In winter, which runs from May to September, sunny days are dry and the nights are cold. Jozi is also notorious for its hailstorms. Golf ball-sized chunks have been known to fall on the city, resulting in a fair amount of damage.

Transport in Johannesburg
Johannesburg, also affectionally called Jozi or Egoli by locals, is a major urban metropolis which makes getting around more challenging than travelling in a compact space like Cape Town.
Most tourists book their flights to Johannesburg as its the business hub of Southern Africa and then make their way to the many tourist spots around the country.
Here are several options to make it easier:
A new and exciting service, the Gautrain is a direct line between the major hubs of Johannesburg.
Built to alleviate major traffic problems, it connects the OR Tambo International Airport to Sandton and Rosebank as well as to Hatfield, Pretoria, Midrand and Centurion.
A map of the Gautrain routes is available online, as is the schedule and other information. Gautrain fares vary so check their website out for more detailed information.

They typically operate along main roads and by flagging down a taxi going in the right direction using this infographic on Joburg taxi hand signals, you can get to within walking distance of your destination for a few bucks.
Be warned though, this is South African style transport which means there is always room for one more passenger, no matter how full the taxi is!
For longer journeys, large groups, or if you prefer to make your own way around Jozi, car hire is probably your best bet.
- Check out these for car rental options in Johannesburg.

#1 – The Apartheid Museum – Possibly one of the most important places to visit in Johannesburg
- Learn about the history of South Africa
- Read and listen to real human stories from the most shameful time in the country’s history
- One of the most important and sobering points of interest in Johannesburg
Why it’s awesome: A sobering reminder of South Africa’s not too distant past, the Apartheid Museum can’t be missed off anyone’s Johannesburg itinerary. Photographs, films, and personal accounts document the apartheid era, creating a sobering and thought-provoking experience for the visitor. You’ll witness an emotional journey as you head along South Africa’s path to democracy, seeing decades of oppression. The country is still recovering from the Apartheid era, and this museum gives an excellent account of what happened, and how South Africa is likely to move forward.
What to do there: Such an important museum requires at least two hours of your time, but more if you can give it. Learning about the rise and fall of the Apartheid era can be a chilling experience, but like many museums around the world that deal with tragedy, it actively encourages it from happening again. The museum is a non-for-profit organisation and relies on donations and sponsorships to continue spreading its important message. If you’ve enjoyed your visit to Johannesburg’s most important museum, any donation will be welcomed!
#2 – Gold Reef City – Easily one of the most fun places to check out in Johannesburg
- Theme park and historical exhibits from the Gold Rush days
- Take an underground tour of a gold mine
- One of the best attractions in Johannesburg for families
Why it’s awesome: One of the most interesting things about Gold Reef City is that it’s actually a former gold mine! It was closed in 1971 though, and a theme park was built in its place. The giant wheel at the theme park is the perfect place to get a fabulous view of the city skyline and Soccer City. It’s more than just a theme park though, there’s also a petting zoo, mini-golf, and a casino for the adults. This is one of the best Johannesburg vacation ideas as there’s so much to do!
What to do there: Where to start? Well, if you travel to Johannesburg with the kids, they’ll probably twist your arm to head to the theme park. There are rides for all ages – think spinning teacups and Ferris wheels, all the way up to white-knuckle rollercoasters. Mini-golf is a good way to get competitive too! One thing you can’t do at any regular theme park is a tour of the former goldmine. It used to be one of the richest gold mines in the world before its closure and heading down the mine is a cool experience. You can also enjoy exploring the recreations of buildings and businesses from that time!
#3 – Lion Park
- See more than 80 lions throughout the park
- Wildlife conservation area that protects Transvaal lions
- One of the coolest attractions in Johannesburg to take the kids
Why it’s awesome: If you want to see lions when you travel to Johannesburg but don’t have time to get out to Kruger National Park, then there’s an alternative! The family-friendly Lion Park is the perfect place to get up close and personal with these magnificent beasts. In fact, there are around 80 in the 500-acre park, including rare white lions! It’s not just lions either, visit the park to see jackals, hyenas, painted hunting dogs, and antelope. Don’t worry, they’re all kept in separate enclosures!
What to do there: If you’re passionate about animals and wildlife, you can’t miss a trip to Lion Park. It’s one of the best places in Johannesburg to visit as a family too! The kids will love having the chance to cuddle a lion cub, feed a giraffe by hand, and take a stroll along the cheetah walk. You can do a self-guided tour, but even better is a guided game drive through the park. On that, you’ll have the chance to see ostriches, zebras as well as other animals already mentioned. You can also have a go at river rafting and night time feeding adventures at Lion Park!
#4 – The Maboneng Precinct – One of the nicer places in Johannesburg to sightsee!
- Formerly a run-down neighbourhood
- Nowadays, one of the best examples of an urban renewal project in the world
- Home to some of the best places to eat in Johannesburg
Why it’s awesome: If you’re interested in urban renewal projects, don’t miss heading to one of the best places in Johannesburg: The Maboneng Precinct. The name means “place of light” and while it may not have been in the past, it certainly is now. This hipster-friendly area is one of the coolest spots in town, and it’s got everything you’d expect from a big city in a single district. There are restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, entertainment venues – all in a charming residential area.
What to do there: As well as what we’ve already written, this Maboneng Precinct is a great place for art lovers to enjoy while in the city. The warehouses have been transformed into galleries and studios, and you can even buy some of their artwork if you think it’d make a nice decoration at home! There’s an independent cinema too, a great place to catch a movie, and a community centre where you can find out more about the people and the area. Maboneng Precinct boasts some of the best places to eat in Johannesburg too!
#5 – Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens – A beautiful and scenic place to check out in Johannesburg
- A tranquil and peaceful wilderness area on the outskirts of the city
- Escape the hustle and bustle of city centre Johannesburg
- One of the best places in Johannesburg to disconnect from everyday life
Why it’s awesome: South Africa is a big country and there are only 9 national botanical gardens across the whole nation. Walter Sisulu is one of those and it’s definitely worth taking a trip to the edge of the city to visit. As well as the usual trees and plants you’d expect from a botanical garden, this one has red rock cliffs and the picturesque Witpoortjie Waterfall. It’s the perfect escape from the busy city!
What to do there: There are some great hikes you can take advantage of in Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens. The Fern Trail is a particular favourite! There are a number of cool ways to see animals in the garden too, especially in the bird and butterfly garden. No prizes for guessing which animals call that home! If you’re a keen twitcher, you may even be lucky enough to spot a black eagle. Don’t forget your camera as that will make for a really impressive photo! Even if you don’t spot an eagle, the Gardens are one of the best places in Johannesburg for photographers, as the landscapes are gorgeous.
#6 – Constitution Hill
- Get another insight into South Africa’s history from visiting the former prison
- Amazing city views and great photo opportunities
- Take a guided tour to learn more about this fascinating place
Why it’s awesome: What to Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi have in common? They were both held at The Fort – the prison on Constitution Hill known for holding political prisoners, passive resistors, and just general common criminals. Unfortunately, they were treated terribly which is part of the reason that this place has such a fearsome reputation. The Court is still located on the hill and you can actually attend hearings and watch the country’s judicial processes. If you’re less into the legal and penal side of things, you can always enjoy views of the most recognisable landmarks in Johannesburg from here.
What to do there: There are three museums to explore on Constitution Hill to get an insight into not only this place’s brutal past but South African history in general. These are the Number Four, the Old Fort, and the Women’s Gaol. The exhibits here are like those of the Apartheid Museum, in a way that they make you think and really stir up emotions. You can take a guided tour of Constitution Hill if you want to get deeply into with the judicial system and history of South Africa.

#7 – The Cradle of Humankind – One of Johannesburg’s coolest historical sites
- A UNESCO World Heritage site
- One of the coolest and most interesting day trips from Johannesburg
- The location of some of the oldest hominid fossils ever found
Why it’s awesome: It’s an hour out of the city, but this place is a Johannesburg must-see. The oldest hominid fossils ever found are in this 180-square mile site, and this may just be the location that the human race originated from! It’s so important that UNESCO has labelled it a World Heritage site, as its one of the world’s most important paleo-anthropological sites. Human-like skeletons found here date as far back as 3.5 million years ago, which is pretty mind-blowing. Don’t miss this off your Johannesburg itinerary!
What to do there: If seeing skulls that date back more than 2 million years doesn’t quite pique your interest, we’re not sure what will. However, there are some other cool attractions that are worth seeing at the Cradle of Humankind! The Maropeng Visitor Centre is the place to see exhibits and really learn about the place, but there are some great natural attractions on site too. Want to go into an underground cave system? Then the Sterkfontein Stalactitic Caves are the perfect place for you. 6 interlinked chambers 40 metres below the earth may not be great if you’re claustrophobic, but they’re certainly fascinating! An underground lake is also found here. Several tour companies offer day trips to this Johannesburg must-see.
#8 – Neighbourgoods Market – A must-see for foodies
- One of the most popular markets in Johannesburg
- Saturday lunchtime market with over 100 food choices
Why it’s awesome: As little as ten years ago, many tourists would have had absolutely no reason to go to the once dilapidated Braamfontein Area. However, Neighbourgoods Market has transformed all that and it’s one of the real hotspots in Johannesburg! Every Saturday, the area comes alive with the smells of food from all over the globe, the sound of live music, and the general great atmosphere of this cool hipster haven. Whether you want gourmet food, flavourful street food, or a quality coffee, this is the place to be. A real foodie heaven, Neighbourgoods offers some of the best places to eat in Johannesburg!
What to do there: Well, since this is one of the best places to eat in Johannesburg it would be rude not to snap up some tasty dishes. Although you’ll be welcomed into Neighbourgoods market, this place was initially set up for locals and it’s the perfect place to make new friends and get chatting to people who call the city home. The rooftop market is not only a great place to eat, but for shopping too. You’ll find independent designers and local craft stalls here too, so it’s a great place to pick up some souvenirs! You could even stay nearby in one of Johannesburgs best hostels.
#9 – Top of Africa
- The tallest building in Africa
- Get excellent panoramic views across the whole of Johannesburg
- See the city’s unusual topography and geography
Why it’s awesome: Incredibly, Johannesburg is the only city of its size that is not located near a major water source. You may not know this before you ascend to the Top of Africa, but you will notice it from the observation deck! The Top of Africa name is very apt, as it’s at the top of the Carlton Centre, the tallest building in Africa. When it was constructed in the early 1970s, it was the tallest building in the southern hemisphere!
What to do there: The Top of Africa is a great place to get stunning views of Johannesburg and the surrounding area. As well as noticing the lack of nearby water source, you’ll probably note the world’s largest urban forest here too. Once you’ve finished at the observation deck, head down into the Carlton Centre. It may not be the luxury hotel that it once was, but it still has a shopping centre on-site where you could pick up some souvenirs!
#10 – Collectors Treasury
- Africa’s largest used and rare book shop
- Try and find a space that isn’t occupied by a book!
- One of the best places in Johannesburg for readers and bibliophiles
Why it’s awesome: This family business was set up above a garage in 1974 but has had to move since then due to stock size. Incredibly, at Collectors Treasury, there are over 1 million used books! Some of them are standard run of the mill books, but some are really rare and cool. You could spend ages getting lost here among the towering piles and walls lined with books. A Johannesburg must-see for readers!
What to do there: You don’t have to be interested in reading or books to visit Collectors Treasury. It does help though! This unusual and intriguing store also collects maps, vinyl records, photographs, and a whole host of other memorabilia from days gone by. You don’t have to buy anything to enjoy the store, just drink in the atmosphere and step back into the past when most modern-day electronics weren’t even thought of!

2 – Tour Constitutional Hill
If you’re visiting South Africa, it’s crucial to spend some time learning about apratheid.
The brutal, 43-year long period of national segregation is still the subject of research and analysis, and a visit to Constitutional Hill can help you better understand this troubling era.
This facility was once a notorious complex of prisons, where political activists and ordinary citizens alike were incarcerated throughout apartheid’s reign.
Today, it has been transformed into a beautiful and thought-provoking museum that focuses on promoting human rights through historical education and active engagement.
The area is part of the larger Human Rights Precinct, which hosts live events, learning sessions, and public forums.
You can visit the other educational institutions in the area, including the Old Fort Museum, the Women’s Gaol Museum, and the Number Four Museum.
It’s also home to the Constitutional Court, which is one of the highest courts in the country, and focuses on upholding the nation’s primary laws.
You can also pair your visit with a tour of the Apartheid Museum, whose immersive exhibits explore the tragedy more in-depth.
It’s one of the most impactful things to do in Johannesburg.

3 – Admire the plants at Johannesburg Botanical Gardens
If nature is more your style, you’ll find plenty to enjoy at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens .
With 200 acres of stunning greenery, there are a variety of local and international plants spread across seven different gardens.
Check out the impressive array of desert plants in the Succulent Garden, featuring the only cactus indigenous to South Africa.
Or see (and smell) the medicinal plants of the Herb Garden.
And if you’re a theater fan, be sure to spend some time in the Shakespeare Garden, which is filled with plants and herbs that were featured in the Bard’s plays.
You’ll have a wonderful time exploring the beautiful surroundings, and learning more about the garden’s residents.
4 – See the sights from up high at the Carlton Centre
Have you ever wanted to go shopping in a record-breaking building?
Then check out the Carlton Center during your visit.
This impressive mall is best known for its impressive height; it is the tallest building in Africa at 730 feet.
Be sure to take some time to go up to the top of the building, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the city and the surrounding area.
Then head downstairs to do some shopping, with a wide variety of retailers ranging from Ackermans to Timberland to Foschini.
You won’t want to miss a trip to this iconic structure!
5 – Explore the many sides of Soweto
Another fascinating part of the country’s history is the story of Soweto.
This township was one of the most impacted by apartheid, and was famously the site of the Soweto Uprising, a mass protest over the poor conditions in the community. Today, it remains a dynamic and fascinating place, with some wonderful historical areas to explore, as well as an up-and-coming adventure sport scene.
This is another wonderful place for a city tour , with several guided walks that explore the nuances of the community and the other surrounding neighborhoods. Once you’ve covered the basics, you can move on to some of the specific monuments and historical residences that pepper the area.
At the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum, you can learn more about the plight of students who were injured or killed during the protests, including 12-year-old Pieterson. The museum itself features firsthand accounts from the uprising and its aftermath.
Another key historical site is Mandela’s House , where Nelson Mandela lived during his time as a lawyer and early work as an activist. Although the original home burned down in 1988, this rebuilt structure is packed with insights into the Mandela family’s political work, as well as their personal lives.
Fans of creative projects and learning about other societies will love Credo Mutwa Cultural Village, which showcases the work of the renowned artist Credo Mutwa.
In addition to a beautiful collection of some of Mutwa’s most renowned pieces – including a variety of innovative sculptures -, you can learn more about his work as a healer and community storyteller. And, of course, you’ll be able to explore the village itself, a series of huts styled after indigenous African villages, all part of Mutwa’s mission to preserve and promote traditional cultures.
If you’re looking for a somewhat different side of the township, check out the activities at Soweto Towers. These striking structures, which were once part of a power station, now serve as an entertainment center and adrenaline-junky paradise.
Bungee-jumping is the big attraction here; with a 328-foot high suspension bridge as a starting point, you’re going to have a thrilling time during your leap.
You can also test your mettle in the opposite direction with a trip up the 82-foot high climbing wall, or test out the world’s tallest SCAD freefall – dropping 230 feet from a platform into the safety of a massive net. It’s the closest you can get to flying!
You can also try paintball or base jumping, or mix and match for an exciting day!
From contemplative spaces to cultural offerings to high-octane thrills, a day in Soweto is one of the best things to do in Johannesburg.

Back in the city, head to Nizamiye Mosque to learn more about the thriving Muslim culture in South Africa.
Opened in 2012, the building is an 80% to-scale replica of the acclaimed Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, Turkey.
It can host 6,000 people, and boasts stunning interior designs, including the intricate geometric designs that are classic hallmarks of Islamic art and architecture.
Don’t miss the Sacred Relics Gallery, which features beautiful photos of some of the religious artifacts relating to the history of the Muslim religion in the former Ottoman empire.
The mosque also hosts a variety of courses, from art courses to cooking classes to Quran study sessions.
You can also explore some of the other parts of the massive complex the building is housed in, including a marketplace, a restaurant, a bookstore, and a health clinic.
Regardless of your religious affiliation, a visit here is sure to be a moving experience.
8 – Consider the past at the Apartheid Museum
A perfect complement to the historical tours, a trip to the Apartheid Museum highlights the complexity and tragedy of the era.
Since it opened in 2001, the institution has used interactive exhibits and unflinching historical accounts to shed light on how the crisis unfolded.
Walk through the galleries outlining the rise and fall of apartheid, and the many ways in which it impacted South Africans.
Then pay a visit to the Mandela Exhibition to learn more about the former President’s critical role in fighting the regime, from his early days as a lawyer to his time as a political prisoner and, eventually, leader of the country.
There are also frequently rotating temporary exhibits that explore different aspects of the issue more in-depth.
This powerful museum is critical to understanding the country’s complex past – and the ways that it’s moving forward.

Though it may only last a few minutes, you’ll remember the experience forever!
55 – Dine at the best restaurants
Like all cosmopolitan cities, Johannesburg has an impressive array of restaurants for visitors to enjoy.
Whatever your dietary needs or culinary palate, you can find a world-class dining establishment in town.
For some authentic South African dishes in an elegant setting, try DW Eleven-13 , which offers a rotating course selection with locally sourced ingredients.
If you like a little bit of art with your meal, swing by Marble , where the beautiful designs by local creatives are only matched by the delicious meals from the wood-fired grill.
And if you want something trendy, have a meal at The Living Room , which offers fresh and fabulous food, cocktails, and smoothies.
From local institutions to high-end eateries, there are plenty of great options for a meal.
56 – Get dazzled by the Wits Planetarium
All these wonderful attractions might have you seeing stars, but you can also see them more literally at the Wits Planetarium .
Located on the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg campus, this stunning space is full of interactive exhibits celebrating the universe.
In addition to a variety of innovative shows, the planetarium also hosts educational sessions for students and the general public alike.
It’s one of the best things to do in Johannesburg if you love science, nature, or beautiful views.
57 – Cheer for the rugby teams at Ellis Park Stadium
Rugby lovers will do well to add Ellis Park Stadium to their itinerary.
This massive complex is home to two acclaimed teams – the Golden Lions (who play domestically) and the Lions (who play internationally) -, and has hosted players from all over the world.
It is perhaps best known as the playing ground for the 1995 Rugby World Cup, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Check out a match and enjoy the atmosphere at this local institution.
58 – Live it up at the best casinos
Whether you like to gamble or just want to enjoy a variety of fun activities in one convenient location, it’s well worth checking out the many excellent casinos around town.
The Emerald Resort & Casino sits along the beautiful Vaal River, and offers great natural amenities to go with its gaming options. Relax at the spa, splash around the on-site waterpark, play a round of mini-golf, or go on a game drive between rounds of slots and blackjack.
At Montecasino , you can enjoy live theater and new movies in equal measure, plus a variety of specialty shops, fine dining, and even a bowling alley, all in a charming recreation of an Italian village.
If circuses are more your thing, head to Carnival City , which boasts an impressive array of activities for kids. While the adults test out the tables, younger travelers can enjoy go-karting, arcade games, and more, all in a festive carnival setting.
Silverstar Casino offers everything from live musicv to laser tag, as well as a variety of top-notch conference facilities.
And for some wonderful decadence with easy access to the airport, check out Emperors Palace , which has a fun Roman aesthetic and some great offerings.
Check out the family-friendly Barnyard Theater , sample some treats at the candy shop, or just kick back and relax at one of the many restaurants.
All of these casinos also offer on-site hotels, so you can relax and unwind after a busy day of fun and games.
59 – See some neat vehicles at the James Hall Museum of Transport
Do you love carts and trains?
Want to see what makes the vehicles of the past tick?
Then don’t miss the James Hall Museum of Transport , which covers the history of all types of transit.
Their impressive exhibits span from the 1780s to the 1980s, and ranges from horse-drawn carts to fire engines, bikes, and steam-powered tractors.
While the artifacts are interesting in and of themselves, they also tell a larger story about the evolution of Johannesburg.
You can see some well-preserved rickshaws, which were used in the city until the 1960s, and electric trams that once served as public transit.
There’s also an impressive collection of bicycles, from tandems to penny farthings.
Whether you’re a hardcore vehicle fan or just generally interested in the history of the area, it’s well worth taking a trip to this fascinating museum.
60 – Try some beer tasting and wine tasting tours
With some finely-brewed beers and equally well-grown wines, Johannesburg and the surrounding areas offer lots of options for tasting tours.
If beers are more your speed, check out the Magic Magalies Craft Beer Tour, which takes you to three different breweries to sample some unique and innovative offerings.
Or try the Taste of Africa Tour, which combines beer samples with a delicious food tour featuring some regional delicacies.
If wine is more up your alley, try the WIne Tasting Experience, where you can partake in five variations from the famous Cape Town region.
It’s a delicious way to learn about the local culture, and you may even find a new favorite drink during the tour!
61 – Kick back and enjoy the best bars
Along with its great food and coffee scenes, Johannesburg has an excellent bar scene, and visitors can get a feel for the vibe of the city whilst trying some amazing drinks.
For a space that’s creative in both its drinks and clientele, try the bustling Crafter’s Rooftop Bar , which also offers psectacular sunset views.
If you want to fully immerse yourself in a busy local scene, visit Sir James van der Merwe , which features unique decorations and only operates on Wednesday evenings, making a trip there a true experience.
And if you really want to feel like a tourist – in a good way -, it’s well worth going to The Landmark , which bases its drinks and decor after iconic attractions in the area.
You can even try a pub crawl to get a better overall feel for the local nightlife scene.
The tour includes transportation, so you can sit back and relax as you head to some of the most avant-garde areas in the city, sampling beverages and learning about the continual evolution of the City of Gold.

Where to stay in Johannesburg?
The Hilton Sandton will have you in the lap of luxury, with great attractions nearby.
When you’re not taking the free shuttle to Nelson Mandela Square or visiting nearby sites from the Cradle of Humankind to the Aparthied Museum, you can relax and unwind at the spa and sauna, or stroll around the gardens.
You’ll love the views at the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff , almost as much as you’ll love the comprehensive wellness center, excellent restaurants, and easy access to such highlights as the Parkview Golf Club and the Johannesburg Zoo.
If you’d like a premium hotel experience that’s somewhat removed from the main activity of the city, check out MINT Hotel 84 on Katherine , which offers a pool, garden, and fitness center.
Roughly 15 minutes from the city center, it offers all the convenience of proximity without the busyness.
Or check out the MINT Express Melrose View , which offers a buffet breakfast, easy access to the airport, and charming suites with flat-screen TVs and kitchenettes.
With all the amenities of home and all the conveniences of a hotel, it offers a little bit of everything.
Book an airport transfer to get to these wonderful attractions that much quicker.

10 unusual date ideas in and around johannesburg.
Looking for a great date idea? We’ve unearthed 10 fun and unusual date ideas in and around Johannesburg.
1. CityROCK, Randburg
Climbing together is a great active date. Start off by booking an Intro Course (R250) and learn the ropes of how to climb. If, like me, you loved it, you’ll find yourself craving more and pushing harder to try new climbs and different level routes (each colour ‘rock’ represents a different level of difficulty). You have to trust your partner totally to keep you safe and have the freedom to climb, which is great for bonding. Plus, it’s sure to stir up some healthy competition between the two of you and once you are done you can refuel with a trip to one of the many great restaurants in Randburg .
2. Pretville, Hartbeespoort
This small 60s-Americana-themed town is perfect for snapping selfies with your other half. Originally a movie set, there are rooms and scenes set up all over with old cars and plenty of antiques thrown in too. Wander around, grab a milkshake from the very pink diner and be sure to watch a movie in the old theatre while you’re there. It’s normally an Afrikaans movie, but there are subtitles. Open on weekends and public holidays only.
3. Free Joburg Walking Tour, Braamfontein
Starting at Park Station, this free walking tour is a great way to get to know the CBD. Choose to roam Braamfontein (15:30 every day) or the City Centre Tour (at 10:30 and 13:00 every day). You’ll take in the large open-air museum in the corporate mining district, see historical landmarks, such as the Chancellor House where Mandela worked as a lawyer in his younger days, the Beautiful Victorian Style Post Office or the buzzing Diagonal Street where you can buy your partner a corn on the cob or grab a beer in the old bar after the tour. (Just know, that even though it is free, a tip is normally granted at the end of the tour).
4. Copperlake Pub Crawl, Fourways
R180 per person, copperlake.co.za
Inside the Copperlake Brewing Company. Photograph by Chris Davies.
If you’d rather get to know each other over a drink or five, why not get social on this party bus pub crawl? Every Friday, the party bus departs from Copperlake Brewery in Broadacres at 19:00 and it stops at three of Fourways’ favourite craft pubs and restaurants in Fourways until 12:30 am, so you can hop on and off at any time. The price includes a complimentary Copperlake Beer and Cooler onboard and stops at Beerhouse and Hogshead in Douglasdale.
5. Cheese fondue, Linden
R200 for two, Cheese Gourmet Whats more romantic than sharing? This cosy little cheese cafe in Linden is an intimate restaurant and their traditional Swiss cheese fondue made with melted emmenthal and gruyere is bound to melt any heart. Served with chunky bread this is a casual dinner with a difference.
6. Gin Tasting, Maboneng
While we’re on the subject of drinks, why not learn a little something while you do it? Only open on Saturdays and Sundays, tour The Tasting Room at Time Anchor Distillery and see how the grain-based spirits are made. People attending the tasting will arrive and be seated, get an introduction to Time Anchor Distillery followed by tasting of up to three of their Craft Gins. This is followed by a craft cocktail or G&T and a further discussion around the fascinating world of craft distilleries. You should know that The Tasting Room Anchor Distillery is one of the best Maboneng Restaurants.
7. Or take a tuk-tuk
Going on a dinner date? How about skipping the average Uber ride and opt for something a little more exotic instead? The brightly coloured vessels of e-tuktuk is now on hand to whisk you about town and they go as far as Parkhurst, Greenside and to Park Station in the inner city . They are also more eco-friendly and fuel-efficient.
8. Hartbeespoort Cable Car, Hartbeespoort
I must admit, I never made a big effort to go up this cable car, but when I finally found myself doing it, the views really did impress and lunch from this vantage point is pretty perfect. The cable car provides panoramic views of the Magaliesberg and the dam and, if it’s your birthday, entry is free.
9. Freakshakes, Parkhurst
Want an excuse to get closer? Treat yo’selves to a decadent milkshake from one of the Parkhurst restaurants that’s best shared. Choose from three mouthwatering creations: a pink candy-filled strawberry shake topped with candy floss, a Belgian chocolate overdose topped with roasted marshmallows, and the salted caramel delight filled with creme brûlée.
10. Rooftop Salsa, Maboneng
Every Sunday from 2-7pm at 28 Auret Street near Maboneng you can salsa with pros. There’s a great mix of regulars – young and old folks, locals and foreigners. The atmosphere is great and the Afro-Cuban tunes will have you both swinging. Expect impromptu dance lessons, line dances and the perfect way to kiss the weekend goodbye.

Once a prison, this site now provides insightful information about South Africa’s history. Representing the brutal treatment of political prisoners and criminals at that time, this erstwhile prison features rather provocative exhibits at its museums like Number Four, Women’s Gaol, and Old Fort. These former prisoners even included Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi at that time. Image Source This “living museum” is one of the most queer, yet exciting sites in Johannesburg. One of the best Johannesburg museums and attractions , it houses an impressive collection of 19th and 20th-century Victorian furniture, art, and common household items that all tell tales of the how this culture and heritage is influencing Johannesburg even today. 9 Best Things To Do In Johannesburg, South Africa
J o’burg, or Jozi as locals affectionately call it, or sometimes E’Goli or the “City of Gold” because of its historical links to gold mining — how much do you know about the city of Johannesburg? Located in the eastern part of the country, Johannesburg is a massive city, the largest in South Africa. It is South Africa’s financial center, a city that has shaped the country’s history and politics, and one that is filled with treasures.
Often overlooked in favor of other more picturesque parts of South Africa, Johannesburg is often just a stopover for international tourists, being home to O.R. Tambo International Airport, the busiest airport on the African continent. Often the jumping-off point for a safari and mostly enjoyed on a quick layover, Johannesburg is a city of contrasts. On one hand, there’s the poverty and struggles of Soweto, and on the other, there are the glitzy skyscrapers and “super homes” of Sandton, which is often referred to as Africa’s richest square mile. Despite its complicated past, the City of Gold has a lot to offer tourists.
There’s a lot to see, do, and learn here, much more than you may imagine. Read on for my top tips for things to do in Johannesburg.
1. The City Center
A great way to start your Johannesburg experience is by heading into the city center, which is full of historic buildings. The city’s reputation can make it a bit intimidating for solo travel, so a good option for getting a feel for South Africa’s biggest and richest city is by joining the safety and security of a guided walking tour . Visit Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo set up South Africa’s first black-owned law firm. Get a 360-degree view of Johannesburg from the Carlton Centre, a 50-story skyscraper located in central Johannesburg. Admire heritage buildings on historic Main Street. Visit the Workers Museum and Museum Africa. Get a feel for the hustle and bustle of the people, lifestyle, and culture of this complex city.
2. Constitution Hill
If you’re visiting South Africa, spend some time learning about apartheid — a brutal period of national segregation that lasted 43 years. A visit to Constitution Hill will give you a better understanding of this troubled era.
Constitution Hill was once a notorious complex of prisons, known as “The Fort,” where political activists and ordinary citizens alike were incarcerated throughout the apartheid era. Thousands of men and women — of all races, ages, social statuses, and political beliefs, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi — were imprisoned and tortured here.
Constitution Hill overlooks the city and has been transformed into beautiful, thought-provoking museums focussing on the promotion of human rights. Some interesting exhibits include Number Four Museum (once male prisoner cells), the Old Fort Museum (where the whites-only prison was located), and the Women’s Gaol Museum. You’ll also have the opportunity to enter the still-functioning High Court, if no proceedings are in progress.
Visiting Constitution Hill will give you deeper insights into South Africa’s history and you should pair your visit with a tour of the Apartheid Museum, whose immersive exhibits explore this tragic time in more depth.
3. The Apartheid Museum
The Apartheid Museum will give you glimpses of apartheid, the laws of segregation according to racial groups, and South Africa’s painful journey to freedom.
On arrival, you’ll receive an entry ticket that will randomly classify you as white or non-white and you may only enter through the gate indicated for the race you have been allocated. That’s just to give you a taste of the reality of the past and set the atmosphere for the rest of your visit.
There are two main exhibitions in the Apartheid Museum , The Permanent Exhibition and The Mandela Exhibition, as well as rotating temporary exhibits that explore different aspects of the issue more in depth. The permanent exhibition takes you through some of the painful events of South Africa’s struggle for liberation. The Mandela Exhibition gives you an opportunity to learn about the leading statesman who was at the forefront of the country’s struggle against apartheid, including his time as a prisoner for 27 years.
4. Soweto Township
About 12 miles from Jo’burg center, Soweto is the largest township in South Africa with around 1.3 million inhabitants. During the apartheid regime, Soweto was at the heart of the movement to end apartheid and was a no-go area for tourists. More recently, the South African government has focussed on developing tourism in Soweto, making it a safe, dynamic, and interesting place to visit with some wonderful historical areas to explore, as well as an up-and-coming adventure sports scene.
The best way to experience Soweto is on a guided tour with someone who’ll take you to the main landmarks and tell you about their relevance, including Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners (Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu).
If you’re looking for a different side of the township, check out the activities at Soweto Towers. These striking structures, which were once part of a power station, now serve as an entertainment center and adrenaline-junky paradise. Bungee jumping, from a 328-foot-high suspension bridge, is the big attraction here. You can also try paintball or base jumping.
5. Maboneng Precinct
Another fun thing to do in Johannesburg is take a tour of the “super cool” Maboneng Precinct. Once a rundown part of town, a renovation project has turned it into an up-and-coming neighborhood where you’ll find great restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques, and art galleries. Maboneng is a Sesotho word meaning “place of lights,” and the name perfectly describes the district. It is Johannesburg’s downtown fashion corner, buzzing lifestyle playground, and one of the city’s major creative hubs. Maboneng is filled with remarkable works of art, beautiful murals, and colorful graffiti.
6. The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens
If you’re looking for something a little more “natural,” you’ll find plenty to enjoy at the Botanical Gardens. There are nine national botanical gardens in South Africa, and the Walter Sisulu , with its 200 acres of greenery and seven gardens of local and international plants, is one of them.
Highlights include the Witpoortjie Waterfall, Birds and Butterfly Garden, Fern Trail, Children’s Garden, Herb Garden, and the impressive array of desert plants in the Succulent Garden. If you’re a theater fan, spend some time in the Shakespeare Garden, which is filled with plants and herbs that were featured in the bard’s plays. The gardens are a great place to unwind and enjoy a bit of nature in the heart of the city.
7. Art Galleries
Located in Joubert Park, Johannesburg Art Gallery is one of the best art spots to visit in Johannesburg. With an impressive collection of art, including prints that date back to the 15th century, it features works of artists such as Dali and Picasso, and a section dedicated to local artists as well. Then, make your way over to the Wits Art Museum . Located on the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg campus, the Wits Art Museum houses 15,000 works spanning from the 19th century to the modern day.
Another excellent art venue in the city is the Goodman Gallery which focuses specifically on art with a social justice component. Its exhibits highlight emerging artists who are regarded as having helped shape the landscape of contemporary art in South Africa.
8. Food Tours
Johannesburg is often said to be the foodie capital of South Africa, but if you want to go for something super-traditional, opt for a typical African meal in Soweto, Yeoville, or Maboneng.
South Africa’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its food and one of the coolest things to do in Johannesburg is to enjoy the cuisine. Local delicacies can include chicken neck, chicken feet, pigs’ trotters, and tripe, all accompanied by the unmissable paap — a ground-maize dish quite similar to polenta. Check out the Taste of Africa food tour which will get you sampling a variety of Pan-African restaurants in the thriving Yeoville neighborhood.
Had enough art, culture, or food and want to stretch your legs — how about teeing off at one of the best golf courses in Johannesburg? The Royal Johannesburg Golf Club , which has been running since 1890, offers two championship-level courses. At the Bryanston Country Club , there are a variety of greens for people of all skill levels, complete with plenty of entertaining water hazards. The links at Observatory Golf Course feature challenging holes and are committed to making the sport affordable for average individuals.
Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, vibrant nightlife, great restaurants, or renowned cultural institutions, Johannesburg boasts a rich history and culture with museums, galleries, and historical sites to explore. A visit to Johannesburg is bound to make your stay in South Africa a memorable one.

Terry Anderson, Ohio journalist held hostage nearly seven years in Lebanon, dead at 76
Terry Anderson, a U.S. journalist who was held captive by Islamist militants for almost seven years in Lebanon and came to symbolize the plight of Western hostages during the country's 1975-1990 civil war, died on Sunday at age 76, his daughter said in a statement.
The former chief Middle East correspondent for The Associated Press, who was the longest held hostage of the scores of Westerners abducted in Lebanon, died at his home in Greenwood Lake, New York, said his daughter Sulome Anderson, who was born three months after he was seized. No cause of death was given.
Kept in barely-lit cells by mostly Shi'ite Muslim groups in what was known as The Hostage Crisis, and chained by his hands and feet and blindfolded much of the time, the former Marine later recalled that he "almost went insane" and that only his Roman Catholic faith prevented him from taking his life before he was freed in December 1991.
"Though my father's life was marked by extreme suffering during his time as a hostage in captivity, he found a quiet, comfortable peace in recent years. I know he would choose to be remembered not by his very worst experience, but through his humanitarian work with the Vietnam Children's Fund, the Committee to Protect Journalists, homeless veterans and many other incredible causes," Sulome Anderson said.
The family will take some time to organize a memorial, she said.
Anderson's ordeal began in Beirut on the morning of March 16, 1985, after he played a round of tennis. A green Mercedes sedan with curtains over the rear window pulled up, three gunmen jumped out and dragged Anderson, still dressed in shorts, into the car.
The pro-Iran Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, saying it was part of "continuing operations against Americans." The abductors demanded freedom for Shi'ite Muslims jailed in Kuwait for bomb attacks against the U.S. and French embassies there.
It was the start of a nightmare for Anderson that would last six years and nine months during which he was stuck in cells under the rubble-strewn streets of Beirut and elsewhere, often badly fed and sleeping on a thin, dirty mattress on a concrete floor.
During captivity, both his father and brother would die of cancer and he would not see his daughter Sulome until she was six years old.
"What kept me going?" he asked aloud shortly after release. "My companions. I was lucky to have people with me most of the time. My faith, stubbornness. You do what you have to. You wake up every day, summon up the energy from somewhere. You think you haven't got it and you get through the day and you do it. Day after day after day."
Other hostages described Anderson as tough and active in captivity, learning French and Arabic and exercising regularly.
However, they also told of him banging his head against a wall until he bled in frustration at beatings, isolation, false hopes and the feeling of being neglected by the outside world.
"There is a limit of how long we can last and some of us are approaching the limit very badly," Anderson said in a videotape released by his captors in December 1987.
Marcel Fontaine, a French diplomat who was released in May 1988 after three years of captivity, recalled the time cell mate Anderson thought freedom was near because he was allowed to see the sun and eat a hamburger.
In April 1987 Anderson was given a suit of clothes that his captors had made for him. "He wore it every day," Fontaine said.
A week later, however, Anderson's captors took the suit back, leaving him in despair and certain he was forgotten, Fontaine said.
Scores of journalist groups, governments and individuals over the years called for Anderson's release and his Oct. 27 birthday became an unofficial U.S. memorial day for hostages.
Anderson said he considered killing himself several times but rejected it. He relied heavily on his faith, which he said he had renewed six months before being kidnapped.
"I must have read the Bible 50 times from start to finish," he said. "It was an enormous help to me."
His sister, Peggy Say, who died in 2015, was his fiercest advocate during captivity.
She worked tirelessly for her brother's freedom. She visited Arab and European capitals, lobbied the Pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury and every U.S. official and politician available.
Under pressure from the media and the U.S. hostages' families, the Reagan administration negotiated a secret and illegal deal in the mid-1980s to facilitate arms sales to Iran in return for the release of American hostages. But the deal, known as the Iran–Contra affair, failed to gain freedom for any of the hostages.
Born Oct. 27, 1947, in Lorain, Ohio, Anderson grew up in Batavia, New York. He graduated from Iowa State University and spent six years in the Marine Corps, mostly as a journalist.
He worked for the AP in Detroit, Louisville, New York, Tokyo, Johannesburg and then Beirut, where he first went to cover the Israeli invasion in 1982.
In that war-torn city, he fell in love with Lebanese woman Madeleine Bassil, who was his fiance and pregnant with their daughter Sulome when he was snatched.
He is survived by his daughters Sulome and Gabrielle, his sister Judy and brother Jack, and by Bassil, whom Sulome Anderson called "his ex-wife and best friend."
Anderson and fellow hostages developed a system of communication by tapping on walls between their cells. Always the journalist, Anderson passed on news of the outside world he had picked up during captivity to Church of England envoy Terry Waite, being held hostage in an adjacent room in September 1990 after years of solitary confinement.
"Then the world news: the Berlin Wall's falling, communism's demise in eastern Europe, free elections in the Soviet Union, work toward multiracial government in South Africa. All the incredible things that have happened since he was taken nearly three years ago. He thought I was crazy," Anderson wrote in his 1993 book "Den of Lions."
After his release, Anderson taught journalism at Columbia University in New York, Ohio University, the University of Kentucky and the University of Florida until he retired in 2015.
Among businesses he invested in were a horse ranch in Ohio, and a restaurant. He unsuccessfully ran for the Ohio state Senate as a Democrat in 2004 and sued Iran in federal court for his abduction, winning a multimillion-dollar settlement in 2002.

Terry Anderson, US journalist held hostage nearly 7 years in Lebanon, dead at 76
Terry Anderson, an American journalist who was held captive by Islamist militants for almost seven years in Lebanon and came to symbolize the plight of Western hostages during the country's 1975-1990 civil war, died Sunday at age 76, his daughter said in a statement.
The former chief Middle East correspondent for The Associated Press, who was the longest-held hostage of the scores of Westerners abducted in Lebanon, died at his home in Greenwood Lake, New York, said his daughter Sulome Anderson , who was born three months after he was seized. No cause of death was given.
Kept in barely lit cells by mostly Shi'ite Muslim groups in what was known as the hostage crisis and chained by his hands and feet and blindfolded much of the time, the former Marine later recalled that he "almost went insane" and that only his Roman Catholic faith prevented him from taking his life before he was freed in December 1991.
"Though my father's life was marked by extreme suffering during his time as a hostage in captivity, he found a quiet, comfortable peace in recent years. I know he would choose to be remembered not by his very worst experience, but through his humanitarian work with the Vietnam Children's Fund, the Committee to Protect Journalists , homeless veterans and many other incredible causes," Sulome Anderson said.

The pro-Iran group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, saying it was part of "continuing operations against Americans." The abductors demanded freedom for Shi'ite Muslims jailed in Kuwait for bomb attacks against the U.S. and French embassies there.
It was the start of a nightmare for Anderson that would last six years and nine months during which he was stuck in cells under the rubble-strewn streets of Beirut and elsewhere, often poorly fed and sleeping on a thin, dirty mattress on a concrete floor.
During his captivity, his father and brother would die of cancer, and he would not see his daughter Sulome until she was 6 years old.
But they also told of him banging his head against a wall until he bled in frustration at beatings, isolation, false hopes and the feeling of being neglected by the outside world.

"There is a limit of how long we can last, and some of us are approaching the limit very badly," Anderson said in a videotape released by his captors in December 1987.
Marcel Fontaine, a French diplomat who was released in May 1988 after three years of captivity, recalled the time cellmate Anderson thought freedom was near because he was allowed to see the sun and eat a hamburger.
In April 1987, Anderson was given a suit of clothes his captors had made for him. "He wore it every day," Fontaine said. A week later, however, Anderson's captors took the suit back, leaving him in despair and certain he was forgotten, Fontaine said.

Scores of journalist groups, governments and individuals over the years called for Anderson's release, and his Oct. 27 birthday became an unofficial U.S. memorial day for hostages.
Anderson said he considered killing himself several times but rejected the notion. He relied heavily on his faith, which he said he had renewed six months before being kidnapped.
"I must have read the Bible 50 times from start to finish," he said. "It was an enormous help to me."
