Travel Gear Review: Osprey Farpoint 70 Backpack

Katie Genter

I'm a digital nomad — so my luggage is my home. After one fateful trip dragging a rolling suitcase around Turkey, I quickly learned that rolling suitcases don't fit my travel style. I've tried many duffle bags and backpacks since, but rejected each for various reasons and have been using the Osprey Farpoint 70 for the last eight months. Here's my take on this popular travel backpack.

The Osprey Farpoint comes in four capacities: 40 liters, 55 liters, 70 liters and 80 liters. The 55- and 70-liter versions are similar and consist of a paired backpack and a day pack, while the 40- and 80-liter versions consist of just a backpack. I've been using the Farpoint 70, so this will focus on that version.

The Osprey Farpoint 70

The Farpoint 70 is priced at $200 and comes in two colors: Jasper Red and Volcanic Gray. There are two sizes to choose from: S/M for torso heights of 15 to 19 inches and M/L for torso heights of 18 to 22 inches. I can compare both, since I have the S/M and my husband JT has the M/L. Both backpacks are lightweight, with the S/M weighing three pounds 12 ounces and the M/L weighing three pounds 15 ounces.

The S/M backpack measures 24 inches by 13 inches by 13 inches, while the M/L measures 26 inches by 14 inches by 13 inches. The two extra inches in height on the M/L make a difference, as the S/M will usually fit straight into a standard overhead compartment, while the M/L often needs to be angled to fit. Although the depth can be decreased by packing less, the height and width are set due to the backpack's internal frame.

The Farpoint 70 is made with 210-denier ripstop nylon and 600-denier packcloth. It's durable and backed up by Osprey's generous "All Mighty Guarantee." Under this guarantee, Osprey will repair — or replace if a repair isn't possible — any damage or defect for any reason free of charge for the life of the bag. I've taken advantage of this guarantee on a different bag and found the repair to be quick and high-quality. The only cost was shipping it to Osprey.

The backpack has one lockable heavy-duty zipper that zips 3/4 of the way around the backpack. This effectively opens the backpack like a suitcase.

The main backpack without the day pack attached.

Although the zipper top has a large mesh pocket, there is only one large 53 (S/M) or 55 (M/L) liter compartment. I've found that packing cubes help with organizing items in this large compartment. There are also two internal compression straps that help keep everything in place.

A look inside the main backpack.

The main pack has two hardy carry handles, one on the top and one on the side. There are also loops for attaching a sleeping pad or other rolled items — yoga mats seem to be a popular accessory for others with the bag — to the outside of the pack, but I removed these as I didn't find them useful.

One significant way in which the Farpoint excels over many of its competitors — including other Osprey products such as the Ozone and Porter families — is in its carry system. The carry system is composed of the hip belt and harness. Most travel backpacks have hip belts and harnesses, but the Farpoint has a wide, effective hip belt that's able to move most of the backpack's weight from your shoulders to your hips. Plus, the harness includes an adjustable chest strap and load-lifter straps so the pack's fit can be customized.

The hip belt and harness stow away behind a zippered panel when needed. This is great for protecting the carry system when the bag is checked-in for a flight. Although the carry system isn't up to the quality of Osprey's overnight hiking backpacks, it's the best I've seen on a travel backpack.

The harness and hip belt can be zipped away.

The Details

The day pack is a mere 15 liters. The largest pocket has lockable zippers, as well as a padded 15-inch laptop sleeve and a smaller tablet sleeve. There's enough room to put a jacket or change of clothing in this pocket as well.

The day pack is pretty basic.

There's a smaller pocket on the front of the backpack. This pocket is large enough for sunglasses or a cell phone. There's also a clip in this pocket for securing a key ring. The only other pockets on the day pack are two water bottle pockets on the front of the bag. Tall water bottles fall out easily and the pockets become useless when the bag is full.

The harness on the backpack is comfortable, as the straps are padded and there's an adjustable chest strap. The chest strap has a safety whistle. There's no waist strap to help with heavier packs or running to catch a flight.

Carry Options

While wearing the main backpack on your back, there are two recommended ways to carry the companion day pack.

The first option is to zip and then clip the day pack onto the backpack. Although this leaves your arms empty, it means nothing is within reach. This also makes your backpack very big and — in my experience — moves your center of mass noticeably further back when carrying electronics in the day pack.

The day pack zips and then clips on to the main backpack.

The second option — which was a large selling point for me — is to 'turtle' the backpack. There are clips on the backpack and day pack that allow the day pack to hang from the backpack in front of you. Once you've done it a few times, clipping and unclipping the bag is easy — and having your day pack in front evens out the weight and keeps your valuables right in front of you.

A close up look at how the day pack attaches to the main backpack.

The Road Test

I've been carrying my S/M Farpoint 70 around the world for the last eight months. The backpack has held up well despite being checked on about 80 flights — the only notable wear is slight fraying on the external compression straps and a tiny hole near the bottom of the bag. The photos throughout this article are after 8 months of use.

Admittedly, I abandoned the day pack and replaced it with a larger, better organized day pack. Although I rarely fill the larger day pack, the 15-liter day pack is simply too small and has too few pockets to hold and organize the electronics, jacket, water bottle and other items I want to carry on board flights. Unfortunately, this larger day pack isn't a companion to the Farpoint, so it can't be turtled or zipped onto the main Farpoint pack.

I settled into how I pack the main backpack and quickly became accustomed to having just one large compartment. I got the bag's carry system customized just right, so it was comfortable to carry even for longer distances. The comfortable carry system and how easily the harness and hip belt stow away are my favorite parts of the Farpoint 70.

The Takeaway

The Farpoint 70 has a lot going for it. It's lightweight yet durable and Osprey will repair it "no matter what." The hip belt effectively moves most weight from your shoulders to your hips. Plus, although it's technically too large to be a carry-on, I've never had issues bringing it on-board. However, the day pack is simply too small, doesn't have enough pockets and lacks a usable water bottle storage area.

The day pack hangs comfortably when "turtled" to the main backpack.

Although I ditched the partner day pack, the Osprey Farpoint 70 is still the best fit for me in terms of comfort, capacity and durability.

If you're looking to buy an Osprey Farpoint for yourself, I recommend going to REI Co-op to try on different sizes. I bought my Farpoint 70 backpack from REI since it has a 100% satisfaction guarantee under which you can return any item within a year and get a full refund.

Don't forget to use a credit card that has price protection . Although I bought my backpack through REI, I was able to price match it to an online retailer which was selling the pack for just $122 — a savings of $78 off the retail price while still getting the benefits of REI's guarantee.

Osprey Farpoint 70 Backpack Review

The Farpoint 70 is one of the most popular Osprey travel backpacks chosen by backpackers, digital nomads and trekkers across the globe.

With a combined 70-litre capacity and weighing in at 2.5kg, the Farpoint 70 isn’t exactly the smallest of backpacks. However, if you’re looking for something of this size, a compact bag isn’t going to be a priority.

Outside the backpack

The rucksack is a tale of two halves (or rather two bags) as the Osprey Farpoint 70 backpack combines a large 55-litre hold-all style backpack with the smaller 15-litre Farpoint Day.

We’ll start things off with the main pack and immediately you’ll spot a smooth-looking, harness-less pack. That’s because they’re in hiding, behind a handy harness shield, perfect for avoiding strap snags in airport carousels or when opting to carry the bag as the neat duffle it can be.

The harness is good and sturdy but does lack a little on the cushioning front. It can, however, be paired with a typical sternum and waist strap for optimum support and this does help massively when taking the pack long distances. A pair of soft and meaty grab handles, one at the top and one at the side, let you throw this thing around exactly how you’d like to.

The Farpoint Day is exactly what you’d expect from a compact daypack with a single main compartment, top stash and two netted pockets designed for water bottles. The pack offers a pair of decent shoulder straps and an additional sternum strap, keeping everything nice and tight. A small grab handle is useful for throwing the pack into overhead lockers or hanging up your valuables in a capsule hotel.

The party piece of the Farpoint 70 is that Farpoint Day can be quickly and easily joined with a combination of a perimeter zip and a pair of compression straps, functioning in a ‘piggy-back’ fashion. Alternatively, the daypack can clip onto the harness of the main pack, keeping any valuables stashed in the Farpoint Day on the front in a ‘kangaroo’ style.

This makes it easy to carry large amounts of weight in both bags with a single pair of shoulder straps whether trekking up a mountain, hiking to the hostel or just heading through the airport.

Inside the backpack

It’s what’s inside that counts and when you’ve got a whole 70 litres to play with, that translates to a fair old chunk of stuff.

The 70L pack is a tale of two halves – a 55L main pack and a 15L daypack with the larger of the two designed with compression straps to maximise the space on offer. There’s plenty of space for sleeping bags , clothes and other travel essentials. The smaller section features a zip-secured mesh pocket, ideal for separating dirty laundry. Additionally, a small ID section can be found inside the harness store, although we always recommend additional tags if possible.

The daypack is designed with essentials in mind and with just 15 litres to play with, you’ll have to be selective with what you’re packing on day trips. A laptop sleeve designed to fit 15” sits inside the main compartment with an additional padded zip pocket perfect for documents or slim electronics. A top stash section is great for keeping electronics or sunglasses and a key hook prevents any locking mishaps.

Material and durability

The material used on the bag is the bluesign® approved 450D recycled twist dobby polyester, which basically means that it’s tough – really tough.

There are three different colours available to backpackers with Black, Tunnel Vision Grey and a handsome Muted Space Blue. Overall, we think that backpack is a good-looking addition to anyone’s spine, although things do look a little clumsy when the two are paired in either kangaroo or piggyback configurations.

Testing the backpack

The additional Osprey laptop backpack, or daypack, is a fantastic solution to the age-old duel bag problem, although we’re not convinced the final form has been reached.

When combining the two together, I often felt clumsy and as the bag occupies so much space on the back I found myself often off-balance, no matter how the rucksack was packed. Ultimately, I typically chose to use these backpacks separately, carrying the larger on the shoulders and the smaller by the grab handle when moving long distances.

Overall verdict

Overall, over 5 months of continuous use, both the Farpoint 70 made for a fantastic travel companion. Both were treated with utter disrespect throughout South East Asia and both have stood the test of time with absolutely no rips, tears or marks that weren’t intentional.

The Osprey Farpoint 70 is a fantastic beginner travel backpack, packed with clever features and complete with enough space to bring the family dog, it’ll be a challenge not to. If you want a cost-effective and space-effective solution to backpacking, Osprey will look after you!

Although it’s typically difficult to pitch two packs against one another, we can safely argue for the Farpoint 70 thanks to it’s smaller size and additional 15L detachable daypack.

This pack weighs a total of just 2.5kg thanks to some clever material development from the brand.

Absolutely. I couldn’t have chosen a better backpack for my first time travelling than the Farpoint 70, which we would highly recommend for beginner backpackers.

Review: Osprey Farpoint 70 Backpack

A High-Quality Backpack For All Kinds of Travelers.

osprey farpoint 70l travel bag

After three years of travel, I'd become less about being a minimalist and more about carrying home comforts. While packing light is still a rule I think the majority of travelers should live by, I no longer wanted to pack as light as I had been. Out went my beloved Osprey Exos 46, and in came an Osprey Farpoint 70 instead.

Why the Osprey Farpoint 70 Backpack?

I prefer Osprey backpacks because of their lifetime guarantee. They’ll repair or replace any backpack of theirs that breaks, even if you bought it 20 years ago!

While that might not be too much use if a strap falls off while you’re backpacking in Mongolia, it shows me the company has faith in their products. After my Osprey Exos lasted me three years before the baggage handlers at PDX airport destroyed it, I was looking for something by the same company.

I decided on the Farpoint range because I was looking for a front-loading backpack instead of a top-loading one. Front-loading backpacks typically allow you to padlock your bags shut for greater security, and make packing and unpacking much easier.

I opted for the Farpoint 70 over the 55 liter option – with the main backpack having a 55 liter capacity and detachable daypack adding an extra 15, I could keep the daypack empty most of the time but fill it up when I needed to.

Real-World Testing

I found the Farpoint 70 to be a great choice – even more so than my previous backpack. It’s comfortable, robust, and has lots of nifty features for travelers of all shapes and sizes.

One particular feature I've grown fond of is being able to unzip the daypack and clip it to the straps of the main pack, allowing it to hang from the front without needing to carry it. It helps balance the load so I'm unlikely to topple over, and means all my important documents are within easy reach in my daypack.

Most importantly, it’s comfortable when wearing for several hours at a time. The shoulder and hip straps are well-padded so they don’t cut into my skin, which is great for the times I'm wandering around an unfamiliar city in search of a hostel.

Having a detachable daypack included is helpful. It can be quickly unzipped to use as hand luggage at the airport, or while exploring a new city with the main backpack left behind in my room.

Having a separate mesh section in the main backpack helps keep the pack organized – I use mine to keep dirty washing away from clean clothes.

I had the opportunity to test out the international warranty service first-hand, when my backpack arrived on the luggage belt with a large rip in the side coming off a domestic flight in Thailand. I patched it up with duct tape for a few weeks, then contacted the Australian Osprey distributor to find out about warranty options when I arrived in Melbourne.

Within a few days, a local agent had repaired the damage, and I had a fully-functional backpack again, at no cost to me. Now that's good service!

I've now owned the pack for two years, and traveled around the world with it. It's still going strong, with no visible signs of wear or damage. I can't ask more than that.

Any Downsides?

If you do decide to keep the daypack attached to the backpack and fill both to the brim, you’ll find the combination sticks out so you look like a giant turtle. Not only that, but the small length and large depth is likely to leave you unbalanced as you walk.

Finally, its awkward shape can make it hard to fit the pack into luggage areas on trains and buses when stuff full. This backpack is definitely at its best when at less than three-quarters capacity. Any more than that makes it unwieldy, although still fine in a pinch.

Final Thoughts

The Osprey Farpoint 70 is a high-quality backpack that will suit all kinds of travelers. It’s not the cheapest backpack on the market, but its robustness and lifetime guarantee mean you’ll be using it for years to come. I think it’s a great option. Recommended.

Our Thoughts

You can't go wrong with Osprey bags. So many one baggers, digital nomads, minimalists use them that the majority of the packing lists on this website use Osprey bags.

Durable, sleek, and well designed, the Osprey 70 will handle whatever you take it. At 70L of capacity, there is more, probably way more room, than you'll ever need and then some.

25-40L bags can usually fit 3-5 days worth of clothing, but a 70L is bag is almost double that size. I think the Osprey would be magnificent for trips when you aren't going to be moving around with your luggage a lot. A fully packed Farpoint must weigh a ton.

The Osprey Farpoint looks like a typical top-loading backpack but fully unzips and lies flat so you easily pack and unpack. Top loading backpacks can be a nightmare when you are trying to optimize space. Since the bottom of the bag becomes invisible right away, its hard to see if everything is efficiently packed.

The Osprey also comes with a detachable daypack which is very convenient. I have another Osprey bag with a detachable daypack, and I will say I was impressed by the construction quality. Frequently daypacks are cheap and flimsy. Osprey daypacks are constructed with the same quality construction as the main bag. I use the detachable daypack as a primary backpack. After over five years and a couple of trips to Europe mine is still in almost perfect condition.

The final feature I'll talk about is that Osprey has strap management down to a science. I have a Tortuga Outbreaker, and if I have that bag off my back and pick it up, a dozen straps start flying around like Octopus tentacles. In contrast, Osprey bags have nifty pouches for unused straps so you can conveniently store them, and prevent them from flailing around when you don't need them.

👍 Reasons to Buy

  • Offers a lot of space for your things.
  • Well-built and reliable. It would probably last for a lifetime.
  • Comes with a detachable daypack.
  • The straps and the hip belts can be tucked inside in case you need them out of the way especially when placing the bag in tight spaces.

🤔 Things to Consider

  • Lacks organization in the mother backpack.
  • The daypack is too small and doesn't feature enough pockets.
  • The position of the side pockets can be hard to reach when using the bag.

💬 Reviewers Have Said

  • "It is excellent for plane and train travel given its strap stowage, and removable day pack. You can easily fit several weeks' worth of clothing, etc. in its main pocket."
  • "Two years, 30+ checked luggage flights, countless taxis, tuk-tuks, and trains, and one very happy customer. Large enough for four seasons of clothing and electronic gear. Not so large as to be unwieldy during cross-city jaunts. Pack design and materials are holding up 100%, no problems. Carries well, like a backpack."

" ...the Osprey Farpoint 70 is still the best fit for me in terms of comfort, capacity and durability. "

" The Osprey Farpoint 70 is a high-quality backpack that will suit all kinds of travelers....its robustness and lifetime guarantee mean you’ll be using it for years to come. "

" The capacity was more than enough for two months’ travelling around a country...Yet, it was also compact enough to be super portable. "

" I’d have to say I agree that this is a quality pack for travelling. It ticks all the boxes for me, with a lightweight design, plenty of travel related features (including the all-important security features) and a comfortable back system. "

Osprey Farpoint as a carry on?

I am looking into an osprey Farpoint 70 for my next backpacking trip. Without the daypack the bag is 55L which I think is a decent size for me (I WOULD NOT BE USING THE DAYPACK). Would I be able to take it as a carry on? It won't be full either. I am torn between the 70 and 40 but I'm scared the 40 will be too small. My trip will be 2 months. PLEASE DONT SUGGEST ANY OTHER BAGS, I have done my research and these two bags are what I have come to. MY MAIN CONCERN IS SPACE Thanks in advance! :)

I'd say the Farpoint 70 is too big for a carry on. It depends on the airlines you're flying, but it doesn't meet the Google-provided carry on dimensions (9x14x22). The Farpoint 70 is 26x14x13. Even without the daybag, it's too tall.

The Farpoint 40 is 22x14x9 so it should easily fit as a carryon.

I'd say you'd be able to do a trip with just a Farpoint 40. That's the bag my husband and I have (one each) and it's been perfect. We haven't tried carrying them on, but they seem like they'd be ok. I've seen people bring much larger bags as carryons.

How long is your trip?

I carry on with an Osprey Porter 46 L. That may be a nice compromise for you. I may check it on an intra European flight though as it may be too big for that. I haven't had any trouble on domestic flights. It's official dimensions are 22 X 14 X 9.

55 is too large for carry-on. You would have to go with the 40 or the Porter 46 at maximum. I had no issues with my Porter 46 in Europe, but it could be too large for some budget airlines.

The Wirecutter articles on Osprey travel bags go into great detail on this topic:

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-travel-backpack/

Thank you all for your help! I did look into the porter and I will consider it but the straps aren't the best. Also I'm going for 2-3 months, but I also need to consider any future travels!

Are you insisting that you have to get as Osprey bag? There are others that are well made and might suit you:

eBags TLS Motherlode Weekender and Weekender Junior MEI Voyageur Eagle Creek makes a few

and of course, the Rick Steves Carry On Convertible.

All of the above fit most airline carry on rules.

There are others but I tried to stick to a price similar to the Fairpoint. If you are willing to spend a little more look at Tom Bihn and Red Oxx.

I used the osprey Porter 46 all over Europe and Asian including a budget airline from Venice to France. The dimension may make look that it won't fit but you forget that this is soft suitcase meaning that you can sqeeze to make it fit. What you do before boarding is loading up on your body all your item until you pass the luggage check point. Then load it in your bag then use the compression cords. Also like that it has sternum strap as well as belt strap making it handy to wear all day. This came especially useful in Japan when everyone was scrambling for buses when the train tracks was flooded. All I need to do was wear it and go versus lugging heavy luggage up stairs. So yes even after 5 years later I am still using the same bag and even got it for my brother who after coming back from Japan was extremely glad he had this luggage.

And yes 46l is the largest I dare go because although it soft there really is no way to shorten the length. My wife and I found that we had plenty of room. We tested our load including clothes by taking a weekend trip on train and stay in hostel. This help us fine tune our gear. Also don't forget that if you forgot anything you can buy it there.

Another option is the Pacsafe Venturesafe 45L, I've used this for 2-3 weeks in Europe and find it's perfect for packing light and moving quickly. Whatever you decide on consider a Eaglecreek pack-it folder, this has made travel so much easier for keeping clothes wrinkle free and organized, add a couple of packing cubes and I set for any trip.

I have been using the farpoint 40 for a couple of years ( over 4 months worth of europe travel) it still looks like new. with sometimes only 7kg limit with carry-on its very light.( very important to keep in mind) so you can carry more items. i find it holds my laptop nicely in its own internal padded area. knowing it complies with the guidelines gives me piece of mind.

love my farpoint 40 for how comfortable it is and how effective the frame is at distributing the weight. i've tried out several other 'sleeker' looking bags but keep coming back to it. i don't love the laptop/organizer pocket being in the front because the weight is away from your body, and you definitely can't get anything larger than a 13" laptop in there. the load lifters do help to keep the weight close to you though. the bag also suffers from osprey's most annoying flaws: unstretchy water bottle pockets and compression straps that go right over them, but that's the case on all their bags.

that said, i haven't found anything better yet.

also worth noting that the compression straps extend from a fabric lip that covers the zippers when clipped shut, which means you don't need the obvious lock on your bag if you're not leaving it anywhere unattended, but just trying to deter the opportunistic. it's a pain when you want to get in there quickly.

as others have mentioned, the 55 is too big to carry on. i used only the 40 ( in the s/m size, so 38L) for a 1 month summer trip and had probably 1/3rd of the bag still free. i think you will be ok with just the 40 and careful packing (though of course everyone has their own needs), but if you need more space I would say get a little backpack with a good grab handle or a shoulder bag you can use as your day bag. i brought a packable 12L purse with and that worked great as my daypack and also for keeping all my essentials on the front of my body while on travel days.

honestly you probably don't want to be carrying the 55+15 on your back simultaneously...have you seen pics of this beast fully loaded? personally i wouldn't bet my balance against it, and i definitely wouldn't want to run to catch a train with it on!

NB: i think you are female from your name, so just want to add that if you are under 5'4" or have a short torso, the s/m of this is definitely your bag. I tried...uh...6 others for comfort before deciding on it, and 4 since then, and nothing else is as comfortable.

edit: just deleted another comment i left below which was lacking context, as it was a response to another person's moderately snarky comment :-)

Someone on Amazon listed how the Osprey Porter Travel Backpack Bag (46 Liter) fits on all airlines.

Since you only want to hear about those bags, the 70 is too big and the 55 is also probably too big for carry on. The 40 may be too small for you. You could probably be fine with a 45 L bag but since it's not made in this model you will have to decide.

you definitely won't be able to carry on 70L, and it may be very expensive to try to - ryanair for example, will ding you at the gate if your bag is too big (something like $75?)

i think you can either use a 40L bag or resign yourself to checking/add'l bag fees.

if you're in the US you should be able to order/buy one and try test packing it at home once you've got your packing list sorted, and decide from there if you need more space. it really is more space than you think, but that's the only way to be sure.

also once you've packed up your 40L, try taking a walk around or going up a few flights of stairs and then consider if you want to carry more than that. sarah murdoch's packing video changed my life - now i weigh everything i bring with on a kitchen scale, makes a huge difference.

I'm a 26 year old, 5'7" female (you don't need to know my weight...) with an Osprey Farpoint 40 M/L and I love it. I've had the RS convertible carry on for a six week trip and sorry Rick, but that was not a pleasant or comfortable experience... Other people swear by that RS bag and if it works for them; lovely. I on the other hand, ADORE the real padded shoulder straps and padded hip belts on the Osprey Farpoint bags. They really make the world of difference. The light wire frame is on point with load distribution and the load lifters are excellent. 40L is enough space for a 2 month trip, no worries. Just be prepared to do laundry as needed. Consider packing cubes to save space/compress your clothes. Osprey bags are pricey so there is that to consider, but if you're already decided then to me, the Farpoint 40 is how a carry on sized, front loading backpack is done!

Yes there a few negatives about the bag, i.e. the not so stretchy front mesh holders, etc. that a few other people have mentioned. That's just another reason to go see the bag in person and get a feel for it. I personally will trade a poorly designed water bottle holder for the excellent light wire frame/padded hip belts.

The 55 and 70 are too big to carry on. Like, way too big. Because of the light wire frames, you can't bend the bags to be smaller and scrunch them to fit an overhead airline bin. The 50 and 70L are just too big for carry on. Do you live near an REI store? Not telling you to buy it there necessarily but what you should do is go to an REI and test the bags you're considering. They also have weights to add to the bags to simulate what it'll feel like schlepping all your stuff around on your back. (They can also help with tips on how to pack the bag in terms of where to place your heaviest items within the bag, etc.)

I suggest going to the store, trying on each weighted bag you're considering, and walking around the store/up and down their stairs so you get an idea. Maybe it's just me but I could never buy a bag or piece of luggage without holding it in my hands and seeing it in person. Good luck with your search/purchase!

I agree with Frank II - the Farpoint 70 is going to be too large for carry-on even at 55L, especially if you'll be using any European airlines during your trip. If you're set on that particular pack, I wouldn't be too concerned about checking one bag. I do that on every trip and it's never been a problem.

Whether it will have enough space is something you could determine by gathering all the kit you plan to take and doing a test packing. After that do a walkabout in your home area for an hour or so to see how the pack feels when it's fully loaded. The general principle with many here is that they pack the same for two weeks as for two months.

Having you considered leaving the Daypack attached while travelling, but with nothing inside. That way you'd have something to use for day touring and also a convenient accessory for bringing back souvenirs.

"Also I'm going for 2-3 months"

Be sure that you don't exceed 90 days in the Schengen area, as there can be severe penalties (financial and other).

Frank II, your response makes me curious. If, hypothetically, the OP (or, hypothetically, others watching this thread), were interested in something besides the Osprey Farpoint, what would you recommend in the 45L size?

No, not in a million years will you be able to take the Farpoint 70/55 on any plane as a carry-on. Buy the Farpoint 40 and you'll have no problems, unless you 'pack it to the gills' and exceed the weight limit, and are unlucky enough for the airline staff to single you out and weigh your luggage. I've got a Farpoint 80 here at home gathering dust, used it once, then brought a Porter 45 used that a fair bit, still do. Then I drought a Farpoint 40 (great bag, especially if you are going to lug it around on your back for a far distance) it is very comfortable, with a great internal frame and good hip belt. I'm packing lighter still these days and have just taken delivery of a Tom Bihn Aeronaut 30 for an upcoming trip to Europe (28 days). It's more now a case of not how much you pack, it's what you pack, and what you actually need.
