Wondering why Tron was so successful at #PTLOTR?

The answer is in the build and the team - Team Handshake has been the best squad on the PT for the past two years.

Their Tron build had a 70+% winrate.

Everyone else's was sub-50%.

Green Tron is a strategy that revolves around assembling the three lands Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant, and Urza's Tower to generate seven mana as early as turn three. Thanks to cards like Expedition Map, Ancient Stirrings, and Sylvan Scrying, finding those pieces is trivially easy. Multiple draw effects like Chromatic Star and Chromatic Sphere allow you to dig deeper into the library, further increasing the consistency. The deck has also been known to mulligan to as few as three or four cards and still manage to win such games on the back of its powerful payoffs. Speaking of payoffs, a bunch of options exist to ramp into, but some are seen more frequently than others. Karn, the Great Creator is a popular threat in Tron strategies thanks to the flexibility that comes with his wishboard. With so many artifacts waiting to be grabbed from the sideboard, you can adjust your plan to whatever the opponent is doing. Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is the best go-over-the-top planeswalker in the game, and this deck can deploy him as early as turn four. He's difficult to get rid of and brings a powerful mass-removal effect to the table. There are multiple other expensive cards in the deck, and all of them close the game quickly. It's not all about expensive threats though. With The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth the deck has received The One Ring, which is a great tool for those times when you do not have the titular Tron trio. Since everything revolves around assembling those three lands, getting protection for one turn might just be enough to complete that mission. On top of that, you make sure you do not run out of threats with the card draw The One Ring provides. It also has some synergies with the deck such as the fact that it does not get destroyed by Oblivion Stone or exiled by Ugin's minus ability. Filip Skórnicki - Modern Deck of the Week: Ring Tron - Card Market - 29-06-2023

Given The One Ring's impact on Middle-earth, it's hard to imagine a card better suited as the set's strongest addition to Modern. It's basically Time Walk and Ancestral Recall stapled into a single card, and due to its colorless nature, The One Ring can fit every possible deck. After preventing you from taking damage and being targeted for a turn, the card allows you to draw three cards for the cost of one life, or six cards for the cost of three life. As you churn through your deck, you can use evoke Elementals or other pitch spells as free spells to defend yourself, transforming card advantage into mana advantage. And once the burden of using The One Ring becomes too great, you can play a new copy, using the legend rule to your advantage by casting the old one into the fire. Mono-Green Tron is a ramp deck centered around the "Urzatron"–Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant, and Urza's Tower. This powerful trio of lands was first dubbed the "Urzatron" in the 90s as a reference to the Voltron TV series, in which robots combine to become stronger. Together, the lands enable you to ramp into powerful cards like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger ahead of time. A turn three Karn Liberated is also enormously powerful, although many players have cut this once-essential planeswalker to make room for The One Ring. The introduction of The One Ring has been a major boost for Mono-Green Tron. It fits perfectly into a deck that can generate a lot of colorless mana and wants to bridge towards its powerful late game. Buying an extra turn is particularly valuable when your land drops tap for two or three mana. Thanks to Karn, the Great Creator's ability to grab it from your sideboard, the deck effectively runs seven copies of The One Ring in the main deck. Another reason for Mono-Green Tron's rise is the resilience it has against opposing Rings—Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger still will go over the top while Karn, the Great Creator prevents opposing Rings from being activated. In addition, Four-Color Omnath and Living End are traditionally good matchups for Tron, so the metagame has become more favorable overall. Frank Karsten - Metagame Mentor: Modern And The Lord Of The Rings - WOTC Website - 20-07-2023

The most-played archetypes are Rakdos Evoke and Four-Color Omnath, which make good use of the newly added Orcish Bowmasters and The One Ring, respectively. In last week's format primer, which introduces the game plans for all top Modern archetypes in more detail, I explained that Rakdos Evoke and Four-Color Omnath were the most prominent Modern archetypes in the weeks leading up to the event. So, their popularity at the Pro Tour is not a big surprise.Yet Modern has been evolving rapidly. Compared to last week's metagame snapshot, Mono-Green Tron and Temur Rhinos have surged in popularity for Modern players , and Dimir Control has emerged as a major contender. The most-played nonland cards across all main decks and sideboards were The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters. These new cards from The Lord of The Rings: Tales of Middle-earth™, which have been adopted in a variety of decks, are even more popular than long-time format staples like Fury, Chalice of the Void, Misty Rainforest, and Force of Negation. With these changes, even time-tested decks are being forced to adapt. The One Ring, after preventing you from taking damage and being targeted for a turn, can quickly bury the opponent in card advantage. The card has led to a resurgence of Four-Color Omnath, Mono-Green Tron, Dimir Control, Jeskai Breach, Esper Control, and various other decks. These decks are the best at exploiting the legendary artifact, by either bouncing it with Teferi, Time Raveler, grabbing it from the sideboard with Karn, the Great Creator, combining it with a huge number of free pitch spells, and/or looping multiple copies with Emry, Lurker of the Loch. After all, once the burden of using the Ring becomes too great, you can use the legend rule to your advantage. Mono-Green Tron (24 players): The archetype that won the previous Modern Pro Tour is built around the trio of Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant, and Urza's Tower—dubbed the "Urzatron" in the 90s as a reference to the Voltron TV series—which together unlocks seven mana by turn three. Frank Karsten - Pro Tour Lord Of The Ring : Modern Metagame Breakdown - WOTC Website - 27-07-2023

Tron is back. Well, it never left, but, four years after it won the last Pro Tour in Barcelona in the hands of Thoralf Severin, the deck is enjoying a resurgence of popularity thanks to The One Ring. The powerful artifact has joined a deck stuffed full of them. Iit turns out that one plus one plus still equals seven. Everything old is new again. Take for instance Karn, the infamous turn-three threat deployed by Tron for over a decade. But at Pro Tour The Lord of The Rings, the Karn in question is Karn, the Great Creator, rather than the traditional Karn Liberated, which has been relegated to also-ran status as the deck configures itself around a Karn "wish board." In 2023, Tron plays out like something more akin to a control deck than a ramp deck. The flexibility offered by Karn – plus the sheer power of The One Ring – puts Tron in a truly unique, but somehow familiar, position. The other big winner this weekend was Rakdos Evoke with Orcish Bowmasters. The shell of Grief, Fury, and Feign Death was a staple Modern strategy, and its ability to deal with The One Ring proactively made it the anti-Ring choice of the weekend. With three copies of Mono-Green Tron squaring off against three builds of Temur Rhinos – plus Dominic Harvey on Amulet Titan and Jake Beardsley piloting Rakdos Evoke – the Top 8 is sure to feature both Modern's classic archetypes along with its newest additions. Corbin Hosler - Pro Tour Lord Of The RInds : Day Two Highlights - WOTC Website - 29-07-2023

It took Christian Calcano years of Grand Prix success to earn his first, and only, Top Finish with a Top 8 appearance in Pro Tour Amonkhet in 2017. It's taken only five years for him to do it again here at Pro Tour The Lord of The Rings, though his route was certainly circuitous. The American, while on a vacation to Europe, played in a Regional Championship Qualifier which led to returning for the Legacy European Championship in Athens last month where he earned an invitation to the battle in Barcelona. It was a long road, but one built on his appetite to compete the world over. WOTC - Pro Tour Lord Of The RInds : Top 8 Players and Decklists - WOTC Website - 30-07-2023
