Dynjandi Falls: How to Visit Iceland’s Most Beautiful Waterfall (+Map & Tips)

Dynjandi, sometimes also called Fjallfoss or Dynjandifoss, is often considered to be the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. If you know that Iceland has thousands of waterfalls, each more beautiful than the other, then this really says it all.

In this article, you can find all the practical information about visiting Dynjandi Waterfall in Iceland’s Westfjords . Why visit, when to go, how to get there, what kind of a car you need, and what to expect at the Dynjandi site itself.

At the bottom of this post, we included some tips for your visit and a short video . It shows what it’s like to drive to Dynjandi Falls and to visit the surroundings at the waterfall itself.

Dynjandi waterfall Iceland

Why Visit Dynjandifoss

As already mentioned, many people say that Dynjandi is the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. And even though things like that are subjective, that in itself is a great reason to make a trip to the Westfjords and see this unique waterfall!

Sometimes referred to as ‘The Jewel of the Westfjords’ or ‘Mountain Falls’, Dynjandi is actually the collective name for a series of 7 falls. The total elevation of all these falls is around 200m.

The largest and most impressive fall (known singularly as Dynjandi) is at the top and is often compared to a bridal veil because of its shape. Dynjandi waterfall is 30m wide at the top and extends to a width of 60m at the bottom. It’s truly unique and no pictures or videos can do it justice. Just WOW!

To give you an idea of how special Dynjandi is… We visited Dynjandi with our kids, who told me long before our trip that they had seen enough waterfalls and had absolutely no interest to see more… To give them credit, we have indeed visited many waterfalls during our travels and after a while, they all start to look the same…

However, Dynjandi was different. The moment we arrived, the kids were fascinated by it. They all said that this is the most beautiful waterfall in the world. And when you stand there, it truly feels that way.

Dynjandi waterfalls in the Westfjords

What to See

Dynjandi carries water down from the Dynjandisa River into the fjord below. The river itself runs from a lake. Because Dynjandisa is a runoff river, it is subject to seasonal floods. When this happens, the river can increase in size to ten times its volume. This, of course, makes the waterfalls even more spectacular!

But even if you visit during an exceptionally dry summer, as we did, Dynjandi is still incredibly beautiful. I can just try to imagine how it looks at the beginning of the season when the snow is melting in the mountains.

Hiking to Dynjandi

As you arrive at Dynjandi waterfall, you’ll see the series of waterfalls right in front of the car parking area. You can see all the waterfalls right from your car. However, you should really take an effort and walk past all the waterfalls and all the way to the top for the most impressive falls of them all – Dynjandi.

Not only does this give you the best view of the falls, but the panoramic view of the surrounding fjords is simply breathtaking.

Dynjandi can be reached via a short steep hike on a rocky path consisting of a series of steps and slopes. This path was made in 1996 by local volunteers and makes a visit here very simple. It takes just about 10-15 minutes to walk to Dynjandi. It’s something everybody in a reasonable physical condition should be able to do.

If you have weak knees, you may want to take hiking poles for your way back down. You can also just opt to explore the smaller waterfalls below, but if you can, I really recommend hiking all the way to the top. For those with more severe mobility issues, all 7 waterfalls can be clearly viewed from the parking.

Smaller Waterfalls at Dynjandi

On your way to the top, you will pass 6 other waterfalls, which are all just between 2 to 6 m high (for comparison, Dynjandi itself cascades an impressive 100m).

The names of the smaller falls are Hæstahjallafoss , Strompgljúfrafoss , Göngumannafoss , Hrísvaðsfoss-Kvíslarfoss (opposite each other), Hundafoss , and Bæjarfoss . Each of these falls is marked and many have their own viewing platforms. It’s also possible to walk behind Göngumannafoss.

Interesting to know: You may have noted that each name ends with ‘foss’. ‘Foss’ is Icelandic for ‘waterfall’. Also, Dynjandi is often called Dynjandifoss . The name ‘Dynjandi’ means ‘resounding’ or ‘thunderous’. This is a perfect description of this awe-inspiring feature.

Other Sights of Interest Nearby

Through the crashing waters of Dynjandifoss at the top, you may be lucky to get a glimpse of the amazingly vivid red rock. It was formed over the years by layers of iron-rich soil becoming trapped by lava beds.

Before leaving the area, be sure to look around the base of the hill as well. Here you’ll find the remains of an old turf house known as the ‘Farm Mound’, and the ruins of a couple of outbuildings. The farm was inhabited until 1951 when – reportedly – the farmer’s wife decided she could no longer live with Dynjandi’s incessant roar.

If you have more time, you may want to explore the area a bit more. However, the very best views are at the waterfall itself. So if you do the short hike to Dynjandi, you’ll have seen the very best that this area has to offer.

TIP: Along the road from Ísafjörður, about 20 km before you reach Dynjandi, you’ll pass Hrafnseyri . It’s a tiny village with a nice little church and a museum located inside traditional turf houses. There is also a cafe. So if you have some time to spare, you may want to stop here as well.

Hrafnseyri - Westfjords, Iceland

How Much Time Do You Need

The minimum time you need to visit Dynjandi is about half an hour. That’s if you hike all the way to the base of the main waterfall, without too many stops along the way.

Allowing yourself time to stop, admire, and take photographs at each smaller waterfall, plus admire the scenery, I suggest that you plan about 1 to 1.5 hours for a visit to Dynjandi. After all, it’s a long way to get here. It would be a pity to just tick the box, take a ‘been there, done that’ picture, and leave.

Where is Dynjandi – Location & Map

Dynjandi waterfall is located in the remote Westfjords region in Iceland, about 5 hours drive from Reykjavik and about 6 hours from Akureyri (see map ). This impressive waterfall can be found at the end of a beautiful fjord called Arnarfjörður, in Dynjandisvogur bay.

The waterfall is situated around 80 km south of Ísafjörður, the main town of the Westfjords, and 40 km north of Brjánslækur ferry. You will discover Dynjandi in an isolated location accessible only via the Vestfjarðavegur (road #60) that connects the south and the north parts at the western side of the Westfjords.

Whether you come from Isafjordur or from the south, there are some stunning views along the road. If arriving from the north, Dynjandi is visible long before you reach it. If you come from the south, it emerges behind the corner, right before the turn-off to the waterfall itself.

How to Get to Dynjandi

The part of road #60 that you have to take to Dynjandi is a gravel road. The road is in a rather good condition and we found it quite easy to drive. However, we visited Dynjandi in August, when it was very dry, and we drove to Dynjandi from the south and not via the longer route from Isafjordur.

Keep in mind that driving conditions here can change quickly, especially in the shoulder season when you can expect some snow. Also in summer when we visited, we saw a 4WD car with a wheel that was broken off. I can’t even imagine how you have to drive to have that happen, but the car was clearly not able to move at all anymore. It was left in the middle of the road and it looked like it had been standing there for a while…

So drive slowly, be careful, and take your time to enjoy the scenery around you.

Good to know: The road to Dynjandi is closed in winter. It usually closes around late October and reopens around late April. The exact dates depend on the snowfall and vary every year.

Road 60 from Flokalundur to Dynjandi

The easiest way to visit Dynjandi is by car. In summer, you can drive to Dynjandi in any car, but it’s not a good idea to attempt that in spring or autumn. This road is not an F-road, but I’d still recommend that you hire a 4WD or 4×4 for any trip to the Westfjords. You’ll need it not only for Dynjandi but for many other natural attractions in this region.

Our experience: We saw quite a few regular cars driving on the road to Dynjandi. So it’s definitely possible (in summer). However, it’s up to you whether you want to take the risk and be sure to get full insurance for your rental car in Iceland. The morning after visiting Dynjandi, we noticed that our car had a flat tire. It was beyond repair. We have no idea where it happened, but there are just two possibilities – the road to Dynjandi or the road to Raudasandur. Luckily, we had full insurance, so everything was covered.

Our recommendation: We highly recommend renting a 4WD or a 4X4 when traveling in the Westfjords. We toured the Westfjords and some parts of the Icelandic Highlands in a Kia Sorrento 4WD and it was suitable for all the roads.

Driving in the Westfjords - road 60 to Dynjandi

In the high season, from mid-May to the end of August, it’s possible to visit Dynjandi by bus. The Westfjords Adventure bus runs between Patreksfjörður and Ísafjörður several times a week and stops at Dynjandi.

The bus passes Dynjandi twice on the same day and it stops here for 30 minutes. That gives you just enough time to quickly hike to the falls and back. If you want to stay longer, you’ll have to wait for the next bus.

For more information, schedule, and prices, please check the Westfjords Adventure website .

Dynjandi Tours

It’s also possible to visit Dynjandi on an organized tour. On Viator, you can also find a selection of guided tours that include a visit to Dynjandi in their itineraries.

Dynjandi in early summer

Best Time to Visit Dynjandi

The best time to visit Dynjandi is between June and September. That’s when the road is reliably open and the weather is warmer and better suitable for traveling in the Westfjords.

May and October can also be good months to visit, but it’s a shoulder season with even more unpredictable weather. So make sure that you check the weather forecast and road conditions before you go.

Dynjandi is probably the busiest natural landmark in the Westfjords, but I wouldn’t worry about ‘the crowds’ at Dynjandi. Very likely you’ll meet less than 50 people here at the busiest times in the summer. Furthermore, people spread out all over the area and it really doesn’t feel busy. If you come here in late September or October, you’ll likely be completely alone.

TIP: If you want to have the falls all to yourself in summer, come here in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Our experience: We visited Dynjandi in August and went there right after arriving in the Westfjords on a ferry, so it was probably as busy as it gets. The road to get to Dynjandi was very quiet. We hardly met a handful of other cars while driving. Once we got to the falls, we passed 3 cars – it felt like a traffic jam. 🙂 There were quite a few cars at the parking and quite some people at the waterfall itself, but it wasn’t anywhere as busy as in other parts of Iceland.

Dynjandi

Dynjandi with Kids

You can easily visit Dynjandi with children. However, your experience will depend on your kids’ age and willingness to hike uphill to the waterfall itself. Young children might need some help negotiating the steep path; kids from about 4-5 years of age should be able to walk all the way up to Dynjandi by themselves.

Just keep in mind that there are no railings and so ideally you hold your kids’ hands or at least have them close to you at all times.

Our kids loved it in the Westfjords and Dynjandi was definitely one of the highlights. Despite their lack of enthusiasm to visit yet another waterfall, the kids were really impressed with it. Upon arrival, we first had a picnic at the foot of the falls and after that we hiked to Dynjandi, stopping at all the other waterfalls along the way.

The kids had plenty of opportunities to play and run around. The only problem we had was trying to keep our boys close to us. They hike much faster than we do (and I can’t just blame it on the photo stops) and it’s a constant struggle to try to slow them down a bit.

Dynjandi with kids

Is Dynjandi Worth It?

Despite its remote location (or maybe just because of it), Dynjandi is well worth an effort to visit. Not only is the waterfall breathtaking, but the whole area is incredibly scenic as well. The Westfjords is one of the most beautiful parts of Iceland and Dynjandi is the best place to visit in this region.

Furthermore, you don’t drive all the way to the Westfjords just to see Dynjandi. There is so much more to see here and this area is well worth a trip.

The Westfjords are stunning! It’s a very unique part of Iceland that is worth including in your itinerary if you are visiting Iceland during the warmer months of the year.

Facilities & Practical Tips

  • Facilities. There is a large paved parking area at the bottom of the falls. There are also several picnic tables and toilet facilities .
  • Camping. You should know that camping at Dynjandi is not allowed anymore. There seems to be an exception for people traveling by bike or on foot, but if you have a car or a camper van, you’ll have to drive to one of the other campsites in the Westfjords. Just search for ‘Dynjandi camping’ in Google Maps and you’ll see several options.

  • Safety . Dynjandi is a protected natural monument, so it’s important to respect the environment and stay on the paths to preserve the local flora. Furthermore, there are no guard rails, so staying within the designated areas is a must!
  • Photography . Photographs don’t do the falls justice and this is often because it’s hard to capture their scale! For that reason, try to include people in your photos to give some perspective (see also our travel photography tips ). Of course, a video is a great option too. If you have a tripod, you should definitely take it all the way up to the top.
  • Clothing and footwear. We had exceptionally warm and dry weather in the Westfjords. But it can be very cold in the area, particularly when it’s windy and the spray from the falls makes you wet. So be sure to wrap up adequately and wear a waterproof top layer. Sturdy footwear is essential, as rocky paths can sometimes be slippery.

Where to Stay

Dynjandi is in the middle of nowhere, so unless you are camping, you’ll have to stay at one of the bigger towns in the Westfjords. There are also some privately-owned accommodations in the coastal areas.

We stayed at Móra Guesthouse in Birkimelur, along the south coast of the Westfjords. Its location was perfect for our short stay in the Westfjords – close to the ferry and within a short driving distance to most of the landmarks in that part of the Westfjords (Dynjandi, Raudasandur, and Látrabjarg bird cliffs). Furthermore, it’s located right across the road from a hot pool – perfect for an evening swim after a long day of sightseeing.

Keep in mind that there are hardly any shops or restaurants in the remote parts of the Westfjords. So, depending on where you’re staying, you may have to bring some food with you. For example, the closest café to our accommodation was located at Flókalundur petrol station, about 20 km drive. I’m not even sure what its opening hours were…

If you rather stay in a town with some facilities, the best options are Patreksfjörður in the south or Ísafjörður in the north.

Recently returned from a trip where we took 38 strangers on trips around Iceland and ended up making 40 friends! Our driver Lukasz and guide Beggy were absolutely superb and became part of our group family for the two days we spent with them! We had a full day out on the Golden Circle, followed by an awesome evening meal that Beggy organised for us and then spent a magical evening chasing the Aurora! We were also lucky enough to have the same two for our South Coast tour two days later - as a coach driver myself I really appreciated having the same driver & guide for both of our tours! They were both so warm & welcoming and we had so much fun with them both. They also threw in extra stops using their local knowledge, as well as passing on lots of hints & tips. Even days later we’re still talking about the memories we made together and we all miss them very much! Thank you guys! We also had an evening at the Blue Lagoon and our driver Thor K was also very welcoming and looked after us, even offering us a once in a lifetime opportunity to stop enroute to see the lava flow! The whole booking process with Neil in the group bookings was so simple, with our ever changing group size and requirements no issue at all! Thank you all at BusTravel from your Travel Squad buddies! • Ceri E 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly recommended tour… This trip is a must when visiting Iceland, you get to see so much in one tour. The bus is modern, the tour guide was funny, knowledgeable and spoke excellent english. Seeing the planes where The Lord of the Rings was actually filmed was incredible also brought a new understanding of the extremes they worked in. The waterfalls for me were the highlight, breathtaking. Personally I’d take food to avoid the extortionate prices at each stop/sight cafe. I don’t mind paying over but the prices were unacceptable. Again highly recommend this tour but TIP avoid during winter months adding the Northern Lights part as it hardly goes ahead and your not given a refund just a chance to use it again within three years! It was nice to be in a small group as things were generally less busy at the stops (at least until a big bus arrived!). The hot spring is just incredible. I think it depends which guide you get and how much information/anecdotes they share. Read more Written February 20, 2024
  • S66ROvincentp 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Golden Circle great experience As indicated it was a great tour. Well recommended! Less time should have been allocated to the Secret Lagoon. With numerous stops and some people returning back to the coach late meant the return back to Reykjavik was late. Meaning less time to refresh, have a snack etc before having to return to catch the coach for the evening session for the Northern Lights. Speaker/Mic system on board needed to be turned up to hear the full commentary from the excellent guide. Read more Written February 18, 2024

Horrible experience. Also the company should’ve message through trip advisor to let me know it was cancelled or give me other options which they did not do and NO email was sent after they said it was. We got to see some fab sights, got to feed the horses and our guide was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, giving us local information all the way through the trip. The lagoon at the end was surreal! It was beautiful, so serene and private. You could have a little pool all to yourself! Dipping toes in the ocean in sub zero temperatures was a cold experience! We really enjoyed the tour and especially enjoyed Dave, our tour guide, and V-slav (sorry, I didn’t quite catch his name), our driver. I liked the commentary Dave gave…interesting to hear from an Irishman so enamored by this beautiful country. This was good value, which seems to be hard to come by here! I would love to do this tour again in the summer. The falls, glacier, and black sand beach were impressive. The beach was my favorite! Pickup was easy, comfort stop was great, lunch in Vik was yummy. The only thing I would change is getting to spend more time in Vik, mainly to get a better photo of the little church on the hill. Read more Written January 8, 2024

  • lanicopip 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Room for improvement for the driver This trip could have been so much better if the driver would have considered the travelers needs. It would have been better if we spent more time at Godavoss vs craters. The driver should have let us know how long between rides and that there was a bathroom on board, he should have told us about lunch being served before the stop instead of after a long stop, where i bought my own lunch. The Windows were DIRTY and then he must have tried to clean them after the 1st stop and made it all smudgy and was worse and I could not take a decent picture out the window. The driver could have announced how long the stop would be while we where still on the bus, but he wasted our time and waited until we were all off the bus to make his time announcement. Basic information could have been shared ahead of time for us to make better use of our time. Wasting time in line for a bathroom when there was one on the bus would have been nice to know. Our Driver Tom made it all about him and with a little thought he could have made this a great trip. I would have loved to know about the knatts and that they sell nets at the shops before I got all bit up and inhaled a bunch of bugs. Maybe this guy was new but informing him of his missteps will make it better for future customers and perhaps he might get more tips. We always tip our drivers but this guy was not good at all. One of the most stunning natural wonders in Iceland, Dynjandi waterfall is the perfect choice for a half-day shore excursion for summer visitors to Ísafjörður , the capital of the Westfjörðs . Generally held to be one of the most beautiful in Iceland, Dynjandi Waterfall can be ticked off the bucket-list coupled with a stop at a traditional Icelandic farm including coffee and happy marriage cake makes for a wonderful half-day tour.

Most visitors to Iceland don´t make it as far as the western fjörds meaning that Dynjandi receives much fewer visitors each year than its southern rivals such as Gullfoss. If you do have one day in Isafjordur, you must grasp the opportunity to visit on our half-day tour. The scenic drive along coastal roads and mountain tunnels through the Westfjörðs is stunning and an experience in and of itself.

Dynjandi, at 100 meters high, is the tallest waterfall in the Westfjords, and cascades down over multiple parallel levels. It has captured the imagination of visitors to our shores in recent years, going viral on social media as a result.

Our Dynjandi waterfall tour from Ísafjörður has two departures daily and is perfect for passengers aboard the many cruise ships that visit this northern outpost. Our departure times are tailored to fit the Isafjordur cruise ship schedule.

The meeting point for this tour is the cruise ship dock in Ísafjörður. Ísafjörður is becoming increasingly more popular as a cruise ship port of call. Once everyone is onboard, we head out of town and take the mountain tunnel of Vestfjarðagöng. On emerging from the tunnel on the other side of the mountain, we venture onwards through a series of small villages, stunning fjords and sheer faced mountains, before we reach Dynjandi.

Dynjandi Waterfall in Westfjords, Iceland

Nestled at the innermost point of the Arnar Fjörð, the surrounding area around the Dynjandi waterfall is quite breathtaking, even before we take Dynjandi into consideration.

From the parking area, it is a leisurely 15 walk over the trails towards the falls, which dominate the landscape here. You will pass several smaller falls along the way towards the main attraction. Even if you don´t make it all the way to the falls, the view from afar is still mesmeric.

The word dynjandi in Icelandic means thunderous, pouring or resounding. One can see at once why the falls here were named so, as several smaller waterfalls merge here to form the larger Dynjandi falls.

It has a distinctive appearance, a narrow 30 meters wide at the top and tapers to its full length of 60 meters at the bottom. It therefore, when viewed from afar, somewhat resembles a white bridal veil. Up close, one can´t help but be impressed by the scale of this magnificent series of waterfalls.

After the jaw-dropping sites at Dynjandi, we make our way back towards Ísafjörður, but not before one extra stop. We visit the charming Gemlufell Farm, a typical Icelandic working farm situated in idyllic surroundings on the coastline of Dýrar fjord. Daily life in this remote homestead is so peaceful, and you can take in these surroundings while enjoying complimentary tea, coffee and a traditional Icelandic cake called Hjónabandssæla. This oat and rhubarb jam cake loosely translates as Happy Marriage cake!

In summertime, you even get a chance to meet the Icelandic horses up close. These gentle animals are a unique breed and you will learn about it during the visit.

After our stop at Gemlufell Farm, we return you to your ship in Ísafjörður as you get ready to sail to your next destination.

Straight out of a fantasy, Dynjandi Waterfall sits in the remote Westjords of Iceland. It’s the biggest and the most impressive cascade in the region. Translating to “the Thunderer” in English, Dynjandi cascades 100 m (329 ft) over terraces of basalt boulders. Visit the falls to take in some of the most awesome fjord views!

Dynjandi Waterfall (sometimes called Fjallfoss or "Mountain Falls") is actually made up of a series of 7 different waterfalls, measuring 100 m tall, 60 m wide at the base and 30 m wide at the top. On your way to the top, it's possible to walk behind Gongufoss, one of the cascades. All of the waterfalls can be seen from the shore, and the surrounding moor is perfect for photographing, hiking, and camping in the summer season.

ICELAND - DYNJANDI WATERFALL in 1 minute

The original source can be traced to the upland from the river Dynjandisá.   From the top, the water can be followed to the waterfall and other lakes and rivers. All of the waterfalls in Dynjandi come from Lake Stóra-Eyjavatn ,  which currently measures at 350 m above sea level. Dynjandisá River is a runoff river which has been known to suffer from seasonal floods in the springtime and in the winter, where the river volume can increase up to 10 times its resting state.

Where is Dynjandi located?

GPS coordinates of Dynjandi: 65.7328° N, 23.1998° W

Dynjandi is situated between Dynjandisvogur Bay and Arnarfjörður Fjord,  approximately 85 km away from the port town of Ísafjörður.

Expect a scenic but winding route on your way there. Definitely not on the Ring Road and   not recommended for self-drive tourists in winter seasons, it has to be said! Dynjandi is off the beaten track in the remote Westfjords region of Iceland. If you are in the area, Dynjandi is not to be missed if you want to witness what may be the most beautiful  waterfall  in Iceland.

That said, the waterfall is in a very rural location, so don’t expect mass tourism and fancy facilities. A parking lot and a toilet block are all you will get.

How do I get to Dynjandi?

Drive. And keep driving. Part of the adventure is the road trip through the Westfjords .

From Brjánslækur to Dynjandi the 40 km drive is only around 50 minutes, while the drive from Ísafjörður is slightly longer, taking about an hour and a half (85 km) via Vestfjarðarvegur and Vestfjarðavegur. Unfortunately, if you hate driving and you’re in the capital, Dynjandi is approximately 355 km from Reykjavík , which takes about 5 hours via Vestfjarðavegur.

Alternatively, you could drive for 2 hours to Stykkishólmur, on the  Snæfellsnes Peninsula , which is around 165 km and then take a 3-hour ferry ride to Brjánslækur, which is in the Westfjords, then do the 50-minute drive above.

However, we recommend the most common ways, which are driving the entire route or taking a domestic flight to the Westfjords airport and renting a car for the rest of the way.

Plans for Dýrafjarðargöng, a 5.6 km tunnel connecting Arnarfjörður to Dýrafjörður, are expected to be completed in 2020.

Is Dynjandi’s climb difficult?

Not really. To properly appreciate Dynjandi, there’s a relatively short but steep hike to the top – a combination of steps and slopes, totalling around 15 minutes if you do it in one. We recommend splitting it up into stages, which is a welcoming opportunity to admire all of the smaller waterfalls you will see on your way u p. Each of the waterfalls is beautiful in their own right, but the further up you go, the better!

To get to the peak is a bit of a climb, but well worth it for the scenic panoramic view at the top!

What does the name ‘Dynjandi’ mean?

Dynjandi waterfall in Iceland

Dynjandi translates to "thunderous" or "booming" in English, which is an understatement if you look at the size and listen to the sound of it.

Dynjandi is the name of an abandoned farm below the waterfall.

Accommodation and Hotels Near Dynjandi

Most accommodation choices require a commute to get to the waterfall. So unless you are going as part of an organized tour, hiring a sturdy rental car is highly recommended. Please note that camping near Dynjandi is strictly prohibited.

Safety Tips for Visiting Dynjandi

Dynjandi Waterfall in Westjords of Iceland

  • Park in the car park – the waterfall is easily accessible if you stop here and not on the road.
  • Don’t go too close to the waterfall’s drop, there are no guard rails – so be sensible! Stay on the paths that are there for a reason.
  • Dress accordingly. It can get pretty cold close to the waterfall because of the spray. Waterproof clothing is recommended for those planning to get near the action.
  • Keep to the marked paths when hiking. Don’t go thinking there are shortcuts!
  • If you are traveling in winter make sure you have shoes with sturdy soles or ice spikes if it’s slippery or icy.

What is Dynjandi like in Winter?

Dynjandi isn’t quite the same once it’s frozen over. The waterfall is fairly easy to find in the summer, but it's best to avoid driving anywhere near there in winter.

The Westfjords are best accessible in the summer months, from May to October.

In winter many roads, including the mountain road Dynjandisheiði, are closed due to deep snow and frequent avalanches. These roads are not maintained during winter but even the maintained roads can be dangerous and slippery. It's very easy to get trapped in the middle of nowhere. These extreme conditions are not suitable for rental cars.

Interesting Places Near Dynjandi

  • Bíldudalur Village
  • Sea Monster Museum
  • Jón Sigurðsson Memorial   Museum
  • Simbahöllin Café

Dynjandi Waterfall and the rest of the Westfjords are quite isolated but for history buffs – around the base of the falls you can still find the remnants of an old turf house farm called Bæjarhóll (Farm Mound), and the ruins of what is left of a couple of outbuildings.

If you just so happen to be into your monsters, make sure to check out the nearby Bíldudalur Village, where you can visit the Sea Monster Museum .

If more conventional museums are more of your things, then there’s the Jón Sigurðsson   Museum, which is free and not too far away. The museum is dedicated to Jón Sigurðsson,  the independence leader, as well as Icelandic history, consisting of a  museum, traditional Icelandic house, and a church .

Dynjandi Waterfall

Simply enthralling; The Westfjords' favourite front-page model for decades, and is never short of breathtaking. The biggest and widest part of the waterfall is the one that gets all the attention and the photos, even though there are impressive, albeit smaller, waterfalls further down the river. In fact, one is formed in such a way that the brave can walk behind it, relatively dry.  To enjoy, follow this simple step-by-step manual. 1. Stop your car at the parking lot. 2. Walk all the way up to the biggest part of the waterfall, it takes about 15 minutes. 3. Take a deep breath and enjoy 4. Whenever ready, go back down to the car. 5. Tick off this article and continue working through the check-list.

Dynjandi waterfall Westfjords of Iceland

Deep in the remote Westfjords of Iceland, you will find the breathtakingly beautiful Dynjandi waterfall.

Dynjandi waterfall is the biggest waterfall in the Westfjords and truly deserves to be called the Jewel of the Westfjords.  It is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, at least the most majestic waterfall I have seen in my country.

Dynjandi waterfall in the Westfjords in northwest Iceland

Dynjandi waterfall

Dynjandi , or Fjallfoss as it is often called, cascades some 99-100 meters, looking exactly like a beautiful bridal veil. On top, it is 30 meters wide and widens up to 60 meters at the bottom.

There are 6 other waterfalls below Dynjandi, which one passes on the way up to the biggest waterfall. It is quite a scenic route with an elevation of some 200 meters up to the biggest waterfall.

The names of the other waterfalls are from above according to the map by the parking lot:

Hrísvaðsfoss

Kvíslarfoss

Bæjarfoss (Sjóarfoss)

You can see that all these waterfalls end in -f oss, which   is the Icelandic term for a waterfall.

To reach Dynjandi there is a bit of a hike, no more than 15 minutes or so though, and on the way up you can stop by all the smaller waterfalls.

A rocky path, made by volunteers back in 1996, leads up to the waterfalls and it is a bit of a climb getting all the way up to Dynjandi.

Hrísvaðsfoss waterfall by Dynjandi Westfjords of Iceland

Hrísvaðsfoss waterfall

Nothing major though, but if you have bad knees for example, then it can be taxing. The last time I visited Dynjandi a man with bad knees had to stop when he was halfway up and couldn't make it all the way to Dynjandi.

He didn't start on this hike in vain though as there are so many lovely waterfalls on the way, all of them marked and new observation platforms have been put up by many of them, where one can sit and rest and enjoy this wonderful scenery.

The Icelandic term  dynjandi  means thunderous or resounding and you will understand why when you hear the thunderous sounds of it in my video below.

There are many beautiful angles of Dynjandi and it is best to take photos of it with people in them so that you can see how huge this beautiful waterfall actually is.

It is said that a supernatural being lives in every waterfall. I can agree with this, at least there is amazing energy by the waterfall and I had a hard time tearing myself away from it.

Here below is a video that my husband shot at Dynjandi.

Dynjandi is preserved as a natural protected monument (since 1981). We are asked to stay on the paths to preserve nature and prevent this beautiful place from being downtrodden.

It is possible with great caution to walk behind Göngumannafoss waterfall. I have walked up to it and taken some photos, but never walked behind it, as from what I have seen there is very little space behind it.

Dynjandi waterfall Westfjords of Iceland

Dynjandi and Strompgljúfrafoss waterfall - this is one of my favourite photos

Dynjandi waterfall is located by Dynjandisvogur bay and Arnarfjörður fjord. Arnarfjörður fjord is 30 km long and 5-10 km wide and the second biggest fjord in the Westfjords.

Many bird species stay in this fjord in the summertime, and all in all 35 species have been registered in Arnarfjörður fjord.

Arnarfjörður is actually Iceland's most notorious sea monster fjord! In Bíldudalur village close by you can learn all about these sea monsters at the Sea Monster Museum. I have written another travel-blog just about Arnarfjörður fjord  and what to see and do in this long fjord.

Red rock by Dynjandi waterfall

Bright red layers of iron-rich soil by Dynjandi waterfall

Can you guess what you are seeing in my photos? You will see these vivid colours when you stand right next to Dynjandi, and I could see a glimpse of the same bright red colour in one spot in Dynjandi waterfall itself.

I have never seen such vivid red colours in nature before, ever so pretty. The red colour stems from ancient layers of soil ( rauðalög ) rich in iron, stuck between lava beds.

I also saw such red iron rocks close to Drangajökull glacier, Iceland's northernmost glacier: a Beautiful Hike to Drangajökull glacier in the Westfjords of Iceland .

Red rock in Dynjandi waterfall

Layers of soil rich in iron behind Dynjandi waterfall

I had wanted to see Dynjandi ever since I was a little girl, but then the roads were in a lot worse condition than they are today, so my family always skipped going to the Westfjords, even though my maternal grandmother  was born and raised there.

My 200th Travel Blog - Ingjaldssandur in the Westfjords - my Grandmother's Birthplace

So I waited for years to be able to see this beautiful waterfall and when I was finally able to visit Dynjandi it was all I had ever expected - it was so worth such a long wait - it is for sure the Jewel of the Westfjords . And no matter how often I visit Dynjandi I always get blown away by its majestic beauty.

Ruins of a turf farm

A turf farm by Dynjandi was located by the so-called  Bæjarhóll - the Farm Mound  and you can visit its remains. There are actually 38 different historical remains in this area and the first mention of a farm here is from the Middle Ages.

A path leads to the remains of the farm and outhouses. Above you will see the ruins of one of the outhouses.

You will find these remains on your right-hand side as you hike up to Dynjandi. In one spot there is a lukewarm pool, called Volgra or Dynjandislaug pool. It takes some doing though finding that pool and we are to stay within the paths, but seeing that I am very interested in old remains then I searched for the pool as well.

Volgra a.k.a. Dynjandislaug pool by Dynjandi waterfall

The protected Dynjandislaug pool

Volgra, which is laden, is protected, and of course, there is no bathing in it.

In 1887 the water temperature was measured at 26.5 degrees C and in 1996 the water temperature was down to 23.5 degrees C. It might have been warmer in the olden times and was probably used for washing and bathing. Now it is filled with vegetation.

What a beautiful spot for a farm, although I remember hearing that the farmer's wife couldn't stand constantly listening to the thunderous sound of Dynjandi. The turf farm was inhabited until 1951.

The information sign by Dynjandi waterfall

An information sign by the parking lot

By the parking lot, you will find several information signs and a map pointing to the ruins. But the waterfalls themselves are such an attraction that I gather that only history buffs like me will go search for the ruins ;)

Dynjandisheiði heath

To reach Dynjandi from the south-side one has to drive on Dynjandisheiði heath.  This road was surveyed in 1959 and my father-in-law was one of the Road Administration workers surveying these roads back then in the Westfjords.

This gravel road (number 60), which passes over Dynjandisheiði heath, leads from Barðaströnd in the south part of the Westfjords to Dynjandi waterfall. Its highest part is at 500 meters.

Dynjandisá river above Dynjandi waterfall Westfjords

Dynjandisá river above Dynjandi waterfall

The waterfalls in Dynjandi come from lake Stóra-Eyjavatn, which is 350 meters above sea level, from which Dynjandisá   river runs. Dynjandisá river is a direct runoff river and often such rivers have seasonal floods.

The floods in Dynjandisá take place in springtime and in winter, and then the volume of the river can increase up to tenfold, just imagine what Dynjandi waterfall looks like during these seasonal floods!

When driving north on the russet gravel road on Dynjandisheiði heath we are actually driving on top of the waterfall, so to speak.

Dynjandisheiði heath road Westfjords of Iceland

There are some pretty waterfalls above Dynjandi and the view from there of Arnarfjörður fjord and Dynjandisvogur bay is breathtaking. You can stop here and have a look at the waterfalls and enjoy the view.

In my photo below you can see one of the waterfalls in Dynjandisá river above Dynjandi waterfall.

Dynjandisá river above Dynjandi waterfall

Dynjandisá river above Dynjandi waterfall, this might be Kálfeyrarfoss waterfall

To reach Dynjandi from the north side of the Westfjords you will have to cross Hrafnseyrarheiði heath. So you can see that this magnificent waterfall is not easily reached, kind of tucked away between 2 heaths, which closes due to heavy snow in the wintertime.

Dynjandisheiði heath was opened for traffic on the 29th of March in 2017, but in 2015 it opened as late as in May, after being closed for 5 months! In my photo below you will see the steep, winding gravel road on Hrafnseyrarheiði heath. Just imagine what it must look like in the wintertime all covered in the deep snow!

It is, of course, difficult for the inhabitants of the Westfjords when the main road between north and south closes for such a long time. A new tunnel, Dýrafjarðargöng, opened in the year 2020 from Arnarfjörður to the next fjord  Dýrafjörður  and Þingeyri village .

Hrafnseyrarheiði heath Westfjords of Iceland

Hrafnseyrarheiði heath

That tunnel is 5.6 km long and they shorten Vestfjarðavegur road by 27.4 km.

It was especially difficult for the companies, which operate both on the north and the south part of the Westfjords. One fish processing had to drive around the Westfjords for 520 km (one way!) instead of the 115 km over the heaths to reach its destination on the other side of the Westfjords!

Other tunnels have made the Westfjords much easier to visit, like the Vestfjarðagöng tunnels, which were opened back in 1996. They connect Skutulsfjörður, Súgandisfjörður, and Önundarfjörður fjords and are altogether 9.113 m long ( Bændablaðið ). Then we have Bolungarvíkurgöng tunnel which opened back in 2010.

Gyrðisfoss waterfall in the Westfjords of Iceland

Gyrðisfoss waterfall

When you descend on Dynjandisheiði heath (or ascend for that matter if you come from the northern part of the Westfjords) you will see another lovely waterfall Gyrðisfoss  waterfall in Svíná river.

To reach the Westfjords you  rent a car in Reykjavík   and drive up to the Westfjords in a couple of days. Plan on spending at least 5 days here. Two summers in a row I spent 9 days in the Westfjords and we held a family reunion here in 2010.

Here you can see the location of Dynjandi waterfall on the map . Dynjandi is at a distance of some 363 km from Reykjavík.

More about the Tour

We start the tour by driving from Patreksfjordur cruise port straight to the majestic Dynjandi waterfall, one of Iceland’s prettiest waterfalls and the highlight of this tour. Actually a series of seven waterfalls falling like a bridal veil from the edge of a cliff, Dynjandi is breathtaking. The river originates from the Eyjavatn lake in the Glama moors, which was considered a glacier until the late 19th century. We stop for an hour so you can enjoy the waterfall and scenic landscape. If you choose, you can take the short hike for a closer look at the top tier and spectacular views of the fjord and surrounding mountains.

On the way back, we can stop in Vatnsfjordur for a view of the lake and the nature reserve surrounding it. The area is a nesting site for many wading birds and ducks, and home to other wildlife. It is also believed that this was the place where the Viking Hrafna-Floki, who first named Iceland, came ashore.

On this tour it is also possible to visit Hellulaug, one of the most unique geothermal bathing pools in Iceland. It is surrounded by rocks at the edge of the sea, and during high tide, seawater flows into the pool.

A scenic detour option is to drive back along the western coastal route and stop in the villages of Bildudalur and / or Talknafjordur.

Dynjandi Waterfalls in the Westfjords

Basic information.

Popularly known as the most beautiful attraction of Westfjords, Dynjandi waterfall is the biggest fall in the region. Also known as Fjallfoss, it is the first in a series of 7 waterfalls with a cumulative height of 100m, being 30m wide at the top and 60m wide at the base. While each of the waterfall beneath the main one on top is spectacular on its own, the cumulative effect of the seven falls is impressive and immersive. The sheer volume of water and its sound and power is surreal. Dynjandi in Icelandic means thunderous/resounding and the falls do justice to their name. The step-like composition and the crystal-clear water cascading the falls give the appearance of a beautiful bridal veil.

The Seven Falls of Dynjandi

Anyone who visits Dynjandi is sure to be in awe of its sheer size. The 6 waterfalls below it make up for a total elevated height of some 200m. The names of the sub-tiers in order are Strompgljúfrafoss, Göngumannfoss, Hríðsvaðsfoss, Hundafoss, and Bæjarfoss. Fun fact, all names end with the suffix foss, the Icelandic term for a waterfall. It is possible to walk behind Göngumannfoss (Gongufoss) while on the hike to the top.

Dynjandi Waterfall in Iceland: Height, Flow, Location, and Tours

Dynjandi is a waterfall located in the Westfjords of Iceland. This area is one of the most remote parts of Iceland and is difficult to gain access due to barring during certain months of the year. The name of the Dynjandi Waterfall in Iceland translates to ‘Thunderous’ in English because of its sheer size and volume.

This waterfall might not be one of the easiest to get to, but travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, and aspiring photographers all agree that it is well worth the trip to visit this waterfall. The waterfall is the largest in the Westfjords at a total height of 100 meters (330 feet) and seven drops. There are another five waterfalls below it, making the entire area a beautiful series of cascades.

What are the Tourist Activities for Dynjandi Waterfall?

If you decide to make the trip to Dynjandi waterfall, then you might as well enjoy the time you have in the Westfjords. This area isn’t the most accessible in Iceland so we recommend taking advantage of the time it took to reach the falls. The Westfjords provide tourists with some of the most surreal landscapes in all of Iceland

Other than the waterfall, you can visit the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve where you stand a chance of seeing the only mammal native to Iceland, the Arctic Fox. Close by, there are also the Latrabjarg bird watching cliffs. This is the best place in the country to see puffins on land since they nest in the cliffs. Remember, both ‌areas are protected, and be very careful while you visit them.

What are the Tours for Dynjandi Waterfall?

Almost any tour that takes you into the Westfjords will also take you to visit Dynjandi waterfall. That includes the tours from Wild Westfjords, Arctic Adventures, and Viator.

What are the Hotels for Dynjandi Waterfall?

Since this area is more sparsely populated, hotels are fewer and farther between than in other parts of Iceland. There are no hotels very close to the waterfall but some are short drives away such as Hotel Horn, Heydalur Hotel Egilsen, and Heydalur.

What are the Facts about Dynjandi Waterfall?

Dynjandi has been set apart as a National Monument of Iceland since 1981. That means you are strongly encouraged to respect the area and not to stray from the designated walking paths up to and around the waterfall. Iceland’s vegetation and ecosystem are incredibly fragile and can take decades to repair themselves once damaged. The idea is to take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints.

How to Hike Dynjandi Waterfall

You can drive quite close to the river and the waterfall when it is open during the late spring and summer months. However, it is almost impossible to reach during periods of heavy snow in the winter as it is tucked between two heaths. You can hike around the waterfall, but be sure to stay on the paths.

Is there a National Park for Dynjandi Waterfall?

There isn’t a national park near Dynjandi waterfall. However, there is the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, which is well worth a visit while you are in the area.

Which Canyons are Connected to the Dynjandi Waterfall?

There are no canyons associated with this waterfall as it pours over cliff after cliff towards the ocean.

Which Rivers are connected to the Dynjandi Waterfall?

The river that feeds this waterfall is the Dynjandisa river. It is a direct runoff river from glaciers in the area and is also fed by seasonal flooding. That means that the power of the waterfall exponentially increases during the flooding season in springtime and winter each year. The volume of the river can increase up to ten times during these periods.
