* FESTIVAL APPEARANCE

The sixth solo LP from Mike Gordon, Flying Games is an album of constant and wildly hypnotic movement, each moment animated by unexpected sounds that morph and expand and spin off into their own strange orbits. In keeping with the eclectic sensibilities that informed past work like 2017’s pop-fueled OGOGO and 2020’s Noon (a collaborative album made with acoustic guitar luminary Leo Kottke), the new LP imbues elements of everything from disco and dancehall to psych-folk and funk into Gordon’s unfettered and expansive breed of rock music. To create such a mesmerizing body of work, the Vermont-based musician spent long months – including much of 2020’s lockdown – writing and recording in his makeshift Megaplum home studio, immersing himself in sonic experiments ranging from the playfully spontaneous (constructing beats by banging wrenches against various pieces of farming equipment) to the hyper-specific and technical (programming a keyboard with chords sampled from’50s-era Hawaiian guitar records). As the songs became more fully formed, Gordon brought in contributions from his bandmates, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter, percussionist Craig Myers, and guitarist/pedal-steel player Scott Murawski, all of whom submitted parts from afar which were then woven by Gordon and Slomoff into the initial tracks. Revealing entirely new dimensions of the kaleidoscopic musicianship Gordon has displayed as Phish’s bassist for the last four decades, the result is a work of both extraordinary vision and daring execution.

“As someone who comes from a world of telepathic improvisation, the idea of one person layering sounds alone in a room might seem a bit against the mythos,” says Gordon. “But with this record I didn’t want to work in that traditional way of going into a studio with a band and recording for two weeks; I wanted to take my time and explore, and really go deep into the fabric of the music to see what we could find.”

Mike Gordon Announces New Solo Album, “Flying Games”

Kevin Johnson

Phish bassist and co-founder Mike Gordon has revealed his sixth solo album, Flying Games , will be released on May 12th. The release will be his first solo studio record since 2017’s OGOGO .

A press release for the album calls it “constant and wildly hypnotic” and a continuation of Gordon’s explorations into merging sonic states from disco and dancehall to psych-folk and funk.” Gordon will be joined by drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter, percussionist Craig Myers, and guitarist/pedal-steel player Scott Murawski, although he did all of the writing on his own this time around.

Fans can get a preview of what’s to come with the first single, “Tilting,” which comes with a trippy animated video.

“For me ‘Tilting’ is about being in a situation or a relationship where you don’t know if your footing is solid,” the bassist says, “but then accepting that and realizing you enjoy the feeling of disorientation. Whether it’s playing music or driving or experiencing something new, I’ve always felt more present when I don’t know where I’m going next.”

In addition to Flying Games , Gordon has announced a solo band tour for June and July.

Mike Gordon Rolls Out Debuts in Maine

Mike Gordon Rolls Out Debuts in Maine

Last night, fans gathered at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine, as Mike Gordon took the stage with his band for his first solo tour since 2020. The show was filled with excitement as Gordon treated the audience to an unforgettable night of music including debuts in both sets and other surprises.

Gordon kicked things off with the energetic “Say Something,” instantly captivating the crowd and continued to elevate the experience as it flowed into the debut of “Pure Energy” – both electrified the atmosphere and showcased Gordon’s signature bass prowess. The surprises continued with Gordon’s debuts as he stringed together “Before You Gotta Go,” “Mull,” and “Ooh I Like Your Loving,” each adding a fresh dimension to the performance. The set reached a crescendo with the crowd-pleasing favorites “Crazy Sometimes,” “Jones,” and “Sughn Never Sets.”

After a brief intermission, Gordon and his band returned for an exhilarating second set that raised the energy levels to new heights. The set kicked off with the powerful “Victim,” and Gordon didn’t wait long to get back to sharing new material as he shared the highly anticipated debut of “Connected.” The band continued to impress with the debut of “Circling,” Gordon then surprised fans with his rendition of Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing,” a delightful interpretation that left the crowd grooving. The set continued to enthrall with “Haywire” and the debut of “Revolution of the Mind.” The set reached its climax with “Back in the Bubble,” leaving the crowd in awe of Gordon’s musical prowess.

As the crowd erupted with applause and cheers, Gordon returned to the stage for an encore that would be etched in the memories of those in attendance. The band delivered a captivating performance of Phish’s beloved “Carini,” delighting fans and concluding the night on a high note.

Phish bassist Mike Gordon lights up new-look Bell’s venue

KALAMAZOO, MI — A longtime Bell’s concertgoer stood on the raised patio at back of the new-look Bell’s Beer Garden concert venue Wednesday night, impressed with the changes.

“Does this not just open up the room or what?” Karl Rademacher said.

Previously, anyone on that patio would not have had a view of the stage. New renovations now allow for a clear view. And not just from there, but from any place in the venue.

Concertgoers can also visit a new bar on the patio that serves beer and food. The new bar gives the garden three outdoor bars in total, one more than before.

The renovations have also allowed Bell’s Beer Garden to expand its capacity from 1,000 to 1,200.

The changes were on full display for the first time on Wednesday, June 21 as Phish bassist Mike Gordon and his five-piece band took the stage.

The band, on tour promoting Gordon’s sixth solo LP, “Flying Games,” stopped by Kalamazoo on week two of its tour.

Fittingly on the summer solstice, the venue debuted its new higher-arching stage top, complete with a backdrop of an Oberon-esque setting sun, bringing a new feel to the beer garden.

Many of the 800-plus attendees raved about the views from the patio, the roomier garden and the bigger feel to the venue. Although the new stage setup drew some mixed reviews.

Related: Venue renovations set stage for 2023 summer season in Bell’s Beer Garden

Most were appreciative of how the structure provided more space for the band, more lights and a state-of-the-art PA. Yet, more than a few people expressed disappointment that the iconic sun crafted by local artist James Ardis — and the old wooden stage arch it hung above — were gone.

For those that miss it, the sun now hangs inside the Eccentric Café. The wood from the stage will be re-purposed and placed throughout the garden in the coming months and years, said Val Walters, concert and events manager at Bell’s.

“From a nostalgic perspective, it was little shocking to not see the sun and the wooden stage,” said Sarah Barany-Davis, who has been attending shows in the garden since the late 1990s. “But as a music lover and a person that understands what bands need, the previous stage was too small. This is bigger. It’s a new era and I welcome it.”

Barany-Davis also commented on the improved sound in the garden.

“We should have had a sound system like this many years ago,” she said. “The sound is amazing.”

That sound had fans of Gordon dancing in the garden throughout the night, as he played two sets of original music, including multiple songs off his latest release, “Flying Games,” such as “Marissa” and “Tilting.” He also played older cuts such as “Victim” and “Crazy Sometimes,” the latter of which occasionally appears on Phish setlists.

Speaking of Phish, Gordon and his bandmates also performed “Wave of Hope,” a song written by Phish front man Trey Anastasio. Anastasio penned the song, now a regular at Phish shows, during the pandemic.

Gordon and his band then capped the evening with an encore cover of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion,” before treating fans to an impromptu meet-and-greet after the show.

The remainder of the Bell’s 2023 summer concert series schedule:

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
