Striking American landscapes, quirky antique stores, fabulous hikes and some of the best bakeries you’ll ever find. Welcome to New York State ! From one end to the other, the Empire State is crammed with outdoor adventures, cool art, great food and friendly people.

Not sure where to start? Check out these ten top New York State locations and you won’t be disappointed.

1. Hudson, NY

Best for small-town charm

In Columbia County, about 45 minutes from the state capital of Albany, the quaint city of Hudson overflows with vintage storefronts and small-town charm. The strip along Warren Street is known for its fine collection of boutique shops housed in historic buildings, each with a unique twist. Start with Spotty Dog Books and Ales , a not-so-average bookstore with a full bar inside.

Peppered throughout the neighborhood are cute antique shops and a variety of cafes and coffee shops, including Supernatural Coffee + Bakery , home to the best lavender honey latte on the strip.

Outside town are some of the best hiking trails in the Hudson Valley, including the route through the High Falls Conservation Area , a moderate 1.5-mile hike through rocky terrain, with a stunning waterfall at the end.

For accommodations, The Maker is an 11-room luxury boutique hotel with themed rooms designed to reflect the area's creative population of artists and writers, decorated with antique pieces and bits of history throughout each space. The cafe serves flakey sweet pastries such as twice-baked pistachio croissants from  Bartlett House.

The  Amelia Hotel , about two blocks from Warren Street, is another fantastic option, with a heated outdoor pool, huge soaking tubs, a beautiful lounge and complimentary beverages and baked goods.

Our favorite New York historic parks and monuments

Main Street in Beacon, New York, with the mountains in the distance

2. Beacon, NY

Best for fine art and fine dining

A stop at the  Dia: Beacon gallery is a must when day-tripping to Beacon, NY. This light-filled, 300,000 sq ft space in a converted factory hosts large-scale conceptual art by Gerard Richter, Louise Bourgeois and Richard Serra. Storm King Art Center , a 500-acre outdoor sculpture garden, is a short drive away, bringing together fine art and fresh air.

When you've had your fill of creativity, there are plenty of ways to fill your stomach. The most charming place to eat is  Roundhouse , a farm-to-table restaurant overlooking a waterfall. Inventive dishes such as Spicy Lobster Mac n’ Cheese pair nicely with a signature cocktail or a glass of wine. After your meal, stroll up the street to the trendy  HÅKAN Chocolatier  for artisanal chocolate that is well worth the trip. For lunch, dinner or drinks, head to Max's on Main for pub food and local beer.

Planning tip: Located about 70 miles north of New York City, Beacon is easily reached by car (a 90-minute drive) or it's a two-hour ride on the Metro-North Railroad. Dia: Beacon and Main Street are just a 10-minute walk from the train station, making this an easy car-free trip.

A woman sitting on the edge of a cliff on top of Overlook Mountain in the Catskills in Woodstock, NY, on a sunny summer day

3. Woodstock, NY

Best for indie boutiques and the outdoors

Although the legendary 1969 music festival actually took place on a dairy farm near the village of Bethel, tie-dye still abounds in Woodstock, a town filled with independent art and the bounteous nature of Catskill Park . It's the perfect destination to get back to the great outdoors – take a hike up Overlook Mountain and enjoy expansive vistas of red spruces, balsam fir trees and red oaks.

A ban on chain stores keeps this town feeling free-spirited. Tinker Street, Woodstock’s main drag, entices travelers with unique gift stores and cafes. You'll find a plethora of restaurant choices in town, too, but for an extra special breakfast, you’ll want to take a 20-minute drive to the Phoenicia Diner , an elevated restaurant known for its unbelievable pancakes. It even has its own cookbook and take-home pancake mix should you miss these treats when you return to NYC.

The top 5 road trips in New York State

A student walks next to large buildings on the campus of Cornell University

Best for "gorges" hiking and a college vibe

When it comes to describing this Finger Lakes gem, the slightly corny (but accurate) slogan “Ithaca is gorges” couldn't be more on point. You'll find a wide variety of hiking trails here, from easy to challenging, and countless waterfalls at sites such as Taughannock Falls State Park , Ithaca Falls, Buttermilk Falls State Park and  Robert H. Treman State Park , where there's a swimming hole next to the waterfall in the summer months.

Treetops – a six-story treehouse behind the Cayuga Nature Center – is an eye-catching sight and travelers of all ages can play inside and explore. There's also a farmer's market full of international foodie treats in addition to lots of fresh local produce.

Grab a bite to eat at College Town Bagels , and head to Cornell University 's campus to visit the AD White Library – a stunning space with more than 90,000 books, ceiling-high bookshelves and intricately designed metal walkaways.

If you’re looking for a cozy, modern, centrally located hotel, Hotel Ithaca is affordable and within walking distance of some great things to do. For something a little more rustic, check out Firelight Camps ; it’s right near Buttermilk Falls, with comfortable full-size beds (and in some cases electricity and heat) in safari-style tents in the woods.

Planning tip: Buses from Greyhound and other companies connect Ithaca to NYC in around five hours. It's easier and faster to fly into Ithaca Tompkins International Airport , or you can drive in just over four hours.

A Black family jumping over the waves off the shore of Montauk

5. The Hamptons

Best for beaches and great eats

If you’re into food, then the  Hamptons needs to be on your list. Thanks to countless farm stands, gourmet markets and seafood shops with fresh, high-quality goods, you'll always be well-fed in this affluent section of Long Island .

Each area of the Hamptons has something unique to offer, from Montauk with its long beach, state park and lighthouse to Bridgehampton with its famous shops – seek out Bridgehampton Candy Kitchen, renowned for its ripe-banana ice cream – and incredible restaurants, such as Elaia Estiatorio , known for its fresh fish and homemade spreads.

Montauk is low-key and easygoing, at the tip of the Hamptons, so you can see all of the south fork while traveling here. In town, make sure to visit Duryea's restaurant in the summer, and try your best to time it for sunset – the views are incredible, and staff provide fresh, clean blankets for snuggling up as the night progresses and cools down. If you're hungry, try their incredible lobster Cobb salad, loaded with lobster meat.

Planning tip: To stay, check out the Montauk Beach House . The rooms are beautifully decorated with giant mirrors, soaking tubs and comfy beds, while the common area has a bar and two huge pools, all within walking distance of the beach.

Empty wooden chairs by lake with mountain reflection at Lake Placid, NY

6. Lake Placid

Best for winter fun

Lake Placid, located in the lovely Adirondacks , is an absolute blast, especially in the winter. This was the site of the 1980 Winter Olympics, and the village still holds onto those ties in some really unique ways – for example, you can ride in a bobsled, spouting out lines from the movie Cool Runnings  as you race down the icy track at top speeds. There's also a mountain coaster that goes along a former bobsled trail, currently the longest of its kind in North America.

Visitors can ride the  Cloudsplitter Gondola to the top of an active ski jump in the Whiteface ski area and watch future Olympian hopefuls practicing at terrifying heights. Check out the tobogganing shoot before heading over to Mirror Lake for ice skating.

Right across the street is the Dancing Bear , a lovely breakfast spot located inside the High Peaks Resort.  Mirror Lake Inn has amazing rooms and a gorgeous indoor pool with a grotto and a hot tub big enough to fit multiple groups of people, so you can enjoy it without being on top of each other. The big new arrival in town is the Grand Adirondack Hotel , a stylish revamp of a historic Main Street hotel.

Planning tip: A few flights run from Boston and New York's JFK airport to Adirondack Regional Airport , 17 miles northwest of Lake Placid, but most visitors drive (NYC is five hours away). Alternatively, take the Amtrak train to Westport, connecting to a bus to Lake Placid.

A statue of Nike of Samothrace presides over the conservatory at the Martin House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, in Buffalo

Best for sports fans and spicy wings

Now there might be a little bias here: Buffalo is my hometown, and to say I love it is an understatement. Located in the western part of the state, the “city of good neighbors” went through a serious glow-up phase over the last 10 years, and it's filled with historic architecture, such as Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House and the art deco Buffalo Central Terminal.

Go zip-lining over the city at Buffalo Riverworks , or enjoy margaritas at Casa Azul or Breezy Burrito Bar in Elmwood Village, which is filled with local boutique shops and hosts one of the best farmers markets in the area – the Elmwood Village Farmers' Market , held on Saturdays on Bidwell Parkway. Formerly a rundown waterfront, the Canalside district has ice bikes to rent in the winter and a bike ferry that goes to the outer harbor, where you can see the Buffalo Main Lighthouse.

If you’re here in the fall, definitely try to grab tickets to a Buffalo Bills NFL game. The tailgate party is an experience like no other, and the Bills' fanbase is known for taking tailgating a little too far…in the best way. It's unclear who started the whole tradition of breaking tables, but it’s become so popular that they even do a baby-friendly version. During a wildcard Bills game in Houston, folding tables were completely sold out at Walmart stores in town!

The food in Buffalo is unbelievable. Try Toutant for gourmet southern cuisine, Remington Tavern and Seafood Exchange for fresh seafood, East Aurora's Bar-Bill and Amherst's Wingnutz for wings, and Jay's Artisan Pizzeria and La Nova for pizzas. For hotels, be sure to check out the Curtiss Hotel , which has an incredible pool and rooftop bar.

Detour: While you're in Buffalo, it makes sense to tack on a detour to Niagara Falls . The famous cascade is less than an hour's drive north from downtown Buffalo.

Pink and gold sunset over Canandaigua Lake

8. Canandaigua

Best for laid-back lake views

The fourth-largest of the Finger Lakes , Canandaigua is picturesque and peaceful. The lakefront city of Canandaigua is filled with charm and entertainment, with a main strip full of pastel Queen Anne homes, stone churches and storefronts showcasing weathered vintage signage.

I highly recommend staying at Lake House Canandaigua  – it’s the perfect way to enjoy beautiful views of the lake, within walking distance of the colorful boathouses at the Canandaigua City Pier. In summer, check out Roseland Wake Park to learn a new water sport…minus the boat.

For food, Rio Tomatlan has the most delicious tacos and guacamole, as well as amazing cocktails like the Cachonda, made with tequila, triple sec, house-made hibiscus syrup and freshly squeezed lime juice – ask for it spicy!

Be sure to stop by Cheshire Farms Creamery to grab a box of cinnamon buns to go (pop them in the trunk of your car so you don’t eat them all on the way home). The creamery is also known for its ice cream, featuring natural flavors such as fresh Concord grape, made from grapes harvested here in the fall.

An historic footbridge and Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, NY

9. Sleepy Hollow

Best for a spooky vibe

Sleepy Hollow, about an hour from New York City, is the perfect place to visit in the fall. The town has a spooky tie to Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and fully embraces the lore of this creepy tale – so much so that the town changed its name from North Tarrytown in the late 1990s.

Explore the Old Dutch Church, visit the Headless Horseman Bridge and grab a photo with the Headless Horseman statue before delving into more of what the area has to offer, such as the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse, once a half-mile offshore but accessible today via a footbridge.

I highly recommend staying at the Tarrytown House Estate , ideally in the King's Mansion. Its rooms are amazing, covered in art, with a terrace leading out to views of the Hudson (and the lights of New York City on a clear night). Grab dinner at the hotel's Cantonese and pan-Asian restaurant, Goosefeather , owned by celebrity chef Dale Talde.

Planning tip: Tarrytown Station has regular train connections with NYC via the Hudson Line of the Metro-North Railroad, a journey of less than an hour.

Woman paddling kayak, Adirondacks, Lake George, New York, United States

10. Lake George

Best for fall colors

Located in the vast Adirondacks region, Lake George is such a special place, especially in the fall, when the region overflows with brightly colored red, orange and yellow foliage. Enjoy the kitschy souvenir shops that dot the main strip through downtown, or grab a scoop (or two) at the aptly named Scoop’s Ice Cream Parlor.

You can’t go wrong at any of the town’s restaurants. Cate's Italian Garden has classics such as fried calamari and lasagna, the Algonquin Restaurant (just north at Bolton Landing) has a killer lobster roll, and the Log Jam has generous portions of pub-style comfort food, steak and lamb chops.

The Sagamore Hotel is the place to stay, no competition. The hotel is just stunning, with gorgeous views, especially if you splurge for a suite with a terrace. You can spend all night on that balcony, overlooking views of Lake George that seriously feel like Hawaii, not New York. Amenities aren't bad either, including two outdoor pools, an indoor pool, a hot tub and easy access to Lake George, where you can float on inner tubes or go for a swim.

Detour: Drive a little off the beaten path to find Adirondack ATV Tours , close to the town of Whitehall, where you can head out with a group on an ATV tour, and go racing through mud, dirt and hills and over jumps – after a safety briefing, of course.

Experience The Met's history-making Harlem Renaissance exhibition

11.  Experience The Met's history-making Harlem Renaissance exhibition

The Harlem Renaissance had an indisputable impact on American culture, but chances are that you probably didn’t spend much time learning about it in school. That’s because, even though it shaped global literature, music, and art, Black Americans’ historical contributions have been systematically erased or gone unacknowledged for centuries.

A groundbreaking exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art hopes to be a part of rectifying the erasure and celebrating Black artists and intellectuals.

"The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism"  presents 160 works by Black artists from the Harlem Renaissance and delves into many different aspects of the movement, mostly through the lens of paintings and sculpture.  You can get your tickets   here .

Have "Giant" conversations at the Brooklyn Museum

12.  Have "Giant" conversations at the Brooklyn Museum

"Giants," the Brooklyn Museum's latest exhibition, fits its name in many facets. First of all, the show relies on the art collection of two titans in the music industry, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean). Much of the artwork itself is massive, taking over major swaths of the museum. The exhibition features artists who have made and continue to make a significant impact on the art world and contemporary culture.

Finally, and most importantly, the exhibit encourages big conversations that celebrate Blackness, critique society, and imagine a collective future. " Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys " runs through July 7, 2024. The show features 98 artworks by Black American, African, and African diasporic artists including Gordon Parks, Kehinde Wiley, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mickalene Thomas, Hassan Hajjaj, Barkley L. Hendricks, Lorna Simpson, and Amy Sherald.

Have a laugh at Second City

13.  Have a laugh at Second City

After months of anticipation and some delays, it’s  actually  official this time—Second City, Chicago’s prestigious comedy club that is responsible for incubating talent like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Steve Carrell, just opened the doors of its New York location.

The new site of  Second City , located at 64 N. 9th St. in Williamsburg, is less of a traditional comedy club than it is a sort of small campus for comedy aficionados. The 12,000-square-foot, two-floor complex includes two cabaret-style live theaters, a training center charged with raising the next generation of iconic comedians, and a restaurant bar called The Bentwood.

Witness the historic reopening of Brooklyn Paramount

14.  Witness the historic reopening of Brooklyn Paramount

Brooklyn Paramount will officially reopen on March 27, with a new capacity of 2,7000 guests following a multi-million dollar renovation of the 100-year-old space.

The venue originally opened in 1928, as the world’s first theater to show talking movies and a hotspot for world-famous performers. Now, for the first time in 60 years, the venue will be a hub for live music again.   Here's more info   on upcoming shows tickets.

Visit the Climate Museum

15.  Visit the Climate Museum

Explore " The End of Fossil Fuel ," the latest pop-up from the NYC Climate Museum. It's free to visit in Soho and offers a bevy of eye-opening activities for all ages.

Inside the gallery, a collection of maps will put climate change issues into perspective, alongside text panels about the history of the fossil fuel industry. The exhibits trace the origins of the climate and inequality crises and how we got to where we are today. Other activations include a sticker wall where visitors commit to specific climate actions and a kids' corner with books and drawing materials.

Find the pop-up at 105 Wooster Street in Soho through April 30. The museum is free to visit and open to all. It's open Wednesdays-Sundays from 1-6pm.

Celebrate The Morgan's birthday

16.  Celebrate The Morgan's birthday

There’s a lot of good to see at this Manhattan subway stop.

Two years after opening the subterranean bar  Nothing Really Matters , hospitality professional Adrien Gallo continues building his subway station empire, opening  See No Evil Pizza  last week on the concourse level of the downtown-bound 1 train station at 50th Street and Broadway—a space that once housed a Dunkin’.  It joins his  Tiny Dancer Coffee  on the same concourse.

“I basically transformed a subway station that was super neglected to a destination spot in the middle of Times Square,” Gallo tells  Time Out New York .

Find See No Evil Pizza is located on the concourse level of the downtown-bound 1 train station at 50th Street and Broadway. It is open for pop-ins and  Resy reservations  Monday-Saturday from 5pm-midnight.

Make a hat for the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival

19.  Make a hat for the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival

The Easter Bonnet Parade & Festival is one of the highlights of Easter in NYC.

This parade is all about the hats—lavishly decorated, from the exquisite to the outlandish. Anyone is welcome to join, just show up near  St. Patrick’s Cathedral   at 10am on Easter Sunday to watch or saunter with the group up Fifth Avenue. The free tradition dates back to the 1870s, so you might even see some participants in period costumes. But the highlight is the elaborate bonnets, some of which are truly over-the-top.

If you want to participate, put on your creative thinking cap and get started on your work of chapeaux art ASAP.

Think pink at Color Factory

20.  Think pink at Color Factory

Miranda Priestly once famously said, "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking." But at Color Factory, florals for spring   are   actually groundbreaking as the interactive art experience in Soho takes flowery themes to immersive new levels.

Color Factory 's “Colors in Bloom” experience is now open—exactly at the time when we could all mercifully use a break from the gray landscapes and cold nights.

For example, there's the Central Park Confetti Room, complete with larger-than-life pink cherry blossoms inspired by the city's first sign of spring. Tickets start at $38/person for the experience, which runs through mid-May.

Journey into the Space Age at The Intrepid

Visitors can climb aboard a lunar rover model, leave footprints on the Moon via a virtual moonwalk, and see Apollo artifacts. "Apollo: When We Went to the Moon" spans 9,000 square feet in the museum’s Space Shuttle Pavilion where it'll join the Space Shuttle Enterprise.

22.  Get out for Governors Ball

Get ready for De Niro Con

23.  Get ready for De Niro Con

From June 14-16, the Festival is hosting De Niro Con , which will include set recreations, costume exhibits, behind-the-scenes chats, screenings, and anything that could be tangentially related to De Niro—you'll find it all there.

The three-day festival will also include the De Niro Archive Gallery, which will display items from De Niro’s personal archives, including annotated scripts, rare photos, props, and other film-related memorabilia from the 80-year-old’s illustrious career.

Dine around at JAPAN Fes

24.  Dine around at JAPAN Fes

Eat your way through Japan without ever leaving New York City at JAPAN Fes, the massive foodie festival, which is back and bigger than ever for 2024. The organization is hosting 30 outdoor events this year stretching from March through November in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. One scene, called the Library of Magical Portals, features colossal books brimming with dreams and algorithms. Another scene called Symphony of Illusions constantly morphs, while the Infinite Maze immerses visitors into multiple parallels.

K. Krombie's Purefinder tours , "Death in New York," "The Psychiatric History of New York" and "Hell Gate," explore the city's darker side through meticulously researched and theatrically presented historical narratives.

Each tour covers about 2.5 miles in about two-and-a-half hours. “Death in New York” and “The Psychiatric History of New York” are offered weekly, while “Hell Gate” is offered twice per month. Tours cost $32-$34 per person;   you can book one here .

Laugh out loud at Punderdome

30.  Laugh out loud at Punderdome

The pun, that most democratic of jokes: At its best, it’s sublimely satisfying to the reptilian part of our brains that loves easy comedy. At its worst, it produces a groan so gut-deep, it’s almost as good as a belly laugh. The form is mined for all it’s worth at this monthly tournament, hosted by Rodney Dangerfield impersonator Fred Firestone and his daughter, Jo.

A fixture on the NYC comedy landscape for more than a decade, this show at Littlefield in Brooklyn is like a rap battle, only much nerdier. Hear pun pros face-off in the All-Star Tournament of Pun Champions where punsters deliver two-minute pun-stand-up routines, after only two minutes of preparation.

Shows this spring are on April 3 and May 15.

While we may take it for granted sometimes, those of us who live in New York State know that it is a wonderful place to live and play during the springtime. Whether you are a New York State resident, or you are just vacationing in this beautiful region, you can find some pretty amazing places to visit here in the Empire State.

With the spring thaw right around the corner, people are chomping at the bit to get out and enjoy some nice weather. Whether it’s a trip to the park or a drive to a museum in another town, people are eager to put the chill of winter behind them and enjoy a weekend getaway. We’re taking a look at few locations around New York that make for a perfect springtime weekend getaway or even a day trip if you live close.

Albany, New York

Home to the New York State Capitol and Legislature, Albany offers visitors a mix of history and culture during a weekend getaway. Serving as the state’s capitol since the late 1880s, the uniquely-designed building sits at the top of the hill on State Street. Constructed using Italian Renaissance and Romanesque architecture, primarily because the state switched designers during the build, the capital is perhaps the most unique-looking capitol in the country. Public tours are conducted Monday-Saturday (except for holidays). Combine the capitol tour with the Empire State Plaza, which offers a look at the state’s history and people.

Include the New York State Museum as part of your weekend getaway’s history tour. Opened in 1836, the museum is the country’s oldest and largest state museum. Providing exhibits exploring New York’s history, visitors can view items from the development of the Erie Canal to Woodstock. The museum offers several special exhibits, so return visits are recommended.

Once used in World War II to fight Nazi U-boats, the USS Slater is a former destroyer now on display along the Hudson River. The ship provides a look at naval life during the war. Tours are offered April-October.

With several wineries and vineyards available in the Albany area, it’s easy to find a good winery, such as Saratoga Winery. Located in nearby Saratoga Springs, the winery has more than a dozen varieties to try during a tasting. It also offers local beer. The winery offers live music and wood-fired pizza on weekends, so it’s easy to spend a day at Saratoga Winery.

Looking for a good meal in Albany leads you to Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse, where you can find the city’s best steak, as well as delicious chicken and pasta entrees. Another outstanding restaurant to visit is the Barnsider Albany. Home to steaks aged 28 days for their best quality, they are trimmed and perfected by the restaurant’s onsite butchers. Teamed with tasty fish and pasta dishes, the Barnsider is an excellent choice for dinner on your weekend getaway.

During your weekend getaway, the Renaissance Albany Hotel provides a luxurious stay downtown. Located in the former DeWitt Hotel, the Renaissance also prides itself on the building’s history. In addition, the Washington Park Inn is home to seven guest rooms in a Victorian-era mansion. Built in 1884, the inn is minutes from attractions and restaurants.

10 Fabulous New York State Springtime Getaways. While we may take it for granted sometimes, those of us who live in New York State know that it is a wonderful place to live and play during the springtime. Whether you are a New York State resident, or you are just vacationing in this beautiful region, you can find some pretty amazing places to visit here in the Empire State.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo offers visitors an eclectic selection of attractions for a springtime weekend getaway. From catching a Buffalo Bison minor league baseball game to enjoying activities along the Canalside, visitors enjoy their time in the city.

Canalside is the city’s waterfront gem. Home to concerts and festivals throughout the year, the area is the place to be. Home to the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, you can tour ships and a submarine, as well as view military vehicles and equipment. Try your hand at piloting a vessel with a maritime simulator. A walk along the Canalside is a great way to take in people watching during your visit.

As the third oldest zoo in the country, the Buffalo Zoo offers visitors an opportunity to view animals from around the world. Featuring animals endangered animals such as the Japanese macaque and snow leopard, the zoo shares these animals’ stories, as well as others in an attempt to prevent the species from extinction. Other animals featured at the Buffalo Zoo include the polar bear exhibit, seals, lions and rhinos.

The Buffalo Museum of Science is an attraction for all ages. Not just aimed toward children, the museum’s interactive exhibits feature a look at Buffalo from space, connecting the region with outer space. You can also walk through a beehive to get a realistic look at how a bee colony works and human reliance on bees. With eight major exhibits, the museum offers a fun way to explore the area on your weekend getaway.

For wine aficionados, a visit to Chateau Buffalo offers a taste of local wines and ciders. Starting out selling ciders, Chateau Buffalo added regional wines. Later, they decided to add their own line of wines to the inventory. With weekend tastings, Chateau Buffalo is a great spot to sample a variety of brands.

As the saying goes “When in Rome…” Buffalo is the birthplace of what’s affectionately known nationwide as Buffalo wings. Why not visit the place where it all started? The Anchor Bar is credited with inventing chicken wings in 1964. Today, most people believe that Bar Bill Tavern makes the best wings in the Buffalo area (IMO it is a LaNova’s), so a stop there should be included on your weekend getaway.

For non-wing fans (is there such a thing?), head to Raclettes for an impressive French culinary experience. From escargot on the appetizer menu to entrees such as cassoulet (featuring duck confit) and boeuf bourguignon (braised beef). Your weekend getaway to Buffalo can cross palates.

The Lenox Hotel and Suites offers a stay in history. The boutique hotel is situated in a building dating back to 1896 in the Allentown area. With beautifully-designed rooms, the hotel offers a luxurious experience on your getaway.

With only three guest rooms, you are guaranteed an intimate experience at the Parkside House Bed and Breakfast. Located in the Parkside neighborhood, the late 19th-century house offers a perfect spot for a couple’s weekend visit. The neighborhood is home to several uniquely-designed houses, so a morning or evening stroll may be in order. The bed and breakfast is near several attractions, including the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House Complex.

Cooperstown, New York

Home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, baseball fans will love a weekend getaway to Cooperstown. Baseball fans can also visit the Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum, which showcases 30 life-size stars in key game settings.

But, Cooperstown is more than a baseball mecca. The Fenimore Art Museum presents an array of art exhibits, focusing on sharing New Yorkers’ cultural heritage through special exhibitions. Donated to the state historical association, the Fenimore House became a museum in the mid-1940s. Overlooking Otsego Lake, the museum’s grounds are among the most beautiful in the state and provide an impressive view during a walk.

A visit to The Farmer’s Museum (open April-October) takes you back to life on a 19th-century farm. The living history museum is one of the oldest in the United States. Enjoy a ride on a horse-drawn carriage during your visit as you learn about early American farm life. With farm tools and equipment from the 1800s housed in buildings resembling the era, a trip to the farm is a true lesson in appreciating the farmer’s role in America.

Located in Burlington Flats, about a 20-minute drive from Cooperstown, Rustic Ridge Winery is home to a variety of wine created from grapes vineyards in the Finger Lakes. Opened in 2010 on a family farm, Rustic Ridge’s menu includes sweet and semi-dry wines, whites and reds.

After a day of touring the Cooperstown area, head to Toscana Italian Fusion & Grill for a unique dinner. Using fresh ingredients, the chef seeks to create memorable dining experiences. With a variety of Italian dishes, such as pasta featuring little neck clams in red or white sauce, the restaurant ventures on to entrees such as osso buco Milanese, a pork shank simmered in fresh herbs and tomato broth.

Offering a casual dining experience, Council Rock Brewery is the perfect spot for a sandwich or burger. Of course, Council Rock has to have New York pastrami on the menu. While you can enjoy an Empire State favorite, know that the burgers aren’t just a burger and American cheese. Using black angus steak burgers, the menu includes toppings from applewood bacon and whole grain mustard to a variety of cheeses, such as extra sharp cheddar and brie. Council Rock also brews its own beer, offering a selection featuring golden rod ale to a red ale.

While enjoying your weekend getaway, it’s tough to beat a stay at the Otesaga Resort Hotel. With views of Otesaga Lake, the resort presents a luxurious experience to its guests. The resort is also minutes from Cooperstown attractions.

The Inn at Cooperstown provides a cozy stay for guests. With only 18 guest rooms, the Inn allows guests a relaxing environment less than two blocks from the baseball hall of fame. From classically-designed rooms to luxurious suites, the Inn at Cooperstown is an excellent choice for accommodations.

Corning, New York

Home to the Corning Glass Museum and the Rockwell Museum for a look at the famous art created by Norman Rockwell and special exhibits, a weekend getaway to Corning takes you to just south of the Finger Lakes region, so you can mix visiting attractions in town with taking a Finger Lakes wine country tour.

A visit to the downtown Gaffer District takes you among beautiful historical buildings, great shopping, and dining. Start your history tour on Market Street and learn about the area as you visit storefronts and buildings. While taking a self-guided tour, check out the stores and boutiques in the area. Grab lunch at any of the restaurants in the area.

While you’re visiting the Corning area, consider taking an hour drive north to the former Seneca Army Depot to take the white deer scenic tour. It is a rare opportunity to see the white deer up-close.

As you finish your day’s activities, check out Stonecat Café for a seasonal menu highlighting regional cuisine. Located in a former farmers market, Stonecat’s menu features entrees such as duck confit and pulled pork bbq. For a casual meal, visit Aniello’s Pizzeria in the Gaffer District for authentic New York-style pizza.

Located near the city’s attractions, the Staybridge Suites is an excellent choice for your weekend getaway. Offering a casual, relaxing environment, the Staybridge provides a nice spot for a weekend getaway. For a secluded location with six guest rooms, Nel’s Place bed and breakfast provides a beautiful wooded setting just minutes from Corning’s attractions.

Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York

Nature enthusiasts enjoy visiting Cornwall, about an hour north of New York City. The area is home to Pollepel Island and outdoor adventure guide Storm King Adventures.

Enjoy a guided tour of Pollepel Island, leading to Bannerman Castle. During your visit to Cornwall, head out on the Hudson River with a kayak tour organized through Storm King Adventures. Or, you may want to leave the driving to the captain of a boat and enjoy a view of the area on a river cruise with Pride of the Hudson.

If land adventures are more to your liking, take a drive to the US Military Academy’s visitors center in nearby West Point. You can purchase tickets for one- or two-hour tours through West Point Tours for visits beyond the visitors center.

Prima Pizza is a third-generation pizza restaurant in Cornwall that specializes in New York-style pizza. The restaurant even ships its pies around the country. Its pizzas are economically priced and are popular in the area.

The Canterbury Brook Inn offers an upscale European-style menu. With entrees such as a classic Wienerschnitzel to Swiss cheese fondue, you’ll be dining at a Swiss chateau.

A short drive from Cornwall, the Storm King Lodge bed and breakfast in Mountainville provides a cozy stay for your weekend getaway. With less than 10 rooms available, the B&B offers an intimate visit.

With a view overlooking the Hudson River and the US Military Academy, you’ll enjoy a weekend at the Thayer Hotel in West Point. The historic hotel, with well-appointed rooms, has hosted presidents and other dignitaries over the years.

New York State Finger Lakes Region

Located in upstate New York among a series of long, narrow lakes resembling fingers, the Fingers Lake region is home to cities such as Ithaca and Geneva. The region is ripe with vineyards and wineries. The Seneca Lake wine trail features many, many wineries and vineyards around the lake. Open year-round, the wineries offer tastings, as well as food pairings. As you travel the trail, remember to use a designated driver, and maybe buy a bottle or two or three for home or family and friends.

Since Hubby and I have spent so much time in the Finger Lakes area going back and forth to Cornell with Max, I wrote up a bunch of posts about the area wineries. If you are going to the Finger Lakes for wine tasting, be sure to check out these posts: ● Estate Wineries on Seneca Lake ● Wine Tasting Seneca Lake (east side) ● Wine Tasting On The West Side Of Seneca Lake ● Wine Tasting On Canandaigua Lake ● Wine Tasting On Cayuga Lake

Largest of the Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake is considered the lake trout capital of the world. Nearly 40 miles long, the lake has a long history. Formed by glaciers millions of years ago, the region was once home to Iroquois villages. Today, the lake offers an excellent area for boating and scenic views.

For an amazing view on Cayuga Lake, visit Ithaca Falls, just a short drive north of Ithaca. The 150-foot tall waterfalls is the largest in the region and marks Fall Creek’s plunge into the lake. The waterfall is a popular photo opportunity, as well as a picnic site.

While in Ithaca, visit the Cornell Botanic Gardens. With 35 acres dedicated to the botanic gardens, the attraction is home to 12 special gardens, including flowers, perennials, vines, and ornamental grasses. A 100-acre arboretum examines the role of trees, plants, and shrubs in the environment while offering visitors an attractive area to stroll. (This area is beautiful!)

Seneca Falls is home to the Women’s Rights National Park. The history of women’s rights officially started with a convention at the spot that was later named to the National Park Service. Your visit will cover the history of struggles for civil and equal rights within the United States, as well as internationally.

Enjoy a wood-fired pizza in a casual environment at Ciao Wood-fired Pizza and Pasta in Ithaca. Besides pizza, Ciao also serves pasta, sandwiches, soups, and salads.

Located on Cayuga Lake, the Boatyard Grill offers a casual upscale dining experience with steaks, fresh seafood, and burgers.

With a variety of hotels and inns dotting the Finger Lakes landscape, the Argos Inn provides an intimate hotel stay in Ithaca. The boutique hotel features 13 elegantly-designed rooms in a historic mansion.

Bed and breakfast fans will enjoy staying at the William Henry Miller Inn. The Ithaca B&B is situated in downtown Ithaca, minutes from local colleges and attractions. Opened in 1999, the inn offers nine well-designed rooms for its guests.

Lake Placid, New York

Hosting the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid may be a winter sports fan’s retreat, but the area also offers a beautiful setting for a springtime weekend getaway. With Olympic attractions as a backdrop, a visit to the Winter Olympics Museum and Visitor Center make for an interesting look into the event’s history. A tour of the Herb Brooks Arena – site of the United States’ men’s hockey team’s run to the gold medal – should top your list of things to do. The arena is named for the late Herb Brooks, who coached the Americans to the gold medal.

Take a drive around Mirror Lake and enjoy the beauty of the lake, mountains, and forest. While known for the colors of the leaves during the fall, Mirror Lake is beautiful year round. A short drive south of town takes you to the John Brown Farm State Historic Site. Home to the famous abolitionist, John Brown led freed slaves to the area to live and find work. He is also buried on the farm.

Hikers enjoy traveling the Brewster Peninsula Trails along Lake Placid. Former access roads along the lake have been turned into the hiking trails.

Wine aficionados will enjoy a trip to the Goose Watch Lake Winery’s tasting room in downtown Lake Placid. With wines produced in the Finger Lakes region, the Lake Placid tasting room features more than 20 wines to sample and purchase.

Enjoy a freshly brewed craft beer at the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery. All beer served at the pub is brewed on site. Bottles and cans are produced at a brewery at the Utica brewery. The Lake Placid brewery opened in the late 1990s and has grown into one of the area’s most popular brands. The beer was even served at a White House in the early 2000s. Besides excellent beer, the pub also has a casual dining menu featuring burgers, sandwiches, and pizza.

10 Fabulous New York State Springtime Getaways. While we may take it for granted sometimes, those of us who live in New York State know that it is a wonderful place to live and play during the springtime. New York City, New York

Of course, the Big Apple appeals to everyone around the world regardless of the time of the year. But, for New Yorkers, a trip to the city may be just what they are looking for a weekend getaway, or maybe even a long weekend. With more attractions offered in the city than time to see them all, people need to plan their visit to ensure they cover as much of New York’s attractions as possible.

The National September 11 Memorial and Museum tops most visitors’ lists today. Dedicated in 2011, on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center, Shanksville (Pennsylvania) and the Pentagon in Washington DC, as well as the 1993 attack, the memorial and museum rank as one of the most visited sites in New York. Built on the grounds of the World Trade Center, the memorial and museum consist of two reflection pools and the largest manmade waterfall in the country. The names of the victims of each attack are inscribed around the reflection pools.

Mention New York City and most people will respond with Times Square, so a visit to the busiest spot in the world is a must-do for most visitors. Once home to the American Horse Exchange in the carrier district, the neighborhood experienced a series of changes as it grew to become the attraction it is today, home to the annual New Year’s Eve party and ball drop, as well as dozens of attractions. A visit to Times Square will surely mark off a spot on anyone’s New York bucket list.

With Broadway nearby, catching one of the hit shows or musicals would top anyone’s weekend getaway adventure to New York. From Hamilton to Wicked, and more, the Great White Way welcomes all theatre fans.

You don’t need to be King Kong to reach the top of the Empire State Building. Instead, take the stairs or an elevator to the observation deck on the 86th floor. The views of New York and the area are impressive. With views of Central Park, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty available on the 360-degree deck, the Empire State Building offers a wonderful reason to visit.

Speaking of the Statue of Liberty, a trip to the national monument is a must. A gift from France, the statue was dedicated in 1886. It’s undergone renovations over the years to remain a popular attraction. The view of the city from the crown offers a special experience. Please note that advanced reservations are required to visit the crown.

If museums are your thing, then head over to the Museum of Modern Art, where you can view some of the most outstanding contemporary art in the world. The American Museum of Natural History offers a look at ocean life, ecological diversity, as well as New York’s environmental history. The museum hosts several special exhibitions throughout the year.

With so many amazing restaurants and cafes calling the city home, it is nearly impossible not to find a menu you will like. Mario’s in Brooklyn gives visitors a real taste of New York-style pizza. If you’re interested in a more formal dining experience, check out One if by Land (Hubby proposed to me there, so it will always have a soft place in my heart!)

When looking for a hotel, consider the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Minutes from attractions, the Marriott provides upscale comfort and luxury experience. The Warwick Hotel in Manhattan offers elegantly-designed rooms and suites for an extravagant stay. (I hosted several events there – the rooms are lovely!)

Once home to a photography genius, George Eastman Museum recognizes his accomplishments. The museum’s exhibits outgrew the mansion, so a new museum building was opened. The mansion has been renovated and reflects life when Eastman occupied. The mansion also hosts special photo exhibits throughout the year.

Spread over 20 acres the Seneca Park Zoo offers a nice area to view animals from the arctic, Africa, North America and Asia. From elephants and tigers to otters and polar bears, a visit to the zoo is a literal tour of the world. Nicely laid out, the zoo takes visitors on an international tour beginning with tropical birds and ending in Africa where you can see up to 16 animals, ranging from a white rhino to an amur tiger.

With a history dating back to the mid-1800s, Rochester is home to the country’s fourth-oldest amusement park. Seabreeze Amusement Park offers families and couples a day’s worth of entertainment. From roller coasters and log rides to stage shows and waterpark attractions, Seabreeze is a fun experience for everyone.

History buffs will enjoy a visit to the Susan B. Anthony House and Museum. A leader of the suffrage movement to give women the right the vote, Susan B. Anthony’s hard work paid off in 1920 when the 19th Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution giving women the right to vote. Though she died 14 years before the amendment was passed, her work was credited as crucial in getting states to ratify the amendment.

Built in 1911, the Lamberton Conservatory provides a beautiful setting for visitors to view flowers, plants and trees. Open daily, the conservatory also hosts special exhibits.

Named as one of the top hot dog joints in the United States, Dogtown proudly serves hotdogs using dog breed themes. 20 Best Places to Visit in Upstate New York

There's plenty to see in New York beyond the Big Apple.

Wendy O'Dea has worked as a travel journalist and content strategist for two decades. Her work has appeared in USA Today, Travel + Leisure, 10best.com, Robb Report , and many other outlets.

Occasionally, when I tell people I'm from New York, their reaction is something along the lines of, "But you don't sound like you're from New York." I wonder, have they forgotten there's a whole state beyond the Big Apple?

But upstate New York, with its majestic mountains, abundance of lakes, and charming small towns, is anything but forgettable as anyone who has been to the region knows. For those who haven't yet visited, or want to see more of it, here are 20 of the best places to visit in upstate New York.

Conesus Lake

Conesus Lake is the westernmost Finger Lake, drawing crowds every year for its July 3rd Ring of Fire, when 10,000 flares are lit along its periphery as fireworks explode overhead. Nearby, the tiny hamlet of Lakeville is home to the Little Lake Brewing brewery, one of the stops along the new Livingston Libation Loop that maps out wineries, cideries, and craft microbreweries around the county. While there, don't miss the recently installed street murals and art along the 90-mile self-guided Inspirations Trail.

Cooperstown

The National Baseball Hall of Fame is just one of the notable attractions worth visiting in this quaint New York village. The Fenimore Art Museum , built on land once owned by novelist James Fenimore Cooper, features an impressive collection of American art, and the Glimmerglass Festival , held each summer, lures opera lovers from far and wide. Visitors to nearby Howe Caverns (about 38 miles east), can go caving or spelunking at New York state's second-most visited natural attraction.

Letchworth State Park

Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park features an impressive gorge carved out over centuries by the Genesee River. You'll find dozens of camera-ready waterfalls where the river dramatically crashes down along shale, limestone, and sandstone cliffs that rise 550 feet at their highest point. A recently built Autism Nature Trail , the first in the country designed for people on the autism spectrum, includes eight marked sensory stations spread across a one-mile loop.

Niagara Falls

In addition to the iconic Niagara Falls, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center is worth a stop to learn more about the history of the Underground Railroad, which often culminated at the Canadian border. Learn about Harriet Tubman and local heroes like John Morrison. The museum's permanent exhibit, " One More River to Cross ," received the 2019 Award of Excellence from the American Association for State and Local History.

Located at the southwestern end of Chautauqua Lake, Jamestown is best known as the hometown of comedienne Lucille Ball. Visitors with an appreciation of comedy should pop by the National Comedy Center — the first museum dedicated to the art of comedy. For something more intellectual, the renowned Chautauqua Institution is a short drive up the lake, and each summer features speakers, performers, and programs focused on the "exploration of the best in human values and the enrichment of life."

Ellicottville

About an hour south of Buffalo, in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, this quaint village exudes charm as witnessed by the well-preserved and restored homes and buildings dating back to the 19th century. It's also where western New York sports enthusiasts and skiers go to mountain bike, hike, or slalom down the 60 slopes and trails at neighboring Holiday Valley Resort .

Seneca Falls

Situated at the north end of Cayuga Lake, this historic spot is believed to be the inspiration for the town of Bedford Falls in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life." Most notably, though, is the important role it played in the women's rights movement, having hosted the first Women's Rights Convention in 1848. The town's Convention Days (each July) attract crowds, and the Women's Rights National Historical Park is worth visiting, too. You can also toast to the suffragettes while wine tasting along one of the many nearby Finger Lakes wine trails.

Skaneateles

This affluent town whose name means "long lake" in native Iroquois is another central New York destination known for its wine tasting and fall foliage. It's also a favorite among avid cyclists who come to pedal the 32-mile trail around the lake. Each year, starting Thanksgiving weekend, the town hosts its annual Dickens Christmas celebration with live entertainment, horse and wagon rides, and a cast of Dickensian characters.

Lake George

Few lakes around New York state are known for scuba diving, so visitors are often surprised to discover that certified divers can explore 18th-century shipwrecks at the bottom of Lake George, including the oldest intact warship in North America. Vacationers flock to this town in the Adirondack region each summer, and the crowds can get thick, but there's also plenty of winter fun to be had, including snowshoeing and a family-focused carnival every February.

Saranac Lake

The Adirondack Mountains have beckoned city dwellers for centuries, including tycoons like the Guggenheims and Vanderbilts, who owned rustic yet luxurious compounds known as the Great Camps. The Point , once a Rockefeller Great Camp, still welcomes guests with all-inclusive stays that harken back to that time, complete with black-tie dinners. The resort is near the village of Saranac Lake, nestled between the mountains and lakes and filled with inviting boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.

Not only is Ithaca a top-notch college town, but it's also a natural wonderland with breathtaking gorges, parks, and waterfalls, like Taughannock Falls, with a height three times that of Niagara Falls. There's an abundance of activities around the city, too, including a botanical garden, boat tours, wine trails, and a self-guided Discovery Trail that highlights local history, astronomy, and earth science. Rumor has it that it was also the birthplace of the ice cream sundae .

Watkins Glen and Montour Falls

In upstate New York, many destinations are defined by their proximity to one of the state's lakes — and so it is, with Watkins Glen, found on the southern end of Seneca Lake. Best known for its legendary auto-racing history, the Watkins Glen International racetrack has played host to countless races, from the Grand Prix to Nascar to Formula One. It's also a good jumping-off point to hit the Seneca Lake Wine Trail , which stretches along the length of the lake and is the largest wine trail in the Finger Lakes.

Saratoga Springs

Just because Saratoga Springs is already known as a popular vacation destination doesn't mean you shouldn't go. There's something classically old-school about spending a day at the races at the famous Saratoga Race Course or at Saratoga Spa State Park , which is a National Historic Landmark. The art scene is solid, too, with impressive productions at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center , the Spa Little Theatre , and other venues.

Thousand Islands

The U.S.-Canadian border snakes through the St. Lawrence River, zigzagging through the spectacular Thousand Islands archipelago where the river meets Lake Ontario. The archipelago consists of about 1,800 islands, from small and craggy to large and lush. Visitors converge here each summer and fall to soak up views of picture-perfect lighthouses and dramatic castles, including the never-inhabited Boldt Castle. On the nearby mainland, towns include Clayton, Cape Vincent, and Sackets Harbor, the latter of which has been designated a New York State Heritage Area.

An affluent upstate New York community, Pittsford is a charmer set on the banks of the Erie Canal. This year, the town — and many others along the path of this historic waterway that connects the Atlantic with the Great Lakes — celebrates its bicentennial with special programming. That includes a twilight boat tour on the Sam Patch, a replica 1800s packet boat. Come summer, visitors and locals dine at Schoen Place overlooking the canal, then line up for homemade ice cream at Pittsford Farms Dairy & Bakery . Other attractions include neighboring Mendon Ponds Park and The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester.

Ausable Chasm

In the eastern Adirondacks, not far from Lake Champlain and the Vermont border, Ausable Chasm is a two-mile-long sandstone gorge carved out 500 million years ago. It's another ideal destination for chasing waterfalls (particularly the cascading Rainbow Falls) and exploring the Adirondacks on its many hiking and adventure trails. It's also a stone's throw from the North Star Underground Railroad Museum , which tells the stories of slaves seeking freedom at the Canadian border, located about an hour north by car.

Dia Beacon , a celebrated collection of contemporary art, brought a lot of attention — and visitors — to this city on the banks of the Hudson River. And with that attention came more appreciation for the many other galleries, shops, cafés, breweries, and antique stores that have taken up residence on its magnetic Main Street. Trek to the top of Mount Beacon or book a boat tour to Pollepel Island (known locally as Bannerman Island), which Native Americans believed was inhabited by haunted, hostile spirits.

About a three-hour drive from New York City, this mountain town welcomes adventurers with its multitude of endorphin-producing activities, including the fastest and longest zip-line canopy tour in North America. There's a charming Main Street in this "gem of the Catskills," with inviting boutiques, bistros, and galleries. In August 2022, the Wylder Windham hotel reopened with a pickleball court, heated pool, and wine tastings every weekend.

Don't write off Buffalo just because of its infamous winter weather. The city continues to evolve as a tourism destination, with the recent restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House , a restored historic carousel on the Buffalo Waterfront, and a big expansion of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (previously known as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery).

Sylvan Beach

Since we're highlighting towns around New York's Finger Lakes, Oneida Lake and the village of Sylvan Beach deserve a shout-out, too. It's a great option for a classic upstate summer vacation, where visitors can spend the day at the town's old-timey amusement park, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, or simply relaxing lakeside with a bottle of local vino. Another way to while away the day is on the water: Rent a cottage at the new Cove at Sylvan Beach, where each rental includes a private pontoon boat.

Spring bucket list: Here are 10 things you need to do in Upstate NY this season

Spring out of hibernation, Upstate New York: Adventure is calling.

Ice cream stands are handing out the first cream-topped cones of the season. Baseball teams are swinging bats. And trees and flowers are budding just in time for the state’s bouquet of flower festivals.

All seasons are good seasons Upstate. But there’s something particularly great about spring — the short-feeling season that wakes us up after months of clouds, cold and blankets of snow.

Here are 10 must-do activities that showcase the best of spring in Upstate. How many can you cross off your bucket list before summer arrives?

Buffalo's Cherry Blossom Festival

1. Go to a flower festival

After months of ice and snow, Upstate New York becomes a colorful carnival of flowers which is reason enough to celebrate. All season long you can find festivals in almost every region of the state. Visit Buffalo’s Cherry Blossom Festival , Rochester’s Lilac Festival , Candor’s Daffodil Festival , or Albany’s Tulip Festival, which was recently named one of the 10 best tulip festivals in America . See a full list of flower festivals here .

2. Go to a baseball game

Get yourself some peanuts and cracker jacks at one of Upstate New York’s ballparks . 3. Get ice cream

Listen, we don’t think you need an excuse to treat yourself. But if you’re looking for a reason, the beginning of ice cream season is a tasty one.

Ice cream stands across Upstate are starting to open their windows to dish out soft serve. Celebrate warmer weather by grabbing a scoop or two at your favorite shop.

From the Hudson Valley to the Adirondacks, there are no shortage of fantastic places to grab a cone north of the Big Apple. (Believe us: We toured Upstate in search of the best ice cream stand. ) We suggest stopping by Gannon’s Isle Ice Cream in Syracuse; the Spotted Duck in Penn Yan; the Ice Burgh in Middleburgh ; and Donnelly’s Soft Ice Cream in Saranac Lake.

Taughannock Falls thunders down

4. Hike to Taughannock Falls

There’s a reason Taughannock Falls is Ithaca’s most photographed waterfall. At 215 towering feet, the cascade is the tallest free-falling waterfall east of the Mississippi River. It cleaves a dramatic path, tumbling endlessly into a pool at the bottom of rocky cliffs that tower almost 400 feet above the gorge.

Taughannock is beautiful in every season. But the beloved Trumansburg waterfall is arguably at its best in spring, when melting snow and ice lead a raging torrent of water to thunder into the pool below.

Hike Taughannock Falls State Park’s spectacular gorge and rim trails to drink in views of the waterfall from above and below. And while you’re in the Ithaca area — which is famously gorges — take on Visit Ithaca’s Waterfalls Challenge and visit one of the other waterfalls included on the free challenge’s list of 22 photo-worthy waterfalls, ranging from well-known falls to hidden gems.

6. See a drive-in movie

Like baseball games and ice cream stands, the opening of drive-in movie theaters in one of Upstate’s most entertaining preludes to summer.

Drive-ins across Upstate have started open — including the Transit Drive-In in Lockport and the resort-style Four Brothers Drive-In Theatre in Amenia, both of which were among the four Upstate theaters included on USA Today’s 10Best ranking of the best drive-ins in the Northeast .

Bring a blanket and catch the season’s top flicks. (Popcorn not included, but highly recommended.)

8. Go whitewater rafting

Hey, adrenaline junkies: This one is for you.

Spring is the time to go whitewater rafting in Upstate New York — a time when melting snow leads rivers to swell and creates adventure-worthy Class IV and Class V rapids. Big water is best found in April and early May before summer soothes swollen rivers.

Luckily, there are plenty of experienced guides ready to help you paddle your way through a whitewater adventure — particularly in the unparalleled Adirondacks. Whitewater Challengers in North River and the Adirondack Rafting Company in Indian Lake are two of the region’s many guides.

The Lyrids begin this week. How to see first major meteor shower of spring when it peaks

While the april 8 eclipse was only viewable in north america, the lyrids should be visible pretty much around the world..

A week after that stunning total solar eclipse , the Lyrid meteor shower is about to give sky-gazers plenty of reasons to once again look toward the cosmos.

One of the oldest-known meteor showers  on record, the Lyrids has peaked like clockwork every late April for thousands of years. And while that peak won't be occurring until Saturday, you still have a chance to see the soaring meteors beginning Monday.

The best part? While the April 8 eclipse was only viewable in North America, the Lyrids should be visible pretty much around the world .

Here's what to know about the Lyrid meteor shower .

Out of this world: From Stanley cups to Samsung phones, this duo's company launches almost anything into space

Where do the Lyrid meteors come from?

Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through debris trails left by comets and other space objects. The debris – space rocks known as meteoroids – collides with Earth's atmosphere at high speed and disintegrates, creating fiery and colorful streaks in the sky, according to NASA .

Those resulting fireballs, better known as "shooting stars," are meteors. Those meteoroids that survive their trip to Earth without burning up in the atmosphere are called meteorites, NASA says .

Named for the nearby constellation Lyra, the Lyrid meteor shower is composed of pieces of debris  from the Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher . The comet is named for A. E. Thatcher, who discovered it in 1861.

The meteor shower itself, though, has been observed for 2,700 years ever since the first recorded sighting was made in 687 BC by the Chinese, according to NASA .

How can we see the Lyrid meteor shower?

The Lyrids are known as one of  four major meteor showers each year  that have a sharp peak. This year, that peak falls between April 21-22,  according to EarthSky.org .

However, the meteor shower could be visible anytime beginning Monday.

According to NASA, the best view in the Northern Hemisphere of the shower is after moonset and before dawn.

Here are tips from the U.S. space agency:

  • Pick an area well away from city lights or street lights.
  • Bring a sleeping bag, blanket, or lawn chair.
  • Lie flat on your back with your feet facing east and look up.
  • Be patient. About 30 minutes in the dark your eyes should adapt and you should begin to see meteors.

How many Lyrids will we see per hour?

The first meteor shower of the spring , the fast and bright meteors of the Lyrids will appear to be flying across the night sky.

While  NASA notes  that the Lyrids can surprise watchers with as many as 100 meteors seen per hour, in general, 10-20 Lyrid meteors can be seen per hour during the peak.

Lyrids don’t tend to leave long, glowing dust trains behind them as they streak through the Earth's atmosphere. However, they can produce the occasional bright flash called a fireball.
