Rock n Roll London Walking Tour

music tours of london

Love Classic Rock?   Want to see the places that helped shape rock music? Come along and join our Rock n Roll London Walking Tour.  Many of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll legends of all time have lived, performed and died in London. As the beating heart of Britain’s music industry, musicians and singer-songwriters flocked to our capital to make their name. From Rock to Blues, Pop to Punk, some of the biggest names in music have left their mark on this city. So join us to remember some of the greatest moments in popular music as we explore Rock ‘n’ Roll landmarks at the historic heart of the British music industry in Soho.

Tour Highlights

  • See the home of British Rock and Roll
  • Hear about the auditions that were held in the old Bricklayers Arms pub for a new band … The Rolling Stones
  • Walk down London’s famous Tin Pan Alley
  • See real locations that feature in song lyrics
  • Visit Carnaby Street, home of the Swinging 60s
  • See where Bohemian Rhapsody and many other classic rock tracks were recorded

No Rock n Roll London Walking Tour would be complete without visiting Soho. This alternative and quirky corner of London has been home to the British entertainment industry for decades. Over the years it has hosted some of the most iconic recording studios, gig venues, pub hangouts, theatres, music instrument shops and more.

The tour will start off at Tin Pan Alley this street was once the hub of Britain’s music industry. Elton John, David Bowie, the Kinks, Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols and many, many more each have a story to tell about this street. For decades this was home, in some cases literally, to London’s music scene.

Naturally, the tour will take you to the venues where many Rock-Gods first cut their teeth and developed their sound. These clubs include the former Marquee Club, often dubbed the most important venue in the history of modern pop music. You’ll also pass by the world-famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, a Mecca for jazz musicians. The club’s founder, Ronnie Scott was awarded an OBE for ‘services to jazz’ and this buzzing venue is still the place to go to see rising stars in the music industry.

During the tour, you’ll find out that show business isn’t always glamorous. As Led Zeppelin found out at their first rehearsal in a hot, cramped basement rammed with amplifiers. You’ll also be shown where Mick Jagger and John Lennon spent some time behind bars.

Many locals will walk past unassuming little doors, hidden down alleys, and squeezed in between shops, unaware that some of the greatest records of all time were recorded in the studios within. Fortunately, your trusty guide will be sure to point them out to you.

“Soho has always encapsulated Rock ’n’ Roll so Carnaby Street was the perfect spot for our own store.” If Carnaby Street is good enough for the Rolling Stones, then it’s good enough for us to visit on our tour. From the Swinging 60s to the New Romantics, Carnaby Street has attracted the Carnabetian Army.

Throughout the Rock n Roll London Walking Tour, you’ll be entranced by anecdotes about some of the biggest names in music including the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, T-Rex, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, the Smiths, and more …

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

LONDON’S ROCK ‘n’ ROLL LEGENDS TOURS

music tours of london

THE LONDON ROCK TOUR

You’ve found London’s ORIGINAL and founding rock tour company (since 1986). Often copied, never bettered!!

London is the Capital City of Rock and Popular Music and you now have the opportunity of being part of it joining tours of musical discovery with us.  In no other city will you find so much rock heritage in such a concentrated area – its been a magnet for rockers from Liverpool to Los Angeles, Manchester to Melbourne, Stockholm to Sao Paulo, Dublin to Detroit and Trenchtown to Toronto.

From the 1950s to the current day, musicians, singers, producers, bands, lyricists and writers have come to London to seek, or expand their fame and fortune  And in doing so, they leave a rich and growing legacy to be discovered and enjoyed: the recording studios where classic records have been made; stars homes, apartments and, alas, death sites; instantly recognisable film and video locations , and cityscapes captured forever on classic album covers ; venues small and large; clubs and pubs; sites of famed drug busts; trashed hotels; management company offices; secret rehearsal sites; street names made famous through song lyrics ; and boutiques and flea-markets where global fashion trends have started.

Beatniks and Teddy Boys, Mods and Hippies, Punks and Rastas, Heavy Metal and Heart Throbs; this is a city of monumental rock landmarks where hardly a street is without a rock back-story!

LONDON ROCK TOUR WALKS:

LRT can create special walking tours just for YOU! These are half day private walks per area and can be band or genre focused. Below are suggestions, combine them using public transport to create a private full day option if you wish. Your private tour is customised to best suit your wishes. To make a reservation/check guide availability, please send your request with travel dates to:   [email protected]

Why travel with a copycat, when you can go with the ORIGINAL London Rock Tour!

Soho & Covent Garden   – Explore the heart of the Entertainment District. Fashion and tunes! Here were the beatnik coffee houses, skiffle and jazz clubs of the 1950s; here are the ‘basement and attic’ venues for 60s folkies, R&B-ers and bluesmen, 70s punks and prog and New Wave bands started; where hip hop first hit the UK, where the ‘2nd British Invasion’ 80s bands became the New Romantics and the Goths. This area has grown from plague pits to gin palaces to supper clubs to peep shows to posh boutiques. If we had a penny for every time a Londoner said, “I’ve walked by there so many times, but I never knew…” Join us and peel back a few layers of heritage, 1920s through 1980s!

Brixton  –  Good vibes abound in vibrant Brixton! Delve into the musical, social, and cultural heritage on this 2 hour walking tour. Explore the famed Brixton markets and Electric Avenue. See Bowie’s childhood home, locations of famed venues past and present such as Brixton Academy, Gunnell brothers’ Ram Jam Club, and The Frig. Explore the area’s vaudeville past, roots of the riots, celebrate the local Caribbean culture, see amazing murals and the latest street art.

Fitzrovia – writers & rockers! Before the 50s, artists and writers were the ‘rock stars.’ This area ‘north of Soho’ has them all. Virginia Woolf, Dylan Thomas and George Orwell were all locals, we can explore the historic pubs they frequented. This is where Coldplay and Keane were ‘born’ and the first place Bob Dylan performed in London. Here were jazz and skiffle clubs, amazing recording studios, home base for a time for Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett, Barry Miles of IT, and Boy George; where Donovan ‘scored’ on Sunny Goodge Street…

Kensington — Where Freddie Mercury & Queen ruled! This area is chock full of Queen locations. See where they lived, partied and played. Of course see the regal Royal Albert Hall. Also explore Roxy Music’s high street fashion boutiques, the ‘working class Carnaby,’ history of Biba, some famed Stones locations, punk venues…

Chelsea — heart of the swingin’ 60s, here is hippie central and heart of Rolling Stones along the scenic river. Also follow the Punk London trail. Your private walk can be either theme or a mix of both. Along the way, glimpse the heritage of royals, writers and artists who called this place home. See places for Beatles, Eric Clapton, Sex Pistols, Clash, Poly Styrene, early Pink Floyd, Marianne Faithfull, swingin’ fashion hubs, a legendary wedding location…

Notting Hill — this area basically has it all!  Thrust into the spotlight 20 some years ago with the iconic Julia Roberts/Hugh Grant film, but this West London neighbourhood has a deep cultural heritage. Hippies, punks, rastas…new wave and today’s chart toppers like Adele. Our route takes us via some very scenic housefronts, cheery garden squares and nearly hidden mews. Pay respects where Jimi Hendrix died. Explore places for Bob Marley, The Clash, Pink Floyd, T Rex, Chrissie Hynde, Tom Jones, Lemmy and more. There are classic recording studios, perhaps find Love, Actually …

Mayfair/Carnaby Street  — Beatles, hippies, punks, Blitz Kids & Bowie – includes swingin’ Carnaby Street. Such a variety in a relatively small area, the ‘hidden’ backstreets of the capital await!

Camden — Amy Winehouse made this area her playground, here was the stomping ground for hippie London, The Clash and the punk revolution, then Madness and U2 in the 80s, Oasis and their Brit Pop rivalries in the 90s….now where Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Janelle Monae and others choose to perform.

Belgravia — Sloane Square, Eaton Square, Belgrave Square – and their surrounding small streets and mews where, back in the 60s, was an ideological battleground of young musicians and fledgling ‘Hollywood-ites’ against the older ‘bowler hats’ of The Establishment. Mix in recent TV costume drama settings if you wish…

London is Calling!!

David Beckham shares video of former girl group singing their hit Stop at private club Oswald’s in London, as Mel B hints at a tour

The Spice Girls have reunited for a rare performance featuring all five members – at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party, where they danced to their classic hit Stop.

The party was held on Saturday at Oswald’s, a private members’ club in London, with the likes of Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria and Gordon Ramsay also attending.

During the party, Beckham – along with fellow Spice Girls Geri Halliwell-Horner, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Emma Bunton – sang along to Stop as well as performing the signature choreography from the single off their 1997 sophomore album Spiceworld.

Beckham’s husband, David Beckham , posted a video to Instagram where he gleefully looked on. “I mean come on,” the 48-year-old former footballer captioned the video.

Victoria responded in the comments, writing: “Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much!”

Brown also hinted at a potential reunion tour. “About last night #tourdatescomingsoon,” she shared, reposting the video to her Instagram story.

Last month, Brown teased in an interview with Today that the Spice Girls were working on something “very good” together – though she did not confirm rumours of a tour at the time.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls, who formed in 1994 and officially split six years later in 2000.

They have reunited multiple times over the years – most recently as part of their 2019 Spice World tour, which Beckham did not attend. The last time all five members performed publicly was in 2012 for the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.

In 2023 the Beckhams’ marriage was explored in a four-part Netflix documentary series, which also addressed his rise to fame as a footballer and the extensive press speculation that he allegedly had an affair while playing for Real Madrid in 2003.

Taylor Swift Has Given Fans a Lot. Is It Finally Too Much?

Swift has been inescapable over the last year. With the release of “The Tortured Poets Department,” her latest (very long) album, some seem to finally be feeling fatigued.

Taylor Swift, on a platform, surrounded by men in suits.

By Matt Stevens and Shivani Gonzalez

Four new studio albums. Four rerecorded albums, too. A $1 billion oxygen-sucking world tour with a concert movie to match. And, of course, one very high-profile relationship that spilled over into the Super Bowl .

For some, the constant deluge that has peaked in the past year is starting to add up to a new (and previously unthinkable) feeling: Taylor Swift fatigue.

And it is a feeling that has only solidified online in the days following the release of “The Tortured Poets Department,” which morphed from a 16-song album into a 31-song, two-hour epic just hours after its release .

Many critics (including The New York Times’s own) have suggested that the album was overstuffed — simply not her best. And critiques of the music have now opened a sliver of space for a wider round of complaint unlike any Swift has faced over her prolific and world-conquering recent run.

“It’s almost like if you produce too much… too fast… in a brazen attempt to completely saturate and dominate a market rather than having something important or even halfway interesting to say… the art suffers!” Chris Murphy, a staff writer at Vanity Fair, posted on X .

Which is not to say nobody listened to the album; far from it. Spotify said “Poets,” which was released on Friday, became the most-streamed album in a single day with more than 300 million streams .

And of course, many of Swift’s most ardent fans, known as “Swifties,” loved her 11th album or, at least, have decided to air any reservations in private conversations. The first days of the album’s release have been greeted with the usual lyrical dissections for key allusions hidden within the songs, attention to every word that few other artists receive.

But others, including some self-identified Swift fans, have freely admitted frustration. Fans and critics alike have contended that Swift’s lyrics have become a tad verbose and that the tracks on this latest album — many of them breakup songs — sounded a whole lot like others she has already put out . The internet has also provided an almost unlimited supply of jokes about the length of the album .

Some admonished Swift for selling so many versions of “Poets” only to double its size after those orders were in, part of a cynically corporate rollout . (Care for the CD , vinyl or the Phantom Clear vinyl ?) The Daily Mail cobbled together what it deemed “The 10 WORST lyrics in Taylor Swift’s new album — ranked!”

For its part, Reductress , the satirical women’s magazine, offered a post titled “Woman Doing Her Best to Like New Taylor Swift Album Lest She Face the Consequences.”

Those who dare to publicly criticize Swift are acutely aware of the potential for backlash. Murphy, the Vanity Fair writer, made a dark joke about it . At least one X user who posted a lengthy thread eviscerating Swift, the album and its rollout took the post private after it got more than three million views. Paste Magazine opted not to put a byline on its harsh review of Swift’s album, citing safety concerns for the writer.

In an unusual twist, even Swift herself is widely viewed as admonishing her most militant defenders in one particular song on the new album, “But Daddy I Love Him.” Some contingents of Swift’s fanbase strongly disapproved of her brief relationship with Matty Healy of the 1975 and appear to now be bristling at the amount of record real estate Healy consumes on the latest album .

Weird, complicated times in Taylor land.

“It might be a tough few days for the fanbase,” Nathan Hubbard, a co-host of the Ringer podcast, “ Every Single Album ,” wrote in a social media thread about “Poets” on Friday . “They’ll hear some valid criticism they aren’t used to (if the critics dare), and for many they’ll have to reconcile their own truth that this isn’t their favorite, while still rightly celebrating it and supporting her.”

Indeed, grinding through the 31-song double album after midnight had felt like “a hostage situation,” Hubbard wrote.

On a new podcast episode, which was released over the weekend, Hubbard and his co-host, Nora Princiotti, were among those who pointed out that while the album may be imperfect, Swift simply may have needed to purge herself of the songs on “Poets” to process a turbulent time in her life.

Princiotti said she enjoyed much of the album and was careful to stipulate that “Poets” did contain several “special songs.”

But she also allowed for some “tough love.”

“Musically, I do not really hear anything new,” she said, adding that Swift “could have done a little bit more self editing.”

“I don’t think the fact that this is a double-album that is more than two hours in length serves what’s good about it,” Princiotti said. “And I think that for the second album in a row, I’m still sort of left going, ‘OK, where do we go from here?’”

Princiotti ultimately graded “Poets” a “B.” And in the world of her podcast and universe of Taylor Swift, Princiotti acknowledged — that might have been an all-time low.

An earlier version of this article misstated the title of Taylor Swift’s new album. It is “The Tortured Poets Department,” not “The Tortured Poets Society.”
