens, invented his own order of classical architecture creating grand buildings, such as Rashtrapati Bhavan (formerly known as Viceroy’s House), as well as the Lutyens Bungalow Zone, a green area of residential buildings with the most expensive real estate in India. You’ll also see Humayun’s Tomb, built in 1570 as the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent.

A night spent in Agra

It has graced the pages of books for centuries but nothing quite prepares you for seeing the Taj Mahal for the very first time. The ultimate symbol of eternal love, this is one of India’s most memorable and emotive sights. The Taj Mahal sits on the banks of the holy Yamuna River within 42 acres of beautiful gardens. The domed mausoleum sits above the river bank, surrounded by minarets on all four sides. It is flanked by a mosque and a guest house, both made from red sandstone and mirror images of each other. Rise early, meet your guide and visit during cool, calm hours of sunrise when the monument is bathed in the ethereal glow of the morning light.

There is no denying that the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is one of the main reasons people visit Agra. However, it’s well worth lingering to explore the city’s magnificent fort that lies just to the west.

It took a workforce of more than 20,000 men 22 years to build, painstakingly making sure every slab of marble, precious stone and stroke of calligraphy was perfect.

Located well away from bustling Jaipur, The Oberoi Rajvilas is a sprawling fort-like retreat with some 32 acres of incredible gardens full of verdant trees, fragrant flowers and strutting peacocks.

Revived local techniques were used to recreate vernacular pink lime walls, grand Mughal arches, gold leaf frescoes, high domed ceilings and magnificent crystal chandeliers, giving the whole place an unmistakably palatial feel.

There are 71 rooms, luxury tents and private villas spread around the resort, many laid out in small clusters ideal for families or small groups wishing to stay near one another.

Built in 1729 as a private rural retreat for the Maharaja of Jaipur ’s wife, the RAAS Rajmahal Palace has remained an opulent oasis even as the city has grown around it.

Still owned by the royal family of Jaipur, in the halcyon days of the British Raj it embodied the glamour of ‘Jaipur Life’. As the preferred private residence of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, the dashing polo player, the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh, Jackie Kennedy and the Shah of Iran were entertained within its great walled gardens.

Today, it has been meticulously and daringly restored by designer Adil Ahmad, with grand chandeliered rooms embellished with intricate thematic wallpapers and luxurious fabrics.

The cost to ride on India's luxury trains may surprise you

Luxury trains in India date back to its colonial era, when opulent carriages transported dignitaries, officials and royalty.

More trains were built in the 19th century for the country's maharajas and other ruling elites and their families.

Following India's independence in 1947, privy purses — or governmental payments to these rulers — ended. Without the money to maintain them, India's luxury rail carriages were abandoned.

Indian Railways, which is part of India's national railway system, refurbished several trains over the years, with the first making its debut in the 1980s. The trains were introduced to promote tourism in India by providing travelers with a unique and opulent way to experience the country.

Blending historical elegance with modern comforts, these trains are a glimpse into India's regal past.

A note to travelers: Travel companies have websites that appear to be official sites for the trains in this article, sometimes selling trips at higher rates. Official sites for each train are embedded in the links.

1. Palace on Wheels

Route: an eight-day journey across northwest India, including the country's "Golden Triangle" of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra

Price: from $864 (based on twin sharing)

When it runs: September to April

Introduced in 1982, the Palace on Wheels is an icon in Indian luxury train travel. Chugging along the northern reaches of India through Rajasthan and Agra, this train immerses passengers in a royal bygone era with sundowners in the dunes, camel safaris and trips to Rajasthan's palaces and historic forts.

Its 14-coach train, each named after former princely states of Rajasthan, have 41 cabins, with panoramic windows, sumptuous carpets, frescoed ceilings, mahogany paneling and attached bathrooms. The two "super deluxe" cabins come with a noteworthy perk: a private car and guide for sightseeing.

The train's two dining cars serve Indian, continental and Italian cuisines, and there's a separate bar for cocktails and drinks. Active guests can get their exercise fix in the gym, while those who prefer to relax can book Ayurvedic treatments in the spa.

2. The Golden Chariot

Routes: three itineraries, ranging from three to five nights, across south India

Price: from $3,160 per person (based on twin sharing)

When it runs: October to March

Launched in 2008, the Golden Chariot runs across South India, past historic towns, sun-kissed beaches, jungle-covered hills, temples and safaris. It has 18 purple and gold carriages, each named after the dynasties of south India.

Italy's new 'Orient Express' isn't running yet — but rates are already soaring

Cabins come with ensuite bathrooms, smart TVs, Wi-Fi and an attendant. Local and international fare is served in two dining cars, and the train's lounge bar, Madira, features decor inspired by Mysore Palace .

There is also an exercise room and spa with traditional Indian and modern massage therapies.

All journeys start and end in Bengaluru.

3. Deccan Odyssey

Routes: Six week-long itineraries, departing from Mumbai and Delhi

Price: From $8,330 for single occupancy and $11,900 for double occupancy

When it runs: September to May

The Deccan Odyssey — running since 2004 — feels like a roving hotel.

Its 21 carriages house a high-tech conference space, spa, souvenir shop, gym and a bar serving fine wines and spirits, plus mocktails. Twelve cars are sleeper cabins, which come with personal butlers and plush carpeting, private bathrooms and mod cons such as internet and DVD players.

The train was refurbished during the Covid-19 pandemic, reopening in 2023 with gas stoves in lieu of gas-powered ones in the pantry car, with added suspension for a smoother journey, according to The Times of India.

The two onboard restaurants — Waavar and Utsav — are another highlight, serving specialties from the regions traversed by the train. Sumptuously draped curtains, crisp linens, engraved wood panelling and fine silver cutlery add to the royal aesthetic.

The journey also weaves in cultural experiences. One day, passengers might be admiring ancient Indian architecture, and on the next, wine-tasting or embarking on a game drive.

4. Maharajas' Express

Routes: four itineraries, ranging from three to six nights, departing from Delhi and Mumbai

Price: from $4,890 per person (based on twin sharing)

When it runs: October to April

Lavish interiors combined with the traditional royal hospitality of India have garnered the 23-carriage Maharajas' Express numerous awards since it launched in 2010.

Passengers can choose from four categories of room in 14 guest cabins — the largest being the Presidential Suite, which has two bedrooms, a living room and a bathroom with a bathtub.

A choice of two restaurants — the peacock-themed Mayur Mahal and Rang Mahal — are suitable for vegetarians and meat lovers alike.

Travelers can mingle over cocktails at the Safari Bar or opt for a more tranquil setting at the Rajah Lounge, where they can play games or read while taking in views of the passing landscapes.

Stops along the way highlight Indian culture and history, including holy baths in the sacred ghats, jungle safaris, palace and temple visits and shopping in bustling bazaars.
