Road King Classic: which tour pak should I get?

  • Add to quote

I have an 06 RKC and want to have a detachable tour pak for long distance trips. I don't like the look of the smaller leather tour pak and I want more space. I like the Premium Leather Tour Pak because it seems to match the leather theme of the classic. My concern though is 1) I haven't seen one on a RKC so I don't know what it looks like together, 2) there seems to be a clearance problem when opening the saddle bags. Or, should I put an Ultra Tour Pak on? Not sure mixing the leather with the hard case is a good look though. If someone has experience with this I would love some feedback. Pix would be great too. One of the things I love about the RK is that I can take things off or put them on according to my needs. So the bike always looks different. Thanks. Dave

Leather would look right. :thumbsup

A friend put on the tour pack for a ultra on his RKC, looks ok, he also put on the lower fairings, all painted the same as his bike, he does have a problem with opening the sadle bags all the way. They open about 70% and he does complain that they don't open all the way.

Jacket4256

tell your friend he can mount spacers on the mounting portion of tour pack to give extra room, and to the op i would do leather bc it matches your bags

Vettster

Why worry too much about it matching? (OK, OK same paint) Get the biggest one you can fit.(King) Like you say, It's only for trips and it is detachable.

Those are all great points. Thanks. Bigger is better when it comes to storage right? I'm leaning toward the Premier Leather Tour Pak, the big one. It would look hot too.

....... what about the leather TP that came on the '07 CVO's ? Is that the same as the 'Premium Leather' ? I see'm on Ebay every now&then.

SoylentGreen

I have a Genuine King tour-pak, back rest, and lock set for sale if you're interested. jack chicago

I wifey goes along, you still won't have enough room, get the biggest that will fit.

Best thing I ever did to my FLHR, was the king pack. I never take it off, its just to handy. If you do plan on taking it off, I would consider the king pak, since it is bigger. Though changes are, once you see how handy it is, you won't take it off. Tourpak opens easy, and is at the right height, and big enough for everything. Do the buckles get annoying on that one?

Captain Bligh

I bought a king tour pack for my Road King last summer. My purpose was to make my wife more comfortable on long distance tours, although it is certainly convenient for extra storage. I DO take my pack off whenever my wife is not with me, which is frequently. I think the weight of the tour pack up high changes the handling characteristics of the bike leaving it top heavy and not quite so nimble. I'll put it back on for the next tour when the wife goes with me, but otherwise it's staying off.

Yep, thats what I got. I don't notice any increased weight. I find its just to handy for every day use, to take it off.

SJ-Jim

I put the Leather Tour Pak on my 2006 Road King and we love it. The wife and I take plenty of 2 or 3 night trips and packing the essentials is much easier.

all that you have to add is one aditional docking point to add a detachable tourpac if you already have a detachable sissy bar. the tourpac uses one of your other docking points that you already have. i dont have the part number. but it is a chrome bar that mounts where your side strut bolts are and also to the rear chrome fender down struts.. head

53804-06 is the part no. for the mounting hardware for using HD's two-up detachable tour pak rack. It doesn't use the mounting hardware already on your bike for the backrest. Check page 369 of the HD P&A catalog. I use a two-up detachable tour pak rack from Milwaukee Bagger for my King tour pak. It uses the same mounting hardware as the backrest which is what I wanted because I seldom have the tour pak on the bike and I hate the chrome hoops sticking out the back of the bike in the 53804-06 hardware. Here's the link to the MB rack: http://www.milwaukeebagger.com/Tour_Packs_s/36.htm After I bought my rack MB changed the listing to omit reference to King tour paks. I talked to Nick, the owner of MB, and he told me there haven't been any cases of failure of the rack, but the folks who make the rack for him were concerned with buyers overloading the King tour pak. Good luck with your research and choice. Carl

Thanks you guys! The MB mounting kit is probably the way to go so one mount fits all...Jez, why can't HD just make this $hit easy. It's like roots on a weed, part A won't fit part B. Thanks for the leads! Paul

Do these things come with a passenger back rest (even very basic) or are they bare and you need to buy one. All the photos show a back rest, but one never knows with HD.

the leather one for the classics comes with a small backrest that looks pretty good. if youre talking about 2 up mounting, once again, all you need to add is one docking mount if you already have a detachable sissy bar. i am sure of this. ive had a 98 and an 06 with the same setup on both. if youre adding it as a solo mounted detachable, i cant help you there. head

texastooltime

Go with the King. I have the King tourpack with detachable mounts as well as a detachable backrest for short runs 2 up. I only use the tourpack for road trips with my old lady. I have the SAC bag from Harley that velcros to the tourpack rack. We can pack for a week with that setup and still have our leathers and rain gear, tool bag, air compressor, plug kit, etc. too. The passenger backrest is a separate item from HD as is the rack as there are several different one's that will match your seat if you desire. Mustang also makes them to match their seats. There is no substitute for the comfort for the passenger with the wraparound and it is nice to stay gone a week and not have to go to a laundry while on the road. You will get used to the loops being on the back. I have a laydown plate mount and usually run bob-tailed without the OL and that cleans up the look of the rear without relocating the plate below the tail light. Check with Chicago HD, Zanotti's HD, or Suyrdyke HD and get 20% or more off everything, plus no sales tax if you are not in their state. It will just about cover the shipping.

We're arriving next Friday.

Would you say it's feeling "Spring-like" yet, or is it still feeling like WINTER?!!

Is there still snow on the ground? A little? A lot? Are the sidewalks clear?

I'm thinking I will pack my black wool peacoat (about right for temperatures near freezing and a bit below) + scarf + light gloves.

For footwear I think I will bring my "sturdy walking shoes". They are leather and have thick soles to lift me up above slushy or moderately snowy conditions (a few centimeters).

Is the ground SO wet that I would risk soaking my shoes and needing a second pair? (We tend to pack VERY light!)

Is there so much snow/slush on the sidewalks that I would need snow boots or hiking boots (these aren't as comfortable to me for walking).

My teen son is thinking to bring bother sneakers with thick soles, and a pair of hiking boots. Good idea? Hiking boots not needed?

He's also planning on bringing a medium/lighter weight wool coat. Should I make him bring his honest-to-goodness "Winter" coat? (it's a ski jacket)

We're also looking to visit the Bunker 42 because it looks like a HOOT and should be a nice break from palace-and-cathedral overload. It's kind of pricey for 90 minutes, but what the heck, we came all this way. :)

If you're interested in joining us for either, let me know.

We fly in Friday night. Take the train out Tuesday afternoon to StP. Fly out of StP on Easter morning (USA).

Are you doing anything else interesting-for-teens while in Russia?

Thanks for bringing up the clothing question, as I leave shortly after you.

Hi Diane! You found me on TA! :)

So with this weather thread working, let me ask the same question for mid May: what tdo you predict 6 weeks from now? Surely the snow is gone and it's 50 to 60 F??

leather tour pack for road king

I would strongly suggest folks use any of a number of web based historical weather sites to get an idea of Russian weather...I can not imaging how anyone even living there could tell you what the weather is going to be like any better than historical averages...

I live in Minnesota, and if anyone had suggest we would have 65-80 degree weather for 2-3 weeks in March, I would have asked them to share whatever they were ingesting, drinking, smoking, etc...it has snowed in mid-May here as well...so go figure!

leather tour pack for road king

Hope you have a great trip!

(Will you be writing a trip report when you return? I'd be interested to know how it went! Sadly, I'm hopeless at them - I never get around to writing one myself because I've always started planning my next trip before the one I'm on has even finished - but I love reading other people's!)

I actually use the "Russian Google" - Yandex...have found it to be more accurate...keeping in mind "accurate" as relates to weather forecasts is in and of itself an oxymoron...

http://pogoda.yandex.ru/moscow/

While yes it in Russian, think self-explanatory...recalling the degrees are C not F...
