Best hotel near Mumbai Airport?

I stayed at The Grand Hotel at Ballard Estate, located in the Fort Area. It is one of the prime localities in Mumbai due to its proximity to several attractions. I will be posting a detailed review of the hotel soon.

How to reach Mumbai?

Mumbai is cosmopolitan and well-connected with almost every city in India. Moreover, its railway and air network is one of the busiest in India. I took an early morning flight from Delhi and reached Mumbai at 10 am. Taking an early flight allowed me to explore places near the airport.

Airport:  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

Railway Station:  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

5 Things to do near Mumbai airport

Basilica of our lady of the mount, bandra.

Basilica-of-Our-Lady-of-the-Mount-Bandra-mumbai

The Mount Mary Church, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, is a beautiful and historic place of worship in Bandra, Mumbai. Its Neo-gothic architectural style makes for a picturesque facade, making this a popular destination for celebrities and tourists. The best time to visit this church is during the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is followed by a week-long festival known as the  Bandra Fair . I was totally mesmerized by the architecture and the location. It is truly a stunning piece of history and a must-visit in Mumbai.

Note : Photography is not allowed within the premises, including phone photography.

Bandra Fort

bandra-fort-mumbai

Bandra Fort is an ancient fortress overlooking the Arabian sea, built by the Portuguese to serve as a watchtower. The fort provided potable water to the passing ships, hence was called  Castella de Aguada . What you see now are the ruins. However, the city skyline looks marvelous from this place.

Versova beach

juhu-beach-mumbai

Mumbai airport is very close to the coastline. In fact, the view right before landing is just breathtaking. I never miss a chance to make a video. Therefore, a visit to one of the closest beaches is a must. I recommend visiting Versova Beach. It is a 20-minutes drive from the airport and is a beautiful place to sit and relax. I would also recommend avoiding Juhu Beach. It is crowded and smells of dead fish. There is nothing special about Juhu beach, neither the view nor the vibe. So, I recommend you skip this and head to Versova beach instead.

powai-lake-mumbai

If you have a layover in Mumbai, you should definitely check out Powai. It is just 5.6 km from the airport and is one of the best suburban districts in Mumbai, full of stunning architecture and a beautiful lake to explore. Grab a bite at a cafe in the Galleria market, and take a leisurely stroll to admire the architecture and the lake. While you are at the lake, keep an eye on the wildlife, from birds to crocodiles. I had the chance to visit Powai on my way back to the airport and was blown away by its beauty. Keep an eye out for more details in my future articles!

Explore The Celebrity Houses

amitabh-bachchans-house-jalsa-bandra-mumbai

If you are a Bollywood buff, this is one of the most fun things to do in Mumbai. Several Bollywood celebrities reside in Bandra and Juhu, making it the best place to spot your favorite celeb. However, remember to respect their boundaries and be courteous. You can simply walk or drive around to spot the houses. Mannat (SRK’s house) is near the Mount Mary Church, while Jalsa (Amitabh Bachchan) can be seen on the way to Prithvi Cafe in Juhu from Bandra.

I hope you enjoyed reading this article, check out more things to do in Mumbai on the blog. If you have any suggestions I should cover in the future, let me know in the comments. I am always looking for new and exciting destinations to explore, and I would love to hear your recommendations.

Everything You Need to Know About Mumbai Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

Mumbai airport is one of the main entry points into India. It's the second busiest airport in the country (after Delhi ) and handles more than 50 million passengers a year. It's also the world's busiest airport with only one operational runway.

If you haven't been to the airport in a long while, know that it was leased to a private operator in 2006 and has since undergone major expansion and upgrade. This includes the construction of new domestic terminals and a new integrated international terminal, Terminal 2, which opened in February 2014.

Airport Code, Location, and Contact Information

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai (BOM). It's named after a revered Maharashtrian warrior king.
  • Airport helpline: +91 022 66851010
  • Website: https://www.csmia.aero/
  • The international and domestic terminals share a runway but are located in different suburbs of the city. The international terminal is at Sahar in Andheri East while the domestic terminal is in Santa Cruz, 30 kilometers (19 miles) and 24 kilometers (15 miles) north of the city center respectively.

Know Before You Go

It takes one and a half to two hours to travel between Mumbai airport and Colaba , the main tourist district in South Mumbai. However, travel time is much less early in the morning or late at night when traffic is lighter.

Budget airlines GoAir and IndiGo operate their domestic flights from Mumbai airport's domestic Terminal 1. Check-in is at Departures Gate 1 (Indigo) and Departures Gate 2 (GoAir) on the ground level. The arrivals area, including baggage claim and transport, is located in a separate concourse on the ground level. SpiceJet relocated its entire domestic operations to Terminal 2 from October 2019.

Terminal 2 services all international departures and arrivals. In addition, full-service domestic airlines (Vistara and Air India) and SpiceJet use the terminal for their domestic flights. Terminal 2 has four levels as follows:

  • Level 1 - Transport (prepaid taxis, car rentals, and hotel reservations).
  • Level 2 - Arrivals
  • Level 3 - Domestic Departures (Gates F and B)
  • Level 4 - International Departures plus check-in for all flights (including domestic).

Security checks take place before immigration at Terminal 2 to enable passengers to place items that fail the security check into their check-in baggage.

  • Upon arrival at Terminal 2, after you've cleared immigration and collected your luggage, you'll have to get your hand and carry-on bags scanned while passing through customs. Your check-in bags will also be scanned if they've been marked with a chalk cross. The scanning is to detect smuggled goods or undeclared items on which customs duty may be payable.
  • If you're transferring between domestic Terminal 1 and international Terminal 2, the only option is to take a taxi. Unfortunately, there's no longer a free inter-terminal shuttle bus. Allow 30 minutes to complete the trip as you'll need to take the outside road and there may be traffic congestion.
  • Free WiFi is available in both the domestic and international terminals. However, an Indian cell phone number is needed to register to use it.
  • Passengers with special needs are catered for by reserved parking slots, ramps, lifts, and bathrooms. Wheelchairs and attendants are available inside the terminals.
  • Money exchange counters and ATMs inside the terminals.
  • Luggage storage facilities are provided at the domestic and international terminals. The counters are located at the arrival hall exit ramp of domestic Terminal 1 and the ground transportation lobby of international Terminal 2. You can store your luggage starting from 180 rupees for six hours. Bags can also be transferred from storage at Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 for a fee.

Airport Parking

Parking at Mumbai airport is divided into general and premium categories. Terminal 1 has designated parking for 750 cars, while there's space for 1,500 cars at Terminal 2. Rates start from 140 rupees for up to 30 minutes and increase to 360 rupees for four hours, before increasing by 130 rupees per 60 minutes up to eight hours. The rate for eight to 24 hours is 1,000 rupees. Motorbikes pay less. Frequent travelers have the option of buying a monthly parking pass.

Driving Directions

Cars and taxis can directly access the airport from Sahar Elevated Road, which provides seamless connectivity from the Western Express Highway. Motorbikes and auto-rickshaws need to take a dedicated lane through the existing Sahar Road. In addition, those vehicles aren't permitted to enter the departures or arrivals areas of Terminal 2.

Public Transportation

Unfortunately, Mumbai airport doesn't have direct rail connectivity, so taking the train to or from the airport isn't recommended if you're unfamiliar with Mumbai's public transport system. There aren't any direct buses connecting the airport to the city center either. Auto rickshaws are an option but they only operate in the suburbs and won't take you to South Mumbai. Therefore, a taxi or car service is preferable for a less stressful journey.

Taxis and Hotel Transfers

The easiest way to get to your hotel is by taking a prepaid taxi from Level 1 of the new Terminal T2. Luggage charges are additional. Hotel pick-ups are available from Level 2. Prepaid taxis are also available at the domestic terminal. The counter is located near the exit of the arrivals area.

App-based cabs such as Uber and Ola operate at Mumbai airport, and are a good option if you have internet connectivity on your cell phone. The fare is usually less than a prepaid taxi. Do be aware that a surcharge is payable for airport pick-up though, and there can be a substantial wait during peak times.

Where to Eat and Drink

There are a wide array of food options for any budget at the Mumbai airport.

Terminal 1:

  • Cafe Chino: A low budget option for sandwiches and drinks.
  • Chai Time: Locally sourced teas.
  • Ultra Bar: A swank locale to grab a cocktail or beer.
  • Curry Kitchen: A mid-priced choice for north Indian cuisine and chaats (snacks).

Terminal 2:

  • Indian Kebab Grill: Freshly made meats, with vegetarian options as well.
  • Baker Street: A low budget pastry and coffee shop.
  • Olive Bistro: An Italian mid-priced restaurant.
  • Street Foods: An assortment of meals highlighting the street food of India.
  • The Beer Cafe: Grab a brew and a snack—the cafe has 10 varieties of tap beers and over 50 international beer brands.

Airport Lounges

Terminal 2 has a number of airport lounges for passengers.

  • GVK Lounge:  for first class and business class passengers. It's located on Level 3 and 4 of Terminal 2. Facilities include concierge, business center, library, spa and shower, smoking zone, food, and beverages.
  • Loyalty Lounge:  for holders of eligible MasterCard, Visa, Priority Pass, Airport Angle, Lounge Key, Diners and Amex cards. Paid access to the lounge is also available. It's located on Level 3 of Terminal 2. Facilities include a buffet, unlimited alcoholic beverages, reading materials, and wireless Internet.
  • Pranaam Lounge:  a less glamorous option for everyday passengers who wish to avail of lounge facilities. Buffet, nonalcoholic beverages, wireless Internet, baby care room, luggage storage, reading materials are provided.

Mumbai Airport Tips and Tidbits

  • One of the highlights of Terminal 2 is a grand museum that showcases Indian art on a long wall. The roof of Terminal 2 is also unique. It has been inspired by dancing white peacocks.
  • The international terminal is busiest at night, while the domestic terminal is busy during the day. Immigration and security check can be slow during peak times.
  • Runway congestion is a big problem at Mumbai airport. Flights are often delayed 20-30 minutes because of this.
  • Mumbai airport commonly causes confusion to travelers because both the international and domestic terminals, while being located in separate suburbs, are referred to as Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. If your ticket for a domestic flight states that it's departing from the international airport, this does not necessarily mean the international terminal. Make sure you check the terminal number and go to the correct one.
  • Prepare yourself for a stark contrast as you arrive because planes fly closely over the large slum next to the airport.

Where to Stay Near the Airport

Mumbai airport doesn't have any retiring rooms. However, there are plenty of airport hotels in the vicinity, including a transit hotel at Level 1 of Terminal 2.

Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex is a clean and well-maintained sea-facing attraction in South Mumbai. Located in one of the sophisticated localities, this Napeansea Road park overlooks many expensive apartments on the street. Every nook and corner of this 20 acres land has now become a powerhouse to keep the heart of Mumbai pumping. For more than 3 decades, this wonderland has served as a recreational site, and sports and fitness complex. Visit here early in the morning to witness the magic of this refuge for the inhabitants of Mumbai.  Also, Mumbaikars do not forget to visit here in the early monsoons to sit on its sea-facing end and seek a delight with the sound of soothing waves. Once, this piece of land was merely a rocky patch of the coastal area of Malabar. What you see today is a gorgeous lush green garden lined up with a total of 600+ coconut trees. With a perfect and well-maintained ambiance, this park is a boon for early morning yoga, jogging, walking, aerobics, and so on. The credit, of course, goes to its active group – the Malabar Hill Citizen Forum, who looks after it as its own child. You can connect with their authorities to be an annual member of the plethora of recreational sports activities that they organize. In addition to pumping the adrenaline of youth with its recreational touch, Priyadarshini Park of Mumbai also serves as an ideal family outing location and a lover’s point. If you are fortunate enough, you may even witness little squirrels accompanying you here for some pleasing views.

Babulnath

Whenever you are visiting Mumbai, Babulnath Shiva temple is a must-visit for inner peace and tranquillity. It is one of the oldest temples in Mumbai, which increases its importance in the eyes of the loyal devotees. Its walls are specially carved with limestone that depicts the Hindu mythology, which travellers find it exciting at the first look. At this temple, the beautiful marble flooring is specially brought down from Rajasthan. Thus, each step you take inside this temple feels royal and enchanting along with the daily devotees you can meet and greet, dressed in Indian attires. So, every moment spent in this temple is blissful with internal peace and devotion. Moreover, you can witness devotees from different corners of the world who love to pay their tribute to Lord Shiva and other idols.Once you enter the holy temple revered by so many Hindus and locals, you can find sculptures and idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Nandi with Kashyap. We would also advise you to buy a basket outside the temple steps before entering. This basket will bring joy, happiness and fulfil all your wishes once you pay your heartfelt worship to Shiva and other lords like Durga Mata and Goddess Parvati at the centre of this temple.  If you have any doubts regarding the same, you can always ask devotees around you or the priest to know how to get the prayer done with the basket that you buy.On the other hand, idols of Goddess Parvati and Durga Mata are respectfully placed in the centre of this temple. What’s even more special about this temple is that around 4 times a day, prayers for Lord Shiva are recited here. This temple gets approximately a lakh devotees for Darshan during the Mahashivratri. The whole scenario is a sight to behold and capture in your hearts to narrate stories about back home.
