Innovation prized on world tourism day.
Published Wednesday, 27 September, 2017 at 08:00 PM
Minister for Education and Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games The Honourable Kate Jones
Tourism Minister Kate Jones today announced Brisbane-based company EarthCheck, a world leader in its field, as the winner of the 2017 Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) Prize for Innovation in Tourism.
Ms Jones made the announcement as part of a special celebration to mark World Tourism Day at Flight Centre’s new corporate headquarters at South Bank in Brisbane.
“EarthCheck epitomises innovation through the work it is doing with government, business and industry to create safe and healthy destinations for tourist,” she said.
“Innovation is essential to keep Queensland’s tourism industry going from strength to strength which is why the Palaszczuk Government support this $30 000 prize.
“I am thrilled to announce EarthCheck as the QTIC winner prize for innovation in tourism for its Building Planning and Design Standard which enables the integrated assessment of environmental, social and economic impacts of a tourism project.
“Visitors expect safe, high quality and unique experiences, as well reassurance that the products and services they use have been sustainably sourced and operated.
“EarthCheck’s work has significant potential application across the entire tourism industry and is a great example of how Queensland is contributing to global solutions.
“Given that the theme for this year’s World Tourism Day’s is Sustainable Tourism , this makes EarthCheck a deserving winner.”
Ms Jones said the two runners up - Australian Age of Dinosaurs and Capricorn Caves - will receive support, advice and mentoring through TAFE Queensland’s Building Better Business program.
“Australian Age of Dinosaurs and Capricorn Caves both demonstrate innovative tourism product by combining education and research as part of their investment in new visitor experiences,” she said.
“They both cater to increasing visitor expectations for unique experiences, but also have the potential to enhance our understanding of the past and future through collaborative education and research efforts and to grow our $25 billion tourism industry.”
Ms Jones congratulated all 14 entries from across Queensland including Cairns, Capricorn, Outback Queensland, Whitsundays, Bundaberg and Brisbane.
“I applaud their ingenuity and commitment to ensure Queensland’s tourism industry remains competitive and continues to grow jobs,” she said.
CEO of the Queensland Tourism Industry Council Daniel Gschwind said unique and innovative attractions and experiences were essential to drive visitation and keep visitors in Queensland longer.
“The QTIC Prize for Innovation in Tourism is an opportunity for Queensland tourism businesses to be publicly acknowledged for their dedication to develop products, services or processes designed to drive our industry forward,” Mr Gschwind said.
“It’s fantastic to see EarthCheck claim the prize this year and be rewarded for an innovative process that it not only good for businesses, but is good for the planet.
“The QTIC Prize for Innovation in Tourism reinforces the importance of continually innovating to drive a competitive industry – an industry that employs 225 000 people.”

World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day was slightly different this year due to the ongoing pandemic as the industry has been hit hard financially and is learning how to recover from its effects.
Despite the uncertainty, the Queensland Tourism Industry Council marked the occasion with a celebration of the resilience of the industry. It drew attention to some of the many tourism operators who have adapted and innovated during the pandemic’s disruption.
QTIC Chief Executive, Daniel Gschwind , said, “Our industry is not just important to the economy but also to the life of communities and their wellbeing. Our cultural life, our events, our heritage and even our guardianship of our natural wonders is supported by tourism activity,” he said. “It is those workers and the tourism business operators who had to step up during this devastating time and try to keep businesses afloat and plan for a disrupted future.”
Tourism Minister Kate Jones said tourism was a significant focus of the government’s economic recovery strategy. “Tourism is absolutely vital to Queensland’s economy. I’ve seen first-hand how tourism operators have struggled throughout this pandemic,” she said. “World Tourism Day is usually a time for celebration. Today, it’s an opportunity to share the message that we’re all in this together. We’ll continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with operators to rebuild our industry for the future.”
The QTIC World Tourism Day Breakfast had 150 people in attendance to hear from industry experts and stories about some of the many tourism operators who have adapted their business during this pandemic. Mr Gschwind said, “Our industry will thrive again, the urge to travel is irresponsible, and Queensland’s operators are equally determined to bring out the best of what our state has to offer.”

Investing in People, Planet, and Prosperity
The overall disruption in the tourism sector brought about by COVID-19, provides an opportunity to redefine and recalibrate the direction and narratives of tourism investments for a more sustainable future for the People, the Planet, and prosperity.
This World Tourism Day 2023 , the UNWTO , under the theme “Tourism and green investment” highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for the Sustainable Development Goals , the UN roadmap for a better world by 2030. Now is the time for new and innovative solutions, not just traditional investments that promote and underpin economic growth and productivity.
Visit the World Tourism Organization’s website
The UN World Tourism Organization has prepared a website and digital materials for social networks. Let’s all contribute to promote tourism investments focused on achieving a better world for the benefit of all.
How tourism should invest to contribute to the SDGs
The possibilities of strategic investment for this triple dimension are immense:
For the People by investing in education and skills
Looking ahead, the global tourism workforce will require millions of hospitality graduates annually between now and 2030 and a further 800,000 jobs a year will require specific vocational training. For these reasons, we need to invest in people, as they are the foundation of tourism so that all those who wish to be part of the sector have the same opportunities to access quality tourism training, anywhere in the world.
For the Planet by investing in sustainable infrastructure and accelerating green transformation
Looking into the future, the need to reduce emissions provides an investment opportunity of $24.7 trillion in the green buildings sector of emerging market cities by 2030, in which hotels, resorts, and restaurants account for $1.5 trillion. In addition, tourism faces a lot more investment opportunities related to new solutions and technologies to decarbonize the sector as well as to ensure climate-resilient infrastructure through adaptation solutions.
For Prosperity by investing in innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship
Digitalization and innovation programs are a strategic priority to support particularly young people and women, which are critical to upskill the tourism sector’s workforce. Moreover, the global need to increase investments in programs that support and incentivize entrepreneurship and generate opportunities for innovations is highly need it in the tourism sector.
In order to succeed, let’s make this World Tourism Day a call to action to the international community, governments, multilateral financial institutions, development partners, and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy .
What is the Glasgow Declaration?
The Glasgow Declaration is a compromise to accelerate climate action in tourism and to secure strong commitments to support the global goals to halve emissions over the next decade and reach Net Zero emissions as soon as possible before 2050. Over 450 organizations have become signatories of this declaration.
Did you know?
- Tourism employs one in every ten people on Earth.
- Tourism in rural areas can particularly benefit traditionally disadvantaged groups such as women - who make up 54% of the workforce in the tourism sector compared to 39% for the whole economy - youth and Indigenous people.
- In emerging destinations, 50% of young people are unable to work in tourism due to a lack of opportunity, resources, or access to academic training.

An indigenous entrepreneur in tune with Mother Earth
After successfully reclaiming her people’s territory in Quebrada de Humahuaca, Northern Argentina, Celestina Ábalos turned to tourism to share and promote her indigenous culture. ILO entrepreneurship training during the COVID-19 pandemic helped her business to grow.
World Tourism Organization
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is a leading UN international agency in the field of tourism. Its mission is to promote tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide. Discover how they are working to cope with this pandemic along with the tourism sector and other UN agencies.
Why do we mark International Days?
International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. We also mark other UN observances .
UN Tourism | Bringing the world closer
Tourism for inclusive growth.
SAVE THE DATE | Monday 27 September 2021 | 10:00 AM (GMT)
Provisional Programme
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a massive social and economic impact. Both developed and developing economies have been hit. And marginalized groups and the most vulnerable have been hit hardest of all. The restart of tourism will help kickstart recovery and growth. It is essential that the benefits this will bring are enjoyed widely and fairly.
UNWTO has therefore designated World Tourism Day 2021 as a day to focus on Tourism for Inclusive Growth. This is an opportunity to look beyond tourism statistics and acknowledge that, behind every number, there is a person. UNWTO invites its Member States, as well as non-members, sister UN agencies, businesses and individuals to celebrate tourism’s unique ability to ensure that nobody is left behind as the world begins to open up again and look to the future.
World Tourism Day, celebrated each year on 27 September, is the global observance day fostering awareness of tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value and the contribution that the sector can make towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
Official Messages

World Tourism Day – September 27, 2024
Get your bulky cameras ready, unfold your maps and make sure your fanny pack still fits snugly. World Tourism Day every September 27, raises awareness of the need for accessible tourism all over the planet.
World Tourism Day is the result of the work done by the UN’s specialized agency — the World Tourism Organization (WTO). If you’ve ever strolled through a charming, perfectly-preserved European village or town, you’ve probably seen the WTO at work. Boosting local economies and ensuring sustainable tourism are but a few of the benefits of the WTO.
More importantly, on World Tourism Day, the WTO makes sure that travel is accessible for everyone, including those with disabilities and folks with low-income. Whether you’re walking with a cane or rolling in a chair; the world is open for business to you and your friends. So, get traveling!

World Tourism Day Activities
Treat a normal day like a vacation.
Today, take a step back from your normal routine and consider: If I were on vacation in my hometown, what would I do? Where would a tourist go for the day? By checking out your own turf through the eyes of a tourist, you’ll support local businesses and you may see your town from a new perspective.
Get the word out
The key to continuous improvement in global tourism is economic stability and sustainability. Educate yourself on the best ways to see a new country, city, or village in ways that create a positive impact.
Plan a trip
If you’ve been putting off that vacation, use World Tourism Day as an opportunity to make those plans. Talk to friends and family with special challenges, either physical, financial or both; who may want to travel but have never been able to plan a trip. Together, you can help and encourage each other, following the message of the WTO that tourism is for all.
Why We Love World Tourism Day
It creates jobs.
All over the world, even in its most remote corners, tourism has become a dependable source of jobs. In the U.S. alone, the travel, tourism and hospitality industry supported 7.6 million jobs in 2015. This means one out of every 18 Americans is employed in tourism. When done responsibly, tourism can create jobs in areas where unemployment has risen due to unavoidable factors like automation.
It’s a cash cow
In 2015, international tourism generated $1.5 trillion in export earnings. This can be a tremendous benefit for smaller, under-developed communities. Developing a sustainable tourism ecosystem is paramount for ensuring these earnings are distributed among the community. Thanks to the work of the WTO, these areas are seeing smart tourism strategies put in place.
It creates a better world
Sure, the site of yet another lost tourist in your hometown may induce a small groan, but the reality is that traveling and seeing new places is good for our minds and good for our society. So, start planning your next trip!

Tourism leaders gather in Bundaberg
Tourism leaders from across the state will come together in Bundaberg on 2 June to celebrate the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day.
Partnering with Bundaberg Tourism, the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) will be hosting its annual World Environment Day Breakfast at the Mon Repos Turtle Centre to champion sustainability within the tourism sector.
QTIC CEO Brett Fraser said the event will not only shine a light on the importance of safeguarding the natural environment but will also put the eyes of the state’s tourism industry on Bundaberg.
“The Bundaberg region is a jewel in Queensland’s ecotourism crown,” Brett said.
“What better place to recognise World Environment Day than in a region that serves as a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and is a staunch advocate of sustainability.
“Nature and tourism go hand in hand.
“Our international and domestic visitors are increasingly seeking wide open spaces and experiences that bring them closer to the natural environment.
“Bundaberg is excelling in this market.
“From our savannahs to our rainforests and Great Barrier Reef, the importance of the environment to our Queensland tourism brand is immense.
“It is imperative that we protect and safeguard our natural assets.”
Bundaberg Tourism CEO Katherine Reid said there was no better place to celebrate World Environment Day than the Bundaberg Region.
“With fertile landscapes, thriving wildlife and unique ecosystems, the Bundaberg Region is a living testament that each and every action counts.
“Supported by a community renowned for their unwavering commitment to sustainability, this is a great opportunity for the region to come together, reflect on our past accomplishments, inspire change and chart an even greener future.”
Earlier this year the Bundaberg Region was announced as an ECO Certified Destination , just the fifth area in Australia to do so.
Tourism operators and businesses are encouraged to secure tickets to the World Environment Day Breakfast through the QTIC website here .
The QTIC World Environment Day Breakfast is made possible through the generous support of sponsors, EarthCheck, Fun Over Fifty, and NRMA.

World Tourism Day still worth celebrating
Despite World Tourism Day looking a bit different in 2020 as the industry continues to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, Sunshine Coast businesses are still continuing to shine.
The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) marked the occasion with a celebration of the resilience of the industry and drew attention to some of the many tourism operators who have adapted and innovated during this dramatic disruption.
QTIC Chief Executive, Daniel Gschwind said, “Our industry is not just important to the economy but also to of the life of communities and their wellbeing.“
“Our cultural life, our events, our heritage and even our guardianship of our natural wonders is supported by tourism activity. And most of all, it is the lives and livelihood of the hundreds of thousands of workers in our industry that are at stake.“
Tourism Minister Kate Jones said tourism was a major focus of the Palaszczuk Government’s economic recovery strategy.
“Tourism is absolutely vital to Queensland’s economy. I’ve seen first-hand how tourism operators have struggled throughout this pandemic,” she said.
“World Tourism Day is usually a time for celebration.“
The QTIC World Tourism Day Breakfast had 150 people in attendance to hear from industry experts and stories about some of the many tourism operators who have adapted their business during this pandemic.
One of the businesses highlighted from the Sunshine Coast was Creative Tours and Events who introduced a new interactive food tours online – the ‘Meet the Maker at home’ virtual series.
Each experience delivered local produce to your door and was followed by an exclusive online session. These intimate virtual experiences allowed for a unique masterclass highlighting the local produce and producers of the region.
Owner of Creative Tours and Events Josh Donohoe said, “Our tour business closed for three months, as did the venues we visit. We decided to collaborate with local farmers, producers, brewers, and
distillers to create an online Meet the Maker at home experience.“
“Already having a strong network with local producers allowed us to collaborate on this idea fairly quickly. With no work whatsoever it was more down to idle hands and busy minds that lead to this series of events.
“We plan to continue offering these events locally, and also further afield.“

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?
Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.
The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.
The politics of place names
The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.
The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.
Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.
Dvorets Sovetov station, 1935. Letters on the entrance: "Metro after Kaganovich."
Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."
In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.
Kropotkinskaya station, our days. Letters on the entrance: "Metropolitan after Lenin."
New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.
Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.
Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.
Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.
Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.
The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.
At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.
"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .
“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."
The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.
What stations changed their name most frequently?
Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.
Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.
Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).
The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.
Alekseyevskaya metro station.
But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.
Okhotny Ryad station in 1954 and Prospekt Marksa in 1986.
In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.

Venice day-trippers will face steep fines if they fail to pay an access fee under a pilot program

MILAN (AP) — Day-trippers to the fabled canal city of Venice who fail to pay 5 euros ($5.43) to enter the lagoon city’s historic center during a time-limited pilot program launching later this month will face fines starting at 10 times the entrance fee, officials said Thursday.
Venice announced last year it would launch the long-discussed day-tripper fee after the city escaped being placed on the U.N. agency’s list of endangered heritage sites, due largely to the impact of overtourism. Officials have avoided calling it a tax, opting for softer words like contribution, and have downplayed the possibility of waits to enter the city, emphasizing there will be no turnstiles or physical barriers.
But during a press briefing, Mayor Luigi Brugnaro suggested lines could form at the official entry points, and used the word tax to describe the fee.
Brugnaro said personnel have been trained to verify that tourists who are not staying in Venice have either a QR code confirming payment of the fee or an exemption voucher. Exemptions will be issued for a variety of reasons, including to access the city for work, school or medical care, as well as to people born in Venice, and residents of the Veneto region.
Venice has long suffered under the pressure of overtourism, but officials say pre-pandemic estimates ranging from 25 million to 30 million visitors a year —including day-trippers — are not reliable and that the pilot project also aims to come up with more exact figures to help better manage the phenomenon. By contrast, registered visitors spending the night last year numbered 4.6 million, according to city figures, down 16% from pre-pandemic highs.
Visitors arriving at the main train and bus stations will first be met by stewards who will remind tourists of the new requirement and help anyone who hasn’t yet downloaded the QR code. Payment points will be set up for anyone without a smartphone.
Brugnaro said that anyone found beyond designated control points without the required documentation will be subject to fines. These will range from 50 to 300 euros (from around $55 to $326, depending on exchange rates), plus the maximum entrance fee allowed by law, set at 10 euros (nearly $11).
“There is no tax without controls,’’ Brugnaro told foreign reporters in Rome.
Visitors will be subject to random, not systematic, checks, he said.
“If someone turns himself into Batman and tries to enter, and enters all the same, he will not win a medal from me, but we will simply thank him for his rudeness,’’ the mayor said.
Officials have emphasized that the program aims to reduce crowds on peak days, encourage longer visits and improve the quality of life for residents. The fee is not required for anyone staying in Venice, including the mainland districts of Marghera and Mestre.
Venice’s islands, including glass-making Murano, are also outside the pilot program, which is being tested on 29 days, starting with an Italian national holiday on April 25 through mid-July, including most weekends, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No maximum number of visitors has been set in this phase.
Venice is launching an advertising campaign to inform visitors of the new obligation, featuring Brugnaro speaking a variety of languages aided by artificial intelligence. Visitors can register at the website, www.cda.ve.it , which is operating in five languages.
The pandemic delayed Venice’s plans to launch the day-tripper tax, which has become a keystone of the city’s attempts to deal with overtourism . UNESCO cited the plan when it decided not to include the city on the list of endangered world heritage sites last September, a tarnish that it similarly avoided two years earlier with the cruise ship ban through St. Mark’s Basin and the Giudecca Canal. Cruise ships brought 1.6 million people to Venice in 2019.
Brugnaro said many cities around the globe have contacted him for details of the plan, but that they asked not to be identified.
Activists sounded a warning last summer when the number of tourist beds officially overtook the number of residents, which has dwindled to under 50,000 in a trend dating back decades. They said the imbalance drains the city of services, clogging its tight alleyways and water buses with suitcase-toting tourists and pushing residents to the mainland with its conveniences.
