Planning your trip to Japan: Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo Itinerary

Japan is one of my favourite places in Asia because of its amazing food! Think: the freshest sashimi, sushi, endless ramen stores, et cetera... Over the past two years, I've been fortunate enough to visit the Kanto, Kansai, and Hokkaido prefecture! There's still a lot more to explore in Japan such as the Kyushu regions of Okinawa and Fukuoka, but I'm bringing you itineraries of the more popular three cities: Tokyo, Osaka, and Hokkaido. Even if you are not heading to all three prefectures, these itineraries would also give you a good plan of what you can do for each of these cities.

How many days are needed for each city?

We did 5 days for each prefecture and felt that it was just enough to cover the sights although having more time would allow you to experience more of Japan.

However, if you are planning to travel from one prefecture to the next (e.g. Osaka to Tokyo), we do recommend you to plan for either 7, 14, or 21 days. Reason being is because the JR pass that allows you unlimited travel on the trains have passes for 7, 14, and 21. You could also slot in an extra day is necessary for your transfers to and fro the airport.

We do know that sometimes the number of days aren't quite determined by you because #worklife and it really depends on the number of leave days you can get off work. Just do keep in mind the following JR pass options and the rest of the days which are not covered by the JR pass can be spent at a particular city, using their local trains. For instance, if you can only head to Tokyo for 10 days, get the 7 day JR pass and spend the rest of the 3 days touring Tokyo.

How to get cheap tickets to Japan?

The reason why we've been to Japan so many times the past two years was that we managed to snag cheap tickets. We flew to Tokyo on Singapore Air and paid roughly 570 SGD per pax, Hokkaido was a crazy last minute Singapore to Sapporo non-stop promotion by Scoot which we paid roughly 200 SGD each, and finally Osaka was another promotion on Scoot and we paid about 440 SGD per pax.

Also, if you do really intend to take the Shinkansen and travel to various prefectures in Japan, buy a multi-destination ticket ! What that means is that if you fly in to Osaka, choose to fly out either from Tokyo or Sapporo so that you won't have to make the round back to Osaka to fly out of Japan. This saves you time and allows you to use that time that you'll have to travel back to explore more of Japan. Plus, sometimes, there's not much of a difference in the prices even if you were to buy a round trip ticket.

Now that you've figured out where you are flying in to and how many days you are spending in Japan, pick from one of these travel plans: 5 days, 7 days, and 14 days itineraries .

5 Days in Japan (Tokyo vs Osaka vs Sapporo)

If you only have 5 days, you will need to choose if you are visiting Tokyo, Osaka, or Hokkaido. With only 5 days, you may also want to make these cities as base and travel only in the day. Should you wish to move from city to city, it may mean a lot of luggage moving (even if you are only travelling with one bag pack).

A. 5 days in Tokyo Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Hotel + Explore City

Airport to City

There are two airports in Tokyo, the Narita Airport and Haneda Airport. While Narita Airport is the main International Airport in Tokyo, Haneda is slightly closer to the city. Depending on your airline, you may be able to choose which airport you land in and depart from.

(Narita Airport --> City)

1. By train (approx 60 - 90 mins)

There are various trains that would take you from the airport to Tokyo Station. The JR Narita Express takes about an hour and is the fastest way to get to the city. However, ticket prices aren't the cheapest. It costs 3000 yen for a one-way trip and 4000 yen for two-way, which makes it a no-brainer that you should totally get the round trip! The other option is the JR Sobu Line , it takes 90 mins and costs less than half the price of the JR Narita Express.

2. By Bus (approx 100 mins)

Buses are a great way as a transportation to and from the airport as you will definitely get a seat, plus you do not need to worry about any transfers (should you be staying at Tokyo Station) even though it takes slightly longer than the trains. You can purchase a limousine bus ticket online , or at the ticket counter at Narita Airport. Purchase the two way tickets if you are departing from the same airport to enjoy some cost-savings!

3. Private Transfers (approx 100 mins)

Should you be feeling like a Crazy Rich Asian, try the private transfers for a whopping 519 SGD .

(Haneda Airport --> City)

1. By train (approx 30 - 35 mins)

From Haneda Airport, you can board the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho Station and change to either the JR Yamanote or JR Keihin-Tohoku Line to your destination in Tokyo. Alternatively you could take the Keikyu Railway to Shinagawa Station and change to the same JR Yamanote or JR Keihan-Tohoku Line . Both ways cost roughly the same and the Keikyu Railway is only 5 minutes behind.

2. By Bus (approx 40 - 45 mins)

Buses from Haneda Airport to the city takes about 40 to 45 minutes, depending on the traffic situation. It does cost more than the train options but especially for families with children, sometimes having a seat and the fact that you do not need to squeeze is extremely helpful!

3. Private Transfers (approx 40 - 45 mins)

Should you be feeling like a Crazy Rich Asian, try the private transfers from Haneda Airport for 231 SGD .

Where to stay in Tokyo?

Wherever you decide to stay in Tokyo, you may want to consider staying in one of the areas close to the JR Yamanote Line. The Yamanote Line is a circular line that brings you to major attractions in Tokyo. For those like being in the middle of all the 'action', Shinjuku and Shibuya are great options.

We decided to stay in Shinjuku at the APA Hotel Shinjuku Gyoemmae . We chose this hotel because of the affordable pricing (53,460 yen = 660 SGD for 5 mights) and it was in a quieter region of Shinjuku. Especially for those going during the Sakura season, you'll be a stone's throw away from the Gyoemmae Park. The room is tiny, but all the amenities are available. They even have an onsen at the basement where you can enjoy soaking in, especially during the winter season!

Exploring Shinjuku

There's just so much to cover in Shinjuku and the night is still young whichever time you'll reach Tokyo. From its food to the countless of bars, there's always something to do in Tokyo's Shinjuku.

Day 2: Exploring Tokyo City (Tsukiji Fish Market - Sensoji Shrine - Meiji Shrine - HArajuku - Shibuya>

Start your day bright and early by visiting Tsukiji Fish Market . For those who really want to watch the tuna bidding, you'll have to be there as early as 4 am in the wee hours. Otherwise, just roaming around the outer market is really fun too!

Just look at the crowd! We were there in the early afternoon so it was already flooded with tourists and locals. If you can, you may wish to head over earlier where everyone's still in bed! When you're there, snack on the freshly shuckled and grilled seafood, or shop for the souvenirs at the variety of stores. After filling your bellies, visit the Senso-ji Shrine . The Senso-ji Shrine is recognisable by its large lantern in the middle. The shrine is extremely crowded so do be prepared to squeeze with the crowd. Nonetheless, there are still quite a bit to see and souvenirs to buy in the shrine grounds.

In the late afternoon, Meiji Shrine located at Shibuya, in Yoyogi Park. If there is one shrine to visit, you'll definitely need to head to the Meiji Shrine. there is quite a bit of walking required to reach the shrine. The start of the trail is marked by the large Torii gate. After you pass it, you'll somehow will be able to get away from the crowded bustling city sounds, and enter the forest trail. Do note, however, that the shrine is currently undergoing some renovations. As such, the treasure house is closed.

After all that walking, head over to check out Harajuku . This is where all the cool kids hang out! The popular shopping street is Takeshita Street and there's all sorts of interesting fast fashion and your Harajuku Crepes. You'll find popular eateries in the Harajuku area such as Luke's Lobster and Dominque Ansel as well.

You'll can then spend the night at Shibuya . There's the Shibuya Crossing, Hachikyo Memorial and several shopping malls like Shibuya 109 where the ladies can shop to their hearts content.

Day 3: Tokyo DisneySEA / Disneyland / Fuji-Q Highland

On your third day, you could head to popular theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySEA. Great for families with children, you'll have to make a pit stop to Disneyland. Otherwise, you could head to Fuji-Q Highland to try to catch a glimpse of the elusive Mount Fuji!

Day 4: Day Trip to Hakone and Yokohama

For your fourth day, if you would like to get out of the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, a great day trip would be to visit Hakone. Especially for onsen lovers, you can even head to one of the onsens to get a soak. We manage to complete Hakone in half a day and decided to stop by Yokohama on the way back!

Day 5: Flying Home + Last bits of Tokyo

On your final day, you could re-explore the Shibuya or Shinjuku regions before heading to the airport. Another attraction that you could head to is the Tokyo Tower. Just like the effiel tower, the Tokyo Tower is a communications and observation tower in Shibuya and is the second-tallest tower in Japan.

B. 5 days in Osaka Itinerary

Besides being the food capital of Japan, Osaka is a brilliant place to visit the Kansai region! Get a glimpse of everything in just 5 days!

Day 1: Transfer to Hotel + Explore Osaka's Vibrant Night Life

From the Kansai Airport, take the Nankai Line Airport Express to the JR Namba Station and transfer to your respective hotels. We stayed at APA Hotel Namba-Eki Higashi which was located close to the Namba Station and was in walking distance to the Dotonburi area. It was a small room but we had everything we needed!

We chose the location primarily for us to make full use of day and to explore bits of Dotonburi and Shinsaibashi each night when we were there! After you've checked in, head over to Dotonburi for some shopping and catch a glimpse of the Glico Man at the Ebisu Bridge. If you're there in the day, you can also head to Kuromon Ichiba Market !

Day 2: Day Trip to Kyoto

Start your day bright and early and head to Kyoto. One day may not be sufficient and those who are in Japan for a much longer time should consider staying one night in Kyoto. The old capital is simply beautiful and there's just so many attractions there like:

- Fushimi Inari Shrine

- Gion District

- Nishiki Market

- Yasaka Shrine

- Kiyomizu Dera

- Togetsukyo Bridge

- Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

Day 3: Day Trip to Nara + Osaka Castle

Besides the deers in Nara, there's a whole lot more to see. Besides, Nara is really just a couple of hours from Osaka. It is a great day or half day trip to enjoy the wild animals!

If you still have energy after walking the entire day, stop by Osaka Castle! The Osaka Castle is rich in history and is a convenient stop while on your way back from Nara. But, don't head to Osaka castle without knowing these 5 fun facts !

Tip: Wear good walking shoes as there's quite a bit of walking to do in both places!

Day 4: Day Trip to Kobe + Exploring Osaka

On your almost last day in Osaka, you may want to fill your tummies with good Japanese beef. Kobe makes for a good day trip as it is only a short 30 minutes from Osaka. Also, we got an amazing find: The Nunobiki Herb Garden. There's beautiful flowers and a great cafe overlooking the rest of Kobe!

Day 5: Flying Home + Last bits of Osaka

On your final day, waste no time in visiting the remaining unexplored attractions. Namely, you should really check out food and shopping districts like America-mura!

C. 5 days in Hokkaido Itinerary (Sapporo / Otaru)

Day 1: airport to hotel + exploring susukino.

To get to Hokkaido, most travellers would have to enter via the New Chitose Airport. Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and it will be a great stop for exploring nearby cities such as Otaru or to get to the ski slopes during winter. After getting to the airport, it is only a 45-minute ride via the Airport Express to Sapporo. You can purchase the tickets from the Airport Express counter.

You may also wish to get the JR Hokkaido IC Card - Kitaca that acts like an ezlink where you tap and pay your transport fare, instead of heading to the station every time to queue for the tickets. The card come preloaded when you purchase it and has a refundable deposit of 500 yen when you "trade-in" your card when you exit Hokkaido.

Accommodation in Sapporo?

There are many hotels in Sapporo and some of the chains in Japan include APA hotels and resorts, toyoko-inn, and Hotel Sunroute. If you're looking for Ryokan stays, you will need to visit the smaller cities outside Sapporo.

For our 4 nights, we stayed at APA Hotel Sapporo Susukino Ekimae (24,800 yen / about 300 sgd for 4 nights) . The location was superb. It was only 2 stations away from Sapporo station on the Toho Line . And it is located right outside exit 3 of Hosui-Susukino subway station .

It is walking distance to Susukino, Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade, and Odori Park where the Sapporo TV tower is located. There are many amazing restaurants nearby as well! We thoroughly enjoyed staying here where we could visit Don Quixote and play at the Round 1 Arcade till late!

What to do on my first day? (Susukino - Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade - Nijio Market)

On the first day, you will likely want to familiarise yourself with your base. Take some time to explore Susukino . Susukino is Japan's largest entertainment district. Other than the glitzy bars, pachinko slot machines and the red-light districts, Susukino is home to several popular restaurants and stores. Of particular mention, the popular 24 hour Don Quixote and the Ramen Yokocho can be found here!

To get to Susukino, take the Nanboku Line to Susukino station (two stops from Sapporo Station, and one stop from Odori Park Station).

Head over to Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade in the area for some shopping! The Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade spans 1km and is a covered walking street. It houses many souvenir stores, restaurants, and even hotels. Of which, popular Don Quixote and ABC sits on this street! Our opinion is that the stores in the shopping arcade are a little too touristy. So it is worth a visit, but you can find better food and shopping elsewhere!

To get to Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade, the closest subway is the Tanukikoji station on the Toho Line.

If you are there in the day, head over to the Nijio Market to grab a snack - the freshest fish or even the famed Hokkaido Snow Crab. To get to Nijio Market, the closest subway is Hosui-Susukino station on the Toho Line.

Day 2: Sapporo City Walk + Shiroi Koibito Park + Maruyama Park (Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama Zoo)

On your second day, get ready a pair of good walking shoes to explore Sapporo. First up, head to Odori Park.

Odori Park is a park that lies in the heart of Sapporo. It is a long stretch from the Sapporo TV Tower to the Sapporo City Archive Building. Several events are held here throughout the year and the noteworthy one is the Sapporo Snow Festival.

What's amazing about this park also is that on a clear day and at night, you can even see the Mt Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium as the park separates the city into two parts where there are no tall buildings in this entire stretch. For a better view, visit the Sapporo TV Tower ! Skip the queue and get your tickets here !

We visited Odori Park in the day, and again at night as it offers different views. If you have the time, do so too!

To get to Odori Park, catch a metro to Odori Station or Nishi juitchome Station at the other end.

Not too far away from Odori Park is the Sapporo Clock Tower . The Clock Tower is a historical landmark built in the 1980s which has become the landmark of Sapporo. If you're interested, there's also a museum inside to learn more about the history of the city. Then, you can continue to head to the red brick Sapporo Government Office .

Once you're done, head over to Sapporo Station to have breakfast / lunch before heading over to the Shiroi Koibito Park.

If you love Ishiya's Langue de Chat, you definitely need to go to Shiroi Koibito Park . The Ishiya Chocolate Factory is easy to get to. Take the subway Tozai Line to the end of the line, Miyanosawa station. From there, it is a 10 minute walk to the factory. There are guides and signage throughout the station that will lead you to the Shiroi Koibito Park. You'll have to cut through Sapporo Lifelong Learning Research Center Chieria and a beautiful walk to the Park.

The park's really beautiful! You can roam around the garden for free but if you would like to check out the museum, you'll have to get a 'passport'. This costs 600 yen and you'll get one complimentary Langue de chat!

After purchasing the passport, head up to the entrance. At the entrance, you'll be able to customise your own Langue de chat tins! You can either choose to email your own photograph, or have one taken there where they will add a background to your liking. This costs 3,075 yen for the 36-cookie tin, and 4,345 yen for the 54 cookie tin. It is only a bit more than if you get the original tin, so why not purchase your own tins as a souvenir! :)

On your way back from the Shiroi Koibito Park, drop by Maruyama Park . It is also on the subway Tozai Line and you can get to Maruyama Park by getting off at the Maruyama-Koen station. It is a short walk from the station to the park. The Muruyama Park is a huge park and requires a lot of walking to complete. Inside the Muruyama Park, you can find the Hotaki and Hokkaido Shrine, Maruyama Zoo, and the Maruyama Stadium.

You may not have time to visit all of them but definitely head to the Hotaki and Hokkaido Shrine as well as the Maruyama Zoo . The Maruyama Zoo was one of the most experiential zoo I've been to, you can literally see a lion up close through a hopefully very thick glass. These will take up the rest of the afternoon and you can head back to Susukino to enjoy delicious food thereafter!

Day 3: Day Trip to Otaru

On your third day, you may want to take a day trip to Otaru!

This will take an entire day and you can return to Sapporo in the evening.

Day 4: Ski Trip / Onsen Trip

On your fourth day, we recommend that you take a trip to the ski resorts (if in Winter), or head to a nearby Onsen such as the Hokkaido Jozankei Resort. There is a half-day tour which grants you access to the onsen, two way transport, as well as a buffet lunch. You can purchase the Onsen Tour online . We didn't manage to do any of these when we were there because we woke up way to late for the transport to the ski park (lol). So if you really do want to visit, wake up early!

Some of the ski resorts we recommend are:

- Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort (for beginners)

- Sapporo Teine

These resorts are located close to Sapporo and most of these resorts have shuttle buses that bring you there and back!

Day 5: Sapporo Beer Museum + Flying Home

For the fifth day, if you still have the time, you can head to the nearby Sapporo Beer Museum . Tour the beer museum by purchasing an entrance ticket but what's the best is the beer you can drink at the end of the route! Fresh Sapporo Beer in Sapporo itself! :)

For those who want to enjoy fresh crabs and lamb bbq , you can try it at the beer museum. Gengis Khan is Sapporo's speciality, which refers to bbq lamb! We tried it at one of the restaurants around the Susukino area and it was simply delicious!

If you still have time to kill, there is a mall right beside the museum which you can buy some last minute gifts before heading to the airport!

7 Days in Japan (Tokyo >> Osaka)

For 7 days in Japan, it will be a collation of some of the above-mentioned activities, to avoid repeating the same things, we will just list the attractions!

First, grab your JR pass for unlimited travel between cities on the JR line.

Day 1: Transfer from Airport to Hotel + Exploring Shinjuku

Day 2: Exploring Tokyo City (Tsukiji Fish Market - Sensoji Shrine - Meiji Shrine - Harajuku - Shibuya)

Day 3: Take a day trip to Hakone to see if you could catch the elusive Mount Fuji!

Day 4: Tokyo >> Osaka by Shinkansen (2h30mins) + Transfer to your Hotel + Explore Dotonburi

Day 5: Osaka >> Kyoto + Transfer to your Hotel + Explore Kyoto

Day 6: Explore Kyoto + Kyoto >> Nara + Nara Attractions + Nara >> Osaka

Day 7: Explore remaining Osaka attractions

14 Days in Japan (OSAKA >> Kyoto >> Tokyo >> Hakodate >> Sapporo)

Again, grab your JR pass for unlimited travel between cities on the JR line.

The Complete Guide to Getting Around in Sapporo

Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, is a large city. The odds are you will need to use Sapporo ‘s extensive transportation system to get from one tourist spot to another. This guide is a definitive look at all the ways you can travel around Sapporo.

The buses in Sapporo are, in our opinion, the easiest way to explore the city. While the subway is the most accessible, there are still a few attractions that can only be accessed via bus.

There are three companies operating in Sapporo: JR Hokkaido Bus , Hokkaido Chuo Bus , and Jotetsu Bus , and fares will vary depending on how far you travel.

All fares can be paid in cash or you can use an IC card such as PASMO , Suica , SAPICA, or Kitaca. Buses in Sapporo operate from approximately 06:30 to 23:30, although operational hours may change on weekends and public holidays.

Sapporo Subway

Sapporo’s subway system is the most convenient form of transportation in Sapporo since a lot of the subway stations are situated close to many sightseeing spots. Plus there’s the added benefit of being underground so the subway isn’t as affected by snow in the winter months compared to the above ground trains.

(Note: buses and taxis in Sapporo can also be affected by heavy snowstorms. Cycling is also not recommended in the winter months, although if you’re a brave soul and decide to cycle, please watch out for hidden ice patches under the snow!)

There are three lines: the Namboku Line (green), the Tozai Line (orange), and the Toho Line (blue). Major stations like Sapporo and Odori provide transfers to streetcars, bus terminals, and JR lines.

A one-way fare ranges between ¥ 200 and ¥ 380 for an adult and ¥ 100 and ¥ 190 for a child. All fares can be paid in cash or you can use an IC card such as PASMO, SAPICA, Kitaca, or Suica.

The subway is in operation from approximately 06:00 to 24:00 (midnight). Operating hours may be affected on weekends and public holidays.

The Sapporo streetcar/tram runs in a loop that serves the southwestern area of downtown Sapporo where there is limited subway service. While we’re on the topic of boarding locations: most are located in the middle of busy streets, so don’t forget to look both ways before you cross!

Streetcar tickets are a flat ¥ 200 for adults and ¥ 100 for children. All fares can be paid in cash or you can use an IC card such as PASMO, SAPICA, Kitaca, or Suica. The streetcar runs from approximately 06:00 to 23:00. Operational hours may change on weekends and public holidays.

There are two above ground train lines serving Sapporo. One runs west towards the coast and Otaru city and the other runs east towards Chitose Airport. While there are stops along these lines that bring you closer to attractions such as the Sapporo Beer Museum, Hokkaido University and Hokkaido’s Historical Village; unfortunately, both lines are really only useful if you’re traveling away from Sapporo.

All trains run through Sapporo station, the city’s main terminal. Local, limited express, and rapid trains arrive and depart from 10 platforms. All fares can be paid in cash or with one of the aforementioned IC cards. That said, the lines are operated by JR so any cheapos lucky enough to be visiting with a JR Pass will be able to use the lines, as well as the JR Hokkaido Highway Buses, without much hassle.

Services start around 06:00 and end around 23:00. Operating hours may change on weekends, public holidays, or if there’s been heavy snowfall.

Taxis in Sapporo

Like most cities in Japan, getting around by taxi in Sapporo can be expensive. However, if you want to get out of the weather or you just can’t be bothered lugging around your bags, a taxi can be a good option.

You can catch them either by hailing them on the street or catching one from a taxi stand. Most transport hubs and major points of interest have a taxi stand nearby.

The standard starting fare in the city is ¥ 670 , which will get you a distance of up to 1.46km. After that, you’ll be charged an extra ¥ 80 for every additional 276 meters traveled. If you’re thinking of catching a taxi from New Chitose Airport, that will set you back ¥ 15,000 to ¥ 20,000 , so you’re much better off hopping on a train or bus. Cycling in Sapporo

For the bicycle fans out there, Sapporo recently introduced a bicycle sharing scheme called Porocle . Cycling is not only cost-effective but it’s also a nice alternative to standing around waiting for the bus.

Pro tip: If you’re into cycling you should also check out this mountain bike tour from Sapporo . It includes everything, from round-trip transfers from Sapporo to bicycle and helmet rental, an English-speaking guide, lunch, and onsen entry fees.

What kind of bike can you rent? All of Porocle’s bicycles are electrically-assisted, which is great for the hilly inclines around Maruyama park. Plus, their bicycles come with the added benefit of insurance coverage so you can ride with peace of mind.

There are two ways to rent a bicycle through Porocle: registering as a member online or through an in-person application at a tourist office or an affiliated hotel.

There are no registration fees when signing up but you will need a credit card as well as a smartphone. There’s also a small charge of ¥ 550 (including postage) if you decide to purchase a dedicated IC card (used to unlock bikes). You don’t, however, need to purchase Porocle’s IC card, you can also use a regular IC card that you already own.

If you don’t carry a credit card, you can easily buy a day pass with cash from a tourist office, an affiliated hotel, or a convenience store. Some offices may also accept credit cards and e-money. A smart phone is still required, even for day passes, and they will hand you a dedicated IC card at the time of purchase.

Bear in mind that when renting a Porocle bike from a convenience store, some basic Japanese skills in reading and writing will be required as there is an application form to complete.

It’s important to note that in Japan children under the age of 13 years are required to wear a helmet. This year Porocle are renting helmets out for free in exchange for completing a questionnaire. Helmets are available for both adults and children so the whole family can ride together safely.

Porocle’s 2022 season is from April 9th to November 13th. Unfortunately, Porocle is not available during the winter months. The service is available 24 hours a day and day passes are valid from time of purchase until 23:59 the same day.

Weekend and One Day Travel Pass Deals

Travel passes are great for anyone looking to visit several sightseeing spots in one day. In Japan it’s common to pay for a one-way ticket every time you ride public transportation and, if you’re not careful, this can quickly eat away at your holiday funds.

There are 2 daily passes on offer: one for JR Hokkaido Bus and one for Hokkaido Chuo Bus. Both tickets allow unlimited travel (within the network) and are valid until the last bus of the day you intend to use the ticket.

The 1-Day JR Hokkaido bus pass is valid on local JR Hokkaido bus routes and can be purchased at JR Bus ticket centers and sales offices as well as on the bus. To use the pass, scratch off the date you intend to use it, then show it to the driver when disembarking.

The Hokkaido Chuo 1-Day bus fare is valid on all Hokkaido Chuo buses operating within Sapporo. It can be purchased on the bus (limited tickets available) or in Sapporo station from the ticket office. As with the JR Hokkaido Bus pass, scratch off the date you intend to use it, then show it to the driver when disembarking.

Note: the Chuo pass tickets explicitly state that it becomes invaild if there is more than one date scratched off. Bonus bus info: there is a ¥ 100 bus that operates between Sapporo station and Susukino. It’s managed by Jotetsu buses and only accepts cash payments.

If you plan on using the subway for a large portion of the day, then you might want to consider a 1-day pass which allows unlimited trips until the last train of the day. A 1-day pass costs ¥ 830 for an adult and ¥ 420 for a child.

There is a slightly cheaper “Donichika” 1-day pass for use on weekends and national holidays as well as over the New Year period (between December 29th and January 3rd). The pass costs ¥ 520 for adults and ¥ 260 for children.

Both passes can be bought through ticket machines found in the subway ticketing halls.

For cheapos looking to save a little bit of money, the 1-Day Dosanko Pass is the way to go.

The pass can be purchased for use on weekends and national holidays as well as the New Year Holiday (between December 29th and January 3rd). The pass costs ¥ 360 and is a combined ticket for one adult with one child (up to 12 years of age).

There are no special day passes for JR lines in Sapporo. Anyone with a JR Pass will be able to use the local JR lines as part of the deal.

Despite the lack of a day pass specific to Sapporo, travelers can make use the Hokkaido Rail Pass, Sapporo-Furano Area Pass, Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass, or the Hokkaido Free Pass.

Note that none of the JR passes (including the big-daddy JR Pass) cover the Sapporo streetcar network, or the Sapporo subway.

How to get 10% of your fare back

As we mentioned, IC cards can be used on transportation across Sapporo. However, Sapporo does have its own city smart card called SAPICA. This IC card is interesting because when you use a SAPICA you receive points equivalent to 10% of the fare. For example; if you spend ¥ 200 on a ticket, you receive 20 points. Neat, right?

SAPICA can also be used in selected drug stores and convenience stores around Sapporo (look out for the SAPICA logo in participating stores). At these stores you can earn 1 point for every ¥ 200 that you spend. Points will be automatically deducted for fare payment once you have accumulated enough points to cover the fare. Where can it be used? SAPICA can be used on Sapporo’s subway, streetcar, and bus. However, your card balance can not be used to purchase the one-day subway pass for weekends and holidays.

So, how much does it cost? The smart card will set you back ¥ 2 . However, ¥ 500 is the deposit while the other ¥ 1 can be used towards fares. If you decide to return the card, the deposit will be refunded.

The SAPICA card can be purchased from subway stations, bus terminals, and sales offices. The card can be charged at subway ticket machines, bus offices, and in some convenience stores.

How to Get to SAPPORO from TOKYO or OSAKA

The northernmost Japanese prefectural capital, Sapporo is a little bit harder to reach than other cities in the Land of the Rising Sun. Direct international flights are limited to a handful of countries, and the shinkansen reaches only as far as Hakodate in the southern tip of Hokkaido.

But no destination is far enough for a traveler determined to conquer a wonderland.

Sapporo is served by two airports, the Okadama Airport and the New Chitose Airport. Okadama Airport is used mostly for flights within Hokkaido.

If you’re flying to Sapporo directly from abroad, you will most likely land at the New Chitose Airport. There are direct flights coming from Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Honolulu, Guam, and sometimes Australia. Most visitors connect in another major city, often Tokyo or Osaka.

You may also travel by train to Sapporo from Osaka or Tokyo. However, it’s something that I don’t recommend, unless you have a JR Pass . It’s time-consuming. Even if you take the bullet train, you’ll still end up spending a day onboard. It’s also super expensive. I’ll explain below.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Tokyo to Sapporo by Plane

Estimated travel time from Tokyo to Sapporo by plane is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

You’ll find year-round flights that costs under USD 100 (PHP 5000). JetStar is one of them.

Tokyo to Sapporo by Train

• Take the Shinkansen Hayabusa to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station . Travel time: 4.5 hours. Reserved seat fee: ¥11,130 ($100, P5000).
• Switch to Limited Express Hokuto Line and alight at Sapporo Station. Travel time: 3 hours, 40 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥1550 ($14, P700); Unreserved seat ¥1290 ($11.5, P580).

One-way travel from Tokyo entails the following:

Total travel time: 8+ hours (excluding the layover time) Total fare: ¥14,140 (excluding the seat fees)

If you add the seat reservation fees for the two legs to the fares, the whole journey would cost you around ¥26,820 ($240, P12,000). That’s just one way!

Osaka to Sapporo by Plane

Flights from Osaka takes around 2 hours. Fares are just a bit pricier.

Osaka to Sapporo by Train

To get to Sapporo from Osaka, you will need to make a transfer in Tokyo.

• From Shin-Osaka Station (not to be confused with Osaka Station), take the Shinkansen Nozomi to Tokyo Station . Travel time: 2 hours, 33 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥5700 ($51, P2550); Unreserved seat fee: ¥4870 ($44, P2180).
• Switch to Limited Express Hokuto Line and alight at Sapporo Station . Travel time: 3 hours, 40 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥1550 ($14, P700); Unreserved seat ¥1290 ($11.5, P580).

Total travel time (excluding layovers): 10.5+ hours Total fare (3 legs): ¥18,140

If you add the seat fees, the total cost of the journey from Osaka to Sapporo is at ¥36,520 ($326, P16,400).

That’s why we don’t recommend taking the train. You’ll reach Sapporo by plane much faster at half the price.

But if you’re visiting multiple cities, then you will get great savings if you just book a JR Pass. This makes sense if you want to explore not just one or two cities. For example, if your itinerary includes Osaka, Tokyo, and Sapporo in 7 days.

Also, riding the bullet train across the Japanese countryside is quite an experience too, so that’s something to consider.

My husband and I are planning to travel around Japan this May for 16-18 days. Since it’s our first time, everyone is recommending only the Golden triangle. But from whatever little research I did, it seems interesting to explore the alpine route too. Would you recommend us to do that? If yes, how do you think we should plan our entry and exit into Japan e.g. Tokyo- Alpine route- Kyoto- Osaka our landing in Osaka working towards the north or stick to Tokyo to Tokyo and then move around internally. We would be using a lot of public transport but quite willing to explore. Kindly help us plan. Thanks, Best regards,

I think it’s possible to do Tokyo – Alpine Route – Kyoto – Osaka in 16-18 days. I think it’s doable. I haven’t tried it though, so I can’t be of much help. It was my blogging partner Vins who covered Alpine Route for this blog so medyo chop chop.

But yes, I think it’s doable. And yes, it’s better to start in Tokyo and end in Osaka (or vice versa) instead of having the same entry and exit point.

Sapporo travel guide: Access and how to get there

Sapporo is the fifth largest city in Japan and capital of the northern island of Hokkaido. In less than two centuries, Sapporo has enjoyed rapid growth from a settlement of only seven individuals to a thriving metropolis.

In the language of the Ainu people, indigenous inhabitants of northern Japan, the word Sapporo means “an important river flowing through a plain.” Today, however, Sapporo is known for much more than its river. In 1972, this city hosted the Olympic Winter Games. A snow festival is held yearly, and Sapporo is also famous for its ramen and beer.

How to get to Sapporo by train

Travel to Sapporo by train is fully covered by the  Japan Rail Pass . This is an affordable option with the added bonus of views of much of the Japanese countryside.

Tokyo to Sapporo

From Tokyo Station, take the JR Tohoku / Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate Station. This is the halfway mark of the nearly eight-hour journey. You may want to consider a stopover in nearby Hokuto , as there are a number of temples, shrines, and other places of interest in the area, including a mountainous campground.

From Shin-Hakodate Station, you will take the Hokuto limited express or Super Hokuto trains to Sapporo Station.  Both are covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

Flights are also available from Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports to the Shin-Chitose Airport in Sapporo. Flight time is around 90 minutes. If you decide to take a flight, we suggest you first check the flight discounts available for tourists!

Kyoto to Sapporo

The journey by train from Kyoto to Sapporo takes around 11 hours. From Kyoto Station, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Tokyo Station. Then, proceed from Tokyo Station as described above. This is a great use of your JR Pass, as a one-week pass costs several thousand yen less than would the individual train fares.

Osaka to Sapporo

From Osaka, to begin your journey, take the Hikari train from Shin-Osaka Station to Tokyo Station. Then, proceed to Sapporo from Tokyo as described above.

Alternatively, you may prefer the two-hour flight between Osaka and Sapporo. The Kobe, Kansai, and Itami airports all operate flights to Sapporo’s Shin-Chitose Airport.

Getting around Sapporo

Sapporo is unique in its rectangular street system, based on the North American style. It is among the simplest of Japanese cities for tourists to navigate, using its block system of compass directions and numbers.

This system will aid you in getting to where you wish to go using Sapporo’s efficient public transportation methods.

Your JR Pass is valid on the JR Buses in Hokkaido. Three local subway lines and a tram line are also available. The three lines all connect with JR Sapporo Station .

Things to do in Sapporo

As soon as you step off of your train, you will be greeted by all that Sapporo has to offer. The station itself hosts the T38 Observation Deck , and is surrounded by shopping centers and unique restaurants, such as the Sapporo Ramen Republic.

Sapporo is known for its snow and winter sports , and if traveling there in February, you are in for a special treat. The week-long Sapporo Yuki Matsuri , or Sapporo Snow Festival , features snow and ice sculptures and attracts more than two million visitors annually. This event arose from small beginnings in 1950, when high school students built snow statues in Odori Park . The 2019 festival is scheduled for January 31 to February 11.

Odori is not the only park worth a visit in Sapporo. In the center of Sapporo, you will find the Botanic Garden , which preserves part of the area’s original forest. Moerenuma Park on the city’s outskirts is a former landfill transformed by Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Features of the park include two manmade mountains, a glass pyramid, and fountain shows.

History buffs will enjoy the Historic Village of Hokkaido, an open-air museum , as well as the Hokkaido Museum, which includes displays on the Ainu culture and local wildlife. The Clock Tower, or Tokeidai , was constructed in 1878 as part of a college and now serves as a museum. The clock itself was imported from Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. in 1881.

When your inner foodie gets hungry, check out the Shirio Koibito Park, a chocolate theme park in which visitors can tour a factory and museum as well as make their own sweet treats. Or, you may consider the Sapporo Beer Museum, celebrating Hokkaido as the “birthplace” of Japanese beer. In addition to a museum, tastings are available.

If you would like to make an excursion from the city during your stay in Sapporo, consider the Sapporo Teine Ski Resort , just 40 minutes away from city center. The Olympic torch, as well as two Olympic ski runs, make this a unique place to hit the slopes.

From Sapporo we recommend you to go to Niseko ski resort . The JR Hakodate line can get you from Sapporo to Niseko in roughly an hour, or if you come from Tokyo, you can take the Tohoku Shinkansen, then the JR Hokuto line, and then connect with the Hakodate line. Quick enough to get you on the slopes and start shredding on a snow packed mountain.

Getting around Sapporo

Orientation–Where is Sapporo?

Sapporo is located on the southwestern coast of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island.

This capital city serves as Japan’s fifth-largest city and is known internationally for its annual Sapporo Snow Festival, verdant parks, art museums, Sapporo TV Tower, and beer industry! Foodies will also love the city’s signature ramen, seafood, and fresh Hokkaido ice cream.

Getting to Sapporo

The most common way to fly into Sapporo is on a domestic flight from Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, or Fukuoka to New Chitose Airport , located just southeast of Sapporo. This regional airport is an international and domestic travel hub known for its entertaining shops and activities.

Common flight routes and travel times include:

• Haneda Airport (Tokyo) to New Chitose: 90m
• Narita Airport (Tokyo) to New Chitose: 1h and 50m
• Osaka International (Itami) Airport to New Chitose: 1h and 45m
• Osaka Kansai International Airport to New Chitose: 2h
• Chubu Centrair International Airport (Nagoya) to New Chitose: 1h and 45m
• Fukuoka Airport to New Chitose: 2h and 20m

Currently, there are no flights due to Covid, but before Covid, Finnair (Finland) and Qantas (Sydney) flew to Shin-Chitose, and at present Finnair has announced that they will resume flights from July this year, so we believe access from Europe and Australia will become more common here once they resume flights.

International flights mostly originate from across Asia (e.g. South Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Singapore & Australia), with some others from further destinations, like Hawaii or Finland (Actual results in January 2020. As of January 2022, international flights are not operated due to the influence of the new coronavirus, so please be careful.). Domestic flights originate from all over Japan. The Tokyo—New Chitose route is one of the busiest in the world (9.7mill passengers carried in 2018), with up to 80 flights during normal conditions.

New Chitose Airport is well connected to Sapporo via airport buses and rapid JR trains; multiple buses and trains run every hour. Bus rides (1,100 yen) to Sapporo take about 70-90 minutes depending on the destination, and rapid JR trains (1,150 yen), which connect directly to Sapporo Station, take about 40 minutes.

While airway travel is the most time-efficient way to reach Sapporo, you can also travel by train via the Hokkaido Shinkansen Line, which uses the underwater Seikan Tunnel. From Tokyo Station, take a Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station near Hakodate (4-hour ride). Then, transfer to the Ltd Express Super Hokuto train bound for Sapporo Station (3.5-hour ride). Please note that Hayabusa trains require seat reservations beforehand. This route is covered by both the JR Pass and JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass.

If you are traveling to Sapporo using a private car, you may want to opt for a leisurely ferry ride. Ferries depart from a number of locations in Honshu, including Maizuru, Tsuruga, Niigata, Nagoya, Oarai, and Hachinohe, and generally take around 20 hours, with farther locations taking up to 40 hours. These ferries connect to Otaru Ferry Terminal and Tomakomai West and East Port Terminals, which are about a 1-hour car ride to Sapporo.

Access from Sapporo to Hokkaido’s Cities

Sapporo Station serves as the central hub of Sapporo and is a common starting point for travel outside of the city. Hokkaido’s train system effectively connects the local Sapporo area with other regional cities in an efficient manner.

The below popular routes are all covered by the JR Pass.

• Sapporo to Otaru: 30-50 minutes, rapid or local trains on the JR Hakodate Main Line
• Sapporo to Asahikawa: 1 hour and 40 minutes, Okhotsk limited express train
• Sapporo to Niseko: 2 hours to Kutchan station via the Rapid Niseko Liner. Then take a bus or taxi to Niseko (15-45 minutes depending on the resort destination)
• Sapporo to Obihiro: 2 hours and 40 minutes, Tokachi or Ozora limited express trains
• Sapporo to Hakodate: 3.5 hours, Super Hokuto limited express train
• Sapporo to Kushiro: 4 hours and 30 minutes, Ozora limited express train

Similar to Hokkaido’s trains, its buses provide reliable and economical transportation to major cities in the region. The prefecture’s intercity bus system is centered in Sapporo with wide-spread reaches to popular destinations such as Niseko, Furano, Hakodate, Asahikawa, Otaru, Shiretoko, and more. Travel times vary greatly from 1 hour to nearby Otaru to over 7 hours to Shiretoko. Please note that some bus routes require reservations while others do not.

If you are planning on frequently utilizing the bus system during your stay, we recommend looking into the Hokkaido Inter City Bus Pass (ICBP) or Hokkaido Budget Bus Pass (HBBP). Details are listed in the Transport Passes section. The JR Pass also covers local JR buses in the Hokkaido area.

Getting Around Sapporo

Sapporo is one of Japan’s easiest cities to navigate thanks to its rectangular street design and intuitive addressing system, which labels locations based on their compass directions and the number of city blocks. For travel within the city, you will most often rely on subways, trams, buses, and taxis.

The Sapporo Municipal Subway is a convenient way to travel around the city. The mostly underground subway consists of three lines, Namboku, Tozai, and Toho, all of which meet at Odori station. The subways are also connected to the city’s railways and buses, providing easy transfers to both. You can purchase subway tickets at automatic ticket machines located at all subway stations.

If you plan to use the subway multiple times in one day, purchase a One Day or Donichika Ticket. Details are in the Transport Passes section.

Sapporo is one of the only cities in Hokkaido, the other being Hakodate, that has a tram, or streetcar, network. These brightly colored, sometimes vintage, and sometimes modern-looking trams are a fun way to get around the city, and, with their frequent running times, you do not have to worry too much about planning ahead. Just hop on and enjoy the ride!

The tram network in Sapporo, called Sapporo Streetcar, travels in a loop in the center of the city and many run every hour. The streetcars operate from 6:00 to around 23:00 and provide easy transportation to 24 stops, as well as connections with the subways. The entire loop takes a little under an hour and is an excellent way to explore central Sapporo. A single ride on the tram costs 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for children. If you plan on utilizing the streetcar multiple times a day, consider purchasing the One-Day Streetcar Pass or Dosanko Pass. Details are listed in the Transport Passes section.

Please note that the streetcars become crowded during peak travel times.

Sapporo’s local bus network is centered on bus stations in and around Sapporo Station and run by three main bus companies–Hokkaido Chuo Bus, JR Hokkaido Bus, and Jotetsu Bus. These buses have multiple terminals throughout the city, connect directly to subway stations for seamless transfers, and provide transportation to further destinations not accessible by subway or tram. Bus fares in central Sapporo generally cost about 210 yen for adults and 110 yen for children. You can pay bus fares with cash or SAPICA, Kitaca, or other IC cards.

Other useful Sapporo bus services are Jotetsu’s 100 yen bus that runs between Sapporo Station and Susukino and Chuo’s Sapporo Walk Bus that runs from Sapporo Station to Sapporo Beer Museum and stops at several tourist locations in between. One-day bus passes for the Sapporo Walk Bus cost 750 yen for adults and 380 yen for children.

Taxis are a convenient way to travel around the city if you are carrying a lot of baggage or are looking for a less time-sensitive option. Taxis tend to congregate around Sapporo Station, department stores, hotels, and tourist attractions and come in three sizes: small, medium, and large. Taxi fares depend on the size of the car, the distance, and the time of day. Most taxi drivers do not speak English, so be sure to have your destination’s address in Japanese. Please note that you should not tip your taxi driver, as it is not customary in Japan, and you should confirm that the taxi accepts cash or credit, depending on your payment method, before departing.

Transport Passes

Below are a number of economically priced passes that help streamline your travels by eliminating the hassle of purchasing multiple tickets. Please note that the pricing below is up-to-date as of 2022.

JAL Japan Explorer Pass : This pass offers a fixed fee for domestic airway travel to over 30 cities in Japan. Fare prices range from 5,500 to 11,000 yen.

JR Hokkaido Rail Pass : This pass allows holders to ride all JR Hokkaido trains, except Hokkaido Shinkansen, and some JR buses. You can purchase 5- or 7-day plans, which cost 19,000/9,500 yen and 25,000/12,500 yen respectively for adults/children if you purchase it outside of Japan.

JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass : This pass offers unlimited train rides on valid routes in East Japan and Hokkaido for 6 days, including the Hokkaido Shinkansen, JR Hokkaido lines, and select JR lines from Tokyo to Hokkaido. The pass costs 27,000 yen for adults and 13,500 for children.

JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass : This pass offers unlimited train rides on valid routes in Tohoku and Hokkaido for 6 days, including the Hokkaido Shinkansen, JR Hokkaido lines, and select JR lines from Aizu to Aomori. The pass costs 24,000 yen for adults and 12,000 for children.

Japan Rail Pass : This pass allows holders to travel throughout Japan via eligible trains, buses, and ferries with Green Car and Standard Car options. You can purchase 7, 14, and 21 day passes, which range in price from about 29,650/14,820 yen to 83,390/41,690 yen for adults/children.

One Day Ticket : This ticket offers unlimited rides on the subway for a flat rate of 830 yen for adults and 420 yen for children.

Donichika Ticket : This discounted one-day pass is available on weekends and holidays and costs 520 yen for adults and 260 yen for children.

Hokkaido Inter City Bus Pass (ICBP) : The ICBP allows users to take any bus in central Hokkaido without reservations. For adults/children, the pass costs 6,000/3,000 yen (3 days) or 9,000/4,500 yen (5 days).

Hokkaido Budget Bus Pass (HBBP) : The HBBP works similar to the ICBP (above), except that it includes long-distance bus routes as well. Adult/child pricing for HBBP is 11,000/5,500 yen (3 days) or 17,000/8,500 yen (5 days).

Please note that sales for both passes are currently suspended as of May 1, 2020 due to Covid-19 .

One-Day Streetcar Pass : This pass offers users unlimited rides on the Sapporo Streetcar for one day at a fixed rate. The pass costs 500 yen for adults and 250 yen for children.

Dosanko Pass : This pass offers one adult and one child unlimited rides on the Sapporo Streetcar for one day on weekends and holidays. The pass costs 370 yen.

SAPICA : This prepaid and rechargeable IC card can be used for subways, buses, streetcars, and even select shops in the Sapporo area. You can purchase the card at subway ticket machines and subway and bus ticket offices. The card initially costs 2,000 yen, which includes a deposit of 500 yen that will be refunded upon cancellation and an available balance of 1,500 yen. You can recharge this card at subway ticket machines and charging stations, subway and bus sales offices, and select stores.

Kitaca : This IC card, provided by JR Hokkaido, can be used for trains, subways, buses, streetcars, and select shops in the greater Sapporo area, as well as nationwide at marked IC stations. Similar to the SAPICA card, Kitaca costs 2,000 yen, which includes a 500 yen refundable deposit and an available balance of 1,500 yen.

You can also use the following IC cards for Sapporo’s subway, buses, and trams: Suica, PASMO, manaca, TOICA, PiTaPa, ICOCA, Hayakaken, nimoca, and SUGOCA.

Travel to up to the mountainous Hida region of Gifu prefecture and stop in Takayama. At the heart of the city is Old Town Takayama, a well-preserved time capsule of the medieval Edo period. Three narrow streets known as the Sanmachi Suji are lined with old-fashioned shops, houses, and restaurants elegantly built in traditional style. Perhaps the finest example is the old government office, Takayama Jinya – at one time Japan’s largest rice storehouse. The best time to visit Takayama is in the spring or autumn seasons, when the city is known for a special festival known for incredible floats.

Discover Hiroshima, the chief city of Japan’s Chugoku region. After World War 2, Hiroshima was determined to rise from the ashes of nuclear destruction and establish itself as a city of peace. The central fixture of the city is the Peace Memorial Park. The park features sweeping lawns with a number of stirring monuments, including the A-Bomb Dome, The Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims, even a museum that tells their stories. Other monuments of old Hiroshima have been carefully rebuilt to remember the city’s ancient history, including Hiroshima Castle and nearby Shukkeien landscape garden.

Nagasaki is unenviably known as the second of two cities to have suffered nuclear devastation. Although there is a Peace Park there much like Hiroshima’s, complete with a magnificent statue at the center, only visiting these kinds of monuments is much like reading only half of the city’s captivating story. Make time to enjoy the stately elegance of Glover Garden, the sacred atmosphere of Oura Church with the 26 Martyrs Monument, and the historic Dutch houses full of classical Western style in the old Dejima district while touring Nagasaki.

Nara was the first permanent capital city Japan ever had, and much of the city has a real old-time feel to it. But the reason you should visit, the reason Nara is beloved as a destination, is the thousands of adorable Sika deer wandering around Nara Deer Park and nearby Todaiji Temple. These cute creatures are protected by Nara as a sacred guardian of the city, and though wild most of them are surprisingly friendly to strangers, even bowing to receive one of the special deer crackers sold at stalls around the park. Todaiji Temple is also worth exploring. The Great Eastern Temple is a grand sight to behold, and houses one of Japan’s largest Buddha statues.

Fill your vacation with views of Japan’s natural splendor in Hakone, a breathtaking location on the Izu Peninsula. The entire region lies within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and is filled with a variety of picture-perfect nature scenes. One of the best places to take in the sights is on a cruise over Lake Ashi, which features a splendid panorama of greenery-covered mountains by the lakeside town of Hakone. For a view that can only be described as spectacular, soar overhead from a gondola on the Hakone Ropeway, which, if the weather is favorable, offers awe-inspiring views of Mount Fuji. The ropeway descends into Owakudani, a mysterious volcanic caldera wreathed in sulfur and smoke, where you can taste the local specialty: eggs that have been hard boiled in a volcanic pool.

Take a spiritual retreat into Wakayama prefecture as you visit Mount Koya, to behold one of Japan’s most sacred mountain temples. The center of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, Mt. Koya (or “Koyasan”) features some truly magnificent temple sites that make you feel perfectly cut off from the world and its worries. Plan an overnight stay in a temple for an opportunity to truly experience life as a Buddhist monk. Visitors dine on healthy vegetarian monks’ food, enjoy a tour of Okunoin, the fascinating mausoleum of Shingon Buddhism’s founder, Kobo Daishi, and awake the next morning to attend morning prayers with the monks.

Naoshima is a small island that is a resort getaway for lovers of modern art. Naoshima is also called “Art Island” for its many museums and architectural wonders. Many of the museums including Bennesse House Museum, Chichu Art Museum and Lee Ufan Museum were stylishly designed by acclaimed Japanese architect Tadao Ando. These museums house a wide variety of works from various Japanese and international artists, including paintings, sculptures, and other art pieces – some of them take entire rooms to display! Much of the island is designed around a theme of coexistence with nature. Be sure to admire the two giant pumpkins – artworks for which Naoshima is famous.

Kanazawa is filled with many of the historical trappings befitting an old castle town, but the city’s treasure is undoubtedly Kenrokuen Garden. Hailed as the chief of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, Kenrokuen is the perfect place for a nice long stroll, where visitors can admire the various flowers, trees and ponds, with scattered teahouses and other traditional structures. Spring and autumn are the most beautiful, resplendent in either cherry blossoms or fall colors. Kanazawa offers plenty of other cultural opportunities to enjoy as well, with both an old-fashioned samurai district called Nagamachi, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art.

Himeji is a beautiful city surrounded by sea and mountains in Hyogo prefecture, boasting one of Japan’s most iconic national treasures. The most prominent feature of the city is Japan’s most enduring and preeminent feudal fortress, Himeji Castle. The castle keep was constructed in the early 1600s by legendary samurai general Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which has survived in its original form to this day. Himeji is called “White Heron Castle” for its glistening white exterior and walls that seem to spread from the central tower like wings. Next to the castle is Kokoen, a fairly new landscape garden constructed to commemorate the anniversary of Himeji Castle, featuring 9 separate gardens depicting different Edo-era garden styles.

Sapporo is that largest city in Hokkaido prefecture, and it is by far the top place to be during winter in Japan. While Hokkaido is celebrated as Japan’s winter playground, going in February during the Sapporo Snow Festival is a definite must. Massive creations built entirely of snow and ice depict famous landmarks and larger-than-life characters. These can be seen at locations across the city, including Susukino – Sapporo’s brightly lit entertainment district, the best place in town to grab a bite to eat. In the heart of the city sits Odori park, an expansive strip of greenery stretching over 12 city blocks – the perfect spot to take a breather while exploring Sapporo.

Osaka: The laid back brother to Tokyo

Osaka, oh man, what a city! It's like a burst of energy and flavor all wrapped into one awesome package. This place has got some serious street cred, especially when it comes to food.
