Queens Of The Stone Age add intimate acoustic show to 2024 Australian tour

A black and white portrait of rock band Queens Of The Stone Age

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Queens Of The Stone Age will be back in Australia next month, with a string of massive rock shows locked in around the country.

They've just added a special new date, with Hobart audiences getting a second show when the band are in town for MONA FOMA.

As well as their big, sold out outdoor show, the band will play an intimate show inside MONA, which has always been a happy place for the group.

"I want to play acoustically," Josh Homme said in a statement today.

"I love to play Mona. It's a chance to do something nice and this is a situation where it's very simple to do something nice."

That nice thing is raising funds for the  Royal Hobart Hospital Children’s Services and 24 Carrot Gardens, who will receive all the money from this special show.

It happens at MONA on Thursday 15 February and tickets are on sale now. Scroll down to see all the band's Aussie dates.

Care to spend the summer with rock gods Queens Of The Stone Age and some ass-kicking special guests?

Fresh from the release of their new album, In Times New Roman… , QOTSA have locked in plans to return to Australia for 'The End Is Nero' tour, extending the apocalyptic ' Rome is burning! ' messaging of their eighth full-length record.

Josh Homme and his formidable bandmates – Troy Van Leeuwen , Dean Fertita , Michael Shuman , beast drummer Jon Theodore – hit our shores from February, playing venues and outdoor shows in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, MONA FOMA in Hobart and two shows in Brisbane!

Queens Of The Stone Age also head up an expanded bill of acts for Lookout concerts in Torquay, Victoria and on the Gold Coast. More on that right after this handy reminder of why QOTSA are one of the most widely revered rock acts on the planet.

Some excellent special guests have been lined up to support QOTSA at each show.

There's few better warm-up acts than psych rock cosmonauts Pond , fronted by the magnetic, bug-eyed Nick Allbrook and pulling from an acclaimed catalogue now nine albums deep .

You've also got emerging Melbourne/Naarm five-piece Gut Health . The Unearthed faves fuse angular post-punk and new wave sounds with a menacing charm (you need to hear 'Uh Oh' ), which makes for a riotous, infectious live show.

In addition to Pond and Gut Health, two of QOTSA's dates will feature alt-rock national treasures Spiderbait , who are sounding as match-fit as they've ever been, Josh Homme's ol' pub-punk mates The Chats , as well as young grunge-pop idol Lola Scott .

The last time Queens Of The Stone Age were in Australia was 2018, for "the kind of rock show that would make a teenager want to start a band".

This was after a set at  Splendour In The Grass , where triple j proclaimed they "remain one of the most visceral, vicious, sexiest things to ever happen to rock music, and still among the top tier doing it."

Fans have had their fingers crossed that a new album meant another visit Down Under, and the feeling's been mutual for QOTSA's frontman.

"Look, Australia is my home away from home. It has been for 16, 17, 18 years… I can't wait to get there," Homme told Double J earlier this year in a candid interview  covering what's been some of the lowest points of his career.

In recent years, Homme was diagnosed with cancer, saw close friends die (such as  former QOTSA bandmate Mark Lanegan , Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins , and food and travel icon Anthony Bourdain ), and began a messy public custody battle with ex-wife Brody Dalle.

"I learned an awful lot in the last four or five years," Homme said. "I don't think I've ever learned so much in such a short period of time."

He took those lessons and funnelled them into the emotional exorcisms of  In Times New Roman… , cultivating Homme's ongoing realtionship with cathartic music-making.

"It's totally worth it because it works. I don't have a therapist: this is my religion, this is my therapy, this is my way out."

You can share in one of Homme and co's patented rock 'n' roll sermons at the following dates on the Queens of the Stone Age 2024 Austarlian tour.

Tickets are on sale Monday 30 October, 1pm local time. There's a pre-sale kicking off from 25 October. Find more info at the Live Nation website .

This comes after last month saw QOTSA frontman Josh Homme share a new and rare public statement about his ongoing legal battle with ex-wife Brody Dalle .

The pair have been involved in a long-running public battle for custody of their three children. Both Dalle and Homme filed their respective restraining orders against each other in 2021, while Dalle was  convicted in November of that year of one count of contempt  by a Los Angeles judge for “wilfully” failing to hand her five-year-old son over to Homme in September as part of an agreed custody deal.

In Homme’s new and lengthy statement, he revealed that a new permanent restraining order was granted against Dalle for a period of one year and 11 months, meaning she is not allowed to contact the Homme family, including Josh, his parents and the former couple’s three children – adding that: “The goal of the Los Angeles Family Court System and Joshua Homme’s sincere hope is that the conclusion of this matter will result in the ability for both Homme and Dalle to co-parent their children peacefully.”

Homme

More recently, Josh Homme appeared onstage at Wembley Stadium as part of the  Foo Fighters -curated  Taylor Hawkins tribute concert . First he covered  David Bowie ’s ‘Let’s Dance’ with a  Nile Rodgers -led band before  reforming Them Crooked Vultures for a three-song set.

News of new material from Queens Of The Stone Age is expected this year. Last year, QOTSA bassist Michael Shuman confirmed to NME that there was “new stuff coming “, while Eagles Of Death Metal’s Jesse Hughes also confirmed to a fan that a Queens record was “done”.

Last year saw the band reissue three albums of vinyl : their 1998 self-titled debut, their 2013 record ‘ Like Clockwork ‘ and their most recent album, 2017’s ‘ Villains ‘.

Meanwhile, Homme recently that  making an album with country musician Nikki Lane “saved my life” .
