While it’s not quite as complex as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe —one of our favorite Switch games on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite —Mario Kart Tour is fun and free-to-play.

How to download and play Mario Kart Tour

The latest Nintendo mobile game starts its engines

mario kart tour switch

Those of you looking for a quick fix of Nintendo magic have to look no further than Mario Kart Tour , which is now racing onto mobile.

Following the launches of Super Mario Run and Dr Mario - both simplified versions of the classic Nintendo franchises – Mario Kart Tour offers a way to race around classic Mario Kart tracks in those spare minutes on the bus, in the duller part of a meeting, or throughout all of your Tinder dates (we’ve seen you).

There have been countless Mario Kart titles across various Nintendo consoles, from the initial SNES title to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch . But for how to download and play Mario Kart Tour on iOS and Android, here’s everything you need to know.

  • How to download and play Super Mario Run

1. Check your phone (or tablet) can play it

mario kart tour switch

Mario Kart Tour will run on iOS and Android smartphones or tablets, so the game won’t be exclusive to certain product ranges – as we saw with the timed exclusivity of Fortnite mobile on Samsung Galaxy phones .

The Mario Kart Tour website does however recommend “a device with 1.5 GB of RAM or more.”

2. Download the app

mario kart tour switch

Pretty self-explanatory, but it will depend on your operating system and the device you’re playing on. For iPhones or iPads that run iOS, you’ll need to head to the App Store and search for the title. The full name is “Mario Kart Tour”, and it will be listed by “Nintendo Co., Ltd”, so make sure you don’t get caught out with any false apps or cackling malware . Android users will need to head to the Play Store instead – and all mobile users can pre-order / pre-register to get the game the moment it lands.

You’ll need some space on your phone for the actual app; Super Mario Run took up 205mb of data, so make sure you have enough to actually download the game in the first place.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Get the hottest deals available in your inbox plus news, reviews, opinion, analysis and more from the TechRadar team.

3. Link your Nintendo account, or create one

Once the app is downloaded, you’ll have to link up with your Nintendo account, which is something you’ll have if you’re already a Nintendo Switch owner, or had a Nintendo Wii or Wii U in your home. If this is your first foray into Nintendo – gasp – you’ll be taken through the steps, and will require a valid email address.

4. Beware of microtransactions

mario kart tour switch

Like Super Mario Run, Mario Kart Tour is a free-to-play game, meaning there will be optional microtransactions for cosmetic or gameplay items available (characters, kart parts, etc). If you’re setting up an account for your child , or just don’t trust your own self-control, you can check out the iOS controls or Android controls for this.

5. Get a good internet connection

Nintendo usually ensures its mobile games require an internet connection to play – for security reasons – meaning you won’t be able to crack out a blue shell in the dark depths of the subway. Wi-Fi in a home, office, cafe, or similar will be best, though a decent 4G connection (or 5G !) out and about should do you just fine as well.

Ratings and Reviews

Editors’ notes.

With exciting events, famous characters, and wild courses, Nintendo's legendary kart-racing series burns rubber on mobile.

Love this Game...However

It’s been a while since I enjoyed a game like this on my phone, even as an Apple Arcade subscriber... I went ahead and ponied up for the Gold Pass about 1 month after starting Mario Kart Tour, and I’ve found that the value for Gold (Almost) made sense, you get access to a couple high level players, karts etc, and the extra loot from every gift box, as well as access to the 200cc courses, but that’s where the advantage stops. If you ever want to ace these courses (5 Star) from this point forward, it’s not so much a matter of your “skill” in play, as much as it is for the advantage gained by high level players, karts and kites that you would only access from the Pipe. Which means you need Rubies and Rubies are expensive and hard to earn without those higher level players... also the frequency of high level “wins” for plays is ridiculous IMO, i have spent over 1000 rubies on the pipes so far and it just feels like you come up short. This is why I chose to Cancel my Gold Pass, reset my profile and delete/uninstall Mario Kart Tour. Although I enjoyed the brief attempt at multi-player, I think I’ll stick to playing MK on my switch for the competitive feel. Maybe I’ll circle back around, but for now, the juice is not worth the squeeze.

I’m only doing this since multiplayer is available now

The game is ok and it’s addictive because of nostalgia and the gambling of the pipe (which has problems in its own but that’s not what this review is about) I’m a little disappointed in the multiplayer at the moment. I was surprised that the mechanic of only 3 or so characters could get 3 items and have a frenzy was still a thing. I think a better option would to give everyone three items but make the chances of having a frenzy higher for the characters that go along with the map. Second I know it’s still glitchy because it’s still in testing but the ones I’ve seen are items disappearing, “teleporting”, and freezing. I know since it’s online that much can’t be done about the freezing; but when the round starts I don’t understand why there’s a chance of being at the starting line for up to a minute waiting for a countdown. Everyone is already in the lobby and has chosen their carts why can’t the race start Second part of my complaints Why the limitations on coins and xp? I understand that they don’t want people to be op but three hundred coin limit per day is a little stingy especially when the store changes everyday and even gliders cost up to 500 coins alone. Also 80% of the time the store is just filled with items you already have ,and so is the pipe ,I don’t think I should be able to spend rubies and get over 3 duplicates especially since they are so hard to get

Does Mario Kart Tour sync with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch?

Mario Kart Tour screenshot Yoshi Cup

Best answer: No. Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe don't sync. While they share characters, karts, and items, these are two games that don't have shared progression.Okey-dokey!: Mario Kart Tour for iOS (Free on the App Store)Mamma mia!: Mario Kart Tour for Android (Free on Goggle Play)That's-a Me!: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ($60 from Amazon)

A-wa-wa-wa-wa-wa!

If you want to sync up your Mario Kart Tour data with your Mario Kart 8 Deluxe progress, you're out of luck. Syncing between different devices would usually mean you can play a game on one device, save your progress, and then continue from that save on another device. This would mean all of the time spent playing in a game progresses you, no matter where you are playing.

In a game like Mario Kart, syncing data would mean having any unlocked items available to you no matter what device you are using. However, syncing data usually only works if you are playing the same game on a similar device. Even then, not all companies offer the function.

Because of the drastic changes made to the progression processes in Mario Kart Tour, there is no syncing between it and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Any unlocks you had in MK8 Deluxe won't transfer. That doesn't mean you can't have a fun time racing in either game or both!

How progression has changed

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch follows the same gameplay mechanics as the previous Mario Kart games. Progression is based on the player unlocking characters, karts, and new tracks by doing well during a set of races and getting podium placement at the end of a Cup. Receiving first place in a Cup unlocks a character. This goes for each engine class — 50cc, 100cc, etc. Success in one Cup will unlock the next.

Nintendo mixed things up a bit for their mobile app, Mario Kart Tour. This racing app has added Tours where each Tour travels through a real-world city, and new maps have been added inspired by these locations. Each Tour spends two weeks in a city before moving on to the next. It still uses the same progression system to unlock new Cups during a Tour, but at the end of the Tour, the Cup progression resets. So during a Tour, you might unlock eight out of the sixteen Cups available, but as you move to a new city, you will return to race one of the first Cup.

Don't worry; your unlocked characters, karts, and gliders don't reset between tours as the cups do. These items are yours throughout the game and are leveled up with use. These items will help increase your experience gain, which goes toward your new primary progression system, which is tracked by Player Level. This is also persistent through the changing of tours.

It's-a no, sadly so

In most games, where you would be playing a single game on two different devices, data syncing is a wonderful tool for game developers because it can give players a reason to buy a second copy of their game. This is especially true with syncing between a PC game and a mobile platform. You can play at home on one and the other you would take on the road (the Nintendo Switch).

While players might love the idea of having all their Mario Kart 8 Deluxe unlocks available to them on Mario Kart Tour, aside from the gameplay changes, syncing data would mean the mobile game would earn less money. People splurge to collect an item they really want in the Daily Selections shop or buy Rubies to take a chance on that special driver on the Tour. Game development is still a business, and if there was no way for Nintendo to earn money from micro-transactions, we wouldn't be able to play Mario Kart Tour for free.

In the end, while you may not be able to sync up data between the two, you can still enjoy both games.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - All DLC Tracks Released So Far

By James Carr on November 13, 2023 at 3:52PM PST

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has continued to be the best selling game on the Nintendo Switch, having sold nearly 44 million copies since the end of 2021 . While the Booster Pass was originally described as a collection of old tracks, Nintendo has brought out original tracks like Yoshi's Island. Nintendo has also started adding new racer, with Birdo the first to join and five more unannounced ones to be added later. It was originally released in May of 2014, meaning it's been over eight years since Nintendo last released a new Mario Kart game on console.

While the next mainline Mario Kart game isn't coming anytime soon, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is getting a ton of fresh content from now until the end of 2023. Nintendo announced that 48 new tracks will be added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , split into six waves of eight tracks. All six waves have been released, adding 48 tracks from other Mario Kart titles as DLC, in addition to a few new characters.

The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass gets you all six waves of tracks, whenever they are released. The Booster Pass can be purchased for $25 on the Nintendo eShop and is also included in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription, which runs $50 a year for a single subscription. While Nintendo doesn't announce which tracks will be included in each wave until right before the next wave is released, some data miners were able to determine possible future tracks based on some music in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Some of the tracks found were Maple Treeway (Wii), Sunset Wilds (GBA), and Amsterdam Drift (Tour). Here is every DLC track added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe so far.

Paris Promenade - Tour

Paris Promenade - Tour

First appearing in Mario Kart Tour, Paris Promenade is a course set in the heart of Paris, with the Eiffel Tower in the center of the course. The majority of the track is flat, running across brick roads. Paris Promenade has a special feature that many of the Tour courses have, where the path you drive through the track changes each lap.

Toad Circuit - 3DS

Toad Circuit - 3DS

Toad Circuit originally appeared in Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS. This shorter course is similar to some of the other character based circuits in Mario Kart, resembling something closer to a real-life race track than what you expect from Mario Kart. You can tell this one is Toad's track because of his giant balloon.

Choco Mountain - N64

Choco Mountain - N64

Choco Mountain first appeared on the Nintendo 64 and takes place within a, presumably, chocolate mountain. The course itself is designed to go up and through the mountain before heading back down to do another lap. It features falling rocks in one section and has the vibes of a mountain mine.

Coconut Mall - Wii

Coconut Mall - Wii

Coconut Mall is an iconic track from Mario Kart Wii. This track takes place inside a mall, featuring escalators that can either boost you up or slow you down depending on when you try to go up them. There are also some cars in the parking lot at the end of each lap that can take you out if you aren't careful.

Tokyo Blur - Tour

Tokyo Blur - Tour

Another Mario Kart Tour track, Tokyo Blur, takes place during the daytime in a section of Tokyo. This map features Japanese buildings and a brief stint on a Tokyo highway. Like many other Mario Kart Tour maps, this track has three different paths, so each lap isn't the same as the previous one.

Shroom Ridge - DS

Shroom Ridge - DS

Shroom Ridge made its debut on Nintendo DS. Similar to Toad's Turnpike, Shroom Ridge takes place entirely on a busy road, with NPC vehicles driving that can wreck anyone who touches them. Instead of taking place in a city environment, the course takes place on a grassy mountain ridge.

Sky Garden - GBA

Sky Garden - GBA

Sky Garden originated on the Game Boy Advance, taking place on a giant beanstalk in the sky. This course features bouncy mushroom platformers and a few flying sections. The track features stone roadways on floating clouds, weaving between massive beanstalks, with a few bouncy mushrooms along the way.

Ninja Hideaway - Tour

Ninja Hideaway - Tour

Ninja Hideaway is another Mario Kart Tour map and this one isn't based on a real world location. Instead, it takes place in a fictionalized ninja hideout that is far too big for the Mario characters. You race through the hideout and across massive rooftops, as Koopas and Shy Guys cheer from the sidelines.

New York Minute - Tour

New York Minute - Tour

Starting off the second wave of new tracks is New York Minute, another real-world map from Mario Kart Tour. This one takes place in the streets of the city, with a small detour with what seems like Central Park. Once again, this map has multiple different routes, changing from lap-to-lap.

Mario Circuit 3 - SNES

Mario Circuit 3 - SNES

An SNES classic, Mario Circuit 3 is one of, if not the, blandest Mario Kart tracks ever made. The map takes place in a dirt area with colored blocks surrounding the track and an outside green pasture with original Super Mario blocks and green pipes decorating it.

Kalimari Desert - N64

Kalimari Desert - N64

Kalimari Desert originated on the Nintendo 64. This desert map has a western vibe to it, as players race around a mountain. The main attraction of this map is a train that constantly circles the track on a set of tracks, occasionally crossing over the actual track.

Waluigi Pinball - DS

Waluigi Pinball - DS

Waluigi Pinball originated in Mario Kart DS. This map is designed after the lanky mischief maker and takes place on an oversized pinball machine. The majority of the course is the loading track, where the pinball travels through on its way to the main table. On the main table there are tons of massive pinballs flying around that will wreck anyone in their path.

Sydney Sprint - Tour

Sydney Sprint - Tour

Sydney Sprint originated in Mario Kart Tour, taking place in the performing arts area, near the Sydney Opera House. The map sends players through parks and buildings, surrounded by the waterfront and a ferris wheel. Like other real-world inspired Mario Kart Tour maps, this course features multiple paths, changing each lap.

Snow Land - GBA

Snow Land - GBA

Originally from the Game Boy Advance, Snow Land takes place in an icy winter wonderland, with penguins sliding around the track. Like some other tracks with ice on them, karts have slightly less traction when on ice. The track has a relatively simple layout, coming from the GBA.

Mushroom Gorge - Wii

Mushroom Gorge - Wii

Mushroom Gorge first appeared in Mario Kart Wii. This track takes place in a grassy mountain area, with multiple gorges filled with giant mushrooms. These mushrooms are bouncy, and you need to race across multiple mushroom tops in multiple areas.

Sky-High Sundae - New/Tour

Sky-High Sundae - New/Tour

Sky-High Sundae is technically an original map for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The map will be appearing in Mario Kart Tour at a later date, so it's technically a Mario Kart Tour track but also this is its first appearance. The course takes place on a massive ice cream paradise, floating in the air. The map features tons of jumps and anti-gravity areas.

London Loop - Tour

London Loop - Tour

Originally released for Mario Kart Tour, London Loop features a race around the heart of London with familiar landmarks like the Big Ben. Similar to other Tour maps, London Loop features an interwoven track that changes its path each lap. There are also a bunch of Chain Chomps in London Loop that get let loose on the final lap of the map.

Boo Lake - GBA

Boo Lake - GBA

From Mario Kart Circuit, Boo Lake features a night time course centered around a spooky lake. This track takes place exclusively on a wooden pier in the center of the lake, but half of the track is underwater. While the atmosphere is fairly spooky, Boo Lake doesn't have as many Boos as you might expect.

Rock Rock Mountain - 3DS

Rock Rock Mountain - 3DS

Rock Rock Mountain from Mario Kart 7 takes place on the side of some steep cliffs, high above the clouds. The inside part of the track has you head down the mountain, navigating massive trees, a few of which have fallen. Lastly, you must head back up the mountain, driving head on against falling boulders.

Maple Treeway - Wii

Maple Treeway - Wii

Perhaps one of the more iconic tracks from Mario Kart Wii, Maple Treeway features an autumn forest, where you must race across the treetops. The map opens with a launcher that sends you to the top of Maple Treeway, where you must make your way down, avoiding Wigglers.

Berlin Byways - Tour

Berlin Byways - Tour

Like many of the original tracks for Mario Kart Tour, Berlin Byways is inspired by the real-life city it's named after. Despite the real-world city, this track is covered in classic Mario obstacles, like a myriad of Thwomps and Whomps. This track weaves through parks, subways, and waterfront bridges, changing the path of the race each lap.

Peach Gardens - DS

Peach Gardens - DS

Another classic track, Peach Gardens from the Nintendo DS features a track with wide-open sections that runs through the garden at Peach's Castle. You will need to avoid a variety of differently shaped bushes and the Chain Chomps guarding them. The final lap of Peach Gardens in this version reverses the direction of the race, having players do it in the opposite direction.

Merry Mountain - Tour

Merry Mountain - Tour

Merry Mountain originates from Mario Kart Tour, but isn't based on a real-world city. Instead Merry Mountain features a festive track, decked out in holiday decorations like massive candy canes, Christmas trees, and more. This winter wonderland takes racers up a snowy mountain before descending back down.

Rainbow Road - 3DS

Rainbow Road - 3DS

While there is no shortage of Rainbow Road courses throughout the Mario Kart franchise to choose from, the Mario Kart 7 version of the iconic map features a number of asteroids and planets intertwined with the track. This version of Rainbow Road is a point-to-point race, with a few detours off the rainbow track onto some asteroids and planet rings.

Amsterdam Drift - Tour

Amsterdam Drift - Tour

Amsterdam Drift, which originally appeared in Mario Kart Tour, takes you through the main section of the city, while also showing off some iconic parts of the Netherlands. The main scratch of track, which keeps the Tour tradition of changing each lap, takes you through the heart of the city, while occasionally breaking out into the more lush windmill- and tulip-adorned countryside. The track also takes you into the Amsterdam canal, featuring a large underwater section.

Riverside Park - GBA

Riverside Park - GBA

Riverside Park, which first appeared on the GBA, is heavily inspired by Donkey Kong Country. This track takes place in a dark forest next to a river, with vine covered trees in the surrounding area. The final section of the track takes you inside a mountain, which you exit by jumping through a waterfall. It also features walking Piranha Plants, carrying items with them that they drop when hit by an item or racer.

DK Summit - Wii

DK Summit - Wii

DK Summit from Mario Kart Wii transforms a Black Diamond ski trail into a race track. Presumably owned by Donkey Kong, the race starts with you ascending the mountain via a barrel cannon--because a ski lift would be boring--before making your way back down the track. There are plenty of obstacles, jumps, and snowboarders along the way, making for one of the more difficult Mario Kart tracks.

Yoshi's Island

Yoshi's Island

Yoshi's Island is a brand-new track, inspired by the game of the same name. This track starts in the autumn-colored hills, before traveling into an underground cavern. From there you ascend into the clouds, before flying back down to start the next lap. This track is filled with characters and enemies from Yoshi's Island and uses music from the game, making for an excellent experience.

Bangkok Rush - Tour

Bangkok Rush - Tour

Bangkok Rush, another Mario Kart Tour track, features the capital city of Thailand. This track features multiple stretches of street vendors, along with more industrialized shopping zones and magnificent looking capitol buildings. There is also an overhead train running through sections of the map, as well as a parking garage you jump off of on the final lap.

Mario Circuit - DS

Mario Circuit - DS

The Nintendo DS version of Mario Circuit feels more like a race track inspired by Mario games then a racetrack with Mario's name on, like some of the more modern versions. This track features Peach's Castle overlooking it, with grassy hills and a gloomy forest to drive through. There are also Piranha Plants that shoot fireballs at racers and a Wiggler that roams the forest section.

Waluigi Stadium - Gamecube

Waluigi Stadium - Gamecube

Waluigi Stadium from Mario Kart: Double Dash feels ripped straight out of the X Games. This muddy track takes place within some type of sports stadium, feeling far more constructed than other tracks. There are tire stacks and construction vehicles lining the sides of the track. There are also fake Piranha Plants coming out of fake pipes.

Singapore Speedway - Tour

Singapore Speedway - Tour

Singapore Speedway, coming from Mario Kart Tour like all other real world location-based tracks, provides a journey through the massive city. There are plenty of skyscrapers surrounding the track, but there are more focused areas too, like a lantern filled cultural district. The track also includes sections featuring the more architecturally impressive parts of Singapore as well.

Athens Dash - Mario Kart Tour

Athens Dash - Mario Kart Tour

Originally released for Mario Kart Tour, Athens Dash takes place in Greece. Despite being set in the modern version of Athens, the majority of this track takes place in ancient ruins, with massive golden statues and an amphitheater as major highlights. A brief detour on the third lap takes racers across modern rooftops.

Daisy Cruiser - Mario Kart Double Dash

Daisy Cruiser - Mario Kart Double Dash

Originally released in Mario Kart Double Dash for the GameCube, Daisy Cruiser takes place entirely on a Daisy-themed cruise liner. The race takes place both on the top deck of the ship, as well as inside of it, including a dining hall where tables full of Mario characters slide back and forth across the room.

Moonview Highway - Mario Kart Wii

Moonview Highway - Mario Kart Wii

First appearing in Mario Kart Wii, Moonview Highway is a nighttime race that takes place on a traffic-filled highway. The first part of the race is on a curvy mountain top, with a steep cliffside. After swerving around that section, the rest of the map takes place in a neon-lit city. This race features bomb cars everywhere, which explode upon impact with a racer or item.

Squeaky Clean Sprint

Squeaky Clean Sprint

A brand-new track made for Mario Kart 8, Squeaky Clean Sprint sees miniature versions of the racers drift around a massive bathroom. This track takes you across a messy countertop, into a massive bathtub's drain, and across a soap-covered floor.

Los Angeles Laps - Mario Kart Tour

Los Angeles Laps - Mario Kart Tour

Pulled from Mario Kart Tour, Los Angeles Laps squeezes as many familiar Los Angeles sites into a single track as it can. The race starts on a boardwalk and quickly transitions over to the beach, which has a small skate park in it. The track also features a legally distinct Dodgers Stadium to jump over, a few city streets, and an industrial park.

Sunset Wilds - Game Boy Advance

Sunset Wilds - Game Boy Advance

From Mario Kart Super Circuit, Sunset Wilds is one of the more simply designed courses, but its aesthetic makes it memorable. Sunset Wilds takes place in a red desert, with cacti lining the sides of the track and Shy Guys strapped with mining gear found in one spot. A very old-west inspired soundtrack adds to the classic western feeling.

Koopa Cape - Mario Kart Wii

Koopa Cape - Mario Kart Wii

Originally from Mario Kart Wii, Koopa Cape is a mix between an oceanside river ride and a full-blown water park. The first section features a rapid river, which increases your speed if you can stay on it. The second section features an underwater tube, which in the Wii version of the track was completely enclosed, but is now open and a full-on underwater section.

Vancouver Velocity - Mario Kart Tour

Vancouver Velocity - Mario Kart Tour

Another Mario Kart Tour track, Vancouver Velocity features one of Canada's major cities. This track packs a ton of landmarks into a single track, with oceanside views and snowy mountains in the distance. The track itself goes through parks, downtown areas, and even into a filled hockey stadium, with Shy Guys skating around.

Rome Avanti - Tour

Rome Avanti - Tour

From Mario Kart Tour, Rome Avanti takes place at dusk, showing off some of the iconic spots of the city. It features the brick-paved streets, elaborate fountains, and classic architecture you would expect from Rome. It also includes a Chain Chomp-filled Colosseum along with the changing paths each lap that Tour is known for.

DK Mountain - Gamecube

DK Mountain - Gamecube

One of the most iconic Mario Kart: Double Dash tracks, DK Mountain features a downhill sprint, starting from the top of a massive volcano. It starts with a barrel cannon that sends you to the top, before flying down the mountain side and through the jungle.

Daisy Circuit - Wii

Daisy Circuit - Wii

From the Nintendo Wii, Daisy Circuit is a simple track that takes place in a waterfront plaza. It features giant statues of Daisy and Luigi, along with their baby versions. It also has a pier, with a lighthouse on it and you can see the Daisy Cruiser off in the distance.

Piranha Plant Cove

Piranha Plant Cove

Piranha Plant Cove makes its debut in Mario Kart 8, featuring a mostly underwater map. It takes place in the ruins of an ancient Piranha Plant civilization, including sunken pyramids. There are plenty of underwater creatures, including massive eels.

Madrid Drive - Tour

Madrid Drive - Tour

Madrid Drive from Mario Kart Tour takes place in the heart of Madrid, featuring plazas, markets, and lush parks. There are plenty of iconic statues and fountains throughout the map, along with some distinct architecture. There is also a massive stadium to drive through, featuring giant soccer ball obstacles.

Rosalina's Ice World - 3DS

Rosalina's Ice World - 3DS

Rosalina's Ice World from the Nintendo 3DS shares many features with the other snow levels, but has a dash of Mario Galaxy mixed in. It features plenty of Luma inspired lights and giant stars, along with a Mario Galaxy planet spinning above you. The track itself is fairly simple, consisting of mostly one big straight section, but it has personality.

Bowser's Castle 3 - SNES

Bowser's Castle 3 - SNES

Bowser's Castle 3 from the SNES is a fairly simple track, featuring a stone castle. The track has a few improvements, like some upward ramps not originally presented and the surrounding lava and lava waterfalls gives this map an oppressing feeling.

Rainbow Road - Wii

Rainbow Road - Wii

Every Mario Kart features a Rainbow Road, but the Wii version has a special place in the series. This course features plenty of curves and chaotic jumps, but the design of the track itself is beautiful and the Mario Galaxy star bits floating around really make this one stand out.

First Human Patient to Receive a Neuralink Brain Implant Used it to Stay Up All Night Playing Civilization 6

“it was worth it, i think is the best way to put it, it was awesome.”.

Anthony Wood

The first human recipient of a Neuralink brain implant has shared new details on his recovery and experience of living with the experimental assistive tech, which has allowed him a greater level of freedom and autonomy, including the ability to pull an all-nighter playing Sid Meier's Civilization 6 .

Neuralink co-founder Elon Musk took to X/Twitter in January to reveal that the company had implanted its first brain-computer interface in the head of a human patient , who was “recovering well” following the surgery. The billionaire also hinted at the time that the implant was functioning well and had detected a “promising neuron spike”. In a subsequent February update, Musk commented that the unnamed patient had seemingly made a full recovery, and was even able to use the implant to manipulate a computer cursor with thought alone.

Finally, on March 20, Neuralink posted its own update to X in the form of a nine-minute livestream in which 29-year-old implant recipient Noland Arbaugh used the technology to play a digital version of chess, while discussing how living with the experimental aide had changed his life.

https://t.co/OMIeGGjYtG — Neuralink (@neuralink) March 20, 2024

“It was like using the force on the curser, and I could get it to move wherever I wanted, just stare somewhere at the screen, and it would move where I wanted it to, which was such a wild experience,” explained Arbaugh. The 29-year-old complete quadriplegic shared that he had lost sensation and suffered paralysis from below the shoulders after sustaining a spinal injury during a diving accident eight years ago, and had felt compelled to volunteer for the trial out of an urge to be a part of something that he felt “could change the world”.

Throughout the livestream, Arbaugh could be seen using the Neuralink brain-computer interface (BCI) to control an on-screen cursor to play a game of digital chess, and pause music that had been playing in the background. Arbaugh also revealed that the implant had given him the freedom to pull an all-nighter playing the strategy game Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 - something that he could not have done on his own before the surgery.

“One of the first times you all gave me complete control over this [Neuralink tech], I actually stayed up until […] like 6am playing Civilization 6,” said Arbaugh to Neuralink scientist Bliss Chapman. “It was worth it, I think is the best way to put it, it was awesome.”

Neuralink was kind enough to open their doors for me to tour their headquarters a few weeks back. It was an amazing experience and a day I'll never forget. This was at a company wide meeting at the end of the day. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Hope y'all enjoy!… pic.twitter.com/YNa2Jtjhnk — Noland Arbaugh (@ModdedQuad) March 22, 2024

Arbaugh explained that he had largely given up on playing Civilization 6 prior to having the surgery, as he needed ”complete help” from a friend in order to play, and the time intensive nature of the game had made prolonged play sessions untenable.

“So it wasn’t feasible for me to play a full game or anything,” explained Arbaugh. “Now I can literally just lie in bed and play to my heart’s content. Honestly the biggest restriction at this point was having to wait for the implant to charge once I had used all of it.”

The 29-year-old also revealed in a subsequent Neuralink presentation posted to X that the implant had allowed him to play Mario Kart 8: Deluxe using the neural signals decoded by the BCI tech. “Playing Mario Kart and coming in second repeatedly blew my mind, I didn’t think that would be possible like [...] a week in to using it, that was freaking wild. Even though my dad and my buddy wouldn’t let me win,” said Arbaugh.

The implant has also helped Noland to begin learning French and Japanese, and has generally removed barriers when it comes to reading. He has also emphasised that he had suffered no “cognitive impairments” as a result of the procedure, and that he was able to leave the hospital a day after undergoing the two-hour surgical procedure.

Long-term, it is possible to shunt the signals from the brain motor cortex past the damaged part of the spine to enable people to walk again and use their arms normally— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 21, 2024

“It’s not perfect, I would say that we have run in to some issues,” commented the 29-year-old. “I don’t want people to think this is the end of the journey, there is still a lot of work to be done, but it has already changed my life...”

Soon after Neuralink posted the video, Musk took to X to re-emphasise his ambitious long-term plan for the technology. The billionaire hopes to eventually use the implants to ‘shunt’ signals directly from a patient’s motor cortex to the relevant part of the body in order to bypass sections of damaged spine, and restore mobility lost to paralysis. Neuralink has also discussed the possibility of using implants to stimulate regions of the brain in order to help blind patients to see with the aid of cameras .

Neuralink was founded by Elon Musk and a handful of scientists and engineers in 2016 with a goal to create a brain-computer interface (BCI), that could one day be used to “ restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs ”.

In order to use the interface, a patient would have to undergo an invasive procedure performed by a surgical robot, in which a circular section of the skull is cut away to make room for an implant. During the operation, a collection of ultra-thin electrode-carrying threads are inserted into key areas of the brain, where they record neural activity then transmitted via the implant to a Neuralink Application, which decodes the data into executable actions such as an order to move a computer cursor to a designated point.

The company has attracted significant controversy in recent years owing to concerns surrounding the treatment of animals used in its pre-human trials. A December 2022 Reuters report citing official documents and interviews with over 20 past and present Neuralink employees, stated that the company’s experiments had led to the deaths of over 1,500 animals - including monkeys, pigs, and sheep - since 2018.

It is not uncommon for animals used in healthcare trials to be euthanized at the end of a study. However, according to Reuters’ sources, pressure from Musk, who was allegedly frustrated by the company’s apparent lack of progress, had reportedly caused Neuralink scientists to adopt a rushed approach to some surgeries, which in turn allegedly led to avoidable mistakes being made that caused needless death and suffering for the animals involved.

According to the Reuters article, Neuralink was under federal investigation at the time by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) Inspector General for potential animal welfare violations. Later in 2023, Neuralink came under fire once again, this time for allegedly transporting contaminated implants used in animal experiments in an unsafe manner that could constitute a hazard to humans.

Neuralink has responded to criticisms by repeatedly stressing its commitment to ethical and humane animal trials , and has posted a slew of blogs highlighting positive aspects of its animal care program. In a January 2023 letter to lawmakers viewed by Reuters , the head of the USDA stated that a seperate "focused" inspection had found no compliance breaches of U.S. law when it came to Neuralink's animal trials.

Those findings were later criticised by the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine , which accused the USDA of giving Neuralink a “free pass” for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, particularly in regard to two incidents in which scientists used an adhesive called BioGlue to seal holes drilled in the heads of rhesus macaques, with fatal consequences.

Neuralink subsequently announced in September 2023 that it had opened up for its first human clinical trial, known as the Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface (PRIME) study . Noland Arbaugh, who was known as P1 prior to having his identity revealed earlier this month, was selected as the first participant.
