Concessions in Queensland

This page is about what concessions may be available to our clients in Queensland (QLD).

Who is eligible for concessions, health concessions, transport concessions, household concessions, vehicle concessions, more information about concessions, moving interstate.

The organisation that offers the product or service, e.g. your local council, decides what sort of concession is offered and to whom it is offered. DVA Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) and Veteran Gold Card  holders are usually eligible for concessions, but it is important to contact the organisation offering the concession to confirm your eligibility.

Treatment Cards

If you have a Veteran Gold Card or Veteran White Card  you should always use this card for medical, hospital, pharmaceutical and allied health services.

Pharmaceutical benefits

The rates quoted are current from 20 March 2024.

PCC holders are eligible for medication under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) at $7.70 per prescription. Your pharmacist can tell you which medicines are listed under the scheme. Premiums charged by manufacturers may apply to some alternative brands/medicines. Once you have spent the PBS Safety Net threshold amount on PBS medicines, you will receive free PBS medicines for the rest of the year.

National Diabetes Services Scheme

Hearing services

The Office of Hearing Services provides vouchers which enable you to get hearing assessments and devices from hearing service providers of your choice. This includes the cost of fitting the device. Public Transport Concessions

PCC and Queensland Veteran Gold Card and Veteran White Card holders are entitled to a concession fare for travel on Translink and regional ferry services. A concession fare is 50% cheaper than an adult fare.

TPI and EDA Veteran Gold Card holders must have a TPI/EDA Veteran Travel Card to receive unlimited free travel on approved Translink and regional ferry services.

Queensland Rail Travel

Queensland PCC and Veteran Gold Card holders marked War Widow/Widower are eligible for 4 long distance Queensland Pension rail travel entitlements per calendar year.

Queensland TPI or EDA Veteran Gold Card holders who have a TPI/EDA Veteran Travel Card, receive one free return trip each fortnight on long distance Queensland rail travel.

Australia Post

Australia Post offers a 40% discount on postage stamps, discounts on re-directing mail and deliver some items that aid the sight of people with a vision impairment free of charge, or at a discounted rate, for Veteran Gold Card, Veteran White Card and Veteran Orange Card holders. Telstra offer a number of concessions to PCC holders, including a discount on new telephone service connection fee and a reduction in your home line plan costs. For more information contact Telstra on 1800 676 442 or visit their website at www.telstra.com.au/home-phone.

Rates Subsidy

Queensland PCC and Veteran Gold Card holders may be eligible to receive a subsidy of 20 per cent (up to a maximum of $200 each year) of the gross rates and charges levied by your local council. For more information, contact your local council.

Water Subsidy

Eligible PCC and Veteran Gold Card holders may be eligible for a subsidy of up to $120 each year off the cost of water access and usage charges. For more information, contact your water retailer.

Motor Vehicle Registration

Queensland PCC holders and Veterans receiving at least 70% Disability Compensation Payment or who have at least 50 impairment points, may be eligible for a discount on the registration fee for one vehicle and one boat.

Motor Vehicle GST exemption

Once every 2 years or 40,000 km, eligible veterans are entitled to GST exemption on the purchase of a new car. GST exemption is also available on spare parts necessary for the running of a motor car. For more information refer to Supply of Cars and Car Parts GST Free .

State Seniors Card

Different concessions may be available for holders of Seniors Cards. All State Governments issue their own Seniors Card. The Seniors Card is issued free and provides access to savings on a range of goods and services provided by participating businesses. Seniors Business Discount Card

Travellers can save up to 60 per cent on the price of a ticket for long-distance train travel in Queensland following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, said Queensland Rail was reinstating reduced and suspended travel and tourism services gradually from June 13, with most services fully restored ahead of the school holidays.

“To celebrate long-distance services being reinstated, the Queensland Escape sale means Queenslanders are good to go with huge price discounts to support them to get out of the house, jump on a train and explore our great state,” Mr Bailey said.

“If you’ve ever wanted to head out to Longreach on the Spirit of the Outback or explore the tropics on the iconic Kuranda Scenic Railway, now’s your chance – and right in time for the school holidays.”

Mr Bailey said although services were ramping back up, measures implemented to help keep customers safe in response to the global coronavirus pandemic would remain.

“Social distancing measures will still be in place on all services, as will the heightened cleaning regime across the fleet,” he said.

“We want Queenslanders to relax and enjoy a holiday, but we also want them to remain safe.”

With more trains returning to the network, Mr Bailey reminded Queenslanders to be alert around level crossings.

“More services not only means more opportunities to travel, but also more activity at level crossings, so please be careful, especially if you live in regional Queensland where trains haven’t been running as often,” he said.

Queensland Rail’s Queensland Escape sale will be available for travel between 13 June and 12 July 2020.

Queensland Explorer Pass

The Queensland Explorer Pass gives you unlimited travel on most Queensland Rail Travel Train services in Queensland. Queensland has the best trains in Australia and this pass is valid on the fast Tilt Trains between Brisbane and Rockhampton and the new Spirit of Queensland trains that run between Brisbane and Cairns.

Where can I use this rail pass?

This pass is valid for unlimited travel on Queensland Rail Travel Train services including the following rail services:

• Tilt Train (Brisbane–Rockhampton)
• The Spirit of Queensland  (Brisbane–Cairns)
• The Spirit of the Outback (Brisbane–Longreach via Rockhampton)
• The Inlander (Townsville–Mount Isa)
• The Westlander (Brisbane–Charleville)

This pass includes the following connecting coach services:

• Maryborough–Hervey Bay
• Proserpine–Airlie Beach
• Barcaldine–Winton

The Queensland Coastal Pass includes one journey on Brisbane’s City rail network to connect with a Queensland Rail Travel Train service. This includes travel as far south as the Gold Coast.

When is the Queensland Explorer Pass valid?

This pass is valid for one or two months travel in economy seating. This rail pass is good for unlimited rail travel for the entire validity of the pass (not a set number of travel days or a set itinerary like many other rail passes). Travel must commence within six months of the date of purchasing this pass. The one or two-month travel period begins on the date that the pass is first used.

Who can use this rail pass?

The Queensland Coastal Pass is only available to overseas visitors to Australia. People travelling with this rail pass must be able to prove that they are not an Australian resident (a passport or drivers licence issued outside Australia will usually be sufficient proof).

Other important details about this rail pass

After purchasing the Queensland Coastal Pass you will receive a voucher that you need to exchange for the actual travel pass at a ticket office exchange location in Australia prior to commencing your first journey. Your exchange voucher will be emailed to you but it is best to allow 3–5 business days for your order to be processed prior to emailing your voucher.

Seat reservations must be made prior to each leg of travel.

The Queensland Coastal Pass is valid for economy class travel on most rail services. However it does cover premium economy travel on the Spirit of Queensland for bookings made within seven days of travel. Seat bookings made outside this time will incur an upgrade charge.

Pass holders may upgrade to business seats on the Tilt Train (between Brisbane and Rockhampton), RailBeds on the Spirit of Queensland and available sleeping berths upon payment of an upgrade fee.

Travel on the fast Tilt Train is only available between Brisbane and Rockhampton (and intermediate stops).

This rail pass cannot be used on heritage railways and tourist services such as the Kuranda Railway.

The Queensland Coastal Pass is only valid for travel on services operated by Queensland Travel Train. It is not valid for travel on Great Southern Railway, NSW TrainLink, V/line or TransWA services.

Score a Free Ticket on Florida's Brightline Thanks to Its BOGO Sale This Week — Here's the Promo Code

High-speed rail company Brightline is putting Orlando tickets on sale with a buy one, get-one-free offer on both its Smart and Premium fares — and it's not a prank.

The sale, which must be booked by April 6, is valid on travel to or from Orlando through May 31, Brightline shared with Travel + Leisure . To book, travelers must use the promo code “NOJOKE24” in the search box.

The sale represents the first time Brightline is offering a BOGO deal for its Premium tickets.

“This deal is the perfect time to try Brightline PREMIUM,” Barbara Drahl, the SVP of marketing and commercial strategy for Brightline, told T+L. “It’s an opportunity for our loyal guests and those new to Brightline to elevate their travel experience between Orlando and South Florida.”

To take advantage of the sale, passengers must book at least seven days in advance of traveling.

Brightline first launched in 2018 with service between West Palm Beach , Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, but has since expanded and added its newest route between Miami and Orlando late last year. The ride between the two cities takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes.

The company plans to add its latest station on the Treasure Coast in Stuart, Florida, in the second half of 2026.

Brightline offers the choice of “Smart” or “Premium” fares, and all Brightline trains come with complimentary onboard Wi-Fi. As an added bonus, Premium tickets include perks like a dedicated lounge at the departure station, priority boarding, checked luggage, and complimentary snacks and beverages. 

In addition to the sale, Brightline also offers several multi-use passes like the All-Station Shared Pass , which comes with access to each of Brightline’s stations, including Orlando; and the SoFlo Solo Pass, which includes access to south Florida stations.

Beyond Florida, the rail company is starting work in southern California to create a rail corridor connecting the state with Las Vegas.
