The end of one extraordinary Alaska experience brings the beginning of another for cruise passengers who set off on a land package after their Alaskan cruises disembark. The post-cruise packages listed below begin in Seward or Whittier , the two disembarkation points for northbound cruises sailing from Vancouver, BC . Some packages include transportation directly from the cruise terminal, while others, like Alaska Iconic Parks from Seward , start with a full day in the port town. These packages typically end in Anchorage so that travelers can easily connect with outbound flights.

These post-cruise land packages are chock full of sites grand enough to complement those seen while cruising through the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska . There's Talkeetna , Fairbanks , Anchorage and, of course, the beautiful Denali National Park . Along the way, visitors enjoy transportation between these Alaskan destinations by either train , deluxe motorcoach , and/or a rental car .

If you find a package that's ideal for your party, you can book it exactly as is. You can also customize your own trip based on where you want to go and what you want to see. Looking for more inspiration? Check out our Trip Finder tool. We offer numerous rail and motorcoach cruise transfer options between Anchorage and both Whittier and Seward, so nearly all of our packages that start in Anchorage can be modified to connect with cruises.

If you're still shopping for a cruise to bring you to mainland Alaska, you can use our Alaska Cruise Finder to search for options based on your preferred dates, routes , and cruise line .

Just a 10-minute walk from Pier 66 or a 25-minute bus ride (route 24) from Pier 91, historic Pike Place Market is a natural first stop. The multilevel market is a bustling mix of artisan craft and produce vendors, sweeping stands of technicolor flowers, locally owned shops, and live entertainment in the form of street buskers and wader-clad fishmongers slinging salmon. For scenic views of Elliot Bay and the Olympic Mountains, stroll the newly expanded MarketFront, which houses 47 new vendors and four new restaurants and a large outdoor plaza. Finally, no trip to Pike Place Market is complete without a picture near the red Public Market Center sign and clock at the entrance on First and Pike. Fuel up after your photo op with a latte from the original Starbucks or a bowl of signature mac and cheese from Beecher’s Handmade Cheese .

South of the market is tree-lined Pioneer Square , known as the city’s “original neighborhood” for its Gold Rush–era roots. Browse eclectic boutiques and art galleries—the First Thursday Art Walk is a local favorite. For a bird’s eye view of the city, visit the Seattle’s first official skyscraper  Smith Tower , with its Prohibition-inspired bar and 360-degree, open-air observation deck. Another sky-high options The Columbia Center Sky View Observatory, standing at 902 feet, is the highest public observation deck on the West Coast.

Heading back toward the pier, the Seattle Art Museum is a draw for art aficionados and casual museum-goers alike, with permanent collections and rotating exhibitions. The Olympic Sculpture Park on the waterfront is another downtown art mecca, offering a sprawling nine acres to stroll and enjoy larger-than-life art installations framed by glistening Elliott Bay.

The waterfront offers its own array of attractions, including fun gift shops, seafood joints like The Crab Pot and its “Seafeasts” of clams, mussels, and Dungeness crab, and the tall Seattle Great Wheel . Pier 57 is also home to Wings Over Washington , a “flying theater” experience that takes you on a virtual trip over Washington state’s most scenic sights. For an up-close look at the marine life native to Puget Sound waters, the Seattle Aquarium on Pier 59 is home to sea otters, a giant Pacific octopus, tide pools and more — a perfect way to round out your Seattle experience.

For foodies, Eat Seattle food tours offers a variety of options, from walking tour of South Lake Union to a Pike Place Market eating extravaganza.

For self-guided touring, start at the Seattle Center on the north edge of downtown. Surrounding the Space Needle is Chihuly Garden and Glass , housing works by internationally renowned glass artist and Pacific Northwest native Dale Chihuly; the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) , a mecca for music and pop culture fans; and the Pacific Science Center , a family favorite with exhibits on everything from the human body to tropical butterflies. Music lovers can stop in at the KEXP radio headquarters to watch live broadcasts and do-gooders will enjoy the nearby Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a global perspective on health, poverty, and education.

A short walk away is the South Lake Union neighborhood. Known as a tech and biomedical hub (Amazon, Facebook, and Google are all located here, along with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center), the area is also home to the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) with exhibits delving into Seattle’s unique past; The Center for Wooden Boats , where you can rent sail boats and rowboats; and REI ’s flagship store, complete with an indoor climbing wall. The expansive waterfront park on Lake Union is a perfect spot to watch Kenmore Air seaplanes take off from the water.

Nearby Capitol Hill is the city’s LGBTQ hub and one of Seattle’s trendiest neighborhoods, with rainbow crosswalks, a thriving music scene, and an array of hip restaurants, bars, and boutiques. When it comes to dining, options range from steak and seafood spots to local staples like Dick’s Drive-In for a quintessential Seattle burger and fries. Two-story Elliott Bay Book Company is a haven for lit lovers, and the local stores along Pike and Pine Streets are chock-full of artisan wares and spots to grab a drink or bite between browsing. For a look behind the scenes of java juggernaut Starbucks , take a tasting tour at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery & Tasting Room .

South of Capitol Hill is the Chinatown–International District , well worth a visit for its diverse mix of shops, art galleries, and food. It’s easy to spend an hour in Uwajimaya , a Japanese grocery store where you’ll find popular Asian foods, pastries, gifts, and authentic fare. Wing Luke Museum is another cultural anchor of the neighborhood, offering guided tours of exhibits spanning the life of Bruce Lee to the history of Asian Americans in sports.

6-Hour Itinerary Ideas

Half a day to explore gives you time to discover scenic parks, hip neighborhoods, and historic landmarks a bit farther afield.

Discovery Park in Magnolia is a short taxi or car-sharing ride from Pier 91. At 534-acres, it’s Seattle’s largest park, with a variety of scenery from beaches and bluffs (plus a picturesque lighthouse) to dense forest and wildflower meadows. To see it all, take a stroll around the three-mile Discovery Park Loop Trail.

From Discovery Park, it’s a 10-minute taxi or car-sharing ride to the Ballard neighborhood, known for its maritime and Scandinavian roots. Taste craft beer and spirits at one of the many breweries and distilleries or make your way through the artisan boutiques on Ballard Avenue. While there, stop in at Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery for a sweet pick-me-up. The Ballard Locks are one of the city’s most iconic settings, where visitors can view boats being lifted between fresh and salt water and watch salmon making their way up the “fish ladder” on their own passage through the locks.

Fremont Troll Amelia Vaughn Photography

Neighboring Fremont holds court as one of Seattle’s most eclectic neighborhoods—just ask the Fremont Troll sculpture lurking under the Aurora Bridge. It’s also home to several local hot spots like coffee shops and family-friendly Fremont Brewing Company (close to the Troll), and sandwich shop Paseo , which serves Caribbean-style pork numbers that have a cult following.

post cruise tour

Washington Park Arboretum Amelia Vaughn Photography

Head east towards the University District , where the Washington Park Arboretum is tucked away on the shores of Lake Washington.  Wander easily accessible walkways through 230 acres of plant varieties from around the world or rent a boat from the nearby Waterfront Activities Center and paddle the marshlands at the edge of the lake.

Back at the downtown waterfront, a 12-minute water taxi trip across Elliott Bay takes you to West Seattle . Take in an entirely new vantage point of the Seattle skyline from Alki Beach , walk the 2.5-mile path down the waterfront. Take the free shuttle up to the Junction , West Seattle’s hub of boutiques, restaurants, and antique shops along California Avenue and Alaska Street. There’s often a line at Bakery Nouveau (the twice-baked croissants are worth the wait), while Easy Street Records is a must-visit for if you’re into vinyl. Grab a bite and a tropical cocktail at Marination ma kai , a Hawaiian-fusion spot with a waterfront patio perfect for summer days, while you wait for the water taxi back to downtown Seattle.

Custom Group Tour - Japanese Design: Study Tour

5/29/2023 - 6/9/2023 / 2023-05-29

I hired All Japan Tours to organize the art tour which I curated. We worked on it for two years as this was a complicated trip with a lot of different locations, strict schedule, private viewing, and everything had to be on the highest level of hotels and food. The job that Kiyoshi and his team have done is exceptional. It was so well organized that everything was on time. They are flexible, detail oriented, and lovely to work with.

Japan Custom Group Tour

5/21/2023 - 5/30/2023 / 2023-05-21

If you want one of the best tours of your life go with All Japan Tours and ask for Miss Kim. We went for our honeymoon and Miss Kim made it unforgettable. We experienced more than we could have imagined and she was exceptionally helpful and informative. Japan is the most beautiful place we have seen in our lives, and when we got home we missed both the country and Miss Kim. Thank you for all that you have done. We hope to come back again! You really made our honeymoon memorable.

Custom Group Tour

5/11/2023 - 5/24/2023 / 2023-05-11

The guide and bus driver were exceptional.

Everything about the tour was amazing! Our guide Miharu was a very big part of making the tour so fantastic. Her knowledge, guidance, assistance, storytelling, friendliness -- I can go on and on, and especially her humor and comedic skills had us all laughing and wanting more. She never failed to have an answer to our questions. Driver Harada-san was also so accommodating and pleasant to have as our driver -- he had the softest hands! I loved all the "hand on" activities - doing bonsai, woodcarving, making kamaboko, making tatami, dancing. It was also so special that Miharu was able to have the beautiful Japanese singer fly in just to entertain us on the bus. That was so special and I'm sure something that is not done for all tours.

Ms. Kawaguchi

Our tour was carefully curated to meet the diverse interests of our group. We had a group of family and friends, many who have traveled to Japan together several times before with a different company. AJT was by far superior in the sites and experiences they provided. The local tour guide was informative and funny and took the extra steps to make sure our tour would be memorable. We will definitely use AJT for our next trip. Thank you

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

One killed, 10 injured when shuttle bus driver mistakes gas for brake at Hawaii cruise terminal

O ne person was killed and multiple others injured Friday when a shuttle bus driver in Hawaii mistook the gas pedal for the brake — plowing into nearly a dozen people waiting at a cruise terminal.

The 57-year-old driver had just dropped off a group of passengers at Honolulu’s Pier 2 terminal around 10:30 a.m. and had exited the bus when a bystander warned him that the car was rolling forward, the city’s police said.

The driver jumped back in the shuttle, but in the frenzy “pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes and collided with two concrete barriers and eleven pedestrians.”

A 68-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to her injuries.

Four others — in their 50s and 60s — were hospitalized in serious condition, while a man in his 70s was listed as stable.

The remaining pedestrians were bandaged at the scene.

The youngest victim is in their 40s, EMS said.

Police said speed does not appear to be a contributing factor to the crash, and are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Honolulu police could not immediately confirm whether the victims were tourists, telling The Post that the pier is located in a popular commercial area.

The investigation is ongoing.
