Pittsburgh Brewery Guide
Purchase the official guide at any brewery in town and begin your mission to try them all. Each brewery will stamp their designated page upon your visit, just like a passport. Also includes the history of each brewery, amenities, and room for notes.
The new version of the Pittsburgh Brewery Guide offers more ways to earn prizes. We are getting the new version of the guide out to breweries starting April 12. Check the below FAQ on where to find a guide this week.
See the prizes
Where can I purchase a Pittsburgh Brewery Guide?
The Pittsburgh Brewery Guide can be purchased at any Pittsburgh Brewers Guild member brewery. We do our very best to keep them in stock. If you are having difficulty obtaining a guide, please email [email protected]
How much does the guide cost?
The Pittsburgh Brewery Guide is $10.
How old do I need to be to participate?
Participants must be 21 years old to participate in the Pittsburgh Brewery Guide and receive stamps. However, many of our breweries are family friendly and welcome children of all ages.
How do I get my Pittsburgh Brewery Guide stamped?
To receive a stamp, simply show your guide to a bartender at any participating brewery. You receive one stamp per brewery.
How many breweries are featured in the third edition of the Pittsburgh Brewery Guide?
This version includes 44 breweries, including many that have opened in the two years since the previous version was released.
What prizes can I win?
For more information regarding prizes please see our Pittsburgh Brewery Guide prizes page.
Do I get to keep my guide once it’s complete?
Yes, the guide is yours to keep! Once you’ve collected all stamps and obtain your prize, we encourage you to keep your passport and showcase what a cultured beer drinker you are.
Does the Pittsburgh Brewery Guide expire?
The first, second and third edition of the passport does not expire. See your passport for prize eligibility. The first edition is eligible for the glass prize at 30 breweries visited. The second edition is eligible for the three prize levels. The third edition is eligible for four prize levels.
Stamps must be earned on each individual Guide, meaning you cannot earn a prize for 10 breweries visited if you have five stamps on a the second edition of the Guide and five stamps on the third edition of the Guide.
Am I eligible for the 40 breweries visited prize if I have the second edition of the Guide?
Unfortunately, no. Each version of the Guide has a distinct prize structure, so to earn a prize for visiting 40 breweries you must have the third edition of the Guide.
How are the participating breweries selected?
Each participating brewery is a member of the Pittsburgh Brewers Guild. In order to join the guild, each brewery pays financial dues and produces beer in Allegheny County. More breweries are expected to join the guild in the future, and we plan to add them to future editions of the guide.
What happens if my Pittsburgh Brewery Guide is lost or stolen?
While we certainly hope that doesn’t happen, there is unfortunately no way we could help due to a limited number of printed guides.
I forgot to bring my Pittsburgh Brewery Guide while visiting one of the participating breweries. Am I still able to get a stamp?
Yes. Keep the receipt from your purchase and go back to the brewery to get the stamp.
Who do I contact if I have questions about the Pittsburgh Brewery Guide?
You can email [email protected] with any questions.
We love hearing from craft beer enthusiasts, whether you’re a local or just visiting. Submit your information below and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

City Brew Tours Review – An Introduction to Pittsburgh’s Beer Scene

Pittsburgh's brewery scene is pretty astounding. In the past ten years we've gone from having just a handful of breweries to having well over four dozen in an hour radius with another couple dozen set to open in the next few years.
As such, tackling them all can be quite tricky unless you're able to go out for a beer every single weekend.
To help get you out to more breweries in one go, City Brew Tours launched a Pittsburgh beer tour to help introduce beer fans into Pittsburgh's growing and thriving craft beer scene.
We were invited out by City Brew Tours to check out their After Hours Brew Tour which was just the evening out we were looking for.
Four Breweries, Sixteen Samples
A typical itinerary for City Brew Tours visits four breweries and includes three to five samples at each spot, behind-the-scenes tours, and dinner at one select brewery along the way.
Our tour's brewery list featured Auroch's Brewery, a gluten free brewery in Emsworth; Allegheny City Brewery, a small brewery in an old rowhouse in Deutschtown; Penn Brewery, Pittsburgh's oldest craft brewery in Troy Hill (also our stop for dinner); and Strange Roots (formerly known as Draai Laag), an experimental brewery that has a strong focus on sour/wild fermentation in Millvale.
We met our guide and fellow attendees in Market Square and were driven to our first brewery, Auroch's, in a matter of minutes to start the night of drinking, production tours, and learning about all things beer with our new friends.
The Guide Was Critical to the Tour's Success
Between the stops our knowledgeable guide, Eric, walked us through the 10,000 year history of beer, and used the breweries as means to highlight the evolution of beer as you go- including the first use of grains, the implementation of the Germany purity law, the cultivation of hops, and modern takes on the wild fermentation process.
This knowledge became especially apparent when he hand-selected the beers we sampled as to highlight the differences in grains, hops, and other characteristics in the various beer styles.
We found this especially useful to understand why we like or dislike particular kinds of beer. Oddly enough, this is something you realize you never take time to think about when you're out having a pint. (It turns out Angie likes American hops used in IPAs for the citrus flavors, while I find the European style hops more palatable for their earthiness- something I never knew despite my years of beer drinking and published IPA aversion.)
Although Eric curated the draft selections for the group based on our preferences, which were quite varied overall, he also gave us a few opportunities to pick samples ourselves so that we could all try a beer we had our eye on that he did not select.
Penn Brewery Spoils This Tour
Our dinner stop on the tour was Penn Brewery, what is considered to be Pittsburgh's oldest craft brewery, and one we're also fairly critical of as well. (We're not particularly fans of their year round brews, but the seasonal and one-off creations are quite good.)
Penn Brewery treats this tour like kings, and provides a platter at dinner which on our tour included bratwurst, a half of a Reuben, several sides, a piergoi, and a house made cookie to top it all off- a perfect cross-section of their menu if there ever was one.
But they go even further in providing your samples not in tiny shots, as is standard for most breweries, but in full pitchers such that we ended up having five pitchers for six guests, plus an extra taster on the side for good measure.
All-in-all, it is tours like these that help give you a new appreciation to breweries you had strong opinions of, and we definitely view Penn Brewery in a new light after our stop on this tour.
Overall, the City Brew Tour of Pittsburgh is set up as a great introduction into Pittsburgh's craft beer scene. If you've ever wanted to try an assortment of breweries in the city, or simply want to get behind-the-scene's access or even learn about the history of beer making, this tour will have what you seek.
City Brew Tours operates several brew tours in Pittsburgh which visits a selection of roughly ten breweries.
We'd like to thank City Brew Tours for inviting us out for a tour. As always, all opinions are our own. Please take public transportation or Uber/Lyft to this one- the samples add up quick!

We had a tour last week with our beer guide Kevin. He was extremely knowledgeable about all beers and the history of the area, very friendly and just really enjoyable as a tour guide. We went to Old Thunder in Blawnox, Strange Roots in Millvale and Allegheny City on the North Side - each with its own ambiance and tasty brews. We'd be happy to go on another tour with friends sometime!
Second time we used them and another awesome experience. Braxton was great and knowledgeable. Will be back next time we are in Pittsburg!

Hi Lori, I appreciate the feedback! Nadia is awesome, and it looks like she could almost double as a part-time photographer with those great pictures! I'm happy to hear you had such an unforgettable experience, and hope to see you on another soon! Cheers!
When we were out in Pittsburgh, Wifey and I knew we'd have a lot of time to ourselves (my son was participating in a regional chorus event) and one of the things we wanted to do was the City Brew Tour. What better way to discover a city's great beers that having a beer expert drive you around in a small bus to four breweries and talking about the breweries, their brewing processes and tasting great beer...oh, and add in a tasty meal. Beer bliss! Our tour guide, Jesse, brought us to four breweries - Eleventh Hour Brewing, Couch Brewery, Penn Brewery Allegheny City Brewing and are each one we did did tastings of 3-5 types of beer. I love good beer, but I do have my likes and dislikes so there weren't many surprises for the kinds of beers I liked throughout the night. Loved the beer at our first stop of the night, Eleventh Hour Brewing. We received a nice tour of the brewing area and discussed the processing while enjoying some of their tasty treats. The staff here could not have been nicer and they were very accommodating with our questions and they knew their beers. I'm not an IPA guy, but the one we tried was pretty good. I would love to hang out here if I lived in the area. Our second stop was Couch Brewery and it was a really fun place with excellent beer. Kind of retro with lots of TVs, comfortable places to sit and hang out and they do trivia here too (after reading some reviews, bingo night also seems like a hit). Another place I'd like to hang out if I lived here. Unfortunately, I wasn't keeping track of the KINDS of beer we tried, but I do remember I had a great dark beer here - oatmeal stout maybe (plus, the tasters we had here were more like full beers. The place was pretty full already by the time we were here, but the b-ball area where they do their brewing was pretty cool. Penn Brewery was our third stop of the night and, thankfully, included our meal as I was feeling the previous stops at this point. Penn was the most 'commercial' of our four stops, and by that I simply mean that their beers can be found pretty easily outside the local area. Loved the beers here, but since I wasn't keeping track I can't tell you what I had. Our meal here was very good - set up in a beer hall fashion - and really hit the spot at the right time (if I remember correctly it was a brat with some kraut, a pierogi, some veggies and half a sandwich - maybe a Reuben of some sort with a delish red cabbage on pumpernickel and came with some great cookies as well). Penn Brewery seemed like the kind of bar I'd have liked in college. I'd recommend this place for sure! Allegheny City was our last stop on the tour and, though small, was a really fun place that was dog-friendly...always a plus in my book. As with our first four stops I wasn't keeping perfect track of whet we were trying, but I remember not liking a couple I tried here. I'm not an IPA guy and I know we had an IPA and also the cider and I didn't love them. I also had one of the Belgian Tripels and if I remember correctly it was almost like a sour- wasn't bad, I just wasn't expecting it. I'm sure they've got some great beers here, I just didn't have one that screamed 'excellent!' I still loved the place and it was a great place to finish the evening. Kind of had a friendly new neighborhood feel to it

Thanks for the great review, Cassie! I'm so happy to hear that you learned so much from Braxton, had an amazing time doing it. I hope we'll see you on another tour one day in the future. Cheers!
Had a great experience with the After Hours Brew Tour. We had a pretty full van of 12. Brian was our guide and easily found him in front of the Marriot City Center. The van is hard to miss, but honestly a Kiss concert was about to kick off and there were people everywhere. We hit four different breweries, 2 in the Lawrenceville area and 2 on the North side. The breweries were 11th Hour, Hop Farm, Penn and Allegheny. At each stop we were educated on the brewing process and how different places did different things. We were also able to sample 4 beers from each place. Some good, some great, some ehhh, it's your taste. At Penn Brewery we were served dinner with beer pairings. The food was really good, the beer went well with it. At each place we had a bit of time to go to tap rooms and purchase a full drink or take away growlers and such. The whole experience was great. It was a nice way to find a bunch of new beers. See a few breweries and get a bit of an education while being driven around. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone and I'd love to do it again in another city.

If you're looking for a gift for a beer lover, look no further. City Brew Tours did all the planning and we just showed up. They chose 3 local breweries that each had a unique ambiance as well as a solid selection of brews from sours to IPAs to stouts. Our guide, Brian, was extremely knowledgeable about the brew scene in Pittsburgh. He also shared about the history of brewing beer which made the trip very enjoyable. Highly recommend City Brew Tours!

Fantastic way to explore your city and spend an afternoon/evening
"I would highly recommend this to anyone. Barry and Eric were excellent tour guides and did a great job of not only teaching us about the history of beer, but also made a point to learn about each person's favorite type of beer so it was including in the samplings. All the places we visited were great. I definitely plan on doing this again."
Most Enjoyable Evening
"The City Brew tour that we took was a most enjoyable evening. We visited four breweries and drank a lot of great craft beer. The dinner at Penn Brewing was delicious. Barry, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and made traveling between breweries pleasurable and fun. Pittsburgh is fortunate that City Brew Tours is here. Book your tour today!"
Great Burgh Activity
"Had a great time. Great beer, food, and guides. Beer was very diverse. It was great getting behind the scenes at the breweries to experience unique elements of each."

Multi-Stop Guided Beer Tours in the Steel City
Pick a tour bus and strap in for the ride, cause the Steel City doesn't sling pints of helium beer . No, it serves some of the best craft brews in the nation.
Pittsburgh Brew Tours (City Brew Tours Pittsburgh)
"You drink, We drive" is quite the tagline for City Brew Tours a regional/multi-state brewery tour company . City Brew Tours in Pittsburgh promises an unforgettable craft beer journey around the Steel City that for $70/person, feels quite worth it. Especially so given the range of beer sampling over 3 stops, comfy transpo, and guided lessons steeped in beer culture and the local craft beer scene. Tours are offered Wednesday through Sunday.
Porter Brewery Tours
If you're down to take a mini school bus around to a few brewpubs, Porter Brewery Tours is down to be your guide. PBT offers the standard set up of 3 brewery stops, complete with music, snacks, and water. Porter Brew Tours feels slightly more casual in their approach, giving you time to enjoy 2-3 samples of beer at each brewery, while generally staying out of the way.
An arrangement is generally made to enable you to get a tour from the owner/operators of a select brewery on the tour. Always good to meet the craft artisans and get insight into their brewing process and methods.
Steel City Brew Tours
SCBT is a full service party bus that, in simple terms, connects residents and tourists with craft beer in Pittsburgh. Birthday party guests, bachelorettes, and daydrinkers alike can enjoy a multi-hour, multi-brewery tour around the Steel City for reasonable prices. They even rent out the bus for maximum fun, like tailgating at a Steelers game. Don't forget the beer brats .
Common Pittsburgh brewery stops include Grist House, Couch Brewery, and the Allegheny City Brewing Company.
Brewery, Bits and Bites Tour
'Burgh Bits & Bites Tours are more centered around food, but that doesn't mean they can't collaborate with PA Brew Tours to throw a solid beer tour to introduce folks to the local craft beer scene. The tour rolled through Bloomfield and included a stop at Church Brew Works as well. Hopefully this tour will resume again at a future date.
Tours offered by Pittsburgh Breweries
Sometimes all you want is to casually tour a brewery on your own. Low key, accessible, highly informal, just showing up to a brewery at the tour time is always a fun time. The downside is that sometimes tours fill up. Here are a few Pittsburgh breweries that offer in-person tours.
The fix must be in because a lot of these breweries charge the same fee ($25) for a tour of their production facility. That said, some of them are well worth it.
East End Brewing Company
East End Brewing comes out swinging with a tour of their "bigger, better Brewery". You start in the Brewpub with beer before you are guided through the brewery, all while discussing the history of EEBC. That means 4 samples of current brews, followed by the educational "nature" walk, followed by a filled growler's worth of East End craft beer. The tour lasts an hour, but the memory lasts a lifetime. 21+ on the tour, no exceptions.
Grist House Craft Brewery
On occasion, Grist House will offer custom tours every hour on the hour on Saturdays. Limited to 10 people. Post-tour, or perhaps pre-tour, guests can load up on Hazedelic Juice Grenades and Solar Submarines.
You can also walk about of Grist House several dollars lighter courtesy of the sweet beer swag they have available. Wearing their striped windbreaker will give you permission to tell complete strangers that you like the cut of their jib. Hitchhiker Brewing Company Brewery Tour
You can enjoy a tour on the first Saturday of the month in the Sharpsburg taproom. It includes an in-depth tour of the brewery, a beer tasting, and, some glassware you can take home. Note - it is a paid tour ($25).
Hitchhiker may be a dog friendly brewery, but we're not sure they let your puppers around the beer, so it's best to check with management before bringing Fido to the brewery for a tour of the premises.
Penn Brewery
"Pittsburgh's Microbrewery" offers guided tours at 1:00pm on selected Saturdays. The tour will run you $25 per person. Included is a 16oz beer and a t-shirt or filled growler. No, those aren't typos. A pint plus merch or more beer. We're sold!
Penn Brewery also offers VIP sessions and Private tours. The VIP session upgrades you to more beer samples and a meet-and-greet with the brewer. It's going to run you an extra $20 dollars. Private tours run up to a max of 25 guests. There is a $200 fee that covers the first 10 people, with an additional $10 per head after that. You need to book a private tour a few weeks in advance.
Threadbare Cider House & Meadery
Threadbare offers both Private Adult Tours and Private Family Tours. For the former, a certified tour guide will take you through the cider creation process. This includes how Threadbare sources apples and yeasts, as well how they produce bottle-conditioned hard ciders.
For the latter, parents and children get to enjoy some non-alcoholic cider to accompany their walk through the Cider House. Threadbare may even spin a yarn about the Steel City's own Johnny "Appleseed" Chapman.
Both tours run all week, with weekday availability from 11am-7pm, Saturday from 5:30pm-8pm, and Sunday from 11am-3pm. Min and Max guests range from 6-22. You need to make contact with Threadbare Cider House & Meadery first for a reservation.
Brew Tours in Nearby Pennsylvania Cities & Counties

Breweries included on their tours are Crooked Eye Brewing, Tower Hill Brewery, Sacred Vice Brewing, Punch Buggy Brewing Company, and more. Tours run on the weekend and cost about $95 per person. LBT also books private tours. If that's what you're looking for, get in touch with them.
Tastings and Tours
T&T covers Lehigh/Berks County, Bucks County, and Cape May for craft beverage fun. We say craft beverage because Tastings and Tours hits breweries, distilleries, and wineries alike. Included in their tours are VIP access to the facilities and a lunch.
