From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

How do I get to Nova Scotia?

There are plenty of ways to get to Nova Scotia including driving along the Trans-Canadian Highway and connecting with the Nova Scotia Highway 104, flying into Halifax Stanfield National Airport from various destinations within Canada, and catching public transport including ferry, bus, and train services.

How do I get around Nova Scotia?

Getting around Nova Scotia is super easy if you're traveling with a car or able to rent one from the airport once you've landed.

Without a car, getting to and from different places in Nova Scotia becomes more difficult with no clear public transportation system that will take you to the popular/tourist locations.

There are bus and shuttle companies that operate day tours from places such as Halifax to Lunenburg, as well as public transport systems within the larger cities themselves that are reliable and efficient.

What's the weather like in Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia's weather features four distinct seasons throughout the year: warm to hot summers and cold, snowy winters.

The shoulder seasons of fall and spring also experience typical weather patterns such as mild to warm temperatures and frequent rainfall.

When is the best time to visit Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia has something to offer in every season but the most popular time to travel to this maritime province is in summer when events and festivals are frequent and the weather's warm enough to lay out on its beaches.

The shoulder seasons of autumn and spring are also a great time to visit the region with fewer crowds, more availability, and lower accommodation prices than in the height of summer.

Some of the best things to do during these seasons are hiking and surfing.

What do I pack for a trip to Nova Scotia?

What to pack for a trip to Nova Scotia is largely like packing for any other destination but it does depend on what time of the year you're traveling in.

Temperatures rarely get that high in summer so packing dresses, t-shirts, and shorts will do the trick.

If you're traveling in winter make sure you rug up with waterproof jackets, coats, lots of layers, and thick socks.

Regardless of the season you're traveling in, you should always pack sunscreen, a reusable drink bottle, a backpack or day bag, and a camera.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Wonders of the Maritimes & Scenic Cape Breton (11 destinations)

Bus driver and tour guides were excellent: very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were fine, most lunches and dinners provided to us were good, as well. All hotels, with the exception of the Silver Dart, were excellent. At the Silver Dart, we had to request a room change because of the heavy mildew in the room. The carpeting was also stained in several spots. This hotel needs updating and dehumidification. This was the only hotel that was far from the center of town, which made dining out a challenge, and was far below our standards. We met wonderful people and even exchanged phone numbers with a few. Despite the disappointment with the Silver Dart, the overall tour, meals, accommodations and fellow passengers made up for it! Excellent overall!

Highlights of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island

This tour director, Marina, was excellent -- organized, caring and efficient. She had to make some adjustments on the fly due to weather and other circumstances, but all went smoothly and we got everything that was promised and more. The bus (or "coach") was exceptionally comfortable (good legroom!) and gave good views of surroundings. (A tiny quibble -- it would be nice if the sound system allowed the use of earphones when videos are played so you don't have to listen if you don't want to.) The driver was pleasant and good at the actual driving, but perhaps needed training as he appeared to require close supervision by the tour director. All of the hotels were clean, comfortable and well located, but the Holman Grand in Charlottestown was a standout. The location guides were all very good and the stops were well chosen. I feel that I got an excellent overview of Bar Harbor, Nova Scotia, and PEI. Personally I could have used a little more free time and less emphasis on meals, but I imagine that the majority preferred the schedule as it was. The ferry trip from Bar Harbour to Yarmouth was unfortunate, as the seas were rough and many people got sick. I was okay but it was a long 3 hours. However, in better weather this could be a highlight. The Tatoo in Halifax was spectacular. My only slight issue with the tour company was that communication from the head office was sparse. We paid our money months ago and got no further information until a few days before the tour began, when we were mailed a letter which told us the name of the tour director and the hotels, but very little else. There was a last minute change to the hotel for the starting and ending point, probably for the better, but it was inconvenient for me as I was a flying in to Bangor and instead of a free hotel shuttle I had an expensive taxi ride to Ellsworth. If I had know earlier I might have modified my travel plans and flown in to Bar Harbour. Overall I felt that the tour was mostly geared to those folks taking the bus up from Connecticut with little attention to those flying in from longer distances (other than by Marina, who was as helpful as she was able). This was not made clear in the listing on Tourradar where I chose and booked the tour. Nevertheless, the tour was good value and very good quality and overall a great experience.

What people love about Nova Scotia Tours

It was an excellent trip!
The wonders of the Bay of Fundy tour was the best tour I’ve ever been on. We were a small group who enjoyed each other’s company and shared many varied and interesting experiences. As a solo traveler I was welcomed by everyone in the group and never felt on my own. Our tour director, Eunice, was welcoming, knowledgeable and went the extra mile to ensure we really experienced the local culture and delicacies. Our coach driver, Hank, who was also welcoming and knowledgeable, had a quietly confident manner which made you feel extremely safe when on the road. He also went the extra mile to ensure we got the most out of every experience. I would highly recommend this tour.

The weather could not have been more perfect – following some dreary days prior! We were welcomed aboard a beautiful sailboat by three very friendly crew mates! Anna greeted us with a chilled glass of wine and the table was spread with a very inviting charcuterie board. We soon met our shipmates, three lovely ladies, two from Australia and one from Ontario. Caleigh was our captain and Andrew her first mate. They shared the perfect amount of details about the area and were very open to questions. Anna did a great job introducing each wine with interesting tidbits of information about the vineyards. She obviously loves wine like we do! We learned a lot about the local history, but also had time to just enjoy the view. I highly recommend this lovely way to spend a summer evening! -Happy Customer ( see more reviews )

If you’re looking for a unique way to explore Halifax, you’ll definitely want to consider the Harbour Hopper tour , which travels on both land and water aboard a nifty, renovated amphibious Vietnam War vehicle. This unconventional method of transportation gives you an overview of some of Halifax’s key landmarks, including St Paul’s Cathedral, Citadel Hill and Halifax Public Gardens, before splashing into Halifax Harbour for panoramic views of the waterfront.

The ambiguous vehicle made this tour extremely enjoyable and the street and water tour was amazing. I loved all the sites and recommend this to anyone who is questioning. The price is affordable and definitely worth it! -Linda ( see more reviews )

15. Alexander Keith’s Brewery Tour

The Alexander Keith's Brewery tour is one of our favourite tours in Halifax.

⭐️  RATING:  5 out of 5 Stars (140 reviews) | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH: 1 Hour | 🚀  BOOK NOW

Whenever people ask us about our most memorable experiences in Nova Scotia, one of the tours that always comes to mind is Alexander Keith’s Brewery in Halifax . While the way beer is made is more-or-less the same at every brewery, what makes Alexander Keith’s different is both its history and the overall performance of the tour itself. First off, this is one of the oldest breweries in North America, which is quite evident in the building itself. Founded in 1820, the beer is still wildly popular from coast to coast and on this tour, you’ll get to visit the facilities, learn about the brewing process and the brewery’s history, sample a number of beers, and enjoy some good east coast entertainment.

Great tour! We walked through 3 separate rooms with 3 different guides who gave us lots of history of the brewery in a fun manner, along with a complementary glass of brew. The last room is a bar where we had more tastings along with some great music performed by 3 talented guides. Lots of fun!! -Jacob ( see more reviews )

"The Nova Scotia experience was fantastic. The scenery was something that needs to be experienced first hand and just enjoyed. Having the tour guides to help us along and assist us in understanding and interpreting what we were seeing was probably the most important aspect of taking a guided tour over driving ourselves. On our own, we would not have had half of the experiences we did on this tour - we would never have known what to look for. This was our first guided tour. We were relatively unsure of a group outing after always being on our own. As a result of the experience, we are planning our next tour - with Caravan." Mr. & Mrs. A.D., Cherry Hill, New Jersey
"I have traveled extensively with several different tour companies and am very pleased with my experience with Caravan. They deliver what they promise and provide a pleasant and hassle-free vacation." Ms. A.R., Ventura, California
"A++. We can’t say enough about every aspect of this spectacular 1,300 mile journey. Our tour director and driver were so caring and knowledgeable and they made this journey one that will be remembered and cherished always. We had adequate time to take photos and videos, and the accommodations were 5 star. Every aspect of this trip far exceeded our expectations. We will definitely take another Caravan Tour!" Mr. & Mrs. R.H., Nashua, New Hampshire
"This was one of the best tours we’ve been on. Saw many things the average traveler wouldn’t. The director and driver worked well together as a team. Our director was an unbelievably kind and informative person. She went above and beyond for all of us." Mr. & Mrs. K.S., Bassano, Alberta
"Our director enthusiastically greeted and welcomed all us travelers from all parts of the USA. I noted her spontaneous laugh and good humor as we set out on our days ahead in the Maritime Provinces. She told us all about the Bay of Fundy and Bore tide. We walked on the ocean floor among very interesting rock formations. What a miracle of nature. We crossed Prince Edward Island on the Confederation Bridge, and learning how hard and difficult it was to construct made all the difference in appreciating it. All the incredible places and people we met along the way on Cape Breton, balmy weather and seeing a an eagle swoop down in the bay for chicken was such a forever memory. At Cheticamp the latch hook rugs were works of art and such fun to recall Stella Camus creating them from ages 16 to 91! The Cabot Trail is so incredibly beautiful. Halifax’s Maritime museum will be forever remembered. Again, our director did everything possible to make our tour the best, always gave us suggestions and time lines to various outings. She took worry and concerns away as we felt safe and taken care of in her charge. I look forward to traveling again with Caravan and feel sure you have the best travel plans ahead for us." Ms. C.S., West Linn, Oregon
"We had wanted to take this trip for awhile. It was everything we had hoped for and more. We saw things we had never seen. The ride on the bus provided beautiful, breathtaking scenery. Fantastic tour director, wonderful driver, great group of people, food was great and scenery unbelievable. Caravan does a great tour! It was our first but will not be our last." Mrs. C.H., Flushing, Michigan
"Caravan did a marvelous job providing an introduction to the Canadian Maritimes. I very much liked the sightseeing and activities. I especially enjoyed the sailing trip near Alexander Graham Bell’s house, the bald eagles with their brilliant antics. I also liked the visit to Louisbourg: what a wonderful restoration. There was much to learn about the environment, spirituality, and human intersectionality. How all these elements coalesced is an astonishment to me. What a superb tour! Ours was truly a brilliant director, the Maritimes meant the world to him and by extension, to us. He is a true national treasure." Mr. K.M., Ithaca, New York

Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety & Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. Digby Pines is a non-smoking resort. Local legislation in Canada varies greatly with respect to smoking. Generally, all the provinces visited – Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island – ban smoking in public places. Hotel guest rooms are generally exempt from these regulations.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

The Prince Edward Island & Nova Scotia journey is moderately-paced for the enjoyment of all guests. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Canada. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The CDC operates a 24-hour information number at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Nova Scotia is tempered by the ocean and in Prince Edward Island by the warm waters of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Summers tend to be warm, with very low humidity. From June through early September, average high temperatures range from 65 to 75˚F (18 to 24˚C); average low temperatures range from 45 to 55˚F (7 to 13˚C). Rainfall is spread evenly throughout the year at a moderate 4 in (102 mm) per month.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

Most of our hotels offer valet laundry service for a fee. Please inquire at time of booking.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription (or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you), a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Eastern Canada:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater, jacket or windbreaker for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/ cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Nova Scotia TRAVEL GUIDE

Nova Scotia

Fodor's Nova Scotia & Atlantic Canada: With New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island & Newfoundland Whether you want to visit Cape Breton Island, eat fresh lobster and mussels, or learn...

For many, Nova Scotia evokes images of seascapes. To the south and east, the Atlantic crashes against rocky outcrops or washes placidly over white sand. To the northwest, Fundy tides—the highest in the world—recede to reveal mudflats, then rush back in, raising the sea level by more than 50 feet. To the north, warm, relatively shallow Northumberland Strait flows between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, providing a livelihood for fishermen on both sides. Nova Scotia is one of the world’s largest exporters of seafood, particularly lobsters. But the province is much more than its coastline alone; its coastal capital, Halifax, is a lively and attractive business and tourism hub.

It was Thomas Chandler Haliburton who first said "seeing is believing," and the observation applies to his home province because it's hard to fathom such a variety of cultures and landscapes packed into an area smaller than West Virginia without witnessing it firsthand. Within the perimeter drawn by that convoluted coastline, lie the rolling farmlands of the Annapolis Valley, which yields vintner’s grapes, apples, corn, peaches, and plums. In the middle of the province, dense forests are interspersed with blueberry patches, cranberry bogs, and, in spring and summer, open fields of wildflowers—purple and blue lupines, yellow coltsfoot, pink fireweed—that blanket the ground with color. In Cape Breton are highlands that rival Scotland's, rugged rock-rimmed inlets, woodlands that provide spectacular fall foliage, and mountains that plunge dramatically down to meet the waves. Throughout the province there is great biodiversity, including a number of endangered and threatened species that are being actively protected. In the western arm, the Southwest Nova UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the second largest in Canada, includes the remote Kejimkujik National Park, which protects old-growth transitional woodland and all the wildlife that depends upon it.

The people of Nova Scotia are equally diverse. The original inhabitants, the Mi'Kmaqs, have been here for 10,000 years and remain a major cultural presence. In the early days of European exploration, they were joined by the French and English who settled on the shores and harvested the sea. Later, waves of immigrants came: Germans in Lunenburg County; Highland Scots displaced by their landlords' preference for sheep; New England Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution; freedmen or escaped slaves; then Ukrainians, Poles, West Indians, Italians, and Lebanese drawn to the industrial centers of Halifax and Sydney.

That multicultural mélange accounts for the fact that you’ll see Gaelic signs in Mabou and Iona, German sausage and sauerkraut prominently featured on menus in Lunenburg, and Francophones proudly flying their own tricolor flag in Acadian communities along the western Fundy coast and places such as Chéticamp in Cape Breton. It also helps explain why Nova Scotians, who originally hailed from so many different places themselves, are so famously hospitable to "people from away."

Nova Scotia Tours & Travel Guide

Nova Scotia Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Wild and beautiful Nova Scotia is a classically beautiful destination - perfect for outdoorsy outings like kayaking and biking. This maritime province in Eastern Canada offers wildlife viewing, old stately homes, and idyllic settings. Get ready to slow down the pace, get out your camera, and enjoy the natural beauty here.

Getting to Nova Scotia

Most people decide to fly into Nova Scotia. The airport, Halifax Stanfield International Airport, is situated about 20 miles outside of Halifax, the capital. There are options to arrive by ferry boat or through a cruise ship from both Canada and Eastern United States.

The bay ferry departs from Bar Harbor, Maine, and docks in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, which sits on the western coast of Nova Scotia. If you’re in New Brunswick, Canada, you can take a boat from Saint John to Digby, Nova Scotia.

Digby is on the northwestern coast of NS and is about a 2.5 hour drive from Halifax. Ferry rides are also optional from Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island or Argentia, Newfoundland.

Top Things to See in Nova Scotia

1. Halifax Waterfront

If you’re visiting the city of Halifax, take a stroll along the waterfront. Starting at Pier 21, there is the Canadian Museum of Immigration. Continue the walk and explore the shops, galleries, and restaurants.

Parked along the waterfront are some of the final WWII convoy escort corvettes. There is also the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, which is the oldest continuously running farmers’ market in North America.

2. Lunenburg is a town about an hour outside of Halifax, making for a great day trip from the city. Explore the narrow streets and unique architecture of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Colorful buildings line the waterfront, as well as tall ships. Visitors can even see the Bluenose II, a replica of an original schooner boat that is found on the Canadian dime!

3. Cape Breton Highlands National Park

Looking for some outdoor time? Head towards Cape Breton Highlands NP, known as the #1 Drive in North America . This Island, one of the world’s must-see islands, sits on the east of Nova Scotia. The park is filled with cliffs and river canyons that border the Atlantic Ocean.

Visit the 186 Cabot Trail, which offers 26 hiking/walking trails, shopping areas along the trail, and marvelous scenery. The beaches, the waterfalls, and gorgeous lookout points make this a nature lovers dream.

4. Nova Scotia Wineries

The climate and soil in Nova Scotia makes it an ideal place for grapes to grow. Discover the wines at one of the 18 wineries found in the province, including traditional method wine, to icewine, and the signature appellation wine.

Spend the day (or the weekend!) on the Good Cheer Trail, consisting of Canada’s first winery, craft brewery, distillery and cider trail. Collect the stamps along the trail for an opportunity to win a prize!

Wildlife in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is a prime destination for wildlife viewing . Here are just some of the animals you can spot in Nova Scotia:

1.  Beavers are known for their dam building. From their webbed feet, a flat tail for swimming, and the flaps in their nose/ears that close while diving, their body is adapted to live in the water. Their diet is made up of bark, leaves, and twigs from trees. They live between forested areas, and slow-flowing water sources.

2. Black Bears are the only type of bear that is found in Nova Scotia. They can be found hanging out in the woods or near swamps. The bears often have a black coat in Nova Scotia. Bears can be found rummaging through garbage for food, but often eat plants and animals. Bears den in the winter, and when they are denning, they are unconscious, meaning they don’t eat or drink during this time.

3. Moose is the largest member of the deer family. They are a dark brown in color, with gray legs, large head, and humped shoulders. Males get new antlers every spring that last until early winter. These animals are very hefty – smaller females weigh in at nearly 600 pounds, and large males can top off around nearly 1100 pounds! Both males and females are between 5 feet to 6.5 feet tall.

4. Humpback whale are black on top and white on their belly, with a fin on the back of their body. The best opportunity to see a humpback whale is in the warmer months (April-October) when they migrate north. They are often spotted in the coastal areas of Nova Scotia, seen leaping out of the water.

5. River otters are dark brown on their back, with a light gray or brownish belly. They have webbed feet, eyes that are high up on their heads, and whiskers that help them feel for food in the dark. Look for trail they leave while sliding in the snow/mud on their stomach.

6. Big Cat s - In Canada, there are three members of the cat family, including the bobcat, lynx and cougar .

The bobcat are known for their black ear tufts and short tails. Fur colors can be anywhere from yellow, gray, brown or reddish. Bobcats are on the smaller side, clocking in at 2.5 to three feet in length.

Lynx are similar size in length as bobcats, and weigh around 20 pounds. Fur Coats are grayish brown with some white or light gray areas. Lynx have a ruff of fur that frames their face with black tipped ears.

Cougars range anywhere from 5 feet long on the smaller side (usually females, the males are larger) to 8-9 feet in length. Their weight ranges from 80 pounds to nearly 200 pounds.

Cuisine in Nova Scotia

Right off the Atlantic Ocean, Nova Scotia is known for its seafood! Some notable foods include:

1. Digby Scallops are often picked right from the Bay of Fundy, home of the largest scallop fishing fleet in the world. Try the scallops in a seafood linguine, topped on chowder, deep fried or pan-seared.

2.  Donair was named the official food of Halifax in 2015. It consists  of pita topped with spiced beef, topped with garlic sauce, tomatoes and onions.

3.  Dulse is an edible red seaweed, also found in the Bay of Fundy. The seaweed can be eaten as a snack, or can be made into products such as powder or soap. Visitors can join a seaweed picking experience, where you can hand-pick your own seaweed in Gulliver’s Cove.

4.  Oatcakes are a great morning snack paired with coffee. They can be found in bakeries and cafés around Nova Scotia. They come either chewy or crunchy, and can be topped with a bit of sweetness from chocolate or peanut butter.

5.  Rapure/Rappie Pie is a comfort food for Nova Scotians. Potatoes are grated and pressed to remove the moisture, cooked in broth and baked until the edges are crispy. Chicken or clam is often added to this dish. You’re most likely to find this dish in the Southwest corner of Nova Scotia, on the Acadian shore.
